Panto returns to Hadleigh, Oh yes it does...

Yes HADS is back in action, with a panto called ‘The Hadleigh Cinderella’ written by its new Chairman Trev Clarke. Cinders (who lives up Highlands Road) is locked away in her house under the guard of the two ugly sisters, Apple and Core, and her ‘wicked’ step mother. Poor Cinders is left at home all day to do all the chores, but wait, Buttons is on hand to cheer up poor Cinders and her cat Puddles with some singing and dancing, and some humour too. While all this is happening the Prince (who lives at Priory Hall) is on the look out for a date and decides to hold a Ball at the Town Hall to try and get himself a girlfriend, with help from his servants Chas & Dave.

Will Cinders be invited to the Ball? Will the prince find himself a girlfriend? And will this panto have a happy ending?

The Panto is on the 15th, 16th and 17th of January 2015 at 7:30pm with a matinee performance on 17th at 2pm. The panto is being held at St Marys Church, which is being transformed into a performance area and is a show NOT to be missed. During the show the Porch Project will be holding a raffle to raise money for its funding. St Marys Church wants to start using its building for more community projects so this is the ideal chance for the building to be used for such an event.

Adult tickets are £5 each and Children £3.50, and are available to buy from Keith Avis Newsagents on the High St, Hadleigh.

Hadleigh Farmers 175th Ball Raises Funds for Local Charities To celebrate their 175th anniversary year, Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association (HFAA) held a Charity Ball at The Talbooth in September. 160 members and guests enjoyed an evening of excellent food, wine and dancing, combined with a silent charity auction which raised in excess of £6,000 for their chosen charities, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute and The East Anglian Chris Partridge presenting the Cheque to Rosie Western Air Ambulance.

One of their more recent social events was the annual Winter Drinks party, where Chris Partridge, Chairman of HFAA was pleased to present Rosie Western, Chairman of the Suffolk branch of RABI, with a cheque for over £3,200. A separate presentation to East Anglian Air Ambulance will take place at the beginning of January at the Clubs first winter meeting.

Chris Partridge said “We were delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile cause as RABI and would like to thank the sponsors of the Charity Ball whose support combined with the generosity of the guests helped to raise such a significant amount”.

What a wonderful afternoon we had in Hadleigh for our Lighting Up. Peppa Pig made her appearance early so she could see as many children as possible and she was besieged all afternoon – who would have thought the Town Clerk and Cllr Jan Byrne would have spent three hours acting as her minder!

Santa and his reindeer were also kept busy all afternoon seeing lots of children with their Christmas wish lists. Santa did say that he was looking forward to putting his feet up by the fire in Lapland later that evening!

The fair and street stalls all put on a good display and were also very busy. There was plenty to do and lots to eat and drink – for the adults as well as the children. When the time came for Peppa Pig to make her way to the stage the Market Place was packed with people and making a path for her to get through with the Mayor wasn’t easy! When she finally made it to the stage she got rather excited and had the Mayor in a bear hug followed by switching all the lights off rather than the tree lights on – but she did get there eventually and the tree in the Market Place looks lovely with its new lights on.

Hadleigh Town Council hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and wish all the residents and traders of Hadleigh a very Happy and Prosperous 2015.

One of the biggest quiz events in Ipswich has managed to continue raising a staggering amount of money for a local, national and international charities.

Local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre organised their 8th Charity Quiz Night to help raise money for Ipswich based charity FIND (Families in Need), who support local families and individuals affected by poverty. Over 200 people filled the main hall at Greshams Social Club in Ipswich, for a festive night of difficult trivia, and light-hearted camaraderie with the aim to raise as much money as possible. Every guest also brought a food donation along with them to go towards the charity’s winter food bank appeal, which amounted to two shopping trolley’s worth.

The Hearing Care Centre, which looks after peoples’ hearing across East Anglia, managed to raise over £1,300 on the night, taking the amount of money they’ve raised at their annual quiz nights to over £11,500.00.

Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, said, “Our supporters continue to amaze me. Raising this amount of money time after time is just incredible. I must thank everyone who came along, as well as our sponsors whom without them we wouldn’t have such as successful event.”

FIND handed out more than 3,000 food parcels in 2013, along with a further 1,140 Christmas hampers.

The Tower of London - A History of England with Roger Mannion Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures starting on Thursday 22nd January 2015, in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm Following the 1066 Norman invasion William the Conqueror established the Tower in 1078 as his London stronghold. From then until the present time the Tower of London has been intimately involved with the story of English History, it has been a fortress, palace, prison, armoury, place of execution, zoo and mint. It has served successive monarchs from 1078 until the present time. The Tower has been at the epicentre of dramatic, bloody and frequently cruel events for almost a thousand years.

We shall examine the changes to the Tower and the famous inmates, from the Bishop of Durham in 1101 to the future Queen Elizabeth I, Thomas Moore, Anne Boleyn and Jane Grey, Samuel Pepys, Oliver Cromwell, Rudolf Hess and the Kray twins to name but a few. Also in the light of recent discoveries we will review the fate of the Princes in the Tower.

Roger Mannion has been a tutor for the WEA for nearly 11 years. He is a retired naval officer with a strong interest in history and has formally trained to teach adults. Roger’s family has a tradition of observing the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower, his grandfather, his father, he himself and now his son have all been part of this historic event which has continued at the same time nightly for the last 700 years.

Waste – oh no it’s not At Orchard Barn we try to re-use everything – nothing is thrown away. A great example of this is our composting.

We have numerous deadwood screen ‘bins’ like the ones in the photo and while one is being filled there is always another to be emptied and its contents put to good use.

Amazingly, up to 30% of household rubbish in Suffolk could be composted, rather than going to landfill, where it can’t break down and produces toxic gases. Home or community composting saves you money and brings environmental benefits.

