Sudbury Dramatic Society Yes it’s Panto Time!

If you can`t afford the Caribbean this Christmas don`t despair, you can cast off for Christmas on a Tropical Treasure Island filled with the oddest pirates you have ever seen without leaving Sudbury. Yes it’s Panto Time! and this year Sudbury Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that they are bringing something a little bit different to Sudbury’s Quay Theatre with a brand new pantomime, Treasure Island written in traditional pantomime style by local authors Mike Fahie-Wilson and Bez Berry, and co-directed by SDS Panto stalwart (and last year’s Dame) Malcolm Hollister. A bold gang of pirates have navigated the River Stour to smuggle in a show that the whole family will enjoy, bringing with them plenty of traditional pantomime fare, singing and laughter. Join One-Eyed Pete, Billy Bones, Long John Silver, ‘Mrs’ Hawkins and her son Jim as they keep everyone on their toes and share out some long lost treasure! Treasure Island starts on Friday 16th December at 7.30pm and runs for a total of 22 performances, with a variety of evening and matinee performances on offer up until Sunday 1st January at 3pm. Tickets are available now from the Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com. Treasure Island is a show that crackles with plenty of fun, so come along and join in!

Generous £10,000 giveaway from award-winning lifestyle firm

An award-winning lifestyle firm is planning to donate £10,000 worth of replacement windows and doors to a community building in need of a revamp. SEH BAC, part of One Group Construction, has launched the giveaway to celebrate 45 years of trading, and is asking the public to nominate a community building that they or their community group uses. Managing Director John Savage of SEH BAC, which runs 17 show centres across East Anglia, Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, said: “We’ve been fortunate enough to have been supported by the public for 45 years and because of this we want to give something back. “We feel the best way to do so is to offer a one-off prize of what we do best – improving property. There is bound to be a community building out there that desperately needs our help. We just need to hear about it. “All it takes is a small amount of time to enter – the payoff could be great for your community building.” To take part in the competition, simply visit www.sehbac.com/community to see terms and conditions and to fill out the entry form. Closing date is 20 November 2016.

Fête to Remember!

“This Christmas our Fête de Nöel is going to be even more magical than ever” enthuses Cathy Bullen who, together with her husband Peter, run the now celebrated Boule-in French Fairs in Bildeston “we have so much to celebrate” and indeed it seems they do! “It’s now 6 years since we returned from living in Provence and starting up our French collectables business - 5 years of events in Bildeston and 2 successful years with our shop in London - a magical whirlwind of an adventure that’s far from over….but it’s not just that” she grins “I just LOVE all things glittery so it’s a wonderful excuse to over indulge on the decorating, especially as ‘French Christmas’ has a unique charm all of its own: It’s also fun that we go on into the evening so everything can be lit up for extra sparkle!” There’s no doubt that a trip to the Boule-in Fête de Nöel (Thursday 24th - Saturday 26th November) will offer you a truly unique and charming Christmas shopping experience. With all their stock authentically sourced from France they fill their barn and garden with decorative collectables and thoughtful, affordable gifts to make purchasing as well as giving an extra pleasure this Christmas. Local residents, businesses, community groups and schools came together to play Beat the Street in Sudbury and Great Cornard travelling thousands of miles in September and October. Over the past six weeks, Beat the Street has transformed Sudbury and Great Cornard into a giant walking, running and cycling game – residents travelling around the area tapping special Beat Boxes on lampposts has become a familiar sight in Sudbury and Great Cornard. Residents of all ages took part in the community health competition with local schools and organisations created teams and competed against each other to see who could travel the furthest to win some fantastic prizes. Beat the Street Sudbury and Great Cornard is an initiative run by Intelligent Health in partnership with Suffolk County Council. Taking place during Suffolk’s Year of Walking, Beat the Street is designed to inspire whole communities to get moving. Cllr Tony Goldson, Cabinet Member for Health at Suffolk County Council said: “Congratulations to each and every person who has taken part in Beat the Street. “The competition has been very much the talk of the town for the past few weeks and we’ve heard from many people who say they will miss the Beat Boxes. However, if you’ve enjoyed Beat the Street, please keep up the great work and continue to build on the great foundations that you’ve made for your health. We hope you’ve enjoyed it!”

