St Elizabeth’s to benefit from cartoon sale An exhibition and sale of 40 cartoons by Suffolk-based Keith Waite, one of Britain’s greatest-ever political and social cartoonist, will benefit St Elizabeth’s Hospice financially. One cartoon will be raffled in aid of St Elizabeth’s. The others are for sale and a percentage of the proceeds will also go to St Elizabeth’s, where Keith Waite died aged 87 last year. All the cartoons in the exhibition appeared in the Daily and Sunday Mirror between 1969 and 1986. They include some of Keith Waite’s sharpest portrayals of Premier Margaret Thatcher, her Ministers and Arthur Scargill and are sought after by collectors.

The exhibition is aboard the restored sailing barge Melissa moored at Orwell Quay.

It is open from 10am to 7pm on Saturday, 4 July and Sunday, 5 July.

New Zealander Keith Waite, a prize-winning childhood cartoonist, came to Britain in 1951. He was the Cartoonist Club’s cartoonist of the year in 1963. His work was known to readers across a wide range of newspapers and magazines. During his long career, he worked for newspapers in Glasgow, Punch, the Daily Sketch and the Sun before it was sold to Robert Murdoch. After leaving the Mirror, Keith Waite spent a year sailing from his home at Pin Mill before joining The Times City Diary. He retired in 1997.

His widow Renee said: “A published newspaper cartoon is relatively small but the artwork shown is large and incredibly detailed. It might seem like a heavy workload but Keith produced three cartoons a day for many years. He also produced line drawing, water colours and woodcuts, many of his great love, the sea.”

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers July 2015 Walk Our walk this month will be on Saturday July 11th. It will be a circular starting and finishing in Sudbury. Will travel from Hadleigh by bus leaving the bus station (Co-op side) at 8.50am. We will walk from Sudbury Bus Station to Twinstead via Ballingdon, Middleton Top, Little Henny, and return to Sudbury Bus Station via Great Henny, Henny Street, Middleton Village, and Ballingdon.

We will return to Hadleigh from Sudbury on the 2pm. bus arriving back at 2.30pm. There are some superb views on this walk, especially over looking the Stour Valley, and it is well worth the effort (bring your camera). There will be a midway refreshment stop at the Henny Swan, which is worth a visit on its own!

This walk is 8.5 miles in length, and is suitable for all walkers, children over 10, and your dog. We recommend strong shoes, or preferably walking boots as some of the paths are rough, and can be wet at times.

About 200 people crammed into Hadleigh's United Reformed Church on Saturday June 6th to experience the amazing musical talents of 50 local children as they performed both new and pre-prepared numbers under the inspirational direction of jazz musician Pete Letanka.

The children, from both Hadleigh and the surrounding villages, had spent the earlier part of the day in a workshop run by Pete learning half a dozen totally new songs from around the world. In addition, pupils from St. Mary's School, Hadleigh Community Primary School and Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts had come along with song and instrumental pieces they had been practising beforehand. Run and sponsored by the Rosa Simon Music Fund, the end result was an hour of wows, with the children, some of whom had never performed in front of an audience before, rising to the challenge and giving heartfelt and beautiful performances.

"This is what Rosa's Fund is all about!" explained Paul Simon, Rosa's father. "We aim to get an instrument into the hands of every child who wants one. We aim to pay for the costs of musical tuition for every child who wants to learn but family circumstances might not allow all this. And we aim to give performance experience to every child who wants to sing and play an instrument in front of an audience".

"A big thank you to everyone who helped make the workshop and concert such a success. We raised nearly £600 for Rosa's Fund which will go straight back into realising our aims. But once again a big thank you to the children and young people who took part: they promised wows and they delivered them!"

Hadleigh Ladies Hockey Club 30 Year Reunion - 3rd October 2015 30 years ago, Hadleigh Ladies Hockey Club was founded. Playing in its distinctive pink and blue shirts, on grass pitches at Hadleigh High School and Layham Road Playing Field, they first competed in the Suffolk Hales Waste League. With the progression of hockey onto all weather astro surfaces, the club had to train and play their home matches in Ipswich and at Wattisham Army Base. Finally, the Club reached the Eastern Area League, playing against teams in Cambridge, Welwyn Garden City and beyond. This was a great achievement for a small club, and in 2005 the club held a 20 year celebration ball. However, with no club base in Hadleigh, recruiting new members became more difficult and, as a result, the club folded in 2008. Ironically, not long after this, Hadleigh High School installed an astro surface, and the Club donated £2000 of the remaining club funds to this project but, sadly, this all came too late for the Club.

To mark what would have been the 30th anniversary of the Club, they are holding a fun match at Hadleigh High School and, in the evening, meeting in the function room of The George, Hadleigh.

Open auditions will be held on two evenings...1st July Whatfield Village Hall 7.30 and 6th July 7.30 in the Salvation Army Hall if possible, all talents, all skills for both onstage and back stage welcomed, for the peformances on 27th and 28th November. Parts vary from the scheming Rumple, the comically and daft Tittle and Tattle, the pompous Prime Minister, three members of the royal family, two inefficient guards, Millie the heroine, and a very bouncy and lively all age chorus group.The story is based on the German folk tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. but with the Players it will be set in Suffolk. The panto will be directed

by Diane Armour, and Sheila Roberts. Ring 01473 822000 should you like more details, or if you unable to make the dates and would wish to be considered for a part. A total cast of 18 are needed, last year there were 9 new faces on stage, perhaps you will be amongst them this year!

St. Margarets Matters On Saturday 23rd May, the PCC hosted a Spring Time Concert, at Whatfield Village Hall. The Hadleigh Community Choir entertained so well with a variety of songs and music in many styles. The audience enjoyed solos, duets and dance, and the opportunity to sing along. Whatfield Players members read selected extracts from A Suffolk Childhood by Simon Dewes. Our thanks to Simon Thompson, Peter Finch, Graham Holmes, the Choir members, all those who helped with food, prizes, the bar, and those who supported us with ticket sales. £450 was raised for funds.

Happy 100th Birthday Margaret!

On Wednesday 20th May Councillor Richard Whiting, the current Town Mayor, visited Margaret Jarvis to deliver flowers on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Margaret was born in Hadleigh, and has lived here all her life. She was a member of the choir of St Mary's Church for almost 80 years and in her younger days was well known for her very fine soprano solos and descants. She was also one of the first female bell ringers at St Mary's and was a ringer for over 70 years, and captain of the ringers for somewhere in the region of 30 years. She also sang in the Hadleigh Choral Society and was a member of the Hadleigh Detachment of the British Red Cross Society carrying out voluntary nursing duties at Ipswich Hospital, and also night duty at the Hadleigh First Aid Post during the second world war, in addition to her day job at the Food Office in the High Street.

