Principal’s Report

A FUNDAMENTAL RETHINK OF THE WAY THAT MANY HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS OPERATE IS OCCURRING AT THE MOMENT. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ARE THE KEY DRIVERS OF THE CHANGE, BUT OTHER FORCES ARE ALSO CONTRIBUTING. A RECENT ERNST AND YOUNG REPORT ‘UNIVERSITY OF THE FUTURE’ NOTED DEMOCRATISATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND ACCESS (AVAILABILITY OF KNOWLEDGE), CONTESTABILITY OF MARKETS AND FUNDING, AND THE GLOBAL MOBILITY OF STUDENTS (AND INSTITUTIONS) ARE INVOLVED.

D

igital technologies have been a part of education for a long time but it is only in the last five years that online learning has become a truly disruptive influence and a driver of real change. The model of learning when my generation was at university was a large lecture, a smaller tutorial and then all research was completed in the library. Assignments were then handwritten and placed in a box outside the tutor’s office. Today’s university students are just as likely to not attend a lecture but view the material outline, attend a tutorial (or hands-on practical session) and complete most research via the internet. Assignments are sent in via email or in a number of disciplines completed in quite different formats.

“ The need for a strong core set of skills in literacy and numeracy has not changed and will not change.”

The development of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCS) provided by some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, free and accessible anywhere in the world, is another early example of the way access to knowledge and information (but not yet certification) is going. There is a significant question of how much these changes will impact the social engagement aspect of university life.

On average, 95% of Haileybury graduates will head straight into tertiary study. Haileybury’s programs and teaching practice need to continue to evolve to have students ready. The need for a strong core set of skills in literacy and numeracy has not changed and will not change. The Haileybury explicit teaching model driven by Deputy Principal, John Fleming, across the Junior School is increasing in importance as changes occur further up the schooling process. This has been highlighted in a series of articles in The Australian newspaper (see page 5). Haileybury’s literacy and numeracy results, as measured by national testing, are exceptional.

The focus in the middle years is on continuing to build the core skills and the development of strong analytical thinking. In 2012, Haileybury teachers were using the Understanding By Design thinking framework to develop units of work for introduction this year. The introduction of iPads from Years 5 to 12 in 2013 follows the success of a Year 9 and Berwick Campus trial in 2012. Accessibility of information, capacity for enhanced research, engagement in classes and the ability to present work in different ways are all factors in the roll-out of iPads. The use of iPads will be enhanced by an improved online learning system, go2, which will replace Haileybury Online. The changes at Haileybury occur within an education system that is changing much more slowly. Students, at least for the medium term, will still be completing

handwritten, high stakes exams at the end of Year 12. The universities may well look for other ways to sort out prospective students but the Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) derived from the Year 12 exams is likely to remain the most efficient and cost effective way for universities to sort out their intake. Extensive trials must be conducted, and a range of equity issues resolved, before Year 12 exams shift to computers. This is still some time off. A strong set of core literacy and numeracy skills, the development of analytical and creative thinking, access to knowledge and flexibility of presentation through technology, and sound preparation for end-of-schooling examinations are the fundamentals of preparing students for further study when they leave school.

Attracting the Best Teachers

“ Teacher quality is the single most important factor in student attainment. Haileybury has an absolute focus on improving teaching performance as a part of building a strong professional learning culture.”

BY DEREK SCOTT & CRAIG GLASS HAILEYBURY HAS LONG PRIDED ITSELF ON THE HIGH CALIBRE OF TEACHERS IT ATTRACTS TO THE SCHOOL. IT IS NO FLUKE THAT QUALITY TEACHERS CONTINUE TO APPLY TO WORK AT HAILEYBURY: IT IS THE HARD WORK THAT GOES INTO NOT ONLY RECRUITING THE RIGHT TEACHERS BUT RETAINING THEM AS WELL.

T

he rule is simple: in order to be the best, you must attract the best. Extensive research over the past 30 years has highlighted that, aside from socioeconomic factors, teacher quality is the single most important factor in student attainment. Haileybury has an absolute focus on improving teaching performance as a part of building a strong professional learning culture. The program in place includes: A rigorous performance appraisal program Peer coaching ✣ Peer classroom observation ✣ Profession learning experiences ✣ A commitment to lifelong learning. ✣ ✣

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL All teaching staff receive an annual performance appraisal. With student diagnostic and performance testing occurring at all levels, teaching staff have an extensive range of data for analysis of the effectiveness of their classroom performance. Each teacher also participates in a classroom observation program that involves an announced and

The Haileyburian SUMMER 2013

unannounced visit from which they receive assessment and feedback on their teaching practice.

