The Shelley Centre needs your help! The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding has been nominated to receive a grant of up to £25,000 to celebrate the launch of the Masonic Charitable Foundation and the 300th Anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of England - a total of £3 million will be distributed to 300 charities across the country. The Foundation would like to involve as many people as possible in this, their celebratory year, so they want every nominated charity to advertise and get support from their family, friends, local community, business and press. Voting runs until 31st July 2017 - Simply visit: mcf.org.uk/vote and please vote for The Shelley Centre in the 'Province of Suffolk', more votes means more money!

Golfers on a Suffolk course have witnessed the ultimate – three birdies in a row. It did not occur on the fairways or greens of Newton Green Golf Club, but in one of the two barn owl boxes the nature wise club has installed beside one of its fairways. The three baby little owls were recently gently removed from their box by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, tagged and put back in their nesting place. Martin Brightwell, head greenkeeper, said: “We installed the boxes three years ago, and in the second year in one of them we had four baby barn owls, which were tagged by the trust. “Now we have had three little owls in the same box. The second box has attracted only squirrels, and it is being relocated. “The wildlife trust is hoping it might be able to trace some of our four barn owls from last year. I would be interesting to know how far they have spread.”

There will be supporting eating plans which clients can purchase to help maintain healthy weight loss. All of the 3D Lipo Med treatments are non-invasive and painless. This latest technology involves the removal of body fat and cellulite and also skin tightening treatments. This is done using a combination of ultra sound, radio frequency and cryolipolysis (fat freezing) the results are both immediate and ongoing. This is a great motivational way to improve your appearance and change your lifestyle. Clients can lose pockets of unwanted fat. People who have lost weight are often left with areas with are impossible to target with diet and exercise alone. There is something here for everyone. Photography competition launched to capture the sounds of Suffolk Take a moment to imagine if you couldn’t hear the birds singing, your friends talking in the pub, or your favourite song playing on the radio. This is reality for many people who experience hearing loss and a major new photographic competition is being launched by one of Suffolk’s best-known businesses to raise awareness about the importance of hearing. Titled ‘Sounds of Suffolk’ the competition is being launched as part of Deaf Awareness Week, a national initiative also aimed at highlighting hearing impairment. Award-winning hearing care specialist, The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at The Health Centre, is inviting amateur and professional photographers alike from across the county to enter the competition with pictures which demonstrate the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our beautiful county and may not otherwise be heard by those with hearing loss. “It could be the sea crashing against the shore at Southwold, birds singing at Minsmere, the bells chiming at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral or screaming thrill seekers on a ride at Pleasurewood Hills” says Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre. “In fact any picture which depicts the sounds of the county in a powerful way,” she says. “People with good hearing often don’t realise the impact even mild hearing loss has on the enjoyment of ordinary things around us – we want our competition and the campaign to draw attention to some of the sounds that hard-of-hearing people cannot hear.” Karen explained: “It can take years for some people to decide to do something about their hearing loss - it’s estimated that there over 119,000 people in Suffolk who experience hearing loss, yet so many have yet to do anything about it. We want to get the message across that they really are missing out on life and CAN do something about it.” The Hearing Care Centre, which has 24 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, is putting up a top prize of £250 for the best picture, followed by £100 for second place and an annual subscription to Suffolk Magazine for third place. The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th July 2017. For full information about the competition and the entry details, visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/soundsofsuffolk

On Sunday 28th May 2017, a fund raising night was held at The Brewers Arms, Polstead to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice in memory of my lovely dad, the late David Edward Leeks. We could not have got through my dad's illness without the hospice and we wanted to give something back. The evening was hosted by Shaun and Mitch from the Brewers who kindly provided supper for everyone that took part. Chris and Michelle Warren put together a very entertaining quiz and 15 teams took part. The evening raised a wonderful sum of £555 which was presented to the hospice at the beginning of June by my mum, Paulette Leeks. We would like to thank everyone for their help with the evening, especially The Warrens for organising the evening and The Brewers Arms for their wonderful hospitality. We would also like to thank everyone that took part in the quiz and bought raffle tickets and donated raffle prizes. Thank you all, Christine Morris & Paulette Leeks

A total of 18800 copies of these Community News Magazines are delivered during the first week of each month

A thank you from Phil As those of you who know me will be aware, I was admitted to Ipswich Hospital in April where I was diagnosed with cancer and given the disappointing news that no treatment options are available to me. Whilst in hospital and on my return home I have been showered with cards, beautiful flowers, gifts and visits from well-wishers and friends. I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for these and all the other kind acts from my friends, neighbours and family during my battle with cancer. I also want to say thank you to those who put me on the prayer list at St Mary’s and to those who prayed for me. One of the touching acts of kindness is the money raised by my friends and companions at Hadleigh Swimming Pool some of which I have used on beauty treatments to help me restore my natural loveliness! The thoughtfulness shown is a great comfort to me and lifts up my spirit. I feel very blessed by all the kindness shown in helping me to bear this illness. A special thank you to my wonderful carers, the community health team, my GP Dr Irwin, hospital consultant Dr Mallinson and the team at Ipswich Hospital for your care and compassion during my illness. Also, thank you to my loving family, for your love and for being there for me. Finally, over the past few months you have all made me feel very loved and cared for, I appreciate this and the continuing visits of my friends, neighbours and family very much. Love always Philippa (Phil) Carruthers

Enrichment Creative Writing Four of our KS2 pupils were given the opportunity to join an enrichment Creative Writing day at Hadleigh High School on Tuesday 13 June. They worked on artwork which would be displayed as part of the St Edmundsbury Cathedral “Respect” Art project. Elves and the Shoemaker As part of the “Once upon a Festival” school project at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds children in Owl class were taken along to the theatre on Friday 16 June to see a performance of the Elves and the Shoemaker. Life in Angel Street is never dull in this Suffolk author’s historical novel Margaret Moore, of Sudbury, has written A Street of Secrets, where support among the street's residents is invaluable. Set in the East End of London, Angel Street is home to a variety of characters, who live close together, sharing each other's joys, tears, and lives. Ethel's collision with Stan's bicycle raises eyebrows. Why do Stan's solicitors insist on involving the rent collector, in his affairs? Then there is Rose, who appears to be teaching the vicar some of her old ways. When Churchy and Liz decide to investigate, they find more than they bargained for. The next vicar comes as another shock. Meanwhile young Tony is unwittingly apprenticed to burglars, causing problems for one or two other local residents. The new neighbour is a real eye-opener, and what about the mystery lady who stands watching on the corner? She says: “I wrote this book in the timespan of my childhood because it was such an interesting time. I have created fictional characters which made these streets safe for me and my friends and they were thought of as extended family. Those streets hadn’t escaped the bombs and the problems of rationing were still being tackled, but the attitude always stayed in my memory. Those people you can’t forget. Margaret Moore was born in the East End of London during the war years. Leaving school at the age of 15 with no qualifications she took further education to achieve the skills of a secretary during this career spanning 37 years, she worked as a legal secretary in London, Essex, and Suffolk, retiring in 2006. She began her writing career with a children's book. She lives in Suffolk with husband Norman. They have two sons, two grandsons and two great grandchildren. A Street of Secrets is published by Austin Macauley, please visit www.austinmacauley.com for more information