We’ve found the best compost comes from a mixture of approx. 50% “green” and 50% “brown” organic material. “Greens” break down quickly and, in household waste, are fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, weeds. “Browns” add air pockets and make a healthy mix, and are chopped up woody stems, cardboard and paper eg toilet roll tubes, junk mail scrunched, shredded paper, egg boxes. So, for every bucket full of garden waste, we add the same amount of woody material. At the Barn we use also an activator – urine in sawdust, but that may not be to everyone’s liking, however, it does help the heap to heat up! Turning the compost to introduce air also speeds up the process and keeps us warm during winter months.

Chernobyl Childrens Life Line In November we held our Christmas themed Chocolate Bingo and succeeded in raising over 1600.00 for the Charity, all of which will stay in Mid Suffolk to be spent on the 2015 visit. It was great to see not only our regular supporters but more and more new faces who have been told about this event by their friends and family. Remember, in our Charity Shop in Coddenham Road, Needham Market we take or can collect clean old clothing, curtains, sheets + the like, also non saleable books, which adds to charity funds via recycling collection agency. Good saleable books are of course sold in our shop as are children’s toys and an excellent range of clothing and other items.

We recently made a request for people to send a Shoe box to each of the children that came in the summer 2014 visit or who are supported directly by this Link and we are delighted that the response means that each child will now receive an unexpected but very welcome present from England. The usual present at Christmas for these children is a packet of sweets. Although the sender will be bearing the cost of sending the items they do know exactly who the present is going to and receive details of the child, their family and photographs. A very big thank you to everyone who has taken part in this part of our program.

We are now concentrating on organising the Group Visit for 2015 and as always are trying to collect good quality second hand clothing as the children will arrive with nothing other than the clothes they are wearing. Clothing can be left at our Charity Shop or if needed we can arrange collection. We are very aware that there are now more Charitable causes than ever all needing support. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports us, you may think you only do a little but without you we could not survive.

Thank You from the Brendan Oakes Trust and the Alison Fracella Research Trust A very big thank you to everyone who supported us in so many ways at our Quiz Night on November 29th helping to make the occasion such a success.

The Ansell Centre was once again packed for the event and everyone said that the evening was really enjoyable and great fun. The ploughman’s supper was a big hit with everyone too! On the night, after expenses, we raised an amazing £1,466 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

A huge thank you to Keith Avis Printers for once again printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Many thanks also to the many local businesses and people who were so generous in their donations of the many, fantastic raffle prizes. Special thanks to Sue and Roy for all their help and to Amber for running the raffle so well. A big thank you to Mark David for his donation of a full day course at the Cooking Experience, to Hadleigh Tyres and to Greggs Bakers for their donation of the bread rolls for the supper.

With tickets already being reserved for next year we feel sure our joint quiz is set become an annual event!

An exciting new club is opening it's doors to young people in Hadleigh to encourage them to get in touch with their creative side. The Drama Zone will run on Wednesdays between 4 and 5:30pm at the Ansell Community Centre.

Would you like to work with others to write and create your own play?

Do you want to try your hand at something creative in a supportive environment?

The Drama Zone will give young people the opportunity to work as part of a team, develop performance skills, increase self confidence and have creativity nurtured. Participants will be encouraged to devise their own performances, and workshops will include not only drama but script writing, prop, set and costume design and making.

The club will open on Wednesday 14th January with a free taster session and will run during the term time. Young people aged from 8 are welcome to attend.

Hadleigh Orchestra Thank to everybody who supported our Christmas Concert – one of our very best - and thank you for being so enthusiastic. As a result of your generosity, after deduction of expenses, we have been able to send a cheque for £150. to the L’Arche community in Ipswich. They do a wonderful work in creating places of belonging for people with learning disabilities. We were once again most grateful to Father Peter and the Catholic Church for the opportunity giving our concert in St. Jospeh’s. It was Father Peter’s request that instead of making our usual donation to the church we should give it to the L’Arche community.

Happy New Year to my loyal readers. Just before Christmas I was stirring in my four poster in the early morning. The wireless had just popped into life (in fact it is a Sony Digicube alarm clock which I have had since the mid 70s when it was state of the art). None other than the dulcet tones of Jane Haylock of The Idler was speaking to the County about Hadleigh. It sounded as if she was next to me. I popped into see Jane as I was concerned lest she had been broadcasting in her housecoat. Apparently, it is going to be the year of the sheep in Hadleigh so keep an eye on how you can participate. Sad news reached me that Ann Stephenson (who used to own Odds and Ends) passed away in December. Even in adversity Ann had a sense of humour and she was a real local character.

I happened to mention pickled walnuts in one of my despatches. Many of you will know John Sargeant “Busky� of Polstead who tells me that he pickles his own. We were able to fly to Toronto and a limousine was waiting to motor us the two hours to Niagara. You can see me on board the Hornblower (formerly Maid of the Mist) where I got soaked as we went right up to the Falls.

New Social Housing in Lavenham In the next few months eight Suffolk Housing Society properties, which are being built on the old Armorex site, will be ready to let and priority for them will be given to people with a connection to Lavenham. Panto returns to Hadleigh, Oh yes it does....

I caught up with the Prince and his servants Chas and Dave who were in the Eight Bells having a drink and asked them.

So Prince you have lots of money, why don't you have a girlfriend already? Prince: Well this is why I'm holding a ball at the Town Hall to find someone. Chas: He's been on Match.com for years but i dont think the profile picture helps. Dave: Maybe hes after too much from a lady, on his profile it says 'must like to do housework'.

Chas & Dave - why do you like working for the prince? Chas: Well its gotta be better than working in the council. Dave: Oh I do like that idea, sounds like easy money to me. Prince: Please don't leave me lads, I need you to help me get ready for my ball in January.