It seems Rainy Days are here to stay

With 4 of the 5 wettest years on record happening since the year 2000 it seems that rainy days are here to stay. Gutters and downpipes that do not have the sufficient capacity to remove rainwater are liable to overflow and in older properties this can lead to water entering the fabric of the building. Deep flow guttering increases the capacity of the guttering on your property by up to 100% reducing the need for additional down pipes and preventing overflowing gutters. Hadleigh based Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to supply and fit a range colours and finishes including cast iron and PVC sourced from market leading suppliers including Heritage Cast Iron Rainwater and Deepflow Systems. Another common problem with a property’s guttering is blockages. Over a period of time a collection of leaves and moss etc can build up, reducing the gutters ability to remove rainwater to the downpipes. Using a state of the art 10 metre reach Vac system, complete with inspection camera, Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to fully clean your gutters from the safety of the ground without the need for ladders, scaffolding or articulated boom lift equipment. Contact Deep Flow Systems on 01473 879448 or 07970 828559 deepflowguttering@hotmail.co.uk

Deep Flow Gutter Systems Deep Flow Guttering increases the capacity of guttering by up to 100%, minimising the number of downpipes.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk

Just as millions of people buy a weekly lottery ticket, with the revenue earned funding good causes locally and nationally, we MPs enter our own unique type of lottery that takes place every week that the House of Commons is sitting. It's the draw to be one of the 15 MPs named on the 'Order Paper' for Prime Minister's Questions, guaranteeing us the chance to quiz the nation's leader in what remains our most high profile Parliamentary event. It is true that we can also 'bob' (i.e. rise in our seat) to try and ask a Prime Minister's Question. This is because Commons tradition dictates that questions should alternate from either side of the chamber and therefore when there are two MPs from the same party consecutively on the Order Paper, there is another opportunity to contribute. But actually being called when 'bobbing' is another lottery in itself. The last time I was drawn for the PMQs Order Paper was the first week back from party conference in early October. This winning ticket, as it were, coincided neatly with the wonderful news about significant Lottery funding awards in South Suffolk. This included £206,000 for Clare Castle Country Park to transform its green spaces, and almost £5m for Gainsborough's House Museum in Sudbury to become a 'national cultural attraction'. It was therefore a great honour to be able to raise the latter success in my Prime Minister's Question. Theresa May responded by saying that "Many people will enjoy visiting Gainsborough's House in the future as a result of the work that will be able to be done". Quite - we should hope that many more people will enjoy visiting not just Gainsborough's House but attractions across South Suffolk, as a result of this success. This will benefit our broader tourism offer which is so important to sustaining local shops across in our market towns and villages. Yet, for all the luck of the draw involved in the lottery, there is nothing lucky about organisations which put in enormous effort to make bids which then qualify for funding. I wish them a thoroughly deserved congratulations!

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Penny is my best pal but I wish she’d hurry up when we are out for a walk. This chilly weather is a shock after that lovely Summer and it’s too cold to keep stopping for a sniff! Mind you, we had a warm welcome at Pets at Home in Sudbury last month. Our collection raised £105 which will help with the heating costs this winter. Mum says if you visit us, be careful while we are burying some of the electric cables that feed the outside animals’ bedrooms. That should stop Mum’s 2am nocturnal forays, into the cold when the wind is blowing hard, to check the trees have not brought down the wires. Don’t forget, we animals hate fireworks so please consider attending a local display rather than letting off a few bangs in your back garden. I’m sure you don’t need reminding to take extra special care of your pets during Guy Fawkes celebrations? We’ve had many dogs come and go but Ollie wants me to mention Orvill and Wellington, two kittens that keep getting overlooked. Nothing wrong with them – except they are black of course – but is that such a sin? I’m fairly dark myself and I think everyone loves me so please give them a chance if you are looking for a feline pair to complete your family. Just time to remind you about our Christmas Fair, 10-3pm at the Old School, Long Melford, 20th November. The usual huge selection of gifts, crafts, glass, jewellery, boxed games and jigsaws plus mens, pets and nature stalls. Try our Parcel Game, Tombola and Raffle, have a snack and go home ready for the festive season! Free parking, 50p adult entry. All that talk of Christmas is making me shiver so it’s back to my electric duvet for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts is preparing for its 95th year and the 2017 Syllabus is now available