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I was extremely grateful to have received such a strong mandate from the voters of South Suffolk at the recent general election. Achieving over 60% of the vote, the highest share in the constituency's history, was something I would not have dreamed of. However, I am fully aware that this is only a time limited mandate, and there is now a duty for me to deliver and keep working hard as your Member of Parliament. It looks like I will continue to serve South Suffolk against a national backdrop of seemingly never-ending Westminster drama. The cause of this latest bout of unplanned intrigue was an election result that few had predicted when Theresa May surprised the nation, including myself, in announcing that she would go to the country. But the one lesson I have learned as an MP is that nothing is predictable anymore. And so we face a Hung Parliament, and at the time of writing, talks with the Democratic Unionist Party are progressing about coming to some kind of arrangement for them to support us. I would emphasise that the DUP have previously entered into talks with other Governments who were not sure of their majority, most notably Gordon Brown's Labour Government. If it turns out that they do commit to some kind of agreement it is unlikely to be a full coalition and it does not mean for one minute that we are endorsing all of their views or policies. Rather, it is a fact that the country requires a Government and we have a duty to find a way to provide stability amidst the current uncertainty. Of course nobody wanted this outcome but politics is about facing up to the reality of one's position and dealing with it. That is what we are doing. We must not forget that our country is confronted by a heightened level of terror threat and imminent Brexit negotiations which will be extremely challenging. It is simply not possible to proceed confidently as a people without a Government able to do its core job of stewarding the nation from day to day.

Landguard Fort, Felixstowe by Dave Wood Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents its Annual Day School at Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall on Saturday, 15th July 2017, 10 am. Landguard Fort is situated on a peninsular, opposite Harwich and where the Rivers Stour and Orwell join to flow into the North Sea. It has a long rich history, but its major triumph is the preventing of the last full scale invasion of England by the Dutch on 2nd July 1667 - exactly 350 years ago this summer! By 1900 the Fort was obsolete, until the problem of reliability of large bore breech loading artillery was resolved. The Fort was manned throughout both World Wars, but by the 1950s the rocket age had arrived and in 1956 Coastal Artillery was finally closed down Dave Wood has been involved with Landguard Fort since the 1980s and was present when the first guided tours were carried out. Total cost is just £19 including coffee on arrival and the talk by Dave Wood in the morning - followed by a buffet lunch. In the afternoon a coach will take us to the Landguard Fort for a visit. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort. The coach fare, entry to the Fort and the guided tour are included in the cost. Tea and snacks are available in the Fort or in a nearby beach cafe (cost not included). Suitable footwear should be worn. Early booking is recommended. To book please contact Sue Whiteley - 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

New Business Launches in Sudbury to tackle rural isolation amongst the older generations A new business has launched in Sudbury to help provide a better quality of life and combat rural isolation in later life. 1 Oak Home Care was created by local resident Angel Doyle. Angel identified a real lack of holistic care for older people in the community and set about remedying that. After researching and spending time working with the Care Quality Commission to gain their approval, the company is now active and seeking clients in Sudbury and surrounding areas. With a background in training for the health and social care industry, Angel noticed a need for an organisation to tackle the growing problem of isolation in rural areas. According to Suffolk Age UK, over 15,000 people over the age of 65 in Suffolk are often or always lonely. That’s 1 in 10 people. Angel says: “The team at 1 Oak feel passionately about delivering high quality care and beating isolation. So much of the time we hear of inadequate quality when it comes to the care of our loved ones. With a population of aging people the quality of care delivered is more important now than ever before.” “Although there are many good providers who offer basic care for their clients, we aim to go above and beyond, supporting both the persons needs and wants. What 1 Oak Care is looking to do is offer services that contribute to a much better quality for life. The care we offer to our clients is extended to our staff, we treat staff as if they were our own family and support them in every aspect of their career” 1 Oak has been joined by Theresa Street who has 20 years’ experience as a qualified nurse and brings a wealth of clinical knowledge in many different care settings. Theresa has the same passion and drive to bring highly personalised care to the community as in her words “There is nothing more important than leading a fulfilling life, if we can support that then we consider ourselves privileged to serve the community in a holistic way” Combatting isolation in Sudbury and rural areas is one of the 1 Oak family’s goals. 1 Oak plans include social invitations, accessible events and supporting truly independent living, encompassing real quality of life. 1 Oak Care are offering everything from regular personal & respite care, to home maintenance and organisation. They will also organise day trips and local social events to encourage friendship and prevent loneliness. 1 Oak Care has joined forces with a local hairdresser and a dog walker, both fully DBS checked and they are looking to work with other local businesses, who can contribute to the quality of life of their clients. Pause For Thought

TOW N HOUSE FA RM

'The writing's on the wall!' How many times have we heard that said about a person or a situation? Did you know the phrase originates in the Bible? In the story of Daniel (who later gets up close and personal with lions), there's a King who gets too big for his boots and God gets his attention by showing him a hand writing on the wall. The message is not good news for the king, he doesn't change and the prophecy comes true. There is, however, another occasion where the Bible tells us about the hand of God writing. This time it is Jesus who writes in the dust when a crowd wants to stone to death a woman caught in adultery. He says, “If any of you is without sin, throw the first stone”. As he writes, the crowd melts away. I wonder what he wrote, it isn’t recorded, perhaps he was writing the sins of those holding stones, ready to condemn. Soon there is only the woman and Jesus left. Jesus asks her “Has no-one condemned you?” She replies “No-one”. Jesus, who was perfect and could have thrown the first stone, says “Then neither do I. Go now and leave your life of sin”. Such love and compassion is shown in that small phrase. Maybe as we realise we are not perfect and that Jesus shows us His love and compassion every day, we could show that love and compassion to other imperfect people around us and the world would be a much better place. EACH’s Be a Name in our Frame campaign hailed a success East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) latest campaign to recruit volunteers was a huge success, with over 40 people signing up to add themselves to frames like this one and help the charity in its shops across the region. The good cause relies heavily on volunteers to help in its 23 shops by steaming clothes, sorting through treasured donations, designing window displays and serving customers with a smile. Ian Nicolson, Head of Retail and Trading, said: “We’re really pleased that our recruitment campaign worked so well and captured the imaginations of so many people who stepped forward to donate their time. “We try to maximise the amount of money we raise to fund our children’s hospice services by using volunteers as much as possible and we’re incredibly grateful to them all for their support. To have the help of an additional 40 people is simply excellent news and it will be a huge boost to our shops.” EACH shops have seen help come from people of all ages, from students who volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards through to retired people who want an opportunity to get out of the house and make new friends. The shop in Sudbury also attracted new support, including local resident Sally: “I used to be a regular customer and saw the advert for volunteers in the paper. I have signed up to work all day on Mondays. The other volunteers are so friendly and work so well as a team. I am loving it so far.” For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 75% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service. If you are interested in volunteering for EACH please call 01223 205 183 or visit www.each.org.uk/support-us/volunteering.