What do you like to get up to on your days off? Chas: I love a walk down the railway walk to relax and meet new people on the way. Dave: Yes, I'm looking for a new girlfriend too but all I meet along the railway walk is dogs.

The Panto is on the 15th, 16th and 17th of January 2015 at 7:30pm with a matinee performance on 17th at 2pm. The panto is being held at St Marys church, which is being transformed into a performance area and is a show NOT to be missed. Adult tickets are £5 each and Children £3.50, and are available to buy from Keith Avis newsagents on the High St, Hadleigh. During the show the Porch Project will be holding a raffle to raise money for its funding. St Marys Church wants to start using its building for more community projects so this is the ideal chance for the building to be used for such an event.

On the 12th December HADS held a talent show called Hadleighs Got Talent. Ours winners will be performing at the Saturday performance of the panto. Callum Lloyd is performing at the 2pm show on the Saturday and Megs Martin is performing at the 7:30pm show. Congratulations to the winners and also all who took part in the show, we look forward to seeing our winners performing at the show.

Pre -Christmas weeks the days are so full with events and demands on our time,so the Players were so delighted with the full audiences for the three performances of SNOW WHITE and.......who gave us their support.

The happy faces of children and adults, some still singing the Smarty Pants song as they said goodbyes to the cast was rewarding. Any success was in the main a result of a combination of talents and cooperation...technical expertise, musicality, design, direction and performance. As a drama group we gained so much from the 9 new cast members, new musicians, and new back stage and front of house support. Like the old story of “The Enormous Turnip” a lot more can be acheived working together. As a result £400.00 will now be donated to the Rosa Simon Music Fund.

What Juicy Got For Christmas ....A story of young love, heartache and finally betrayal Juicy started out her in life as a birthday present for a farmer’s son. At first, life for Juicy was great; lots of attention and plenty of food.

As the months passed by, the son’s eye was turned towards a girl in his class at school. Time to look after Juicy became short, just a bucket of feed morning and night, with hardly any time to scratch her back or have some chit chat. Juicy took comfort in food and just ate and ate until she looked more like a hippopotamus than a Suffolk Black pig!

At this stage I was asked if I would take the pig and keep it on the farm trail.

‘OK’ I said, ‘but only if she is pregnant’. A young boar was given the job. He tried his best, but by this time Juicy was so huge the poor little chap wasn’t able to oblige. So it was soon after this failed love affair that Juicy came to live at Hollow Trees Farm.

If you came on the Farm Trail during the summer, you probably wouldn't have noticed a big old black sow sulking in her little sty. However, a diet of fresh air and exercise was prescribed. By Christmas Juicy was looking quite trim and ready for the next “man” in her life. This time I purchased a prize pig from a fellow farmer. The boar had had plenty of experience and had been saved from the butcher’s knife as my farmer colleague was selling up .Originally; this particular boar had been destined for the abattoir.

Juicy is enjoying the company and I believe that love has finally blossomed. So is it happy ever after? No chance! Once the boar has completed his task his journey to the abattoir will be resumed!

Damage to your car? Get those scuffs and scrapes seen to now As winter takes hold now is the time to check for damage on cars that may have been picked up over the past few months. Many drivers will have minor bodywork damage, scuffs and scrapes waiting to be repaired. It’s Winter so don’t forget to STRETCH! Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health.

Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance.

HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained.

Here we are, January again and time for New Year resolutions. I’ve heard talk of dieting, stopping bad habits (I hope that doesn’t apply to me hoarding things) and new health plans.

One of our supporters is already keeping fit for a very special reason. Dave Carr is training for the London Marathon in April to raise money for SESAW. Dave hopes to complete the 26.2 miles in 4 hours, as he did in Edinburgh four years ago. On a sadder note Boff, our resident tailless tabby who often greeted visitors, died in November.

A gentleman among cats, Boff was respected by all, including us canines, and will be greatly missed. I’ve just been out with lovely Debbie who responded to my plea for new helpers a few months ago, but we still need dog walkers and animal carers. Please leave a message if you can spare one morning a week, or would like to help with fundraising in your area. We have many animals awaiting new homes including a deaf dog named Angel and Harvey the whippet, her constant companion. Next time I’ll tell you more about the animals but now I’ve run out of time. NSPCC Charity Event We would like to thank everyone involved with our charity auction evening for the NSPCC on 21st November, it was a huge success with a packed auction room at the Town Hall. We tripled what we thought we would raise overall from the night so we are thrilled that this money will now go to this great and worthy charity. It is fitting, therefore, that the whole community of Hadleigh has been recognised for its extraordinarily compassionate response to Rosa's death by being given a special recognition award at the 2014 Stars of Suffolk (please see photo) run by the East Anglian Daily Times. Thanks to the kindness of Andrew Frolish, the St. Mary's Primary School head teacher, the award currently resides in the reception area of the School for all to see. The sponsors of the award, Flagship Housing Association, also contributed £1000 to the Fund.

Which brings me onto my main message for this month: we need to start making serious inroads into the Fund as soon as possible to realise its aim of spreading Rosa's love of music and dancing to as many local children as possible. With a range of concerts being organised in the name of the Fund over the next 12 months, it is clear that it will be around for a while - and we have money to spend on music initiatives!

So, in a reverse Bob Geldof mode (and without any profanities), please will more local schools, churches, playgroups, registered child minders and indeed private music teachers put in bids, please? So give us your bids and let's make laughter through music a reality for all our children!

Microsoft has a reportedly 100 billion dollar Tel.fortune we can equate that to the age of the universe at some 14 billion years old.

