Don’t miss Kersey Christmas Gift Fayre You can be sure of a warm welcome at Kersey Christmas Gift Fayre this November when the church is once again bathed in the light of hundreds of candles as visitors begin their Christmas shopping in this beautiful setting. Add to this, the wonderful singing of Christmas Carols, the odd glass of mulled wine and unique and beautiful stalls - you are in for a Christmas Shopping delight. The Kersey Christmas Gift Fayre has become an important date in the local calendar for shoppers and helpers alike. The wonderful volunteers come from a complete cross section of the community, many of whom have helped at the event since its inception over ten years ago. Help comes from the village and beyond – the wonderful choir from Bildeston, an outstanding team of students from Hadleigh High School who are on hand to help on Friday night, and Kersey Primary School children and parents who come and help on Saturday – this is what makes it an event with real heart. Fundraising for local charities has always been an important aspect of the Kersey Christmas Gift Fayre. During the past ten years money has been raised for Sick Children’s Trust, ClicSargent, Kersey Primary School and St Mary’s Church. The continued and generous sponsorship from Carter Jonas has ensured that all of the money raised at the event goes directly to the charities and Teenage Cancer Trust will be the focus charity again this year. ‘Visitors to the event love the quality of the stalls on offer, the beautiful setting, the warm and friendly atmosphere and the fact that they are also supporting local charities.’ But don’t take their word for it – go along yourself and make it an unforgettable Christmas Shopping experience.

An award-winning lifestyle firm is planning to donate £10,000 worth of replacement windows and doors to a community building in need of a revamp. SEH BAC, part of One Group Construction, has launched the giveaway to celebrate 45 years of trading, and is asking the public to nominate a community building that they or their community group uses. Managing Director John Savage of SEH BAC, which runs 17 show centres across East Anglia, Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, said: “We’ve been Norman Hornigold and John Savage fortunate enough to have been supported by the public for 45 years and because of this we want to give something back. “We feel the best way to do so is to offer a one-off prize of what we do best – improving property. There is bound to be a community building out there that desperately needs our help. We just need to hear about it. “All it takes is a small amount of time to enter – the payoff could be great for your community building.” To take part in the competition, simply visit www.sehbac.com/community to see terms and conditions and to fill out the entry form. Closing date is 20 November 2016.

Lavenham Christmas Fair Friday December 2nd, 5.30 - 8.30 pm Saturday December 3rd, 11 - 5.30 pm Sunday December 4th, 11 - 4.30 pm As you will know, if you have lived in Lavenham for long, the Christmas Fair brings welcome tourists and visitors, keeping the village vibrant and business buoyant over the winter. Last year's event was the most successful so far and, as victims of our own success, there are a few more hoops to jump through this year. Namely: traffic management, signage and public parking areas. There have been additional arrangements made but all areas urgently require volunteers to guide and marshal traffic. Several clubs have been asked to help: cricket, football and pre-school who all have able-bodied young men and women. We are appealing for help over a 1 or 2 hour rota at the designated parking areas and where parking is permitted using one side of the identified roads. Any additional volunteers would be warmly welcomed to make this year's Lavenham Christmas Fair a successful event -with no traffic problems! If you can help in any way, Contact Bruce Goddard 01787 248471 Thank You, The Christmas Fair Team

Sunday 6 November 2016, 6.00 pm St Mary’s Church, Boxford Sebastian Comberti cello Katharine Durran Broadwood pianoforte Beethoven Sonata in A major op. 69 (1808) Mendelssohn Sonata in D major op. 58 (1843) Brahms Sonata in F major op. 99 (1886) Sebastian Comberti makes a welcome return to SVF with a programme bringing together three of the greatest 19th-century sonatas for violoncello and piano, written roughly 40 years apart. Sebastian is one of the world’s leading cellists specialising in historically informed performance, and he is partnered here by the distinguished pianist Katharine Durran, well known for her work accompanying famous singers and instrumentalists. She plays the historic and beautiful nineteenth- Sebastian Comberti century Broadwood piano at Boxford, played by David Owen Norris, Steven Devine and others for SVF’s forays into 19th-century music. In association with Gainsborough’s House Thursday 17 November 2016, 7.00 pm The Quaker Meeting House Sudbury With pre-concert talks by Mark Bills, Peter Holman & Sonia Wronkowska at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, 5.30 - 6.30 pm. Abel: Polish Discoveries Mark Caudle viola da gamba Teresa Kami ska violoncello This special concert celebrates Sonia Wronkowska’s extraordinary discovery of at least 25 unknown viola da gamba sonatas by Carl Friedrich Abel from the collection of Count Joachim Carl von Maltzan, now at the University of Poznań. Maltzan was Prussian ambassador in London from 1776 to 1782 and one of the circle of pupils and admirers of Abel that also included Thomas Gainsborough. The new sonatas are mostly mature, sophisticated and virtuoso works, composed for Abel himself to play in his celebrated London concerts, in contrast to those known hitherto, which are nearly all undemanding teaching pieces. Abel was the greatest viola da gamba player of his day, an elegant and accomplished composer, to be ranked with his friends Johann Christian Bach and the young Mozart. Mark Caudle divides his time as a viola da gamba virtuoso between East Anglia and Poland, and has appeared at SVF many times. Sunday Special! Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that Thomas Isaac, one of Britains up and coming cello superstars, will be their soloist in Haydn’s 2nd cello concerto in their concert on Sunday 26th November. Thomas began playing cello at the age of 6, and now studies at the Royal Academy of Music where last year he won first prize for his performance of Bach’s Suite for Cello no 2. He performs with many leading orchestras as Principal Orchestral cellist both in the UK and Europe and this year appeared in a BBC Proms Extra concert. As a soloist Thomas has performed in many venues including the Wigmore Hall. In our concert Thomas will be performing Haydn’s 2nd cello concerto, a true classic in which the cello sings and dances with graceful and lilting melodies, playing a surprising number of passages in soprano range. This piece challenges the most brilliant of cellists, stretching the instrument to its fullest capacity. Sudbury Symphony Orchestra will also be performing Schubert's 9th symphony The Great Symphony in C major. The symphony was almost lost to the world until Robert Schumann discovered it and recognised it for what it was. The symphony has wonderful tunes and movement as though riding through countryside, here trotting, then a canter, then a pause to take in the view. There is a spontaneity in its grand development. A rich and immensely enjoyable musical journey. We hope you will join us for a spirited and inspiring musical evening. Tickets: Adult £12, Child £2 Available mid October from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury and Sudbury Tourist Information (library) email: tickets@sudburysymphonyorchestra.com A limited number of tickets will be available on the door. www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com