The Suffolk-based window, door and conservatory installers have received the prestigious accolade for their consistently high standards of customer service, ethical trading practices and high-quality products, installations and support. “As you SEH BAC managing director John can imagine, we’re absolutely Savage (left) with Don Waterworth thrilled to be named Company of the Year for the South-East by the MWCIA, the trusted voice in consumer protection,” comments John Savage, Managing Director at SEH BAC. “This award further demonstrates our passionate commitment to putting our customers first.” The MWCIA was established by respected chartered building surveyor and engineer, Don Waterworth, who used his expertise in the industry to create an independent database of reputable installers for homeowners. By using a MWCIA-qualified installer, homeowners can rest easy in the knowledge that they are employing a firm that has been thoroughly vetted and operates completely above-board. Don comments: “With a company as large as SEH BAC, it could be easy for standards to slip, but I couldn’t be more impressed with their attitude, their professionalism and, most of all, their dedication to their customers. We’re delighted to name SEH BAC as Company of the Year, and I would recommend them to any homeowner in the area.” Part of Ipswich-based One Group Construction, SEH BAC are one of the largest home improvement firms in the area and in the country. French’s had a good two days in the sun at The Suffolk Show, thank you to all who visited our stand and had tea and cakes with us. Our next day out will be at The Tendring Show on the 8th July, I am keeping my fingers crossed for more good weather. The work experience girls from two local colleges have been helping us with a late spring clean on the farm and after their two weeks placement they are still singing and smiling, which is nice to see. Anyone can apply for a placement with us and it is up to you how many weeks you book in for, you do not have to be of school or college age. There is a lot to learn and do, but being around lovely animals and friendly people can only take you in the right direction, especially those who have low confidence or those who have spare time and would like to find something to do that helps a good cause and keeps them active and fit. We have a mower and trimming/lopping tools, that are waiting for a nice chap to come along and offer us some of their time, we are getting a bit overgrown at the moment and could really do with some help on the gardening side of things, if you have a spare hour or two a week and like pootling around outside, then please give me a call, I would love to hear from you. I would like to thank Sudbury Tesco for giving us a monthly donation of apples and carrots, the horses and donkeys look forward to an apple or carrot in their evening meal. Thanks you Mel and thank you David who drives over and picks them up for us. I am still looking for a home to rent anywhere within a 25 min drive to Hadleigh, somewhere in a quiet or private location suits me well, after living surrounded by an 8 acre wood and fields for the last 11 years, I have been spoilt I know, but there are places out there for a trustworthy tenant with excellent references, that is not a fortune to rent, I just have to find it!! Looking a tough ask at the moment, but I am keeping faith that the perfect property and landlord comes along for me. If you know of somewhere or you have a property and would like a long term tenant, then please give me a call. Our donkeys love the summer, we have 4, Badger is a bit shy and legs it when you get a camera out, silly boy, hence why he is not in the photo. Badger is getting better though, when he first came to French’s he was so very frightened of people, he was always the dot in the background, it was a task and half to put a headcollar on him for the farrier, I have devised a method now where I can catch him quickly and calmly, so he does not get stressed and we do not get mowed down when he tries to get away. I rescued the donkeys from someone who left them in shear neglect, to the point Minstrel the tiny one in the picture could not even walk, because his feet were so long and crippled. The donkeys are a joy to have around and it is funny when there is a spot of rain, they run into the barn for cover, their natural instincts kick in. Donkeys have a different coat to horses, unlike a horse a donkeys coat/fur is not waterproof, the rain soaks through and they suffer in wet conditions and must have access to shelter at all times, otherwise chills and pneumonia can easily develop, if left without sheltered protection. Donkeys have life friends, through research and recordings donkeys feel huge grief and emotional trauma when permanently parted from an already bonded friend. There is heart wrenching videos of donkeys crying in inconsolable grief when separated, or if a mate dies. When I get asked if I would like to re-home one of our donkeys I have to say no, they are a tight team of friends, even if Badger is shy and stands back at times, they all stick together, that is how they will stay and it is lovely to see. If you have some spare time to get involved and possibly learn new fund raising skills that you maybe never knew you had, or show us what you know to work, then get in touch with me, let’s meet and I will introduce you to our animals and the young people who have had confidence problems that we help, we would love to see you see you. Restoration of St Peter’s well-known clock faces is completed Work to restore the prominent clocks on the tower at St Peter’s church in Sudbury town centre was completed this week as craftsmen added the final layer of gilding to the clock faces. This concluding phase brings to a close a restoration project that has taken several years and provides the town with a church clock tower to be proud off. The work has been carried out by a team of experts from Norwich-based Michlmayr which has a national reputation for its horological services. The project was overseen by Sudbury Town Council in collaboration with the Friends of St Peter’s (FOSP), the charity responsible for looking after the 14th century church located in Market Hill. Sudbury Council town clerk Jacqui Howells said: “The Town Council is very pleased that the work to refurbish and repair the clock faces on St Peter’s has now been completed. St Peter’s church is an iconic landmark and many people will have missed the regular chimes of the clock and looking up to check the time. The church and clock tower are an important asset in the town.” FOSP heritage officer Roger Green added: "We have the Town Council to thank for collating the many and varied arrangements that have finally brought us to this point. “The Friends of St Peter’s have offered their contribution towards the cost in memory of the late Tony Wheeler. Those who knew Tony will remember that his house was well supplied with clocks. I hope that the golden faces, glowing in the sunshine, will remind us all of his engaging smile. "The great tower of St Peter's is impossible to ignore and will now appear as even more impressive.” St Peter’s has become established as a hub for events in Sudbury including farmers markets, art exhibitions, music concerts, Thursday’s popular Kettle and Fish café and the annual Christmas tree festival. The venue attracts around 60,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most used redundant churches in the UK. An estimated 6,000 people spent the day in the sunshine on Sunday as visitors piled in to enjoy this year’s Taste of Sudbury. Sixty two stalls filled Market Hill and St Peter’s church selling a whole range of products including a wonderful selection of cooked food and street food. Prosecco and cold beer was flowing from bars provided by Stock and Bailey, The Long Melford Swan and The Duck and Coot and everyone enjoyed music by The Three Chordettes on the slabs in front of St Peters’s. Cooking demonstrations took place all day in the kitchen theatre marquee with a line-up of some of Suffolk’s very best chefs including Scott Taylor from the ICE Cookery Experience, James Carn of The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds, Oliver Macmillan from The Long Melford Swan and Lee Fernandez of Rafi’s Spicebox and over six hundred Dim Sums were cooked (and eaten!) on the KSL Kitchen Stand inside the church. This year the event was organised by award winning local business Suffolk Market Events owned by Justine Paul, whose aim was to deliver a top quality event with a real focus on locality and quality of product. She said: “We are thrilled at how well yesterday’s event went. The weather was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better turnout. I really wanted to see Sudbury stamped on the Foodie Map and I believe, wholeheartedly, that the success of yesterday has well and truly achieved this. Yesterday really was Sudbury at its best. ’ A number of traders at the event reported significant increases in sales compared to 2016 and all the stallholders were delighted with the day. Justine continued: “It has been so Mark David with a chef from the lovely today to receive constant Long Melford Swan messages full of fantastically positive feedback from traders, members of the public, sponsors and chefs and we would like to say a huge thank you to all those who participated, attended and helped on the day including Go Start Community Transport, Gryphon First Aid, a group of fabulous volunteers and the town wardens. It is a pleasure to be able to provide such a fantastic, top quality event with no admission charge and I would like to thank all our sponsors, including our headline sponsor, The Long Melford Swan, for helping to make this possible.” Work will soon be starting on next year’s Taste of Sudbury and gaining more sponsorship will be one of the priorities so if any local businesses would like to get involved, please do contactSuffolk Market Events on 07704 627973

