Unsung Heroes recognised at Awards Ceremony Unsung heroes are being honoured at the Babergh Community Achievement Awards on Wednesday 18th March 2015. The awards ceremony, which has been organised by Babergh District Council with generous sponsorship provided by Prolog, will take place at Stoke-byNayland Hotel, Golf and Spa at 6pm. The event will recognise 23 individuals and groups that have given many hours of their time to help the communities in which they live.

Over 30 nominations were received for this annual Awards ceremony which recognises those that provide endless hours of community service in the areas in which they live. Cllr James Long, Chairman of Babergh District Council, who will be presenting the Awards, said: “The Babergh awards have been running for over 20 years and have become an opportunity to celebrate with individuals and groups to recognise and thank them for their hard work and achievements. As Chairman, I am delighted to be able to meet the people that can make a big difference in some of our smallest communities.” Robert Audley, Executive Chairman of Prolog said “I feel incredibly proud to sponsor

the Babergh Community Achievement Awards again this year; the event recognises so many selfless individuals and groups that are giving up their time to support others. The film highlights the individuals or groups work and also features the nominator explaining why they felt an award should be given. Anyone living in the Babergh District and who works in the local community, on an unpaid, voluntary basis, was eligible for nomination. This community work could come in any shape or form, from fundraising work, to campaigning for improved local services, or providing a long-term service to the community.

Buy A Brick for Whatfield Primary School Whatfield Primary School will be inviting pupils, ex-pupils, staff and ex-staff to take part in an exciting opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the School and help fundraise too. We have just had a new school porch built and would like to decorate this with engraved bricks, naming previous staff and pupils. If you were a pupil or someone that worked at the school, you will know that it was a tradition to scratch names into the soft bricks outside. This is an opportunity to leave an official mark for the future. The brick can contain 1 or 2 lines of text, maximum 16 characters per line which includes spaces. For £2 more there is a maximum of 21 characters per line including spaces.

The cost of the brick will be £25.00, or £27.00. This opportunity is not exclusive to current pupils and their families, so please spread the word if you know of someone who used to attend or work at the school and may like to buy a brick as a special memento. Fidelis Activity News Another Flock:- The rag trade was re-created just recently when members formed their own production line to make sheep bunting as part of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015 celebrations. Starting with drawing round templates to machining all component parts together, the ladies produced a considerable number of the colourful, cheery little figures which will adorn the High Street before too long. Apart from enjoying the morning, there was a great sense of achievement which is just as well as several more bunting making sessions are planned for the coming months.

Cartooning:- Considering the work of many famous cartoonists through the eyes of another skilled illustrator was bound to be an interesting experience.

So it was when local cartoonist, Bryan Haylock, came to speak on the subject of Cartooning. Armed with several examples of their work and many anecdotes, Bryan commented on and told tales about Giles, Searle, HeathRobinson, Hoffnung and Hogarth to name just a few. Although he had also brought examples his own most recent work, the illustrations for … book our modest speaker had concealed those in a very large portfolio. It was a fascinating subject about which Bryan is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Jim Lawrence:- There are many factors which must have contributed to Jim Lawrence’s success but top of the list has to be quality, design and craftsmanship. On a recent visit to the company’s headquarters in Hadleigh members were fortunate enough to experience these aspects of his business first hand. With cries of ‘Wow, ‘I had no idea’ and ‘Amazing’ the ladies toured the various areas devoted to creating his exclusive range of lighting and home furnishing products. Meticulously hand crafted by dedicated staff in spacious workshops, it was easy and fascinating to follow the many luxury items from the raw material stage to their safe place in a massive store room. There was also time to browse round the bright, airy showroom with its comprehensive and attractive display of many of the company’s products and soft furnishings.

The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts opened in February with the Dance Section at the Ormiston Academy.

This was a resounding success with talented dancers aged 4 to 18 from all parts of East Anglia. The Adjudicator, Gayle Johnson, praised the level of talent from the performers.

Jan Osborne, Chair of the Festival, also praised the high standard of the competitors, their beautiful costumes and grooming. She stated that 'many thanks most go to the teachers and parents for their support and dedication to the children. I always enjoy the performances and find it very encouraging to see so many young people involved in performing arts. A big thankyou must also go to our wonderful team of volunteers, who without, the festival would not take place'.

It was wonderful to see so many performers from the Ormiston Acadamy and to have so many people in the audiance.

The Festival continues with the Music Section at the Delphi from the 3rd March to the 8th March, followed by the Speech and Drama Section on the 12th March to the 14th March. The Festival Concert on the 22nd March at the Ormiston Academy will showcase the very best performances from all.

We need to keep this uppermost in our minds and send our thoughts out to those caught up in conflict, hoping that compassion, reason, and peace will prevail. We, the healers, at the Hadleigh Healing Society are there to listen and help those who are troubled by what is going on in the world.

Dying – it Matters May 23rd 2015, 10am-4pm St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh In conversation a few months ago, Pauline Thrower of St Mary’s Church, and Kate Brett, of Hadleigh Health Centre, felt a need in the Town of Hadleigh and surrounding area for more openness and discussion about care of the dying and everything surrounding death itself.

Our vision for ‘Dying – it Matters’ is a free, one day event in the style of a trade fair, to be held in St Mary’s Church Hadleigh. It is aimed at the general public, to come and ask the questions of all the professionals present that they have always wanted to ask and find the answers to – for example: What services can the doctors or care homes offer?

What roles do hospices have?

When do I contact a funeral director?

What funeral choices are available and how much do they cost?

