The Hadleigh Show 2015 - Saturday 16th May Preparations for the 176th Hadleigh Show are well underway so put Saturday 16th May in your diary and join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park.

Hadleigh’s “Year of the Sheep” will be launched at the show so make sure you keep an eye out for all things woolly, including I’m A Sheep Get me out of Here and a sheep trail. “The Sheep Show” also returns, a humorous yet educational live stage show about sheep and wool with some surprisingly talented dancing sheep! Ringside entertainment includes the Inch Perfect Trials Display team, the Young Farmers Tug-O-War, Cyril the Squirrel and his racing terriers and falconry displays.

There will be cattle, sheep, goats and horses on show; over 160 trade stands; the Art Exhibition and Sale; Rural Crafts; a Flower Tent and the Education Tent featuring art from local schools. The Food Hall will showcase the very best of our local food and drink producers, tempting you to sample and buy. The separately run, but always popular, Bert Stocks Fun Fair will also thrill adults and children alike.

Suffolk Walking Festival 9th - 31st May 2015 With a packed programme of over 90 guided walks, this year's Suffolk Walking Festival which takes place 9th - 31st May 2015, is set to be the biggest yet with an eclectic mix of walks around medieval villages, market towns, along the coast and through the gentle landscapes of Suffolk.

The festival is a partnership project organised by Suffolk's local authorities with the aim of encouraging residents and visitors to get out into the countryside and explore the county: “The festival is a great opportunity for people to learn about Suffolk's wildlife and history while at the same time enjoying the health benefits of walking, in a sociable setting” says Lesley Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk, who is the new patron of the festival. “We spend so much time driving in our cars to get from A to B and this is a wonderful chance to slow the pace a little and to see, hear and smell some of the delights of Suffolk”. Many of the walks include refreshments such as homemade cake or afternoon tea, some include entry to a visitor attraction and all are led by knowledgeable walks leaders to guide people along the route.

The programme includes themed walks such as Sketch Book Strolls with a local artist around Brandon Country Park; a seven mile hike called Food Glorious Food through Thetford Forest to the award-winning restaurant at the Elvedon Hall Estate for lunch; A Scottish Visionary and His Fairytale Village, which starts from Thorpeness on the coast and Beachcombing for Beginners on Felixstowe beach.

You can follow in Benjamin Britten's footsteps along 'Curlew River' and learn about the composer, his music and the wildlife that inspired him; walk the Horseshoe Trail and learn about horse racing in Newmarket; explore the Ponds of Helmingham Hall and walk in the footsteps of Thomas Gainsborough around Sudbury or learn about John Constable as you amble through 'Constable Country'.

Since many of the walks sold out last year, early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

Young artists and sculptors in East Anglia stand to win prizes worth in excess of £2,000 through a competition inaugurated by Cheffins Fine Art Auctioneers and organized by Drey Contemporary Art Consultancy. The Cheffins Art Prize is the first Art Prize ever to be established specifically for young artists in East Anglia. It follows on from Cheffins’ existing sponsorship of The Excellence of Youth, an annual exhibition showcasing the work of young artists. “Both Cheffins and Drey Contemporary are delighted to take this opportunity to encourage and support young artists in the region,’ said Cheffins’ director, Jonathan Law. The Cheffins Art Prize invites artists under 30 to submit their work in one of four categories determined by age. It also offers them an ideal platform to bring their skills to the attention of a diverse panel of judges, made up of eminent and well-respected individuals in the art world.

The four categories are as follows. Artists aged between 19 -29 (winner’s prize: £1,000), sculptors between 19–29 (£1,000), artists aged 18 years and under (£200), and sculptors aged 18 years and under (£200). Entrants will also be afforded automatic consideration for exhibiting in the Excellence of Youth 2015/16. In addition to the cash rewards, the Cheffins Art Prize will be a tangible achievement for the successful entrants and a very worthy addition to their histories. All of the finalists’ work will be exhibited at Cheffins’ Cambridge showrooms. Entries to the competition, each of which must be accompanied by a fee of £10 for administration and processing, must be submitted by June 30.

Cyclists, join St Elizabeth Hospice’s Suffolk Sportive and pedal for a purpose this April The local charity are holding their annual cycle event on Sunday 26th April and it’s suitable for cyclists of all abilities. Starting and finishing in the gorgeous surroundings of Alton Water, riders have a choice of a 40 or 80 mile routes or a shorter family ride, taking participants through the scenic Suffolk countryside; or an off-road circuit around Alton Water.

The routes have been planned with the assistance of experienced cyclist Matt Kerr, a Hospice supporter and member of Ipswich Bicycle Club. Matt’s mother Ann was cared for by the Hospice, and died there after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Joanne Rodger, Events and Challenges Fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Our cycling events have always proven popular, and we hope this fantastic location and our great range of routes will help get cyclists of all abilities involved in supporting their local Hospice. “We ask participants to raise as much sponsorship as possible - any funds you raise will make a difference and goes towards providing vital care and support to our patients and their families.” Registration is open now and is £30 for the longer routes or £12 for the family and off-road routes.

Fundraising For Comic Relief The children at Orchard Barns Kindergarten, Stratford St. Mary have been having lots of fun whilst raising money for Comic Relief.

They have been baking cakes all week and selling them every afternoon in The Red Nose Cake Shop. Parents and friends have been providing cakes too ensuring full and varied availability. Whilst baking the children are learning about the ingredients; where they come from and how they are grown. They learn about weight and measurement, eagerly counting out the measures and they learn about the effect heat has on the ingredients as the oven turns them into tasty bakes!

But most of all they have fun mixing and occasionally tasting.

The children have also been making funny faces using paper plates and paint, hunting for noses at the Red Nose Treasure Hunt, making up red nose rhymes and many other fun activities including making red nose bunting for the cake shop.

This year Orchard Barns Kindergarten is celebrating fifteen years of being graded Outstanding by Ofsted. There are many celebratory events being planned including an afternoon tea party for the senior citizens of the village and an Easter visit to Milsom’s restaurant to make chocolate eggs with the chefs there. We are all looking forward to brilliant fun!

Makumbaya School – Nearly there!

In February we returned to the Gambia, for the 5th time, and visited the school we have been fundraising for over the past 3 years.

The new school, which first took in pupils in the Autumn of 2013, comprises 4 classrooms and a small office. Since its opening, a toilet block and a kitchen (see photo) have been built and a number of trees and shrubs have been planted in the school grounds. A water supply has also been brought up to the school and is used not only by the school but also by the inhabitants of the village of Makumbaya. A boundary wall is now under construction which, when finished, will have a piece of ground fenced off which will be cultivated and used by the pupils so that they can be taught how to grow their own vegetables.

Fundraising is still ongoing for this project.

