New Event for Suffolk Museum of the Year The Museum of East Anglian Life, crowned Suffolk’s Museum of the Year in 2015, has teamed up with local historical event specialists ‘Black Knight Historical’ to deliver what promises to be the best all round historical event of the Summer with the ‘East Anglian Living History Fayre’ due to be held over the weekend of 13th & 14th August 2016. See the Museum’s 75 acre site brought alive with historical crafts demonstrated across the site, visitors will see working blacksmiths, wheelwrights, a printing press in action, coracle making, hurdle making and charcoal burning to name a few. During this special summer weekend visitors will get to experience the magic of Steam Traction Engines in steam and vintage ploughing demonstrations. Take a look at an Edwardian Dinner party, and discover more about Victorian daily life. With Animals, Arena events, Storytelling, Military vehicles and a Historical shopping market, to name just some of the fantastic attractions planned*, there will be lots for families to enjoy as they leap into the past. Ian Pycroft, owner of Black Knight said "This amazing event really will bring history alive! Visitors will be able to step back in time to meet ancestors all over the Museum. The Women’s Land Army will be working the farm- as they did during World War 2, Ladies from the Women’s Institute will be knitting for the war effort, and the Home Guard will protect us all from German invasion! All across the site, historical characters will delight and amaze you with their skills and knowledge. From Roman Legionaries to an audience with Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare through to Viking Warriors, Falconry, Music & Dance, Gunpowder weapons demonstrations, Lectures from top local authors and speakers, and much more!" This special new event promises to be an unforgettable experience. For information and enquiries contact the Museum on enquiries@eastanglianlife.org.uk or telephone 01449 612229

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers February’s walk around Sudbury attracted 13 hardy souls despite a rather murky day. I’m sure we’re all looking forward to more spring like weather when we can put away wet weather gear for a bit. Our March walk on Saturday 12th will start and end in Hadleigh. We will leave St Mary’s School on Stonehouse road at 0930 and take in the Railway Walk, Binny’s wood, White Ladies, Ramsey Wood, Cobbold Farm, Durrants Farm and enter Hadleigh along George Street. Although the walk is 10 miles long, the going is very flat and pleasant. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as, being winter, the ground can be wet, muddy and rough in places. We have now established the group’s web site and it will be further developed over the coming months. At present we have included further details of current and future walks, updates on our activities and also information on any footpath problems that we are aware of. Take a look at www.hadleighwalkers.com and any comments are welcome. Route maps can be requested from the web site. We are aware that some walkers may not wish to complete the entire walk and therefore the maps could be useful if arranging a mid route pick up. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

Rosa’s Fund: calling all 7 - 15 year olds! On Saturday June 11th 2016 we are offering children aged 7 – 15 in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages the opportunity of another workshop with Pete Letanka, followed by a concert. Those who attended last year's concert will recall the incredible skill and joy shown by the children who were performing many pieces they had only just learnt in the earlier workshop. Pete Letanka is a renowned musician, pianist and composer who has worked with many schools to create original performance pieces. He brings the best out of children! We can do this because of the amazing generosity of the people in the area who have donated more than £18,000 to remember Rosa Simon. The workshop runs from 10am in the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh and a Sharing concert takes place at 3.30pm the same day. We have written to all the local primary schools and Hadleigh High School asking them to encourage their children to sign-up, but you can also do so by contacting me at: kharmanasms@btinternet.com. The session will be well supervised by a retired headteacher and other adults. There is no charge for either the workshop or the tickets for the concert, but a collection for the Fund will be taken at the end of the latter. We look forward to a wonderful day of music making!

Whatfield Players – Pianist Wanted! The Whatfield Players are planning a new production for the 28th and 29th October 2016 - ‘The Feel-good Show’. This will be a varied programme of songs, musical numbers and short sketches. They are very keen to find a pianist who would be able to act as accompanist for the musical numbers. If there is anyone out there who would be like to be involved in this capacity the Players would love to hear from them. For more information please contact Diane Armour, on 01473 822000

Our contact details:

The Disability Forum for Suffolk has been relaunched to address the findings of the 2015 Suffolk Disability Focus event which included; “that 82% of those attending felt that disabled people did not have sufficient opportunities to make their voices heard in Suffolk” and that attendees felt “there continues to be many barriers to the inclusion of disabled people within our communities”. In 2010, following an open meeting of the then Disability Forum for Suffolk, the Forum transformed itself into the Suffolk Consortium of User Led Organisations. This initiative was designed to meet government requirements for user led organisations. However, it is difficult for many disability organisations to meet the strict criteria of user led organisations and the name has proved somewhat complex. Removing these barriers should allow for a more inclusive and representative membership. There currently exists across Suffolk a number of local disability forums. One of the primary aims of the relaunch is to develop stronger relationships between the local disability forums and provide an opportunity for their voices to be combined. All Forums would thus be strengthened and the voice of disabled people in Suffolk would be louder and less easily overlooked. The Disability Forum for Suffolk will work on county issues, identified by the local forums. Therefore, a county forum will: • Seek to represent all disabled people in Suffolk, be a point of access to raise issues and provide unity and strength in numbers • Work closely with local Disability Forums to provide a collective voice • Be a consultative body and advise on disability issues Membership of the Disability Forum for Suffolk remains free and there are no joining restrictions. Disability organisations providing services to disabled people in Suffolk, disabled people and family carers can all join. Further information can be obtained from: Linda Hoggarth, Chair, Disability Forum for Suffolk linda.hoggarth@avenuesgroup.org.uk 01473 464690

Whatfield School held our traditional twilight walk in February, and villagers were pleased to see our fantastic luminous jackets which ensured we were a bright sight at night! Class 1 prepared some delicious soup for all the walkers to enjoy, chopping and preparing vegetables to make a hot treat for the evening. The twilight walk has become an annual event at Whatfield, where children and families enjoy a stroll around the beautiful countryside, look at the stars and enjoy toasting marshmallows over an open fire. We enjoyed the fire and just had to sing some campfire songs to round off the evening, thanks to Miss Jennings and her amazing ukele! Whilst I wouldn’t want anyone to think that all we do at Whatfield is cook and eat, Food is a very important part of the sort of practical and creative work we do. Even birthday cakes become part of the practical Maths sessions we all enjoy, so cup-cakes to celebrate Mrs Plumb’s birthday were an important part of the Maths lesson in Class One. RE in class Three was based around Lent, and the story behind Shrove Tuesday gave pupils the excuse to make pancakes in our Food Technology area. As we are in collaboration we often find reasons to get together with our sister school, Bildeston, but it is always fun to host events for our pyramid of schools whenever possible. Schools in the Hadleigh pyramid all take turns to provide enrichment events for children with especial talents or interests. With our lovely village hall, we were in a good position to organise a Dance activity for pupils to take part in, and several children from each of the pyramid schools enjoyed this practical event lead by Northern Ballet, which gave them a taste of high quality Dance input. We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to over the next term, and as always if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are very welcome. Please telephone 01473 823309 to make an arrangement. Lynne Golding, Headteacher