SKy Watch

The Sun’s Twin We are now in full Summer and as of the 23rd of this month we begin to get darker skies again - THANKFULLY! The Sun: Date Sunrise Sunset 7/7 04.45 21.16 15/7 04.53 21.09 31/7 05.16 20.47. The Moon New 23rd, Full 9th. Venus Blazes its pure-white best in the pre-dawn skies at magnitude -4.2. Jupiter Is still in the constellation of Virgo and shining at magnitude -2 and cannot be mistaken. A pair of modest 10x50 binoculars will reveal the 4 major moons of the planet, and you can watch them over the course of a few hours in real time as they circle their parent. Saturn Saturn is shining at magnitude 0.2 low-down in the evening sky. On July 7th, it will be located just 3 degrees from the Moon should you need an celestial 'sign post'. The Sun’s Twin A recent report suggests that virtually all stars are born with at least one sibling companion. This is very evident to the casual observer on any given night as you look through binoculars or even small telescopes at almost any of the stars above. Stars are formed from nebulae, which are clouds composed of vast amounts of hydrogen and helium gas. Over time, these clouds begin to 'collapse' in on themselves and with a little help from gravity, the wheels are set in motion for the start of stellar formation. This is a very simplistic version of events and the subject for an article within itself. If stars form close enough together, their mutual gravitational attraction will keep them as a pair forever, but if there is a large separation, in distance as they form, they can drift apart. For hundreds of years we believed our Sun was unique in that it was the perfect size and on its own in space, thus allowing our solar system to be stable and so life was allowed to flourish. But now, we believe that we have located our Sun's sister and her name is HD 162826 and is located just 110 light years away and appears in the constellation of Hercules and has a magnitude of 6.46, meaning a pair of binoculars will be needed at least. So far we have not located any Planets, but terrestrial planets (rocky worlds like Earth, Mars, Mercury and Venus) may well exist. Comparison With The Sun The star is 1.15 times the mass of our Sun and has a radius of 1.11 times that of our star. The surface temperature's are only off by 432 deg, with our Sun's surface at 5,504 deg and HD 162826's temperature of 5,936 deg. Our Sun is the elder of the sisters at 4.6 billion years old compared to HD 162826's being 4.5 billion years of age. So if you get the chance, pop out and look at the Sun's sister. Until next month, Clear Skies ! Any questions, please contact me at: neilnorman03@gmail.com. Neil Norman, F.R.A.S.

Take a moment I was standing under our Mystery Tree the other day (called as such as it has remained unidentified – even by several professional gardener friends) and was struck by the intense sound of buzzing. At this time of year, the, currently anonymous tree, blooms with soft cloud-like sprays of tiny white flowers and all manner of insects are drawn to it. Standing under the low hanging branches, the drone of bees busy collecting pollen was really, quite loud and for a moment I just stood still and listened. It struck me as odd, that a completely natural sound stood out so vividly to be unusual and it occurred to me that it was perhaps a symptom of the way we live our lives today. We are all so busy and have around us more technology than we probably ever thought we could dream of, that it’s hardly any wonder nature doesn’t get much of a look in. The same could be said for our fleeting surface glances at things instead of really looking and seeing what’s not at first apparent. Recently, I have started taking photographs of the insects I come across in the garden. Normally something that would be unseen amongst the grass or swatted off by a lazy hand; close-up these critters are often fascinating. Some are conventionally beautiful: the butterflies and dragonflies for certain. Others could rival the CGI aliens and monsters from films with their strange markings, horns, tufts and spikes. Others are rather sweet. The Rosemary Leaf beetle I have nick-named the Disco beetle because of its shiny purple, gold and green casements. I am becoming an advocate of trying to take some time each day to slow down, stop and take time to really see, hear and feel what’s around instead of letting the cacophony of modern every-day life bombard the senses. I urge you to do the same; the rewards may be simple but they are worth it. I am of course not just talking about the garden (although I believe being in nature to be very beneficial) but in all areas of life. Listen to the person talking to you without having half an eye on your Twitter stream. Notice the food you chew; the smell, the taste, the texture instead of wolfing it down without noticing in front of the TV. Every part of life can be experienced at a superficial or more detailed level and the more you make the most of it, the more you get out of it.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Jonathan Barker gave an interesting account of how to turn an empty 6 acre field into a food forest. Inspired from an early age by his grandad Jonathan has always enjoyed working in the garden. Having worked for 10 years making videos of peoples weddings, Jonathan seized the opportunity to buy a 6 acre field in Wickham Bishops in Essex. Martin Crawford a pioneer in the forest system of cultivation, had written a book which Jonathan used as a guide for transforming his field, which initially contained just 1 oak tree. In 2010, aided by his Dad 1,000 saplings were planted, these had to be protected from rabbit damage and mulched to encourage growth. Ponds were dug in the lowest part of the field, plants that need the most attention were planted in the middle of the site, while fruit, and nut trees were nearer the perimeter. A veg. patch was ploughed with a friends Massey Ferguson tractor, also a children's play area was created. Fruit cages were erected to protect the soft fruit from bird damage. The aim is to encourage as much diversity as possible, raptures, buzzards, skylarks, frogs (control the slugs), badgers (they love the sweetcorn), polecats (quite vicious), foxes (control rabbits) all visit the site. Spare produce is given away. Willow is grown which produces some income and 2 to 3 acres of woodland produce firewood. The Essex Botanical Society identified 101 species of wildflowers. Beehives are also on the site. Jonathan only has a small shed, the long term plan is for an education centre, so visiting groups can be made more comfortable. Jonathan invited us to his "Maypole Forest Garden" we shall be adding that to next years' programme. The competition - One rose bloom was won by Kate Banks, 2nd Maggie Miller and 3rd Julia Wild. Our next competition in August is 3 tomatoes on a plate. We also have plants and produce for sale, look forward to seeing you in August. Our coach trip to Pensthorpe in July has been cancelled due to lack of support.