She was educated at Threadneedle Street Church of England School and then went on to the Gregg School in Ipswich where she studied shorthand, typing and book keeping. Her typing and shorthand skills earned her her living for the whole of her working life, and were also passed onto others as she taught them at evening classes at the former Secondary Modern School in Station Road (now the Hadleigh Community Primary School). Margaret enjoyed her 100th birthday on 20th May at home, with visits from family and friends. She is very grateful to the Deputy Mayor and the Hadleigh Town Council for the beautiful arrangement of flowers that was presented to her, and would also like to thank all her friends for their cards, gifts and good wishes.

Whatfield CEVCP School are preparing for their annual sports week, and pupils have been pleased to take part in a variety of sports leading up to the week in July. Children in years 3 and 4 were very proud to be the winners of the Hadleigh mini-tennis tournament, which means they go through to the regional finals in Westbourne. Good Luck!

Winners of the Hadleigh We have also been celebrating our Mini Tennis beautiful art work, which was placed in a special exhibition at the cathedral to celebrate 100 years of the diocese.

The children who produced these inspiring pieces were all in reception or Key Stage One. The stunning work based on the cathedral itself has been on public display thanks to Mrs Jennings.

Great East Swim Event We were privileged to take part in two major events this week. Quad kids in Ipswich an athletics event which involves 640 Primary schools and four Inspired by the Cathedral different activities, and the Great East Swim Event, which took place in Crown Pools to celebrate the Open Water Swim. Our children enjoyed both events, and felt a great sense of achievement when taking part.

We love our Early Years Area, and the whole space is well used, with a range of activities for the children to explore. It is often used as all sorts of imaginary areas, and today there was a new landscape to explore.

Where to next?

The older children were entranced by a visit from Adrian the explorer, who told them all about his travels, and organised an orienteering session in the school grounds.

The hot weather has meant we really have needed to water our plants in the allotment, and I am pleased to say everything has really been growing well, with our first crop of lettuces given to parents today. Thanks must A visit from Adrian the go to the lovely grandparents we have who Explorer help to keep the allotment in order!

Not only have we had all these exciting opportunities, but I am pleased to say that we got through to the regional finals of Quiz club, and although the team never made it to the national event, they were very happy when they realised that they are the top team in Suffolk. Not bad for a little school of only 41 pupils!

Milden Singers The Milden Singers got the audience in the country mood during their May concerts with songs of Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond plus many more raising £1047 for Milden Pavilion Fund. Their next concerts are on 20th and 21st November and will have a classical twist. Orchard Barn – In at the shallow end One of the tasks for this year was to be further maintenance of the large pond. But we had no waders to keep our feet dry. Many calls were made in an effort to find waders but eventually two pairs were found on a skip! Of course they had to be repaired, after being filled with water to find the holes. So now a weir has been built at the upper end of the pond and reeds planted to help clean the water as it enters the pond. Water will pass over the weir and through more channels, also filled with reeds, before entering the main body of water. The gifts of native pond plants have been much appreciated. Originally the pond was a by-product, the hole was created by the extraction of clay-rich subsoil used in the construction of the buildings on site. We hope that the improved water quality and habitat will attract dragonflies, newts, frogs and other creatures essential to a healthy and thriving ecosystem.

Hello dear Readers. I am writing as the sun sets on the longest day of the year. It is very sad to think that we are heading back to those dark days. On the last Bank Holiday Monday, I suggested to a good friend that it might be an idea to take a rowing boat at Dedham. It was very busy and the boats, to my mind, were fairly expensive but it was pleasant to potter along the river for a few hours. The picture shows me rowing – a much more difficult exploit than it appears. A few weeks later I was aboard a much larger vessel in the form of Cunard’s Queen Victoria of 90,000 gross tonnage. We boarded in Southampton where the ship had arrived from the Cunard 175 year celebrations in Liverpool. We were blessed with lovely weather as we travelled on from Gibraltar to Barcelona, Monaco and through to Italy. Upon my return, I had an interesting time at the Chelmsford City Race Course.

I was quite taken a-back at the numbers of people and the amount that they were spending and drinking. There was next to no where to sit. I am not sure that it was our kind of thing!

I wonder whether the time has come for the Highways Authority to do something about the enormous lorries that are rumbling through Hadleigh and up Calais Street opposite my offices. I had cause to telephone one firm of hauliers whose massive lorry chose to execute a three point turn and back within inches of my window jack-knifing the cab in the process. Subsequently, I was appalled as I saw a juggernaut back in the face of the on-coming traffic, turn too sharply into Calais Street and to damage The Forge as the lorry dragged against its roof and wall. The Deputy Manager at Morrisions has assured me that these vehicles are not visiting their store As I have mentioned in the past, if you are hosting a Dinner Party or if you would like to take a dessert to someone else’s party do give Daphne Willis-Betts a call and you can purchase some of her delicious desserts. Kersey Mill Newsletter During early June Kersey Mill has seen the arrival of several new visitors, at the time of writing the kestrels that can be seen on live video in the Brickbarn have 3 kestrel chicks and another two eggs that hopefully will produce young any day.

The chicks require constant brooding for their first 10 days of life, where after they are then able to regulate their own body temperature. Their father provides the mother and the chicks with food. He has been leaving the nesting box to hunt for food. Once the chicks are a few weeks the mother will leave them to hunt for food. The chicks will fledge their nest gradually after about week four, they will increase the distance from the nest day by day, however will return to roost for at least two weeks. They will be fed for several weeks by their parents.

Another new family have been raised too this month along the riverbanks A pair of swans that previously hatched 7 eggs have once again returned. It is wonderful to see yet again this year another 7 have successfully hatched. The beautiful cygnets have been initially staying very close to their parents and on occasions they hitch a lift on their parents’ backs. We are hoping they will again stay here for several weeks before heading south on their travels towards Hadleigh and further down river to Layham.

The warmer weather has brought us the lush fresh water vegetation along with the water voles that have been spotted munching away. They can often be confused as brown rats. They are declining in numbers, so we are thrilled to have seen quite a few and hope they are nesting too.

Works to the Pitwheel continue with several spokes still needing attention, the sack hoist has been repaired together with plans for the next phase of the restoration, the next stage will consist of repairs to the wooden frame and floors but more on this next month.

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline As the date of the group arrival becomes imminent we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our supporters who have helped to make this years visit possible. Many people have dropped donations into our Charity shop but have not left their contact details so I have been unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions.

Without all the clothing, shoes, toys and medicines donated by the Local Community we would find ourselves in the position of so many other Links that have had to cut the number of children in the group as their funding was insufficient. We do try to give as much support as possible to the children, their families at home and also the Host Families who take the children into their homes for the whole month. Yes, the main purpose of the children’s visit is for Health Recuperation but how brilliant is it that we can also give them memories to take home that will last them a lifetime!

It is very very unlikely that any of the children who come in the group will ever leave Belarus again let alone come back to England. Occasionally a child is fortunate enough to receive an invitation for a Private Visit but with the increasing costs of air fares and visas we are seeing the number of these invitations becoming less and less each year.