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Kersey is under threat Hello my dear Readers – I have to start this month with grave matters. The ancient village of Kersey is under threat. The picture shows me in the delightful High Street that falls down to the water splash and then rises to the Church of St Mary that has gazed over the rolling countryside for nearly a thousand years. A Planning Application has been made to squash six two storey houses and twelve parking spaces immediately behind a run of six Listed cottages and at the heart of the Conservation Area. The cottage residents would look out of their homes onto a concrete jungle pressed up against their back windows. If this went through it would be a travesty for the village. We are raping and pillaging the Suffolk Countryside and its little old villages for nothing more than a quick profit. Babergh District Council has just given the green light for almost a small town near the Holiday Inn at the start of the A1071 – isn’t that enough. Do send any objections to Peter Beer Chairman of Babergh Planning Committee E: peter.beer@babergh.gov.uk. I gather that the application will be before the Planning Committee at Babergh on Wednesday, 23 March 2016. Do write straight away. If you want to offer help to Kersey contact: E: kersey.conservresidents@gmail.com. As I think of Kersey my mind turns to Walmington on Sea, the home of Dad’s Army. I do love the old series and went to see the new film with relish. It was somewhat corny but amusing nonetheless. How the world has changed. Frank’s friend Ophelia Balls wrote to express concern about Frank’s aubergines; she was worried that they had been put out too early and could wither in the frost. One reader was most surprised that Frank had to eat his supper in the Public Bar when my mother and I called at a Dining Room for dinner. Honestly, whatever next, soon one will be expected to rub shoulders with Frank in the chauffeur’s compartment. By the way, the family’s Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Long Wheel base motor car with division (garnet in colour) has sadly been put up for sale. I quite understand that you may not have your own chauffeur but it is more than suitable for an owner-driver too. I know that many classic car buffs follow my column and do let me know if anyone is interested. We are fortunate that the New Year has been as busy as ever. You may in the Spring be looking to purchase another property or sell something – as you know, you have experience in abundance here and so give us a call. So many of you appreciate the importance of a Lasting Power of Attorney. It would make life so much easier for your family should mental capacity be lost. Do contact us to discuss matters. For those who prefer a team challenge, you could also form a relay squad to tackle the 1.5k and 5k distances with your waterloving friends and lap up the glory. Kelly Blackburn, Operation’s Manager at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure added: “The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Swimathon is a fantastic way to bring our community together, while providing ample opportunity to get fit and healthy in the pool. Hadleigh residents can take the plunge themselves, along with family and friends to complete a swimming challenge of their choice, be it 1.5k or 5k, all while raising funds for those in need.” Swimathon President and Olympic gold-medallist Duncan Goodhew said, “I love Swimathon because it gives people a goal to train for, an extra reason to get in the pool and above all else it helps to raise money for a truly fantastic cause.” Enter Swimathon today at Swimathon.org

There are, so the saying goes, only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes. While it’s understandable that people are reluctant to talk about the former, not doing so means we can’t plan for the ultimate eventuality. And our innate reluctance to tackle the subject is leaving families significantly under-prepared for the impact – both financial and otherwise – of death. In one stark example featured in a report released by Aviva, more than one in four parents have an organ donor card – but only one in seven have a formal, written plan detailing who will take care of their children should anything happen to them. The report also revealed: • More than half of those questioned felt they should have a Will but hadn’t got round to arranging one • 58% had not yet made a list of financial arrangements and providers to help their family sort out their affairs after their death

You don’t have to go to extremes to protect your family. Our solicitors can help you make a Will.

• Some 62% of adults whose parents were still alive said they hadn’t had any conversations together about their wishes in the event of their death. We might not like the idea but the reality is that it is never too early to be thinking of making a Will. By doing so you are ensuring that your assets and estate go to the people you wish them to. Put simply, planning for the future is not complete without a Will. Once you recognise that making these plans are an unavoidable part of life planning, it becomes less of an emotional task and more of a practical exercise. One of our team of local solicitors can help you make a Will. Having knocked on so many of South Suffolk’s front doors during the election, one of the issues that was consistently raised was poor mobile phone signal. Yes, better broadband is a big part of improving local connectivity, and I remain committed to that. However, there is one distinct reason to focus in particular on mobile coverage: for some it can be a matter of life or death. I recently launched a constituency-wide petition for better mobile coverage in South Suffolk. One of the first to sign was a lady who explained to me how she had been unable to call an ambulance when her husband had a fall, due to the lack of any signal. If you have a little bit of coverage, you can usually dial 999; in a ‘not spot’ where you are away from your landline, you cannot call anybody. I have had pleas from first responders in a number of parishes to push for better signal, given the implications for emergency calls. I have even had grave diggers complaining to me of their fears of being busy in the churchyard only to find themselves unable to ring for help if they are injured. What can my petition achieve? It is part of a campaign I am running in conjunction with other MPs to pressure the Government to announce a new round of funding for the Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP). The last round had mixed results with much of the money returned to the Treasury because of local problems with specific sites. I would emphasise that even if we are successful in obtaining new funding, it goes without saying that new masts would have to be appropriately sited. The standard planning process would apply. Signing this petition is to support the principle of better signal, subject to planning. To sign the petition, visit jamescartlidge.com or contact your Parish, Town or District Councillors who have copies. The deadline for submissions is 4th March as I will present the petition to Government early in March in advance of the Budget. I am grateful if you are able to support me.

