Guinness World Record for Team Chris? You may have read that a few weekends ago, Team Chris completed the Great Bentley Half Marathon in 1 hour 54 minutes. Assuming the time is ratified this would be a Guinness World Record time for pushing a wheelchair around a 13.1 mile course. But that was only the beginning! The main event is still to come when, joined by Chris’s mum, Deborah, we will be attempting the full 26.2 mile marathon at Brighton on April 17th. No World Record attempts this time, just a leisurely run round! And it’s all in aid of a great local charity. Chris Stewart of Raydon, who has cerebral palsy is part of a new group at St Elizabeth Hospice which is aimed at helping young people from age 18 to about 30. It will provide specialist nursing and social support for younger people with disabilities and life limiting conditions who are too old for EACH, but who don’t fit easily with the older demographic of the main hospice. At the moment there is a thriving youth group that meets every month, and the first steps are being taken to provide much needed respite for carers in special facilities at the main St Elizabeth site. Having set out to raise about £1000, we are very pleased to say that we have already exceeded our target and are immensely grateful to all of you who have given so generously. However, it’s not over yet, so if you would like to make a donation, however small, please visit us either at our St Elizabeth Giving page http://giving.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/team-chris---brighton-marathon-2016/ Otherwise you can Google ‘Team Chris Brighton’ or like us on Facebook (search Team Chris) where you can find a link. Finally big thanks to our friends and training buddies at Hadleigh Hares for their support, and a special thank you to Steve Bowen, Leon Hayward and, Liz and Rob Jeeves for forming a protective cordon around us and generally keeping us out of trouble during the half marathon - Cheers.

On Saturday June 11th 2016 we are offering children aged 7 – 15 in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages the opportunity of another workshop with Pete Letanka, followed by a concert. Those who attended last year's concert will recall the incredible skill and joy shown by the children who were performing many pieces they had only just learnt in the earlier workshop. Pete Letanka is a renowned musician, pianist and composer who has worked with many schools to create original performance pieces. He brings the best out of children! We can do this because of the amazing generosity of the people in the area who have donated more than £18,000 to remember Rosa Simon. The workshop runs from 10am in the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh and a Sharing concert takes place at 3.30pm the same day. We have written to all the local primary schools and Hadleigh High School asking them to encourage their children to sign-up, but you can also do so by contacting me at: kharmanasms@btinternet.com. The session will be well supervised by a retired headteacher and other adults. There is no charge for either the workshop or the tickets for the concert, but a collection for the Fund will be taken at the end of the latter. We look forward to a wonderful day of music making!

Clean for the Queen is a national campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday which will be officially celebrated in June 2016. Following an appeal in the village newsletter and posters around Elmsett, eleven people on a cold and damp morning collected their high vis jackets, safety instructions, bags and pickers from the village hall on Saturday 5 March. Volunteers chose the area that they wanted to pick and when they would do it. Although the campaign dates were 4 - 6 March, this was made more difficult for some to take part that weekend by Sunday 6th being Mother’s Day. As the idea was to clear as much of Elmsett from litter as possible, other volunteers who were not able to be there Saturday had agreed to clear an area at another time. Elmsett Parish Council who supported the campaign thank the volunteers for helping and Babergh District Council for supplying the bags and the loan of the pickers and high vis jackets.

Our contact details:

In April 2017 it will be 50 years since Nedging and Naughton won the Lavenham Cup in 1967. They beat Woolpit 6-0 in the final which was played at Bildeston and the scorers were Kenny Bolton 2, Alan Wignall 2, Sam Crick and Dennis Wright. It was ample revenge as a year earlier Woolpit had beaten Nedging 4-3 in the final of the Brent Eleigh Cup at Lavenham despite the fact that Nedging had been 3-0 ahead at half-time. As well as playing for the club for about twenty seasons I was also the secretary for about ten and so I do have a knowledge of all the lads who did play that match and still see some of them and can easily find out where they now are. Indeed some have moved but I have already traced them with a little help! As it will be 50 years next April I thought I would make an attempt to get them all to meet up again for a re-union perhaps at the Naughton Wheelhouse which was always the club headquarters, or at least somewhere local. I have done nothing as yet, but do need to know if enough of the old team are at all interested and then I can make a start. So if any of you at all in this photo would like to contact me on 01473 827406 or 07759 496817 with a decision and your contact details I can decide. We would all be now at least ‘70 plus’ and I do know that all are still alive and well. It would be good to all meet up again and maybe see how well or indeed, how badly we may have all aged. As said, I do know where most of you live and am contacting the others, but it would help if you call me. Alan Wignall

News from Kersey School Owls In Owls class this term we've have been looking at two different topics; "Going Green" and "Leisure and Entertainment." At the moment we are designing our own Ferris Wheels and Punch and Judy Shows. We have also been working hard in up leveling our clarinet playing with Mr Rowe as well as learning new songs to sing each week. Our Discovery Cafe was a huge success this term and centered around Tim Peake, who we have been following since he first ventured into space. The children had to create capsules for Tim to travel back to Earth in. Unfortunately a lot of our 'Tim's' didn't make it! Badgers We have had a busy few weeks recently with lots of learning happening in class. The parents were invited to come in to our Discovery Café where they were able to learn with the Badgers about the skeleton and why it is important to our body. The children are learning songs for their Easter play which is being performed on the last day of the term and they are also looking forward to their ‘Night at Kersey’ museum Egyptian workshop coming up. Hedgehogs Hedgehogs class have had a very busy few weeks. We enjoyed our parents joining us for our 'Discovery Cafe' where we planted seeds and learnt all about how plants grow. We even designed and painted our own plant pots. We also had an exciting World Book Day dressing up as our favourite book characters and thinking about the story 'Percy the Park Keeper'. We made monster book marks, puppets and thought of our own stories using the characters. As our topic is growing we have been reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and wrote instructions of how to get to the Giant's castle. There were some amazing ideas of what the Giant's land might look like! Squirrels Squirrels have been busy learning about the Gruffalo. They have created their own Gruffalo's and have used adjectives to label them. We joined in with the village litter pick by collecting rubbish from the car park. We talked about recycling and the importance of putting litter in the bin. Everyone came to school dressed as their favourite book character for World book day, they talked about their character and enjoyed lots of book related activities. If you would like to know more about Kersey school please ring the office on 01473 823397, email admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