In 1436 William Clopton, Lord of Toppesfield Manor, granted land for a Guildhall and market to the Town of Hadleigh, the rent to be one red rose per annum. In 1983 Gene Clopton discovered that rent was 500 years in arrears. The people of Hadleigh duly paid up, but because of their past history of payment, Gene demanded that the rent be paid in advance henceforth and this has been done ever since. On Trinity Sunday each year during the morning service at Long Melford Church, the Mayor of Hadleigh puts a single red rose on the tomb of Sir William Clopton, which lies at the back of Long Melford Holy Trinity Church, as rent payable for the Town Hall Complex. This is considered to be the oldest payment of rent anywhere in the country. The photograph shows Hadleigh Town Mayor, Councillor Yvonne Free, accompanied by her Deputy, Councillor Bill Wilson, the Rector of Holy Trinity Church Rev’d. Matthew Lawson and the Chairman of the Long Melford Parish Council, Councillor Liz Malvisi at this year’s service.

Down to Earth ...with Dave No sooner do I complain about the very dry weather we are getting than the heavens opened up and we get more rain in a couple of days than we have had in a month. Still at least in only poured at the very end of the Hadleigh Show. This as usual was a very enjoyable day out with I suspect record crowds. Back home in the garden the sleeping hedgehog has moved on. Some telltale hedgehog dirt’s had been seen so a saucer of cat food was put down at night. This was eaten every night but the telltale little footprints were not evident. Not having an expensive motion sensitive camera, a cunning plan was hatched to see if it was a cat or hedgehog eating the food. A large oven tray was borrowed from the kitchen, this was filled with a level layer of sand and the saucer of cat food placed in the middle. In the morning all of the food had as usual gone with very clear cat saw prints very visible in the sand. So no visiting hedgehog. Needless to say we have now stopped feeding the neighbourhood cats. I will still keep a look out for the little feller when on my regular nightly slug hunts and if I do see him he will quickly get fed. The nest box is still there if he or she decides to use it again this winter. The open gardens season is now in full swing with the chance to see what other gardeners are up to. I managed to visit most of them in Hadleigh and Nayland. The title of hidden gardens is very true as lots of them are truly hidden away and would not be seen were it not for the open gardens day. Size is not important with some of the best being the smallest. I was however quite envious of the various gardens that backed onto the rivers both in Nayland and in Hadleigh. To have access to the river Stour from your back garden for a canoe or a boat must be fantastic. Though I do worry a little about flooding. I was most impressed with the garden in Nayland that had a robot lawnmower for the two level lawn with a docking bay on each level. Now is a good time to take Fuschia cuttings. Lily beetles are a bit of a problem at this time of year with the bright red adults easy to spot and squash. Be careful as if disturbed they will drop to the ground and lie on their back and can be difficult to spot. The larvae live underneath the leaves and cover themselves in their own excreta. Really nasty dirty little things. Use gloves and a bowl of soapy water for their disposal. Spraying is possible but this can be harmful to bees. Picking off by hand is the best answer. If your hedges are like mine and in need of a trim please make sure before starting that there are no birds still nesting, perhaps with a second brood. It is actually illegal to disturb them. That’s all for this time, Dave

Magdalen Road Flower Beds When Babergh stopped planting flower beds in Hadleigh a small group of volunteers undertook to plant out and look after the beds in Magdalen Road. This has been very successful except for one plot which was used as a short cut. This spring it was planted with wild flower seeds and as you can see there is an amazing display of red, blue, white and yellow wild flowers. An added bonus is that it provides food for bees. Anyone wishing to join the volunteers should contact Jane Haylock at the Idler

Thank goodness for a bit of peace and quiet in the kitchen, now all the wildlife has returned to it’s natural habitat. Mind you, it’s hectic outside with people running around in all directions, preparing for our Open Day and Fun Dog Show 12-4pm on Sunday 30th July. Mum says the theme should be silver as we are celebrating twenty five years of animal rescue at Leavenheath.I’ve heard talk of games, competitions, face painting, a vintage corner, cakes, bbq, music and an ice cream van for the humans. Meanwhile there are fifteen dog show classes plus specials and a fun scurry all afternoon and don’t forget to meet the animals awaiting new loving homes too. As Mum has lots of enquiries to follow up after Open Day we will be closed during August, except by appointment or for emergencies. Just a quick run down of our other events: 1st July, Summer Dance at Assington Village Hall, see us at the Vintage Rally, Melford Hall 1st and 2nd July, Shelley Fun Dog Show on 8th July and the Long Melford Street Fair on 9th July – details on our website. Must go now as one of my favourite humans has just arrived. Young Henry is ready to go out for a walk with my Lhasa pal Beau and me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Physiotherapy are a team of experienced and dynamic health care professionals, aiming to provide you with the highest level of patient care. Additionally, our team take part in various sporting activities and this month Director and Physiotherapist Will is cycling across the Dolomites in Italy culminating in the gruelling 137km Maratona Dolomites race. Will has been cycling since 2012. What began as a form of exercise with a friend, trying to protect joints from old injuries has become more competitive which is evident by their decision to test their fitness in the hills of Europe. Training for this feat started in September 2016 and has involved 4 weekly sessions ranging from 45 minutes on turbo trainers to 3-4 hr rides on the road trying to find steep hills to cycle up and down to condition their legs in preparation. However, a sports massage with Kerry every few weeks has helped ease tired muscles. And finally, Will’s dietary tips and preparation….try not to drink too many glasses of wine the night before! Have a good bowl of porridge with a handful of blueberries for breakfast. Expresso is a must before setting off with a pint of water and regular 20 minute food intake if out on a ride for longer than 2 hours. Although sticky, dates are his favourite snack along the way and plenty of fluid post ride to avoid dehydration. Stay tuned to next month’s Hadleigh Community News to see how Will has got on or follow us on Facebook to keep an eye on their progress!

