By Local Author Reveals All!

PLACE-NAMES Their Origins and Meanings

'Suffolk Place-Names: their Origins and Meanings' has just been published by local author David Mills from Monks Eleigh.

This new book explores and celebrates the ancient place-names of Suffolk so as to reveal their underlying meaning and significance. Most people will have wondered at some time or other about the original meaning of a place-name, and it is NEW certainly the case that many of Suffolk's towns and villages have delightful, interesting and indeed curious names. Who can BOOK fail to be intrigued by names like Bricett, Cattawade, Copdock, Groton, Snape and Shimpling? Why Babergh, Bildeston and Boulge, Eye and Iken, Rattlesden and Rishangles? How did Hitcham, Knodishall, Nedging Tye and Walberswick get their A. D. M ILLS names? What on earth does Wetheringsett or Kettlebaston mean?

In fact all these Suffolk names, like most of the 700 names listed in the book, have original meanings that are not at all apparent from their modern forms. Most are at least a thousand years old and date back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It is only by tracing each name back to its earliest spellings in the records that its original meaning can be discovered and its original significance appreciated.

Besides the Alphabetical List of names, the book contains a full Introduction placing the names in a historical context, and a Glossary of the old words found in the names. Suffolk's place-names are the earliest recorded expression of its language and dialect. Once their likely origins are explored and revealed, they yield important and fascinating glimpses into many aspects of Suffolk's past: its Romano-British legacy, its widespread colonization from the 5th century onwards by Germanic tribes (mainly Angles), its later Danish Viking settlements, its agricultural economy and its social history.

Local grower treats budding young gardeners to a pumpkin patch tour Children from Kersey CEVC Primary School were treated to a pumpkin patch tour this October thanks to the East of England Co-op and its Sourced Locally grower Lindsey Lodge Farm of Hadleigh. The farm supplies the East of England Co-op with local strawberries, raspberries, runner beans and especially for Halloween, pumpkins.

As a family favourite, popular for Halloween, the seasonal squashes were a perfect way to engage the schools pupils, aged 7-9 years, in topics such as seed dispersal and the plant life cycle.

Farmer Andrew Sturgeon, said: “We were pleased to introduce Kersey School to our farm and help the children understand how we produce the food they see in their local shops. It was great to also be able to show how we both maintain and develop the natural environment”. Pumpkins are as delicious as they are fun. As well as expanding the children’s gardening knowledge, Kersey School have been introducing more cooking lessons to the learning in line with the new national curriculum. Mrs Dabbs, the class teacher joining the tour, said: “The children had a really enjoyable visit and had lots of questions for Andrew. The visit was a wonderful opportunity to take the learning outside of the classroom and bring our learning to life.”

Lodge Farm pumpkins are part of East of England Co-op’s Sourced Locally range.

Introduced just over seven years ago, the range has grown from just a few suppliers to more than 140, bringing over 2,400 local products to stores. Demand for local produce has been strong, growing by 30% in the last 12 months, demonstrating just how important local suppliers and the Sourced Locally brand are to the Society, its members and customers.

Garry Spinks, Manager of the East of England Co-op supermarket at Hadleigh said: “Today’s visit was a great way to show the children how the pumpkins grow and tell them more about where their food comes from.”

The East of England Co-op is gaining many plaudits for its Sourced Locally initiative having won the national Hermes and Retail Week Supply Chain awards, the national Dairy Crest Rural Action Award in the Responsible Business Awards, run by Business in the Community, and the East Anglian Daily Times Business Award for Food and Farming Excellence. The initiative has also been shortlisted in the ‘Farming Partnership of the Year’ category at the British Farming Awards, which will be held on 23 October.

Seeking Partridges I am hoping to find some family connections in the Hadleigh and surrounding area related to one Frederick Partridge (Fred). Fred who originated from Hadleigh became a teacher, married a lady who I believe was called Sylvia and they lived in Fred and Sylvia Partridge Seven Kings, Essex. They had two daughters, Christine and Kathrine. Christine married William Dunbar and they had a daughter called Fiona, now 53 and a son, Stuart, now 51.

Lavenham Players present ‘Don't Dress for Dinner’ You won’t need white tie and tails for ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ but handkerchiefs may be useful to wipe away the tears of laughter. The farce from French playwright Marc Camoletti - a master of stage philandering and misunderstanding and follow-up to his hit theatrical sexual slapstick ‘Boeing Boeing’ is this year’s winter warmer from the Lavenham Players. The hilarious confusion and antics, the characters tripping over their feet and their lies as they dance around who’s sleeping with whom, and vice versa, is as rich a mix as Crêpe Suzette. Ah, or rather, oh, la la there’s the mix up with Suzette the cook and Suzanne who is the mistress of Bernard whose wife Jacqueline is Bernard’s best friend Robert’s lover. And there’s the rather angry George who is Suzette’s husband.

The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance invites all to attend their open Dementia Awareness Day on the 14th of November at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure centre. This event intends to introduce the Dementia-friendly initiatives of the Dementia Action Alliance as well as engaging with members of the community living with dementia and those with an inclination to support their community. The Dementia Action Alliance have produced a series of questions which are designed to qualify and categorise areas of necessity when equipping Hadleigh to be more dementia-friendly, which they intend to roll out with the open Awareness Day being your first chance to give them your feedback. Can You Help Us? Hadleigh’s Porch Project needs a voluntary Treasurer from January. The Porch Project is a small, award winning local charity that thinks big and is going places and we need you to help us. This is not a particularly onerous role but just needs someone a couple of hours a week, with a good head for figures.