We then have to understand the real size of the universe and wonder whether there could be other life out there. The speed of sound is around 761.2 mph we can easily imagine that when the jets that take us on holiday travel at around 500 mph. With the Moon only 238,000 miles away we can comprehend that distance and speed whether flying there in a jumbo jet or a rocket ship. When it comes to the speed of light it is much more difficult for us to comprehend. The sun is some 92million miles from earth, with the speed of light at 671million mph it takes just 8 minutes for the light of the sun to reach the earth. So all big numbers to understand in miles per hour and the time it takes for speed and light to travel.

Now to put the likelihood of other life forms in the universe having the ability to reach us here on earth here is the cast iron fact why that is highly unlikely.

So we can work out the speed of light per second and just how many times that could flash around our world in a second. But from the very interesting recent TV science programs run by the very easy to understand Brian Cox he stated that we can now measure the Universe in terms of light speed to be some 46 billion LIGHT YEARS across. I don’t think many of us can comprehend that distance. So if the universe is only 14 billion years old and we supposedly came into being from an exploding rock in space with maybe just one droplet of water within it, then it seems extremely unlikely that any other form of life could be in advanced of us here on earth. Couple this will our knowledge that it would take an estimated 75,000 years to travel at the speeds we currently understand to reach the nearest planet where some kind of life might exist then UFO’s having been seen is exactly zero.

One of our unique strengths is our wonderful imagination, NASA recently; said all they have tried to achieve was very much based on what they saw on the TV in the 1960’s with the very entertaining Star Trek series. We all enjoy some of those space travel type films. In the same way there have probably been more Wild West films made in story form than ever actually happened in real life. So our imaginations can take us to some very interesting places.

Rendlesham is easy to explain. About 6 years ago I paid £5 and went on a walk with a group into the forest as it became dark with a local forest ranger.

He said first of all he did not believe in the sighting but was happy to show us the location. Off the road we went into the forest with our torches. The clearing where the supposedly UFO landed was exactly like the other parts of the forest with absolutely nothing to see that was different. We could see through the trees the distant Orford lighthouse which was one of the possible explanations to what was supposedly seen that night. As we came out of the wood in the dark there was a single house on the road and we were introduced to an old woman with a torch with a dog and two goats on a lead who again supposedly had seen something that night, that to me summed up the whole episode.

Here is the challenge to all those Rendlesham believers, bring to me anyone who claims to have been involved and I will with my Jeremy Paxman style of interviewing and a lie detecting machine get to the truth. I expect to be told of course that the remaining witnesses have previously been abducted by aliens.

One last important point with regards to UFO’s. I understand just about all the so called UFO sightings took place during the time only of the cold war from 1950 for the following about 50 years. Since the ending of the cold war I have not read of heard of any further sightings. Probably the very best proof that there has never been any real UFO sightings is since the advent of the instant mobile phone camera facility there has never been another sighting.

What an amazing year we have had at tut mill, the highlight had to be seeing 18 months of hard work come to fruition with the wheel turning for the first time in approximately 100 years on November 11th, many thanks to Bill Griffiths, Chris Hulcoop, Paul Cuthbert, Mark Barnard, Callum Davies, George de Lara-Bell Gary Barnes and Kegan Jay for all the hands on work with the wheel. Since November 11th the remaining 7 buckets have now been replaced and it looks amazing, we still have some plates to fix to the broken and cracked Starts, the Starts are the arms that hold the buckets. Needham Fabrications have kindly made some plates the same shape as the Starts that straddle the break and sandwich the Start adding strength and reinforcement that will hold them together and prevent further damage.

Santa’s workshop was so well attended, due to the incredible demand we added two additional days and a further two sessions, lots of thanks to all those that attended and supported the event and a huge thank you to those that helped with the running of Santa’s workshop, without doubt our Elves could have an amazing career ahead, working with children, you made it a fantastic event and a very memorable Christmas for so many.

Jasper and Ollie the two donkies kindly lent to us by Cliff, Pat and Chris at Cobwebs were a great hit and seemed to enjoy the visit to Kersey Mill as much as the children did. Pictured are some of the elves with Jasper and Ollie.

Looking forward to 2015, work will commence hopefully in January on the Pit Wheel, the Pit Wheels is attached to the Water Wheel by a shaft and as the water wheel turns so does the pit wheel, this in is the main cog that transfers the power from the water wheel to the machinery within the mill.

The Pit Wheel has a large cast iron rim approximately 16 feet in diameter with wooden spokes and wooden teeth, we need to repair the spokes that are rotten and replace the teeth with kiln dried oak (purchased with the profits from Santa’s workshop), a precise job as each tooth needs to be individually produced to fit the rim and existing metal cogs attached to the shaft that eventually will turn the stones and the cogs that sit above the pit wheel and provide power to the machinery on the upper floors including the sack hoist.

If there are any carpenters that would like to volunteer to help with this task we would be delighted to hear from you. We have had several people who over the last year have come forward and sponsored a tooth for £50, each tooth will be numbered and a plaque adjacent will record the sponsor’s name, thank you if you are one of those that have already done so and for those wishing to please do get in touch. We hope in the new year to install some health and safety measures within the wheel house, we need to fit a large amount of railings and guard rails around the wheel and repair the various trip hazards on the floor, once these are in place we hope to have another open day and invite the public in to see the wheel turning.

Mozzarella Snowpeople Hello and a very Happy New Year!

This little piece of cuisine art should have been with you in time to furnish the Christmas table. Unfortunately, I was snowed under (no pun intended!) with seasonal activities and missed the deadline.

Fortunately, they didn’t melt, and making

by Sarah Thompson them in January will help to drive away those winter blues.

Ingredients/Equipment Mozzarella (you can get two snowpeople out of a 200g ball); Melon baller, small knife, small spoon. (Don’t worry if you don’t have the first item); Cocktail sticks – helpful but not essential; Peppercorns (for eyes and buttons); Left over fruit and vegetables (Just raid the fridge) Method The method is straightforward but requires some patience. The finished product is well worth the effort.