Squirrels What a busy first half term! The children have settled very well and are enjoying learning new maths and phonics skills. We recently enjoyed a visit from our local PCSO who told us all about her job role. The children enjoyed dressing up in uniform and even having their finger prints taken! The highlight for the children was definitely being allowed to go in the police truck and watch the lights flash! Hedgehogs have had a busy few weeks learning about the different food groups and where food comes from. We had a very exciting trip to Morrisons where we tried different fruits, made pizza and looked at the bread being made. We have also been continuing to learn about the importance of staying safe when using the internet. We had a visit from the local PCSO who talked to us about the importance of keeping our personal information private. We really enjoyed looking in the police truck! Badgers class have had a fantastic start to the year. We have just got back from an amazing trip to the Tower of London. We learnt all about the Tudor kings and queens and got to see all of the Crown Jewels. We were also lucky enough to be able to walk across Tower Bridge to see a different view of London. We are also working on our sporting skills at the moment by playing netball and having our weekly swimming sessions! As part of our ICT topic this term we are creating our own cut out animation based on our trip to London. We hope to have them finished and available on our website soon! Owls have been learning about the features of a river, and we will be looking more closely at these on our trip to Flatford Mill on 18th October. Whilst there, we will be dipping in the water, discovering the ecosystem of the famous mill stream. We have also been studying the clouds, much like John Constable did many years ago. We noticed how clouds can take on a variety of different colours and shapes, and we have use different media to show this in our Art work. Owls have made their topic books this term, to keep all of their work inwe are very proud of what we have achieved so far. Was your child was born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013? If so they will be starting school in September 2017. Parents with children born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 must apply for a reception place at a primary or infant school by 15 January 2017. Start your festive shopping at Stoke by Nayland Christmas Fayre in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice The hugely popular Stoke by Nayland Christmas Fayre is returning this year on Thursday 19 November, raising funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. The fayre will be open from 9.30am – 3.30pm at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa at Leavenheath near Colchester, and will include over 50 stalls all selling a fantastic range of festive gifts and goodies. Brian Taylor, St Elizabeth Hospice’s partnerships fundraiser, said: “This wonderful event has been going for over 20 years and always attracts hundreds of festive shoppers from Suffolk and Essex. There are so many unusual items on the stalls that you won’t find on the high street - all under one roof – it’s an easy way to sort all your Christmas presents. All entry costs, plus 10 per cent of the stall takings go to your local hospice. “It’s organised by a team of dedicated volunteers, who give up their time for free and has raised more than a staggering £138,000 for the hospice in total.” Entry is £5, payable on the door, which all goes to St Elizabeth Hospice to provide local care to more than 2,000 patients and their families living with progressive illnesses in East Suffolk. St Elizabeth Hospice is a local charity which costs millions of pounds a year to run and it relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs. GSOLICITORS IBBONS

Howard at The Ipswich Hotel, Copdock My dear readers: you are so lucky to have a firm of solicitors such as mine right on your doorstep. I hear of so many horror stories of people using some on-line legal service or an enormous combine where the person that one deals with is not a solicitor and may not be qualified, one never speaks to the same person twice and cannot meet with them face to face. Our clients will deal with me all of the time and can come and see me and have the benefit of 31 years of experience. That is a very good deal and at a reasonable fee. Into the bargain, I fight for the interests of our clients. Naturally business is largely conducted electronically but we provide a good old fashioned service for those who are not happy about E-mails and such like. Whether you are buying and selling a house, taking a lease of an office, writing a Will or wanting to grant a Lasting Power of Attorney then please contact us. As you will know, my office is on the corner of the High Street as one goes round towards the Council Offices. The amount that one can leave following one’s death without paying Inheritance Tax will increase from 6 April 2017. The additional nil rate band for a residence (fully effective for a value under £2 million) and left to direct descendants comes into play. In the first place, the additional allowance will be £100,000 and one can carry forward £100,000 for a spouse or civil partner that has predeceased at any date. I had a lovely lunch at The Ipswich Hotel formerly known as The Cameo and on the old A12 at Copdock, now under new ownership. You will all remember the hotel, well it is being rejuvenated with substantial renovation in hand. Why not try the hotel for Sunday lunch, a function or a stay. The restaurant was light and airy. There is a large banqueting suite and vast car park so it would be excellent for weddings, classic car events, meetings and conferences. As you know, I am not in the habit of dining with my household staff and there is a super bar where my chauffeur Frank could get a ploughman’s. I am pictured with Rameth Kurdi, the Manager who has many years of hotel experience and learnt his trade on the QE2. Telephone the hotel (Tel. 01473 209988) to enquire and mention my column. It is my birthday on 11 November. Frank will deliver locally a bottle of champagne to the person who correctly guesses my age by my birthday (a draw will take place if more than one). Howard Gibbons

This was the second of two big changes at the leisure centre this autumn, the other improvement was the launch of the world renowned Les Mills Fitness Classes. The 30, 45 & 60 minute group fitness experience offer a totally exhilarating workout through a challenging & motivating group fitness class ensuring you reach your workout goal! James Cartlidge writes

Y

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Just as millions of people buy a weekly lottery ticket, with the revenue earned funding good causes locally and nationally, we MPs enter our own unique type of lottery that takes place every week that the House of Commons is sitting. It's the draw to be one of the 15 MPs named on the 'Order Paper' for Prime Minister's Questions, guaranteeing us the chance to quiz the nation's leader in what remains our most high profile Parliamentary event. It is true that we can also 'bob' (i.e. rise in our seat) to try and ask a Prime Minister's Question. This is because Commons tradition dictates that questions should alternate from either side of the chamber and therefore when there are two MPs from the same party consecutively on the Order Paper, there is another opportunity to contribute. But actually being called when 'bobbing' is another lottery in itself. The last time I was drawn for the PMQs Order Paper was the first week back from party conference in early October. This winning ticket, as it were, coincided neatly with the wonderful news about significant Lottery funding awards in South Suffolk. This included £206,000 for Clare Castle Country Park to transform its green spaces, and almost £5m for Gainsborough's House Museum in Sudbury to become a 'national cultural attraction'. It was therefore a great honour to be able to raise the latter success in my Prime Minister's Question. Theresa May responded by saying that "Many people will enjoy visiting Gainsborough's House in the future as a result of the work that will be able to be done". Quite - we should hope that many more people will enjoy visiting not just Gainsborough's House but attractions across South Suffolk, as a result of this success. This will benefit our broader tourism offer which is so important to sustaining local shops across in our market towns and villages. Yet, for all the luck of the draw involved in the lottery, there is nothing lucky about organisations which put in enormous effort to make bids which then qualify for funding. I wish them a thoroughly deserved congratulations!

Local residents, businesses, community groups and schools came together to play Beat the Street in Sudbury and Great Cornard travelling thousands of miles in September and October. Over the past six weeks, Beat the Street has transformed Sudbury and Great Cornard into a giant walking, running and cycling game – residents travelling around the area tapping special Beat Boxes on lampposts has become a familiar sight in Sudbury and Great Cornard. Residents of all ages took part in the community health competition with local schools and organisations created teams and competed against each other to see who could travel the furthest to win some fantastic prizes. Beat the Street Sudbury and Great Cornard is an initiative run by Intelligent Health in partnership with Suffolk County Council. Taking place during Suffolk’s Year of Walking, Beat the Street is designed to inspire whole communities to get moving. Cllr Tony Goldson, Cabinet Member for Health at Suffolk County Council said: “Congratulations to each and every person who has taken part in Beat the Street. “The competition has been very much the talk of the town for the past few weeks and we’ve heard from many people who say they will miss the Beat Boxes. However, if you’ve enjoyed Beat the Street, please keep up the great work and continue to build on the great foundations that you’ve made for your health. We hope you’ve enjoyed it!”