You will join a young (some of us at heart) dynamic and dedicated team of volunteers that meet once a month. We are based at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh but are a fully independent charity and there will be a full handover from the retiring Treasurer. Thank You Peter and Julie Phillips would like to thank everyone involved in fund raising and helping with our CRY Heart Screening which took place at Hadleigh Leisure Centre in May 2014. The Screening was great success with over a hundred youngsters from the age of 14 to 35 screened for the undiagnised heart conditions that show no symptoms and are resulting in the death of at least 12 youngsters a week. £8500 was raised to cover the costs of the screening in memory of our darling 25 yr old daughter Rebecca who collapsed and died November 14th 2010, it was a devastating time and even four years on it is so hard to come to terms with this, which is why we wanted to have a Cry screening to help prevent another family going through the awful ordeal of losing a child.

A big thank you to the management and staff at The Hadleigh Leisure Centre for all their help in making the screening run so smoothly and to the CRY team for their hard work.

Local Woman Hot Foots It to Charity Success On Thursday 18 September Anita Postle of Hadleigh overcame her fear of fire and walked over burning coals to raise over £700 for Suffolk Family Carers. Anita decided to undertake this challenge after hearing the horrendous stories of what some carers (some as young as 7) have to endure on Radio Suffolk. She also felt it was an unusual event to do for sponsorship and was something that would test her to her limits. She said “it was the most amazing experience ever, it was so exciting and totally breath-taking, I ended up with a few small burns under my toes but nothing serious”.

To boost her fundraising efforts Anita organised a Charity Night in conjunction with the White Hart at Boxford. She would like to thank Nic, Ben & Chris from the Hart, the Musicians who entertained us all evening, all the local businesses who supplied wonderful raffle prizes and of course everyone who came and made the evening such a huge success.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard in Whatfield Hello my dear Readers, Frank and Maria do love to tinker with their computer. They tell me that recently on a Facebook page there was discussion of various things ‘Gibbons’. How exciting and I am taken at how observant everyone is. Facebook seems to delve into one’s computer and mix and match one’s contacts. For that reason, Facebook is not something that I have had much to do with. It was only fitting that my entourage should travel to Whatfield as it has become Suffolk Village of the Year. I have friends and clients in Whatfield and so many congratulations to them all.

Whatfield is a little distance and so I would be more than happy to visit clients at home there should they need me to do so.

I have recently been engaged in a property purchase which should have been perfectly straight-forward except that children were selling their mother’s house and seeking to rely upon a Lasting Power of Attorney as authority to do so.

Tucked away in the depths of the Lasting Power of Attorney though was a provision that the attorneys had no authority unless the Principal who granted the Lasting Power of Attorney had lost mental capacity. It turned out that the owner of the property was of full mind and was able to sell herself and indeed wanted to do so. One always has to keep a weather-eye open for these things.

Sadly a dear friend of the family who so enjoyed his classic cars died in September after fighting cancer for several years.

I attended his cremation at Seven Hills Crematorium at the end of September. I have been to several funerals at Seven Hills and its modernity almost disguises that it is a crematorium.

A recent East Anglian Daily Times supplement was given over to various Ipswich firms of solicitors. There were pictures of groups of grey men in drab suits gathered outside of office front doors. It wasn’t a very exciting advertisement for the profession. It struck me that so many of those people had little real experience of the outside world or of running a business. The closure of Monks Eleigh School this autumn was not just a blow for the children at the school and their families, but for the whole community. A vital component of village life has been lost. It was frightening to see how quickly the school became unsustainable once news of the unfavourable OFSTED report was received and some children were hastily removed to other schools in the area. Lengthy acrimonious debate seeking to apportion blame is not particularly constructive after the event, but lessons do need to be learned. With this in mind I have asked for the case to be looked at carefully by the Education Scrutiny Committee to see what the council could have done better.

The situation in Monks Eleigh brought home to me the importance of supporting the other schools in the Division, in Kersey, Whatfield, Cockfield, Elmsett, Lavenham and Bildeston. I try to go to see at least two of these schools each term, aiming to strengthen their relationship with the County Council, and to take messages back to those responsible for maintaining standards. I was very pleased to learn that the recent OFSTED report received

by Elmsett School saw the school’s rating improve to an overall ‘good’. Indeed all but one of the schools in Cosford are currently rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

(The one that remains is also going in the right direction under new leadership.)

Across Suffolk the picture is less satisfactory. However, there are small signs that the Raising the Bar initiative, aiming to improve educational standards in the county, is showing early signs of success. O and A level results this year bucked the national trend, showing a small improvement overall. Recently published figures from the Department of Education also show Suffolk’s 5 to 7 year olds making steady progress up the league tables in key attainment areas.

Recently Whatfield was named Suffolk Village of the year - a great achievement for Whatfield residents and recognition of a good deal of hard work. Interestingly one of the reasons given by the judges for the village’s success was the close ties between the community and the school. Supporting our local schools does make a difference!

First Novel Published For Local Author A controversial crime thriller will be released next month, with Hadleigh and the surrounding villages having provided the inspiration for its setting.

Lionheart, the début novel of Elmsett-based writer, Robert Taylor, has already gone on pre-sale on Robert Taylor Amazon, with an official release date of November 27th. Robert, 54, came up with the initial concept for the novel three years ago, and saw it evolve following the infamous Norway killing spree of Anders Behring Breivik. At the time, Breivik attributed his actions to an “anti-Jihad crusader organisation” in the UK, led in part by a mysterious leader who called himself 'The Lionheart'. “I had already started, but all it took was that little bit of inspiration,” Robert said. “In the weeks and months that followed, I got carried away with my imagination and the whole story unfolded in front of me.”