Where can I go for emotional support?

What legal and practical aspects do I need to know about?

Of course there are many more questions so we are bringing together under one roof local professionals who can provide direction for you. These include the Hadleigh Health Centre, local Churches, Care Homes, Funeral Directors, Solicitors, Caterers and Florist plus many more.

We have also arranged for an Embroidery Exhibition to be on show for the day and the week following consisting of 10 panels created by a lady expressing her grief at the loss of her husband. This will be supported by a pastoral care team for the week, to support those bereaved and for whom the event may raise emotional issues.

We will be including counselling and support information covering the death of people of all ages and for those who mourn of all ages. We feel it is important that children in both categories are catered for as well as adults.

We are producing a booklet including details of all those who take part in the day which will be issued to those attending, to be a handy reference whenever required.

Our walk this month will be on Saturday 14th. It will be a 7 mile circular starting and finishing at Boxford. We will leave by bus from Hadleigh Bus Station (Coop Side) at 9.50am. arriving at Boxford 10.05am. The walk will leave Boxford Bus Shelter (opposite the Fleece Hotel) at 10.15am. and we will walk through Edwardstone Sherbourne Street. Edwardstone Church, Edwardstone White Horse Green, Smalls Farm, Groton Park, Pitches Mount, Goslings Green, Redhouse Farm, Bower House Farm, and back to Boxford. This walk is suitable for everyone including older children and dogs. Your dog must be under close control when passing livestock.

The walk will finish about 2.00pm, We will then travel back to Hadleigh on the 2.15pm. bus from Boxford arriving back at 2.30pm. Strong shoes, or walking boots should be worn as these paths can be rough and wet in places.

There's been a recent rush of applications to the Rosa Simon Music Fund since the last issue of the HCN, which is great news!

To date, we've supported 12 projects totalling £3,216.52, out of an income received of £14,489.22. These projects usually involve the purchase of high quality instruments for our local schools, playgroups, churches and child minders - plus some tuition fees for talented pupils whose family circumstances make such an outlay problematic. I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to see nursery pupils and Mrs Sheena Broadbent at Hadleigh Community School playing the large African gathering drum purchased through a donation from the Fund. Equally, it was great to see the sheer range of multicultural instruments brought by the Hadleigh Community Preschool from monies supplied by the Fund, not least as that was where Rosa went in the months before she died.

We are now able to confirm that The Rosa Simon Music Workshop and Concert will go ahead on Saturday June 6th at the Hadleigh United Reformed Church and the Ansell Centre. We will be sharing more details in the next edition of the HCN and on social media, but basically we are inviting a number of Year 5 and 6 pupils from the local primary schools and some Year 7 and 8 students from Hadleigh High School to participate. Between 10am and 1pm there will be a fantastic workshop in the church run by professional jazz pianist and composer Pete Letanka, who will help them devise a half hour piece for performance, interspersed with other musical items the schools themselves will have rehearsed beforehand.

After lunch, from 2.15pm the youngsters will come together to finalise the programme in time for a concert at 3pm in the Ansell Centre to which everyone is invited. Tickets will be available beforehand as well as on the door!

Semer Airgun Society Semer Airgun Society ran its annual Golden Pellet competition and are pleased to announce that, after a very close fought evening, where two junior members had a total of 41 points each, they had a shoot off to determine the outright winner. This was between Lucy Maskell and Mia Kirk, and on this occasion Lucy Maskell was the victor. Lucy gets to keep the cup for a year and hopefully will defend it next year. Well done Lucy from all at Semer Airgun Society on winning the Golden Pellet.

Now I am sure that you read things other than my column. Do you ever have “This England”. My mother, Brenda, has a subscription as a present from one of her best friends, Muriel. When I heard that Angel Delights at 85 High Street, Tel. 01473 828191, had won the award for the Finest Tea Shop in England, I had to get in contact with its owner Helen Golland. As you can see, I joined Helen for tea just outside her shop. The tea shop is very popular and that is no surprise. Helen’s scones are fresh, moist and pert and are found in sweet or savoury including cranberry and coconut. There are light lunches and afternoon tea is £5.75 and a more luxurious affair can be enjoyed at £12.50. Fine bone china and tiered cake plates await you. It is all so much nicer than these horrible chains with their tasteless mass produced eats and cups of coffee like buckets. Helen also provides an excellent outside catering service for weddings, funerals and such like but better to try and enjoy these goodies whilst you are still alive.

So many of you want to know more about Frank and Maria. Maria has had a little trouble with her varicose veins. So unsightly, but it comes from all the standing up. Last year, Maria was bent double pulling Frank’s turnips before they became woody. It didn’t do her any good.

Frank drove me in the Number 1 car to Finchley so that I could go to an NSPCC quiz with my dear friend Elizabeth. I seemed to pick up a nasty bug which has been on my chest. Frank waited with the car whilst my mother, my Secretary Janet and I enjoyed that new film “Fifty Shades of Grey”. Everyone winks knowingly at the mere mention of the name, however, it is quite a serious story dealing with a relationship where the gentleman was a “dominator” and all of the paraphernalia that that entailed. It was a public showing. We must have been an amusing sight to the hoards of teenage girls that filled the cinema to bursting point. Why not go and see the film.

My partner Matthew Thompson was involved in a motorcycle incident during the icy weather at the end of January and came off his bike on the road into Kersey. He passed out and things could have been even more serious if they hadn't found him and got in touch with me. I would like to say a huge thank you to the two women who stopped to help him. I never got their names or contact details as we had to rush off to the hospital, but I am so grateful that they stopped. Antique Shop In Boxford Opens Saturday 7th March Helen Miles is opening Country House Antiques a small but perfectly formed antique shop in the middle of the lovely Suffolk village of Boxford. I have been dealing in antiques for a considerable time, buying and selling antique and early 20th century pictures and 19th century decorative items.