Pause for Thought Can you imagine life without safe water to drink? We just turn a tap and it is there for us. According to the UK Charity Water Aid: ‘650 million people don’t have access to safe water. Without this basic service, they have no choice but to drink dirty water that could kill them.’ I recently visited an Indian village of 3,000 people that until December 2015 had no clean water in it until a well was provided for them by a charity in their land. Everyone everywhere needs a safe and sustainable supply of water: for drinking, washing, cleaning, cooking and growing food. Water was a precious commodity in Bible times too and there is a story in where Jesus finds Himself at a water well. Here He has a conversation with a woman who came to collect water. Jesus knew that fresh clean water is vital for healthy living but He also knew that we can be thirsty for many things: satisfaction, relationship, money, peace, fame, possessions, happiness. That is why Jesus said to this lady: ‘Everyone who drinks this water (from the well) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ John 4: 13-14. Jesus is the only One that can make such a claim and fulfil it. Why not explore who He is at one of the regularly run courses called ‘Christianity Explored’ in your area. Greg Frost

Sarah’s head-shave in aid of Xanthe Carter This is Xanthe, who is 9 years old now, and who is a truly determined and brave little girl! When Xanthe was a baby she contracted pneumococcal meningitis, which caused her to have a major stroke and left her on a life support machine for 2 weeks. Xanthe survived but is severely disabled as a result of her illness; she cannot talk, and she is just learning to walk and she has chronic epilepsy which is life limiting, but Xanthe isn’t a sad, or a quiet person! Far from it! She screams with happiness, and wants to walk, and to be a part of life. To help her reach her goals, we have to give her as much 1:1 therapy as she can have, as the NHS can’t provide enough. This is an expensive job! Sarah’s fundraising will make such a difference to Xanthe’s life; everything that is raised will pay for more speech therapy, physio and occupational therapy, helping Xanthe to fulfil her potential. Harvest Assembly Our children and staff were joined by parents and Rev. Liz to celebrate our school Harvest assembly. Children read poems and sang songs that they had been learning. Our Charity this year was the Food Bank. Donations were collected as the children came into school and these have been taken to help those in need. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations. Ukulele Lessons for Eagle Class Eagle class have started to learn the ukulele. They enjoyed their first session and are looking forward to learning enough chords to play some full songs. The school have even been treated to the song “Rockin all over the World”! Our Roman Enrichment Day KS2 pupils were lucky enough to be able to take part in a Roman workshop. They found out about life during the Roman era and how it compares to today. They created timelines and looked at Roman artefacts and at food during the reign of the Romans. Grandparent’s Lunch Over 160 grandparents over two days joined our pupils for a very special grandparent’s lunch. It is so popular now that we have to allocate two days to accommodate everyone who wants to come along and join us! Of course, Roast lunch was on the menu cooked by our lovely kitchen staff along with a hearty dessert. News on recent accreditations We are thrilled to be able to announce that we are the proud owners of the following accreditations Linguamarque Bronze Award Linguamarque supports the development of Primary Languages in our school within the curriculum in line with government recommendations and defines our achievement by encompassing best practice in this area. Our staff and children worked very hard to achieve this award! Sainsburys School Games Silver Award The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are assessed across bronze, silver and gold levels. Over the last two years we have achieved the bronze award so to now be awarded with the silver has been very positive news. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre This month I want to pay tribute to one of the herd that is retiring. He is black like me, so I feel very sad to see him go. Jet has been here for 15 years, he’s a big gentle giant who loves company and he’s clever: not only did he give our riders wonderful lessons on his body, he could drive! Not a car, you understand, he pulled a carriage for those people who couldn’t sit on horseback any more but still wanted to, and they loved being able to get out and about with him. Poor fellow now has arthritis so he can’t work. He is living in Lindsay with one of our volunteers who has a young family. They have a pony and 2 Shetlands to keep him company, and all he has to do is rest, eat, sleep, and, well, you can guess! I hear Lyn shedding a tear for her big boy; she is bravely trying to find his replacement now and I shall introduce it to you when she’s been successful. Jet’s team of Driving enthusiasts has also retired. We hope one day we shall find some young blood to support this life enhancing activity but meanwhile the normal riding continues a-pace and everyone is very busy; I’m at full canter myself and loving it. The arena looks really jolly from what I can see of it. We have been supported by a local charity set up to help young people in need in the Stowmarket area: AJ’s Legacy. They gave us £300 towards new poles for bending exercises in the arena. These have coloured saucers and hooks on which the instructors hang various objects. The poles are strong and stable, far easier to carry than the old ones so the volunteers love them too. A big THANK YOU to Jayne and Martin Jones who set up the Legacy in their son Aiden’s memory; we are so grateful. Who likes grass cutting, or hedge cutting I wonder? You don’t have to go near a horse to help at The Shelley Centre; our maintenance team would love to welcome more men (I can be sexist, I’m a simulator) so if you are looking for exercise in a good cause, here’s where to come! Social media and breakups - a match made in Heaven?

For you and your family, it’s got to be Gotelee

Offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Melton and Woodbridge

01473 822102 gotelee.co.uk

Like it or not, social media has found a way into most people’s lives, by choice or otherwise. Some couples even have a joint social media account so that they can keep up to date with friends and family in one hit. All is well until a relationship or marriage hits the rocks. Who would have thought that using social media could be a criminal offence? With social media being so accessible and immediate, it’s easy to post in haste and repent at leisure. Posts can be made in seconds, at a time when a person’s rational thinking is clouded or when emotions are running high. The power of social media can be underestimated and posts can go viral in minutes with devastating effects on the victim. It’s now a criminal offence to share intimate photos or videos of a former partner without their permission knowing it will cause them distress. The punishment is up to 2 years in prison. In a relationship breakdown, social media can impact your separation further than you may think. Be aware of how you conduct yourself on social media, generally. Posting status updates as to how you are feeling following the breakdown of a relationship is one thing, but you have to be careful that it does not escalate to you or others making nasty comments about the other. This can be used as evidence in divorce proceedings and injunctions. It is a very fine line that you must tread. Facebook is increasingly cited in many divorce and children cases as evidence of why a marriage has broken down or why a parent can’t care for a child. It could also be used against you to prove unfavourable behaviour such as drunken nights out or compromising positions. You may not be posting these photos yourself, you need to control what impression you are painting in the social media world. It goes without saying that you should never share your passwords with anyone as it may come back to haunt you if things are posted on your social media sites without your permission. For advice on this or any family matter you can email me jane.fowles@gotelee.co.uk or call me on 01473 298184. We have offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Melton, and Felixstowe available for appointments.

The East (no not Lowestoft – a little further than that) comes to Hadleigh!