Using a melon baller or small spoon, carve out two small snowball shapes from the mozzarella.

Snap a cocktail stick in half, but be careful of the jagged edges. Use one half to spear the two snowballs together. This helps your snowman to balance. If you don’t have any cocktail sticks, just lay the little fella down on a flat surface while you work on his outfit. Carefully place two peppercorns for the eyes, adding extra for the buttons if you like. Using a fruit knife, bring out the creative spirit in you and carve miniature nose, mouth, accessories (scarf and hat) from any colourful fruit. I found small tomatoes and coloured peppers particularly helpful, and made the dearest tiny green scarf by slicing a strip off a bit of leftover cabbage. You could also experiment with herbs or ground spices to create hair and accessories.

It’s a time for Houses to get together and for different years to work together as a team. Lots of popular songs were performed such as Rather Be by Clean Bandit and Ghost by Ella Henderson. Teachers and students alike came together to create an event that was described as highly enjoyable and everybody thought that it was a good show. First place went to Guthrum with Duncan runners up and Morris in third.

Toppesfield, Oswald and Ansell missed getting on the podium but still gave a very good show.

Christmas Extravaganza!

This year’s Christmas concert included a magical mix of high quality drama fused with a fine selection of pop hits from the majestic Soul Band, virtuous duos and solo performances. The drama featured an abridged version of Charles Dickens’ classic a ‘Christmas Carol’ interspersed with a hilarious twist on the ‘twelve days of Christmas’. The fantastic flute choir played beautifully as usual. The show also included many choral arrangements with some perennial Christmas favourites. This was a fabulous opportunity for students to show case their talents.

Miss Macey said, ‘the school is trying something new; we are revolutionising the Christmas concert!’ She felt it would ‘kick-start’ everyone’s Christmas. It was also the last opportunity for our Year 11 students to display their talent, which they did brilliantly. All agreed this new format was a great success.

Language Assistants Hadleigh High School is very lucky to have a French and a German assistant.

They are foreign students who are here to help students learn languages and also to teach them about French and German culture. They want to be teachers and have come to gain experience and to improve their English skills.

Pupil leadership Recently our school has been preparing for a new group of pupil leaders such as the house prefects and the sports prefects. Every year a new group of budding young leaders go through the Hadleigh High School leadership programme which is carefully led by Mrs Calvino. The Year 10 students are preparing for the new prefect roles in the New Year, there are 2 Head Boys, Andrew Halls and Matthew Smith, and 2 Head Girls, Ellena Cook and Jessica Simmons. There are other roles as well such as: Prefect Leader and Prefect.

There are 18 Prefects and 8 Prefect Leaders. Every one of the Prefects and Prefect Leaders will be working closely with the Head Boys and Head Girls to improve the school.

The new Year 9 prefects are taking over the roles of the now Year 10 prefects.

They are keen to get started on their new duties and make a difference to the school. We spoke to Oscar Farrow (Sports Prefect) who said that he is going to encourage the all the years to participate in more sports around school. His is also aiming to get the participation of inter-form competitions up to a record high.

Science club Pupils in Years 5 and 6 from the Hadleigh school pyramid were invited to take part in an after-school Science Club at Hadleigh High School, run by Mrs King.

She said that it was a great success. There were places for 30 students and 80 applied!

‘Wear a woolly day’ to Support Save the Children On Friday 12th December, students were invited to wear a woolly jumper in place of the usual compulsory school sweatshirt. In order to do this they had to pay a fee of £1.

The money would then go to a charity as chosen by the form 7O. Year 7 decided the event would be held in aid of Save the Children. The year council assisted with collecting money. The Year 7 head of year, Miss Clarke, said ‘It was a fun day enjoyed by all!’ There were some wonderful and unique jumpers worn by both students and staff.

South Suffolk Badminton Champions Over the past four weeks Hadleigh High School have been competing in the South Suffolk Badminton League. As one of the smallest schools to enter the league and for the first time Hadleigh students showed their wealth of skill and determination by entering more teams into the leagues than anyone else. In the U14 boys’ league students from Hadleigh High's Y7 and Y8 competed 20

against students from Y9 with both our A and B team picking up excellent wins, but just finishing outside of the qualification zone for the county finals.

Our U14 girls’ teams again made from younger students in Y8 battled fearless against bigger and older opposition. Our B team finished third in their league of 7 teams and just missed out on a semi-final place. While our A team proved to be too strong for many teams they did pick up a single loss placing them second in their league but a semi-final place was achieved. The girls battled hard in their semi-final against EBHS who are favourites to win the county cup.

The U16 boys’ league was played over two nights because of the huge number of schools involved. The teams where split into three pools of 8 teams with the top two teams from each pool progressing to a finals night where the top six teams would play each other for the right to be crowned South Suffolk Champions and for the top two teams a place in the Suffolk Finals League.

The A team on the opening night won all but one game (Claydon High School).

A twist came later with the Claydon losing to East Bergholt. This created a three way tie settled on count back for the top two spots and a place in finals night. Hadleigh, to the boys delight, did on count back to the pool because they won more individual games. This turned our attention to our B team of Ezra Magante, Aaron Tampion (doubles), Jay Collis and Kieran Cloud. They battled through their matches winning 2-1 against most opposition they came across. A single loss in their league meant they qualified for the finals night, securing Hadleigh High with the only school to have two teams in the finals.

The finals night came around fast and the boys from both teams had put in a few extra training sessions to ensure they performed to their true potential.

The opening game was Hadleigh B vs Westbourne and an injury to Jay Collis dampened their chance of victory. Westbourne proved too strong and won the open game 2-1.