Three of the Blazes founder members, John Pipe, Bim Richardson and myself (Peter Gowers) have got together to download our collective memory banks, and as a result I have written a book telling the Blazes story, from the early 1960’s up to our last performances in 2013. The book includes several photographs, costs £3 and copies can be obtained by phoning 01473 827300 (email peter.gowers@tiscali.co.uk) or from John or Bim, with all proceeds going to cancer support charities. To bring the story up to date, John, Bim and myself, having been friends and band mates for over 50 years, feel we would like to play together again while we are still able, and accompanied by the vocal talents of Marty Linden and Mandy Leeks and with bass player Terry Mayhew, hope to perform at a function headlined by Bim’s current band, Paul Gee and the Retros on April 23rd at Hadleigh Town Hall, at a charity dance in aid of Breast Cancer Support. Although Marty’s early performances were based around his love of Elvis, he has now extended his repertoire to include a variety of other material. Mandy is also a seasoned performer, having sung previously with Prism and Local Heroes among others. And Terry has been ‘borrowed’ from the aforementioned Retros. Peter Gowers

Suffolk Team to take on ‘Restaurant Ramble’ for charity The team behind some of Suffolk’s top restaurants are to undertake an 18 mile challenge for a leading cancer charity. The ‘Restaurant Ramble’ has been organised by Stuart Inns, the team behind the Long Melford Swan, the Hadleigh Ram and the Lavenham Greyhound. The staff from Stuart Inns will be walking the 18 miles between all three restaurants on Sunday 17 April in an effort to raise money for charity Macmillan Cancer Support. Family business Stuart Inns is run by Andrew Macmillan, with daughter Lorna Pissarro and son’s Oliver and Iain Macmillan. Joining the family on the ramble will be other team members from Stuart Inns. Lorna commented: “Suffolk is such a beautiful county so this challenge will be the perfect opportunity to really enjoy the best of the countryside, while raising much-needed funds for an important cause. We have all been training together, which has been a great team-bonding experience, and we are delighted that some of our customers will also be joining us on the day.” The team will set off from the Hadleigh Ram, heading first to the Lavenham Greyhound for a pit-stop, before finishing at the Long Melford Swan where a champagne reception will be held. Customers have been invited to either join the team on the full ramble, or to meet the fundraisers at one of the venues along the route to cheer them along the way. Stuart Inns has long supported Macmillan Cancer Support by hosting regular fundraising events in its three pubs, most recently by taking part in the World’s Biggest Quiz at the Hadleigh Ram in February. For more information on the Restaurant Ramble, visit longmelfordswan.co.uk/news/swan-stuart-inns-2016-restaurant-ramble.

Would you like to be the Local Recorder for Elmsett? The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Local Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the ‘present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’. A Local Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items. If you are interested, please look at the Recorders Pack by visiting www.slhc.org.uk, click on Recorders, then click on Recorders Pack in the text on the left hand side to acquaint yourself with the guidelines of the scheme. You do not need to be a historian; you do not need any qualifications other than an interest in your parish. In return you will receive a copy of the SLHC Newsletter and be invited to the annual conference specifically for Local Recorders. To volunteer to help in this important work, please contact recorders@slhc.org.uk

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at Wattisham Air Museum

Hello dear Readers. I had quite a lot of reaction from my story last month about the ridiculous proposal to squash houses into the immediate back garden of an Elizabethan Cottage in Kersey. Even a regional newspaper made contact. I suggest that the people of Kersey should raise their profile on the issue. Publicity is everything. I do try to take you to some interesting places when I am out “on location”. For April, I am only up the “frog and toad” – at RAF Wattisham; in fact the Wattisham Station Heritage Museum. I was in a massive hangar, enormous doors had been rolled asunder and two planes were on show. You see me in the picture with a Hunter XG194 with call-sign Blackjack Red One. I gather that during the Cold War, planes stood in hangars dotted about RAF Wattisham with their engines ticking over and ready to take flight at a moment’s notice. I am grateful to my friends Peter and Julie Bamford for escorting me at RAF Wattisham and indeed for providing the beautiful flying jacket. The morning of the photo-shoot was particularly cold but even so the jacket was monstrously heavy. There is a separate museum with plenty to see. The hangar was several miles from the museum. You will need to book in advance through the museum www.wattishamstationheritage.org and the Sunday opening dates (11 am to 4 pm) are 3 April, 1 May, 5 June, 3 July, 7 August and 4 September. Just before going to print, my chauffeur Frank pointed a long platinum and titanium coloured bonnet towards Cheltenham Race Course. Frank says that his knees are not up to these long hauls. It was St Patrick’s Day as the traffic parted to allow us to our resting place. As you know, I am not a great racing man and I was once again disappointed. One could not move for people – a tide of race-goers ebbed and flowed as a race started and finished. There will be a picture in a future column. I met a lady in Hadleigh one evening recently who was taking her ferret for a walk. Not something that one would want up a trouser leg – or a weasel come to that! The ferret was pure white and on a harness. Apparently, in days of yore, a pet ferret was a sign of great wealth. As with many firms of Solicitors we have been very busy on the property front as those purchasing property other than their residence have sought to complete before Stamp Duty Land Tax rates are loaded by 3% after 31 March. We can offer you a service with the benefit of over 30 years of experience, sadly lacking so often these days. Lasting Powers of Attorney are a good thing – allowing your affairs to be run after losing mental capacity. Why not speak to us about them. Howard Gibbons

Hadleigh High School Students are working with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance to make Hadleigh a dementia friendly community. Dementia now affects around 1 in 14 adults over the age of 65 which are our student’s grandparents and great grandparents This year a record 130 Year 10 students from Hadleigh High School attended a dementia friends information sessions to improve their understanding of dementia and to help raise awareness in our community. The students committed to doing more to raise understanding and awareness. This included; being more patient in shops, offering help if somebody looked confused. To telling their families and friends more about dementia and adding that they had become dementia friends to their CVS. Mrs Creak teacher in charge of organising this session says “it is so important for our young people to understand the different health and wellbeing conditions that can affect us and our families. The dementia friends awareness session is part of a series of awareness programmes that Hadleigh High School are delivering on mental health and wellbeing. Creating great understanding ensures that our young people are fully engaged in our community; of which we are very proud”. Claire and Kelly Dementia Champions said “When we arrived and saw 70 students for session one and a further 60 students for session two we were a little overwhelmed, but the student participation was fantastic they were clearly engaged by the dementia friends information session and the whole group made a commitment to share their new understanding with family and friend through social media and by wearing their dementia friends badges. This certificate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk MP Welcomes Chancellor’s Budget for Small Business I was delighted to see that the Chancellor of the Exchequer used the Budget to slash business rates for small and medium sized businesses. During the election campaign this issue was raised with me time and time again by a great many business owners across the constituency; business rates were generally considered to be unfair and a danger to the commercial activity of our towns and villages. Earlier this year, the Government concluded its business rates review and as a consequence it has decided to cut the burden on ratepayers in England by £6.7 billion over the next 5 years. What exactly does this mean in practice? From 1st April 2017 a staggering 600,000 of our smallest business will pay NO business rates at all - zero. This will affect occupiers of a third of all commercial properties. Small shops in the constituency - from Long Melford to Capel St Mary, Sudbury to Hadleigh - with a property rateable value of £12,000 or under, will be paying no business rates in 2017-2018. In the first year, a business with a property at the top end of this scale would experience a significant saving of £5,904. For the period of 2017-2021, this measure would put £24,648 more in the pocket of our local entrepreneurs. This was the single most generously funded measure in the Budget and is a measure of the commitment our Government is showing to small businesses. With a background as a small business owner myself, I know how every step the Government takes to lighten the load is a huge boost. Now all we need is local people to do their bit by shopping locally too.