Despite being registered blind, due to an inherited condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, Robert worked tirelessly to complete the project. He added: “I've always wanted to write a novel – not necessarily to have it published, but to prove to myself that I can. “There have been many times when I've had an idea and started putting something down in writing, but rarely has it got past a first chapter. Life just gets in the way. “I don't know what it was, but with this it was different. I was discovering the storyline as I went along.

“When I started writing it, I had no idea where it was going to finish, so I always looked forward to writing the next chapter to see what would happen next.”

Upon completion, Mr Taylor began looking for publishers, and just like all the great writers of years gone by, he had his set-backs before Book Guild publishing decided to take him on. The novel follows the storyline of journalist, Sean Bryant, who at the beginning of the story has just submitted an article that threatens to expose an underground, extremely right-wing organisation.

Led by the enigmatic 'Lionheart', whose identity is one of the big mysteries of the story, the organisation has intentions of infiltrating top government positions and believe they have the answer to 'society's undesirables' and minorities, including the blind.

BUMPER DAMAGED IN A CAR PARK? Then you should call...

Babergh Councillor for South Cosford (Green Party) Supermarket Levy Perhaps the most positive thing to come out of the battle of Tesco’s application to build a superstore in Hadleigh was the consensus that a giant supermarket, with remote shareholders and little commitment to local purchasing, would not be good for the area. This is why one of the first things I did on becoming Babergh’s first Green Party councillor was to propose a motion at the council that asked the government for new powers to levy extra business rates on superstores of rateable value of more than £500,000.

A levy of 8.5%, say, would amount to an extra £670,000 in total from the six biggest retail units in the district, including Morrisons in Hadleigh. That is a significant amount for Babergh but less than 0.5% of the turnover for the big stores who mostly rake in at least £10million each per year. The idea that this levy would affect their business in any way is laughable.

Independent Shops Before Giant Chains Small, independent shopkeepers contribute far more to the local economy than giant stores. Research by the Federation of Small Businesses shows that 50p in every pound spent in an independent shop is returned to the local economy, compared to just 5p from the supermarkets. And yet, small traders are made to pay a far higher proportion of their turnover as business rates than the superstores. The supermarket levy would have gone some way to redress this balance.

Cross party Support My motion was seconded by Conservative councillor Jenny Antill and had the support of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, and of Penny Wilby who acts for many independent shops under “ThebestofSudbury” banner.

Stifling debate On the day, the acting chairman of the council, presumably after consulting with some party leaders, decided to defer the motion without debate to strategy committee. The chairman has the discretion to do this under the new constitution. This is unfortunate because it gives the impression that political leaders in Babergh do not want an open debate on the subject. However, I will be allowed to present the idea to that committee on November 20.

Meeting cancelled The lack of open debate is still worrying. A full council meeting was cancelled in July apparently on the grounds that there was no business to discuss. If only that were true. There is the small matter of a £1million surplus from last year that has been put into a pot labelled “strategic priorities”. Babergh is about to build several dozen new council houses for the first time. Hurray! Perhaps some of that surplus could be invested in making the council homes low energy houses, ensuring that tenants have tiny heating bills and the council a more secure rental income.

On Saturday 29th November, Monks Eleigh Bygone Collectors Club are hosting a display of Victorian Oil Lamps in the green barn at Bridge Farm Barns (Corn Craft) in Monks Eleigh. Before the advent of electricity, oil lamps were a crucial part of any Victorian home. These elegant and decorative lamps will be lit to create a colourful and unique display which will give a warm cosy glow and put visitors in the festive spirit!

The lamps will be on display from 2.30pm into the evening.

Star studded Pro Am at Stoke by Nayland precedes the LETAS event The Ladies European Tour Access series at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa kicked off to a sparkling start with a Pro Am graced with some famous faces.

Actress, Magic FM Radio hostess and Strictly star, Denise Van Outen and former Westlife singer and solo artist Brian McFadden brought their friends along to play on the championship Gainsborough course at Stoke by Nayland. Brian, who skilfully plays off 11, was accompanied by former footballer, Neil Razor Ruddock, and a friend from Ireland. Denise, who has only recently started playing golf and has Brian McFadden tees off become passionate about the game, watched by Neil Ruddock brought along TV presenter Zoe Hardman and friend, Kirsty Williams. Their Professional was another close friend, Rachel Drummond. Both teams enjoyed a 2 night stay in the hotel’s luxury Country Lodges which are idyllically situated near the hotel on a wooded hill, with fabulous views over the courses and Constable Country.

Brian later tweeted to fans “If you haven’t been to Stoke by Nayland I highly recommend it. Beautiful place. Had a lovely few days there”. And Denise said “Love our lodge at Stoke by Nayland. Cant wait to play the course again and have a cheeky spa treatment”. Both stars were interviewed before the game by BBC Look East and ITV Anglia.

Other Pro Am participants included BBC Look East’s Stewart White and ITV Anglia’s Jim Rice. Edwardstone Christmas Trees I would like to advise our customers that we will not be able to provide fresh Christmas trees in the popular smaller sizes of 4 to 6 ft this year. This is due to the fact that I was not able to plant fresh stock 5 years ago, which has fed through to our saleable stock for this year and also due to a busy season last Christmas. However, we will have larger trees in the 8 to 30ft range for sale.

