Our

commitment and dedication to providing high quality, affordable aged care makes a difference to the lives of our residents and their families.
- Graeme Prior, CEO of Hall & Prior with Kensington Park resident Martin

About Hall & Prior Health & Aged Care Group

The Hall & Prior story began in 1992, founded by Michael Hall and Graeme Prior, and has been shaped by a passion for providing quality care to older people from all walks of life.

Since then, our organisation has continued to expand in response to the diverse and growing needs of the ageing Australian population. We are now one of the largest aged care providers in Western Australia and New South Wales, with 2,400 staff, 32 homes and more in the pipeline.

We are an approved aged care provider and registered for NDIS with each of our homes providing safety and comfort, offering choices in accommodation (including companion rooms for couples) and health services that we know are important to our residents.

Our philosophy is that our residents are entitled to the highest standards of professional choice, world-class care, privacy and dignity, no matter what their background. Our aged care properties embody these qualities,

providing a comfortable home for all of our residents, whatever the level of care they require.

Food and nutrition are a major focus, with a team of aged care specialist chefs and dietitians, ensuring residents are provided with meals that are not only full of flavour, but meet the dietary needs of residents as they age.

Our homes are suitable for residents with high care needs and we also offer palliative care, respite care, dementia support, interim care, in-home community care and extra services.

We regard each of our residents as an individual, deserving of respect and the opportunity to participate in decision-making on issues that affect them. Above all, we make it our business that our homes are their home.

5

Leading with integrity

Our vision is to be a leader in the provision of aged care services in Australia. This is a consistent and unwavering mission that has carried the Hall & Prior Group through 30 years of successful and sustained operations.

Maintaining this vision requires a sustained effort and commitment to grow, to improve and evolve our services for the benefit of our residents, clients and the wider community.

Homes designed for life

Our homes are designed to make the most of every moment. Meaningful activity is a large focus of life in all our homes, and lifestyle staff run a varied program of activities designed to engage, entertain and enrich the lives of residents.

There are also frequent community visitors and entertainers who visit our homes, creating memories for those who call our homes their own.

How we care for each and every one

Hall & Prior’s goal is to ensure respectful, inclusive and culturally safe aged care services that are accessible to all consumers and their nominated representatives, regardless of their background or life experiences. All staff have a role to play in meeting this goal. Whether barriers to appropriate aged care are perceived or real, they must be addressed to meet the diverse needs of the community. Hall & Prior is committed to an inclusive service that is sensitive to the individual needs and preferences of all our residents.

The future of aged care is in our hands

We are committed to developing new infrastructure and expanding our services, moving towards becoming an ‘aged care solutions provider’, rather than a ‘nursing home operator’.

We are dedicated to becoming an Australian aged care provider and employer of choice, and are constantly working to improve the care outcomes for our residents. We are bringing new aged care homes online each year - and redefining the way your loved ones are cared for.

Moving into Aged Care

It’s a big step but we’re with you all the way.

Choosing an aged care home is an important decision and we are so glad that you’re considering Hall & Prior’s aged care homes during this period of your life.

Living or staying in an aged care home is all about making sure you receive the care you need. Aged care homes can help you with:

• day-to-day tasks (such as cleaning, cooking and laundry)

• personal care (such as bathing, dressing, grooming, going to the toilet)

• clinical care (such as wound care and medication administration) under the supervision of a Registered Nurse

• other care services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and dietetics.

Residential care in an aged care home can be provided on a permanent or short-term basis. Short-term care in an aged care home is called residential respite care.

We also offer home-based care through our sister company, White Oak Home Care Services (visit whiteoak.com.au for more information). Our home in Albany - Clarence Estate - also offers community care and palliative care.

Are you eligible?

If you are an older person who can no longer live independently at home, or a younger person with a disability, dementia or other special care needs that are not met through another specialist service, you may be eligible for an aged care home.

Some providers are able to offer extras on top of services like accommodation, personal care assistance and services you might need. You should discuss your needs with the Director of Nursing of the aged care home you choose who will be happy to talk you through options.

Did you know if you are under 65 you might like to explore NDIS eligibility prior to considering aged care.

8 HALL & PRIOR HEALTH & AGED CARE GROUP

What should I do if I’m eligible?

In the first instance call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 - the staff will ask you questions about your current needs and circumstances so they can arrange an assessment.

If your care needs show that you might be eligible for care in an aged care home, you will be referred for a free assessment with a member of your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). Your local ACAT member (usually a nurse, social worker or other health care professional) will arrange a time to come to your home and talk to you about your current situation and assess you for government funded aged care services.

If you are assessed as eligible for entry into an aged care home, you will receive an approval letter and support plan from your ACAT that sets out the care you are approved to receive. The support plan will include a unique referral code that you give to your chosen provider if and when you choose to go into an aged care home. Decisions about entering an aged care home must be made with your agreement.

After you have had an assessment and received a letter to say that you are approved for entry into an aged care home, follow the pathway to enter an aged care home and manage your services:

1. Work out the costs

2. Find an aged care home

3. Apply to an aged care home and accept an offer

4. Enter into agreements with your aged care home

5. Manage your care and services.

Take a tour

We strongly advise you to take a tour of your preferred aged care homes - they all have different characters and atmospheres. It’ll give you the perfect opportunity to ask questions about the type of care offered, the accommodation and other rooms in the home as well as gardens and activities you might like to try.