East Anglian Garden Group Visit to Spencers Garden, Great Yeldham Twenty EAGG members enjoyed a perfect day for exploring the garden at Spencers in early June. To greet us by the car park was a group of young Suffolk Red Polls destined to grow the new herd and sampling the lush surroundings. Our tour began with meeting delightful Lynne Bogie for a brief history of the house and garden. The current house was built by Lady Anne Spencer in 1760. You can read more of it's history on line. Lynne, the current owner, has been there for only 6 years and was new to gardening when she arrived, and we admired her enthusiasm and determination to make the garden work. Walking to the one and a half acre walled garden, Lynne explained that this area retains the grid system laid out in Georgian times and some of the beds are being systematically restored. Huge lavender 'hedges', large borders of not uncommon herbaceous planting, and masses of rose bushes, including a circular crossing point surrounded by Rose 'Graham Thomas', make impressive walkways, and keep 5 gardeners very busy. We were impressed with the old brick built bothy which appeared to have a very large upper storey. This holds a huge tank of (tons of) rain which still supplies of water for the garden, as Lynne demonstrated by opening a huge water pipe into the garden sink. The pretty 18th century greenhouse is under restoration, replacing the woodwork and re-using the original small panes of glass. Lynne took us on a woodland walk beyond the walled garden, where there are two impressive badger setts where the family come and watch. Luckily, no mention was made of badger threats to the walled garden. The woodland extends with the river Colne forming, when we were there, a quiet stream in a deep cutting. Lynne told us she had begun to make designs to plant the banks, but hastily withdrew when it became evident that the water was inclined to rise in torrents at times of the year, making exciting bathing opportunities. The woodland walk lead us to the restored coach house for tea and cakes served by family members and Lynne joined us to share wonderful photos of the garden in all seasons through her years there. Our next outing will be on July15th, when we will be visiting Cobbs Hall at Great Saxham, which has 2 acres of lawns, colourful herbaceous borders, ornamental trees and lily ponds. There is a parterre, folly, walled kitchen garden, fernery and stumpery, cascade water features and a pretty courtyard. Afterwards we will call in to Paugers Nursery,Depden, where they have over 1500 different varieties of plants, many of them are ‘hard to find’ and not easily available elsewhere, so we will no doubt be filling our cars with exciting new plants. Details of this can be found, as usual, on the website. I am hoping to have some very exciting news soon, regarding our celebrity speaker for 2018, so watch this space!! New members are always welcome, and non- members can join us for visits and meetings for a small charge. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson My lovely neighbours turn up every so often with some home-smoked salmon – yum! They are also responsible for holding a Boxing Day barbecue, which prompted my husband to turn up in shorts and Hawaiian shirt. (Trust me, it doesn’t take much!) I also have some lovely friends who introduced me to pulled pork. As the temperatures climb, do take the opportunity to get together with friends and neighbours and have a barbie! Pulled Pork Ingredients: Boneless shoulder of pork (about 2½ kg) 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp pepper 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tsp salt 2 medium mugfuls of cider 1 mugful of a good smoky barbecue sauce Soft white rolls, Coleslaw Method 1. Mix the paprika, ground cumin, pepper, brown sugar and salt. Rub over the pork. 2. Put the pork in a big casserole dish, skin-side up, and pour in the cider. Cover with a lid and cook at 150C/130C fan/gas 2 for anywhere between 4 and 8 hours until falling apart. Check every few hours in case it gets dry – if it does, add another mugful of cider. 3. Take it out of the oven and put the meat in a big dish, leaving the liquid in the casserole. Cut the skin off, then shred the meat using two forks. Ditch any fatty bits, and skim any excess fat off the surface of the sauce. 4. Add a mugful of a good smoky BBQ sauce to the casserole, mix it in, then ladle some into a bowl for dipping. Put the pulled pork back in the casserole with the juices so it stays moist. Season to taste. Can be made one day ahead. 5. Serve in soft white rolls with some coleslaw and the bowl of juices on the side for dipping the sandwich while you’re eating.

The Whoosh Effect! So the latest diet started really well – a great loss in the first week (this is mostly water and happens on any diet plan) then it settled down to a steady amount each week but, suddenly it stops. You’ve not cheated, you’ve drunk plenty of water and you’ve done some exercise. What is going on..? We tend to believe that weight loss happens immediately - we had a really good day yesterday so we should be lighter, thinner today, shouldn’t we? Of course, it’s not that straightforward. This is where it’s important to keep your nerve if the scales don’t show what you’re expecting. As you burn fat, those fat cells can fill with water, sometimes making those areas feel ‘squishy’. You may not be aware of it. This can last for just a few days or even up to a few weeks – not great for motivation. Then, just as suddenly the body expels the water and the scales and your measurements play catch up! You get your result after all! Phew!! Interestingly it seems to happen the same in reverse – you get away with overindulging for a few days then, wham, you feel horrible & fat and bloaty!! If you need help with your weight loss, when you choose Cambridge Weight Plan, you’ll have the benefit of 1-2-1 meetings with your own consultant who has personal experience of the programme, understands how you’ll feel along the way and has helped countless people achieve their dream. Cycling is an activity for the whole community. Our goal is to promote cycling in Hadleigh and we welcome young and old, experienced cyclists and beginners. At least once a week we run popular club rides through the countryside around Hadleigh and beyond. For a second year we have organised a 6 week programme supporting women to 'Get Back on Your Bike', we have a thriving Junior Club and our members take part in the many off and on-road cycling events in Suffolk. We are also proud of our competitive cyclists who represent HCC in races, time trials and Mud, Sweat and Gears. Our biggest contribution to putting Hadleigh on the cycling map is our annual sportive 'The Gayford Flyer' (10th September). If you want to develop your cycling skills, meet other cyclists or just put on your Lycra and fly - you are welcome to join us. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. The Club membership is £10 for individuals and £30 for family membership. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers We’ve decided, in response to a number of requests, that July’s walk on Saturday 15th will be a long one starting and finishing at Hadleigh. The 11.5 mile route will start along the railway walk to Hook Lane then Layham, Shelley, Fox Farm, Sodom & Gomorrah, Pintins, Holton Hall, Great Wenham, The Wenham Queen, Little Wenham, The Woodlands and back to Hadleigh via the Railway Walk. Although a little longer than usual, the walk is a very interesting one and we will set a modest pace making a couple of rest stops (the second at the Wenham Queen) along the way. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 and we hope to be back in Hadleigh around 3pm. By the time this notice goes to press we will not have completed our usual recce of the route so please check the web site for any last minute updates Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658.