Why you should install Solar PV this Winter Well we have had a fantastic year this year as far as sunshine is concerned, but as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo recently reminded us, our weather is always subject to change and no more so than during the winter months. As the nights draw in thoughts of installing solar PV is probably far from your mind. However, now is a good time to install; let me explain. As 2015 approaches there are 3 things that I can safely predict; Christmas will arrive sooner than we all expect, energy bills will continue to rise and there will be an end of year surge of solar installations.

Why a surge in solar installs, well it is due too the imminent cut to the Feed in Tariff. Ofgem, who manage the UK’s feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme have confirmed that the FIT will be cut by a minimum of 3.5% on 31 December 2014 and so homeowners are keen to install by then in order to secure the best tariff. The drop in FIT is not unexpected. Every quarter Ofgem re-assess the amount of PV take-up across the country and then adjust the FIT accordingly.

The last three quarters have seen the FIT remain static, but scheme rules state that a reduction must occur at least once every 3 quarters. The good news for those who do install PV is that once you are on the scheme, our FIT becomes fixed for the next 20 years and your FIT payments, which are tax free, will actually start to rise in line with the RPI. This is an excellent way for homeowners to counter the effects of rising energy prices.

Grandparents Lunch This is an annual event at our school and always proves to be very popular. This year our kitchen produced 160 meals for our hungry children and their ‘nans and granddads’. Of course roast dinner was on the menu!

Harvest Festival Assembly Reverend Tiffer contributed to our harvest assembly and parents also attended. The children were asked to bring in any non-perishable items so that we could contribute to the food bank. Youth Speaks Students in Year 9 have been given an opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills in a new ‘Public speaking’ competition. The competition is called ‘Youth Speaks.’ Students deliver a speech they have written themselves to a panel of judges from Ipswich Rotary Club. Students can decide on their own topic. For example, so far some of the ideas floating around have been ‘Do schools encourage obesity?’ and ‘Should America have stricter gun laws?’

If they make it through, they will get to go to Suffolk One College to compete against other schools in the region.

Sporting Success Over the past six weeks a large number of our sporting teams and individuals have achieved great success in each their disciplines. Our Year 10 hockey team have had great success in their past few games against St Joseph’s college winning by seven goals. However the next week they played a tough game against Copleston High School which ended 0-0. The captain Tommy Downie said, “the game against St Joseph’s college was fantastic we worked well as a team.” Will Beven played an excellent game scoring 4 goals and lead the team by example. As well as our year 10 hockey teams success all of our other hockey teams from Year 7-11 are still undefeated as we head in to half term. At Hadleigh High School our netball and basketball teams are coming together really well with the U16 girls coming second to Copleston in a regional netball tournament and the basketball starts next half term. The football has really kicked off with our many boys and girls teams triumphing over the other teams around Suffolk. The Year 7 and 11’s have had one loss and one win with one more game to come in their leagues. On the other hand the Years 10s have done even better by getting to the knockouts of the County Cup. The team was Fin Longman (c), Chris Warren, Billy Goodrich, Landry Mbe, Max Tate, Josh Stacey, Ollie Smith, Daniel Shanks, Michael Carrigan, Lewis Sowman, Caeal Casey and Jamie Colcomb.

Year 10’s trip to the seaside On Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th of October, Year 10 Art students travelled to Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings to view works by Maggi Hambling, as well as visiting the beach, and participating in other activities throughout the day.

The day started with the students being dropped off at Aldeburgh beach, where they walked along the shoreline, photographing items of interest, and visiting the famous sculpture ‘The Scallop’ by Maggi Hambling. Students then got the opportunity to go into the town, where they explored various art galleries, viewing some local and famous artists’ works along the way. After the art galleries the pupils were free to wander around the town, where some bought postcards and other items as local souvenirs.

At lunchtime the pupils were given the chance to buy the ‘legendary’ Fish & Chips from the shop on the Aldeburgh coastline. Pupils described them as ‘divine’ and they sat on the wall on the coast to enjoy them for half an hour.

After this the class travelled by coach to Snape Maltings, where they photographed the lawn sculptures, including a large brass horse and cart and a long boardwalk style bridge with names of various donators and sponsors engraved into the planks.

A member of staff described the trip as a ‘successful day’ and that the classes were ‘very lucky with the weather’ on both of the days.

The staff also said that their favourite moment was when the class visited the Scallop, as they could listen to the sea, as well as photograph the seascape and gather some inspiration for their Art coursework.

Sports performers of this half term This half term brought great success for the sports players at Hadleigh High.

Many rugby players went to Suffolk trials and some progressed even further.

Mr Cook recommended Year 10 boys for Norwich trials with great success.

Connie Powell, Katie Roberts, Georgia Clements and Alice Mayhew all got into Eastern Counties for rugby. Connie was spotted at a school match and asked to go to Eastern counties Training. Katie couldn’t go to trials due to an injury, however at a training session she was spotted by some of the Eastern county coaches there.

Callum Jeffery managed to get into an elite youth pathway at Northampton for rugby and also managed to get trials for the London Broncos, a team one tier below the Super league.

Fin Longman, Caeal Casey, and Lewis Sowman all got put forward by Mr Cook for Norwich trials; all of them got in and are now on a ten week trial programme. They have their first game in the half term and we wish them the best of luck.

Matt Smith applied for National squad for Sailing and succeeded in getting in.

This places him in the top 10 sailors in his class in the UK and he is now training for the World championships next year.

