Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s next concert is on 30 November at 6 pm in St Gregory’s Church in Sudbury.
St Gregory’s is not the largest church in Sudbury but it is the prettiest and the most historic with a lovely acoustic. The evening opens with Bruckner’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, one of his earliest orchestral works, then there is Haydn’s gorgeous Trumpet Concerto with returning solo trumpeter Cameron Johnson followed by Beethoven’s Second Symphony which is a really joyful work, great fun to play and great fun to listen to.
Haydn's Trumpet Concerto was written well over two hundred years ago when most trumpets could only play 10 notes and were about eight foot long. By Haydn's time a new trumpet had just come along, shorter and with keys which could play a lot more notes and Haydn took full advantage of this when he was commissioned to write a concerto for this new fangled instrument. That instrument never really repertoire.

Trumpet soloist Cameron Johnson last played in Sudbury almost 10 years ago He has played with many of the UK’s leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He also performs in the commercial world with recent highlights including Sting’s Christmas party and the wedding of the Duke of Somerset.
Today music lovers say, its classic Beethoven - full of energy, surprises, great tunes and great contrasts. A really exciting work to end the concert.

At the Open Day in September, volunteers at the Hive Community Hub in School Street, Sudbury, welcomed over 40 visitors to tour the building, hear about the history of the former United Reformed Church (before it was purchased by Hive), listen to short concerts of organ music by Roger Green and, for those who wished, to try playing the organ too. It has long been hoped that the Conacher organ in the Hive Hub might provide training and practise for people who wish to learn to play the organ, with the possibility of setting up an organ school there. With all the work on the new heating system now complete in Friars Hall and adjacent rooms, the building is cosily warm for the groups using it. Eighteen new radiators have been installed, designed to retain a radiator temperature of 45o and be safe for halls where children and vulnerable people meet. The system is powered by a large, domestic gas boiler and the system is already working well, creating a room temperature of 70o.

I begin this report of the goings on at the Shelley Centre with a special announcement. There is a major problem brewing. This concerns the number of volunteers who help out at Shelley. The ponies and riders are completely reliant on volunteers to keep the Centre running. The Centre is a charity with only one employee, our amazing Stable Manager, Abi. She is supported by the team of volunteers to care for the horses, run the riding sessions and raise funds to keep us going. As time goes by, volunteers do drop out for all sorts of reasons: some move out of the area, some have additional family commitments, others have health problems and so on. Lately, we have lost a number of volunteers, and this is putting pressure on those remaining. Although experience of working with horses is welcome this is not necessary – many of our volunteers had no previous experience. Full training will be provided, and you will join a team who are great fun and will give you a warm welcome. The Centre provides riding sessions Monday to Friday during school term time with a morning and afternoon slot that volunteers

perhaps come along to experience a session and meet the human and horsey team please ring the Centre – details can be found below.

The photo of the happy two sisters, Hannah and Arinna on our largest horse, Cali and one of the small ponies, Thomas, illustrates the enjoyment our riders get from their sessions.
We have recently welcomed two new ponies to the team Sausage and Tiny Tim. Sausage began life as a show cob. At 16 hands high, this six year old bay gelding will be one of our bigger horses, suitable for our adult and taller children to ride. He has settled in really well and loves attention. He is now being ridden by an able-bodied rider in sessions to get used to all the props and toys we use with our disabled riders. Tiny Tim is a grey
friendly and inquisitive temperament is is learning how to become more patient when waiting in the yard! He has passed his initial assessment is is beginning to join sessions under supervision. It should not be underestimated how special our RDA horses are – they have
activities, which is why it takes time and patience to introduce new horses into the team.

To remind you, our next fundraising event is the Novmber at Hadliegh Football Club, 7.30pm. Details on our website. Tickets available on https://the-shelley-centre-for-therapeutic-riding. sumupstore.com/