EXTENDED OPENING TIMES Monday to Thursday 8.30 am - 7.00 pm Fridays 8.30 am - 6.00 pm Saturdays 8.30 am - 1.00 pm Telephone 01473 822704 or e-mail hadleigh@highcliffvets.com 96 HIGH STREET, HADLEIGH, IPSWICH IP7 5EN www.highcliffvets.com The intrigue and magic of the East is coming to brighten up the dark days of winter in Hadleigh. Members of the Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) have started rehearsing in earnest for their spectacular production of the family favourite Aladdin. All your favourites from this well-known pantomime will be present including Aladdin himself, love interest Princess Jasmine, the scheming and wicked magician Abanazer, Aladdin’s mother the Widow Twanley and Wishee Washee – the hero’s well meaning but not overly bright brother. But as this is a HADS performance, they’ll be lots of new characters as well many of them reflecting aspects of living in Hadleigh. These include Demanda Recount, Mining Minnie, Pearce d'Ears and Tortoise Tilly, plus a small army of minions! The pantomime is directed by Russell Allen and Nicola Hughes. HADs stalwart Trev Clarke said “this great panto is suitable for all ages and includes comedy, music and magic. I'm so proud to be chairman of HADS as I see the fun and laughter every week at rehearsals with my fantastic cast and crew. I look forward to bringing you our panto Aladdin early next year!” There are three performances: 19th and 20th January 2017 at 7.30pm and 21st January at 2pm. Tickets available from Keith Avis Newsagents in Hadleigh High Street from the beginning of November onwards. Tickets for adults cost £6 each, with those for children at £4 each. Book now for some really heart-warming, foot-stomping Eastern magic!

TimEAllen Windows s t a b l i s h e d 1 99 4 Kersey Mill Newsletter Huge preparations this month are under way for our popular Santa’s Workshop events which will run throughout December. Our first ever Santa’s Workshop was staged 4 years ago and has grown and grown each year in popularity. We are expecting at least 1000 children this year. With the new frame work within the Mill we are able to use more areas and with this in mind we will be offering one of the most magical Santa’s Workshops ever. There will be craft activities, group singing, interactions with the Elves and lots of fun, the children will enjoy sending sacks of presents up to the upper floors by use of the old Sack Hoist. A truly magical time and one which we are certain will delight the children and adults too, all at a very reasonable cost. With the popularity and reputation we are now attracting visitors from as far away as London Cambridge, Newmarket, Yarmouth and Hertfordshire together with the villages and towns nearer to home. We are thrilled also to be able to offer group bookings and also groups of special needs and disabled children. Please do get in touch if you know or are part of a group who would like to attend. Tickets on sale now - so do please book early. Remember too that all proceeds go to the restoration fund which over the years has helped tremendously with the rescue of this heritage asset. In the New Year we will start phase 3 that is the repair of the Hurst frame grinding machinery and reinstament of the stones. These works are expected to take 18 months to complete. An incredibly talented gentleman David Coe is midway through the building a sixteenth scale working model of the mill. The model will be located on the ground floor enabling visitors who are unable to make the stairs see what happens on the upper levels and easily view the flows. This has already been an incredible helped with the understanding how and in which way the machinery would have worked and how it was driven. David has an engineering background and is clearly highly skilled and a stickler for detail, each timber is within a thousandth of an inch of the original and the cogs wheels stones etc all turn. We are hoping that the model will be complete for May 2017. Photographs show the works on the model to date. For the avoidance of any doubt the waterwheel is within the model and not a photograph of the original.

Christmas Is Fast Approaching – is it time to rethink your dieting method and motivation? • Make a promise to yourself - to go all the way to your goal. It's the most extraordinary thing you can do for yourself - you’ll be amazed at how much better life feels when your body is healthy and slim. Up to now, you've just been thinking about it, now commit to do it - just for you... • Surround yourself with the right people - People who understand what you want because they’ve done it and can support you. Positive people, certainly not negative people who may sabotage your efforts. • Take care of yourself. That means a well-balanced diet, regular exercise and plenty of sleep. Everybody knows how essential they are. Keep hydrated, lots of water and your body, and mind, will work much better as a result. • Visualize yourself at your very best - continually. Improvements in your life start with improvements in your thoughts. • Be kind to yourself. Practice positive self-talk. Say, "I like myself, I am strong, I can do it.” Talk to yourself as if you’ve achieved your goal, not how you are now. Remember, you may be where you are today largely by accident. Make sure your future is purely by design. • Get a sense of urgency. The better you get, the more you like yourself. And the more you like yourself, the higher your self-esteem and self-discipline. • The festive season will soon be here - you could drop a dress size or more and really enjoy the party!! Cambridge Weight Plan has 6 steps which have been devised for weight loss but also help retrain long-term eating to maintain a healthy weight (average weight loss is a stone a month*). Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience so, for individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. November at The Bridge Project I sometimes think that The Bridge Project is one of Sudbury’s best kept secrets! Perched at the top of Gainsborough Street we have a lot going on, behind our admittedly colourful façade! We have a lovely cafe serving really great homemade food, and behind that we also provide support and activities for people with learning disabilities, a mental health support group, a lunch club, film and supper nights, dementia support, paint your own activities and fabulous food to name but a few. This month is going to be one of the most exciting for us in a long time, we will be getting in some practice in our new commercial kitchen in the Pavilion building, many thanks to The Postcode Lottery, in preparation for the expansion of our popular lunch time hot meal deliveries to Long Melford, Acton and Waldingfield next month. Get in touch if you’d like more information about meal deliveries locally. Don’t forget to come in for coffee, a snack, or lunch…or all three - and see for yourself, and also get your orders in for Christmas cakes, mince pies, sausage rolls and the like. And here’s a couple of dates for your diary..16th November come and watch Remember over afternoon tea, or with supper, 3rd December get your unique gifts and cards at our Christmas Fair. Yes it’s Panto Time! and this year Sudbury Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that they are bringing something a little bit different to Sudbury’s Quay Theatre with a brand new pantomime, Treasure Island written in traditional pantomime style by local authors Mike Fahie-Wilson and Bez Berry, and co-directed by SDS Panto stalwart (and last year’s Dame) Malcolm Hollister A bold gang of pirates have navigated the River Stour to smuggle in a show that the whole family will enjoy, bringing with them plenty of traditional pantomime fare, singing and laughter. Join One-Eyed Pete, Billy Bones, Long John Silver, ‘Mrs’ Hawkins and her son Jim as they keep everyone on their toes and share out some long lost treasure! Treasure Island starts on Friday 16th December at 7.30pm and runs for a total of 22 performances, with a variety of evening and matinee performances on offer up until Sunday 1st January at 3pm. Hadleigh loses it’s oldest Freemason Bert Keele was sadly called to the Grand Lodge above on Sunday 9th October 2016, he was the oldest freemason in Hadleigh at 99 years of age. Bert was initiated into the Lodge of Virtue of Silence No. 332 in March 1964, becoming Worshipful Master in 1975. He was still attending and enjoying lodge meetings in Hadleigh on a fairly regular basis until quite recently and as can been seen in the photograph was very pleased to be given Honorary Membership of the lodge in March 2016. Many years ago Bert was one of the instigators in forming a committee and raising funds over a eight year period, to provide Hadleigh with its swimming pool. The Lodge of Virtue & Silence also lost Bert was presented with a 50 very popular member Laurie Munson who Year Certificate by the died on Tuesday 4th October together Provincial Grand Master of with Ron Chamberlin who died on 2nd Suffolk on 10th February 2015 October and lived in Bildeston and Peter Pullinger who died 10th October and lived at Oulton Broad. I’m in danger of missing the editorial deadline, but I do have a genuine excuse, I was busy at The Chocolate Show in London’s, Olympia. With images of Dawn French immersing her head in a chocolate fountain, the first exhibitor I spoke to was familiar with Hadleigh and had conducted business with Hadleigh Maid – such a small world! And as it is my birthday this month, I have my two favourite ingredients in this month’s recipe. Altogether now, Happy Birthday To Me, Happy Birthday To Me, Happy Birthday Dear Me-ee, Happy Birthday To Me! White chocolate and almond cake 175g white chocolate 150g unsalted butter, softened 100g caster sugar 6 large eggs, separated 150g ground almonds Method Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and line a 23cm spring form tin. Chop the chocolate and melt over simmering water. Put to one side. Beat the butter until very soft, then add 50g of the sugar and cream again. Still beating, add the egg yolks one at a time, waiting until each one is incorporated before adding the next. Then slowly add in the cooled, melted chocolate, beating firmly as you do so. Once the chocolate is incorporated, add the ground almonds, beating again to mix. In a large clean bowl whisk the egg whites till peaks begin to form, then slowly add in the remaining 50g sugar, until glossy and firm. Add a big dollop to the cake batter and stir well to lighten the mixture, then fold in the rest gently in three to four batches. Pour the batter into the prepared tin, and bake for 45-50 minutes until cooked through. When the cake is ready it should be beginning to come away from the sides of the tin. Check the cake after 30 minutes as you may need to cover the cake loosely with some foil to stop it burning. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 20 minutes before unspringing and inverting; then let it cool completely.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Penny is my best pal but I wish she’d hurry up when we are out for a walk. This chilly weather is a shock after that lovely Summer and it’s too cold to keep stopping for a sniff! Mind you, we had a warm welcome at Pets at Home in Sudbury last month. Our collection raised £105 which will help with the heating costs this winter. Mum says if you visit us, be careful while we are burying some of the electric cables that feed the outside animals’ bedrooms. That should stop Mum’s 2am nocturnal forays, into the cold when the wind is blowing hard, to check the trees have not brought down the wires. Don’t forget, we animals hate fireworks so please consider attending a local display rather than letting off a few bangs in your back garden. I’m sure you don’t need reminding to take extra special care of your pets during Guy Fawkes celebrations? We’ve had many dogs come and go but Ollie wants me to mention Orvill and Wellington, two kittens that keep getting overlooked. Nothing wrong with them – except they are black of course – but is that such a sin? I’m fairly dark myself and I think everyone loves me so please give them a chance if you are looking for a feline pair to complete your family. Just time to remind you about our Christmas Fair, 10-3pm at the Old School, Long Melford, 20th November. The usual huge selection of gifts, crafts, glass, jewellery, boxed games and jigsaws plus mens, pets and nature stalls. Try our Parcel Game, Tombola and Raffle, have a snack and go home ready for the festive season! Free parking, 50p adult entry. All that talk of Christmas is making me shiver so it’s back to my electric duvet for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Last week, staff and volunteers from Sue Ryder in Sudbury, teamed up with their local Morrisons in Hadleigh, to help raise money in celebration of Hospice Care Week. Laura Sargent, Head of Recruitment, Sue Ryder said: “We had a great day collecting at Morrisons in Hadleigh, Suffolk. Thanks to Morrisons Community Champion Lorna McGill who helped us arrange the fundraiser. Customers and staff were extremely generous and helped to raise over £100 in donations. Thank you to everyone who came by to say hello and donated.” Morrisons stores across the UK joined together to celebrate Hospice Care Week, the national annual awareness week which recognises the amazing work of hospices in the UK. Alongside fundraising collections, the supermarket stocked a special Sue Ryder bouquet of flowers which sold out in less than two weeks. Warburtons are also giving their support to Morrisons’ national charity partner by making a donation, each time a customer buys a nine-pack of Warburtons crumpets. So enjoy a hot toasted crumpet this month and you could be helping to provide incredible hospice care and support to thousands of families. Morrisons Raise a Smile partnership with Sue Ryder has raised over £6 million, helping Sue Ryder to provide over 123,500 extra hours of incredible care a year, supporting families across the UK facing the most difficult times of their lives.