PEER COACHING Haileybury has a set of trained coaches who use the GROW coaching model to help their colleagues reflect upon and enhance their practice within the classroom. Staff participation within this program is completely voluntary and in two years, 25% of Haileybury teachers have voluntarily engaged in coaching. The information that is shared between coach and the person who is coached is completely confidential and the focus can be on any aspect of the teaching process that the participant wishes. This is seen as a noninvasive alternative to the formal professional recognition process that staff can use to enhance their professional practice.

PEER CLASSROOM OBSERVATION Research from around the world has suggested that an important tool in developing teachers’ professional knowledge and practice is the ability to observe their peers teaching. This is something that very rarely happens once teachers graduate from their university training course. Haileybury has done this informally throughout our Junior School for a number of years, however, we have instituted this as a formal process for all teaching staff from 2012. Early indications show this process is something that both observers and even those being observed

enjoy. Teachers are learning from one another and, perhaps more importantly, are having more meaningful conversations about what and how they teach. We have given specific instructions within this process for people to focus on elements of the teaching process rather than the curriculum being taught. In essence we want to move teachers away from conversations about what is being taught, towards conversations about how it is being taught.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES Professional development occurs both inside and outside of the School. Inside the School, it can take many forms. It is not unusual for staff to come together to hear a keynote speaker or for them to work in teams on curriculum projects. At a recent curriculum day, Haileybury staff listened to speakers on the innovative Understanding by Design program, and then broke into small groups to write units of work based on this. Professional development outside of the School can also take many forms. For most subject areas there are strong subject associations that provide professional development. Haileybury teachers are regular presenters for these associations and when not presenting they are attending as learners. Earlier this year one of our teachers presented at the Australian Council of Educational

It appears everyone is talking about the Haileybury Model of Education.

Leaders Conference. The presentation outlined the successful introduction of Haileybury’s teacher coaching program, as it is an exemplary model for coaching in schools. On occasion, Haileybury is able to send its teachers to overseas conferences. In recent times teachers have attended curriculum and leadership conferences. A particularly exciting opportunity was for our Senior School’s leadership team to attend leadership training at Harvard University. They returned with many ideas that will be trialled and possibly implemented at Haileybury.

A COMMITMENT TO LIFELONG LEARNING Haileybury supports staff with further study and there are currently 60 teachers completing Masters level programs via research in a partnership with Monash University. The program aims to lift the percentage of

Haileybury teaching staff with Masters level degree to 30%. Much of the research completed by Haileybury staff members is done within the School, as both staff and educational leaders are encouraged to propose and then research areas of education that they feel will enhance the Haileybury program. In these times of change, Haileybury believes it is important for our teachers to regularly update their skills so as to deliver the best possible teaching for our students.

IN MID-DECEMBER ARTICLES ABOUT HAILEYBURY’S EXPLICIT TEACHING MODEL DRIVEN BY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL, JOHN FLEMING APPEARED IN THE AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER. THESE ARTICLES AGAIN PROVED THAT HAILEYBURY IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE EDUCATION FIELD IN AUSTRALIA. Haileybury’s Deputy Principal John Fleming spends four weeks of each term travelling Australia, coaching teachers in using strategies to improve students’ skills. Under the banner of The Haileybury Institute, John Fleming has helped more than 100 schools from all corners of the country and the results have been outstanding. “The first thing I say to schools is we’re aiming to be among the best schools in Australia, we’re not aiming for national minimum benchmarks,” “We remove all the excuses. Many schools will tell you: ‘But we have indigenous kids, or we have transient kids, or disadvantaged kids’. You quickly get rid of that.” John Fleming stated. The program is delivered to hundreds of schools across Australia. “We felt we had something that was best practice in education and there was an opportunity to share it with schools around Australia” stated Principal, Derek Scott. Prominent Social Commentator and Indigenous Leader, Noel Pearson noted in his article in The Australian that Fleming supports school reform across the nation through The Haileybury Institute. This program closely fits with Haileybury’s extensive Social Justice Program. Many of the schools who participate in John’s program are assisted on a pro-bono basis, with education departments helping to cover the costs. THE AUSTRALIAN WEDNESDAY, 12 DECEMBER 2012

2012 Social Justice Report “ We all benefit from living in a just society with a commitment to the law and to human rights, where each individual is valued as an equal member of that society.” DEREK SCOTT PRINCIPAL

S

ocial Justice is a crucial platform of the Haileybury experience. We believe that this platform creates awareness of the importance of community as well as developing a strong sense of self-worth in young people. A large part of the Haileybury experience extends beyond the classroom. From ELC to VCE, Haileybury students participate in the School’s Social Justice Program to enhance their awareness of the wider community. Students have embraced the program by getting involved in many different experiences. In 2012 the School collectively raised in excess of $50,000 for a number of notable causes. The success of the Haileybury Social Justice Program extends beyond the extraordinary monetary value raised. Life skills are gained as students are challenged to step out of their comfort zones and think about those who are less fortunate.