The Long Walk

On the 26th September everybody at Hadleigh High School (from the Year 7s to the kitchen staff) took part in the eleven mile walk from Hadleigh through upper Layham and Polstead. “It was a challenging walk,” said Matthew Bone from 10D. This is not surprising as it was a hard walk made harder by an excellent variety of exciting costumes. Bracken Farrow from 10O said she “really enjoyed the day and it was made better because everyone made an effort”. Mrs Wing, the organiser of the event, said that the school was “hoping to raise up to £10,000”. Half of this will go to the school to pay for equipment which will be beneficial to students’ education, the other half will be split between the six house charities (Ormiston Family Trust, EACH, Home Start, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Suffolk Family Carers.) All the students felt it was a great day that ran very smoothly. “It was superbly organised” said Jack Orriss 10O. Some forms went for a fancy dress theme, others a theme in friend groups; these included morph suits, film characters and even the spice girls. Other children dressed completely differently to anyone else for example one child did it entirely wrapped in newspaper. Prizes will be awarded to the students with the best costumes and also to those that raise the most sponsorship money.

Battle of the Bands Rehearsals have now begun at lunchtime for the famous Battle of the Bands.

Last year’s winners, Toppesfield, are determined to win this year. This form competition involves at least one student from each year, as well as a teacher, as they battle to win. A member of staff said, ‘It is a good experience for the pupils, and helps them to gain confidence’.

There are a lot of people we would like to thank for the months of September - October, firstly thank you to those who came along to our Charity Dog Walk and Open Day with BBQ, it was good to see some new faces along with our regular supporters. It was nice for locals to be able to see some of the work we do at French’s and relax at the BBQ with our rescued horses watching on from their fields. French’s had a nice donation from a chap called Dave and his Labrador Charlotte, from Holton St Mary, if anyone out there knows whom I am talking about, please let him know Jann would like to speak with him and say thank you.

On 4th October staff, volunteers’ and Coco was invited to Jimmy’s Farm to take part in the Sowing The Seeds For Wellbeing on a Mental Health Day, as part of French’s is a Care Farm that help local people in need. Enclosed is a lovely picture of Coco supporting A Pledge from a young man saying; I Pledge… to treat all people equally and never be judgmental!!

We managed to last till 2pm and then the rain and wind sent us running for the hills.

On 11th October a Wine Tasting Quiz Night in Polstead Village Hall was sponsored by Majestic Wines and arranged on behalf of fund raising for our Horse Rescue Charity. What a huge success it was, with around 100 people in attendance and a fantastic job Diana, Ian & Charlie Witts and Mandy, John & Charlie Flathers did. Mandys mother Daphne who is in her mid 80’s, was incredible selling so many raffle tickets. Many of the Witts and Flathers family and friends helped put on a fun night (with some pretty stiff questions) that was had by all.

French’s are aiming to hold a Curry night in early November locally, if we can talk a curry house into helping us!! So keep a look out for our poster.

Closure of the Main Hall at Lavenham Village Hall Some of you may already be aware, but this lets everyone know about the closure of our Main Hall at Lavenham Village Hall from 12th January 2015 until Monday 19th January. We are having our floor repaired and re sealed. The entire process takes a whole week and we look forward to re opening the hall with a lovely shiny new floor. Christmas Craft Fair at the Town Hall, Hadleigh The Town Hall in Hadleigh is playing host to our Christmas craft fair on the 15th November 2014.

The Hall will be crammed full of beautiful handmade festive crafts and gifts. Simply events held their Autumn craft fair in the Town Hall last October, the fair was hugely successful and we had a busy flow of visitors allday coming along to see the fantastic range of quality handmade crafts on display. The Christmas craft fair will be open from 10am – 4pm with free entry and will be run over two floors, the main hall and the dining room where you will find crafters and a delicious range of homemade cakes and savouries for you to sample inbetween the beautiful crafts and gifts.

One Ipswich company is looking for your support with their forthcoming festive fundraiser, raising valuable funds to help local families and individuals affected by poverty. The Hearing Care Centre, which offers private hearing care across Suffolk and Norfolk, is again organising one of Suffolk’s biggest quiz events, all in aid of Families in Need (FIND) and their winter food bank appeal.

The event is being held on Sunday 30th November 2014 (7.00pm), at Greshams Sports Club, on Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night. Karen Finch, MD of The Hearing Care Centre said “This promises to be a brilliant night out in the run up to Christmas.

If you are looking for an inexpensive evening out to celebrate the festive season with friends, family and colleagues, then this is for you!” This is the eight trivia fundraiser organised by the company with over 1,300 members of the public raising more than £10,000, so far from previous years. The aim of the event is simple – to raise as much money as possible. Teams for the quiz can include between 4 - 6 members. Entry is £4.00pp (festive nibbles included), and there will be lots of cash prizes to be won (not just for the winners). FIND handed out more than 3,000 food parcels in 2013, along with a further 1,140 Christmas hampers. It is estimated that over 500,000 people in the UK are now reliant on food aid – the use of food banks and receipt of food parcels.