We are pleased to let people know that our care farm now has a licence to ride and are able to offer pony and horse experience sessions with us, where you will be able to groom, sit on and ride one of our ponies or horses. We will also be offering pony parties to children whose parents want something different for their child as a birthday or special treat, please call Jann for more information and to book a place for 2017. Do you have good letter writing skills? Are you retired or semi-retired and would like to help us? We are looking for someone who has some spare time and can offer help to our charity. There are many people in and around Hadleigh who are retired or semi-retired that have a huge wealth of knowledge and life experience to offer, we would be grateful if one of the local residents could help us with the important task of letter writing and helping with applications. A new child has recently come to French’s Care Farm for the therapeutic help we provide, the local child is 6 years old and has come from a broken family and unfortunately had to be taken into care for awhile, which sadly left the child feeling insecure and with little confidence. For us at French’s it has been wonderful to see the difference over just a few weeks, to how the young child has grown in confidence, while being around the farm and animals. Hopefully with our help this child will learn to feel comfortable and reassured enough to be able to move through their important early school years with a more confident outlook on life. I was told recently by another local charity that they had 90 volunteers on their books and could not find enough for their volunteers to do, because they had too many and have been turning help away, this is quite sad for us to hear, when we offer valuable services to the Hadleigh community and are crying out for volunteers. If you or a member of your family would like to take a volunteers role with us, please get in touch, because we do want you! Thank you to all who came along to our Autumn quiz night. Our next one will be in the spring, so keep an eye out for the date in the February issue of Hadleigh Community News. URGENTLY NEEDED....Hay and straw for our rescued horses and Donkeys, if you or someone you know has some spare hay or straw sitting in their barn, please pass it on to us, our animals get through so much in the winter months and your hay or straw would be very much appreciated. A 13 strong group joined us for October’s walk. This month, the walk will start and finish in Hadleigh. We will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 on Saturday the 12th November. We will head North from Hadleigh via the Castle then via Oaks Tye, Rushes Farm, Drakestone Green, Semer, Crouch Farm, Cosford Bridge, Peyton Hall and back to Hadleigh. Some of the walk will cover familiar territory but a substantial portion takes in new ground for our group. The walk is around 9 miles in length and we will stop for a rest break/snack along the way. We anticipate being back in Hadleigh around 1330. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