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Holmes and Hill for generously supporting the 2017 Sudbury Festival. This action-packed event begins with the Dance Section on the 11th February. The Festival welcomes talented people from all age groups from a wide area of East Anglia. Some are experienced performers, but we welcome those who wish to enter for the first time. Last year there was a slight increase in entries from schools in the area but we would like to encourage more schools to enter. There are a large number of cups to be won and there are non-competitive classes for those who prefer them. The Adjudicators, who are all highly qualified in their various fields, give to all performers a constructive and helpful appraisal. The Festival dates are listed below: Dance – 11th - 15th February at the Ormiston Acadamy Music – 28th February - 5th March at the Delphi and Speech and Drama – 9th - 13th March at the Delphi. Finishing with a wonderful Concert on the 19th March showcasing some of the talented performers in all three disciplines. The syllabus and entry forms are available at Tourist Information Centres and Performing Arts shops in Sudbury, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Colchester. Closing date for entries - 12 November 2016

Sunday Special!

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that Thomas Isaac, one of Britains up and coming cello superstars, will be their soloist in Haydn’s 2nd cello concerto in their concert on Sunday 26th November. Thomas began playing cello at the age of 6, and now studies at the Royal Academy of Music where last year he won first prize for his performance of Bach’s Suite for Cello no 2. He performs with many leading orchestras as Principal Orchestral cellist both in the UK and Europe and this year appeared in a BBC Proms Extra concert. As a soloist Thomas has performed in many venues including the Wigmore Hall. In our concert Thomas will be performing Haydn’s 2nd cello concerto, a true classic in which the cello sings and dances with graceful and lilting melodies, playing a surprising number of passages in soprano range. This piece challenges the most brilliant of cellists, stretching the instrument to its fullest capacity. Sudbury Symphony Orchestra will also be performing Schubert's 9th symphony The Great Symphony in C major. The symphony was almost lost to the world until Robert Schumann discovered it and recognised it for what it was. The symphony has wonderful tunes and movement as though riding through countryside, here trotting, then a canter, then a pause to take in the view. There is a spontaneity in its grand development. A rich and immensely enjoyable musical journey. We hope you will join us for a spirited and inspiring musical evening. Tickets: Adult £12, Child £2 Available mid October from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury and Sudbury Tourist Information (library) email: tickets@sudburysymphonyorchestra.com A limited number of tickets will be available on the door. www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com

Eye health initiative goes down a treat

A week-long initiative in Suffolk and Essex to raise awareness of how healthy eating can improve sight has been hailed a ‘great success’. Members of staff from opticians in Sudbury, Ipswich, Southwold, Halstead, Leigh-on-Sea, Beccles and Haverhill took to the streets to hand out healthy treats and educational information to members of the public. More than 200 people enjoyed tasty delights such as healthy juices, smoothies and jellies and were given bags of leafy greens to take away. The week-long initiative was organised by the Observatory Group, which trades under the names of Observatory the Opticians and Wardale Williams. It was held as part of National Eye Health Week (NEHW) which sees eye care charities, organisations and health professionals from across the UK joining together to promote the importance of eye health. The optical group decided to focus on the importance of a good and healthy diet to optimise eye health. Joanna Williams, one of the group’s senior optometrist, said: “The initiative was really well received by the public. We engaged with people of all ages who were very interested to learn how the high anti-oxidant value of many ingredients can help the eye by reducing cell degeneration. Key chemicals such as lutein and zeaxanthin found in leafy greens and fruit and veg can significantly aid eyesight. There is also evidence to suggest regularly eating such foods may slow or prevent age related macular degeneration (AMD) – the leading cause of loss of vision in the UK. Our treats were very popular with the public which allowed us to provide a fun way to distribute a very serious message.”