The day after the children arrive we hold a “Clothing Party� for them, this is a very important event for the children as having arrived with only the clothes they are wearing they will be able to choose clothing for themselves and any siblings at home. The children do not mind that the clothing is second hand, it is amazing to see the look on their faces when they see all the clothes on display and know that they can choose whatever they want from what is available. As this is an ongoing program we are always happy to continue to receive donations of clothing for the children throughout the year, any age is appreciate as we not only provide clothing to the children when they come here but also to their brothers an sisters at home plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the program. We currently support families in Belarus with children age from birth to 17 years of age.

Fidelis Activity News The Mermaid:- As pubs are closing at frightening rate these days there was considerable interest in visiting a relatively new establishment which appears to be thriving. For this reason Lunch Bunchers carpooled there way to The Mermaid outside Ipswich city centre to sample their ever popular self-service carvery. It was easy to see why it is so well patronised at lunch and supper time with three hefty joints of beef, turkey and ham on offer together with an inordinate variety of vegetables. All size appetites are catered for from children to big eaters. Carvery and main menu prices are very reasonable for the amount of ‘no frill’ food served. The interior is deceiving as the massive expanse has been skilfully divided into smaller dining areas. There is a wellequipped children’s corner and staff are helpful and friendly. Several ladies are planning a return visit with their family and friends.

From Across The Pond:- Speaker, Teresa Dukes, spent her early years in the Carolinas only leaving when her family were posted to Suffolk with the American military in the 70’s. It was quite a culture shock as Teresa felt that her new environment was in something of a time warp for which she was not prepared. In an effort to integrate they chose to live off the base and this, together with their children attending the local school, helped them settle into life in the UK. Teresa still lives in Suffolk but has her own consultancy business preparing adults and youngsters for the world of work. Interestingly, when returning to the States she now finds the Carolinas are in the time warp and inward looking.

Woolly Worksheep: Much of the time was taken up with assembling the bunting in readiness for its spectacular appearance on the High Street in July.

The wide variety of woolly lovelies carefully made by so many different people will complement the imaginative creations in the shop windows.

Charity Fashion Show: Preparations are well under way for our ‘Winter Warmer’ charity fashion show in conjunction with Edinburgh Woollen Mill. New Arts & Crafts gallery to open at Bridge Farm Barns This July a new Arts & Crafts Gallery is to open at Bridge Farm Barns in Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, the home of the wellknown Corn Craft Gift Shop & Tea Room.

The gallery, to be known as Brett Gallery, will showcase work from East Anglian based artists and crafts people. “Craft has been a passion of mine since beginning Corn Craft back in 1970,� says Win Gage, founder of Corn Craft and owner of Brett Gallery. “It has been a dream of mine to run a gallery which promotes the work of locally based artists and crafts people. I believe in “affordable� art and am therefore looking for pieces and works that fit into this bracket.� Win believes that there has been an increase in interest for such artwork over the past few years as consumers seek affordable, unique pieces for their homes and for gifts. “There has been a general resurgence in arts and crafts with more people making things for themselves and therefore taking an interest in the more “unique�, says Win. “The gallery will very much compliment what we already have at Bridge Farm Barns. Campaign to help children with cancer raises more money An ongoing campaign to raise funds to support children with cancer has broken the £2,500 mark. The Keira Campaign is being supported

by Wardale Williams and its sister company Observatory the Opticians. The optical group launched the campaign with the family of teenager Keira Dixon in March. Keira, 17, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after optometrist Greg Hybel spotted concerning signs during an eye examination at the Wardale Williams practice in Halstead, Essex. Within five days she underwent lifesaving surgery.

In addition to raising money for CLIC Sargent the childhood cancer charity which has Sudbury practice supported Keira and her family since her manager Amanda Skinner diagnoses - the aim of the campaign is to raise with a CLIC Sargent awareness of the importance of having regular collection box. eye examinations. All eight practices in the optical group, including the one in Sudbury, have been supporting the campaign since its launch. Most recently members of staff raised around £350.00 by taking part in the national Wig Wednesday event, when they donned an array of colourful wigs for the day.

Jonathan Foreman, qualified optician and managing director of the Observatory Group, said: “We had great fun taking part in Wig Wednesday and are delighted to have raised even more money for this very important campaign. As well as raising money for a great cause, we are attempting to raise awareness around the importance of having regular eye examinations.

As in the case of Keira eye examinations can spot signs of serious and potentially life-threatening health issues.

“We hope people keep supporting this campaign so we can continue to raise much needed funds to support CLIC Sargent, which does tremendous work supporting families whose lives have been blighted by cancer.”

Hadleigh Hairloom Wedding As most of our clients know, I got married on Saturday 13th June. It was an absolutely magical day filled with smiles and laughter – even the weather gave up its rotten mood by the afternoon, allowing all the celebrations to commence in the dry! Our venue was the beautiful and elegant Leez Priory, Hartford end, which made the perfect backdrop for our day. My purpose now though is to thank all of you for the massive amount of cards, honeymoon donations and gifts so very thoughtfully given to my husband and I.You have all been so amazing and we really are truly touched; Tim (my husband) has been blown away by the wonderful words you have all written.

Many of you have been on the “journey” of the wedding planning with me over about the last 16 months. Sometimes, while I was ordering this, planning that, trying to figure out how this, that or the other would work, it seemed as though it would never get done. Then in stepped some of you, again – lending me things, suggesting ideas, giving me your now-how about the best way to go about things. Even my dress was remade by one of our clients. It almost seemed as if there was nothing that couldn’t be answered by one of you! And before I knew it my Big Day was here!

Now it’s back to reality. Back to the normal tick-tock of everyday. But that’s ok, I have the privilege of seeing all of you for my daily work From the bottom of my heart, thank you, once again, to everybody, for absolutely everything.

Amazing success for Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club

Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics club celebrated its second Anniversary with the clubs Annual Club Competition on Saturday 23rd May. All of the clubs 160 children where invited to take part in the Competition which is the highlight of the Clubs year. The children's ages range from 4 to 14 and they all worked extremely hard to be able to compete in the annual event. In the Novice under 6 age group the medals were awarded to Mia-Jane Neill in third place, Lilly Game in 2nd and Jessica Brightwell in 1st place. Some of the competitors in this age group are only 4 years old, but they performed like true Hadleigh Stars.

In the Novice 6+ age group the medals were awarded to Ella Price in third place, Sasha Doe in 2nd place and Ted Sargeant in 1st place. The amazing thing about this competition is that all the medalists scored exactly the same, and the medals where decided on count back which took into account the floor routine which had several elements that where judged. In the Intermediate under 7 age group the medals were awarded to Piper Regan in 3rd place, Leila Herbig in 2nd place and Ruby Avis in 1st Place. Although these children are still very young they are working at a more advanced level. In the Intermediate under 9 age group the medals were awarded to Amelie Talbot in 3rd place, Larkin Francis in 2nd place and Jasmin Joy in 1st place. This was a tightly contested age group and all of the children did a wonderful job.