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers For March’s walk we finally had a dry day and 23 of us took full advantage of what felt like the beginning of Spring. We were pleased to welcome a number of new walkers this month. Our route for April’s circular walk on Saturday 9th will be shorter than usual at 6.4 miles, starts at Bentley, progresses via Great Martin’s Hill Wood, East End, Dodnash Wood and finally returns to Bentley. This walk includes the very best of beautiful rolling Suffolk views, passing through woods (hopefully the bluebells will be in flower) and fields. We will meet at the Bentley Village Hall car park at 9.30 and end at The Case is Altered, Bentley’s community pub which has been recently reopened. If anyone is in need of a lift or is prepared to offer someone a ride in their car, please contact us through the web site and we will try and match people up. The easiest way to get to the Village Hall by car is to leave the A12 at Capel St Mary and head towards Bentley. On entering the village, The Case is Altered pub will be seen on the left and the car park is on the right about 50 yards further on. The web site will also include a sketch map showing where the village hall is located. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy, rough and very boggy in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Last month we had a number of map requests but the email addresses supplied had been incorrectly input and as a result we were unable to oblige. Please be assured that we will always acknowledge any communication so, if you have not had a response within a day or two, please either resend the request or phone. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

My, we are looking smart since Elaine kindly donated a pop-up banner for SESAW events. Kelvin and his team at Keith Avis Printers did a great design job using our animal photos, including mine of course. And they still find time to produce this Community News! If you want a job done, ask a busy person. That’s one of Mum’s expressions, and she comes up with some funny animal names too, like Lobbie the kitten who is now “helping” Emma at Swaynes, our Vet in Long Melford. The two quickly became friends and it may well be a permanent arrangement. Still in Long Melford, don’t forget our big Spring Sale at the Old School, 10th April, 10-3pm. Before that is Barbara’s Bonanza on 2nd April at the Parish Rooms, Stratford St. Mary. There will be a licensed bar and big raffle at the Village Quiz Evening, Leavenheath Village Hall, 7pm, 14th May. Tickets £8 per person, including a hot supper with vegetarian alternative. Phone 01206 263269 to book your team of up to eight people. Just time to remind you that dogs over eight weeks old must carry I.D. inside and out from 6th April. That means a tag bearing owner’s name and address plus a microchip inserted by your vet. You may recall this little piece of magic ensured I was returned home when I went missing a few years ago. Ollie and his friends say the place would not be the same without me. Mum might say if you want a cat chased, ask a busy dog like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua! Be Solar Self-Sufficient With the recent drop in Feed in Tariffs, you have to ask yourself is there still a financial case for installing solar PV. Well the simple answer is yes, but these days instead of relying on the government’s generous handouts, you need to use the energy that you generate to make it pay. With the focus now on using the electricity that you generate, new storage systems have been developed that allow you to collect and store the energy as it comes in and then use it whenever it is required. The secret to making solar PV work for you, is understanding your supply and demand, i.e. how much you are generating and how much you are using. If you can get these to balance out then you will be pretty much self sufficient. Solar PV can also help you reduce your gas or oil usage by contributing to the heating of your home. So if you are interested in using solar PV to cut your bills, or if you are an existing PV user looking to make even more savings, then call Mark at Hadleigh’s Energy on Tap Limited on 07780 975787 or 01473 810089 for more information or advice.

June Gurr John and the family would like to take this opportunity to thank the many friends, colleagues and carers in and around Hadleigh and Ipswich who gave us such support in our time of loss. The family were overwhelmed by the many lovely people of Hadleigh who came to say goodbye at Seven Hills and at June’s wake. A special thanks is We hope you will join also extended to the carers of June’s last resting place, too numerous to name individually, but you know who you are. We the family thank you so much. The Ipswich and East Suffolk Branch of Parkinsons also came to pay their respects to June. The kindness of so many people towards myself and the family was most touching and gives us all hope that june, although would have been highly embarrassed at all the fuss, we think would have been inwardly quite pleased that so many loved her as much as John G. did. Rest in peace dear love of my life, ole John G.

County of Suffolk

The Medieval Manor and Town of Hadleigh mid 13th – late 14th century

A glimpse of the Manor of Hadleigh and the Town of Hadleigh in Suffolk from the mid 13th century until the late 14th century as revealed by the translations from Latin of the manorial documents from the Medieval Manor of Hadleigh

Look out for a new booklet entitled The Medieval Manor & Town of Hadleigh which will shortly be on sale. It should help to fill a gap in our knowledge of Hadleigh’s fascinating history in the medieval period. The content derives from Margaret Translations, research & text by Margaret Woods Woods’s translations of over 200 medieval Latin documents from the Manor of Hadleigh manorial manuscripts, most of which are stored in Canterbury Cathedral Archives. It recounts briefly the early history of the Manor of Hadleigh and gives a glimpse of life on the manor and in the town during the 13th and 14th centuries. Since most of the Latin texts have never before been systematically translated, much of the information (along with Margaret’s display in St Mary’s church in September 2015) is publically available for the first time since the 14th century. This is a colourful, readable and modestly priced booklet (£2) with proceeds going to local charitable organisations. Initially it will be available at Keith Avis Newsagents, the Idler and the Tourist Point in St Mary’s Church.

But when the serial womaniser ex-husband of three of the ladies (Mrs Sullivan 1, 2 and 3) goes missing – apparently on the run from the Russian Mafia – the peace is about to be shattered……… Come and enjoy this very funny play which is full of wonderful characters ranging from the dramatically eccentric to the downright scary. It will be on at The Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 14th – 16th April 2016 at 7.30 pm. Tickets will be on sale at £6 if bought in advance (£7 on the door if any left!) from Fountain House Café (from 1st March 2016) and from 01206 396674 or text to 07891 974844.