In Badgers class (yrs 3 and 4) we have been busy learning all about the Ancient Egyptians, creating artwork and writing our very own myths based on Ancient Egyptian myths and legends. We are continuing with this topic after half-term. We have been working hard on mastering Fractions and as a class we have started to learn the Ukelele and rehearse for our Easter performance - which will take place at the end of this coming half-term. Hedgehogs (yrs 1 and 2) Earlier this month we had a great day with Premier Sports! We found out how fit we are, learnt about healthy eating and played lots of games to keep us active! In maths we have been learning about units of measurement. We learnt that weight is measured in grams and kilograms. We had to used the scales to weigh out the correct ingredients to make flapjacks. Squirrels (yr R) It has been a busy term with our learning focussed around traditional stories. The children made houses from straw, sticks and bricks and then pretended to be the big bad wolf (a hairdryer) to try and blow them down. This week we read the 'Emperors New Clothes' and invited in parents to work with their child to design and make a new t shirt using fabric dye, fabric pens and sewing. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh Well so far El Nino has not come over from New York as predicted earlier by the Long Range Weather Centre but Hurricane Hazel is currently blowing herself out on us instead. We have to thank David Blowers for helping with a delivery of coal to a needy client. However the great effort was from two District Councillors, Mark Newman and Kathryn Grandon who stepped in and saw that two desperate couples were rescued from a more serious possibility. Whilst we were not directly involved we were able to supply the much needed fuel. Lessons were learnt by all in this operation. We should again repeat that whilst we will support those who already qualify for aid from the major agencies it is not conditional on our part that this should always be the case. Anyone in need of assistance of any age, any standing or status, can ask for our help. We will do all that we can within our means and ability to do so. Your approach whether direct to us,through a relative or a friend, or any other person will be dealt by us with the utmost confidentiality. We would be pleased to hear from any person who would like to assist us in ensuring the winter safety of Haleigh citizens and their near neighbours. Finally, in an earlier edition we stated we had been told on registering our post box number that anyone who handed in post by hand to our post box number direct at the Church Street sorting office, this would not require a postage stamp. Having had a refusal, we were told this only applied for Xmas! As they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch!! Fred Breyer 01473 829127: Peter Gower 01473 827005. ‘Living With Loss’ We all experience ‘Loss’ at different times of our lives. Loss can be experienced through the death of a loved one or different circumstances such as loss through redundancy, poor health, financial, friends, pets, natural disasters, plus much more. ‘Living with Loss’ is a group which meets on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month, 2.30pm – 4pm . It is a place where everyone has the opportunity to say how they are feeling at this moment in their life. No-one has to say more than they want to, and, of course, each person’s situation is different. However, we hope this will give people the opportunity to be both comforted and encouraged by what others have to say as well as by sharing their own experiences. The next date is March 9th in ‘The Guildroom’ at The Guildhall (entrance door across the churchyard from St Mary’s) continuing on April 13th, May 11th, June 8th and so on. We know it can be daunting to walk into something new where you might not know anyone, but if you think a group like this might help you, we would encourage you to try and see what you think – there is no obligation to keep coming but those who have come are finding this one session a month very valuable. We would love to welcome you to give it a try. One lady in particular has already been brave enough to try and found the group ‘much better than I expected, very welcoming and useful’. We are very friendly and talk over a cuppa and cake. If you would like to come but are anxious about the initial contact please give me a call and have a chat.. Contact or leave message for Pauline on 07909 796266 or just arrive on the 9th.

Sudbury Businesses Offer Pain Free Tattoos via Hypnosis Two Sudbury based businesses have joined forces to offer a rather unique service. Illustrated Primate on Kings Street is now offering pain free tattoos with the assistance of hypnotist Benjamin Ryan of Sudbury Hypnosis on Gainsborough Street. Tattoos are an ever more popular form of self expression, but many people are put off by the pain. This could be the service they have been waiting for. Earlier in the year the two companies worked together on a series of experiments and are now offering it as a commercial service. “I was a bit sceptical to start with,” said Joe Hill, Tattoo Artist, “but having seen a few of these now I can say for certain there is something going on. I’m even going to get hypnotised for the next session on my own tattoos. I want to be able to tell customers what it is like first hand”. Lee Dobbs, also a tattooist at the shop, has already undergone hypnosis during the latest work on his back piece. Lee said of the experience “I was completely comfortable, I was able to communicate and talk easily to people. To talk to me you wouldn’t have even known I was being tattooed. This was a very different experience from previous sessions.” Hypnosis for pain management, including analgesia and even total anaesthesia, is a well documented phenomena. Most notably, Scottish surgeon James Braid travelled India in the early 1800s and documented extensive use of hypnosis as the only means of pain management during surgery. Noted American hypnotist Dave Elman further pioneered this work in the mid 20th Century. Hypnosis for pain free tattoos is a much newer idea, but there are a number of hypnotists and tattoo artists now experimenting in this area. “I did some experiments with hypno-anaesthesia a while ago, and I’ve wanted to try this ever since”, Said Benjamin Ryan, “Thanks to the excellent artists at Illustrated Primate I’ve now had that opportunity and it’s proven to be a success.” “Most of the clients come to see me at Gainsbourough Therapy Rooms first, to get an experience of hypnosis before their tattoo session. On one occasion, however, I happened to be at their shop when one of Lee’s customers was in quite some pain while getting his wrist tattooed. He asked for my help and I was able to successfully hypnotise him and completely remove the pain without interrupting Lee’s work” Sudbury Hypnosis www.sudburyhypnosis.co.uk 07967 473691

Melford Hall National Trust re-opens for a New Season As Easter approaches our staff and volunteers put the finishing touches to our winter clean, in readiness for the arrival of a new season of visitors on Wednesday 23 March. This year visitors will see a number of changes. We open an hour earlier at 12 noon and whilst the garden, tearoom and shop are open, in the house during the first hour we will offer short taster tours before opening completely. Children will find some new trails to test their ingenuity as they tour the house, and our gardeners have been refashioning some of our borders. This should re-invigorate some of our historic features whilst also adding new areas of interest. We are adding some new events for the summer holidays of which one is an afternoon of opera in the garden. Eboracum Baroque will perform a family oriented version of Henry Purcell’s opera King Arthur complete with singing warriors and magical spirits. Bring your children for a picnic in the garden while you all sit back and listen to the music. We will also have our usual programme of popular family events in the school holidays, starting with the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt over the four days of Easter. The highlight of this season will be the celebrations for Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday which falls on 28 July. Beatrix was a frequent visitor to her cousins at Melford Hall. As part of our Birthday Party celebration we will have a petting zoo where the children will be able to meet the animals that inspired the characters in her stories. To find out more about Melford Hall, our events, volunteering or National Trust Membership please call 01787 379 228 or look on www.nationaltrust.org.uk/melfordhall for more information.