Sudbury Choral Society

Melodic Modern Music are not words you normally associate with one another but on Sunday 20th November, Sudbury Choral Society is putting on a concert of Modern Choral music that belies this commonly held view. The concert includes choral music by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeila whose ethereal sounds are causing a sensation on Classic fm at the moment; along with stalwarts of English music, composers John Rutter, Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams and George Dyson. As an extra treat we also have 3 solo songs by Claude Debussy with harp accompaniment. The choir is supported by a string orchestra and features East Anglian Soprano Laura Morgan and local harpist Helen Sharp. St Peter’s Church, Market Hill Sudbury Sunday 20th November 2016, 7:30 pm - Doors and bar open at 7pm Adults £10; 11-18’s £5; Under 11’s free

A Suffolk business woman who founded a successful counselling service is in the running for a prestigious national award. Glenda Roberts of ExploringU Counselling - which has well-being centres in Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds - has been named a finalist in The Best Business Women Awards. The awards were created by Debbie Gilbert, a multi-award-winning ‘Mumpreneur’ who has been running small businesses since 1999. The nationally recognised awards aim to recognise talented and dedicated female entrepreneurs who not only run successful businesses but in many cases also juggle the needs of their families. The awards are designed to recognise the achievements of women across a wide range of business categories across the UK. Ms Gilbert said: “‘We are delighted with the number of entries this year, which came in from all over the UK. This is a tough competition judged by business experts. To be a finalist is a major achievement. I would like to congratulate Glenda on her achievements.” Ms Roberts has been nominated in the Best Health & Wellness Business Women category of the awards. She was selected after guiding Exploring U, which also has practices in Colchester, Saffron Walden, Harold Wood and Hatfield Peveral. to leaders in its specialist fields of psychotherapy and rehabilitation. “I am thrilled to have been put through as a finalist as ExploringU Counselling has already won two awards this year in recognition of our excellent work within the community. We aim to continue our excellent work and connect with more people that could benefit from our professional services.”

Sue Ryder team up with Morrisons in Hadleigh

Last week, staff and volunteers from Sue Ryder in Sudbury, teamed up with their local Morrisons in Hadleigh, to help raise money in celebration of Hospice Care Week. Laura Sargent, Head of Recruitment, Sue Ryder said: “We had a great day collecting at Morrisons in Hadleigh, Suffolk. Thanks to Morrisons Community Champion Lorna McGill who helped us arrange the fundraiser. Customers and staff were extremely generous and helped to raise over £100 in donations. Thank you to everyone who came by to say hello and donated.” Morrisons stores across the UK joined together to celebrate Hospice Care Week, the national annual awareness week which recognises the amazing work of hospices in the UK. Alongside fundraising collections, the supermarket stocked a special Sue Ryder bouquet of flowers which sold out in less than two weeks. Warburtons are also giving their support to Morrisons’ national charity partner by making a donation, each time a customer buys a nine-pack of Warburtons crumpets. So enjoy a hot toasted crumpet this month and you could be helping to provide incredible hospice care and support to thousands of families. Morrisons Raise a Smile partnership with Sue Ryder has raised over £6 million, helping Sue Ryder to provide over 123,500 extra hours of incredible care a year, supporting families across the UK facing the most difficult times of their lives. 12