Our walk this month will be on Saturday November 15th. It will be one of David Warner`s special half country, half suburban walks of surprising interest. We will leave by Bus from Hadleigh Bus Station (Car park side) at 9.30am. and travel to Sproughton Cross Roads. We will then walk to Ipswich via Belstead Park, Ellenbrook Park, Pinewood Alder Carr, Ashground Plantation, Bourne Park, Maidenhall, Old Stoke, and New Cut West. There will be a comfort, and refreshment stop at one of Old Stokes favourite Hostelries, the Ship Launch Inn. We will return to Hadleigh by Bus leaving Ipswich Bus Station at 2.15pm. and arriving back at 2.45pm. This walk is 6.5 miles in length, and is suitable for all walkers. Strong shoes, or preferably walking boots should be worn as some parts of this walk can be wet, and rough in places. There some wonderful views on this walk, especially giving its close proximity to the South Western Boundary of Ipswich. It will be well worth the effort.

SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2014, 6.00 pm, St Peter’s, Sudbury Philippa Hyde soprano, Mark Caudle viola da gamba Essex Baroque Orchestra Gainsborough’s Musical Friends The painter Thomas Gainsborough was intensely musical and included many prominent professional musicians in his circle of friends, including Charles Frederick Abel and John Christian Bach, the joint promoters of the most successful and prestigious concert series in London in the 1760s and 70s. In this concert, complementing the current exhibition Carl Friedrich Abel at Gainsborough’s House, we explore music composed by Gainsborough’s friends, much of it performed at the Bach-Abel concerts. The programme includes orchestral songs and a symphony by J.C. Bach, Mozart’s extraordinarily accomplished first symphony (written at the age of eight when he was in London with his family in 1764-5), and music by Abel featuring the viola da gamba or bass viol, including a concerto and the beautiful aria ‘Frena le belle lagrime’, for soprano, gamba and strings. Abel was the last great gamba virtuoso in the eighteenth-century tradition, and his playing inspired Gainsborough to take up the instrument.

A pre-concert talk ‘Gainsborough & Music’ will be given in Gainsborough’s House at 4.30 p.m. by Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House.

The Rosa Simon Music fund: first grant made, call for more funding applications The team behind the Fund had a really great meeting with about a dozen representatives from local schools (including the High School), churches, playgroups and registered child minders.

We were able to confirm that the four main grounds for applying to the Fund would be: · Buying and giving away percussion instruments for younger children to use · Buying orchestral instruments (such as clarinets) to loan to older children who might otherwise be unable to do so · Funding tuition costs for playing orchestral instruments for older children who might otherwise be unable to do so · Funding music therapy and support for youngsters on the autism spectrum The Fund has also made its first donation: £170 for the cost of guitar tuition to a local Year 6 pupil. We are now encouraging as many local schools, churches, playgroups and registered child minders to apply as possible.

As readers may know, Whatfield CEVCP School is a very small school less than 2 miles from Hadleigh, and yet we are known for providing a ‘wide range of stimulating activities’ which the children love.

We have been celebrating the arrival of Autumn with pumpkins, tomatoes, marrows and beans picked from our allotment. Our favourite and most popular vegetable was undoubtedly the sweetcorn, which we picked fresh, and then rushed back to school to cook as soon as we could. It was so tasty we had no need of butter! However this year we also produced some fantastic pumpkins. We celebrated with the making of some delicious pumpkin soup, inspired by the book by Helen Cooper, which is a particular favourite of Class One. We are so grateful to the grandparents who help us to tend the vegetables, and to harvest them at this time of year.

We were also proud to be able to collect a wide range of donations for the Harvest service, which went to the Trussell Trust in 21:48:42 Ipswich. Our Harvest Service was led by Reverend Barbara Stanton, and it was lovely though rather sad to think it was our last meeting with her before she moved to her new parish in the west country.

Many readers will have noticed that Whatfield recently achieved the accolade of village of the year. This was due to a lot of hard work on the part of villagers, in particular Mrs Landon, as well as some contribution from the school. Apparently our school representatives impressed the judges enormously, and they were invited to help receive the cheque on behalf of the village. Our parents always say that the nurturing environment of a small school can help children develop self-confidence and belief which may be more difficult in a larger setting.

We have been so pleased to manage to regain our Philippino hut. Last winter, in the dreadful storms, we lost the hut which had stood on our field for the last five years.

We found it had blown into the surrounding trees, and was too broken to mend or use, so had to be taken down.We have finally managed to replace it, and I am pleased to include a photo of some of our children with Mrs Cross.Mrs Cross is a great friend to the school, and was the person who completed all the paperwork to allow us to get a grant from the Arts council for the hut.

She was the officially the first grown up to sit in it again!

If you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are always welcome, although we are having a special open morning on November 10th, along with a French café, where everyone is invited to enjoy a French breakfast and a tour of the school. Jackie Gosling, an adult rider, has been a regular and stalwart member of The Shelley Centre for many years. She has on several occasions qualified and represented The Centre at the RDA National Dressage Competitions, winning places in her class. In September she raised £3000 for The Centre, outstanding. From wheelchair to aeroplane to falling thousands of feet through the air on a parachute jump is an amazing feet of courage, especially with a disability. Our sincere thanks and admiration go to Jackie with her indomitable spirit. To have goals to aim for is important for our riders. Six of them took part in a most enjoyable and instructive ‘Pony Day’ at the Centre in September.

This involved stable preparation, horse care and riding. Two riders passed Riding and Horse Care Grade 1; one - Riding and Horse Care Grade 2; two Horse Care Grade 3; and one -Riding Grade 4. After lunch we had a long ride through the local paths and fields. Congratulations to them all and grateful thanks to the helpers who supported them.