Do you think Diets don’t work? A lot of people feel that diets don’t work but the simple fact is that diets DO work – it’s the people who don’t follow the rules properly that cause the problem. All too often people embark on a diet, lose the weight they want to then slip back into their old eating habits thinking they’re “fixed”!! The result is that their weight creeps up again until they’re back where they started (or worse!). The only way to stop this happening is to make sure you change your eating habits permanently! The saying is “if you do what you’ve always done you’ll get what you always got!!” This could be where Cambridge Weight Plan can help because it is an eating plan that enables you to lose your weight quickly (average weight loss is a stone a month*) but then goes on to teach you how to eat a well-balanced diet which keeps you satisfied so you can maintain your new healthy body long-term!! Spring’s the thing at The Boule-in! They can’t guarantee the weather at their forthcoming Spring fair, “Fete du Printemps”, which opens Saturday 2nd (10am – 5pm) and runs daily throughout the week until Sunday 10th April, but there will certainly be ‘Spring in the air’ at this delightful event and an evident ‘spring in the step’ of both Peter and Cathy Bullen, proprietors of Bildeston’s French boutique-store The Boule-in. “We were away in France sourcing new stock when we heard the thrilling news that we had been voted 11th in ‘Homes & Antiques’ magazine Top 50 UK Antique and Collectable shops/Fairs by a panel of very renowned designers and antique experts!” says Cathy. “At first we couldn’t believe it as we are still a very small new enterprise in the huge world of Interiors and Antiques. However they seem to have caught onto the fact that we have tried to produce a welcoming and uniquely charming atmosphere for our customers to enjoy”. She is absolutely right and it’s certainly one reason why many of their loyal and rapidly expanding group of customers continue to flock to their fairs. However, she modestly doesn’t mention the fact that the voting panel describes The Boule-in as being “affordable and right on trend”! The magazine’s February article has produced such a rush to their Kennington, London store that Peter and Cathy have had to return to France for another impromptu buying trip. “For the Suffolk Fairs we have to source beautiful stock for the barn AND the garden” they point out. With uniquely original, affordable “right on trend” pieces to style your home and garden this Spring, it seems that the Fete du Printemps is a must in your April calendar – after all, if its good enough for the likes of Mark Hill, Nicky Haslam and Sophie Conran it must be good enough for the likes of us! Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 You'll never guess where I've been! Ollie (the Black) Cat says I’m getting too big for my boots since visiting Kelvin at Keith Avis Printers. Our lovely volunteer, Elaine, took me along when she called in to order a pop up banner which she will donate to SESAW. Kelvin was very helpful and just found time to pose for photos before putting the Community News magazine “to bed”. Back at SESAW Mum discovered a poor old black cat in a cardboard box on our drive. Sadly he died but a young ginger tom found in a field is doing well. An irresponsible human dumped four cockerels in our paddock, regardless of how they would survive the attentions of the local fox. Yet another heartless person lobbed a ten week old, worm infested kitten over a high garden wall and left it for dead. “Lobby” is now receiving lots of love and attention from one of our foster families and their dog. Maisie the Springer is progressing well after complicated leg surgery. Donations to help fund her treatment can be made at Swayne and Partners in Long Melford, at SESAW or via our JustGiving page entitled Amazing Maisie. Everyone at SESAW is delighted that Mum (known to you as Maggie) will receive a Babergh and Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Award next month. The dear lady says she is only "the tip of the iceberg" because all the volunteers make everything possible. Well she's always been our hero, now it's official! Barbara’s Bonanza Sale will be held in the Parish Room, Stratford St. Mary, 10am on 2nd April followed by our Spring Sale on 10th April, 10-3pm, the Old School Long Melford. Tables may still be available, call 01206 263269 to check. Thank you for the latest batch of Washbrook woolly wonders! Their blankets and coats are soooo warm and cosy, especially the hi-vis vest Betty made just for me. Another big thank you to all the kind people who donated cat litter for our feline inmates recently. Now I’ve started to “travel” more, as per my New Year resolution, I wonder which of my fellow Community News contributor I’ll visit next. There must be an interesting local business ready and willing to invite me, Kenny the Boss, Chihuahua. Friars Hall Nursing Home: RSPB Big Birdwatch Friars Hall Nursing Home joined with other households across the country in the RSPB Big Bird watch on the last weekend of January. This is an annual national survey that the RSPB organises to see how our native birds are faring. Sparrows and Starlings haven dramatically fallen in numbers in recent years while the populations of Wood Pigeons and Magpies have increased. We certainly found this at Friars Hall with a whopping 38 Pigeons spotted in our tall trees. We also saw Blackbirds, Sparrows, Robins, Great Tits and Chaffinches. Many birds are drawn to our gardens every day because of the bird food we put out on the bird tables that are dotted around the house. That’s of course when the squirrels don’t get to it first! The RSPB sent us a kit beforehand with an identification chart for different species of birds. It was very helpful - we’d thought we were watching Blue Tits but they were really Great Tits! The residents sat for an hour in our warm conservatory with all the blinds pulled back so we had a lovely view of the gardens, the experience made complete with mugs of tea. One of our residents brought along his binoculars. We enjoyed it so much that bird watching is going to become a regular part of our activities programme. We can’t wait for the swallows to arrive!

Kersey Mill Newsletter It’s far worse than we thought! That’s a phrase that unfortunately has been said a lot just recently. A central main timber measuring 8.2m high x 11 x 11 that appeared to be sound to the eye from distance turns out to be rotten throughout the middle. In some areas paper thin. As more of the timber flooring and joists are being repaired we edge closer and into areas that have been inaccessible since the 1960’s. On reaching the central timber the decay is so sever the only solution is to replace it. Whilst working on the second floor immediately below the bolter we discovered drawings and numbers along with interesting writing which presumably were the marks left by the previous miller. These markings together with the recent repairs will be open to the public to view on April 24th There will also be a fabulous display of vintage vehicles. We will be opening from 10.30am to 4.30pm. We welcome you all and look forward to sharing our progress. Spring seems to have arrived early with daffodils and snowdrops in abundance, we think the mild weather may also have fooled the swans that have successfully raised their brood here for the past 3 years, It was wonderful to see them back initially with one of 2 of the youngsters in toe however just lately it would appear that the adults have sent the cygnets on their way.

Bigger and better than ever, the Chamberlin Hall Amateur Players Society (CHAPS) put on their annual pantomime at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston. This year it was the the turn of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' which enabled the cast to bring characters to life; from Jack (Debbie Bailey) and Dame Dolly Durden (Adrian Chinnery) to the evil Ms Creep (Caroline Gage). Directed for a fifth year by Lesley Woods, Principal of Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts (MLSPA); the pantomime involved some students from the Bildeston branch of MLSPA and showcased their perfectly cheorgraphed routines and acting ability and of course their lovely smiles! The stage was even graced with a lovely friesian cow called Bessie - who was brought to live with the help of MLSPA students Emma Knock and Hollie Morsman. Full of song, dance, jokes and laughs the show entertained over two weekends with six performances. This year saw the addition of an EXTRA matinee performance to meet with demand! CHAPS 2016 performers consisted of Debbie Bailey, Janet Mackie, Adrian Chinery, Colin Bartram, Caroline Gage, Linda Underwood, Lucy Lester, Christine Hubbard, Ellen Roper and David Piggot. In addition there were many people involved back stage; so special thanks to Lesley Woods, Jane Fellingham, Robin Sidgwick, Will and Eleanor Pratt, Michael Rose, Adam and Lyn Chinery, Gill and Ellena Cook, Shirley Hines, David Spraggins, Mike Biddulph, June Taylor, Brenda Salisbury and Betty Robinson. The work of CHAPS provides much needed funds to enable the upkeep of a wonderful facility in Chamberlin Hall. If you are not familiar with the hall - do take a look! With a large stage, with lighting and and sound, changing rooms, a full bar and kitchen facilities as well as multiple rooms, one of which holds a full sized snooker table, it is a fantastic facility on your doorstep available to hire. If anyone is interested in joining CHAPS in future productions either on stage or behind the scenes please contact Adrian on 01449 741253. To find out more about Chamberlin Hall call June on 01449 740995.