NEWLANDS STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE RELAY FOR LIFE

Each age group has a different strategy and aim for the program. In the Early Learning Centres and the Junior School, awareness is gained via initiatives that students can relate to. Middle, Pre-Senior and Senior School students use a hands-on approach to gain awareness and raise money.

Each campus supports a range of fundraising initiatives for charities. Over 50 charities both local and international will benefit from the Haileybury program this year.

JUNIOR SCHOOL students understood the significance of the cause by giving physical food items and toys to various charities, which included Wesley Mission and Operation Christmas Child. MIDDLE SCHOOL students participated

in many different social justice initiatives, including a Coin Trail and Relay for Life to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and Cancer Research. PRE-SENIOR students were involved in YGAP

The Aikman boys always enjoy their visit to the Frankston Hospital and fully appreciate that they have brighten the day of a sick child.

Bradshaw’s contribution to Montclair House is wideranging. Not only do the boys raise money for the respite home through their annual

Whilst the money raised contributes greatly to the functioning of the home, enabling them to provide the children with new appliances and maintain the premises, it is the visits to the children which are most appreciated. go2 HAILEYBURY HAS RAPIDLY BECOME A LEADER IN THE INNOVATIVE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM AND 2013 WILL SEE A NUMBER OF NEW INITIATIVES IN THIS AREA. Alongside the iPad Program, which is being implemented for all students in Years 5 to 12, the School is introducing a new online learning platform called go2. go2 is replacing Haileybury Online, which has been in use for over a decade, and from January it will bring students, parents and teachers together like never before. It will make it simple for staff to deliver engaging teaching and learning materials to students and will become the central ‘go2 place’ for delivering news and information to the Haileybury community. The site has been redesigned to take advantage of modern web technologies and is more visually appealing, which will make it quicker and easier to locate up-to-date information. go2 will also expand beyond being just a website to encompass a number of technology strategies throughout the School. It will include the delivery of mobile applications, professional development and a new way of providing support to staff and students through the use of ‘go2 bars’. These walk-up counters will be available in our main libraries and will provide an easy way to learn more about the use of technology. For instance, students could enquire about how to use a particular app on their iPad. It is a very exciting time ahead as we look forward to building on these strategies in 2013 and beyond.

CASTLEFIELD

Senior School will kick off the year by presenting Dusty – The Original Pop Diva. It tells the fascinating story of Dusty Springfield’s life and times. There is a selection of more than 30 hit songs, ranging from the 50s to the 80s, woven throughout the plot. This is a wonderful show because you go into the theatre whistling the tunes. There is also a Haileybury connection with our own Dennis Smith (OH ‘60), Executive Director OHA in the 2000s, producing the original production.

NEWLANDS Newlands is tackling Disney’s High School Musical Jnr, one of the most successful shows in schools ever. It has many memorable songs such as Get’cha Head in the Game, Stick to the Status Quo and We’re All In This Together. It is sure to be a popular choice with the students.

This annual concert was held in the David Bradshaw Chapel on a glorious Sunday in September. The audience was treated to a variety of Chamber Music. Larger groups performing included the String Orchestra, Brass Ensemble and Haileybury Singers. Some VCE students presented rarely heard works such as Quiet City (Copland) featuring trumpet, clarinet and strings. Class of 2012 students Thomas Pepprell and Lauren Coleman and current Year 12 student Ying Gan showcased their talents during solo performances.

EDRINGTON Edrington has chosen Pirates of Penzance Jnr. This beloved Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera has been adapted, with great success, for younger budding actors, singers and dancers. This romantic story of young lovers, duty, swashbuckling pirates, eccentric majorgenerals and most intriguing paradoxes is bound to wow audiences in the hands of our wonderful youth performers.

Mark Dreyfus Seniors Morning Tea For the third year in a row Haileybury students performed for local senior citizens at a morning tea, hosted by MHR Mark Dreyfus.

The Haileyburian SUMMER 2013

It was another busy end to the year for the Unit 4 Drama and Theatre Studies students with their final performance examinations. The character transformations were truly magnificent with the results to prove it.

Following some impressive bag-piping by Lincoln Hilton to welcome the guests, the concert began. Olivia Rewell accompanied by Mr Jarrah Whyte sang The Man With the Child in His Eyes, and Lucy Massouras accompanied by Mr Sergio Ercole sang Desafinado. The Senior Guitar Ensemble, consisting of William Armstrong, Manoj Arachchige, Jeffrey Avergun, Roger Wu and Andrew Chang, followed with Malaguena, and Anthony Chi and Lachlan Daff concluded with a saxophone duet.

Spring Concert Following a busy few days of graduations the massed forces of all Middle School musicians presented a combined concert in Aikman Hall. The stage setting was huge to accommodate the numbers of students. Each item was presented by the Middle School Music Captains (Castlefield: Leila Derek and Jack Hewitt; Edrington: Lily Rolfe and Finnlay Dall; Newlands: Carina Starvaggi and Prince Jayasundera). Over $600 was raised to support music education at the Dili International School.