In the Intermediate 9+ age group the medals were awarded to 3rd place Sophie Norman, 2nd place Beth Josselyn and 1st place Nadia Day. These are our upcoming gymnasts for elite.

The Elite competition for the more advanced Gymnasts is not age related, so all the Gymnasts regardless of age competed against each other and the 3rd place was awarded to Emily Evans, 2nd place Gabriella Avis and the 1st Place Grace Watkins. All of the Children worked extremely hard towards the competition and performed magnificently on the day however, the overall championship for Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics for 2015 for highest score of the day was awarded to Grace Watkins for a competent and well executed performance.

Head Coach Kelly Mires said we have wonderful support from our Coaches who all work extremely hard our parents who are there for us at all our events and of course our Children who enjoy every second of their club experience.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Barbara Boyd the proprietor of Hadleigh Thrift Shop for her ongoing support and sponsorship of the club. Kelly Mires also added the club has gone from strength to strength and in just two years has established itself as a leading club for children in the Hadleigh Area, we are working at full capacity, with a waiting list for new members. However, Kelly said the good news is that we are starting a new club in September in East Bergholt. This one day event is intended for anyone, who has experienced Bereavement or Loss of any kind or would like to help someone who is experiencing either, whether you are a family member, friend, or professional working closely with others. We ran two of these days in 2014 and those who attended found the day very useful and informative.

The discussion and teaching, on death and other types of loss will be led by Sue Pullen, about whom a brief and relevant background is given below.

There will also be a fair amount of experiential learning in pairs or in groups, where participants are free to share their own experiences and concerns if they wish. It is advised that the day is for people whose experience of Loss or Bereavement is longer than within the last 8 – 10 months.

We are offering these days again in 2015. On Saturday August 8th and Saturday October 3rd, in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh from 10am – 4pm. There will be a maximum of 20 participants per day. There is a small cost of £10 per person towards expenses, however if this is a difficulty and you would really like to attend then please speak to me about it. Drinks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

Sue Pullen is co-ordinator for a community bereavement service in Essex, called Steppingstones. Before that Sue worked in an adult and children’s hospice for 14 years, firstly on the care floor and then in the family support team. Sue also offers bereavement training to interested professionals, local churches and in her local hospice.

Sue writes: ‘I am passionate about this subject and believe this is one of the last taboos. If we can talk and understand about death and the grieving process, something that will surely happen to us all, maybe we can be alongside the bereaved in a meaningful way. I believe that bereavement is a process to be supported not a problem to be solved.’

‘Living With Loss’ If you have experienced ‘bereavement’ or ‘loss’ of any kind, either recently or not so recently, you might find this new group helpful.

‘Living with Loss’ is going to meet on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month, 2.30pm – 4pm . This group will concentrate more on giving people the opportunity to say how they are feeling at that moment in their life, as well as sharing a cuppa and cake. No-one has to say more than they want to, and, of course, each person’s situation is different. However, we hope this will give people the opportunity to be both comforted and encouraged by what others have to say as well as by sharing their own experiences. Loss can encompass different things, such as bereavement, loss of health, loss of friends, loss of pet, loss of job etc.

The dates and venue are: July 8th in St Mary’s Church then from August 12th in ‘The Guildroom’ at The Guildhall (entrance door across the churchyard from St Mary’s) continuing on September 9th, October 14th, November 11th and so on.

We know it can be daunting to join something new where you might not know anyone, but if you think a group like this might help you, we would encourage you to try one meeting and see what you think – there is no obligation to keep coming and we won’t take it personally if you don’t! We would love to welcome you to give it a try.

Dying Matters 23rd May 2015 We are delighted to report that the Dying Matters event in St Mary’s Church on May 23rd was very successful. If you didn’t come because you expected it to be sad, depressing, or overly serious, the reality was very different. Those who came said it was an extremely helpful, well organised and professionally produced event. Words used to describe it were ‘colourful’, ‘upbeat’, ‘interesting’ and ‘very friendly’. There were lots of different stands available with different people and organisations to talk to. The range of exhibitors covered many aspects of ‘end of life care’, ‘what happens when someone dies’, and ‘how can I be an organ donor?’ to name just a few. There were lots of people available to answer those very important questions and much more. The Embroidery exhibition, which was on display, was both beautiful and moving for those who spent time absorbing the words and sentiment conveyed. People were able to come and browse round it all, enjoy refreshments and take home a small bag with the booklet containing information from all the participants and leaflets for other events. One lady said we had ‘changed her life’ because she was worried about how she could put her own plans in place. Spending time talking to various people present helped her to make those plans and now she can live without the worry.

St Mary’s was a fantastic space to use for all the different elements arranged on the day and hopefully the photos here help you to see what the event looked like. Dying Matters was able to use the church in a new way and the space lived up to expectations. St Mary’s is keen for the church building to be used in more innovative and exciting ways, which can only benefit Hadleigh and the surrounding area. Dying Matters was pleased to be one such event and we have plans to put on a bigger and better day for you all next year. Watch this space for more news as the months go by.

The booklet that was produced for the day is now available from the Library, Hadleigh Health Centre, both Hadleigh Funeral Directors, St Mary’s Church, Gotelees and Angel Delights amongst others so please pick up a copy and see what it was all about.

Hadleigh’s Medieval Woollen-Cloth Industry As part of Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015, there will be a morning of talks at St. Mary’s Church on Saturday 25th July (doors open 9.30) by two distinguished Suffolk historians.

Professor Mark Bailey will give ‘An overview of Suffolk’s medieval woollen-cloth industry’ while Dr. Nick Amor will look closer to home with ‘Clothmaking in Hadleigh during the 15th century: the age of William Forthe I’.

The River Stour Trust took their first ever Bat Watch Special evening cruise on the 10th June much to the delight of all their passengers. This very special late cruise left Cornard Lock and meandered up river towards Ballingdon aboard the historic John Constable Lighter. As the crew insured safe passage the guests sat back and enjoyed the lovely sunset and watching hosts of wildlife from the peace of this near silent electrically propelled barge. Included in the ticket price was a glass of wine for everyone and a good selection of nibbles. The trip took the boat past two bat roosts with added bonus of spotting Muntjac deer near the waters edge. All aboard thoroughly enjoyed their evening out.

Friars Hall: Zoo Encounters of a “Strange Kind�

We had snakes, owls, rabbits, an albino hedgehog, two guinea pigs and a bearded dragon. Yes, Friars Hall Nursing Home in Hadleigh became a zoo for the morning on the 13th April and residents loved it. One of our residents was snake charming while another stroked a barn owl whilst the little dog, poodles, ran around with a small knitted toy he had stolen from the sitting room.