We know you’ll love the way Hall & Prior operate all their homes - which one is right for you?

For more information about this process, visit myagedcare.gov.au or speak to one of our friendly Directors of Nursing who will be more than happy to assist you.

Make yourself at home

You can be assured that you or your loved one will be well-looked after by our compassionate and dedicated care teams, with the added peace of mind of 24-hour care by Registered Nurses.

Cultural celebrations, art and craft activities, bus trips, music, exercise and entertainment make up much of our homes’ activity calendars, but what you participate in is up to you. There is also plenty of time for you to relax in your room or in a comfortable chair in one of our living areas.

Meet the residents

Sheila and Doug (Henry) Wickham, Concorde Aged Care Home in South Perth, WA.

Sheila (85) married Doug (89) when she was 21 years old and the pair have now been married for 64 years. They met in London where Doug, originally from Scotland, was just starting his career as a young policeman.

“We met at a dance which was held at the police hostel where Doug was living,” the pair recall.

On her wedding day, Sheila wore a dress made by one of her mother’s friends, based on a design she had seen worn by a film star at the time. She had a bouquet made of pink roses and with their combined families from Scotland and Yorkshire, it was a big wedding held in a church.

They had two sons - Neil and Ron - and then two grandchildren, Megan and Charlie. They’re both self-described ‘homebodies’ and it’s something they continue to enjoy now at Concorde.

“We enjoy it because there is no pressure - I like having everything done for me, my cups of tea and biscuits brought to me,” says Sheila.

“After being so busy before when we lived in our own home, it’s lovely to relax together. We’re very happy living here.”

Meet the staff

Jenny Cooper has been working in the aged care industry since she was 15 years old and qualified as a Registered Nurse in England in 2006.

“My Mum and grandmother were both nurses and their love of the profession obviously rubbed off on me,” she says.

After moving to Australia in 2012, she joined Hall & Prior in May 2018 at Clarence Estate in Albany, WA and eventually became Executive Manager a few years later. It’s a role which she particularly enjoys in terms of the interactions she has with residents, their families and staff on a daily basis.

“We are very blessed at Clarence to have the most amazing team, and their dedication and care shows me each day why I continue to work in this industry,” she says.

“The aged care industry is a challenging environment to work in, as is any environment that involves

people, as everyone’s needs and expectations are varied.”

For those contemplating a career in aged care, Jenny has some advice to offer.

“You have to be a certain type of person to be successful in a career in aged care,” she says.

“The perception of aged care nursing is often far from the reality. It is a very rewarding career choice, and I would encourage anyone with the desire to enter the industry to do so.”

Hall & Prior offer excellent career opportunities for aged care professionals, just like Jennyand invest significant resources in training the next generation of leaders who will follow her into rich, rewarding roles at their homes in WA and NSW. Contact careers@hallprior.com.au

It’s all about the care we give

At all our homes - in Western Australia and New South Wales - we are privileged to be entrusted with providing whole-of-person health and care for older people living with a wide range of often complex health issues.

We strive daily to provide care that enables our residents to live their life to the maximum extent feasible and to exercise choice and decision-making.

The whole-of-person health care program aims to attend to each of our resident’s unique physical, mental, social, cultural, spiritual and environmental needs.

Emerging research into the wellbeing of older Australians shows that loneliness is a critical issue in later life, including for people living in residential aged care. We know that lonely older people are more likely to experience depression, physical and cognitive decline, and a range of illnesses that require long-term care.

In many homes, we continue to provide companion rooms, fostering social interaction between our residents and their families and friends. For many, sharing a companion room gives a real boost to their final years, with the chance to socialise a benefit for many in their later years.

26 HALL & PRIOR HEALTH & AGED CARE GROUP

Nursing care

Our homes follow a Registered Nurse-led model of care. Our qualified, caring nursing staff provide the highest levels of care, and will tailor a series of care plans to meet your particular needs and preferences. Every aspect of your care is designed in consultation with you and your family.

We have a Registered Nurse on duty, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

We encourage your family to discuss your care needs and expectations as you decide whether to move into one of our homes.

Our staff are key to our success

Our strength is our people. They make a real difference in the lives of our residents, and are committed to working together to deliver the highest standard of care. Our experienced care teams provide daily assistance and support for all our residents, ensuring their health and wellbeing, and encouraging them to maintain the highest level of independence possible.

Throughout our homes, residents have multidisciplinary care teams working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We employ enrolled nurses, personal carers, allied health professionals, therapy assistants and hospitality staff, and there is a Registered Nurse on site at all times.

We have also developed strong relationships with local universities and training colleges to assist in providing students with a practical environment where they can learn about aged care.

Investing in the future

Our investment in people includes attracting and developing our staff, and developing the systems and structures required to manage and grow as a world-class aged care provider.

Hall & Prior has led the industry in establishing the role of the Nurse Practitioner in aged care, and has participated in various research projects, the results of which have become used throughout the industry.

Hall & Prior are a founding member and financial sponsor of the Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care in Western Australia.

Phil is known for his fitness levels and the incredibly high number of push-ups he can perform.

“He works out every day with a set of dumbbells, and recently received a boxing stand and swivel push-up grips to train with at the home,” says Alyse, Lifestyle Officer at Sirius Cove.

“He’s always looking out for his fellow residents and has a very caring nature about him.”