Haileybury Sport Aerobics

Kristy Kendall, was also awarded Australian Coach of the Year.

AEROBICS ENJOYED ANOTHER HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SEASON IN 2012, WITH OVER 130 ATHLETES COMPETING FOR HAILEYBURY IN THE SCHOOLAEROBICS COMPETITION FROM YEARS 5 THROUGH TO OLD HAILEYBURIANS. This year the National Schoolaerobics Championships took place in Sydney. It was the most successful year in the competition to date, with Haileybury winning Nation titles in Secondary Open A, Secondary Open B, Secondary All Boys, Secondary Stage 1, and Kenji Fujihara winning the Senior Male Singles division. No school or club has ever won so many national titles in a single year. Haileybury’s Head of Aerobics,

Some of our athletes went on to represent their country in the World Aerobics Championships held in the Netherlands in October. Of particular note were 2012 Aerobics Captains, Rachel Capp and Kenji Fujihara, who finished fourth in the Senior Pairs Division, and Lauren Smith and Yoshi Fujihara who finished third in the Junior Pairs Division. Kenji also finished second in the Senior Male Individual Section and Asuka Fujihara become Cadet World Champion. With such success in 2012, we all wait with anticipation for the 2013 season.

World Aerobics Champion! CONGRATULATIONS TO ASUKA FUJIHARA WHO IS THE REIGNING FISAF CADET MALE WORLD CHAMPION. Asuka performed superbly in the Netherlands in front of a large crowd. He wowed the judges with his shear strength and powerful jumps to finish ahead of competitors from around the world. It has been a great year for Asuka, taking out the State Championship in Adelaide and finishing second at the National Championships in Sydney, in order to gain his position on the Australian Team. In the lead up to the World Championships, Asuka trained five days a week with his coach Tracey Vaughan and the Haileybury Team.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS – SENIOR OPEN B TEAM

Asuka is following in the footsteps of his brother Kenji, who also won the title back in 2008.

Rugby Young Achiever The victory in the SubJunior Srixon International earned him entry into the Thailand World Junior Championships, held at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Club in Thailand in November. Ryan shot rounds of 73-65-7470 and finished at 6 under par, but a bogey on the last hole meant he tied for the lead and found himself in a sudden death playoff.

World Junior Golf Champion RYAN RUFFELS IS A YOUNG MAN WITH A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE IN GOLF.

R

yan, a Year 10 student from Castlefield, has an impressive list of golfing accomplishments for someone so young. He travelled to the US in July and finished in the top 10 in every tournament he entered, including second in the San Diego Junior World Championships. In September, Ryan competed in the SubJunior Srixon International at the Kurri Kurri Golf Club in NSW. He shot rounds of 71-65-6967 to finish at 16 under, and won the Under 15 Division by 14 shots.

Ryan and his Thai opponent went stroke for stroke, each making par on the first five holes, before Ryan made a birdie at the 6th hole to win the Championship. Ryan described the tense playoff, watched by over a crowd of 1,000, as “so much fun”. Ryan has recently been selected in the Australian National Junior Squad for golfers aged between 13-17 years. This is a wonderful achievement, particularly considering he will easily be the youngest member of the team.

Girls Tennis The 1st Girls Tennis Team’s young stars, Gabi Ruffles and Kate Vaughan, have had a busy summer. Gabi, a Year 8 student at Castlefield, headed to Miami last December to play in the Orange Bowl. She was invited on this trip following her successful tour of Italy in July 2012, where she represented Australia in three tournaments. Gabi’s highlights from 2012 include winning the Sydney Hard Court Nationals in both the singles & doubles for 12-years-old and younger. Kate Vaughan, a Year 8 student at Newlands, also had a successful 2012 winning the Victorian Clay Courts championships in both the singles and doubles. Kate spent her summer refining her tennis game on the country circuit and she is particularly looking forward to the Mildura tournament in early 2013.

The students on the field were supported by Derek Scott, Pam Chamberlain, John Twist and Craig Glass, along with several of the recently announced 2013 Year 12 leaders, numerous members of staff and the athletics coaching staff lead by Chair of Athletics, Mark Reed and Head of Boys Athletics, Russell Davidson. The atmosphere throughout the entire day was electric and something every student should experience during their time at the School.

The Haileybury Girls 1st Badminton Team welcomed their new coach fresh from her Olympic debut in London. Victoria Na has returned to Haileybury as a specialist coach after graduating in 2008. She captained the Haileybury girls to premierships in 2007 and 2008, and led a run of four premierships in girls badminton. This year Victoria was thrilled to be named in the Olympic team to represent Australia in London and won her opening round match. Her aim in London was to gain experience on the international stage and tasting victory was an unexpected highlight. The 1st Girls Squad is enjoying Victoria’s insight and they are looking forward to a successful 2013 season.