I tend to buy what attracts me and enjoy getting up early and travelling, sometimes some distance to find original and desirable pieces to sell. I believe it is so much better to hunt out a one off item that gives you pleasure every time you look at it, rather than buying something mass produced from a high street shop. I will be selling items from £15 - £500 and hope people will be able to find something in my shop for their home, garden or as a gift. Hadleigh Freemasons remember Robert Burns On January 23rd Hadleigh freemasons together with their ladies and personal guests attended the Brett Valley Lodge Burns Supper held at The Town Hall.

This Annual Event proved as popular as ever with 120 people in attendance all enjoying a five course meal with traditional scottish piper and of course ‘The Address to The Haggis’ which was carried out by W.Bro. J. Adams in his usual exuberant style. The evening commenced with a standard short masonic meeting for the brethren of the lodge after which all the guests were invited into the Lodge Room to be greeted by the Worshipful Master and then entertained by W.Bro. E. Maser with a short talk on freemasonry and the work carried out by individual officers within the lodge. A raffle was held during the evening and £475 was raised through the generosity of those present and which will be added to monies already held and will be distributed as is usual to local charities in due course.

Robert Burns was initiated an Entered Apprentice Freemason in Lodge St. David, Tarbolton on 4 July 1781, at the age of 23. His initiation fee was 12s 6d. (This would be the equivalent of £67.00 today) Burns was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft, and raised to the degree of Master Mason on 1st October 1781. The Lodge record book reads as follows: "Robert Burns in Lochlea was passed and raised, Henry Cowan being Master, James Humphrey Snr. Warden, Alexr. Smith Jnr. Warden, Robert Wodrow Secretary and James Manson Treasurer, and John Tannock Taylor and others of the Brethren being present". When Burns moved to Dumfries, he joined Lodge St. Andrew on St. John's Day, 1788, and once again, showed a great enthusiasm for his Lodge.

In 1792, he was elected Senior Warden and served a one-year term. This was the last Masonic office he held before his death in 1796, he was 37 years old.

…but fear not, there is no need to contact Babergh Council, as Dick Whittington came to the rescue at the annual CHAPS (Chamberlin Hall Amateur Player Society) pantomime. Take larger than life characters, add plenty of children, throw in corny jokes, mix in references to local places and people and hey presto, you’ve got the receipe for a perfect panto!

Even with the best ingredients, it’s the performers who make the show and draw the crowds who want to see that special blend of a homegrown cast and funpacked tale. Directed by Lesley Woods, Principal at Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts, ensured a show full of fun, laughter, song and dance and with MLSPA students taking the role of villagers and rockin' rats the show proved to be a visual spectacle with choreographed routines to many foot tapping songs.

The biggest laughs were whipped up

by Adrian Chinery who played Sarah the Cook and gave many a professional panto dame a run for their money with his enthusiastic wit, stylish wigs and outrageous costumes (pictured with Divvy Dave played by David Piggott).

Caroline Gage (owner of Corn Craft In Monks Eleigh) made her CHAPS stage debut and thoroughly enjoyed playing Dick alongside the CHAPS cast including the evil King Rat (Debbie Bailey) and love interest Alice Fitzwarren (Wendy Rodwell).

Also making her debut was Vicki Bolton, a classically trained ballet dancer who was purr-fect in her role as Thomasina The Cat, who moved with cat-like elegance and grace across the stage.

With months of rehearsals and five performances over two weekends, the cast are all looking forward to a well earned rest before beginning rehearsals later in the year for the 2016 Panto! Oh yes they are!

On a final note, both Lesley Woods (Director) and Adrian Chinery (Chairman) would like to thank all the cast mentioned above plus Will Pratt, Michael Biddulph, Jane Fellingham, Janet Mackie, Christine Hubbard, Linda Underwood and all those people behind the scenes for their involvement in CHAPS and for their commitment and hard work. Denise van Outen spends romantic Valentine’s weekend in luxury lodge at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa Actress, singer, TV & radio presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star, Denise Van Outen chose to return to her favourite lodge at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa for her Valentine’s weekend with boyfriend Eddie Boxshall and two close friends. Having loved her stay in the lodges when she played in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Pro Am last October, Denise booked to return for two nights for a packed Valentines itinerary at this renowned award-winning golf and spa resort, situated in beautiful Constable Country on the Suffolk/Essex border.

Arriving Friday evening, the new guest Eastenders actress and friends enjoyed a sumptuous dinner in the hotel’s Two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant with family director Tamara Unwin and husband Stephen. Denise had been interviewed on the red carpet the night before for the Premier of 50 Shades of Grey, but despite 3 hours sleep looked as stunning as ever in an elegant short black dress with sky high heels. After a photoshoot in the lodges on Saturday morning Denise teed off on the Gainsborough course for a relaxed round of golf with her friends. She only took up the game last year and is already looking impressive on the course, showing a natural swing and aptitude.

A fun Rasul Mud Therapy Experience after her golf – one of the most popular treatments in the hotel’s Peake Spa – provided Denise and her singer/songwriter friend Cozi Costi with much hilarity.

On Valentine’s night Denise and friends enjoyed a special romantic champagne candlelit dinner in the Lakes Restaurant.