Zootastic brought each animal out of its cage and told us about its natural habitat and eating habits before taking it around to each resident in the room to hold if they wanted to. The biggest surprise of the morning was how smooth and cold the snakes were to touch, small and delicate, they looked positively pretty and our residents rose to the challenge of holding them. We at Friars Hall share a vision of hoping our residents engage in meaningful activities and live life to the full. Zootastic helped make that happen.

This is your official invitation to the SESAW Open Day, Fete and Fun Dog Show at midday on 26th July. We look forward to meeting old and new friends – particularly ex-SESAW dogs! There will be displays by ACE Agility, doggy games and 13 classes including a special one for our re-homed canines. Our volunteers love to see how the dogs are progressing, what better time for a get-together and photos? Mum says I must also mention the stalls, games, competitions, wildlife corner, BBQ, homemade food, ice cream van, bouncy castle and music from “Jazz Galore”. Visitors will also see the animals awaiting homes and view entries to our Facebook Photo Competition. All this in just four hours, whatever the weather as most of it will be under marquees and gazebos.

Over £450 was raised at our Bank Holiday Garage Sale which was more like a social occasion, thanks to all the lovely people who attended. Next month I'll tell you about our Autumn fundraising events and animals for rehoming.

Currently Mum is busy feeding the annual influx of wildlife casualties and last week two litters of kittens were born.

After all the painting, repairing and hammering in the garden it is time for me to inspect the Open Day preparations. They have made a good job of the fencing but I know there is still a space that a few can get through, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Thirty percent of us would replace our doors and windows if money were no object, according to a survey carried out across the South East of England by award-winning retailers1 SEHBAC and A&B. A further three quarters of home improvers (74%) would add an extension to their existing property rather than move house. And almost half of us would improve our driveway (49%).

The research, carried out amongst 1000 home improvers, aimed to identify key trends and attitudes towards home improvement expenditure and gauge whether home owners are satisfied with their existing property or have an urge to move. Normand Hornigold from SEHBAC explains the backdrop to the research: “we always seek to identify trends amongst our customer-base but with a significant uplift in recent months of door and window replacements – a rise of almost 25% compared to installations last year – we’re keen to understand why.�

One of the key outcomes of the research surrounds the issue of extending the home. Many of us would first seek to find an affordable way to extend our home versus the upheaval of moving house. Open plan living, kitchen extensions and creating additional ‘lounge’ space all feature at the top of the list of reasons why people want to add extra space to their home. Norman explains: “moving house is still an attractive option for many, but there is a strong desire to improve the home and add additional space. We’ve improved over 250,000 homes in our 40-year trading history and there is no question that people want to open-up their living space. Increasingly external walls are being removed and the desire to create the big family space is highly attractive.�

In terms of paying for home improvements, forty per cent of us would consider finance options to pay for a major home improvement project, fifty per cent of us would prefer to save for it or use other forms of credit such as credit cards or bank loans, only ten per cent would use cash. While windows and doors and home extensions feature at the top of the ‘wish list’ a new driveway was also a popular ‘first choice’ among 20 percent of home owners. Attitudes towards triple glazing were divided – with over half of respondents (54%) saying they would upgrade to triple glazing if there were “clear financial benefits� for doing so. Norman expands: “consumers are still mostly cautious about the benefits of triple glazing versus double glazing – when asked, consumers weren’t clear about the thermal efficiencies and acoustic improvements triple glazing can bring to a property.�

In the research, almost one quarter of respondents (229 respondents - 23%) were owners of properties with conservatories or similar glass extensions. Of those with a conservatory of at least fifteen years old, almost all of the respondents would consider changing the use of the space (197 respondents) and would also consider changing the glass or polycarbonate roof to a solid or tiled roof. “We’re not surprised by this response – conservatories fitted over fifteen years ago are coming to the end of their usable life. Building technology and specifically roof technology has moved on significantly in recent years and the roofs fitted today play a significant role in managing the thermal performance of the overall structure rather than detracting from it. We’re also seeing a significant trend towards roof replacement systems – this is popular amongst home owners seeking to the change the usage of their space and prefer the aesthetics of a vaulted ceiling rather than glass or polycarbonate.�

The Country Threads group have been beavering away once again for St Elizabeth Hospice. The ladies have transformed a large amount of donated materials into useful, attractive gifts to sell and raise money for the charity. Initially the merchandise was on sale at the Hospice’s Open Day last Country Threads Stall at the month but the residue from St Elizabeth Hospice Open Day their stall can now be purchased in the newly refurbished ‘Made with Love shop at the Hospice Day Centre in Ipswich. There was much to celebrate at the family-owned Boxford Suffolk Farms and Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa when three of their employees were presented with Long Service Awards by President of the Suffolk Show, Terry Hunt, at a public ceremony at the Show.

David Whymark started working at Boxford Suffolk Farms 41 years ago at the age of 16. He had no qualifications at all and was dyslexic – although this wasn’t a condition recognised in those days. His first job was cleaning out blackcurrant buckets and he then went on to work in the orchards and packhouse, depending on the season. He is now Workshop Manager which utilises his engineering skills, and he is justifiably proud to have also gained a 2:1 degree in Agriculture from Writtle College at the age of 43, having studied there one day a week for four years. His tutor said to him afterwards “You knew what to do on the farm, and now you know why you do it!” David said “I love the variation of work that I get on this farm over the seasons. I have always respected the family and they respect me and Mrs Peake was always interested in how I was getting on – she took all the youngsters under her wing. I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. David is also “Tractor Correspondent” for BBC Radio Suffolk, and he sends in texts from his tractor whenever there is something interesting to report. He was interviewed by Leslie Dolphin live on Radio Suffolk after the presentation at the Suffolk Show.

As is often the case in this company where more than one member of the family is employed, David’s mother, Eileen, worked for the Peake family as a cook in the kitchen at the Golf Club for 17 years during the 70s and 80s.

Chris Moore is celebrating 36 years of service and also came to work at Hill Farm Boxford for the Peake family straight from school aged 15. He started in the Packhouse making up cardboard boxes and helping to load up the lorries that took the apples to the wholesale markets. He then went on to work in the orchards doing a variety of jobs during the apple and blackcurrant seasons. He later studied a week a month for six months at Otley College and Wisbech, and gained his City and Guilds qualifications in Top and Soft Fruit Management in 1980/83. His role is now Orchard Manager and he oversees from between 24 and 60 staff during the course of the season. Chris said “I love coming to work on the farm as there is always something different and interesting going on, depending on the time of year. It is great to work with such a nice family who are all very approachable - and I am part of a really great team. It is also good to be actively involved with an up and coming business which is constantly growing and improving.”