SMART Alarms Why buy an ordinary burglar alarm when you can have a smart home alarm system? Smart alarms are the burglar alarm system of today. They do everything an ordinary burglar alarm system can do, and a lot more besides. Like a traditional home alarm, they can be set and unset by entering a unique user code in the alarm keypad or simply presenting a key fob to the keypad. They can also be programmed to sound the external siren, contact an alarm receiving centre, or alert you when activated, if required. So what is the smart part? Amongst many other great features, the motion detectors in a smart alarm can have a camera built in which takes a sequence of snap shots when the alarm is activated and sends those images instantly to your smartphone. Let’s assume for a moment that, like us, you sometimes forget things; did I lock the back door, did I switch the alarm on …. you know the feeling. A smart alarm eliminates that worry. Not sure if you’ve switched your alarm on? NO PROBLEM, check the secure app on your smart phone and, if it’s not, set and unset independently with a simple swipe motion. Not got a smart phone? No problem. A smart alarm can still be set and unset just like any ordinary intruder alarm system. In fact, we can make it ultrasimple and provide a small handheld remote to enable you to set/unset at the click of a button, just as you do with remote central locking on your car. Concerned you’ll forget to set? We can program your smart alarm to auto set at a pre-determined time of your choice – say 9.15 to 17:15 (Mon-Fri) when everyone should be out of the house at school, at work or ….. ahem ….. the golf course!? What happens if your burglar alarm goes off? Do you think your neighbours go round and check your home? Not according to a recent survey. Now what ….? You’re at work – perhaps 30 minutes away or away on holiday. Is it just a false alarm or is your house being torn apart by intruders? Unfortunately, with an ordinary alarm, you will never know and only find out when you get home. Wouldn’t it be great to get alarm notifications instantly via your smart phone and, at the tap of a button, get visual verification of what’s actually going on inside your house? That’s the power of the smart alarm! Abacus Fire and Security Ltd; the Hadleigh based company you can reply on for all of your intruder, fire, access control and CCTV needs. News from Whatfield CEVCP School We are all looking forward to Summer activities, especially as the children have been working so hard showing off their knowledge in Phonics and SATs tests recently. We are always thrilled when pupils make good progress and enjoy celebrating it with them. Summer is the time when we can also enjoy a whole range of sporting activities, and we have thoroughly enjoyed both the local tournaments and Suffolk wide festivals. Whatfield were thrilled to win the Hadleigh cricket tournament recently, as our team was made up from pupils across years 3-6. They suggest a lot of their success as down to taking the mascot, ‘Barney Bear’. Pupils also took part in quad kids, where they enjoyed the experience of athletics in the company of hundreds of other athletes from all across South Suffolk. They were expected to race 75m and 600m, as well as take part in a standing jump, and throwing a vortex howler! As part of our focus on the arts, we have all enjoyed a piece of dance theatre called ‘Where the river runs’ which had a fantastic environmental message, and was a delightful depiction of exploration and adventure. Pupils were particularly impressed with the strength and athleticism of the dancers, since they had only just been working on gymnastics and dance with our coach, Kelly Mires. We also travelled to the Theatre Royal, to enjoy ‘The elves and the shoemaker’, which was a lovely retelling of a traditional tale.

We were very proud to be invited to see the race horses at Darley Stud, and pupils had a fantastic visit, enjoying the opportunity to look around the immaculate stables, and the kind hospitality of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who provided a delicious lunch for the children. We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to for the rest of the term, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you will be made very welcome. Please do telephone 01473 823309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us and take a tour. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Dear friends, we have another ask of you, and your dear families, to help us receive a massive boost to our funding. It won’t cost, all we want is for you to click! We have been nominated as one of the charities that will receive money from the Freemasons Charitable Foundation that is launched this year in celebration of the 300th anniversary of The United Grand Lodge of England. 300 charitable organisations across the country will share in a cool ÂŁ3 million pounds! The public has to get involved. It’s a bit like Britain’s Got Talent actually so please help us to receive the maximum possible prize in this wonderfully generous charity talent competition: Voting starts 12th June until 31st July 2017. mcf.org.uk/vote please vote for The Shelley Centre in the ‘Province of Suffolk’ MORE VOTES = MORE MONEY! The grant money we have applied for would be used to excavate and then re surface the ponies’ yard at the back of the stable buildings. Over the years it has been badly undermined by rabbits, the surface is either a thick wet sea of gloopy mud or a hard and uncomfortable clay bake. The horses and ponies come in here to await their work, or to shelter from the elements; it is one of our most useful enclosures. I never see it of course, but I hear the maintenance team worrying about how to keep it safe for the live herd. Knowing them, they will have more items on the wish list too, so please get voting and ask your friends to do the same! Just to remind us what this is all about, look at Kay-Kay, who is nearly blind, enjoying her time on Bob with her team of helpers beside her. My pony colleagues and I help many such riders here at The Shelley Centre and we don’t come cheap! Next month I shall have pictures of the Shelley Show for you, and of course, the Dog Show, which takes place on July 8th, after I shall have gone to press! Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We took up our stall in the Market Square in June with our old neighbours pleased to see us again. We were not seeking to raise funds but to distribute our new panic alarm fobs. These can be held on a key ring, attached to a belt or clothing. They are simple to operate with a very audible alarm with a light for use in darkness. There are many situations that can arise where the elderly or the disabled need to raise assistance: i.e. a trip either at home or outdoors, sudden illness, certainly for a mechanical fault, the possibilities seem endless. An alarm fob could prove invaluable to get assistance quickly. The major charities have a system which gives immediate contact to an operator for which there is a fee. The fob we are offering is to draw attention that help is required from those within the immediate vicinity and completely free. This supplements our Surviving Winter in Hadleigh existence as first responders to those in fuel difficulty or any other required assistance to get through a bitter, possibly fatal cold spell. On our first venture of issuing the emergency fobs we have distributed seventeen plus one in the care of Hadleigh Mobility in the Market Place for a demonstration and which can be collected from us. When next we are in the market on Friday we will have twenty fobs available. There is NO CHARGE to those OVER 65 years of age and no longer in employment but a small donation is welcome from those that can afford to do so. For those disabled there is NO age limit or donation requested, young or old. Please do not be too independent to have an alarm fob as you never know whether your voice can summon help far enough. Were you at Sudbury Girls High School any time in the 1960’s or early 1970’s up to its closure to become the Middle School? If so, you may be interested in our ‘1960’s Plus Grand Reunion’ to be held on Saturday September 23rd from 7.00 p.m. in the Long Melford Village Hall. This is an opportunity to come along and share memories and maybe meet up with old friends not seen in so many years. We’re asking people to book ahead, with a payment of ÂŁ10, which should cover the cost of the hall and a finger buffet. We’ll be holding a raffle on the night to cover any extra costs. We hope that everyone will bring along items of memorabilia, and that, during the following year we’ll be able to produce a second volume of memories of the school – the first was produced by the Old Students’ Association a couple of years ago. The OSA meets twice a year, and we’re aware that there are a few year groups who have their own reunions from time to time. This is a one off extra special event. If you’re interested then contact Pam Cram (nee Collett): 86 Pontardawe Road, Clydach, Swansea, SA6 5PA 01792 845942 or pcram@headweb.co.uk Please pass on the information to anyone you know who could be interested, but remember it’s ‘first come first served’ due to limitation of space in the hall! I can provide the full information and booking form either by post or electronically for you to pass on. Look forward to seeing a full hall and hearing all those memories – good, bad, amusing or poignant