Rugby Premiers

Girls Rowing

Haileybury’s 1st XV Rugby side has again taken out the VSRU Division 2 Rugby Grand Final.

Breanna Briede has been named the new Head of Girls Rowing after a career that started when she rowed for Wesley from Years 9 to 12, representing her school in the 1st boat at the APS regatta in her final two years. After graduating from Wesley, Breanna continued her rowing with the Mercantile Club for six months before taking a rowing scholarship at Duke University in North Carolina. From August 2008 until May this year, Breanna refined her rowing technique while competing in the ACC conference and regattas including the ACC Championship Regatta. At the conclusion of her time at Duke, her crew was ranked 24th in the USA and was given the honour of having a boat named after them. Breanna is currently recuperating from shoulder surgery and is looking forward to her new role mentoring the girls coaches and crews.

This rounds out a fantastic season for the boys, beating St Patricks 32-17 in the final. The team as a whole dominated the breakdowns, the scrums, line-outs and set plays in one of the hardest games of the season. The team functioned like clockwork on the day, executing their game plan to perfection. The Bloods fought hard all season winning seven of their nine games against some tough opposition.

Triathlon

KATE IN ACTION AT TRAINING

Victoria Na – Badminton

Year 12 student, Jared Klein and Jamie Meyer (OH 2009) have recently returned from the World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. Jared and Jamie had to qualify for the event by participating in three qualifying races. The triathlon was an Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km ride, 10km run). Both boys competed outstandingly well against a tough field of athletes from all over the world. This year, Jared will take on the role of Captain of Haileybury Boys Triathlon and Jamie will return to the School as the specialist coach, heavily involved in the development of the triathlon squad.

Breanna was introduced to the rowing community at a parent information evening where the girls’ Captain of Boats, Zoe Reed, was also announced. Year 12 student, Zoe, debuted in the 1st crew last year and is the only member of the 2012 1st crew who will return to the water. She will be ably assisted by Zoe Preston as Vice-Captain of Girls Boats in her third year of rowing.

Captains Corner Raja Nourredine CAPTAIN OF HAILEYBURY COLLEGE

H

aileybury, we’re often reminded, is one of the largest schools in the country. Over three thousand students call one of Haileybury’s three campuses home, and that’s not even including a considerable number of students who study at one of Haileybury’s sister schools elsewhere in the world. However, having attended Haileybury for 12 years, I truly believe that I attend not just a big school, but a great school. Over the course of 120 years, Haileybury has transformed itself from a relatively unknown school of just 17 students in Brighton, to one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the nation. This transformation did not come from nowhere. Instead, it was the result of a dedication to hard-work, excellence, and

“ ...I urge all Haileyburians...to reflect upon the problems that face the world, and the ways in which we can help to create a brighter future for all.” involvement, which has spanned the whole of Haileybury’s history. It is therefore not just a pleasure but a true honour to have been elected the Captain of Haileybury College for 2013. As School Captain, I look forward

Chiara Dogliotti CAPTAIN OF HAILEYBURY GIRLS COLLEGE

I

feel very honoured to have the privilege to lead such a wonderful and talented group of young women in 2013. I know that if all students continue to exhibit the diligence and enthusiasm they have embodied throughout 2012, this year will no doubt be one of immense success, both for the Haileybury community and the individuals themselves. On November 11, together with several other leaders, I attended the RSL State Remembrance Service at the Springvale War Cemetery. It was a special occasion that saw those who died for the freedom of our country remembered. The pride for Australia that former soldiers and relatives held was extremely encouraging and moved us all. We hope that all Haileybury students can obtain that same pride and honour within our own school community.

PAGE 16

to witnessing the continued Haileyburian enthusiasm for school life, across all year levels. A crucial part of this attitude, and one which I personally hope to play a large role in, is student involvement in Social Justice Programs, which are run in part by the Senior Leadership Team. Social Justice allows all students to give back to the wider world by helping the less fortunate, both locally, nationally, and internationally. I urge all Haileyburians to continue to contribute to Social Justice programs in 2013, but also, to reflect upon the problems that face the world, and the ways in which we, as younger people, can help to create a brighter future for all. Though we may wish to consider ourselves done at this point, we still have to consider the essential purpose of any school. Academic pursuits will still take up the majority of all Haileyburians’ time and effort. I hope that in 2013 all students, and especially Year 12s, will show the academic rigor which is characteristic of our School, and which must always precede success. It’s going to be a very busy year. But hard work is almost always rewarded, and I’m sure 2013 will be an enjoyable and memorable year for all Haileyburians.

to take a stand and truly make a difference. Although our school lives are nearing an end, it’s encouraging to know that our fundraising efforts for the OakTree Foundation will impact those less fortunate than us for many years to come. As always, the girls are ready and excited for the beginning of another summer sport season. With 1st teams already training hard, we look forward to a successful and, of course, enjoyable season of sport. We hope to see as many girls as possible at the major APS competitions, including Head of the River and the APS Swimming and Diving Championships. It was great to cheer on the 1st Athletics Squad competing at the APS Athletics Championships, after they endured a gruelling spring season of training.