News from Whatfield School Whatfield School celebrated world book day this month, with some astonishing sights and extremely inventive costumes. Class 2 pupils were invited to join a theatre visit from the Wolsey Theatre, and all students were involved in a variety of book based activities in the afternoon. I was particularly impressed to see the Hulk enjoying a quiet read in our village hall, during the world book day celebrations! In order to prove to our mothers how much we love them we like to give them special treats, bake them cakes, give them flowers and invite them to our Mother’s day lunch. At Whatfield Mums and Grandma’s enjoyed a great meal of lasagne, with a chocolate crunch pudding. Flowers grown on our allotments and gardens, and kindly put together by the Gant family were presented to our beloved Mums and Grans! RE in class One was based around Easter, and as part of our celebration of Spring, it was lovely for class 1 to be able to make their own gardens. They designed and created them themselves, and it has reminded us that everything is at a special point in the year where things start to come to life. As we are in collaboration we often find reasons to get together with our partner school, Bildeston, but it is always fun to join in events with our pyramid of schools and the pupils in years 3 and 4 thoroughly enjoyed the chance to join in the small schools cross country at Elmsett school recently. Whatfield and Bildeston have been running the golden mile over this year, and so far pupils have run 1322.13miles. Whatfield are currently sitting 4th in the golden mile league table which is a great achievement for a small school. We have reached further than the distance of Spain and almost into Portugal which is amazing, but we are aiming to run to Rio for the start of the Olympics. Other sporting events we have enjoyed participating in are the quicksticks tournament and the multi-skills festival at Hadleigh High School. Our pupils love participating in these sporting events, and have great fun meeting their friends from other schools. We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to over the next term, and as always if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are very welcome. Please telephone 01473 823 309 to make an arrangement. Here we are at the beginning of April 2016 and now our Living with Dying event is not a distant dream but a reality that is happening in 6 weeks time! Having giving you little bits of information over the last few months we are now able to give you definite events and times as well as some personal experiences which may well resonate with quite a lot of you. We have 5 free Masterclasses happening during the day of 14th in the Guildroom opposite the Church porch. 1. 10am – 10.45am Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance 2. 11.15am – 12noon Why I love being a Funeral Director 3. 12.30pm –1.15pm Death and after (a multi faith perspective) 4. 1.45pm – 2.30pm Gotelee Solicitors 5. 3pm – 3.45pm Suffolk Cruse Bereavement Care There is no need to book, just arrive on the day. You can go to as many or as few as you like. We have also arranged two sets of tours for you: Firstly, Gwinnell & Sons Funeral Directors have offered to take people on a tour of their High Street premises. There are 2 times, the first at 11am and the second at 2pm. It would be helpful, although not essential, if you could register your interest at their stand in St Mary’s during the morning to help with numbers and tours will leave from St Mary’s at the relevant time. The tours will last approx. 30-40 minutes so you can plan your visit around any Masterclasses you might also wish to attend. The Town Council have offered to take you on a tour of Friars Road Cemetery so if you are considering your options regarding your final resting place this could be very helpful. Meet Philip at the main Cemetery gate at 12 noon. There will also be a stand on the day in St Mary’s where representatives of the Town Council will be able to show you their plans for the new Green Cemetery in Hadleigh and answer any questions you may have. We have over 17 stands for you to visit on the day in St Mary’s Church, and we are pleased to have included this year a representative from SOBS – Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide. A lot of people in Hadleigh and the surrounding area have been touched by Suicide in some way and SOBS provides free, indefinite support for survivors of 18yrs and over. This is Trevor’s story: Whilst away with the British Army, I had devastating news that changed my life and turned my world upside down. I received the news no parent ever wants to hear, my 19yr old daughter Chloe Rose was found dead in her flat. The pain and devastation I felt was unexplainable, like my heart had been pulled from me and crushed into a million pieces. As the days and months moved on the numbness and pain just seemed to double and things never really felt real. I was diagnosed from suffering with extreme grief, with feelings of deep sadness and guilt because I was not around when she died. The inquest came 10 months later and I was told Chloe had chosen the path of suicide. The shock was totally shattering, all the questions bounced around in my head, why? How? It was time to get professional help to guide me through my journey of grief, to help me find some light at the end of this very dark tunnel I was in. I turned to some fantastic psychologists and psychiatrists who have helped me make sense of my pain and grief, and also used the welcoming support and great friends I have made at St Mary's Church in Hadleigh. This gave me a place to go, light a candle for Chloe and pray she is ok in heaven. I now walk this earth to keep her spirit alive and to raise awareness for others in her memory. Forever Young, love you my Angel xx SoBs and me. SoBs has been a hugely influential group to be part of, this is because all members have been through a huge, life changing event that we all have in common. Losing a loved one by suicide is probably one of the most horrendous things to go through but all group members are very, very brave and we all support each other and understand what each and everyone is going through, with no questions asked and you’re never judged. Tears and the pain are shared in the group without anyone feeling silly. I'm so glad I found SoBs. Organ Donation is another subject we are pleased to be highlighting on the day. Jill is a lady who has had personal experience of a family member being a recipient and this is what she says: Deciding if you want to become an organ donor is a very personal decision but one that can save lives and make a substantial difference to someone after your death . Because there is a serious shortage of organs, on average three people a day die in need of a transplant as there are not enough organs available. This is in part due to the fact that organs can only be donated by someone who has died in hospital. Usually these patients are on a ventilator and are declared brain dead or die despite medical treatment usually as a result of a brain haemorrhage, major accident or stroke. The number of people particularly younger people, dying in these circumstances is falling, mainly because of improvements in road safety, medical advances, and the prevention of strokes in younger people. Another major reason for the shortage of organs is that many people have not recorded their decision to be a donor after they die by joining the NHS Organ Register or, as importantly, discussed their decision to be a donor with their families.

Please come along on May 14th to find out how you can make your death matter, by saving somebody's life and changing their future forever. Don’t forget we also have the 3 exhibitions for you to see from Tuesday 10th – Thursday 19th May in St Mary’s 10am-4pm with £1 entry fee apart from Saturday 14th when everything is free of charge. If you particularly remember someone special to you who has died, then bring along a photo of your loved one to put on our memory tree. We will then all be able to see and remember the special people in our lives that are no longer with us. There will be lots of posters and banners around the town in the next few weeks so put the date in your diary and come along. We are keen to be of help to everyone. Kate, Jess and Pauline

A Special Anniversary On March 4th well over 150 people gathered in the Ansell Centre to celebrate 10 years of ‘Hollywood in Hadleigh’ and also the contribution made to the Charity by Mike Newman. We combined our 10 year celebrations with a tribute to Mike, one of our founder members, who died last year from a rare disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). We showed the film ‘It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet’ in memory of Mike's long and memorable career as a vet here in Hadleigh. The actor who played Siegfried Farnon in the film bore an uncanny resemblance to Mike and some of the amusing scenes reminded us of the many similar situations Mike had found himself in over the years. The team at ‘Hollywood in Hadleigh’ would like to sincerely thank all those who so generously donated prizes for the raffle or helped on the night to ensure the event ran smoothly and was very successful. The warm atmosphere was fuelled by shared, fond memories of Mike, our colleague and friend. The £450 proceeds from the evening have been divided between SESAW, the local animal charity supported by Mike and the PSP Association.