We were warmly welcomed to the school and the pupils entertained us with their singing and dancing which we were encouraged to join in with. A meeting followed with the school staff, committee and village elders during which we were thanked for all the support we had had given them and for the 20 boxes of stationery and toys we had sent. During this meeting we were made “honorary” citizens of Makumbaya and were presented with a certificate to endorse this honour. In 2016 there is to be an ‘inaugeration’ celebration at the school to which members of the local government and other dignitaries will be invited. The event is to be televised for The Gambian Television Service. An invitation has been extended to us to join in the festivities.

Over the past 3 years we have raised almost £7,000 towards the project, although this has not paid for the entire school it is a significant amount.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have assisted with our fundraising over the past 12 months, with a special mention to our friends June Brown, Marian and Derek Cole and Hilary Griffin, without whose generosity the kitchen wouldn’t have been built yet. The children thanked us for what we had done for their school, and we have received some very touching letters of thanks from them.

Connor Clements 7/1/94 - 18/2/15 Connor was cruelly snatched away from us after a very short and sudden illness. Sue, Barry and Kieran would like to send their heartfelt thanks for the love, support and wishes of you all. Thank you for the many, many cards and beautiful flowers. Special thanks also to Mitch from the Brewers Arms. We only met Mitch recently. Connor worked at the Brewers Arms part-time for about a year. We were truly touched that Mitch offered the venue and buffet after the funeral in Connor’s memory.

Our dear beautiful, gentle, funny, cheeky, clever boy has gone to be with the angels. Connor will always be with us in spirit and we all have some amazing and treasured memories of how he touched our hearts and souls in his very short, but full life.

During the month of March we have seen the restoration of the Mill move positively forward. Sunday March 1st. Bill Griffiths helped us clear 80 years or more of dirt and dust from the upper floor where we then began working on the sack hoist. The sack hoist lifts sacks of grain directly off the horse driven wagon straight via the locum to the sack floor or internally from the stone floor.

To lift a sack of grain, the miller ties the sack hoist rope or chain around the top of a grain sack. He then tightens the rope that is tied to the sack hoist lever.

The friction wheel drops onto the friction ring tightening the belt on the main spindle which winds the sack hoist chain around the windlass and lifts the sack. The sack goes through three trap doors, one in each floor.

We were delighted during our works to find an old sack. It was rather wellworn and had some holes beautifully darned and others in need of repair.

One side of the sack is printed with the name B &M Mason who was the last producers of flour at the mill. The other side has the name “Kersey Mills” printed. Each pair of stones was known as a Mill. So Kersey Mill would have had 6 mills as it had 6 pairs of stones, hence the plural “Kersey Mills.”

During our day we were also accompanied by the kestrel flitting backwards and forwards to the nesting box perched outside the locum. We are hoping that again we will have a new family raised here at the top of the mill.

The pit wheel works continue. The first four teeth as seen in the accompanying photograph have been shaped and fitted.There are 108 further to be fitted.

When the miller pulls on the hand rope, the sack hoist lever lifts the friction wheel off the friction ring. A chain on the end of the sack hoist rope unwinds the rope and drops back to the meal floor.

Rosa’s Fund: looking forward to June 6th It’s official! The Rosa Simon Music Fund is hosting a children’s musical workshop and concert on Saturday June 6th. We’ve already had pledges of involvement from the towns’ three primary schools who will be sending pupils to rehearse from 10am to 1pm in the United Reformed Church with both preprepared pieces and a totally new performance guided by Pete Letanka, a jazz pianist and composer. At 3pm in the same location the children will host a concert of these works in aid of Rosa’s Fund. Tickets cost £5 and are available either from Keith Avis Newsagents or by emailing me on danton89@hotmail.com We are hopeful that pupils from other schools will also be able to take part.

The Fund continues to support a range of local musical opportunities for children, including the purchase of new music stands and ocarinas (see photos) for St. Mary’s School, sets of ukuleles for Bildeston Primary School and a donation to Hadleigh High School to ensure its participation in a Shakespeare Festival.

In 2015, EAAA are looking to recruit more volunteers across the region to help us celebrate 15 years since the charity began.

Howard with TV star Mark Stacey Dear Readers, as you tear through those pages to get to my column, Easter will be upon us and so Happy Easter to you all. The evenings are lighter and the weather brighter. Following my ground breaking visit to the screening of Fifty Shades of Grey, I was invited to the picture house again to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. As with the first Exotic Marigold film one breathed the smells, colours and excitement of India. I put foot ashore in Bombay many years ago when the QE2 made a call there and then later to Cochin at the Southern tip of India. Well talking of the silver screen, the picture shows me with Mark Stacey a television star. You will all instantly recognise Mark from Bargain Hunt, Flog It, Put your Money where your Mouth is and he was even on the Christmas Celebrity Countdown. Mark visited Hadleigh in February with Colchester auctioneers Reeman Dansie’s roadshow, where he is an auctioneer. You will see Mark casting his eye over my piece but it only brought forth a sigh. I gather that my readers presented all sorts of interesting objects to be fondled and valued. Kersey CEVC Primary School News What an amazing start to the Spring Term we have had at Kersey Primary School. This term has been filled with a world of literature and fun with both our Harry Potter Book event and World Book Day.

During our Harry Potter event the children were placed into one of the four Hogwarts houses and spent the afternoon making wands, witches and wizard hats and even having a go in our Harry Potter themed photo booth.

This term has also seen World Book Day take place. All the children (and even some of the staff), were dressed as their favourite book characters. On the day Owls class were emerced in a world of imagination making Wonka chocolate bars and even having themselves blown up into blueberries!

Hedgehog’s classroom was turned upside down by an ‘intruder’ at break time, which led to a hunt for clues. It turned out the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk had been seen at school. Squirrels had a great time making their own Very Hungry Caterpillar books and Badgers got very ‘jammy’ whilst making their Alice in Wonderland themed jam tarts.

A well done also needs to go to Ramona (Squirrels), Cerys (Hedgehogs), Charlie (Badgers) and Joe (Owls) for winning the best dressed characters in their class. Also congratulations to Jago (Owls) who won our competition for reading in a peculiar place. Jago could be found in a car boot reading, hopefully he didn’t get stuck!

The Year 5’s and 6’s class are getting very excited for their upcoming performance at the Snape music festival in Aldeburgh this month. We are celebrating the life and music of Benjamin Britten at the event. The children will be performing two songs entitled ‘Orford Lighthouse’ and ‘Oliver Cromwell’.

Spring! – Time for raised beds At Orchard Barn we’ve been busy over winter clearing areas of the site that have been neglected for decades.

Many young fruit trees have been discovered and some replanted to fill gaps in old hedges. Several of the mature trees have been pollarded to reduce the chance of wind damage.