She was so impressed by the excellent quality of the food that she wanted to thank Executive Head Chef Alan Paton and his talented team personally – and surprised him by walking into the kitchen to order her own dessert and asking him to do a selfie with her. The delighted and startled Chef was very happy to oblige!

After dinner Denise and friends joined hotel family owners Tamara Unwin and Susanna Rendall and their guests in the Devora Suite and quickly got into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme for the hotel’s Valentine’s Ball, dancing the night away to popular live band, Juke Box Fury.

Denise shared several photos of her fun weekend with her 600,000 or so twitter followers, commenting “Best Valentines weekend of golf, dinner and dancing with Cozicosti, Eddieboxshall and Dunc at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa”. Her stay was also featured in the Mail on Sunday the next day. She later said “We literally had the best time. We had a really fun day followed by a lovely meal in the evening. We met some great people and it was everything we wanted it to be. The lodges are amazing and we felt like we had our own space and we could really enjoy the weekend.”

Retired hairdresser Gill Dutton is getting on her bike once again and taking positive action in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. Gill 69, is part of an amazing group of women from all walks of life, of all ages and cycling abilities who will be tackling the fifth WOMENvCANCER challenge, ‘Cycle Africa 2015’. This is Gill’s second challenge as two years ago she cycled Cuba for WvC, raising £3,300.

In October, the group of approximately 100 women, will cycle 350kms from the base of Kilimanjaro to the Ngorangoro Crater - both on and off road experiencing rural Tanzania, away from the tourist trails and hotspots. It will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support as well as a real challenge.

As well as training hard, Gill needs to raise £3000 to support the continued work of Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action, the three biggest killer cancers of women. She is asking local people and businesses to kindly help her achieve her target, and has raised £1,500 so far by putting on small events herself.

Having recently attended a Suffolk Traditional Orchard Group training day on restoration of old orchards, Chris (far right in photo) has undertaken the task of restoring our trees. We have many old apple varieties including Warner’s King, Gascoyne's Scarlet and Beauty of Bath. Many of them are ‘phoenix’ trees, having blown over in high winds such as those in Oct ’87, and then regrown from horizontal trunks. None of the trimmings will be wasted. Smaller pieces are used in deadwood screens, while larger chunks are used in turning, back of benches and other projects such as the recent ‘Access to the Orchard’ which used fruit wood in the balustrade, see photo. The resulting boardwalk will be formally opened on 21st March by Karen Cannard (The Rubbish Diet).

Haunted - Do you dare watch it on Friday 13th?

What would you do if your dinner party had an uninvited guest – a guest who died two hundred years ago and had chosen this night to unleash hell? What if you tried to escape but discovered the house would not let you leave?

That is the horror let loose on Mark and wife Kate, who thought they had bought their dream cottage, and their friends Bill and Louise who arrive to celebrate Mark’s birthday and instead find themselves in a battle for survival against an unspeakable evil, and a struggle to help free a lost soul. As the tale unfolds in the style of such terrifying classics as The Woman in Black and Turn of the Screw, be prepared for shock upon shock, to be chilled to the bone, and to witness a violent end to a story that starts with a birthday celebration and finishes with a scene of horror bathed in blood. Haunted, written by Michael Munn and presented by Boxford Drama Group, is designed to shock and scare, and is not for the squeamish or faint-hearted and is not suitable for children.

Perhaps it has something to do with just having seen the most amazing version of Hansel and Gretel at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester that gave me a penchant for gingerbread. And I know it tends to be seasonal, but why wait a whole year for one of the most aromatic spices to come around again?

So here is a lovely little recipe for

by Sarah Thompson gingerbread biscuits. They can be cut into any shape, and would make a delightful addition to afternoon tea. Or why not cut them into egg shapes and share as an alternative to chocolate Easter eggs? Great fun for decorating with icing and sprinkles of your choice.

Gingerbread Biscuits Ingredients: 110g/4oz unsalted butter, 110/4oz light muscovado sugar 4 tbsps golden syrup, 325g/11oz plain flour 1tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsps ground ginger Method Preheat the oven to 170 C/325 F/Gas Mark 3, Line or grease a large baking tray. Sieve the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup until dissolved. Add this to the flour mixture to form a dough.

Roll dough on a floured surface to approx.. ½ cm. Press out shapes with cutters of choice. Place shapes on the pre-prepared baking tray and bake in the centre of the oven for 8-10 mins. (depending on the type of oven – check after 8 mins). Add icing and/or decorations of choice, or just enjoy with a nice cup of tea.

Jane Basham asks “When do we give up on our children?”

Hadleigh and Glemsford will see their Children's Centres shut down at the end of March. One refurbished, the other purpose-built for children, fully funded by Labour and only opened in 2008 and 2010, they were part of Sure Start. The idea behind Sure Start was to bring together, under one roof, early help, guidance and protection for children and families. Services free for all at the point of need. Breaking down barriers and providing discreet and targeted support for those with problems. Prevention would give a better start wherever needed. It would also be cheaper longer term – in personal and human costs, but also for public services. It made sense, was needed and it worked. But Sure Start Children's Centres are also an easy target for short-term cuts in Suffolk.

I’ve met parents and carers who won’t go to re-located centres. No one's yet told the expectant mums at Glemsford where their future ante natal checks will happen. One thinks she’ll have to go to Sudbury, but doesn’t drive. Another mum, keen to attend a confidence-building programme having fled a violent ex-partner, won’t get there if it’s not held within walking distance. The idea of asking directions at reception in a leisure centre for such a deeply personal course fills her with horror. "Where will we have our family counselling now?" asked another. I don’t know - and nor does the Council. The disruption caused doesn't count with those councillors who voted to close them. They're busy piling up the obstacles blocking children and families from services they value and need; services that, indirectly, benefit all of us in the long run.