“ ... if all students continue to exhibit the diligence and enthusiasm they have embodied throughout 2012, this year will no doubt be one of immense success”

I believe the greatest challenge that will accompany my role will be finding a balance between academics, school events, sport and outside-of-school commitments. I recognise that my time-management skills and ability to prioritise will be quickly refined and hopefully perfected by the end of the year.

I look forward to being heavily involved in the Social Justice aspect of our School. There is a great passion among Haileybury students, particularly for our school charity, the OakTree Foundation, which aims to fight extreme poverty while empowering young Australians

After such an action-packed 2012, I would like to congratulate the students on their persistence and hard work throughout Term 1A, and look forward to seeing them following the well-deserved summer break.

Keysborough Celebrates 50 Years ON 12 FEBRUARY 1963, HAILEYBURY KEYSBOROUGH OPENED ITS DOORS WITH 12 STAFF AND 180 YEAR 7 AND 8 BOYS IN A SINGLE EIGHT-CLASSROOM BLOCK ON A LARGE TRACT OF FORMER FARMLAND. TWO WEEKS LATER, PRIME MINISTER, ROBERT MENZIES, CONDUCTED THE OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY, AS HE HAD DONE IN 1939 WITH THE NEW BUILDINGS AT CASTLEFIELD BRIGHTON.

W

ith steadily growing enrolments during the 1950s, the Castlefield site had become overcrowded and sporting facilities were inadequate for the School to compete with the larger APS schools. The School Council decided in 1960 that developing a site in the planned growth corridor between the bayside suburbs and Dandenong would be the most prudent longterm solution. Accordingly, in August 1961, most of the current Keysborough property

was purchased and by 1969 the entire Senior School had moved to Keysborough, while Castlefield became a Junior School. Many parents were not convinced that a move so far from Brighton into what initially were vastly inferior conditions made much sense. Indeed the early years were quite harsh, but as time passed imposing buildings were added, gardens were planted and the growing trees began to soften the landscape. A second Haileybury Junior School opened

at Keysborough in 1976. The move was finally vindicated in the 1980s, which was a glorious decade of all-round achievement. The ample space available made possible the development of Haileybury Girls College in the Pargetter years. The bold decision fifty years ago to expand the School onto the Keysborough site was a key milestone in the journey towards the threecampus School, with its global connections that Haileybury is today.

The Haileyburian SUMMER 2013

W

e have achieved record numbers of members attending reunion events; incorporating events in Singapore, Adelaide and Perth this year. We have provided leadership to our clubs by supplying funds to three clubs through our grants program; two half-scholarships have been awarded to children of Old Haileyburians; and we have developed a new, clean fresh face that is unashamedly focused on recent leavers. As part of the renewal of the organisation, and our focus on connecting with recent leavers, the OHA has developed a new brand. With development overseen by former OHA councillor ANDREW BAXTER (OH ‘85), the design team from Fabric, part of the Ogilvy Group, has created a fresh, strong brand that is both professional and very ‘Haileybury’. At the core of the brand is the logo, which incorporates a stylised winged heart with the black yoke synonymous with OHA Clubs. It’s a modern interpretation of Haileybury’s most iconic symbol, linked with the clubs which are at the heart of the OHA movement. The brand is a visual representation of the changes that the Association has made over the past two years and the initial response from those current students and Old Haileyburians of all ages who have been given a sneak preview, has been extremely positive. A brand is much more than a logo, however, and you will see the changes in all communications from the OHA as the new imagery is rolled out in the coming months. You will also see many of the OHA clubs adopting the brand over the next 12 months, led by the cricket and hockey clubs during their present and coming seasons. I would like to thank all who have been involved in this process and especially Andrew and his team at Ogilvy. There is a lot to be done over the next two years and we are ready and excited to take on the challenge. Elsewhere in this magazine you will see that we have over 30 events planned for 2013. Six of these are our marquee or signature events that will be opened up to the

entire Haileybury community, allowing a huge number of people to connect with each other in person. We are particularly excited about the planned Mother’s Day Luncheon and Business Cocktail event. We will reposition our popular Football Luncheon to Friday, 21 June to coincide with the OHAFC playing at Keysborough the next afternoon against St Kevins (following the School game). Additionally, a range of services and opportunities will be available to members in 2013 including: Mentoring program for alumni members Employment directory ✣ Community service grants ✣ OHA Awards ✣ Additional Clubs ✣ ✣