But amongst all the brambles we also found several dead branches and trees brought down by storms over the years and, as you know, we don’t waste anything at Orchard Barn so these will be used in the vegetable plot as foundations for raised beds. Hugelkultur beds are a means of improving soil drainage and available nutrients by burying dead and decaying wood. We intend to create yet another Hugelkultur bed using our recent finds.

A large trench will be dug, the bottom forked over then dead material laid in before the soil is replaced to form a mound. We also put boards round the raised bed to keep it in place.

In previous years we’ve grown prolific pumpkin plants 25 to 30 feet long, large crops of tomatoes as well as other salad crops, runner beans, etc. Hugelkultur beds are an excellent use for dead wood.

Whatever the result at the end of this marathon election campaign, one of the personal highlights that I will never forget was attending the Thomas Gainsborough School ‘mock’ general election in March. The event was broadcast live on ITV Anglia and showcased the participation of young people in democracy. An entire group of 1200 pupils aged 11 – 18 came out to ‘vote’.

If they can do it, so can the rest of us. After all, the election will take place on the 70th anniversary of VE Day, when we celebrated the triumph of democracy over tyranny in the second world war. Whomever we support, we have a historic duty to vote. But where to cast our precious X? My personal campaign priority is ensuring we deliver opportunity for our young people. In a nutshell, it’s about making every effort to link up with schools, employers and the various tiers of local Government to ensure that today’s school pupils have a realistic chance of finding well paid work in our local area. Many parents I speak to dread the inevitable path they fear their children will face – leaving school, and boarding the train to London to find quality employment, with all the sacrifice of time and commuting cost that implies.

In fact, transport is a key part of the challenge. Commuters may be prepared to brave the uncertainty of our local rail services, but businesses considering investing here to deliver new jobs will not be so prepared to ‘put up’. They will simply look elsewhere. To give one example, if we can link improvements to our local road network to planned investment in the A120, our school-leavers could potentially find themselves within commutable distance of the largest employment hot-spot in the region – Stansted airport.

But whether it’s transport, education or the NHS, all the areas where we seek local improvement cannot happen without national economic stability. The Conservatives have delivered a strong economy after inheriting one that was expected to struggle. A Ram At Leisure A new member of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep (HYOS) team has just started his promotional tour of Hadleigh. His first stop is the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre where he stands majestically in the corner of the Reception area, joining the sheep bunting hanging overhead. This is his first public appearance since leaving the bright lights of the Jim Lawrence showroom but others are planned in different locations around the town.

However, he will interrupt his busy itinerary to join his live counterparts and HYOS Committee members at the Hadleigh May Show on 16th May. He will return to his travels until participating in the “Big Muster“of all crafted beasties in September.

Armchair Players The February meeting saw our founder and organizer, Maddie, retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all her hard work over the past 6 years. At the beginning of March we took a trip to the Quay Theatre Sudbury to see a hilarious production of 39 Steps, directed by Malcolm Hollister, one of our members. Everyone left the theatre with a smile on their face!

For our March meeting we had Robert Crighton, formerly artist in residence at the Quay Theatre Sudbury, perform his oneman production of Everyman. Dying Matters May 23rd 2015 10am-4pm at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh ‘Dying Matters’ is a free event for everyone of all ages covering end of life care and dying. As well as a large number of professional stands, there will be refreshments available for you to enjoy whilst browsing. A booklet containing the details of all the professional services involved in this valuable work, who are with us on the day, will be available for you to take home. This can be used as a handy reference when needed.

We are delighted to say we have joined forces with the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC). Our event is now part of their National Dying Matters Awareness week which runs from 18th - 24th May, and has various events planned throughout the UK. Other attractions will include a Guinness World Record attempt and Scutchers Pop Up Restaurant, booking in advance will be essential.

There will be a wide range of exhibitors including Hadleys Ice Cream, Rafis Spicebox, Bowers Beef, Copella Fruit Juice and Mauldons Real Ale. With great feedback from visitors and exhibitors in previous years who especially appreciate the free entry to the event and the free Park & Ride from Delphi Car Par, Newton Road, Sudbury, CO10 2RR with buses leaving every 15 minutes. Organised by the Sudbury Town Team, a voluntary and non-profit making group representing the interests of local business, many of which have sponsored the event. New Environment Agency legislation spells change for septic tank owners Rural living has its benefits: fresh air, the views and plenty of space to enjoy life, but we do miss out on some of the urban convenience.

Most of us are dependent on more expensive heating fuel, and then some of us have the added â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pleasuresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of maintaining a septic tank. Sewage treatment isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t something that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to think about, but the repercussions on the environment for not properly treating Craig Finbow, Managing Director, wastewater can be severe and Owls Hall Environmental Ltd. costly.

Traditional septic tanks work by holding wastewater so that bacteria, naturally present in the effluent, can digest it. Septic tanks then discharge the resulting effluent into a drainage field (a perforated pipe in gravel) so that slow drainage can allow bacteria to break down harmful chemicals to safe levels. This slow drainage is important, although we visit many homes illegally discharging from their septic tanks because their drainage field isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t large enough or working effectively enough. And in some cases we see septic tanks discharging straight into waterways.

The new legislation states that septic tanks cannot discharge into rivers, ditches or streams but only into adequately sized drainage fields; and it is the expectation of the Environment Agency that the inadequate practice will cease.

Many homes that we visit have had their septic tanks in place for years, with many inheriting them from previous owners. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite usual for homeowners to be unsure as to how the system is working and where it is discharging to.

So what can you do?

Firstly figure out whether you are compliant. Ask for advice next time your sewage system is emptied or serviced, or call your tanker company for information. We always offer our customers free advice and free site surveys, if they are interested in replacing their current system.

If your system is inadequate there are usually two options: â&#x20AC;˘ Installing, enlarging or replacing a drainage field â&#x20AC;&#x201C; giving opportunity for bacteria to digest effluent before it meets a river or stream â&#x20AC;˘ Installing a cleaner and more efficient sewage treatment plant (many models treat sewage to the required standard so that they can discharge straight to a water course with no drainage field at all) Many homeowners are considering sewage treatment plants instead of the older and more traditional septic tanks. There are many makes and models on the market to suit all house sizes and with a range of affordable options.

Star trumpeter to play in Sudbury Crispian Steele-Perkins, one of the most famous classical trumpet-players in the world, is to perform with the strings of Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra in Sudbury in April. Crispian plays the theme tune to one of the BBC’s most popular and longestrunning programmes, the Antiques Roadshow. He can be heard in Bond films, Dr Who, and with popular artists such as Kate Bush and Cliff Richard as well as the greatest classical artists such as Emma Kirkby and Bryn Terfel.

Described by Virtuoso magazine as “the world’s leading exponent of the Baroque Trumpet”, Crispian collects and restores antique trumpets, and has performed and recorded on them with The Academy of Ancient Music and The English Baroque Soloists. Crispian Steele-Perkins visits Sudbury on Sunday 26th April in company with strings of the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Leslie Olive. The programme is a sparkling cascade of music for trumpet and strings by Handel, Charpentier, Stanley, and Neruda, much of it skilfully arranged by Crispian himself.