Many parents knew from the outset that the closure plans were a done deal and the public consultation a very slanted sham. Subsequent events have proved them right. So why bother to protest and petition, complain and campaign?

There's a simple answer. Sometimes, it's impossible not to. Despite the pressures we face to obey authority, to defer to the powerful and accept what is, we have choices. We can play ball, go along with the obvious charades, and take whatever's given. That can feel easier. But sometimes, because we live in a democracy, we can say 'No!'. We can take sides, suggest alternatives, call for change and look authority in the eye.

For me, decisions on services affecting the future of our children will remain one of those times. There will be another one in May this year.

Carl Giles long cartoon-drawing career covered almost the whole second half of the last century. He touched upon just about every aspect of life in our country. A large number of his cartoons were based on Ipswich and the surrounding aeas of Suffolk where he lived and worked for much of his career.

John Field compiles the annual Giles Cartoon Collection for Express Newspapers and his talk will focus the way in which Giles used local scenes as a basis for his cartoons.

We are pleased to announce the first of our Spring craft fairs will be at Hadleigh Town Hall on the 21st March 2015. The fair will run from 10am – 4pm and entry as always is free. We have a fantastic line-up of crafters exhibiting this Spring spread over two floors of the Town Hall. Event organiser Kylie Sparkes says “I'm really looking forward to this event, it seems like it has been a long time since our last event at the end of 2014. We are eager and full of enthusiam for the new years events and Hadleigh is a favorite venue of 'Simply events' as it is always well attended and appreciated by our visitors.�

Amongst our makers for this event is 'Wax Art', they will be giving demonstrations of their craft throughout the day, this should be a real treat to watch. We also have jewellery by 'Cogs and Gems', 'Lisa Jane Jewellery', 'Matchit Jewellery' and 'Ghislaine Brace-Clemens'. 'Snuggest Slippers' will be exhibiting their handmade slippers, we have art from 'Elkie Wild Art' and ceramics from 'Sandra Hall', 'Scorchwood' will be demonstrating their Pyrography on wood and we have textiles and homewares from 'Cushions Plus', 'Barbara's Crafts', 'Gwen Callow-Jones' and 'Truly dotty'. We have two photographers at the event 'Lisa Cockrell Photography' and 'David J Brown Photography', we also have handmade cards, hand poured candles and knitting and crochet for you to browse. Once you have finished browsing the stalls pop downstairs to our tearoom and sample our homemade cakes and savouries along with a cup of tea or coffee.

We have two more dates booked for Hadleigh this year, the Autumn craft fair on the 3rd October 2015 and the Christmas craft fair on the 5th December 2015, we also have events at Sudbury, Lawford near Manningtree, Nayland and Lavenham. Award-winning local businesswoman, Karen Finch is bucking the current business trend by expanding her business and opening a brand new centre in Sudbury. Karen who owns The Hearing Care Centre and has 20 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, is opening the new private hearing care facility at the Sudbury Community Health Centre in March. Karen set up her independent hearing care practice in 1998 and opened her first centre in Ipswich, the following year. In what she describes as a seventeenyear rollercoaster ride, she has gone from having one secretary to help her with the admin to managing a team of 17 including six other registered hearing aid dispensers.

One in six people in the UK suffer from hearing loss and Karen believes that the number of people who have hearing loss will only rise as noise pollution increases and people live longer. "This will more than likely become one of the biggest health issues of modern times".

Karen continued, "Millions of people who could benefit from wearing a hearing aid are reluctant to do so. People who take action, have a hearing test and go on to improve their lives with the use of hearing aids, not only benefit themselves, but also their family, friends and colleagues.”

Karen was kindly invited by the team at the Health Centre to open the new facility. “They have made us feel so welcome. We could not wish to work in a friendlier centre than this”.

“Our whole business is built around offering our patients the very best hearing care service, whilst providing it to them locally so they don’t have to travel far.

By opening here in Sudbury this will help improve this.”

The new hearing centre in Sudbury will be officially opened on 13th March 2015 and the celebrations will continue with The Hearing Care Centre offering free appointments for hearing tests and professional advice (saving customers £20) until the end of April.

A Perfect Pre-Prom Day Organised by the Year 11 leadership team, the prom is causing much excitement among the year as the day quickly approaches. For many girls (and boys) this is the highlight of their year. The pre-prom evening is the perfect chance for girls to find stylists to do their hair, nails and make up.

There will also be opportunities to sample dresses, shoes and accessories to make it a night to remember. Tickets will be on sale for between £2-£3. It is aimed at Years 10 and 11 who have got proms coming up.

Heart Foundation Over the years we have encouraged our pupils to take a greater degree of Leadership and responsibility in deciding which charitable causes they wish to support. We feel that it is vital that pupils are able to prepare themselves for adult life by considering the needs of others and taking a collective responsibility for supporting causes which can improve the life chances of others. Our pupils regularly wish to raise funds for a variety of charities some local, some national and some international. Recently, they decided to support the British Heart Foundation’s initiative to support research into coronary heart disease by wearing something red. Some pupils and staff came completely in red whilst others wore only a hint of red on Friday 6th February.

With coronary heart disease being the UK’s single biggest killer which affects all ages, our pupils felt this event was an important cause. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has, for over 50 years, pioneered research that has transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions and their work has been central to the discoveries of vital treatments that are changing the fight against heart disease.