News from Kersey School Owls Owls are now excitedly preparing for their end of year play, which is Roald Dahl's version of The Three Little Pigs. Our learning in English is also going to be based around this well known tale. This half term, we have visited Hollow Trees and learned all about how it runs as a business; we found out a lot about the day to day running of the farm and its shop. Owls are looking forward to celebrating all of their learning with the County Music Service at Hadleigh United Reformed Church; everyone has learnt the clarinet and we are becoming experts with some rather tricky tunes! Badgers In Badgers class we have been developing our ICT skills by coding our own stories based on the legend of Baba Yaga. We have also been coding machinery as well as creating the front of our board games on Paint and Word. We have been focusing on the topic of Russia this half term and have been busy making our own scrap books at home. In our Art lesson we have used images of Russian gymnasts to create a piece of art where it looks like the athlete is flying through the air. We are also really excited to be starting our Roman topic next term, which includes a trip to Colchester Castle. Hedgehogs This half term Hedgehogs class are learning about mini-beasts. We have been on a mini-beast hunt to help us learn about their features and habitats. We are looking forward to finding more mini-beasts Monday when we go pond dipping at Bridges Farm. In Literacy we have been researching different mini-beasts and writing our own non-fiction books using headings and sub-headings. This week we have focused on spiders and found out some very interesting and unusual facts. In art we have made clay mini-beasts and a giant hugry caterpillar from papier mache. During our PE sessions we are busy practising for our upcoming sports day. Squirrels Squirrels have had a busy start back at school learning all about Space. We have enjoyed creating alien wanted posters, made ourselves into astronauts and created lists of items we would take to the moon. In PE we have been busy practising ready for our upcoming sports day. We have enjoyed throwing javelins and learning how to jump. We are looking forward to our visits to Bridge's Farm in the next few weeks. If you would like to know more about Kersey school or would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email: admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website: www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

England World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst was the special guest at the Millfield at their annual Celebrity Dinner and the 250 guests present also enjoyed a surprise visit from former Arsenal and England star Ian Wright. Comedian John Stiles, son of another football legend Nobby Stiles led the entertainment of the guests who enjoyed an excellent three course meal provided by Jamie Lee Smith Caterers within the Big Marquee provided by All Season Marquees. Ian Wright was a guest of event sponsors Shared Access the company responsible for installing new floodlights at the Millfield. This was in return for Hadleigh United FC granting Shared Access a 25 year lease on the site of a new Telecoms mast. Club Chairman Rolf Beggerow said," The Telecoms mast is up but at the time of writing it is not yet on line with any mobile operators. However the new floodlights installed by Abacus Lighting are now fully operational. The new lights operate from six towers each with 3 modern downward pointing lamps. There will be 3 winners emanating from this project. The town of Hadleigh with improved mobile phone coverage, the residents close to the Millfield who will notice very little light spillage when the lights are on and of course Hadleigh United FC who have received the benefit of a 45K investment in the new floodlights together with 25 years maintenance from Abacus. I would like to acknowledge the support we have received from the Hadleigh Town Council, in dealing with all the legal matters that arose in relation to this project”

One 11 year old former Hadleigh Youth team player Ollie Woods could not believe it when his mother and grandmother Lesley Turner told him that he was going to meet Sir Geoff Hurst in Hadleigh. Ollie had been given a 1966 World Cup Program by his late grandfather and the Club arranged for Ollie to meet Sir Geoff at the Millfield and for Sir Geoff to sign the program. Sir Geoff commented that the program was in a remarkably good condition and one the best kept he had seen. Rolf Beggerow said “When Lesley first approached the Club with such a touching story about Ollie’s treasured program and it’s connection to his grandfather, we were only too pleased to make the arrangements with Sir Geoff. Now Ollie has a personalised autograph in the program from Sir Geoff, the only man ever to score a hat-trick in a world cup final. Ollie should be able to live on the memory of his meeting and the pictures with Sir Geoff for many years to come”.

Jimmy Whittle honoured at Newton Green Newton Green Golf Club has honoured a former stalwart on the same day members played for a new trophy in his name. Builder Jimmy Whittle was the lynch pin behind a number of club house expansion phases following Newton’s development from nine to 18 holes more than a quarter of a century ago. He also took a leading role in assisting in the development of the extended course, and served a term as club captain. Following his passing last year, his son Paul, a former single handicap player at the club, presented a trophy in his father’s honour. Now, members have competed for the Jimmy Whittle trophy in a pairs competition. At the same time, the club has renamed one of the rooms built by Jimmy. It has been remodelled as a stud bar and named Jimmy’s Room. Jimmy’s widow, Mary, along with Paul, and club men’s captain Gareth Evans, raised a toast under the sign honouring the former club stalwart. The first winner of the Jimmy Whittle Trophy with 45 Stableford points was Kevin Levett and Nick Smith, followed by Mick Gronland and John Sherman 44, Harry Wordley and Ben Tawell 43, and Craig Rollinson and Paul Pengelly 42.

When golfer Russell Lydford transports equipment to his local club, he has the ultimate in buggy transport. With his clubs in the back, the Newton Green Golf Club member turns heads when driving his immaculate, half-ton 1946 Chevrolet pick-up into the car park. The sight, if the not roar of the truck’s 3.6 litre, straight six engine, which gives 18 miles to the gallon, can hardly be ignored. The Sudbury heating and plumbing engineer is an enthusiastic restorer of old vehicles - with a particular love in recent times of bringing back old American models to their gleaming, showroom prime. His 1946 Chevy, which was registered in Kansas in 1946, will be among around 50 vintage vehicles which will be part of a show at the golf club to celebrate its 110th birthday on August 6. The event is a curtain raiser for the club’s annual golf week. Russell bought the pick-up from its English owner three years ago, when it had been damaged by a fire in the back, and also had both its front and rear ends stoved in. With his own hands and a bit of specialist help, he set about carrying out a complete restoration of the engine, chassis and bodywork, emphasising: “Some people say they have restored something themselves, but very few do it without some outside input from specialists. I make sure I learn from them, and know I can do it on my own next time.” Now, he proudly displays his Chevy at hot rod and other specialist shows, including those of the National Street Rod Association, of which he is a member. He also once fully restored a now sold 1934 Sunbeam, which he turned into a hot rod, but found it “too scary to race!” Russell also owns a 1952 Sunbeam 500cc motorbike, which he restored, and carried out similar work to a now sold on “beaten up” 1952 Chevrolet pick-up and a 1963 Ford Consul Capri.