Fête to Remember! "This Christmas our Fête de Nöel is going to be even more magical than ever” enthuses Cathy Bullen who, together with her husband Peter, run the now celebrated Boule-in French Fairs in Bildeston “we have so much to celebrate” and indeed it seems they do! “It’s now 6 years since we returned from living in Provence and starting up our French collectables business - 5 years of events in Bildeston and 2 successful years with our shop in London - a magical whirlwind of an adventure that’s far from over….but it’s not just that” she grins “ I just LOVE all things glittery so it’s a wonderful excuse to over indulge on the decorating, especially as 'French Christmas' has a unique charm all of its own: It’s also fun that we go on into the evening so everything can be lit up for extra sparkle!” There’s no doubt that a trip to the Boule-in Fête de Nöel (Thursday 24th - Saturday 26th November) will offer you a truly unique and charming Christmas shopping experience. With all their stock authentically sourced from France they fill their barn and garden with decorative collectables and thoughtful, affordable gifts to make purchasing as well as giving an extra pleasure this Christmas. Trip to Albania by the Thrift Shop Our 20th annual trip to The downtrodden country of Albania was very successful, as usual. We visited all the families and schools that we support Palumb and his 3 children, Orphan boy Emiliano, Zamira and her large family, Albania and Kelly and their small daughter, Valentina and her two children Merita and Florence, A school in the far flung village of Suchica and a school in the capital Tirana with 1,000 pupils. They all have very sad stories to tell and starting next month we would like to tell you about one of them at a time. From the heart we thank everyone who supports our shop in one way or another, be it by donating goods, buying them, volunteering in the shop (we still need more so please contact us if you are interested - 828800 or 828510. Just one half day a week would be of great help to us. Next month we will list all the latest list of LOCAL organisations we have recently helped. We add our Man with a Van, Laddie who will pick up ANYTHING you cannot bring to the shop yourself. Again, thank you all so much for your generous support, which has been happening for the last 17 years!!! Last but not least the picture is of some boys in the team at the village of Sushica, with their sports teacher and the Head Master wearing a kit kindly donated by the Hadleigh U'8s football team a big thank you from all of them.

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Rob Sherriff was our October speaker for a fascinating talk on all you need to know about growing dahlias. Rob is a renowned dahlia expert who, with his wife, sells his own blooms from his own nursery in Leavenheath, where he has some spectacular displays. Dahlias are famed for their bright blooms in late summer/autumn which keep growing whilst everything else is starting to fade – until they are hit by the first frost. Rob showed us some of the many hundreds of varieties, and I was certainly drawn to the idea that this is a plant I should have more of. A bit of work is required though – regular staking, feeding, dis-budding and pest checking are all essential for healthy results. How to deal with its well-known enemy the common earwig is one common dahlia dilemma, the other main one being whether to leave them in the soil or lift the tubers over winter. Rob favours lifting them to make sure your favourite plants live for another year, something which then also helps with propagation to multiply your stock. Our Next meeting – Monday November 14th 2016, we welcome back Deb Hart for our November meeting. Back in April Deb gave an entertaining talk on the uses of willow and, for her visit this month, will be turning her talents to Christmas wreath making. So why not come and join us and learn how to save money by making your own decorations for the festive period? As usual the meeting will start at 7.30 in Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance is opposite The Ram public house). Entrance is just £3 (£1 for members) and refreshments are provided. There will be the usual raffle and plant stall and the competition this month for anyone choosing to enter is ‘Three Nerine Blooms’. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Go wacky in wool for the hospice this Christmas St Elizabeth Hospice is urging friends, colleagues and classmates to go wacky in wool this December, as part of their Woolly Pully Week. Following from last year’s success, the local charity is holding this years’ event on the week between 12 - 16 December, and is appealing for local businesses, schools and groups to don their craziest knit and do their bit for their local hospice. Organisations choose a day during the Woolly Pully Week and on their nominated day, everyone has to wear their silliest sweater and donate £2 to St Elizabeth Hospice. Felicity Rook, St Elizabeth Hospice’s head of fundraising, said: “Christmas jumpers have become such a popular phenomenon in recent years, nearly everybody has a festive top, and Woolly Pully Week is a great excuse to get yours out and wear it to work, school or wherever. “Holding a jumper day is sure to get you in the festive spirit in the run up to Christmas and is an easy and fun way to raise vital funds for your local hospice and help ensure nobody has to face their illness alone this Christmas.” To find out more or to request your Woolly Pully Week festive fundraising pack, visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/woollypully or call 01473 723600 or email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk

Down to Earth ...with Dave At last we are getting some proper autumn weather. A little bit of very welcome rain, some dry periods and even a touch of overnight frost. It will soon be time to get any tender plants under cover- don’t get caught out by a sudden frost. The clearing up on the allotment is progressing very well. The old runner bean haulms have been cut down and composted, the roots are left in the ground as the nodules on the roots are a valuable source of nitrogen. The metal frame stays in place but the bamboo canes are stored away in the shed for use next year. A row of garlic has been planted out but not onion sets. These I grow in small individual pots at home in the greenhouse and plant them out in the spring. It means that they have less chance of rotting and the pigeons don’t get a chance to pull them up. After the talk we had on growing dahlias at the garden club this month it seems to be a bit more complicated than I first thought. But, after taking advice from other garden club members, and as I only want to grow them for cut flowers indoors and not for showing, it may well be that a system for leaving them in the ground on a permanent basis may well work. We can but try. The giant pumpkin being grown at Hyde Hall has been a success. When it was weighed in at the competition in Southampton an astonishing weight of 95 stone had been achieved. This is a new British record. The pumpkin will be on show back at Hyde Hall at the end of October. As it is not really edible, the plan is to make it into some sort of a boat and to launch the chief grower Matthew Oliver onto the lake at Hyde Hall. Back at home in the garden we have a hedgehog taken up residence. It was first discovered when I started to move some leaves up against a wall in a neglected part of the garden. Luckily I spotted it before I disturbed it too much. The leaves were carefully replaced, along with some other dry material. A trip to the supermarket to buy a tin of cat food followed. Apparently the old idea of bread and milk is not recommended. A saucer of food and a bowl of water was put down that night and would you believe it during the evening out pops a lovely little hedgehog to eat the lot! The nest is quite near our French windows so we get a good view. We have been putting out a saucer of food every night and it is nearly always gone by the morning. According to reports hedgehogs are getting quite scarce so we feel very honoured to have one in the garden. Its presence may well account for the lack of slugs in the garden this year. Let’s hope it stays and around and hibernates in its cosy nest. This is a timely warning to check all bonfire sites before November 5th. That’s all for this time, Dave

Following the success of this event last year, the Porch Project is hosting its’ 2nd Fashion Show in St Mary’s Church involving Tatty Broyd’s, Girls Love Roses, Rachel’s, Labels to Love and Hall Street. An array of gorgeous outfits will be showcased together with the opportunity to do some shopping from a number of stalls offering a range of products from accessories to homewares. Once again the organisers are hoping to involve many of Hadleigh’s shopkeepers in this endeavour. We hope that while the evening will highlight all that Hadleigh High Street has to offer, it will also provide a fun evening out for many local people combining shopping, chat and sartorial inspiration in equal measure. Most importantly, we hope that your support will raise some much needed funds for the Porch Project. Alongside the Fashion Show we are again running a Competition for 12 - 20 year olds to reinvigorate an item of clothing bought from a charity shop. The idea is that they will up-cycle any tired, unwanted piece of clothing and modernise it, creating a look for today. We invite any young person to enter and the designs will be showcased at the Fashion Show with prizes on offer for the best designs. The competition will be free to enter and is being organised by the Porch Project Girls Tower so please feel free to contact them directly for details. Tickets are £12 (to include a drink and nibbles) and are on sale at: Tatty Broyd’s, Girls Love Roses, Rachel’s, Labels to Love and Hall Street. Please do come along and support both your local High Street and the Porch Project