Suffolk Philharmonic is Suffolk’s fully professional orchestra made up of some of the finest professional orchestral musicians in the country, and the strings will provide a pleasing contrast by performing music by Bach, Mozart, and Dvorak.

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Newsletter, and including the April 2015 walks At a recent meeting of the Volunteers Committee it was decided when ever possible to include two walks each month. One longer walk, and one of a shorter nature, and where ever possible to start and finish at the same place.

This is going to be quite a challenge for us. The reason for the change has been because of requests from some of our regular walkers, some who like long walks and some who prefer shorter ones. We are a democratic organisation, and so we hope we can please everyone.

Further more to many requests we have decided to change the date of the May’s Walks to accommodate many of our regulars who would like to attend the Hadleigh Show which always seem to clash with our walks. The new date will be the next day Sunday 17th, please alter your diaries accordingly if you wish to join us.

Our walks for April will be on Saturday the 18th, they will both start and finish at Hintlesham. We will travel by bus leaving Hadleigh Bus Station (car park side) at 9.30am. On the longer walk we will walk to Somersham via the Golf Course, Burstall Village, Bullen Hall Farm Bramford, Tye Farm, Church Farm Somersham, and Somersham Village Street, we will return to Hintlesham via Somersham Park, Flowton Village, Flowton Hall, Hill Farm Burstall, Flowton Channel, Mill Farm Hintlesham, and Hintlesham Hall. This walk is 10.5 miles in length, and will take about 4hours to complete. This walk is suitable for the more able of walkers, older children, and dogs. We will return to Hadleigh by bus leaving Hintlesham at 1.33 pm. arriving back at 1.42 pm.

The shorter walk will be a circular around Hintlesham, and Chattisham. We will walk past Hintlesham Brook, Chattisham Hall, Duke Street, Hintlesham Great Wood, College Farm, Hintlesham Hall, Mill Farm, Home Wood, The Golf Course, and back to Hintlesham George. This walk is 5.5 miles in length, and is suitable for all walkers, and dogs. This walk will take about 2.5 hours to complete and should get you back to the Hintlesham Bus Stop in time for the 12.33 pm. bus to Hadleigh.

Strong shoes, or preferably walking boots should be worn as these walks can be rough and wet in places. There are some wonderful views on both of these walks, and are both worth all the effort. If you would like to make your own way to and from Hintlesham please contact me for parking instructions and times. We are hoping to recruit some more volunteers for this forthcoming season, if you are interested please contact me. We are a happy group of people!

Open Days in Hadleigh to Help Those with Hearing Loss One in six people in UK have a hearing problem, which equates locally to over 1,375 people in Hadleigh alone! In the afternoon, the children will be performing these pieces in a concert which is open to the general public and to which weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d really love you to come.

OliVen is run by Olivier and Vendulka Battais who have been carrying out the craft of quilting and felting for over 8 years. SKy Watch Eclipse David Bowie once sang the song 'life on Mars' which contained the line "is there life on Mars"? Well,Mr Bowie, had your lyrics offered Europa as an option you may very well have gone straight to the top of the class. Europa is one of the four principle Moons of Jupiter and lies at a distance of 192 million miles from the Sun. It's an icy Moon that is just a fraction smaller than our Moon, and has a rather chilly surface temperature of - 160 degrees celsius.

Discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei, along with the other principle moons, Io, Ganymede and Callisto with just a small telescop, this Moon can be viewed from your own garden with just a humble pair of say, 10x50 binoculars, and appears as a small point of light next to its more massive parent planet.

It takes almost 4 days to orbit Jupiter and thus, its motion with its siblings vary from day to day, but should anyone reading this wish to locate the moon, please contact me and I will point you into the right direction. The name Europa comes from the mythical Phoenician noblewoman Europa, who was courted

by Zeus and became the queen of Crete.

The images beautifully show the icy surface of this distant world,and in fact the surface is the smoothest in the entire Solar System.

Beneath this ice crust, which is between 6-19 miles thick, there is very strong evidence of a salty liquid ocean that has a depth of up to 60 miles and extends down to the core of the moon.

The moon has a diameter of 3,121km and so this equates to water with a volume of 3x10 (18) m3, or just over 2 times the amount of liquid water here on Earth. The potential ,as you can see is very exciting. Jupiter is however a bully on this small world. The extreme gravity of the planet pulls at the surface of Europa. These tidal forces exert huge strain on the tidally locked surface facing the planet which causes tectonic activity and so allowing the surface to be changed on a regular basis. Again, apart from Europa this phenomena is only known to occur in the Solar System on Earth.

So onto the possibility of life there. Life on the surface could not exist due to the intense radioactivity created by Jupiter. Radiation is at a level of 540 rem per day and this amount would cause extreme illness or even death to a human if exposed to that kind of dose.

But to the definition of "life". Clearly no "little green men" live here, but life could exist within the vast liquid oceans of Europa and come in the form of microbial life and live in circumstances much akin to the Earth's deep ocean hydrothermal vents, where mussels, clams and tube worms exist with no access to Sunlight. Of course, these animals respire oxygen and so are indirectly dependent on photosynthesis, but anaerobic chemosynthetic bacteria and archaea live within these environments and do not need oxygen to survive, meaning such microbial life could effectively live in the ocean of Europa. All we need now is a probe to visit Europa but sadly to date non are planned with preference being given to Mars in search for life.

Sudbury Dramatic Society Following the hugely successful 39 Steps, the next production from Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre is a much gentler affair Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee, adapted by James Roose-Evans, which is on at the theatre from Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th May at 7.45pm.

Laurie Lee grew up in a small country village during a time of change when the rural traditions of past centuries were being swept aside by the oncoming twentieth-century. This story of a boy’s bewildering childhood in a Gloucestershire village a hundred years ago has become a modern classic, has been imaginatively adapted for the stage by James Roose-Evans and is lovingly brought to you by the team that were responsible for plays such as Our Town, Candleford and Lark Rise, including Director Neil Arbon who appeared in the recent 39 Steps.

In this funny, sad, energetic and moving adaptation of Laurie Lee’s widely read book, Cider with Rosie comes with larger-than-life characters, brave and dirty deeds, music and song, excitement and discovery, shot through with a warmth and vitality that will stay with the audience, long after the lights have dimmed.

Cadbury Easy Peasy Cheese SoufflĂŠ It being almost Easter, I thought I would pay homage to the humble egg. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no use hiding just because I said the word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;soufflĂŠâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, they are easier than the myth would lead us to believe. Just ensure the lucky recipients are ready and waiting, as the key to the dish is to serve it immediately!