Living with Dying – May 14th 2016 As May 14th gets closer we are keen to help you see how visiting the stands in St Mary’s on the day can help YOU. Here is a personal experience to share with you……. If Only I’d Known .... Not asking a simple question many years ago meant that I have never had the peace of knowing that I did the very best I could by both my mother and my grandmother. And it would have been so simple .... I was a teenager at the time of my father’s death. Terminal illness and death, with all that encompassed, was never spoken about in our family - certainly not in terms of making any plans beforehand or asking what people wanted for themselves when the inevitable time came. It was taboo - something to be swept out of sight and dealt with at the time with a stiff upper lip and as little fuss as possible. My mother had made “the arrangements” when my father died and we simply attended our first funeral. I do not remember any discussion whatsoever, either before or after. There was no stone or marker to commemorate his passing. So I didn’t know much about anything. I was not a great deal older when my mother died and needless to say, despite the fact she had been very ill for nearly three years there had not been one conversation about what was happening or what would happen. It was left to my brother and me to “sort things out” and, in our ignorance we did. We did not want to leave it to my grandmother (my mother’s mother, in her nineties), who lived with us, as we felt it was appalling enough for her to have outlived her daughter and so we wanted to spare her any additional burden. Needless to say, she would not discuss whether this actually would have been a burden or not and she refused to attend the funeral saying only that she didn’t want the fuss her wheelchair would cause. Mum died in hospital so they organised a funeral director and told us who it was. My mother did not belong to any church so we organised a minister to take her funeral at the crematorium. As my father had been cremated, we simply assumed this was what we should do. My mother had arranged for my father’s ashes to be scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at the crematorium by the staff there, so we did the same for her. We followed the same procedure when my grandmother died a few years later. I don’t know why my mother chose to do this but I know why I did. I had absolutely no idea what went on at a crematorium “behind the curtain”, so to speak, and of course, no-one spoke of such things or asked any questions. I simply assumed that they waited until they had enough bodies then lit the fire. I knew some families had the ashes returned to them but I didn’t see how they could be sure they got back the remains of their loved one and I didn’t want part of someone else’s loved one. If only I’d known ... As I grew older and wiser and the world became a more “open” place where all sorts of things that had once been taboo, certainly within our own family, were being openly discussed, I realised how easily I could have made things more bearable both at the time and for the future. I should simply have asked what happened at a crematorium. I am embarrassed to say that I actually only asked that question in my sixties and of course discovered the huge amount of integrity and care that is taken with every soul that passes through their doors, both in terms of ensuring the ashes are indeed entirely uncontaminated and that every consideration and dignity is offered to the deceased and the deceased’s family and friends. Had I asked that simple question forty years ago, we would have been able to scatter my mother’s and grandmother’s ashes privately, where we thought might be appropriate for them instead of leaving them for strangers to scatter. We might have been able to do a lot of things differently but we just did what we thought was right at the time. I can see there’s no point whatsoever in feeling guilty for what might have been. We have now learned and can make sure we talk to our own loved ones and let them know what we would like, to make it easier for them. I think I might just write it all down for them, too. Today, there is so much information out there to help everyone educate and inform themselves, start to put things in place and make little preparations now, that will help so very much later, at a difficult and emotional time. Do not be afraid to talk about your wishes, hopes and fears. Always ask questions and, most of all, never put yourself in the position of having to say, “If only I’d known ...” To avoid this pitfall and many others, come and visit us at St Mary’s Church for our LIVING with DYING event, from 10am - 4pm, on Saturday 14 May 2016 where we will have all the professionals and services available to talk with you, inform you and answer all your questions. An hour spent browsing and enjoying a coffee with us could save you wishing later that you had done something differently. We look forward to seeing you and being of service. Jess Janas

The Horseshoes Inn Cockfield wins CAMRA Award The Horseshoes Inn Cockfield near Lavenham has just received a CAMRA (campaign for real ale) award for West Suffolk. This was awarded for serving quality cask conditioned Suffolk Ales and Ciders and knowledge of how to look after and serve tradional cask ales and beers. This traditional 14th century thatched pub has been restored to its former glory. Full of oak beams and medieval features including a large double sided inglenook fire place and bread oven creating an abundance of character with a warm friendly atmosphere. This family run freehouse serves traditional homemade pub food sourced locally consisting of favourites such as sausage and mash, liver and bacon, home made pies and puddings, fresh fish and a traditional Sunday roast. All at a very affordable and sensible price. There is a newly built safe children's play area in the large gardens at the rear of the pub along with ample secure parking, also a lovely beer garden in the front of the pub which gets the sun for most of the day and lovely large round tables which are very social. The owners Lloyd and Jessica Warwick have also just been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor. Lloyd runs the front of house and Jessica operates the kitchen and they are both delighted with the success of the business after only 18 months of trading since buying and restoring this beautiful Thatched Inn. Prior to Lloyd and Jessica buying the Horseshoe Inn it was closed so it is great to see a good family run traditional pub open up again, when so many village pubs are closing their doors or being converted into private homes. If you pay a visit, which of course we recommend, you will not be disappointed. The Horseshoes Inn has a function room and caters for private functions such as birthdays, group get togethers, parties, with no hire charge for the room. Friends of Capel Library The friends held their Annual General Meeting in the Village Hall on Saturday January 16th. It was a fairly difficult meeting in that we had to compete with music from the pantomime going on next door. The outgoing chairman reported a year of consolidation, with some innovations in the library with the introduction of wifi, as well as the installation of a digital projector and screen enabling film presentations. Our financial position was good despite expenditure during the year, but we anticipated additional expenditure in the light of the cut backs imposed by Suffolk County Council. One new trustee was elected for the coming year. Our 100 Club continues to grow. We are now able to offer three prizes each month one of £10, and two of £5. The winners in January were Christine Phasey £10 , Kevin Austrin and Nancy Hunt both £5, and in February Doreen Parker £10 and Dave Busby and Ann Powell both £5. Please make a date in your diary for our Evening event (see below) on the 30th March. Please also support the events being organised in the Library - Billy Elliott on the 31st March and the Jurassic event for children in the Easter School Holidays. Half Marathon for Friends of the Library. Katharine Liu, who works at Capel Library, is going to run the Colchester Half Marathon in March. She and her friend Ali have agreed to provide sponsorship for the Friends and have already raised £185. Sponsorship Forms are available in the Library, so please support them both. Thirteen Miles is a long way !! Our heartfelt thanks to them both. You can sponsor online by going to https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/katharine-liu

Landscape and Wildlife Photography in the UK Wednesday 30 March at 7.30pm The Friends of Capel Library have invited Andrew Bailey to give us an illustrated lecture on landscape and wildlife photography in the UK. Andrew won the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year in 1995, and more recently has had several pictures published in the international Garden Photographer of the year. He also won prizes in the Royal Photographic Society international slide competitions. He will be talking about the making of one of these photographs. The evening promises to be a feast for the eyes, as well as an incentive for us to get our cameras out. Light refreshments will be served, and tickets will be priced at £5 [£4 for Friends] and the lecture takes place in the Library. www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Hadleigh Hairloom here... Well spring is about to spring upon us, so to speak, and we thought it was high time we share news and the latest goings on. The finishing touches have been put to the re-fit and we now have more client space. Whilst longer processes are developing we are able to accommodate more of the less time consuming procedures. Staff levels have also increased. I’m sure, very sure, that almost all of you know who Kiera is. You remember that that 15 year old Saturday girl/gofer, the ‘kid’ who got all the rubbish jobs, swept the floor, made the coffee……. Covered up for us when we double booked? Well she stuck to it. Kiera has studied hard, worked hard and is now a junior stylist. We are very proud of her, and we are very proud and grateful that we are able to keep her. Sadly not all apprenticeships result in a job at the salon you trained in but with our clients amazing continued support we have enough work to warrant a permanent position for Kiera. To help her get off the ground, Kiera’s price list is slightly less than the regular one. All services with our junior stylist are offered at 25% off until 31st December 2016. Kiera is a capable and pleasant young stylist so if you’d like to make an appointment or just walk in for a cut or blowdry please feel free. And finally. We’re into spring already, the year is one sixth done, time is charging on. So relax a little, enjoy your spring, chill out over the coming months doing the things you love – then come and tell us all about it. Wishing everybody the best of the best. Sharron, Julie, Laura, Kellee, Sarah and Kiera. And the furry staff Pickle, Widget and Pepper.