Cosford Comment ...from Jenny Antill In his budget statement on 16th March George Osborne confirmed that Suffolk is to be included in what the Government likes to describe as the ‘Eastern Powerhouse’, (although at the time of writing some of the intended participants in this plan are proving backward in coming forward). This is part of the Government’s Devolution plan for the English regions. Readers will remember that at the time of the Scottish Referendum promises were made to devolve power, not just to our northern neighbours and to Wales, but also to English authorities. Since that time mandarins in Whitehall have been puzzling over how to achieve this without giving too much away. As readers of my blog will know the process has been very confused and undemocratic. What seems to be on offer is little in the way of new funding or tax raising powers and more new responsibilities rather than genuine new freedoms. We live in one of the most centralised countries in the world, and it seems that central Government continues to find it difficult to entrust too much to locally elected bodies. The proposals aim to combine Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridge with Peterborough, under the aegis of an elected Mayor. A Eurosceptic cynic might not fail to notice that the arrangements produce a space remarkably similar, if not identical, to that used by the EU for economic development planning; less Devolution, more compliance with the preferences of Brussels perhaps? On a brighter note, the Suffolk Walking Festival starts on 14th May and there is a plethora of interesting guided walking excursions on offer for those who like to get out and about in our beautiful and unique county. There are a number of walks in our area. I am sorry that as a married woman I do not qualify for the 2 hour ‘Speed Dating Walk’ for single adults aged between 35 and 55 leaving Lavenham’s Cock Horse Inn at 2 p.m. on June 4th. There are however other opportunities including a walk round Sudbury in Gainsborough’s footsteps on June 5th and walks starting in Long Melford and Nayland. Details of the festival can be found at www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk. Jenny Antill is the Suffolk County Councillor for the Cosford Division. Forms will need to be returned by Monday evening the 13th – details will be on the forms. If you have never made a Scarecrow and would like to make one this year (it is easy – just remember it is a Scarecrow) please contact me on either chrismterry@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 01473 311102. I hope that by the time you read this, if you have made a Scarecrow in previous years, I will have been in contact with you, but if I have not managed to speak to you, please contact me. Trail forms will be available in early June from MallWood Insurance, The Co-op and 2, Snowcroft. The 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival kicks off on Saturday, 14th May and continues for three weeks until Sunday, 5th June. The varied programme of 77 themed walks across the county range in length from a gentle stroll of one mile, to a challenging 60 miles in 24 hours and will take place along Suffolk's glorious coast, through scenic, gently undulating countryside and around our medieval towns and villages. The annual walking festival is a partnership project supported by all of Suffolk's local authorities and is spearheaded by the Discover Suffolk project at Suffolk County Council. This year's festival launch, which is sponsored by Suffolk Coastal District Council, takes place at RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk coast. The event will also mark the launch of Suffolk's Year of Walking, which starts in May 2016 and ends in May 2017. “The Year of Walking will be celebrating two of my very favourite things: walking and Suffolk” says Lesley Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk and patron of the festival. “The aim is to inspire people to build more walking into their everyday lives and to discover what fun it is!” “We are delighted that this year’s walking festival marks the beginning of Suffolk’s Year of Walking” adds Cllr Goldson, cabinet member for health at Suffolk County Council. “The purpose of the initiative is to celebrate walking in the county, promote walking events and encourage new walking opportunities. The festival does a wonderful job of demonstrating how easy and inclusive walking is, and what a fantastic county Suffolk is to walk in. It is making a very positive contribution to our ambition of becoming the most active county in England.” There are three lots of challenge walks planned, which have been sponsored by the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Mega Challenge, for the ultra fit, is a walk which will be undertaken over a 24 hour period, covering 60 miles from Lowestoft to Felixstowe. The Classic Challenge, a firm favourite among regular festival goers, is made up of five walks of between 11 and 14 miles each. As with The Mega Challenge, the route goes from Lowestoft to Felixstowe, but will be at a rather more sedate pace and spread over five days. The Mini Challenge consists of three walks of around nine miles each: Oulton Broad to Beccles, the 'Trimley Loop' and a walk ending with refreshments at the National Trust's Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge. Other walks include two stress-relieving mindfulness walks; a 'prambling' walk for parents with prams; photography, birdwatching and Pilates walks; a gentle stroll for sufferers of dementia and their carers, a walk which includes views of early marsh orchids, a speed-dating ramble and the ever-popular 'Horrible History For Families' in Ipswich. Some include a cream tea or other refreshments and all are an informal and sociable way to explore the county, meet like-minded people and to indulge in a leisure activity which benefits both body and soul. To view the full walks programme and book tickets, visit the festival website www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk Brochures will be available from Suffolk tourist information centres.

The Hearing Care Centre, which offers private hearing care across Suffolk and Norfolk, is again organising one of Ipswich’s biggest quiz events, to help raise money for their chosen charity Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. The event is being held on Sunday 15th May 2016 (7.00pm), at Greshams Sports and Social Club, on Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night. This is the eleventh trivia fundraiser organised by the company, attracting over 200 people each time, who in turn have helped to raise more than £14,800. Teams for the quiz can include between 4 - 6 members. Entry is £4.00pp (nibbles included), and there are great prizes for teams who come in the top 5 places. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre said “Our quizzes are becoming more and more popular every time we have one. Put simply, they are a great night out with friends and family, for not a lot of money, and what’s even better is that it’s all for charity”. “We have set ourselves a target of £10,000 to raise in 2016, so we are able to sponsor our very own Hearing Dog puppy and follow its journey through to being placed with a deaf recipient”. The Hearing Care Centre is also looking for local companies to either sponsor individual quiz rounds for a donation of £30.00 or donate items for their prize draw, in return for some very good exposure. To purchase tickets call The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or for further information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz

The Porch Project is going from strength to strength We had a good pancake evening on Shrove Tuesday, the cooking evenings every fortnight are well supported, many thanks to Caroline Liggett for organising this. There was a visit by MyGo – an organisation who will help with CV’s, interview techniques, job hunting and apprenticeships. If there are any employers in Hadleigh who could offer apprenticeships to our young people please contact Zach Corrie at youthworker3@porchproject.co.uk. There are several young people desperate to find work before their college courses end in June. We are hoping to have a Karaoke evening, glass painting and origami session in April as well as the usual drop in sessions. Street Reach had been postponed until 7th and 8th May so there is more time to think if we can help with any gardening or clearing up jobs. Please contact opsadmin@porchproject.co.uk if there is anything we can do to help. The Porch Project is still looking for volunteers who would be willing to give up a few hours twice a month to help with homework club, music development and drop in. Please contact Zach if you are interested.

