HALLIE POPE

TOPIC EXPLANATION An exploration into our senses; we use them all the time, everyday, but do we understand how they work? And what does it mean for us when some of our senses are lost? We aim to reconsider how our senses connect and how technological innovations have transformed their connections and functions.

CONSIDERED TOPICS Language, Biomimicry, Maps, Geology, Dark Matter

KEY PHRASES - Sound, taste, smell, sight, hearing - Vibrations, frequencies, wavelengths, molecules - Knowledge, science, research, experiments, technology - Experience, design, color - Reality, consciousness, bias - Receptors, chemicals, sensors - Visible, ultraviolet light - People, humanity, brain, muscles - Evolution, communication, voice, identity - Useful, change, improvement

COMMON THREAD A common theme is that our senses may seem quite separate and simple, but there is great depth in how all of them function. This depth is what allows our senses to overlap, with people being able to use sound or touch in order to see, despite possibly having sight deficiencies.

VISC 302

QUESTIONS TO ASK - How do our senses work and function in tandem with technology? - Why is visualization able to be replicated by other senses, but other senses cannot be replicated? - Is there a way for someone to train their taste senses to be stronger? - If vibrations can guide someone through the world, would there be ways to use them to replicate other senses, too? - Do our senses actually improve when we lose others? Is there any way that technology could be used to replicate taste or smell?

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER - What purpose would an additional sense serve humanity? - How does hearing color impact someone’s life? - How can someone incorporate multiple senses into design effectively - What purpose does the human brain disliking its own voice serve?

HALLIE POPE

OVERARCHING IDEAS - Evolution/improvement - Technology meshing with humanity - Human body parts as a form of internal technology - How senses affect our identity - Senses communicate with us on a surface and internal level

WHO? Why do people go to conferences? People go to conferences to learn more about topics that interest them or they may not know much about it, but want to expand their knowledge of. They would also want to have a safe and comfortable time when they are there.

What will they expect to get out of your conference?

People would expect to get more knowledge of their senses and innovations related to them out of my conference, along with the possibility for new or interesting sensory experiences, as well.

What are some ways you can meet those expectations?

The expectation for greater knowledge can be achieved through my speakers, but the new sensory experiences would come from possible museum exhibits or booths like having a VR area or a room with boxes containing different scents.

Who will attend your conference?

My intended audience is middle-aged people who have a basic understanding of their senses, but are open to learning and experiencing more about them.

How will people find out about your conference?

People could find out about my conference through local advertisements or digital advertisements on social media, like Facebook.

WHERE? - New York, Near American Museum (has a nice sense experience exhibit right now)

- London, Near University of London (neuroscience studies happening there)

- Midwest Conference Center, outside Chicago (people in the Midwest are always looking for exciting things to do, plus this would be a great area for reaching out to my desired audience)

UNCOMMON SENSE Unraveling what we do (and don’t) know about our senses Sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing: all abilities that we use everyday, yet how well do we understand them? As new innovations arise everyday, understanding how they affect us becomes more and more important. It’s time we dive deeper into our own bodies, and know ourselves inside and out.

WE’RE ONLY TEMPORARY Expanding the abilities of the human body Being fully abled is a privilege, but it doesn’t always last forever. At some point in our lives, about 1 in 4 of us will have some type of disability. Those disabilities might not have to be forever, as new solutions are arriving to us everyday, bringing our senses back in new ways. Come find out about the technologies that might one day benefit you.

Dark - Tacky - Playful

MAKING SENSE Developing the power of our senses We ask the people around us to make sense, but what if they actually could? In fact, they already are. Our senses are growing and expanding everyday, and we aim to make sense of the process of making senses.

Technological - West Coast - Inventive
