Spring 2018

FOUNDATION FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Spring 2018 edition of Foundation News, the quarterly bulletin to telegraph our stories and successes to the growing Haileybury community. This year has been one of continued, steady progress towards achieving the Foundation’s key objectives. Our Board meets four times a year and we focus on four core segments, which I would like to briefly share with you: • Community Awareness: we measure ourselves on how well and how much we communicate with Haileybury stakeholders and I am pleased to report that our message has been heard at 20 OHA, School and community events already this year, more than double our recent whole-of-year averages

• Donation/Donor Growth: in particular, our goal is to build regular annual donations significantly and to continue to build on the $5 million in bequests through our Winged Heart Society • Growing our Investment Corpus: the prudent stewardship of funds received is a critical component of the Foundation’s longterm success and I am pleased to report that its investment portfolio has returned over 8% net per annum since its inception and is nearing $4 million in value • Allocating our Resources: on top of Foundation Scholarships allocated through our Scholarship Fund, a highlight earlier this year was the allocation of part of our Building Fund towards specific infrastructure at each School campus, thanks to the generosity of hundreds of Haileybury parents. I look forward to expanding on these topics in our 2018 Report on Giving. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION

I really wish to thank them for the chance that they have given me HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS CHANGE LIVES

Tyrone joined Haileybury in Reception at Castlefield.

Receiving a Parents and Friends of Castlefield (HPFC) Scholarship in Year 7 allowed him to continue at Haileybury when he might otherwise have been unable to. Now studying Year 10 at Keysborough, Tyrone says “It has changed my life”, allowing him to “continue my education with the best opportunities possible”. Tyrone hopes to use his scholarship to become “the best version of myself possible”. “I wish to make multiple Sports first teams as well as achieve a leadership position of some sort, whether that be House Captain or even School Captain,” he says. “I also wish to top the majority of all my subjects, as I know that will be possible if I put in effort.” Tyrone is grateful to the donors who have allowed him to continue his Haileybury education. “The donors really have allowed me to continue on with my life happily and I know I will not disappoint them,” he says. “I really wish to thank them for the chance that they have given me.” Tyrone adds that every donation contributes to another student accessing the amazing education and opportunities that Haileybury provides. “Haileybury is like another home for me personally, as I have been there for most of my life,” he says. “It has made me the person and character I am today.”

WINGED HEART SOCIETY HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION IS FORTUNATE TO HAVE MANY ALUMNI, CURRENT AND FORMER PARENTS, AND STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAVE COMMITTED TO LEAVING A BEQUEST TO THE SCHOOL. Those who indicate their intention to leave a bequest to Haileybury are automatically added as members of the Winged Heart Society. A bequest may be made to the School in general or may be applied to a particular purpose – for example, towards a scholarship, or to help fund building works at a particular campus with which you or your family have been closely associated. In recent times, we have been humbled to have received bequests from the estate of the late Arthur Bailey (in honour of his son, Gary ’82) and from Gwynne Cox, on behalf of her late husband, Ian (’47). We are proud to announce the significant impact of these bequests. In 2019, two students at Haileybury will be the recipients of the Gary Bailey Memorial Scholarship and the Ian W Cox Scholarship. Both students would not ordinarily have been able to attend or continue to attend Haileybury had it not been for the generosity of their benefactors. Should you require assistance, we would be pleased to put you in contact with a qualified lawyer who will take you through the required steps in making a planned gift to Haileybury Foundation.