Sudbury Mayor’s Report On Sunday as I was driving home to Sudbury from Needham Market, I was so aware of how fortunate I am to live in this beautiful county. The autumnal colours on the trees against the ever changing sky was just breath taking. So often we rush through each day without appreciating all the good and precious things in our lives. My time as Mayor is such an eye opening experience. I have met and will continue to meet so many delightful people, from a little five year old who asked me if we had any dinosaurs in the Town Hall! To listening to the memories of residents in their nineties. We had great evening at the Town Hall when the winners of The Pride of Sudbury Competition .Another opportunity to meet residents who have made a real effort with their gardens and allotments. I had a meeting with our Senior Community Warden, Sue Bennett and Greg Bishop. Hopefully from this meeting we will create a group of residents who will try to have a real push to keep our streets and verges cleaner. Already Sue and Greg spend a lot of time keeping the town clean, they have some excellent ideas and initiatives. I must give Ethan, who is only seven a mention, he has a special cart provided by Ridgeons, the area around Woodhall is much cleaner thanks to Ethan. Woe betide anyone silly enough to throw their rubbish. Town Council and Sudbury Rotary are organising a litter pick at the end of this month everyone welcome. We meet at Tesco on Saturday 29th at 10.30. I was invited to a retirement lunch for Derek Howells at the Christopher Centre. He has given many years of selfless service in creating and supporting the centre. There is a book in the centre that gives the history and background of the building all researched by Derek. A fascinating record of this beautiful old building. “Sudbury Remembers the Somme” organised by The Friends of St Peter’s was a brilliant tribute to the many brave men who gave their lives. Poems were read and extracts from the book “Our Glorious Dead“ written by Valerie Herbert and Shirley Smith. The bagpipes were played with great skill by Trisha Drawbridge. It was the most poignant yet beautiful event I have ever attended. We are nearing the special time in November when we remember all those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom and those who are living with life changing injuries from war. I was given this very sad fact by Colin Smith the secretary of Sudbury British Legion. In 2012 forty four British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan but fifty serving soldiers and veterans took their own lives in the same year. It is vital that the British Legion continues to be fully supported to reach out to those who are still suffering physically and mentally. The Sudbury Royal British Launch will be outside the Town Hall on 29th October. There will be tea and coffee in the Mayor’s Parlour afterwards, everyone welcome. Sue Ayres, Sudbury Town Mayor

News from Sudbury Library

At the AGM of the IPS (The organisation that manage the Suffolk Libraries) another successful year was reported by the Chief Executive Alison Wheeler. All libraries in Suffolk remaining open and many new projects are in the pipe line. A very well attended quiz was held by The Friends, with the great help of our Quiz master Jim McMillan. The money raised will be reinvested in the Library. On the 3rd November we shall be holding ‘IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY’ a talk and exhibition (this subject was requested by a visitor to a previous talk) I hope he will be there! Tickets for this event are on sale at the Library priced £6 to include refreshments. In the lead up to Christmas there will a seasonal raffle on offer in the Library, the profits going towards the long awaited public toilet for use of the Library users. The fund raising events are all to improve the facilities in the Library and to keep the building of the Old Corn Exchange in the public eye. M. Lewis

Everyone has their poison. Mine just happens to be Gin & Rum. Not together! Gin has grown massively over the last ten years and, in the last two years, has particularly catapulted into everyone’s mind via TV, advertising and festivals dedicating prime exposure to the heavenly juniper nectar. Over fourty five new gin distilleries have been set up in the UK over the past few years alone and our mission is to keep you, the gin loving consumer, upto-date with what’s new, what botanicals are being used, fun ways of tasting gin and where to buy it. GinPunch.com was set up to do two things: Champion small batch (non-supermarket) craft gin from around the UK and educate gin consumers (old and new) quickly and in a light-hearted way without having to read pages of elitist and sometimes condescending text. One of our missions is to get you to SHARE TASTE. Like most life experiences, it’s generally better to share, so we have put together a selection of gin hampers and boxes containing three bottles of assorted craft gin, two great mixers and a packet of gourmet G & T popcorn. Our point of difference is that our bottles are 100ml rather than the usual 30ml or 50ml miniatures so you have four pub measures in each bottle, giving you more than enough to share your tasting experiences. Whether you prefer a zingy citrus hit, a herby savoury flavour or a spicy explosion in your mouth we have all the information to help you make your decisions and an on-board shop so you can instantly order what takes your fancy. With virtually every county in the UK having its own local brand (there are three in Suffolk) and each using its own unique botanical formulations and distilling techniques, you have a wonderfully wide gin palate to choose from and GinPunch.com are there to help you find out what’s available. November at The Bridge Project

I sometimes think that The Bridge Project is one of Sudbury’s best kept secrets! Perched at the top of Gainsborough Street we have a lot going on, behind our admittedly colourful façade! We have a lovely cafe serving really great homemade food, and behind that we also provide support and activities for people with learning disabilities, a mental health support group, a lunch club, film and supper nights, dementia support, paint your own activities and fabulous food to name but a few. This month is going to be one of the most exciting for us in a long time, we will be getting in some practice in our new commercial kitchen in the Pavilion building, many thanks to The Postcode Lottery, in preparation for the expansion of our popular lunch time hot meal deliveries to Long Melford, Acton and Waldingfield next month. Get in touch if you’d like more information about meal deliveries locally. Don’t forget to come in for coffee, a snack, or lunch…or all three - and see for yourself, and also get your orders in for Christmas cakes, mince pies, sausage rolls and the like. And here’s a couple of dates for your diary..16th November come and watch Remember over afternoon tea, or with supper, 3rd December get your unique gifts and cards at our Christmas Fair. Business Glass Collection Service Takes Off