The 94th Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts The 94th Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts came to a fantastic finale with a concert at the Ormiston Academy on Sunday 13th March. The Auditorium was full to see a fantastic concert showcasing some of the talented performers from Dance, Music and Speech and Drama. The performaces varied from Prose Reading and Mime to Tap, Ballet and Dance Groups. The Venue of Performing Arts performed two amazing performances which left the audience spell bound, as did the performance from Stagecoach, Sudbury. There were also performaces from entries as young as 8, including Oliver Laxton who entertained the audince with his Prose Reading of Gangsta Granny by David Williams and Ralph Mann who performed Solo Acting with You're a Good Man Chalie Brown by Charles Schultz. Just some examples of the extremely high standard demonstrated thoughtout the festival. One of the Adjucators, who adjudicates all over the world, stated that she was very impressed with the standard at the Sudbury Festival especially the Solo Shakespeare classes. Darrell Bernard-Jones, a student at the Ormiston Acadamy, enhanced the concert experience with his amusing introduction to the performances. The Bernard Johnson Award, which is given by the Committee on the recommendation of the adjudicators, to an outstanding performer, aged 16-25, in Music, Speech & Drama or Dance was presented to Emily Barlow. The Suffolk Free Press Anniversary Cup is given, on the recommendation of the adjudicators, to the most promising performer, aged 15 or under, in Music, Speech & Drama or Dance and this award was presented to Amira Appell. The Holmes & Hills Award for Endeavour is given to a student entering the Festival who has achieved one or more of the following: continued with their performing arts studies despite personal difficulties; made great progress in these studies during the year; used their performing arts skills to the benefit of the community and this was presented to Shane Baxter. Many thanks must go to Holmes and Hill in Sudbury who are very kindly sponsoring the Festival. Chair of the Festival, Jan Osborne, stated that 'the Festival had been a resounding success full of wonderful dancing, singing, music and drama. The ethos of the festival is to not only enable people from all age groups to show case their particular talent, but also to help our young people build on their character and confidence for the future. It is very important that the Festival continues for many more years to come. The Festival is run by a group of dedicated volunteers but if it is to continue to thrive it needs more members.' If interested please contact Jan Osborne on 01787 466096 or moonriverjan@gmail.com

Sudbury Dramatic Society Outside Edge A genteel summer afternoon’s cricket is about to go very wrong indeed in the next production from Sudbury Dramatic Society at The Quay Theatre, Outside Edge by Richard Harris which is on at The Quay from Tuesday 10th until Saturday 14th May at 7.45pm. A varied group of couples, with nothing more in common than a desire for the men to put bat to ball in their regular Saturday cricket match, are pitched together in a summer afternoon of tension, back-biting and chaos amongst the sandwiches, cups of tea and the sound of leather on willow in this evergreen, classic comedy. As team captain Roger bumbles around trying to get his ever-changing team line-up on to the field, his players and their partners squabble over all manner of subjects ranging from chicken soup, ex-wives and a peccadillo in Dorking. Just when victory is in sight Sharon gets stuck in the loo and Miriam wants to know about Roger’s peccadillo in Dorking…..then rain starts to fall. Outside Edge is a play that has always enjoyed a huge success and inspired a successful television sitcom in the mid-1990s starring Timothy Spall and Josie Lawrence, remaining popular ever since, some 35 years after it was written. Tickets for Outside Edge are on sale now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com

Horrible Histories: There were tales of torture, plague, fire and skulduggery in Claire Partner and Ian Baalham's recent talk on The Horrible Histories of London. The mood was set from the moment they arrived dressed as a grim looking gaolers from Newgate prison in the 17th century. As Nick and his wife Mary, they described their role in this infamous prison before elaborating on the seedy, gory side of life in and just outside the metropolis. It was clearly a violent, dangerous and smelly place even for the well-heeled. There were tales of prostitution, profiteering and deprivation. No change there then just a little less obvious these days. The Car Man: Matthew Bourne’s exciting ballet lost none of its appeal for appearing on the big screen at Cineworld. Loosely set to the Ian Baalham (Nick), music of Bizet’s Carmen, the dancers hurtled Claire Partner (Mary) through this tale of seduction, love and lust in a 60’s American garage setting. As always Bourne gives his audience a visual feast of sound, colour and unique choreography. Lunch Bunch: Diners enjoyed a leisurely lunch at The Fox, Bulmer Tye this month. The restaurant prides itself on its fresh seasonal produce and this is reflected in their daily menu. There was something for everyone’s lunchtime needs at a reasonable price. Even the ‘Tasters’ on their dessert menu thoughtfully catered for ‘a little something sweet’ after a meal. With controversial topics like the EU referendum coming up for discussion, the ladies were glad of something sweet. Sleeping Beauty: This time it was the real thing at the Theatre Royal, Norwich. As always Matthew Bourne makes the story his own to Tchaikovsky’s familiar music. Advertised as a ‘Gothic Romance’ there is most certainly a dark but not depressing side to the production with wicked fairies, spells and even a vampire. Humour is ever present, especially when the delightful baby princess makes an unexpected appearance. A delicious early lunch at the Assembly House helped members cope with this energetic, colourful, exuberant performance on stage. JD

24th March signified the start of Girls Tower one year ago. The girls-only group was new to Porch Project, but has remained a fortnightly event for a year now. Girls Tower is a space where the girls can spend time together and de-stress after school, whilst sharing in activities to develop their physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being and education. It is unusual within this culture for girls to have a specific space just for them, so this group can reduce some of the pressure they may feel, and allow them to focus on building lasting friendships with other girls. To enhance this, we offer a range of activities. Recently we have had a visit from Clare Lock of the Suffolk Hat Company, made jewellery for Mother’s Day, completed an E-Safety session by our volunteer trained in this, and had an Easter-filled evening. What better way to celebrate a birthday than with cake! We celebrated our milestone with cake and team building games. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with and supported Girls Tower in the last year. For the faithful volunteers who give up their time week after week, and for all the girls who have made the past year of Girls Tower so much fun. If anyone would like to join Girls Tower, please contact Lizzie at youthworker2@porchproject.co.uk