One of our greatest challenges is inconnecting, communicating and engaging our young members. Our Young Leaders Advisory Group is doing an outstanding job in providing suggestions and opportunities for this group and our YOHA (Young Old Haileyburians Association) event mid-way through the year was a major success. Similarly, the work we are doing in the social media space is developing, proving to be an effective tool when communicating with this group. I would like to pay a special tribute to the outstanding work of LUKE BOULD (OH ’91) in his time as President. Luke has transformed the OHA in his three years at the helm. We now have a comprehensive strategic plan with a clear vision forward and a Council committed to providing exclusive benefits for our members. I am delighted that Luke has agreed to stay on the Senior Executive for a further period to ensure that we stay on track and deliver the strategy to our members. Luke’s successor will be announced at the commencement of the 2013 school year. We wish the entire Haileybury community a prosperous 2013 and look forward to seeing you during the course of the year. OHA Clubs Football Hockey

AFTER A MIXED SEASON OF VARYING RESULTS, the OHA Hockey Club (OHAHC) returns next season stronger and more energised, with the introduction of new players and the development of the current players. For those who do not know, OHAHC currently has two men’s teams playing in winter, as well as a very strong women’s team. We are hoping to expand these numbers in the next couple of seasons, with the push for young Haileyburians to become involved with the team as well as other players from other clubs. OHAHC is not only for players who have played for years and years. It is also for people who have just started, as well as for the school children who want an extra game on the weekend to help develop their skills. There are a number of incentives for new members with extremely competitive pricing for the season’s fees, especially for current school leavers who will receive discounted fees if they join and convince

others to join. On top of this, we have earlybird joining discounts as well as further discounts applying to current school students. If anyone is interested in playing or wants more information regarding any of these discounts or prices, please feel free to contact ASHESH JALOTA (OH 2008) via email – president@ohahc.org.au. The OHAHC not only prides itself on its success on the hockey field, but also the success off the field, with a number of social events occurring throughout the season. These include a number of pub crawls, trivia nights, fundraising events as well as other events run by the club. Please keep an eye out for these events on our website as key dates for all events will be posted there – ohahc.org.au

SOME EXCITING NEWS FOR THE OLD HAILEYBURY BOWLS CLUB: we now have a second event in the calendar, which will be a ‘friendly’ match against Haileybury First Bowls team! The event will be held on Sunday, 10 February at Bentleigh Bowls Club. Both OHA bowls and Haileybury are keen to see this become a regular event on the bowls calendar for both teams. The event provides another opportunity for Haileybury students to liaise with the OHA. The Haileyburian SUMMER 2013

Training commenced back in November. It is a young squad that demonstrated clear potential in the second half of last season by winning seven of the last nine games. With some good strategic recruiting the 2013 teams are shaping up very well. There have also been a few changes off the field with a restructure that attempts to spread the load. The committee is also very focused on making 2013 a huge year that sets the club up for many years – both on and off the field. Once again, McKinnon Reserve is our home base and the club will be participating in VAFA Premier B Division. DARREN SECCULL (OH ’84) (Seniors), Craig Brockley (Reserves) and DALE ANDERSEN (OH ’89) (U/19s) are the coaches this year, while ADAM FLOYD (OH ’94) will be coaching the 3rds.

The future of OHAHC looks extremely promising with a number of changes occurring and the further expansion of the club. If you are not a member of this fantastic club, now is the time to become active and have fun doing it. JOIN NOW!

2013 IS SHAPING UP AS AN IMPORTANT SEASON for the OHAFC Football Club. All three sides just missed out on finals action last year so they will all be looking to go a step further. Player depth has improved to the extent that the club plans on having a Premier B 3rds side compete this year. This is an exciting development for the club and reflects the advancements made over the last few years.

In addition, the annual APS Bowls event will be held at Kew Heights Bowls Club on Sunday, 24 March. Interested bowlers for either event are asked to contact MARK THOMPSON (OH ‘82) at mark.thompson15@bigpond.com

Cricket THE OLD HAILEYBURIANS CRICKET CLUB IS CONTINUING TO BUILD in Season 2012/13. We are again competing in the MCC Club XI competition in Division 2. This season the OHCC has established an ongoing Free Membership for all YOHA members, to establish a youth policy to allow the new generation of Haileybury Cricketers to continue to represent Haileybury beyond Year 12. This year we are introducing the Old Haileyburians Cricket Roger Gerny Medal, which will be awarded to a current Haileybury Student who is in the 1st XI squad. The Roger Gerny Medal will go to the Haileybury Cricketer who is the genuine best and fairest, and will not be based on bowling and batting statistics but overall performance at training, match day and post-match. This will bring the OHCC closer to the Haileybury Cricket program. 2013/14 will see the introduction of the first OHCC women’s cricket side and we are currently taking expressions of interest. Numbers for players and members is building but we are in need of new players for this season and beyond so please email: ohcc@ live.com.au or call OHCC President LEIGH BOUGHTON (OH ’2001) on 0409 916 793 for more information. equal second place Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College. ANDREW O’BRIEN (OH ’88) took out the overall Murray Buxton Perpetual Trophy on count back with a score of +4. This trophy was last won by an Old Haileyburian also in 2004 when GEOFF SINCOCK (OH ’75) prevailed.