Our A team, Will Daley, Kyle Leeks, Callum Morrin (captain) and Olly Peters proved too strong for all other schools winning 11 of the 12 sets they played.

Whilst the A team cut through the opposition like a warm knife through butter, the B team had matches to play.

The A team were crowned champions and will now compete for the Suffolk title after the Holidays. Captain Callum Morrin said with a tear in his eye "this has been one of our greatest sporting achievements for our year group and my friends. I cannot wait for the county finals and a bigger challenge".

‘Youth Speaks’, a roaring success Youth Speaks, a competition involving public speaking, has been extremely successful for our school’s competitors.

Three students from Hadleigh High School, Lois Cooper, Laura Flockhart and Isabel Chaplin made it through to the next round in this iconic competition.

Mr Pryke and Miss Hutchinson, both English teachers, took the three students to Suffolk One on December 2nd, where they delivered a speech on Euthanasia. They were in competition with all other schools in the area. They managed to beat all of these, including Ipswich High School and the Royal Hospital School. Next they will go on to compete in King’s Lynn in February.

Year 8 Christmas Parcel Exchange In our German lesson, we received a parcel from a school in Pocking, Germany. It was a very exciting experience. They were students of the same age, and inside the parcel they placed many different varieties of food that they eat around Christmas.

They handmade Christmas cards with messages that we could translate. They also gave us a CD with sons. The tunes of the songs have a similar tune to the songs we know. Overall, it was an exciting and wonderful parcel, which obviously had a lot of effort put into making it. I hope they like our parcel as much as we liked theirs (written by Isla RomerLee and Holley Grimsey 8Y1 German) We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers the Very Best for 2015 from all the staff, governors, and all the pupils of Hadleigh High School.

One of my top new year’s resolutions is for 2015 to be the year that South Suffolk gets connected. We all know the benefits of living in the beautiful villages of South Suffolk – quality of life; historic architecture; glorious countryside. But inevitably, this comes with downsides and foremost among them is surely getting connected – slow broadband for many, and long journeys for commuters.

Suffolk County Council has taken a real lead on prioritising better broadband across the county, being the first authority to sign a contract with central Government for better broadband access, targeting 95% coverage by 2017. Of course, if your village has not been connected yet to super-fast fibre optic broadband you will wonder where the good news lies. The answer is that super-fast broadband is coming, one way or the other.

Phase 4 of the County’s super-fast broadband rollout programme saw connections in Boxford and Lavenham (Hall Road); phase 5 includes plans for Bildeston, Cockfield Green, Hintlesham and Lavenham (Common Junction). But it’s not just about new connections. Many households will be part of a network that is fibre-enabled but where they are too far from the box to benefit (since most fibre-optic connections rely on existing copper wiring).

So, in conjunction with BT Openreach engineers, Suffolk are trialling innovative approaches to deal with distance. For example, at Aldham, more than 2km from the Lady Lane exchange, a solution called ‘fibre to remote nodes’ is being trialled, with green cabinets attached to BT posts. This typifies the resolve to carry better broadband to remote areas.

Linking homes to the virtual superhighway is arguably easier than changing the real highway network. Last September I was delighted when Suffolk County Council endorsed my call to look again at the case for a Sudbury bypass. In October we received positive noises from Essex CC. Some have asked why the bypass was not then in December’s Autumn Statement – if only it were that simple!

The fact is that we have to take our time to build a high quality case or we will not be successful in persuading the relevant agencies to back a Sudbury bypass or any other infrastructure project – and there are plenty of candidates.

From articulated lorries scraping grade 1 listed buildings in Lavenham; to ongoing issues of the A12 and A14, all our villages will have claims for attention from the Highways department.

Then there is the Great Eastern mainline. Whether joining at Ipswich, Colchester, Manningtree or Marks Tey via Sudbury, local rail travel has been a frequently stressful experience of late. But at least the Autumn Statement showed that the Government is serious about making the investment in infrastructure necessary to improve matters – but it needs local politicians to make the case to get a share of funding. Again, improvements will not happen quickly but if change on the tracks and tarmac takes time, at least with better broadband more people with the option can consider working from home.

For those concerned with financial matters at the County Council, the start of a new year is always a busy period. Immediately before Christmas we receive news about the level of our annual settlement from central government and it is then time to finalise the budget for the year starting in April.

This year the Council once again faces significant reductions in its grant funding. Over the last four years £120m has been cut from the total nonschools budget of around £650m. We have estimated that a similar amount will need to be taken out over the next three years, and since many of the ‘easy wins’ have been achieved this is proving increasingly difficult.

At a time when demand for our services, particularly in the areas of Adult and Children’s Care, are growing faster than ever, we know that we cannot operate in the way that we have in the past. We have therefore been developing a series of ‘Transformation Programmes’ which fundamentally redesign the way that services are delivered. The aim is not just to organise ourselves more efficiently, although this is part of it. We have to tackle the causes of need for services, and thus drive down demand. In the area of home care provision for the elderly we have been piloting one of these Programmes for some time and the outcomes have been promising. The reorganisation of Children’s Centres, which will deliver the same level of service more cheaply, is another example.

‘Transfomation’ will enable us to deliver better services for less, but it is unlikely to be enough to completely fill the budget gap. This means that some services are likely to be reduced as we look hard at non statutory areas of activity that we do not have to provide.

Benchmarking has shown that Suffolk County Council is already among the most cost effective councils in the country in many areas. The Department of Communities and Local Government was recently criticised in a report by the National Audit Office for its failure to understand that some local authorities have more ‘fat’ to reduce than others.

“Harry who is 4 has global developmental delay, which affects everything from walking to talking.

Harry started at the Shelley RDA Centre in April 2014 riding a beautiful Shetland pony called Camilla. Each session entails a variety of exercises designed to work on individual areas affecting physical and cognitive development and since joining the Centre Harry has improved in all areas from sitting up nice and straight to achieving improved strength around his core.