It’s a Matter of Taste Everyone has their poison. Mine just happens to be Gin & Rum. Not together! Gin has grown massively over the last ten years and, in the last two years, has particularly catapulted into everyone’s mind via TV, advertising and festivals dedicating prime exposure to the heavenly juniper nectar. Over fourty five new gin distilleries have been set up in the UK over the past few years alone and our mission is to keep you, the gin loving consumer, up-to-date with what’s new, what botanicals are being used, fun ways of tasting gin and where to buy it. GinPunch.com was set up to do two things: Champion small batch (non-supermarket) craft gin from around the UK and educate gin consumers (old and new) quickly and in a light-hearted way without having to read pages of elitist and sometimes condescending text. One of our missions is to get you to SHARE TASTE. Like most life experiences, it’s generally better to share, so we have put together a selection of gin hampers and boxes containing three bottles of assorted craft gin, two great mixers and a packet of gourmet G & T popcorn. Our point of difference is that our bottles are 100ml rather than the usual 30ml or 50ml miniatures so you have four pub measures in each bottle, giving you more than enough to share your tasting experiences. Whether you prefer a zingy citrus hit, a herby savoury flavour or a spicy explosion in your mouth we have all the information to help you make your decisions and an on-board shop so you can instantly order what takes your fancy. With virtually every county in the UK having its own local brand (there are three in Suffolk) and each using its own unique botanical formulations and distilling techniques, you have a wonderfully wide gin palate to choose from and GinPunch.com are there to help you find out what’s available. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh Did you read in an early August copy of the EADT this year the open verdict of the inquest held into the sad death of a Felixstowe man? A post mortem having failed to establish the cause of his death. Apparently he died sometime in Nov/Dec 2014 before his remains were discovered in late May 2015. The EADT reported,"He was found on a mattress which had been moved onto the floor near two heaters". Therefore it would be highly likely that he had succumed as a result of continuous low temperature exposure. That year there were thirty such deaths reported in Babergh D.C. - part of the expected yearly average for Suffolk of three hundred and fifty low temperature related deaths. Our charity Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (plus the adjoining eight villages), is not big enough to tackle the Babergh figures. It's aim therefore is to help keep the Hadleigh figures as low as possible. We are not restricted to the elderly, 65 years and over, as is the Government extra winter fuel allowance. We are here to help those who need support in combatting prolonged exposure to the bitterness of winter. There is no age or disabled restriction, our help is based on being an early responder whilst the more estabilished aid charities are able to give continuing support where needed. Not only do we need to be kept informed of those who are in need of assistance but we do need support in funding. We would like to thank Mr and Mrs J. Cole for their most welcome donation. It is with regret that our very first supporter, Mr. Rodger Howell, has passed away after a short illness. Would you please support our Grand 88 Xmas Draw from our sales points at The Idler Book Shop, Avis Newsagent's and V.C. The Museum Of East Anglian Life has appointed Jenny Cousins as its New Director Jenny’s previous role was at Duxford. Working for Imperial War Museums (IWM), Jenny led the five-year redevelopment of the American Air Museum which reopened in March, and the creation of the American Air Museum in Britain website, which is dedicated to crowdsourcing photographs and information about the Second World War in East Anglia from members of the public. She said: ‘I’m thrilled to be leading the team at the Museum of East Anglian Life. The museum has huge potential and can give visitors a real taste of how our ancestors lived and worked. I’m keen to tell their stories and the stories of recent generations in new and exciting ways.’ Chairman of the museum, Mid-Suffolk Cllr Glen Horn, said: ‘We are pleased to have Jenny on board to lead the museum in the next phase of its development. We are excited about the plans for the museum as it nears its 50th anniversary next year.’ Prior to Duxford, Jenny worked for English Heritage. She led exhibition projects including Charles Darwin’s home, Down House, Lullingstone Roman Villa in Kent and the garden interpretation at Chiswick House. Jenny is a member of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Committee for London. Jenny Cousins grew up in the Lake District and studied history at Balliol College, Oxford and Birkbeck College, University of London. The museum is a space for people to be active, learn new things, look at the world differently, make friends and give something back.

Last month I wrote how far into space our radio waves have travelled and this month I thought I'd write about just how limited we are in viewing the stars in the night sky. Of course, we can see galaxies with optical aid from our back gardens that are millions of light years away, but with the naked eye, we can't see very far into the cosmos at all. The graphic shows a representation of our home in space, The Milky Way, and the circle you see is our naked eye limit when you look at any stars at any time during the year. The total number of stars we see varies because the higher your latitude the less you see; for example we are at a latitude of 51 degrees North and can see ~ 6,800 stars on a clear night , if you were at the latitude of the equator though, you can expect to see over 10,000 stars. This figure all depends on your location of course. We live in a relatively dark area, so we can expect to see the vast majority of the potential 6,800 stars, but move into large towns or cities and you can expect to see far fever; an example is that if you lived in London, you would expect to only see 70 stars, move to Boston or Chicago you would just see 35 stars with your naked eyes, a huge difference and disappointing one for any budding astronomers. All stars are measured in a brightness scale called magnitude. The rule of thumb is the brightest objects have the lowest numerical values; e.g, the Sun is by far the brightest object in the sky and so has a magnitude of -26, a full Moon has a value of -12. Thereafter we approach the magnitudes of the stars. A star with a magnitude of +1 is 2.5 times brighter than a star of magnitude 2 and again a second magnitude star is 2.5 times brighter than a magnitude 3 star and so on. With this you can see a star of magnitude 1 is 100 times brighter than a magnitude 6 star, the maths are 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5. The human eye can see, on a perfect clear night in no light pollution, stars of 6.5, but generally you will see stars down to magnitude 5 or so. With the Winter skies fast approaching , one of the largest stars in the sky is visible; Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion the Hunter. Betelgeuse is the large red star towards the upper left and is a cosmic monster. The star is slightly variable, meaning its brightness slightly varies due to the fact that it is a dying star and its atmosphere expands and contracts, but its general magnitude is 0.0. It lies around 640 light years away and has a mass of around 20 times that of our Sun and is only 10,000,000 years old ( our Sun is middle-aged at 4.5 billion years old). The star has burned through its reserves of fuel at an astonishing rate because of its high mass. The star originally was "born" in the vicinity of the 3 stars in the belt of Orion, but is moving through space at a rate of 30 km/s, this is known as its radial velocity. This star was also the first to be observed with "Sunspots" on other than our star. Another thing is we must keep a close eye on this star because it could go supernova at any time within the next million years. If this occurs in our lifetime, the star would be visible to the naked eye even in daylight and an amazing sight to see, so fingers crossed that will happen, but knowing our luck it will be closer to the million year mark. So, until next month, keep looking up, you never know what could happen! Any questions please do contact me at; neilnorman03@gmail.com. Neil Norman