We are delighted this term that several new volunteers have joined us enabling us to take on four new riders.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Every year in Autumn I have the intention to get the garden into a state such that when Spring comes the empty vegetable beds are all ready to plant, the borders are weed free, and the greenhouse is tidy. I have never actually achieved this, but that is not a reason for not trying again. At the moment Mary is busy weeding the borders, and I have one vegetable bed cleared and sown with grazing rye grass as a green manure, and a second bed nearly clear. I am also in the middle of cleaning the glass in the greenhouse. Doing this job demands a dry mild day because cleaning the inside face of the glass inevitable means that some plants will need to be moved outside.

Most of the summer vegetables are over and cleared away, but in mid October I am still picking a few courgettes. I have never had the plants grow as big as they have this year. Ridge cucumbers also went mad this year. Two plants of a heritage variety called Boothby's Blond gave me over a hundred cucumbers.

Weather Records In September at Kersey there was 17.3 mm (0.7") of rain, which is only about 40% of our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of September was 149 mm (5.9") which is close to the average figure. In September the maximum temperature was 22 Cel (72F) which equals the lowest since 2000, and the minimum temperature was 9 Cel (48F) which is lower than average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 14 Cel (57F), which is the warmest that I have recorded for mid October. In early October we have had a lot of rain but it has stayed mild. As I write gales are forecast.

Hints As the weather permits carry on with planting shrubs, fruit trees, and hedges, and overhauling borders. A start can be made on hedge trimming. If possible leave hedges carrying berries until later to give the birds a chance. The way that the weather is suggests that the final grass cut will be in November this year. Cut it when it is dry, and raise the cutter to leave it a bit longer than you have it in Summer.

It is not too late to plant more bulbs. November is a bit late for daffodils, but they will still give a good show, and it is about right for tulips. If you want to keep your dahlias, lift them as soon as they get frost damaged, cut the stems back to about 6", and store the tubers initially upside down in a frost free place that is not too hot. In the vegetable patch rough dig any vacant space, and leave for the frost to break down. One can plant broad beans, hardy peas, and Japanese onion sets.

If you grow cacti they should now be given their Winter rest with little or no water until the Spring. In my greenhouse the desert cacti will get none, and the forest ones like the Christmas cactus and the epiphylliums just a drop every 2 or three weeks.

We had a good attendance at our October meeting, maybe because our most well known speaker was going to tell us all about his exotic garden in Norwich.

Unfortunately Will Giles has been seriously ill and attending hospital on a regular basis - as we didn't know until one hour before the meeting, that he would not be able to get to Hadleigh, we quickly had to put 'plan B' into operation. Committee member John swung into action re-arranging the seating in the Town Hall and organising a most entertaining quiz. Table three were the winners with some very knowledgable gardeners taking the lead in answering the questions - the prize a large tin of Quality Street, was passed around for all to enjoy. After a break for tea and biscuits and a chat - the raffle was called.

On Monday 10th of November Dudley Chignall will be taking us on a "Journey to Paradise"- well I am sure we would all love to go there, especially now the daylight is reducing and the temperature is dropping. Hope to see you in the Town Hall at 7.30pm, members £1, visitors £3.

The Annual National Lifesaver Defibrillator Awards hosted by the national cardiac charity SADS UK honours people who are saving lives in the community. Attended by the eminent cardiologists, the Resuscitation Council (UK), College of Paramedics and ambulance service trusts around the country, this is a truly prestigious evening. On October 18th a celebratory evening was held to acknowledge Lifesavers in the community. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre, former Duty Manager Piers Merryweather will be honoured during the evening for the action he took to save the life of a gentleman who collapsed in the gym on the 16th May last year. Piers was summoned to the gym and after quickly assessing the situation asked a member of the public to go to the reception and ask the receptionist to call for an ambulance and then to return to the gym to confirm this had been done. Piers had by then asked a lifeguard to get the defibrillator from the main office downstairs.

A second member of staff (non-qualified as a first aider) arrived on the scene and offered assistance. Piers could not detect either a pulse or breathing so he commenced CPR on the man and administered the defibrillator. An off duty nurse who had been attending a class in one of the other rooms offered to help with the CPR and Piers asked her to assist and take turns doing the chest compressions. At approximately 7.47pm a paramedic arrived on site and started to work with the staff on the treatment to the man. The ambulance arrived at 7.55pm where the two paramedics treated him. After the man had been stabilised he was taken to Ipswich hospital. The ambulance crew and paramedic that attended site had nothing but praise for the actions taken by Piers and staff on the night and were not shy to make the point that without them taking action in their opinion the man would have died.

The off duty nurse who assisted with compressions had nothing but praise he wanted to make it very clear that Piers and gym staff were the ones who did all the hard work and felt that they should receive credit.

Mick Packer, Contract Manager said, In the leisure industry staff are given many health & safety related training courses and sometimes go through the whole of their leisure career without ever being involved in any incidents of this nature. Incident training happens on sites but can never create the stress / tension / seriousness of an actual incident. In my opinion for a relatively new member of staff to carry out this lifesave using his skills and knowledge in such a professional manner is an outstanding achievement.

2K <<HV ,,WÂśV //DGLHV 11LJKW Kersey Mill Newsletter A mill has stood on this site at Kersey for a 1000 years, it is mentioned in William the Conquerorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s survey, the Domesday Book of 1086. It could tell some tales and interesting stories. We are always keen to hear of any to add to our collection and to build on the wonderful history. The present Mill was constructed in the early 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s by Whitmore and Binyon, a major task when one sees the wonderful mechanics, it is quite amazing to think how that was achieved with such basic tools and equipment in those days. Today we have electricity, lighting, modern lifting and drilling devices, and still we struggle.