With so many staff and pupils supporting the day, we look forward to hearing how much we have managed to raise.

Basketball In February, the under 13 girls’ basketball team went up against five different teams in the South Suffolk competition. We are delighted to report that they came second. We interviewed Mr Cook, Subject Leader for PE, who said ‘the team worked together very well and showed lots of effort and consideration in the way they played’. Congratulations to the Hadleigh High team on their triumph.

Guardian Angels at Hadleigh High During the last week of the half term, teachers around Hadleigh High were becoming Guardian Angles for the week, by secretly handing out gifts anonymously to one another. The gifts could be anything from joke letters to buying small gifts. We spoke to the teacher running the project and she told us, “It is not about how much you spend, but the thought that goes into the gifts.” We then interviewed more teachers to collect their views on the project and they told us that “it was just as much fun giving the gifts as receiving them”!

Sports Stars of the Month Year 10 student, Connie Powell, has had a successful trial for London and South England rugby squad. She is also pushing for a spot in the England under 15’s squad. Another sporting success this half-term has been Rowan Bennett and Alex Baxter being selected to run for Suffolk. As a result of their fine performances in the three selection events held at Royal Hospital School, Leiston and Culford. Rowan (year 7) and Alex (year 10) were selected represent Suffolk in the Anglian Championships held at RHS on the 7th February.

Sports Fixtures and Results Our hockey teams are doing a fantastic job this half term, with many fixtures being played by all year groups. The year 7 team have performed outstandingly well as well as the Year 10 and Year 11 team.

Year 5/6 Basketball Pyramid Tournament Nine teams from eight schools in the Hadleigh Schools Pyramid competed in the Year 5/6 Basketball tournament. The event took place on the 4th February and ran very smoothly with the help of the Year 9 Sports Prefects.

The Competition was organised by Mr Fahy, PE Teacher. The eventual winners were Hadleigh CP 1st place and in 2nd place was Whatfield. Both of these teams will be advancing to the next stage of the competition.

Raising the House Flag The junior house prefects challenged each house to create a flag to be made and used at house events. Pupils from all years are working together to create a winning design. When they’re finished they will be printed as proper flags to be used to support the house competitions. Miss Calvino, the head of Pupil leadership, who is coordinating it with the House prefects said, “The Designs are coming along very nicely”. They look very impressive so far and we look forward to seeing the finished results. Good luck to all the artists representing each house.

Recently, Year 10s have been holding a battle of the breakfasts between “Morning munch” and “Bare breakfast”. Both teams are selling various breakfast items such as muffins, fruit, cereal and much more. This is all in aid of raising money for the school and building up business skills for the young people involved. Both teams were given £25 to spend on whatever food they wish. “Bare Breakfast’s” approach to spending was to buy a wide selection food of which they told us would bring more people because different people like different things. On the other hand, “Morning munch” had a different approach with buying a smaller selection. They told us this would mean they could buy a larger quantity of the food they wanted.

Bildeston History Quarterly: Issue 14 (Spring 2015) No. 108 High Street, now a bicycle showroom called Lifecycles, will be remembered by many residents as the Co-op. In 1919, the old timber-framed building on the site was purchased by Ipswich Industrial Co-operative Society Limited and was soon demolished and a modern grocery and drapery store was opened on the site. The manager William Gee and his staff can be seen proudly standing outside the old building and later its replacement on the magazine’s front and back covers. Peter Hubbard of Bath continues his recollections of Bildeston during the 1930’s by looking at the southern part of High Street, which in those days was still called Hadleigh Street by some residents. Among workshops and shopkeepers, Peter recalls Bantock’s forge, Percy Finter’s photographic studio, Hill’s grocery-cum-everything-else store and Mrs Garrod, who delivered milk on her bicycle. Photographs show this part of High Street at various times in the early years of the 20th century including Minto House, when it was a cycle agency, and also the cottages next the Red Lion, which were demolished to make way for Newberry Road in the 1960’s. Brace Brooks of Bildeston has contributed ‘Great War heroes remembered’ about two uncles Alfred Welham and Harry Welham, both of whom died in 1916. From letters to their mother, family photographs and other records, Grace tells the story of two Bildeston men who are now commemorated on our village war memorial.

A small room tacked on to the east wall of the north aisle of Bildeston parish church has been used as a store but that was not the intended use when it was built in the mid-17th century after a disagreement between the lord of the manor, who was patron of the living, and the bishop of Norwich. In ‘Building the church vestry’, the reason behind the need to erect such a place is investigated, the dispute between patron and bishop having been eventually resolved by Parliament. ‘Tales from out neighbours’ features an article by David Turner of Hitcham who relates the efforts of Revd John Henlsow, rector of Hitcham 1837-1861, to extend the horizons of his parishioners by arranging railway excursions to places of interest. However, his only effort to organise a visit for people to Hitcham, although a great success and enjoyed by all who took part, did not turn out exactly as Henslow had anticipated.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Another promising rider, introduced by Anne her Instructor. “Chloe is aged 7 (going on 17!) I think it would be fair to say that Chloe was one of our more reluctant riders. Her favourite word for her first few visits was “No”! A strong willed little girl, it took a little cajoling and encouragement and a final lift to get her on the pony. As expected she has never looked back. Chloe is now, after just over a year, one of our more confident riders sporting some of the coolest pink riding gear. Sitting beautifully on her pony, with great posture and balance she is a ‘natural’. She is riding off the lead rope for part of her ride and confidently and safely controlling her pony. She competed in the Shelley Show coming a commendable 2nd in her dressage test despite being understandably very nervous. Chloe is working towards her ASDAN award with help from her school. We enjoy Chloe’s positive attitude to riding and are sure she will become an excellent rider.” Well done Chloe - pictured here doing exercises whilst riding Holly.