Don’t let the grass grow under your feet It’s been another busy year at Orchard Barn with lots happening both on and off site. And with one Wednesday a month being spent in a wood near Hadleigh, the volunteers have failed to keep on top of the plant growth within the orchard. However a concerted effort was made to cut back the stinging nettles, brambles, thistles and grass from around most of the fruit trees and we were able to pick the apples and store them away. Of course, the cut vegetation was not wasted. As the compost heaps needed turning we incorporated the green matter with lots of chopped brown material (twigs, bark, etc) with the compost as we turned it. This will keep lots of mini-beasts very happy and provide us with great compost for the vegetable plot (pictured during our open afternoon). We’ve recently started monthly Saturday learning days so if you work during the week but want to find out about composting, deadwood screens, hedge laying, tool sharpening and lots of other practical skills then details are on our website - www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Fidelis Activity News MADE IN DAGENHAM: It’s a lively, funny, clever performance and how much members enjoyed the New Wolsey’s musical version of the real story. Attitudes and clothes were obviously 60’s style but the demands of the Essex girls for equal pay resonate with today’s media headlines. There was also a distinct air of Donal Trump about the cameo role of Henry Ford Jnr. A standing ovation was the audience’s way of acknowledging their polished performance. THE LODGE: This was the venue for the monthly Lunch Bunch gathering. The restaurant is located at the edge of the Suffolk Leisure Park complex at Wherstead. Members took advantage of their midweek offer. This meant they could enjoy large portions of freshly cooked food at the incredibly reasonable price of £9.95 for two courses. The diners decided to leave the outside dry ski slopes, climbing wall and mini golf for another time. ALTON WATER: The Gentle Ramblers spent an enjoyable few hours following the footpath round this waterside location. After this healthy, sociable activity they dropped in on The Place for Plants to relax and take advantage of their delicious refreshments. GROWING PLACES: As part of the social enterprise Realise Futures, Growing Places specialises in helping people in the Eastern region who are disabled and disadvantaged with a range of employment services. Enterprise Manager, Marina Babić outlined the kind of work they provide for around 45 people. This includes cultivating seasonal produce which is sold and delivered in vegetable boxes to around 200 customers. Employees also work in their local nurseries and during the quieter winter months they make and sell their willow work. Profits are ploughed back into the business to create more jobs and learning opportunities. An inspirational concept with a worthwhile outcome. JD

Hadleigh Hares A.C. will be holding their Annual 10 mile, 5 mile and 2k races on Sunday 25th November The Turners Blinds and Shutters 10 mile race has been a popular fixture on the local race calendar for many years and continues to attract club runners and local runners alike. The introduction of the John Chisnall 5 mile race four years ago has proved very successful. In fact, both races sold out before the day last year, no doubt the introduction of chip timing and medals helped with this! We encourage runners of all abilities to take part, the race is marshalled with two water stops on the 10 mile route and one on the 5 mile route. All finishers will be given a medal and a goody bag at the end kindly supplied by the Co-op. There is also a 2k (approx) fun run for under 16's which is sponsored by Hadleigh Physiotherapy. I know they are busy organising special goody bags to be given out with the medals for all finishers. The races start and finish at Hadleigh Football Club and runners and spectators are asked to use the town car parks. We appreciate the support of local residents regarding the extra traffic they may notice. If you would like to take part in the 10 or 5 mile races entries are online at Run Britain and we take only entries on the day for the fun run. There is more information on the Hadleigh Hares website. If you would like to marshal the race please contact hadleigh10@hadleighhares.co.uk Please keep your fingers crossed for a nice dry day!

Back Row: Matt Eaves, Karl Cansdale, Ian Thompson, Richard Cross, Rob Benson Front Row: Paul Champ, Dean Brace, Nick Lee, Derek Prichard, Chris Guy, Don Wiggins Tim Dickens. Played in earlier rounds: Ian Smith, Richard Bland, Julian Lamb Stoke by Nayland Club Captain, Ian Thompson, is celebrating a double success for his 2016 teams after they added the Curry Cup to the Norman Plum Trophy, all in the space of two weeks. The final, against Fynn Valley, was played at Colne Valley where the course had been perfectly prepared with the greens being hand cut. Their Club Captain, Jerry Carrow, welcomed the finalists; neither club had reached a Curry Cup final before. As with the semi final Stoke had a strong start and were 4-2 up after the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles also went well for Stoke with eight wins and a half. The victory was secured when Don Wiggins holed a five foot putt on the 16th hole, 12.5 points to 5.5 points being the final score. Curry Cup Captain, Paul Champ, thanked all his squad for the part they had played in winning the cup for Stoke by Nayland. Jerry Carrow in his speech complimented both teams for the sportsmanlike way all the games had been played and how good it was to have a new name on the cup. So Stoke by Nayland have finished the season in style with two trophies and now look forward to a successful time again next year.

Stoke by Nayland Mixed Knockout Competition The winners of the Stoke by Nayland mixed knockout competition, the Constable Bowls, were a new pairing for 2016, Bev Thompson and John Sandford. They beat the ladies Vice Captain Anne Hemmings and her Bev Thompson, Club Captain Ian husband Brian in the final. Thompson and John Sandford

Newton’s Alice and Lily May head for Portugal Two young golfers who have both been hitting the headlines this year are now playing out of Newton Green. Both Alice Barlow and Lily May Humphreys have qualified to be part of the field in the prestigious Telegraph BMW Junior Championships Final at Quinta do Lago, Portugal, at the start of November. The event will be played on the remodelled North Course, which was named best European New Course in 2014. Barlow, 17, has played at Newton since she was nine, and Humphreys has recently joined following a move by her family to the Alice Barlow Sudbury area. Humphreys, 14, is already an England junior international, and in a number of spectacular successes this year became the national girls’ under 16 champion. She has moved to within a short distance of Newton from the Chelmsford area, where she is a member of Channels, which will continue to be her home club, and allow her to retain links with Essex golf. Humphreys recently qualified for Portugal with a five under par score as one of her four, bogey free rounds in the North of England under 16 mixed stroke play championship at Pannels, Yorkshire. She Lily May Humphreys led the field by six shots and finished 15 under par. This year she was also third in the European Young Masters, and plays off plus-three. As part of the England girls’ eastern junior training scheme, which is led at Stoke-by-Nayland by professional, Rolly Hitchcock, she is now on his doorstep for additional advice. Meanwhile, Barlow has stepped away from professional coaching in the last two years to work with her father, who is her caddy and plays off 12. She qualifies for the trip to Portugal as a result of a four under par she carded in one of her four rounds in the England Girls’ Under 18 championships. Since then, the current Suffolk ladies and junior champion has gone on to be the first winner of the England Girls’ County champion of champions title at Woodhall Spa, the headquarters of England Golf. She also finished fifth in the simultaneous national women’s title event played off the same card. Barlow’s success on the Bracken course has also qualified her to play in the English Women’s Amateur Championships on the former Ryder Cup course of Lindrick, South Yorkshire, from July 18-19 next year.

Festival profits up and party plans for 110th Birthday Bash Newton Green Golf Club’s festival week made a record profit, and plans are in hand to organise next year’s event to include a 110th anniversary celebration. With more than 500 entries across nine different competitions, the aim of the event is to enhance the club’s inclusive policies, with money raising a welcome side line, but not a principle of the week. However, the recent festival netted a record £1,800 surplus, and the money will be used to provide amenities as part of a planned interior refurbishment of the club house. The festival committee heard efforts to reduce the playing time of rounds in the 120-entry Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver had led to the longest round being reduced to four hours 40 minutes, compared with five and a half the previous year. More refinements would be introduced to cut times further next year. The 2017 event would commence a day early on Sunday, August 6, to enable a 110th anniversary afternoon party to be staged. This would include a display of vintage vehicles owned by members and friends, cream teas and a traditional jazz band. The first festival week was held to celebrate the club’s centenary and over the decade since has gone from strength to strength.