Ingredients 50g butter (plus extra for greasing), 25g breadcrumbs, 50g plain flour 1 tsp mustard or mustard powder, 300ml milk, 4 eggs 100g grated extra-strong cheddar Equipment: 15cm soufflĂŠ dish, saucepan, 2 large mixing bowls, wooden spoon, spatula, baking tray, large metal spoon, measuring jug, grater, electric whisk, cutlery knife.

Method Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 and place a baking tray on the middle shelf.

Butter a 15cm soufflĂŠ dish generously, sprinkle in the breadcrumbs and rotate dish to ensure the butter is evenly coated. Tip out any excess breadcrumbs.

Melt the butter over a medium heat; stir in the flour and mustard. Cook, stirring for one minute. Take off the heat and gradually stir in the milk, mixing it in thoroughly before adding more. Return to the heat and stir continuously until very thick (around 10 minutes). Transfer to a bowl and allow to cool. Crack the eggs, placing the whites into a clean bowl and stirring the yolks into the sauce.

Stir in cheddar and season well.

Use a clean whisk to beat the egg whites until the mixture stands up in peaks. (electric is best as it will make the job much quicker). Taking a metal spoon, cut in the egg whites. Do this by gently folding in the mixture in a figure of eight motion and cutting it through with the spoon. Spoon the mixture into the dish.

Run a cutlery knife around the edge to ensure the soufflĂŠ rises above the rim and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick.

Alternatively, create a baking parchment collar for the rim of the dish and place it carefully before spooning in the final mixture. Place on the baking tray and bake for 25-30 mins until the top is golden and risen and has a slight wobble.

Serve immediately with potatoes and vegetables of your choice.

The Salvation Army - Lavenham Brass In The Stixs The Lavenham Salvation Army Corps’ 3rd Annual Brass in the Stix Summer Programme commences on Saturday 25th April with a concert in the Village Hall by the Anglia Fellowship Band, conducted Bandmaster Ray Todd. The band will feature a wide range of light, easy to listen to music.

The special guest soloist will be Bram Cross of Stowmarket, who is currently making his mark as an outstanding young singer. The band’s featured soloists will be Allan Harvey (euphonium) and Ian Alderton (trombone).

Of local interest, and to be featured on the programme, will be ‘Prelude on the Hymn Tune Lavenham’ by Geoffrey Nobes, based on his original setting published to the words of ‘Lord, there are times’ by Nick Fawcett. This work is dedicated to the memory of the Late Bandmaster Derek Wilding of Lavenham, a good friend of the composer. This arrangement was first performed in June 2014 by the Kettering Citadel Band at Lavenham Parish Church. It has also recently been featured at a number of high profile concerts in the UK and has been recorded by The Salvation Army’s famous International Staff Band on ‘World of Brass’ for release in April/May. Fidelis Activity News Make & Take: Our speakerless month gave ladies an opportunity to be creative and experiment with an inordinate number of gismos and adornments which Lin Slaughter had brought along. From sparklies, automatic shape makers to iron-on animals everything was at their disposal to make the perfect greeting card. Stimulated and encouraged by Lin’s professional advice and examples on display, the results were most attractive even from members who didn’t think they had it in them.

Banner Worksheep: Mindful of the enormous number of sheep required to decorate the High Street for Hadleigh Year of the Sheep, members beavered away assembling body parts on a mini- production line culminating in the sewing machine department. A considerable number of attractive beasts was the result of their efforts. This will be one of many more worksheeps and animals to come.

Copper Kettle: To ring the changes Lunch Bunch became a Brunch Bunch when members enjoyed a freshly cooked meal which was breakfast for some and lunch for others.

Owner, Rosie Waller who was resident chef that day, efficiently produced the most delicious pancakes with maple syrup and an English-style breakfast minus the excessive fat which normally goes with that traditional dish. Granary bread and fresh coffee came too. All this in a transformed tea-room with attractive bright décor, crisp clean tablecloths, unusual ‘foodie’ gifts and friendly service. No wonder the ladies stayed so long.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The 2015 season will get underway with our opening drive and supper on Saturday 18 April hoping to carry the form of last season through to the new campaign.

The EBA Men’s team will play in Division 2 of the Ipswich and District League for the first time in our history after promotion last season. Further our Federation “A” team, which is mixed, were also promoted, as champions, to Division “E” of the Ipswich and District League of the Suffolk County Bowls Association. At the recent SCBA League Presentation Dinner they were also awarded the league’s “ Victor Ludorum” for achieving the highest average game points score over the whole season of 6.5 out of a maximum of 7.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in both those competitions.

For our open weekend on April 25 and 26 in addition to potential new members, we are also encouraging existing members to bring along a friend to try their hand at the game of Bowls. It will be a relaxed affair with qualified coaches at hand to help make the most of your first experience. Anyone is welcome whether you come with an existing member or are just dropping in to see what the game has to offer. All ages are welcome and remember the average age of the top international champions is just 29.

We are looking forward to the new season and the green is looking exceptional so, existing members get ready for April 18 and new comers why not give it a go. What is the worst that can happen?

The Chestnuts Woodturning Club based in Hadleigh holds a club night on the third Thursday of every month. In February some of our members brought in tools and jigs they individually use to get around problems or help make their lathe work easier. It was a great night sharing experiences and helping each other with ideas and money saving methods. The photos showcase some of our members handiwork.

The club has a lathe and on club night normally arranges a demonstration of some facet of woodturning from an experienced club member or a professional turner. We aim to have at least 5 professionals demonstrating a year.

Our programme is booked for the year ahead and in March Simon Hope, a professional turner from Essex, will be visiting, in April another professional, Graham Slaughter will be demonstrating how to turn a lidded box.

We have members from Hadleigh and surrounding villages, it’s a very friendly and sociable club so if you have a woodshed that is currently under utilised or you are harbouring a desire to give woodturning a go, why not come along and see us at the United Reformed Church, Community Room.

Jane Basham asks ‘Have we forgotten the Spirit of 1945?’

The day after Britain goes to the polls on May 7th will mark the 70th anniversary of V-E Day, when the surrender of Germany in Europe led to the end of the Second World War. Post-war Britain needed a plan that worked for everyone. It needed a government that offered hope and opportunity to those who had fought hard for our country but couldn't afford and often went without the very basic things in life - access to health care, decent housing, education, transport and jobs. The Labour victory in 1945 was delivered in tough times by a democracy that worked for everyone, by generations who insisted on better lives for their children and grandchildren. Yet many of the achievements it brought about are now at risk.