Hadleigh Craft and Produce Market Hadleigh Farmers Market has ceased to operate, however I have taken over the arrangement with St. Marys Church and am re-branding the event as Hadleigh Craft and Produce Market. The event will take place on the first friday of each month, as previously from 9.30am until 1pm. The first Market will be on Friday 4 March. The by know familiar yellow signs will continue to be placed around the town in the days before each event. In the hope that we can attract more exhibitors and footfall to the event, it will be renamed to encourage stall holders in addition to food suppliers, though there will still be a good selection of food offerings. If any readers make or produce and would like to have a table at the event, these are available (£10 if booked/paid in advance, or £15 on the day subject to availability) St. Marys host a coffee morning every friday in the church, which is a well attended event, so there is already an established group of attendees. This event is arranged to support the regular weekly friday outdoors market, and in the hope of bringing visitors to the town to visit our other shop owners on the High Street. Any interested parties should contact Helen on 07738 940054 or email charlottescc@btinternet.com with any questions.

The Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice Wishes to announce that

After 32 years of hard work and dedication

Pastry chef Nicholas (Nick) Henn has joined the kitchen team at The Bildeston Crown, the Suffolk inn now managed as tenants by Chef Chris Lee and his wife Hayley. Although he is only 22 years old, Nick has already worked alongside a number of high profile chefs. Growing up in Coggeshall, just over the Nick Henn and Chris Lee border in Essex, Nick completed his chef’s training on a day-release scheme at the Colchester Institute whilst gaining experience working at local restaurant Baumanns. A stint with Gary Rhodes in London was followed by a move to Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire where Nick was a member of the pastry section for the past 4 ½ years. In 2014, whilst at le Manoir, Nick was a finalist for pastry in the very prestigious Royal Academy of Culinary Arts Annual Awards of Excellence. Nick has known Chris for over six years, having worked with him on a number of charity fund-raising events and so when Chris and Hayley returned to The Bildeston Crown last September, Nick was ready to seize the opportunity to return to East Anglia and finally work with the Suffolk chef. “There is quite a lot of adjustment to working at The Bildeston Crown after Le Manoir,” the young chef admits. “For starters it is an awful lot smaller! However, I am really enjoying working with Chris, someone I have professionally admired for some time. I also really appreciate the opportunity to put my own stamp on the pastry section. I love making bread and so it is great that this is taken as a serious element of any meal at The Bildeston Crown. I am also very excited to have the freedom to develop my own style of dessert. I believe passionately that we can cut back on sugar, enhance flavour and produce creative and beautifully presented dishes that are also healthier.” Chris Lee is delighted to have such an experienced specialist pastry chef in his kitchen. “With Nick on board, we are now a small but perfectly formed team. We have Stuart Darton who has been with me for the best part of 20 years; Luke Cornelius who has worked with me for two years and the hugely experienced Tim Johnson, formerly chef-proprietor of Michelin-starred Apicus in Cranbrook, who has been an invaluable support since we relaunched in September. We all agree that pastry is a specialist area in any kitchen and are happy to welcome Nick to the team. All in all, life is pretty sweet at The Bildeston Crown!” The Bildeston Crown, High Street, Bildeston, Suffolk IP7 7EB Tel: 01449 740510

The power of music in dementia

our Senior Partner, Dr John Flather

One of the big fears about dementia is losing the ability to recognise friends and family and the power of communication. It can be a frightening time moving into care and away from what is familiar, yet evidence shows that linking positive memories to music can help people feel safe and among friends, and gives care staff a route into conversations that link people to their memories which can overcome the isolation. If you know someone who has early dementia and would like to find out how you can help them to create a Music Mirror, I am holding two introductory sessions in the Leisure Centre during April. Please ring me or email to let me know so I can make sure I have enough materials. It is all free and sponsored by the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. If you can’t make those dates, let me know and I’ll try and sort some other sessions. Dates: 7th April 7.30pm, 12th April 7.30pm For further information: www.musicmirrors.co.uk Contact: Phil Wells 01473 827878 or phil@the-wells.net

is retiring on the 31 March 2016 We are holding two Informal Open Events for patients to call in and wish Dr Flather farewell Thursday 31st March 11.00 am – 12.00 noon at Boxford Branch Surgery and 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm at Hadleigh Health Centre A book will be available at both Surgeries from the beginning of March for any farewell messages 30

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Some of my humans at the Centre are observing Lent this month, in the run up to an early Easter. This means giving up something as an act of self-denial. Well you won’t get the herd doing any such thing! The horses and ponies are on a strict programme of care, ordained by Lyn, and however much they eye the feed room, she does not let the giving of treats become the norm. So they are not going to give up their ‘End of the Day’s Work’ slice of apple or carrot for anything! I am going to tell you about some of my riders this month because they have been generous in granting me permission, and I shall be able Rebecca having a laugh! to post photographs taken of ME. No mud, no rug, just the beautiful bare facts, you will see how big and black I am. Above is Rebecca, smiling down at the camera (and showing off my ears, and lovely forelock). She has been coming to the Shelley Centre on and off since she was three years old and I enjoy having her back on me on Fridays. So that you can see me sideways on, this lady in pink posed for the camera on her last ride with me. I am proud to say that I have helped her over a terrible injury to her spine when she fell “our” success story off her own horse and suffered compression fractures to her back. Fortunately she was wearing an inflatable back protector; she would have broken her neck otherwise. Her accident happened last April, but with courage and determination she got back into my saddle last Autumn, using my physiotherapy to build up her strength once more; now she is riding her own live horse again. Brilliant! Let me introduce you to Matthew, one of my younger riders. He has recently passesd Grade 1 in Horse Care and has a certificate and badge to show for his great efforts at memorising a whole Matthew and the farrier new ‘horsey’ vocabulary. Here is Matthew seeing our farrier, Roger, at work, and the horse with her hoof up is Parys, wearing a pale blue rug today. Parys has many outfits so I enjoy guessing what she will be wearing next, I can see her stable from my open door. Parys has a great friend in Barry; he rides Babs, my room-mate, here at the Centre, and afterwards he goes to commune with Parys in the yard. She likes to blow on his hands and nuzzle his knees; it’s a very special moment for them both. At the end of this month it will be time for another great celebration, so here’s wishing my readers a very happy Easter from Barry with his girl me and the ‘family’ at the Shelley centre. www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 18 On the outskirts of the parish on the north side of Wattisham Road is a private house that since 1921 has been called Bentons. It was built in 1851 as the Rectory and was home to four successive incumbents. Part one of ‘When Bentons was Bildeston Rectory’ looks at the house builder Revd Joseph Gedge, who was here until his retirement in 1879. He was responsible for building the village school between Chapel Street and Duke Street and for establishing Bildeston Workmen’s Horticultural Society, which held its annual shows on the Rectory lawns. The last part of ‘Working on the land in 17th century Bildeston’ features three people to whom farming was an important part of their lives, a yeoman, a husbandsman and a widow. From probate inventories drawn up at their deaths, their working lives in agriculture have been discovered. Extracts from the diary of William Freeman Squirrell, landlord at the King’s Head from 1854 until 1885, continue with the late 1850s. William noted national and local events including Lord Palmerston becoming prime minister, lead stolen from St Mary’s Church roof, William’s son frederick being apprenticed to a draper in South London and the murderous actions at Preston St Mary of William Green. Oswald Simpson, formerly of Bildeston and now of Elmsett, has kindly loaned his collection of post-cards, some of which appear as illustrations to this issue’s articles. He also loaned some interesting documents and ‘The canal that never was!’ tells the story from one of them. In 1785, John Phillips planned the route for a canal from London to Norwich and Kings Lynn. One of the places that the canal’s 50-metre swathe was to pass through was Bildeston, which supposedly would have given villagers a 211/2 hour journey to London, as opposed to 96 hours by road. In issues 12 to 17, Peter Hubbard of Bath wrote about his childhood memories of Bildeston during the 1930s. Peter and his sister Catherine Green of Harleston were re-united with their cousin Ashley Hubbard of Bildeston, when they visited the Editor and recalled their family history. Your letters, pictures and memories of Bildeston in the recent past and articles concerning the village’s history are most welcome. Please contact Sue Andrews on 01449 740673. Bildeston History Quarterly is on sale from the beginning of March at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Keith Avis Newsagents and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh and Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

