Principal’s Introduction In 2019 Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) completed a very successful year making progress in all areas of operation. HRS takes much of its vision from Haileybury Melbourne which provides enormous support in developing the culture and learning program of the School.

Enrolments at HRS have continued to grow with the School starting the year with 562 students with 75 boarders. This was a significant increase on the previous year’s enrolment. The growth in enrolments was predominantly in the Junior School and Year 7 meaning that HRS will continue to see enrolments increase as these groups move through the School.

The three keys goals of the School are to develop academic excellence, to have a high expectation in all areas of operation and to build a strong, supportive and resilient community.

The growth in academic results was shown in the improvement in NAPLAN enrolments across all year levels. In particular, the growth in Year 3 was outstanding. This demonstrated the impact that the explicit teaching model is having in the School.

In our Aboriginal Year 7 and 8, class literacy results improved on average by two years, with some students showing three years’ growth.

HRS had a number of opportunities to come together and celebrate as a community. The goodwill and enthusiasm of our parent body for the education that is being provided is wonderful. There is no doubt the support of our parents, teachers and students is contributing significantly to the reputation and growth of the School.

All sections of the community demonstrated their support for our program in the biennial LEAD surveys that were undertaken. The levels of support of the School shown in these surveys was excellent given we are a new and emerging school.

Haileybury Rendall School is an energetic community that wants the School to be the best School in Darwin and the Northern Territory. We all understand that this will occur if we have high expectations in everything we do and are uncompromising is trying to meet these goals. The journey will be ongoing as we strive for the continual improvement in all aspects of operation.

Student Body The students at Haileybury Rendall School embrace the School’s high expectations.

The student body is made up of both day and boarding students.

Student Numbers On Census Day, 2 August 2019, Haileybury Rendall School had an enrolment of 517 students (Transition to Year 12), of whom 251 were boys and 266 were girls. This enrolment included 97 Indigenous students. Haileybury Rendall School also had Early Learning Centre enrolments of 44 for a total enrolment of 561.

Student Outcomes Academic Results 2019 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) HRS offers the VCE in Years 10, 11 and 12.

• 19 students completed the VCE in Year 12.

• 100% pass rate and all awarded the VCE. • 22% of students achieved an ATAR of 80 or above.

• 45% of students achieved an ATAR of 70 or above.

• All students seeking University placements were successful.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) HRS offers the VCAL in Years 10, 11 and 12. The students complete units in: • Literacy and Numeracy Skills • Work Related Skills • Industry Specific Skills • Personal Development Skills.

In 2019 the following was achieved: • Six students completed the VCAL in Year 12

Vocational, Education and Training (VET) units and certificates were undertaken in: • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology • Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology • Certificate I in Automotive Vocational Preparation • Introduction to Meat Processing (Retail Butcher) • Certificate I in Retail Services • Certificate II in Kitchen Operations • Barista Training • NT White Card – Prepare to Work Safety in the Construction Industry • Certificate II in Engineering Pathways • Enter and Work in Confined Spaces • Work Safety at Heights • Plumbing Pathway Program • Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management • Certificate II in Health Support Services.

NAPLAN Results In 2019, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 undertook the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy testing.

All Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students completed the NAPLAN testing with the results showing improvement on the previous year.

The strongest growth was in Year 3 where the results displayed the impact of the explicit instruction model used in our Junior School. In Years 3 and 5, 8 of the possible 10 areas displayed growth from 2018.

In Year 7 our results are heavily influenced by our Aboriginal boarders, many of whom arrive with low levels of literacy and numeracy. Once these students are removed from the data, the growth in results is strong. Importantly, our Aboriginal boarder’s growth in literacy and numeracy has been very strong, but NAPLAN is not an effective tool to show this.

Strategies for the Improvement of NAPLAN Results: • Ensure all Years 7, 8 and 9 Aboriginal Education classes in literacy and numeracy are taught by primary educators.

• Continue the fine tuning of the explicit model of teaching in the Junior School and Aboriginal Education program.

This is showing significant benefits in all areas of delivery.

• Continue to seek and gain support from Haileybury Melbourne in developing teacher strategies to maximise the students’ learning.

• Ensure the teachers in all year levels are delivering a high quality program that focuses on the core skills in literacy and numeracy.