Have we forgotten the battle for each and every one of us to have the right to vote? Working class men from the countryside - previously considered too stupid and too poor to vote by the wealthy landowners who ran Britain marched from Glemsford to Long Melford in 1885 to use their vote for the first time. All women didn't get the vote until 1928. Some died fighting for the right. The 1945 Labour government created vital services owned by and accountable to everyone. It was elected by people who realised that leaving the provision of life’s essentials - housing, education and health - to the discretion of a wealthy elite would mean missing out on them. We face a similar threat today; the sell-off to private corporations of everything that's democratic, has a public benefit or purpose. No one asked us if we wanted a multinational company to take over Suffolk's community health services.

And when they can't profit, they just walk away - like SERCO has done.

May 7th matters because democracy matters. All over the world people are fighting for a say in their future – from Syntagma Square in Athens, through central Cairo to the corridors of the Berlaymont building in Brussels, where the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal is being thrashed out - behind closed doors.

Today's defining issue is this. Do we hold onto and continue to exercise democratic control through the influence of our votes? Or do we continue to hand over our future - and those of all who come after - to the anonymous, unaccountable power, wealth and resources of corporations and their lobbyists?

I'm sticking with democracy and I hope you will too.

One of Ipswich’s Biggest Quiz Nights Returns The Hearing Care Centre, which offers private hearing care across Suffolk and Norfolk, is again organising one of Ipswich’s biggest quiz events, to help raise money for Age UK Suffolk and Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. Now wary of people, though I might allow you to stroke me if I'm in the mood. I’m here to spill the beans on that upstart Kenneth, who has blotted his copy book. The Little Squirt led the canine chorus as Mother was being interviewed by Lesley Dolphin on BBC Suffolk. Fortunately this did not spoil the Pets Corner broadcast and two rabbits were found a home. Another time Mr. Smartipants got caught in a cat trap in the garden. He didn't make a sound as we all frantically searched for him, just when a bark would have been a good idea. Whilst on the subject of the lower species (dogs) great news - Angel and Harvey have found a new home. By the time you read this there will be new dogs waiting. Visit us to choose your canine pal and make my day, please!

We always have cats waiting for a loving home too.

Pause for Thought There are things I don’t understand about Easter...... like why the dates change from one year to another (Christmas doesn’t, after all) where Easter Bunnies fit in, and why Creme Eggs appear in January.

And another question. Why is Good Friday “good”? Isn’t it a bit strange to refer to the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus as a “good” day? Wouldn’t Bad Friday make more sense? Good Friday may have originally been “God’s Friday” that has become twisted over time. If so, I’m glad that happened – it was “good.” In fact, it was the Best Ever Day for me. I hope, if we met, you would find me a respectable person. I try to help others when I can. I like to put a little something in a charity box on occasion. But that is only a fraction of the story of my life. Plenty of things to celebrate, but not the full picture. There are also things I am ashamed of, that I wouldn’t want you to know about. In honesty, I know why the Bible says we are all sinners. I am one. But God so loved the world, He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3.16. So Good Friday really is good.

I commemorate the day Jesus died on the Cross to pay for my sin and poured out amazing love. He chose to forgive me and has become my closest Friend.

Shop manager visited Hadleigh shop ahead of cycling challenge Cycling enthusiast and charity shop manager, Gemma Merritt, brought her â&#x20AC;&#x2122;50 miles going nowhereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tour to Hadleigh this month to help raise funds before she takes on a 300 mile cycling challenge from London to Paris.

Gemma, who is manager at East Angliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospices (EACH) shop in Downham Market, is touring the charityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retail outlets across East Anglia until May 2015, setting up an exercise bike in their window. As part of her tour she visited the EACH shop in Hadleigh on Saturday 7th March. The tour seeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gemma completing 50 miles a day at every shop she visits as a way of raising funds, awareness and her training miles for the London to Parish bike ride sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s undertaking in July 2015 in aid of the charity.

Her visit to Hadleigh was a great success, she raised ÂŁ50 towards her fund.

Gemma Merritt, EACH Shop Manager, explained: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will be my second year taking part in the 300 mile London to Paris challenge. I decided to visit as many of our shops as possible and cycling in the shop windows to help increase my fundraising and to assist with my training before Julyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ride.

Hadleigh was a lovely shop to visit and I received lots of support whilst I was there. Thanks to everyone who came in and donated! â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before 2013 I had never really been into cycling, aside from riding my paper round when I was younger! Originally I planned to take part in the 2013 London marathon to raise money for EACH. Unfortunately I suffered a persistent knee injury and was advised by the doctor to hang up my running shoes. I was determined to continue my fundraising plan so decide to take up cycling instead. Whilst a 300 mile ride to Paris wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite what the doctor ordered - I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to let that stop me! â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have committed to a second year in the saddle because I have got to know a local family who use the services of EACH, as their 5 year-old son suffers from many conditions which require constant specialist care. Getting to know the family has brought home the importance of the services the charity provides and how rewarding it can be to play even a small part in raising the funds necessary to enable EACH to do the work it does. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really keen to improve on my performance on last year, taking on the same distance by a different route. My training programme is in full swing and I try to cover around 90-100 miles per week. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ride is part of a long-term training plan towards my 2016 goal of Lands End to John Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Groats also in aid of the charity.â&#x20AC;? All the valuable funds she raised will go towards helping EACH continue the work they do caring for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and supporting their families across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.â&#x20AC;? The EACH team taking part in the London to Paris bike ride will leave the UK on 22nd July and finish in Paris four days later. The challenge will see the cyclists journey approximately 300 miles through the picturesque English and French countryside, spending up to eight hours a day in the saddle. The ride finishes at the Eiffel Tower where participants will complete their challenge along the Champs-ElysĂŠesthe, which is the route the 2015 Tour de France riders will be following the very next day. Successful Slimmers declare War With Weight Two slimmer’s who transformed their lives by losing 4 ½ stone between them are using their success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives for the better too.

Sarah Riseborough and Kate Miles joined Slimming World in Hadleigh and losing weight hasn’t just meant a whole new healthy outlook on life – both of them are about to launch brand new careers too.

Mel Lea, Slimming World District Manager who has recruited the new Consultants says their new roles have never been more important. Latest figures from Public Health England show that 22% of adults living in the Ipswich/Hadleigh area are seriously overweight or obese – the equivalent of 29,500 people.

She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. It’s a privilege to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped Sarah and Kate to lose weight and enable them to help new members get to their dream target weight. We’re very excited about the support that they’ll bring to help the people of Hadleigh lose weight and get healthy.”

Sarah’s Story: Sarah Riseborough wanted to change her lifestyle and lose weight after being a soldier for 22 years which meant she was always fit and active, especially during preparation training for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Things changed when I became pregnant and suffered with health issues. After having my children it was difficult for me to regain my level of fitness. I had returned to work as a full-time solider but I also had 2 young children and a husband to take care of too. My life was so busy and I ended up eating lots of readymade meals and my weight started to pile on. I became very self-conscious and my self-esteem was at an all-time low and a friend recommended Slimming World. The warm and friendly welcome I received when I walked through the doors on that first day helped me to relax. The atmosphere at group is the best motivation and it’s a social morning too!