Kevin King began working on the golf course at Stoke by Nayland for Bill Peake in 1978 at the age of 17, just before the completion of the second championship Constable Course, and a year before Bill died. 37 years later Kevin is Course Manager and still loving the job. He is proud to have played a crucial role in perfecting and maintaining the two championship courses in tip top condition so that they have regularly attracted international televised PGA and European Tour events. Kevin said “I have seen some huge changes at Stoke by Nayland during my 37 years here. It was just a Golf Club when I joined - and since 1999 the Peake family has built the hotel, conference centre, fitness club, spa and country lodges. My work is very varied looking after both courses, the driving range and extensive grounds for the members and I am part of the Senior Management Team. However I like to feel that we still look after our golf members just as well as we did before the expansion. Kevin, whose mother-in-law Joy Howard also worked as Manageress of the original Golf Club for many years, has always lived with his family in a cottage on the golf course, and says “I think in this case I am lucky to have the business in my back yard – the views on my walk to work are hard to beat!”

The family-owned Boxford Group, which incorporates Boxford Suffolk Farms, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa, and Peake Fruit, employs over 250 staff. The company is proud to acknowledge that there are many more of their employees who have worked in the business for well over 10 years - so there should be several more Long Service celebrations to follow in the coming years.

The end is nigh for high street shopping....

The Four Pleasures of Man From being born - to the twilight years There are four pleasures we all have to try Some are for when we are older or when young the fag on the sly!

In your teens you discover young ladies, Not long after the food and the booze, With so many pleasures to choose from not a minute Of time do you lose?

Whilst travelling life’s journey, all pleasures to excess do you take, And when in your twenties and thirties, You can’t see what difference time makes.

The first time you know you’re in trouble, Whilst climbing stairs you puff and you blow And from all the weight you’ve piled on You really are getting quite slow.

Your blood pressure’s high the Doc tells you, Some hard decisions you now have to make.

The fags, the booze and food just have to go, And here, these drugs you must take.

Oh well! You still have the ladies for pleasure...

But life throws at you one small quirk, The one thing you use for satisfaction Well it just seems now not to work!

So now in my twilight years I’m much fitter, To keep healthy I’ll do all I can My advice to you all is moderation!

It’s the largest game of hide ‘n’ seek Britain has ever faced. Where have the high street shops gone and are they coming back? I think I have the answer.

Internet shopping has become a craze and an addiction for many. In the UK, last year we spent £44.96 billion on online shopping alone. This has risen 16.2% within the last six months, reaching to £52.25 billion from January 2015 to June 2015. Now I count myself as a shopa-holic but that’s just a bit too excessive for me!

Now I admit it, I am a culprit of splashing the cash online. How could you not?

Any possible thinkable shop is bound to have a website, and if not, the creation of Esty, Ebay and Amazon have made it virtually impossible for you not to find the desirable item online. We’re all guilty of it – picturing ourselves as the next multi-millionaire as we believe we have invented a great new product, but after researching on the computer, China are ten steps ahead of you and have produced, manufactures and sold over two million of your “unique” idea. (My favourite online product has got to be the portable beach washing machine. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with that?!)

My question to you, now is, why do we still not visit the shops, even when we know what we want? Chloe, 17 explains “My town is pretty intimidating” and I could not agree with her more. Being a teenager we already have a bad name that sits over our head, just because of our age. Even when I’m browsing clothes shops, I know I’m constantly being stalked, watched or whispered about by a shop assistant. The shopping industry needs to learn that just because we’re teenagers doesn’t mean we’re going to steal, rob or create antisocial behaviour. No longer do we feel accepted or wanted in many kinds of shops, purely because of society’s small minded ageism. When I leave to go shopping, I need to take into account what I’m wearing, as I know if I was to wear a hoodie or large coat, retailers will be expecting me to break the law, or even break their shop. For me, this is unacceptable that I can’t wear comfortable clothing without the labelling or fear of the watching eyes.

However, teenagers have a bad label for a reason. Although it may be a small minority, I am aware of those who give us a bad name. Speaking the thoughts of many other young people just like me, Chloe goes on to say “I don't like going into a town, especially on my own, unless it is necessary”. It’s not only the older generation who feel violated by these troublesome teens, even the era of their own generation are somewhat alarmed or frighten by the same group. Policies, for example, making it compulsory for teens to stay on in education till they are 18, are reducing the amount of crime and groups on the streets and shops, however, was this action put into place too late? Because I’m not seeing flocks or herds of money-waving people running back through the glass doors of the street shops.

Instead I seem to be noticing a large increase in charity shops. Those classic shops where you walk into their retro smell of dated fur, old leather and moth balls. But what would Britain be without our faithful charity shops? Timeworn t-shirts, dated diamonds and old school shoes replace the dilapidated, empty shells of unwanted shops. In the past 5 years, there has been a 30% increase in pop-up charity shops among our towns and villages. How do they keep just appearing? It could it have something to do with the fact that full business rates are liable on empty commercial properties that remain unoccupied for three months or more, including lower value properties such as small shops.

But it’s not only land lords who are favouring charity shops, they have now become a trend within younger generations.

Charity shops used to have a stigma attached to the time forgotten clothing of being dirty, grubby and ‘cheap’. And yes, when someone offered to take me “charity shopping” I screwed up my face in a puzzling and confused way.

Charity shops? Cool? Fashionable? Surely not. But oh yes, over-sized army jackets, your Grandad’s jumpers and your passed away Nana Deirdre’s passé pearls have made it onto this year’s cat walk. After researching in a local college, young students like Sophie, 17 describe charity shops as “great, not only are you helping out a charity and inputting to a need, but also this all comes at a fair price!” however, when I asked the same students ‘why do you not use them regularly then?’ a similar, yet familiar pattern occurred. Leaving the house at 8am, arriving back home at 6pm leaves little time for retail therapy students agree. Shops are not equipped to be open the times when their target market are free, so the establishment of the World Wide Web, I believe, was the saviour and destroyer of high street shops. Yes, their business can still run efficiently, by the intake of stock and rent builds up on the tumbleweed rolling across the cold shop floor.

Along with the obvious benefits of convenience and avoiding unpleasant sales assistance, buying online can also end with a lot of wrong sizes and postage payments to refund these catastrophes. Emily, another student says “Shopping in town with your friends is fun, it’s atmospheric and a great way to bond” however, she adds on the end “although this is becoming less of an occurrence now, as Suffolk towns are simply becoming derelict, not even giving us the opportunity to high street shop anymore”.

Is the end nigh for high street shopping?

Bowlers Required For Local Charity Tournament Whether you are a keen bowler or have never played before, a Suffolk bowls tournament organised in aid of charity is on the look-out for players to support the event. Local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre together with Marlborough Bowls Club in Ipswich, have organised a special lawn bowls tournament on Sunday 26th July 2015 to help raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The event which starts at 2.00pm will see teams of 3 players all competing to win the top prize. Karen Finch MD of The Hearing Care Centre said “This event promises to be a fantastic afternoon. It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t played bowls before – it’s all about having fun and raising some money for a brilliant charity”.

Entry to the tournament is £10pp, which also includes a delicious cream tea.