Stretching is vital for muscle health. HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

They have trekked trails in the Arctic & New Zealand, the Indian sub-continent & South America, Scotland’s west coast and the Yorkshire peaks. This September they will spend 5 days on the Great Wall of China, but this time they intend to combine the trek with fund raising in aid of the charity Breast Cancer Care. BCC is dedicated to helping people with breast cancer, giving them support, information and advice each step of the way. Without this help, sufferers often feel alone and lost, which makes the journey more miserable and recovery more difficult.

Sue and Tony know just how important BCC’s work is because a number of their family members and friends have had the disease and so, to ensure every penny raised goes to BCC, they are paying the travelling and accommodation costs themselves. Tony and Sue plan to raise £6,000. To do this, they are organising two fund raising events: 7th March - Jurassic Rock will be presenting Sounds of the Sixties in Clare Town Hall. This is the story of the music revolution of the 1960s starting with its roots and ending with its legacy. Hadleigh and District Garden Club A great evening was enjoyed by Hadleigh and District Garden Club on Monday 9th of February when Matt Tanton-Brown gave us a full-on talk, demonstration and explanation of all types of propagation from seeds, bulbs and corms, cuttings, grafting, budding and division. One of the world's communicators Matt kept up a non-stop dialogue on all aspects of the craft in a highly amusing, interesting and instructive way: at the same time, knowing our local conditions, was able to advise in such a way that we could all work out why things can and do sometimes fail, as well as the best way to avoid the problems of botrytis, damping- off etc. A really worthwhile evening.

Our next meeting on Monday March 9th is our AGM, please come and maybe bring some ideas for future meetings.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts My main thought at the moment is that in mid February we have had a magnificent week for getting the Spring garden jobs done in a garden carpeted

by Crocuses. A succession of mild days meant that the ground temperature at present is an unexpected 9 Cel, and everything is starting to grow beautifully. The trouble is that by the time you are reading this we could be back to Winter.This year's brassica plot has been limed. (Late I know. It should have been done in the Autumn but now is better than just before planting.)

Some of the hedges, the blackberry and the loganberry have been pruned and the pruning disposed of. If someone is only going to grow one soft fruit I would recommend a blackberry. A good thornless variety trained along a fence can yield 9 to 12lb of fruit per year, and requires very little attention apart from cutting out the old stems and tying in the new in February/March.

The day I sat down to write this garden pests were in the news. The RHS analyse the number of enquiries that they get on various pests in a year and publish it as a top ten league table. The results for 2013 contained a lot of the problems which I see. The leading positions were held by Slugs/Snails and Vine Weavils. Also in the table from the previous year but in different positions were Cushion Scale, Ants, Glasshouse Mealy Bugs, and Lily Beetle. Pests in the 2013 list but not in the 2012 list were Capsid Bugs, Mice/Voles, Glasshouse Red Spider and Plum Moth. Last year I saw all of them except the Mice/Voles.

On the same day they drew attention to the Allium Leaf Miner which joined us a few years ago from Europe and is now spreading. Leaf Miners are always difficult to kill because the grubs are inside the plant and therefore out of reach of insecticides or fingers. The 3mm long fly has two generations per year and lays its eggs in March/April and October/November. There is no chemical control, so if you want to guard against it, then rotate your crops and cover them with fleece at the danger times. This is going to be difficult for leeks in October/November.

Weather Records In January at Kersey there was 62 mm (2.4”) of rain, which is about 20% above average for the month. The 3 monthly total at the end of January was 197.5 mm (7.8”) which is nearly 30% more than the average figure. In January the maximum temperature was 11 Cel (52F) and the minimum temperature was -4 Cel (25F) which are both about average.

In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 9 Cel (48F). Mid February ground temperature seems to be quite variable, and is usually in the range 3 to 5 Cel So this is quite unusual.

Hints March is the month when one really must make some time for the garden because :(a) Winter pruning of hedges, roses and fruit trees needs to be completed. Do not prune plum trees at this time because it can cause the silver leaf fungus disease. (b) It is the right time to sow a lot of flower and vegetable seeds. Even if you do not want the work of sowing seeds in pots and pricking out, you can get a good show of colour by sowing hardy annuals direct where you want the plants about the third week of March. Suitable types are Annual Chrysanthemum, Calendula, Clarkia, Eschscholzia, Godetia, Larkspur, and Linaria. Most vegetables can be sown, but check the packets. (c) The weeds will be growing well, and should not be allowed to seed. (d) The lawn will be growing again. Ideally give it a first light cut when it is about 3 inches long. It is also a good time to give it a feed. (e) Garden paths may well need a good clean to make them less slippery.

I had lots of cuddles when we visited the lovely people at Suffolk Life Pensions recently. SESAW was one of three charities supported by the company last year.

As a result, Mum and Marian were presented with a cheque for £4109, a wonderful donation, while I received much attention from the staff. The fundraisers enjoyed the occasion too because, as you probably know, animals are excellent stress busters. Many universities, including University Campus Suffolk, arrange animal petting sessions to help students chill out whilst studying. If you are looking for a pet to share your life, come and see the animals waiting for you at SESAW. Now the weather is better, new volunteers are busy with outside maintenance, but we still need more people for animal care and fundraising. Are Suffolk’s cultural attractions sufficiently well known outside the county? A new three year project, managed by the County Council, was recently launched which aims to raise the county’s cultural profile.