When she first heard about the eating plan and how much she could eat and still lose weight, Sarah thought it was too good to be true. “Being able to cook quick, easy and inexpensive meals the whole family could enjoy using food like pasta and potatoes, fish, lean meat, chicken and eggs made eating healthily together easy,” she says. Kate’s Story: Kate Miles, 26 decided to shed the pounds when she was asked to be Maid of honour and her children flower girl and page boy. “Having a goal to work towards really kept me focused” I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect, but from the minute I walked into slimming world the support I received was brilliant. Thursday nights is “me time” and hour spent with friends laughing, chatting sharing recipes and ideas. My friends and family are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight, I still eat many of the same foods that I did before but now I prepare and cook them differently, Our family favourite is Burger and slimming world chips, followed by yummy cheesecake.

I have experienced the ups and downs that can come with a weight loss journey. I completely empathise with that and I want to use my experiences to help others to have the positive and life changing journey that I have had.

Now 3 ½ stone lighter within a year and at her ideal target weight. Kate can’t wait to welcome slimmer’s old and new back to the group on the evening of Thursday 9th April.

Congratulations to Shannon Smith for achieving her RDA Bronze Certificate for Horse Care. With the help of her favourite horse Jet she was able to show Sue Diggins, the Regional Examiner, all she has learnt about the care and welfare of the horse, the tack, stable and feeds. Together with research that she did at home she produced a comprehensive folder of information to support her practical knowledge. Well done Shannon.

Shannon has been riding for several years now but each term we welcome new faces both riders and helpers, and it is a joy to see how much they enjoy coming and the benefit they derive from being part of the The Centre life.

Sarah has rejoined the team of helpers after a six month break and would like to share some of her thoughts.

“Even though I’ve again joined the Centre in the coldest time of the year, it’s great fun and very rewarding. Having previously enjoyed helping on Wednesdays the only difference I have noticed is that I think on Mondays we get more than our share of grooming to do, as some of the ponies seem to build up an extra layer of mud over the weekend! Getting to know the different characters of all the ponies is still part of the fun and with every rider you can see how using the horse as their physiotherapist helps them to relax. This week I had the joy of seeing a young disabled girl have her first ride on a real pony – it was wonderful to see how brave she was getting on the horse – and to see the trust she put in the helpers who reassured her that she could indeed ride a real horse. Once the lesson started I soon forgot that she was a new rider, as she joined in all the exercises with the other more experienced riders, and when she dismounted I saw a lovely big smile on her face and her wonder at what she had just achieved. As a regular pony leader I’m continually trying to improve my horsemanship, but my personal blind spot seems to be tying up.

So much to the amusement of my husband, I’ve been secretly practising at home with my dressing gown cords. At the half term training session one of the reasons given for enjoying being a Riding for the Disabled volunteer was getting your “horse fix”. As someone who lives in the middle of a town with a small garden with high walls, I think time spent outdoors at Shelley also gives me my essential fix of the beautiful Suffolk sky – sometimes with the added bonus of catching sight of the buzzards soaring high up over our heads. When I met a volunteer from one of the other RDA centres she asked where I helped and when I replied Shelley she said “Oh lucky you – that’s the best one” – I know I’m biased, but I think she might be right.” Sarah Rixon.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Just before the Millennium David Bellamy came up with the idea of celebrating it by planting Yew Trees in church yards. The new trees were propagated by cuttings from the oldest yews in the country, some of which were estimated to be over 2000 years old. Hadleigh decided to join in, In May 2000 I went to a special service at Horham and collected Hadleigh's Millennium Yew Tree. It was only a few inches tall, so I grew it on. In June 2004 it was planted in the churchyard and has grown slowly and steadily until recently, when a contractor tidying up the church yard, who did not know it was supposed to be left to grow into a tree, tidied it up as though it was part of a yew hedge. The result is shown in the photograph. It is about 2 foot shorter than it was, but more importantly the leading shoot has been cut off. This will make it more difficult to train in a tree shape. When it was planted it was not labelled because we did not want to attract attention to it, but maybe now we should give it a label.

In my garden I am hoping to do better than I did last year. I have nearly completed the essential pruning jobs. The apple trees, roses, grapes, blackberry and loganberry are all done. The red currant needs to be done in the next few days. The dahlias are set up to sprout, and the achimenes are replanted after their Winter rest. Moss has been a much more serious problem than usual this year. It is strange. For many years all I had was a bit of moss in the lawns, but now it covers the soil in the flower beds. It is said that ferrous sulphate in solution will kill it, and I shall try that this year. I will report on how successfully this manages the problem for me.

The 3 monthly total at the end of February was 144.8 mm (5.7") which is close to the average figure. In February the maximum temperature was 14 Cel (57F) which is typical, and the minimum temperature was -3 Cel (27F) which is about average.

In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 8 Cel ( 46 F) . Mid March ground temperature seems to be quite variable, and is usually in the range 5 to 10 Cel. Hints This months first hint concerns growing two plants that seem to be a bit out of fashion at the moment. Sweet Peas grown for exhibition require a lot of work with de-shooting, removing tendrils etc. People have forgotten that this is a hardy annual, and like all hardy annuals will grow quite well sown direct in the ground in late March or April. All it needs is something to scramble over to reward you with some nice flowers and for most varieties a beautiful smell.

They can be good against fences.

In a similar way when one goes to flower shows one sees fantastic displays of perfect dahlias. These will have been grown from cuttings and stopped, and groomed with much expenditure of time and effort, but one can get a good colourful display of dahlias in the garden by planting dormant tubers in April.

Nowadays one can get dahlias in a range of heights to suit almost any position.

Both of these plants will appreciate some organic material in the ground, and in both cases you will need to keep a sharp look out for slugs and snails which love the tender young shoots.

The second hint is to remind you to treat your Spring flowering plants well. Let the daffodils die back naturally after they have finished flowering, so that they build up bulbs to flower next year. Divide up any overcrowded clumps of snowdrops while they are still green. Prune your early flowering shrubs like forsythia, and Winter flowering jasmine as soon as they have finished flowering John Rye

Amongst the pictures in the Hadleigh Town Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Archives are three of the Hadleigh Town Band. The Large Drum has Hadleigh Town Band 1912 printed on it. Three of the pictures appear to be from the Bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early years but we do not know how long it lasted. We also have pictures from the 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of the Hadleigh Boys Band, and the drum appears in those pictures. So what happened to it and the other instruments when the Boys Band finished.

In the early sixties the Hadleigh Scouts had a band which marched through out the town leading events and also marched down the street on a Sunday before Church Parade, I am told that they also had the Hadleigh Town Band drum and instruments. Their last known resting place being a cupboard in the U.R.C. Church Hall. Can any reader give us more information on the Band for our Archives records, and does anybody know what happened to the instruments and the Hadleigh Drum.