Saving Winter in Hadleigh The much predicted dire winter seems to have passed us by although typically we were busy. Coal was in demand and we had a serious alert due to a heating failure. The occupant was supplied with our full thermal night kit plus an electric heater and was helped until Babergh D.C. were able to install a new heating system. We hope to distribute flyers explaining what we are all about as a raft of people are not fully aware of our project. We are also pleased to advise that the outlying villages of Bildeston, Chatisham, Hintlesham, Polstead are now included in our catchment area. A full list of which will be included in our annual report. Our Treasurer will be presenting this report at the Hadleigh Annual Town Meeting on the 19th of April, copies will be available and he will be pleased to receive any questions or suggestions. Out of courtesy to the Council our report must be submitted to the meeting first but will we hope, be published in the May edition of Hadleigh Community News. We will be having a stall in Hadleigh Market as from Friday 8th of April and on the first Friday of each month thereafter. These sales will vary in content and the first will have a military theme of Regimental cap badges, Videos and books, one of which will be a complete compendium of WW2, plus a large number of original WW1 magazines. All sales will be donated in total to SWH. We are grateful to Babergh D.C. in granting us this concession. Should you have any knowledge of those requiring assistance we will be pleased to receive details.Confidentiality will be kept at all times. We are a registered charity No.1162885. Hadleigh Wildlife Watch group is part of the National Wildlife Watch scheme. We are thrilled to announce that we have just won an award for being the best new group in the country. The group is run by Caroline Lee, nursery teacher at Hadleigh Community Primary School, and Lisa Herron, a teacher at Hazelmere School in Colchester. We meet one Sunday a month, usually the second Sunday of the month, from 10.00am-12.00pm. We do not have a set base, but meet at various woodlands and locations in and around Hadleigh. SUFFOLK CONSTABULARY Taking pride in keeping Suffolk safe

Concerned about your nest egg?

Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team Sadly, my time in Hadleigh has been brought to an end with an official and chosen move to the Control Room at Headquarters from 21st March. This decision has been made based on the efficiency savings enforced on the Police by the Government, which has meant a cut in numbers for the Safer Neighbourhood Team based at Hadleigh. Hadleigh SNT have had to reduce its numbers from 2 PC’s and 6 PCSO’s to 2 PC’s and 4 PCSO’s, (force wide the numbers were 166 PCSO’s down to 107 PCSO’s). I have totally enjoyed my time covering the villages over the past nine years and will miss being out and about, meeting and chatting to people. I would like to thank you all for your support and help over the years. Hopefully you found some of my articles useful? I’m sure once the team is in place they will make themselves known to you all and help out as best they can. Should you need to contact anyone from the SNT then please do so via the team email account:- Babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Following on from last month’s article here’s some more crime reduction advice for your home. Perimeter Security - Fencing In many cases, the fences around your home are the first line of defence. The front, rear and side boundaries have different functions where security is concerned: • 28% of domestic burglaries are committed from the front of the house. • 7% from the side and 62% from the rear. In addition 3% gain access via the roof. This should help to determine your priority areas. Check Your Boundaries Walk round the whole perimeter of your property. Check your fences, gates shrubbery and hedges. Look for possible points of entry and hiding places. Check for good visibility from surrounding houses and roads where appropriate. Front Boundaries Low boundaries at the front give maximum visibility. Burglars will feel safer if they can hide behind high fences/ hedges and be obstructed from the view of passers-by from the road. Rear and Side Boundaries The height of rear and side fences should be 1.8m. If your boundary is particularly vulnerable the height can be increased with trellis. This can be attractive and will act as a deterrent as it’s difficult to climb over without breaking the fence or making a noise. Gates can also have trellis fitted above them. Gates All gates should be fitted with lockable slide bolts and be locked with a sturdy padlock to stop someone reaching over to gain entry. If you use your side / rear gate to exit your property then a surface mounted mortise lock can be fitted which allows the gate to be locked / unlocked with a key from both sides. Additional Measures and Information Foliage against a fence can provide an effective barrier, especially if a prickly shrub is planted, and can also improve appearance. A four foot box hedge at the front is ideal as it provides natural surveillance as well as a wide barrier for anyone to cross over and makes a potential burglar feel vulnerable because he can be seen. If you feel that you need something such as barbed wire or other topping along the tops of walls and fences, you are advised to get in touch with the Crime Reduction Officer for advice. They will be able to give you advice regarding your responsibilities under the Occupiers Liability Act. So for the last time …. PCSO 3108 Mandy Coleman “So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen….Goodbye”

Happy holidays everyone. We at the Shelley Centre are having our four weeks respite (well the horses and simulators are) but there is plenty for me to watch in the yard. The able bodied volunteers are riding out the horses to keep them fit; Lyn’s team of holiday helpers are feeding, watering and muck removing. That’s one thing they don’t have to do for Babs and me luckily. My friends in the herd are quite prolific when it comes to producing manure for the muck heap and it keeps the barrow party extremely busy. Any gardeners out there? You can have a load of muck any time you like; just come on up with your bags, make a small donation to our funds, and away you go! Talking of funds: the next shindig is at Nayland Village Hall on 16th April when the group ‘Work In Progress’ will give a great evening of music (and dancing) from the 60’s, 70’s and beyond. Tickets, which cost £12.50, can be had from the Centre (see below) or from Margaret Fowler on 01206 337 229. Wish I could join you. The trustees are looking for more ponies. We have a number of young riders who need to advance onto larger animals. If you look at the picture of Camilla sunning herself in the back yard you will understand the problem. Camilla and her sister are valuable starter rides for small people, but these children do grow! We have been fortunate to have Zara on loan: she is such a poppet, and settled into being a special RDA pony brilliantly. She is an 11hh Welsh Section A pony with black eyeliner round her big eyes, and a dappled grey coat, I’m sure you will agree that she’s quite pretty. Zara’s owner is happy to have her working with us in the school term times; she goes home to her own young rider for the holidays. Now Lyn tells me we need to find two more equine helpers. She is looking for a 14hh and a 14.2hh pony to join us; ideally they should fit the description of ‘first pony’ because they won’t do anything too exciting, but they would have plenty of work and good company (though I say it myself) and a very happy home. If it’s a loan, well, the real owner can come here every weekend and hack out over the most beautiful valley in Suffolk. The Summer Term starts for us on 11th April and we are looking forward to a great 11 weeks of high achievement and good fun. See you soon. Whatfield Players Performers Wanted! We are planning a new production for the 28th and 29th October 2016- ‘The Feel-good Show’. We hope to banish those winter ‘blues’ as the nights draw in by presenting a varied programme of songs, musical numbers and short sketches. We would like as many people as possible to be involved - whether you have performed before or just fancy ‘having a go’ for the first time. We will be happy to welcome singers, musicians or actors. You may have your own ideas on what you would like to perform or you may prefer to be guided by us to appear in an item which suits your particular talents. If you would like to be involved, whether as a performer or behind the scenes, we would love to see you at our A.G.M. on Wednesday 22nd June, 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall. If you cannot come on that evening but would like to be involved or you would like more information beforehand please contact our chairperson, Diane Armour: 01473 822000. It would be particularly useful for us if you could let us know in advance if you plan to bring your own performance pieces. We look forward to hopefully seeing some new faces, as well as welcoming back some old ones!