We are now working on the repairs to the waterwheel, installing 20 new buckets each bucket taking considerable time and effort,.

We now have seven in place, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been hard and heavy work, although we are learning and gaining experience with each bucket fitting. Special thanks go to Bill Griffiths who has been giving up his Sundays to help. He is extremely knowledgeable and has been a valued member of the volunteers.

Our team of volunteers show incredible dedication coupled with amazing enthusiasm, so many different people who have come to help in so many different ways, with the aim to make the mill a working example in Suffolk again. The help and support that has been received from so many has been quite remarkable.

All those that helped raise funds for the restoration project with Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshop and his Elves last year are back again this year. The purchase of the buckets was from funds raised by Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshop, thanks to all the children and their parents who supported the event.

The volunteers involved were from the local community here in Hadleigh. We are aiming again to run these events every Friday Saturday and Sunday from November 28th. The tickets are now on sale and the proceeds will help us further with the restoration.

Weather permitting, there will be other attractions available including childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roundabout and swings, Glass & Craft will have their craft studio open where you can try your hand at glass painting, ceramic painting and also decopatch.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Ladies Section Elizabeth Evans Rose Bowl Fourteen ladies entered this year’s 18 hole singles matchplay knockout competition.

Matches have taken place over the summer months leading up to the final which was played on Saturday 4 October. Margaret Bentley played against Suzanne Shaw-Smith and had to give her 5 shots. Twice Margaret chipped in and unfortunately Suzanne had rather a bunker day.

The eventual result was a win for Margaret receiving the Rose Bowl from Roz Clements, Ladies’ Captain Margaret 6 and 4.

During the summer months the knockout matches have been closely fought with the final being played on the 26 September on the Gainsborough Course. Irene Fielding and Maria Gilgar played against Fran Chandler and Christine McVeigh with Maria and Irene winning 3&1 and claiming the trophy.

As always “Fun in the Sun” at the Hadleigh Tennis Club President’s Day. The last Sunday in September saw Hadleigh Tennis Club celebrate the end of the summer season with the traditional President`s tournament. The tournament is a fun event but still with a competitive edge. Members of The club play tennis in a variety of match formats, including mixed doubles, ladies and men’s doubles and this year a tennis quiz round. Throughout the morning event individual players accumulate points towards the result of the tournament. As always, the tournament was well supported by members of the club and their guests, with competitors striving to win the “President’s Cup” and other prizes.

The eventual winner by only 1 point was Ben Daniels, who received the “Ken Goddard memorial cup”, from Peter Richards, Hadleigh Tennis Club president.

Other prizes were won by Liz Allen, Eunice Scott, Jan Richards, Ellen Williams and John Parry-Williams for various achievements. The competition was followed by a convivial buffet lunch where members and guests discussed the points that “just got away”.

Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees have been held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season).

Girls and ladies cricket Starting soon at Hadleigh High School Do you fancy a new activity/challenge? Getting fit and having fun? No previous experience is necessary. We are about to run 6 weekly sessions of cricket training with experienced coaches. The 6 session course is funded by Sportivate and are really keen to encourage all girls and ladies from 14 years upwards. At Hadleigh Cricket club we have an excellent girls section (which started 4 years ago) and we are now looking to start a ladies’ team to engage in some friendly games with local clubs.

Storehouse Foodbank at Waitrose in November Will you support our emergency Christmas hampers weekend at Waitrose on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November? Sadly, we have seen a significant rise in local families and individuals in crisis and would value your support. Many will face a very Christmas time unless we can help them. We know that a number of you have already been generous. In October we saw a wonderful abundance of food donations come in from local churches and schools from their Harvest services. We were quite blown away by our community.

In partnership with Waitrose in Sudbury, we are able to do considerably more for local people and help them stay hopeful for the New Year. Last year at Christmas time we were able to feed around 450 people. It would be wonderful if we could match that figure again. Throughout the year our Storehouse team of volunteers operate two regular weekly ‘Drop In’s at the Christopher Centre where local people in need can collect emergency food and receive a sympathetic ear. We also provide a bridge for getting further support, such as help with managing our fear of money through our free CAP Money courses, as well as providing other resources. By showing them practical kindness we see many lives turned around and hope restored.

Storehouse Foodbank is a community programme initiated by Stour Valley Vineyard Church, which is based in Sudbury’ It serves people in Sudbury and the surrounding villages and now has 30 Collection Points where people can drop off food any time throughout the year. Our partners include churches, schools, businesses and shops. Jed Seeley smashes Newton Green Course Record Junior Jed Seeley has smashed the amateur course record at Newton Green Golf Club by two shots - and also beaten the lowest professional score. In a club qualifying Stabelford competition he scored 45 points off a handicap of three, while going round in 63 shots – six below par. Seeley, 17, is an assistant in the club shop run by Tim Cooper, and recently made his debut for Suffolk second team as the county tied up the Anglian League title.

He was also part of Newton’s recent Hambro Cup success, and hopes to begin a three-year PGA course under Cooper when he becomes 18 in a years’ time. The previous amateur record of 65 was jointly shared by Russell Oakey and Mark Duthie, while Cooper holds the professional record of 64. Seeley, who was partnered in his record round by fellow Suffolk junior Harvey Watts, was even for the first six holes before scoring seven birdies in 10 holes.

However, he was undone on the long, par- three 18th, as he registered his first bogey of the day – a fate which also struck Duthie on the same hole in his recent round. Seeley also passed the previous junior course record of 66 set

by Adam Woodhead, and his new handicap is 1.7.