Harry has now started a dual placement at a local mainstream primary school along with Thomas Wolsey School and is fully supported and encouraged to keep up with his riding as it fits nicely within the wider curriculum. He thoroughly enjoys each session, from combing Camilla’s hair and giving her a gentle pat to befriending all the lovely volunteers who work so tirelessly and professionally at the Shelley Centre. We look forward to a long and rewarding time ahead.”

SUFFOLK CONSTABULARY How To Defrost Your Car And How To Tackle Icy Roads Tips for defrosting your car: Windscreen / Windshield: de-ice your windscreen/windshield by using an ice-scraper and if you have one, a de-icer spray too. Remember to remove all of the excess scraped ice from your car as if left on your screen or bonnet/hood it could spray up and obscure your vision when you drive off. NEVER pour boiling water onto your windscreen.

REMEMBER to clean ice off all side and rear windows as well. Wipers: First make sure the windscreen wipers are turned off especially if you have an auto setting. Check your wipers by carefully lifting the wiper blades away from the screen. Make sure that your washer fluid is topped up and that some antifreeze is included. Mirrors: Make sure that your side mirrors are clear and that your internal rear-view mirror isn't misted up. If you have electric mirrors, DON'T fold them in overnight in case the mechanism freezes. Engine: Get into your car, turn your heating on, put your front fans on maximum and switch on your heated rear windscreen. It is recommended to always ensure someone is sitting inside to protect it when defrosting and warming up your car.

NEVER de-ice your car by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition. As modern vehicles offer much improved security car thieves are becoming increasingly opportunistic and you could become a victim of a 'frosting' car crime and, if this happens, an insurance claim would probably be turned down.

NEVER drive with misted windows: Don’t start driving until the whole windscreen/windshield is clear. Driving with limited visibility is dangerous, add bright sunshine into the mix and misted windows can be blinding. Allow extra time: Get up a few minutes early so that you don't rush and start driving before it is safe to do so.

Now your vehicle is ready to drive but what about those icy roads?

Tips for tackling icy roads: Keep your distance: In adverse weather conditions it is difficult to stop suddenly so make sure you keep plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front in addition to which snow spray from the car in front can also limit visibility.

Look ahead: to ensure you have time to react always look as far ahead as possible while driving, this way you will be able to recognise any potential hazards.

Avoid sudden moves: Always adjust your driving to the road and weather conditions. Slow down and avoid any sudden movements of the steering wheel and remember, over-zealous accelerating or sudden braking could result in skidding on slippery roads.

If you skid stay calm: you can regain control of your vehicle by decelerating, ease off or fully release the brake pedal or by easing off the accelerator and turning the steering wheel in the direction of the skid. This is known as 'turning into the skid' e.g. if the rear of the vehicle skids to the left, steer immediately to the left to recover.

Black Ice or Patchy Ice: Black ice is usually imperceptible (hence the term), it often looks like a normal wet road. Be especially careful of shaded areas, such as roads under bridges or the shade of trees, as these surfaces will freeze much faster than the rest of the road.

Hadleigh Hares Cross Country - Harwich A total of 16 Hadleigh Hares toughed it out on the unforgiving Harwich Cross Country course consisting of windswept muddy fields and ice cold puddles. We had some great performances including stunning debut runs from James McNally and Davina Greenwell. Jasmine Hayward produced another strong run to finish in the top 5 with Vic Kenny just behind and backed up by Debs Stewart (3rd V55). Elisa Bostock finished in 2nd position which is the highest finish by a female Hare at these events for some years. The boys also topped their group with 4 finishing in the top 20 and overall Hadleigh extend their lead at the top of Pool B by 3 points. The ‘Performance of the day’ award went to Elisa Bostock for her excellent placing and finishing top female Hadleigh Hare. Only 3 Junior Hares were brave enough to tackle the tough Harwich course, congratulations to Elizabeth Stewart, Freddie Ashmore & Ella Bodsworth.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Gardens have Boundaries. Boundaries are important.

When I was growing up the boundaries between my house and the neighbours was a 3 foot brick wall. For our first house in 1962 the side boundaries were a three foot post and wire fence. Our second house in 1967 was the same, as was our third house in Hadleigh in 1976 except that this had chain link as well as wires. I recently walked around Hadleigh's two newest estates making some deliveries, and two things amazed me. The first was how clever the architects had been at maximising the number of houses on the site, and the second was how much six foot interwoven fencing was on view. To some extent the two things go together. The layout of the neighbouring houses meant that even with low fences you could not see into the neighbouring houses. People were quite happy to see their neighbours tending and enjoying their gardens.

In my Hadleigh garden I have 3 boundaries with neighbours. One supplemented the original fence with a conifer hedge, one made the boundary for which they are responsible six foot interwoven on metal posts. I planted a mixed shrub hedge along the boundary for which I was responsible. The neighbour clearly did not think this gave them enough privacy, so Lawsons cypress was added on their side.This has since been removed. On the new estates I suspect that the interwoven is there to stay. To go to an alternative would require neighbours to agree, and planting your own hedge inside the interwoven would mean surrendering at least two feet of garden. My older hedges are at least four feet thick. The birds love these and nest in them. I hope that you can prove me wrong, but I suspect that blackbirds struggle to find nest sites on the new estates. The mixed shrub hedge that I mentioned above contained two varieties of forsythia, a couple of pyracantha, a berberis darwinii, and a variegated holly. The holly was allowed to grow into a specimen tree and is now after about 37 years about 20 feet tall. The others are pruned reasonably regularly, This year the pyracantha grew ten feet in a year, and has left me with a massive pruning job, which was what started me thinking about boundaries in the first place.