Hadleigh Market – Use It Or Lose It Every Friday while Hadleigh sleeps, Carl Jones wends his way from Diss to the town. His white van is full of fresh produce which he will have magnificently displayed and ready to sell by 8 a.m. Carl is no stranger to market ways as his Grandad and Uncle were stallholders before him. He was nine when he first went, with his Mum, to work on his Uncle’s stall in the Cattle Market at Bury St Edmunds. Not child labour with remuneration but ‘treats’ instead. Having worked on the family stalls for many years, at different locations, his lucky break came just after he passed his driving test; he became the proud owner of a stall on Snetterton Market. Twenty four years ago he added Framlingham to his venues and he is still there every Saturday. When he heard about the vacancy on Hadleigh’s Friday market, he decided to take on the challenge. The stall is stocked with fresh produce from London’s Spitalfields Market and if necessary topped up with more items from Lincolnshire suppliers. Both fruit and veg are of the highest quality as are his fresh flowers and potted plants. Prices compare exceptionally well with supermarkets and there is absolutely no waste. Commenting on his possible customers Carl said “The younger shoppers like the convenience of supermarkets while older folk enjoy the personal service and are more used to buying at an open market”. It is clear from his cheery disposition that Carl thoroughly enjoys his work. When asked if he had any dislikes he laughingly replied “None. Only a high wind and driving rain are a stallholder’s enemy”. Carl’s family business has certainly come a long way since his Grandad’s day, selling only apples and eggs from his own farm. What hasn’t changed is the ability to keep a running total of your bill while chatting and without a calculator in sight. JD

Weeds away - the easy way! Trevor’s customers have been very impressed with his convenient, quick and cost-effective method of weed control for Patios, Block Pave and Stone Driveways, which is hassle free and can cost less than the Do It Yourself alternative. In addition, customers have been able to allow pets and children to play safely in the garden following weed elimination treatment. One of Trevor’s regular clients, Martin Wright, commented “I have used Trevor’s spraying service on two occasions to deal with the recurring toublesome problem of weeds on our patio and paths, the spray used by Trevor is very effective and well applied by him. This deals with the problem over a good period of time and the cost is very reasonable. A much better solution than DIY products which are not very effective and last only for a short time.” Trevor’s Garden Services provides the ideal solution to long term weed termination. Using a special, full-strength Pro Biactive formula, Trevor can easily control your annual and perennial grass problems, as well as those annoying broadleaved weeds. Trevor also recommends this special formula, 360g/lt glyphosate (which is unavailable in everyday retail outlets) for clearing out-of-control weedy ground prior to planting or sowing. We have had such a fantastic response to our professional spraying services we are booking up fast, so if you have areas of block paving or driveways, patios and paths, or a plot of ground that’s wild with weeds, call Trevor for fast, free quotations on 01473 824315 or 07850 630389 to find out more about how you can make your weeds go away the easy way!

Down to Earth ...with Dave This winter has been the wettest and warmest on record causing all sorts of problems for the plants and their cultivation, but with luck the colder weather at the beginning of March may well put things back on a more even keel. We really do need frosts to break down the soil and to kill off some of the pests in the ground. March being the beginning of Spring is now the start of the busier time of year for gardeners, with seeds to sow, over wintered plants to coax back into growth, and then, when all danger of frost is past, bedding plants to put out. Don’t be in a hurry to buy your bedding plants just yet unless you have somewhere like a greenhouse or a porch to keep them in for a few weeks. I do wonder how many plants bought early on don’t survive because of frost. We have been on our first garden visit of the year with a trip to Blakenham woodland garden near Ipswich, a six acre woodland garden, part of the N.G.S. open garden scheme. This was mainly to see the lovely display of snowdrops – very stunning. As we were on a private visit with the U3A Garden group we had access to parts of the garden not generally open to the public. There is something special about going through gates marked ‘no entry’ and ‘private’. We were shown the very formal vegetable garden laid out with antique style brick paths and very neatly trimmed foot high box hedging. It seems that a few years ago the original box hedges were killed off by the dreaded box blight, this was replaced with a variegated form of box which is resistant to blight, and they look fine. Also in the private part of the garden are some magnificent yew hedges. They are clipped once a year and the fresh clippings, which are potentially very poisonous, are carefully collected and sent away to be used in the manufacture of a cancer treatment drug called Taxotere. This is used to treat various cancers, mainly by trying to halt the growth of tumours. The Latin name for yew is ‘taxus baccata’, hence the drug’s name. The woodland gardens will be a picture later on in the year with masses of bluebells and magnolias, well worth another visit. Well, that’s all for this month, Dave

New Season at Hadleigh Tennis Club The new tennis season starts in April, not that the Winter period has been unproductive, with our Ladies and Mixed Doubles teams active in the Ipswich Leagues. Club play (social tennis) continued through the Winter on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings and it was surprising how few of the sessions were lost to the weather – they are a hardy lot the Hadleigh tennis players! Through the Summer there will be three club sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. There will also be the usual mix of social and “tournaments” for members throughout the year. Come along and give us a try. For the little folk, Mary-Claire Tweedy will again run her Junior Coaching; two sessions: 4.00 to 5.00pm for Beginners and 5.00 to 6.00pm for Improvers. Mud, Sweat and Cheers for Hadleigh Cycling Hadleigh Cycling Club’s riders and helpers turned out in force at the inaugural Mud, Sweat and Gears mountain biking event in Hintlesham in early March. In the first round of the season, Adam Chamberlin (featured in photo) finished 2nd in the Sport Male category and achieved his first podium spot. On a tough course on a chilly day, Junior Club members, Alex Spraggons, William Lowe, Daniel Flockhart, Harvey Gladwell, Jared Gibson, Ben Lowe and Ryan Gooderham performed well. Amongst the adults, Andy Laflin, Tony Green and Valerie Gladwell results were noteworthy. Lucy Jay, HCC Committee Member said, “I am certainly looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress this year, if this race is anything to go by it’s going to be a great season.” HCC riders have taken part in a number of events over the winter months. In the Breckland 10 mile time trail event, Phil “The Hat” Barnes, despite dreadful conditions, set a personal best and finished just out of the top ten. And Alex and Molly Cutmore did particularly well in the Lee Valley Youth Races. The Junior Club runs on Wednesdays from 6 – 7 pm at the High School. The sessions are £2 for members, £3 for non-members. HCC has also been working with the High School to develop a satellite cycling club for students. Over 60 members signed up at the recent Subs night at The George. The membership fees are £10 for an individual and £30 for a family. More details of the Club and planned events can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or www.facebook.com/HadleighCyclingClub