On the day there will also be a target bowls competition, a big prize draw and a working Hearing Dog that you can meet for yourself.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a charity that The Hearing Care Centre work very closely with and provides assistance dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and reduce the isolation of deafness.

An update from HADS Its been a few months since HADS have had a report in the community news because we have been so busy. If you didn't know HADS are the official mascots for the YOTS (Year Of The sheep) events so Bo Peep (Sarah Dawes) and Shawn The Sheep (Trev Clarke) have been attending events giving out chocolate sheep and the fantastic YOTS temporary tattoos. The fun started at the Hadleigh show where Bo Peep and Shawn were by the YOTS tent then they took part in the HADS team of "I'm a sheep get me out of here". On the 31st May was the Bo Peep Picnic with Hadleigh Pool & Leisure and funded by the Thrift charity shop. The day got off to a damp start but this did not stop us from moving all the planned activity's inside the leisure center. With entertainment from Olly the magician, Diamond Lites majorettes, Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band and also Nick Keeble there was something for all ages. Not forgetting the side stalls from various organisations also a spinning and weaving demonstration and also Bo Peep, Shawn the sheep in real life and also balloon models with thanks to VIP balloons. The event couldn't of gone on with out the help of a lot of people, not only from HADS but Hadleigh pool & leisure and also The Thrift shop to thanks to all who took part and helped. A week later Bo Peep & Shawn was seen disco dancing at St Marys Church at the Brownies sheep event & disco which went down quite well.

Then their was the duck and raft race from the scouts, HADS had a sweet stall and also HADS own game of the human fruit machine which was very popular.

It was then HADS turn to take to the raft and of course yes we come last but its the taking part that counts. Well done to all HADS members who helped on the day to raise funds for our projects.

Auditions for our next panto "Robin Hood Of Wolves Wood" written by SarahJane Clarke are taking part at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on Sat 4th July 5pm and Sunday 5th July 4pm. We are looking for cast of all ages but manly adults and if kids are involved we would prefer if the parents can take part too. Personal Thoughts I love my garden, and I love holidays, but if you grow a wide variety of plants as I do there are conflicts. For example if you grow soft fruit, it would be silly to be away when they need picking. Also any Summer bedding or things like dahlias need to be planted before you disappear. If you are growing things in a greenhouse you need to find someone you can trust to look after it when you are away. These reasons mean that we tend to take holidays in mid June or September. This column is being written early as I prepare for a June holiday.

The problem is that as you get older you slow down, and we have found it very challenging getting ready for our holiday. So what do we do next year ? We could stop growing certain things. We do not need to grow vegetables, but we would miss the variety and taste that we get from growing them ourselves. If we did that we would need to find a low labour way of filling the empty space.

We could stop growing dahlias. These are not much work except that they need planting just before we go on holiday, Again what would we put in the space, and they do provide a beautiful show of colour right through to the first hard frost. Are there any other solutions?

I can see three possibilities:(a) Hire some help. (b) Find a family who would be interested in sharing the garden. (c) Move house.

In many ways the hiring idea would be the simplest solution, but the time I would want help would be the time when most jobbing gardeners would already be very busy, and understandably they want customers who will employ them through the year. I have seen 2 lovely gardens go into serious decline as their owners aged, and I do not want to see ours go that way.

The 3 monthly total at the end of May was 96.8 mm (3.8") which is about half of the average figure. The problem was the 2 previous months. My garden is still quite dry. In May the maximum temperature was 22 Cel (72F) which is 3 degreees Cel lower than average, and the minimum temperature was 1 Cel (34F) which is quite typical Hints July is a good month for cutting and drying herbs and lavender for winter use. The lavender should be cut just before the flowers are fully open. It is also a good month for lifting and dividing Irises that have flowered. Select the biggest single rhizomes for replanting, and cut half of the leaves off. Do not plant too deeply. The tops of the rhizomes should be above the soil.

If you grow plants in pots this tends to be the time of the year when growth is vigorous, and roots start to appear out of the bottom of the pots so that repotting is necessary. When re-potting I often use the old pot as a "mould" for filling the new pot. I crock the new pot, put some compost in the bottom, stand the old pot on it, and fill in round the sides. Removing the old pot then leaves a neat hole into which to drop the plant.

The potting compost you buy for your house plants, and containers will feed them if the plants are growing well for 5 to 6 weeks. After this they will need some extra nourishment. There are various ways of providing this. The "modern" way is to use pellets of one of the slow release fertilizers. These will release their contents slowly over the season, so it is a once a year job. The alternatives are soluble fertilizers like Phostrogen and Miraclegro which you dissolve in water and then water the containers. The liquid feed needs repeating every couple of weeks. Ideally different plants require different mixes of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium and the general fertilizers which I have mentioned are a compromise. Chempac make a range of soluble fertilizers blended to suit particular plants for example one for African Violets and a different one for Cacti. These are worth using for your special plants.

On Saturday 9th May 2015 we hosted our Annual Reunion Service and tea party at St Gregory’s 1936 – 2014 Church, Sudbury and were delighted to finally launch our book of memories which includes photos and stories covering the school’s history, from its opening in the 1920’s, through to its transformation into Uplands Middle School in the 1970’s.

For those of us involved in gathering the information, it was an absolute delight to read some of these memories and to share our own! Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (Hadleigh's own charity) Thirty thousand homes in Suffolk live in fuel poverty. On average 353 people in Suffolk,the majority over 65 years of age,die each year as a result of the cold.(Source:Public Health England). The Surviving Winter Appeal was launched to give those in receipt of the "Winter Fuel Payment"the opportunity to transfer all or part of their allowanceto those more in need. Contributions are also welcomed from other organisations and members of the public.

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh(Hadleigh's own Charity) has been formed to provide more localised and practical assistance in addition to the "Winter Fuel Payment".It is designed to contribute to the effective success of the main appeal. Funds will be raised from donations, functions and public collections within the administrative area of Hadleigh Town Council and the eight adjoining villages. Income will only be expended or distributed within the same boundary area. Practical assistance will consist of a comprehensive pack of thermal items as required by individual needs. Additional fuel assistance will be in the form of vouchers redeemable for that purpose and will be paid directly to the fuel supplier by"Surviving Winter in Hadleigh".

Assistance for repairs to heating equipment will be available for emergency repairs,(i.e.out of hours call out charges only), not for replacement or routine maintenance of equipment and will be paid direct to the repairer.

Fishing club nets £250 sporting grant

Hadleigh and District Angling Society has landed a £250 grant to help in the upkeep of the fisheries it owns and leases in Suffolk. The club received the money through UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award programme after being nominated by employee John McAndrew, who is also a member of the angling club’s committee. John, a project manager at the firm’s Colchester offices, said: “The club maintains a number of angling venues for its members with the work being carried out on a voluntary basis and although the society owns several items of equipment, we need a petrol driven hedge trimmer.