Weather Records In November at Kersey there was 87.1 mm (3.4") of rain, which is 70% more than our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of November was 206.3 mm (8.1") which is well above the average figure. In November the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (68F) which is a bit lower than average, and the minimum temperature was 0 Cel (32F) which is about average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 7 Cel (45F), which is typical. Amazingly this year I did not start lifting dahlias until December 12.

Hints The garden will generally look after itself in January, but if one has a nice dry day and the garden is not frozen solid or covered in snow one should think about :(a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain overhaul flower beds containing perennials.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club On 10th November we were offered a "Journey to Paradise" which turned out to be a riveting talk with a continuous picture parade of New Zealand, in all its botanical, zoological and scenic glory. Of course we all appreciate that the exotica available from florists shops and garden centres, come from places where they grow wild and I admit to being absolutely astonished by the vast areas of Anthurium Andreanum on one of our travels; of course foreigners are equally overcome by British woods carpeted in Bluebells.

Dudley Chignall and his wife embarked on an extended holiday travelling the length and breadth of the two islands, taking time to enjoy the wonderful scenery via the most empty roads and photographing everything of interest as they went. The scenery changes dramatically from the earthquake zone in the North of North Island, to the mountainous alpine area in South Island, Sadly the wonderful views of Mount Cook, reminded me that one of my cousins is still entombed, with his climbing companion somewhere in a glacier on the mountain.

All in all a talk full of interest from so many points of view, from plants to scenery and the still unspoilt social situation that exists there, perhaps it's because sheep out-number humans many times over!

Sudbury Rowing Club at Star Head/ Alton Head Star Head Sunday 16th November As the club moves deeper into winter training crews start to compete in head races which work in the same way as a time trial event, with a crew set of every 30 or so seconds with the fastest time winning each category. The senior squads from Sudbury attended Star Head in Bedford with enough crews to take a full trailer of boats the club was well represented. The race takes place through the centre of Bedford over a 2Km course going through various bridges and bends. The ladies squad picked up some of the first wins this winter for the club, The girls from the Intermediate 3 coxed four winning their main event as well as splitting into smaller boats with Lara Thomas and Rebecca Minnich winning the Intermediate 3 double sculls and Bryony Dixon and Melissa Murton winning the Intermediate 2 double sculls. The Sudbury men in the master’s b/c coxed four made up of the Adams brothers Paul and Lee, Keith Paxman and Mike Arnott and Cox Lucy Keedy-Davies.

Alton Head Saturday 22nd November Just a week after racing at Star, Sudbury rowing club made their way to a relatively new event ‘Alton Head’ just outside of Ipswich. This race saw crews setting times over a 3.2Km stretch of Alton water in ideal conditions.

Sudbury had various good performances although not everyone had competition in Ladies IM3 4+ With winning cup. left to right: their categories the Coach Chris Jillings, Rebecca Minnich, club still came away Sarah Jane Gibbons, Bryony Dixon, Lara Thomas with 4 wins. These include; Tracy Muir, Maria Vigneau, Tricia Mcgrillen, and Jennifer Ward in the womens masters D coxless quad. Rebecca Minnich, Lara Thomas, Bryony Dixon and Melissa Murton and cox Sarah Jane Gibbons in the womens IM3 coxed fours who set the fastest time for any ladies crew of the day. Lily BlairSlater, Amelia Rogers, Emma Rogers, Natasha Treagust and cox Sophie Masetti in the junior womens J15 coxed quads. Ella Hysom and Natasha Treagust in the junior womens J15 double sculls. Although there was no competition in his categories another notable performance is Nathan Franklin in the single scull who was the fastest sculler of the day. Overall: good results for the club for the start of the winter.

Beaujolais win for Stoke by Nayland Ladies Captain Eileen Hands had the perfect start to her year of captaincy by being a member of the winning team in the first of the mixed competitions. The November Beaujolais scramble is a firm favourite with all the members and, despite the wet conditions, proved to be a great success. A strong field of players arrived early for a shot-gun start and the From left to right: Richard Cross, Bonnie bright conditions helped Head Julian Lamb (Club Captain) some very low scoring but it Eileen Hands (Lady Captain) Graham Head was the team, led by the new lady captain Eileen Hands, which could not be beaten. The other team members were Richard Cross, Graham and Bonnie Head. It is the tradition for this competition to be followed by a Beaujolais brunch and this year was no exception.

Praise for Dynamic Newton Green The dynamism of Newton Green Golf Club has been praised by a top golfing official.

Suffolk Golf Union president Ron Kent has highlighted the club’s go-ahead policies as the sport faces challenges linked to the recession and other factors.

He was speaking at a reception staged at the club to mark Newton winning the Suffolk Hambro veterans Alan Vince, Hambro Cup for the first time in Bobby Ablitt and Phil Eaves 42 years.

Mr Kent commented: “This club has become a byword for its enterprise and tackling issues facing the game. Progressive policies in relation to membership, junior golf, the course and other areas have all helped to put it in the good position it has now finds itself.”

He was among guests at the evening that included county vice present Phil Platten, who had handed Newton the trophy at Woodbridge when they defeated Ipswich in the final.

The evening was hosted by club men’s captain Andrew Johnson, who also introduced veteran former Hambro players Bobby Ablitt, Phil Eaves and Officials and players Alan Vince (the former two being members of the 1972 winning side). The captain said in addition to the lifting of the Hambro trophy, there had been other success at county level with Eloise Aldous winning the Suffolk girls’ junior championship; Alice Barlow girls’ junior match play runner-up; Max Hemson, Jed Seeley and Connor Talbot winners of the junior team shield; Emily Penfold taking the county ladies silver spoon; and Patricia Havers and Jennie Leech winning the county centenary foursomes.