Touch VIPERS SPORTS CLUB INC. AND OLD HAILEYBURIANS (OHA) ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE A PARTNERSHIP WHICH WILL BE MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL FOR BOTH ORGANISATION AND THEIR MEMBERS. Vipers will provide an avenue for OHA members to continue their association with Touch Football through the administration and creation of teams specifically for OHA members, called Haileybury Vipers. These teams will not be exclusive to OHA members but will be the foundation of the team, as Vipers continues to be a leader in the

development and participation of touch in Victoria. This partnership will continue to provide opportunities for all OHA members as they continue their participation with Touch Football and other sporting endeavours. For further information, please contact CON D’CRUZ (OH 2003) at Conalene45@gmail. com or 0403 567 996.

Old Skool Aerobics HAILEYBURY OLD SKOOL AEROBICS MADE IT TO THROUGH AGAIN to the National School Aerobic Championships, held in Sydney in 2012, after battling it off in the heats and states championships. The girls took out third place and were extremely proud of themselves having organised their own routine, training and costuming. It was a fantastic weekend and the girls are hoping to continue the ongoing Haileybury tradition of representing the School at the nationals in the ‘old skool’ section for the coming year. The team is very excited to jumpstart into next year and would love for anybody who is interested in joining the team to contact ROSIE HART (OH 2010) at amber-rose-hart@ hotmail.com and to come along to training.

IN 120 YEARS, OVER 10,000 STUDENTS HAVE ENJOYED A HAILEYBURY EDUCATION. MANY STUDENTS WHO WOULD NOT OTHERWISE HAVE HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY HAVE BEEN SUPPORTED BY THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

We are delighted to announce that four students have commenced at Haileybury in Term 1A on Haileybury Foundation Scholarships. Jodi Finegan and Ujjwal Chaudhry are the recipients of Savulescu/Aikman Scholarships, generously donated by the M S Newman Family Foundation MARK NEWMAN (OH ’81). Additionally, Hannah Schmitz is the recipient of a Geoffrey Patience Scholarship. After studying medicine at Melbourne University, GEOFFREY PATIENCE (OH ’60) became a rural GP in Benalla and his contribution to the community was impressive. Declan Dempsey has been awarded a Clark Club Scholarship. The Clark Club is made up of Old Haileyburians who graduated from Haileybury 50 or more years ago. Each year a new group is inducted into this club, named after long-serving member of staff, Brian Clark. In 2013, we hope to announce further scholarships donated by individual members of the Haileybury community or groups of individuals. We have been pleased with the generosity shown by members of the Class of 2012 and their families. Each family was asked to contribute a small amount towards a Class of 2012 scholarship and thus far, the response has been particularly impressive. Our Winged Heart Society continues to grow in number and is open to any member of the Haileybury community who wishes to leave a bequest to Haileybury. For further information or to make a donation, please contact RUSSELL DAVIDSON on 9213 2218. SUMMER 2013 The Haileyburian PAGE 23

OHA Scholarships

OHA Mentoring Program THE OHA MENTORING LAUNCH WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, 16 APRIL. We aim to have 100 mentors sign up to our online mentoring facility by this date. Mentors will be Old Haileyburians who feel that they can contribute to the career pathway of a fellow Old Haileyburian. Commitment and time will be determined between the two parties. Mentees are encouraged to identify the type of mentor they are after and connect with that individual via the OHA website. Both mentors and mentees are encouraged to attend the OHA Mentoring Launch for tips on successful mentoring.

For more information about the OHA Mentoring Program, please contact RUSSELL DAVIDSON on 9213 2218 or email to russell. davidson@haileybury.vic.edu.au

Clubs Grants Program THE OHA WAS DELIGHTED RECENTLY TO ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF ITS INAUGURAL CLUBS GRANTS PROGRAM.

The Old Haileyburians Association was delighted to announce the awarding of two half-scholarships recently. The recipients are sons and/or daughters of Old Haileyburians who might not otherwise be able to attend or continue to attend Haileybury. The recipients of the scholarships will commence their education at the beginning of the 2013 school year. The objective of the program is to allow children of Old Haileyburians to attend the School, when their financial position would not ordinarily enable them to.

Provide support and assistance to OHA Clubs. Strengthen OHA Clubs by encouraging activities directed towards:

– increasing both female and male membership – building stronger connections/ties to the School, OHA and other OHA Clubs – communicating club news to the broader OHA network to raise their profile. The Clubs’ funding cycle occurs bi-annually, to make it accessible to all OHA Clubs, given the seasonality of some Clubs’ activities. The closing date for our next set of applications is February 28, with funding allocations due in late April. PAGE 24