“This grant will go towards the purchase of the trimmer, and it will save a lot of man hours which can be better used on other tasks, such as maintenance of the banks and fishing pegs which is very time consuming.”

The Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £10,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to staff at UK Power Networks, which delivers electricity to eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East through its vast infrastructure of overhead power lines, underground cables and substations.

Newton Green Golf Club’s low handicap women have hit a successful streak, although the high handicap members of the Suffolk Cranworth Trophy team has fallen at the first hurdle.

Club champion Alice Barlow has added the Suffolk Girls’ Junior title to her current collection of awards, just beating Newton colleague Ellie The Newton Green Stearn team: Sally Cade, Aldous on count back in Cate Fraser, Lorna Lowe, Rebecca Evans, the 36-hole championship Di Cunningham, Pat Hawkins (captain) event at Ipswich Golf Club. and Jan Doe. Due to school examination commitments, Barlow has been forced to pull out of the Suffolk Ladies team playing in the Eastern Counties Golf Week towards the end of July, although Aldous will still be there to represent Newton. Barlow pulled off a significant win in the club’s home Weston League Division One match with Felixstowe, beating the visitor’s highly-ranked Amanda Norman in the top match of the day. It set Newton on the path to a convincing 4 -1 victory in this scratch team event, and followed the cliff hanger defeat against favourites Ipswich in the opening match. Other winners for Newton against Felixstowe were Aldous, Emily Penfold and Cate Fraser, with Sally Cade the only player to taste defeat.

As lead player, Barlow scored her third successive victory in the Weston as Newton beat Bungay 3 – 2, and look assured of holding their place in the top division. Aldous and Penfold put the team into an unassailable lead, with Fraser and Di Cunningham, who missed a putt on the 18th to go into a playoff hole, just going down in the following matches.

In in the first round of the Suffolk Stearn Trophy (handicaps 12-20), Newton came out victorious 2 -1 at Waldringfield, and now travel to Rookery Park, Lowestoft, in the next round of a competition played off 36 holes.

On this occasion Cade and her partner Jan Doe pulled off the all-important victory against the home club, being two up to Mary Tucker and Margaret Knott. Earlier, Newton’s Laura Lowe and Cate Fraser had completed a comfortable seven and six win against Pat Dougan and Liz Jones, while the visitor’s pairing of Cunningham and Rebecca Evans tasted a similar margin of defeat against Trish Galleway and Liz Smith.

However, the recent run of team success was a different story for the club in the Cranworth Trophy, which has ended on the Newton trophy shelf twice in recent years, with defeat against Haverhill on the neutral Waldringfield venue.

Little Kingfishers launches JUST PLAY; new exclusive soft play sessions funded by Activities Unlimited to allow children with a disability or learning difficulty and their siblings to enjoy soft play! Little Kingfishers soft play centre is a fun, safe and entertaining environment for children up to 10 years.

Learning through play will enhance internal learning, communication skills, build confidence & improve balance & stability and can be used as a treat for good behaviour or break from playing at home. Whilst exploring the four tier frame, children can have fun climbing the ladders or nets, riding the wavy or spiral slides, crawling the tunnel and tubes, swinging on the rope swing or jumping in the ball pit. For babies there’s a separate under 18 month ball pool and sensory soft play pit featuring large soft play toys.

The Centre is designed to be a child’s haven so parents do not have to worry about how much noise or energy their child is giving off, it’s part of the fun. The session is designed to provide a time for parents in similar situations to socialize and support one another whilst the kids are having fun on the play equipment.

We hope these sessions enable children to build confidence, socialize, play and most importantly have fun! Although the sessions are parent supervised, a play activator can be found within the frame monitoring safe play and also engages with the children to be creative and try their hands at in the art & crafts area. Claire Turnbull, Project Manager said ‘This session was introduced as we found a real demand for families who wanted their children to have the same fun experience as others but in an environment where parents do not have to be on tender hooks wondering how their child will react or others judging their child without know their disability which can happen when they attend a public session. A time both parent & child can relax and have fun.

This also creates a time for parents to socialize and share experiences and help support one another. Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Golf Section Invitation Day Thursday, 28th May saw Invitation Day for the Stoke ladies. Each Stoke lady had invited a lady guest from another club to play in the competition on the Gainsborough course.

Almost 50 ladies took part.

Everyone had a great day despite a cold wind when the sun didn’t shine but lovely temperatures when it did. The format was a Stoke members Diana Harris and Nora mix of greensomes and Hutchinson (centre) with their guests stableford scoring. The captures the mood of the day. winning pair were Gill Jones and guest Anita Lewis with 54 points. Second were Sue Spittlehouse and guest Nancy Seabrook with 51 points. Third were Lesley Garnett and guest Ali Mitchell with 50 points on countback. Best front nine were Pamela Randle and guest Carol Perks with 21 points. Best back nine were Sue Cooper and guest Ali Greenaway with 33 points. Nearest the pin for guest on hole 7 was Anita Lewis Nearest the pin for Stoke player on hole 11 was Sue Cooper.

Harris Bowl The Harris Bowl team took to the fairways for their first match of the 2015 season away to Orsett on Tuesday 26th may. The Harris Bowl is played off handicap with a range of handicaps between + to 28. Unfortunately it wasn't the happiest of results with the team going down to a 4/1 defeat. Fran Chandler, receiving 7 shots, went out first against Angie Paton and managed to get to the 17th hole before losing 3/1. Catriona Chaplin, getting a shot on Chris Gordon, came up against a very in form player who had just recently reduced her handicap, lost her match on the par 3 15th 5/3. Lesley Garnett's match also finished on the same hole against Chris Dobson 5/3. This hole also saw the finish of the game between Nora Hutchinson and Glynis Oak with Nora winning 4/3.

So what about Carol Mehrer? She has now finished the 18th hole all square after being 2 down after the 15th hole. It's now down the 1st again with another halve and on to the 2nd extra hole to lose this to a par from her opponent Sue Manson. The matches were played in a great spirit with some excellent golf by both teams.

When Stoke by Nayland Golf Club were drawn away in round five of the ‘Mail on Sunday Classic’, to Ipswich Golf Club at Purdis Heath they knew they faced a really tough fixture. The club had never progressed any further than this round before in the history of the competition so the team was under even more pressure.

Ipswich started really well with two victories against L to R Tim Dickens, Craig Morton, Richard Bland and Tim Ian Collett, Paul Nuttall, Richard Bland Dickens but Paul Nuttall secured the first Stoke point to bring the tie 2-1.

The team now gathered round the eighteenth green to eagerly await the Ian Collett match. They were not disappointed to see Ian’s ball land on the green and the match was all square 2-2. It was now all down to Craig Morton in the final match. After winning the 17th to level the scores Morton found himself on the final green with two putts to secure the victory for Stoke by Nayland. He carefully rolled the ball just past the hole for an easy tap in, much to the delight of the rest of the team. Stoke now await the draw for a history making round six tie.