I have been involved as a volunteer at Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury for over ten years and am therefore very aware of Suffolk’s rich artistic heritage. All of us recognise the famous Suffolk artists, Gainsborough, Constable and Munnings, and their legacy continues today. Suffolk’s own Maggie Hambling, who was born in Sudbury, is currently packing them in at her latest show, Walls of Water, at London’s National Gallery. Artistic endeavour in Suffolk goes well beyond this however. Over 3400 artists, past and present, are listed on the Suffolk Artists’ website. I understand that in Lavenham alone in 2014 the Lavenham Art Society had over 70 members. Suffolk’s musical connections are significant too. We have, to mention a few, one of the UK’s best Chamber Music Societies in Ipswich, many excellent choral societies, the Suffolk Villages Festival of ancient music, Benjamin Britten’s Snape Maltings, Bildeston’s BNatural Music Festival, and the stunning acoustics of the new Apex in Bury St Edmunds.

Seeking to raise the profile of Suffolk as a cultural destination, Suffolk County Council, on behalf of the New Anglia LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) Cultural Board, recently announced that it will be managing a three year programme to promote ‘cultural tourism’ in both Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Southwold based communications agency Spring has been appointed to deliver this project, which will promote the rich cultural offering of both counties with the aim of attracting more visitors to the area.

The Cultural Tourism project is financially supported by £150,000 from the Arts Council and £100,000 from the LEP. The LEP’s Cultural Board comprises senior figures from culture, heritage and tourism from both counties.

Tourism is currently worth £1.8bn to Suffolk, and it supports 34,000 jobs of which 17,000 or so are full time. This is 11.3% of the workforce. If we can persuade more people to come and sample some of our cultural delights, further growth will be good not just for the arts in the county, but also for local businesses, jobs, and the county’s economy.

Hadleigh Bowling Club Hadleigh Bowling Club kick start their outdoor bowling season with a Coffee Morning on Saturday 21st March. This is an ideal opportunity for prospective members to come along and see the facilities our club has to offer . It is also a chance for existing members to get together after the winter lay off. Kersey Mill Newsletter Work has moved inside away from the wheel house and the cold of winter and is now firmly fixed on repairs to the Pitwheel.

The Pitwheel is attached by a shaft to the water wheel and as the water wheel turns so does the pit-wheel producing the power and drive for the internal workings of the mill.

We have recently discovered that the Pitwheel in its entirety will need recogging, we had hoped that some of Picture of Pitwheel mortise the existing teeth would go-again before being cleaned however they now appear to be far worse than we had initially thought so it is a complete repair that is required.

We have recently cleaned the years of dirt, remains of the some old teeth and rust away from the rim of the wheel and coated with a layer of paint that can be easily removed on completion of the repairs, this is needed as fine measurements and markings are required to enable the new tooth blank to be fitted within the existing cast-iron mortise.

When the rim was produced back in the early 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it was not as a precise science as would be today with say a Ferrari engine, so when it comes to the fitting of the wooded teeth any adjustments that are required due to errors within the moulding of the rim could and would be corrected at this stage.

The two halves of the 10ft.6 Pitwheel appear to have been cast very accurately. In a mortise wheel the mortises are made by the use of cores.

Although great effort is made to space these cores accurately they can move a little under pressure of molten cast iron. Any inaccuracies can be corrected by offsetting the cog on its shank.

Incredibly the rim seems to be in very good order, it is only the wooden parts that have deteriorated over the past 200 years, we need to replace and repair a few wooden spokes along with all the 112 teeth.

We recently took delivery of the oak that we require for the task in hand, the oak for the teeth has now been measured and cut into blocks as seen in the photograph, it now needs to be stored within a warm cupboard or two as to prevent the wood from taking on moisture and swelling as this can only be allowed to happen once the tooth is fitted. The teeth need to be very dry when fitted to the wheel It then is allowed to swell with moisture making for a very tight fit within the mortise.

Restoring the old mill built in the early 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is a huge task involving skills now almost forgotten, and one of these is fitting new wooden teeth to the great gear wheel. Now the technical part begins but more on this part of the task next month.

Hadleigh Hares were the hosts for the final cross country race of the season around the fields of Holbecks Farm. The junior race was first and Hadleigh’s course was without a doubt the longest, toughest and coldest of the season, with the snow starting to drive in just as the race set off.

Congratulations to the seven tough kids who all managed to make it to the finish line. Our juniors were: Ella Bodsworth, Thomas and Lucy Holdaway, Oliver Cross, Noah Jamieson, Freddie Ashmore & Elizabeth Stewart. The junior Hares finished in an excellent 9th position in the final standings. The snow eased off for the Seniors so they had it much easier but the 5 mile course which takes in two assents of Constitution Hill was still one of the more challenging races in the series.

One of the most read golf club web sites in the country is run

by Sudbury’s Newton Green Golf Club. The number of club sites in England is into four figures, and one of the leading providers is Club-noticeboard.

The golf information firm’s customers run into three figures, and it has confirmed Newton’s site attracts the most traffic.

One of the latest features on the site shows an unusual interpretation of golf ball hunting by club member and artist Neil Jacobs. Regular updating and the Sudbury club’s reputation for innovation has made it a popular clicking place for golf followers.

Readers have doubled in five years, during which time Newton has been in transformation. It was one of the first in the country to adopt recruitment and retention report guidelines set out by the sport’s governing body in 2009.