French’s Care Haven All the horses, staff and helpers at French’s are so happy to see the spring coming, what a difference the sun makes to us all. On 16th April at The Crown Hartest there will be a Quiz Night held in aid of French’s. Our wonderful ladies Diana, Anna and Mandy have organized another quiz for us but in a different location. There will be a Fish and Chip supper offered on the night and we are hoping it will be a good night for everyone who come and join us, so pull a team together and book your tickets now. Thank you to the people who came along to support us on our curry night at The Indian Villa in Hadleigh on 5th March, a good night with good food was had by all.

French’s have gained another sponsor for a year with Horsemat Ltd (picture enclosed, Jann, Coral and the Horsemat lads). Horsemat have offered to lay rubber matting in all of our stables and replace the old bits of matting that we have in place at the moment. We are having a pony and horse stable fully fitted with the new soft EVA matting on the floors and walls, these will be used as special recuperation stables this will be perfect for housing weak and sick horses on their arrival at French’s. Horsemat are also laying new PVC tiles into our workshop, which we are re-designing and decorating so the people we help with learning difficulties have a nice room to work in, when weather conditions are not too good. The workshop will also be available for the making of arts and crafts. Kim the owner of Horsemat has also offered a £100 donation a month towards the keep of our rescued animals.

With our outgoing being staggeringly high every penny helps.

Our horse and animal rescue welcome any person or business who would like to sponsor us in any way. We can highlight your business in return by letting the media know you are helping us. Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Two Thorns and A Rose competition Weekend Mixed Texas Scramble – Two Thorns & a Rose Competition. A cold frosty morning saw the first of this year’s weekend mixed competitions.

Twelve ‘Roses’, each partnered by two ‘Thorns’, after a shotgun start, played a Texas Scramble on the Gainsborough course, each team having a stroke allowance of 10% of their aggregate handicap. The course was still very wet in places Derek Pritchard, Ian Thompson, Eileen following the overnight rain, but Hands (Ladies Captain) Bev Thompson the ground-staff worked hard to Julian Lamb (Club Captain) make all holes in play and ensuring a very enjoyable event. Not long after all the players were safely in the club house, the rain came again! The winners were Ian Thompson (Vice Captain), Bev Thompson and Derek Prichard with a score of 62.3. Second were Duncan Smith, Suzanne Shaw-Smith and Paul Lankester with 62.5 and third, Louis Freeman, Mandy Byham and Nigel Byham with 65.3.

The prizes were presented by Julian Lamb, Club Captain. The competition was followed by a meal and the presentation of prizes.

Since we last reported Gary's marathon running he now has 3 under his belt! The first race in January arrived and so did a 4.30am start for Gary and his family.

They headed down to Kent for the Viking coastal marathon. He completed the run which was 4 circuits in 4hr 21 a wonderful time.

The second race Gary had some company in the form of his training partner Karl and yet again a very early start for them both on a Thursday this time. They headed off to Walmer, Kent for the 'Marathon Day Marathon' on a day made especially for a marathon 26.02!!! I caught up with Gary the day before the race to wish him luck and asked if he intended to have a break from training afterwards? He said "just 3 days off then back training" which shows such dedication and a great commitment to raising much needed funds for our lovely small.

The third race on 14th March was a slightly later start at 8am for the Ranscombe Challenge. This was a tough marathon laden with hills and cross country trails. Gary finished this in excellent time and again was supported by his wonderful family, he also had some company along the way with his training partner Karl. New Tennis Season, New Junior Coach The new tennis season starts in April and we have some exciting news. MaryClaire Tweedy is starting up Junior Coaching in Hadleigh! Marie Claire is an LTA qualified coach and is enthusiastic about helping youngsters in the Hadleigh area to develop their tennis skills. Sessions will be at the Layham Road Sports Ground on Thursdays from 16th April. To start with there will be two sessions: 4.00 to 5.00pm for Beginners and 5.00 to 6.00pm for Improvers.

QUIZ NIGHT Hadleigh Cycling Club has unveiled plans for the town’s inaugural cycling festival which will take place on the weekend of September 19th and 20th. The festival will consist of a junior event for young cyclists on Saturday and a noncompetitive sportive for adult cyclists on Sunday.

The club is hoping to capitalise on the national and countywide interest in cycling, enthuse children and their parents, draw hundreds of cyclists and supporters to the town, benefiting Hadleigh’s community and businesses. The junior event is in its fourth year of running and it has always been very popular with younger riders and parents. It is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to receiving coaching and experience racing in a safe environment.

The sportive has been named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 16km, 50km and 100km routes will take the riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton. The registration for the sportive is now opened on British Cycling’s website and more info will be released through http://www.thegayfordflyer.info Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club said, “We believe that this weekend supports the Suffolk’s Year of Cycling initiative and links with the County Council’s ambition to be the “most active county”. “It will also help to ensure that there is a legacy for cycling in Hadleigh after we are visited by the professionals in June with the Women’s Tour and the Tour of Britain in September.”

Currently, the sportive is supported by The Pedal House, The George Public House, Sunny Day Cycleworks and Crockatt Garage.

Newton Green young players qualify for National Finals Two of Newton Green's young players have qualified for the English colleges national finals to be played at Bath Golf Club on March 27 and 28.

Connor Talbot and Ellie Aldous are both aged 16 and play off handicaps of six.

Ellie, who already represents Suffolk ladies at adult level, won the girls and Connor was runner up in the boys regional qualifying events held at Bawburgh Golf Club in Norfolk.

After an excellent win in Round 2 of the ‘Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic’ competition, the Stoke by Nayland Ladies team hopes to build on its success of the two previous years. In 2013 it reached the last eight in this prestigious national team golf competition only to be beaten by Nizels from Kent, one step away from the finals in Spain. Last year ended with defeat in Round Hannah Moul reading a putt in the Mail 5, but again another creditable on Sunday match v Rushmere GC. run. Stoke by Nayland now play Hannah was at Stoke by Nayland as a their County golf competitions in Junior and is now a scratch golfer.

Essex and enter teams in the Munro Foursomes, Silver Trophy, Harris Bowl and Bronze Shield. This means that many players have the opportunity of playing competitive golf at all levels.

The Club also ensures that all lady members have the opportunity to benefit from coaching by Head Professional Roly Hitchcock and three sessions are arranged before the county matches start. Roly and his team also support the players throughout the season with group and individual lessons.

This preparation has certainly paid off with three of the four teams reaching the knockout stages in the 2014 season, the Silver Trophy team were runners up in their competition after an exciting final at Clacton.

Our members enjoy these competitive opportunities alongside the friendly and welcoming atmosphere for golfers of all levels.