To the woods, to the woods... Volunteering at Orchard Barn is great fun but we occasionally get the chance to work off-site. Regular winter visits to a 200 acre wood near Hadleigh is a case in point. Several of us met at the woods one fine January day and were asked by Graham the woodsman to help him stack logs. He had felled all the trees in one small section of the wood and cut them into 1m lengths. Using timber tongs we stacked many of the logs and cleared a path so they could be taken away, not this summer but in the summer of 2017. Lunch was a barbecue, cooked over charcoal produced in the woods by Graham, and eaten in the January sunshine. A very rewarding and productive day as Orchard Barn will have some building timber in return for our much appreciated efforts. We’re going to the woods again soon, why don’t you join us? To find out more come along any Wednesday, we are SW of Mill Road, Battisford or visit our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193.

Down to Earth ...with Dave With John Rye giving up his regular gardening column we thought that I should take over his spot and include something similar in our monthly garden club article. The idea is not only to cover gardens, but also to cover allotments as this is my particular interest, so here goes. The weather really has been terrible over the last few months, with the poor plants not sure what they are supposed to be doing, everything is so early. Goodness knows what will happen if we do get a sudden sharp frost, just be ready with some protection such as fleece, at least with the very reliable weather forecasts available on the web we do get some warning. One bonus has been that the daffodils grown down on the allotment just for picking have given several large bunches that sit proudly at home. As the soil is so wet I have sown my onion sets individually in four inch pots in the greenhouse. They do take up a lot of room, as there are over forty of them, but they are growing very well and will be planted out soon. Now would be a good time to get your lawnmower serviced before all that grass cutting is needed. If the weather stays mild buddleia can be cut back hard and mop head varieties of hydrangea can have their dead flower heads removed, along with any weak or damaged stems. Don’t forget to buy your seed potatoes and start them chitting in good light using old egg trays. I only grow first earlies these days and this seems to avoid problems with the dreaded blight. Well, that’s all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Our meeting 8th February – Exotic Gardens We were delighted to welcome Andrew Brogan from The Henstead Exotic Garden at our February meeting. What Andrew has created in 12 years is nothing short of breath taking. Starting from a completely greenfield site, he now has a 2 acre fully landscaped exotic garden packed full of unusual plants, which has received awards and national acclaim from the likes of Alan Titchmarsh. In an Andrew Brogan from Henstead entertaining presentation Andrew Exotic Garden chatting with club outlined how the garden was members after his talk constructed and gave tips on growing plants which are just that little bit different. Two favourites in his garden are a hardy palm which can tolerate temperatures of down to -17 degrees Celsius, and a bamboo which grows at the rate of 30 feet a month in peak season! The garden, not far from Southwold, is open every Wednesday from May to October. A few of our members have already been and would highly recommend it – the Garden Club has already pencilled it in for a future trip out. Next meeting – AGM Our next meeting is our AGM on Monday March 14th 7.30 at the Town Hall. This is when we set out our programme for the year ahead – a full schedule has been arranged which we are excited about, as much of it involves new subjects, for example, garden art and trees for your garden. Why not come along and find out what we are all about? Entry to the AGM is free and I even hear that there will be some cake on offer! We are also pleased to announce that our annual membership fee (which covers the period April 2016 – March 2017) has been kept at just £10. Andy Leeder (Chairman)

Taking pride in keeping Suffolk safe

SUFFOLK CONSTABULARY Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team Since the New Year there has been an increase in the number of particular crimes within the 39 villages within the Babergh East area. These crimes have occurred in the following villages, Hintlesham, Chattisham, Wenham, Burstall, Elmsett, Washbrook, Freston and Layham Burglaries – Other Buildings, These relate to sheds, garages or outbuildings where items such as ride on mowers, power tools, bicycles and hand tools are stolen. Protect your Shed & Garage by following these simple steps… • Fit a strong hasp and staple secured to the door and frame with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. • Use a good quality closed shackle padlock,(some have an integral alarm built in) • Door hinges should also be secured with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. • Windows can be secured and obscured by fitting internal bars or grille and net curtains. • Keep doors and windows locked. • Fit additional locks to up and over garage doors. Anchoring and garage defenders. • A battery operated audible alarm can be used to deter intruders. • Security mark items of value with your postcode and house number or name. Do not leave valuable equipment unattended. • Install external lighting with Dusk to Dawn automatic sensors. • Expensive items should be chained to a ground anchor or post securely fitted to the floor. • Photographs of expensive items, a record of their model and serial number will assist in their recovery if stolen. Vehicle Crimes valuables being not only left in the vehicles but on display, then the opportunist thieve comes along smashing a window and making off with such items as Sat Navs, laptops, Ipods, handbags and even cash. Protect Your Car By These Following Steps… • Lock windows & doors whenever you park • Choose busy well lit areas for on-street parking • Don’t leave anything in your car remove ALL temptation • If you have a garage at home use it • If you have alloy wheels, use lockable wheel nuts • If you have a Sat Nav, remove itand the holder and wipe away the suction pad marks • Look for carparks with CCTV & police approved ParkMark award. Please help us to help you should you be unfortunate enough to have anything stolen and think about marking your property. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PROPERTY MARKING?

WHY? • Your property is visibly linked to your address. Thieves run the risk that if they are caught in possession of it they are linked to the scene of a crime. • You can be reunited with your property – wherever it may have turned up • It is less attractive to a thief – they cannot sell it on as easily • It provides evidence to Police – it may be the final piece of proof needed to secure a conviction HOW? To make your mark unique and easily traceable, use your postcode and house number/first two letters of house name, e.g.: AB1 1AA - 24 Make the mark PERMANENT and OBVIOUS to a thief*. Go online and search ‘property marking’ to find companies who supply stenciling kits – these will chemically etch your code. Alternatively you could incise the code in with a sharp implement. For outdoor equipment, go over the area with white paint for maximum visibility – it may be dark when the thief strikes. White gloss paint works well on wooden-handled garden tools – although it’s not permanent, it takes a while to remove and most thieves will decide it’s not worth the effort. For items such as antiques you may wish to consider invisible marking – you can buy UV pens for £1 from Suffolk Police – phone 101 to be put through to your local station. For further advice – ask to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer. *Please bear in mind, permanent marking may affect the value of your possessions should you decide to sell them in the future. ONE LAST THING…If you use the internet, please go to www.immobilise.com Create yourself an account and log all your serial numbers and property details. Its FREE, it’s SECURE and it’s supported by Police nationwide. It can help us to get your stuff back to you if we find it. Mandy, PCSO 3108 Coleman

Sally takes a Bow at Newton Green A year of slings and arrows could be on the horizon for Newton Green Golf Club’s new ladies’ captain Sally Cade. She hails from Nottingham, and dressed up as Robin Hood for her frosty morning drive-in. Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, the Sheriff of Nottingham and a whole host of other characters from the forest turned up to support the recently retired Colchester school games teacher. Vice captain Rebecca Evans (Maid Marion), The big crowd on the first captain Sally Cade (Robin Hood) tee then saw her hit an and Di Cunningham (Friar Tuck) arrow-like drive of long bow proportions down the fairway. The opening shot of her season travelled 194 yards, a record for a ladies drive-in at the club, and beat a few drives by some incoming male captains in recent years. Before starting her season, Sally watched retiring captain Sheila Walter conclude her year by putting out on the 18th green. Drive-in results: 10-hole Stableford, 53 Angela Chapman and Susan Sills, 51 Sue Thurgate and Pat Walsh, 50 (ocb) Glenys Grove and Clarice Chittenden, 50 Pat Hawkins and Sue Hobbs.

Early Spring at Hadleigh Bowling Club Even though the outdoor season is some 6 weeks away (mid April) there is a lot going on at the Stone Street Club. From early January through to the end of March we have our internal Short Mat league which has 11 teams competing this winter. This is in addition to our Ipswich and District League fixtures in which we enter 2 teams, the Spinners and Weavers. Our fortunes have been mixed as usual but it looks as though we are finishing stronger that we started back in September. To get the outdoor season going we have our annual “Early Spring Men’s Coffee Morning” on Saturday 19 March 10.00 to Mid Day; so called because the male members of the club provide the home made cakes and the coffee. It is an opportunity to get together after the winter break and also to welcome potential new members who can simply have a look at what the club has to offer without the pressure of having to have a bowl. The U3A Painting and Water Colour Art Group meet at our Club on the first and third Mondays of each month and have done so for some 2 years now so we are particularly pleased that they are putting on an exhibition and sale of their work in conjunction with our Coffee Morning on the 19 March. This is a new venture for both of us and both clubs are looking forward to the event. Our outdoor season kicks off with a working party over the weekend of 9/10 April to prepare the grounds for the season ahead and then a drive and supper on the following Saturday 16 April. We will be holding an Open Weekend for all newcomers on 30 April / 1 May and more details of that will be in the April HCN.

Clubs already committed to attend include, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Ipswich YM, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury, Stowmarket, Felixstowe, Braintree, Harwich, Maldon, Brightlingsea and of course our own Hadleigh Baa-Baa’s. TAG Rugby is a form of non-contact rugby open to all ages but which is specifically used for the development of the sport for “Mini’s”, the U-7 and U8 age groups. Whilst TAG Rugby has many features of the full game the emphasis is always on FUN. Newton Green Seniors Heading for Century The membership of Newton Green Golf Club senior section for men is about to hit the 100 mark, it was reported at the group’s annual meeting. Retiring captain Mike Barnes thanked members for supporting The Bridge Project during his year which, for the first time, had been a single charity effort with the club’s male and female sections. A packed meeting included discussion on moving the seniors’ day from mid- morning Tuesdays to early Monday mornings, but the proposition was narrowly defeated. The seniors will also continue to meet on Thursday mornings. New captain James Fraser announced he would be supporting the Kernos Centre in Sudbury, which specialises in offering professional counselling for people with emotional and personal problems. John Ford was elected vice captain. During the meeting Andrew Johnson outlined proposals to re-align the first hole in order to eliminate shots heading towards cottages to the right of the fairway.

The Lady Vets Black Tee Monday The Lady Vets ventured forth on the back nine of the Gainsborough on Monday, 8th February for a nine holes Stableford off the new short course black tees. It didn’t really speed up the round although everyone was battling against the increasingly fierce winds of Storm Imogen. The winning score of 29 points by birthday girl, Christine McVeigh, sounded more than respectable! Anne Hemmings was second with 25 Christine McVeigh, winner with points and Rosie Allen was third with 29 points over 9 holes as well as 22. The competition also coincided celebrating her birthday, chips out with Chinese New Year so an extra of the bunker on the 18th prize was given for the best score on the 4th and 9th holes of play (the lucky numbers for the year of the Firery Red Monkey) Lesley Hithcock won with 6 points. A quiz on all things Chinese was also devised to fill in the walking time between green and tee. Lesley Hitchcock, Debbie Howlett and Nina Deasy were first and won some Chinese Rice Crackers – all they could ever want in the world! After play we were invited to the Gallery bar to celebrate Gill Dutton and Christine McVeigh’s special birthdays - there was cake a-plenty, candles and balloons and it was such a pleasure to see all the non-players and social members who came to join them. Special thanks to Gill and to Christine for their hard work and hospitality and to Teresa Porter who came along with a sample of her own baking – now that is always a pleasure! We were also pleased to see the photograph Pat Dewsbury produced of her with Terry Wogan when he visited Stoke-by-Nayland many years ago. Pat seems to recall it was some time in the 1990’s. Pat is very pleased with the photograph, as she should be, it is a lovely one of them both together.

Hadleigh Carpet Bowls Club We are fast approaching the end of the 2015/16 Winter League and the club currently enjoy a comfortable mid table position. Recent performances at home have been solid against Shotley and Polstead which will hopefully see us in good heart for the forthcoming tussle with near neighbours Whatfield in March. The season ends with a difficult away match at table topping Rivers Ipswich before we begin to plan for the summer season. If you would like to come along and see for yourselves what goes on at Beaumont Primary School Thursday evenings from 7.30.until 10 give our Captain David a call on 01473 822814