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ new kerbside Business Glass Collection Service has begun collecting glass from businesses across the districts. From June this year, the councils have offered businesses a service that collects waste glass for recycling rather than allowing it to join general waste that is disposed of at the Energy-from-Waste plant at Great Blakenham. New specialist collection vehicles are operating across the districts, offering the service to any business that presently disposes of a large amount of glass with its general waste. Dedicated two-wheel bins, with 240 litre capacity, are provided to businesses to make the kerbside collection as easy and efficient as possible. This specialist service ensures that more glass is recycled and that more businesses can dispose of their waste in a green manner while keeping their costs low. Although the service is aimed primarily at high glass use businesses in the hospitality sector, such as pubs, food serving enterprises and wedding venues, it is available to any business that disposes of large amounts of glass. The service can be purchased independently of the established Business & Trade waste collection service. Existing Business & Trade clients can add glass collection to their subscription. Businesses interested in subscribing can find details online at: http://www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/waste-services/trade-waste/trade-waste-and-recycling/ or: http://www.babergh.gov.uk/waste-services/trade-waste/trade-waste-and-recycling/ The service is also available for one-off events that have to dispose of a large quantity of bottles and jars. By offering a dedicated Business Glass Collection Service the councils aim to reduce waste costs for local businesses. It will help their economic growth and profitability while also increasing recycling across the districts. Cllr Frank Lawrenson, Babergh District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “With so much waste being produced in the modern economy, it is vital that we recycle as much as we possibly can. This new service offers an easy, affordable way for businesses to ensure their glass waste can be reused, while also providing our councils with income to reinvest in our waste services. By signing up, clients are helping their business, the environment and their community all at once.” Cllr David Burn, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Glass recycling is important but we understand that some businesses don’t have easy access to suitable facilities. This new service provides businesses with the opportunity of ensuring their glass is disposed of responsibly and at the same time enables them to play an important part in helping to protect the environment.” This new service is a service available only to businesses. Residents can dispose of household glass at any of the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) or bottle banks across the districts. Find your nearest HWRC on the Recycle Now website: www.recyclenow.com/local-recycling

By Sue Wardropper, Family Law Solicitor The shops are already displaying the first signs of Christmas by promoting tins of our favourite chocolate treats as well as offering deals if Christmas grottos are booked early. For parents who have separated the idea of Christmas approaching can bring added anxiety and worry especially if it is the first Christmas the family will have experienced living in separate households. So what steps can be taken to try to avoid an otherwise stressful Christmas? It goes without saying that planning ahead will help. A last minute court application will not be high up on anyone’s Christmas list. However, in past years I have spent the days leading up to Christmas in court acting for parents who have not been able to reach an agreement over Christmas holiday arrangements. So planning ahead really can assist. Try to reach an agreement about the Christmas holiday period as much in advance of the event as you are both able to. Consider having an agreement in place with the other parent to alternate Christmas so that the children can spend Christmas Day with each parent on alternate years. If communication between you is difficult then consideration should be given to attending mediation to help you both reach an agreement. We can refer you to a local specialist mediator if you are considering this. It is important to remember that even if the children are not with you on Christmas day you can make the days you spend with the children over the Christmas holiday period just as special and the children will love the chance to have two Christmas days. Ensure the time you each spend with the children is special but don’t try to outdo each other with presents. Try to discuss together the presents the Children would like and agree how the presents are to be handed over. Maintain family traditions you have established as a family where possible. It might not be a tradition you have known yourself as a child, but it may be one that the Children are used to. Always, of course, remembering to leave out food for the reindeers! If you are worried about raising the issue of Christmas with your former partner or spouse consider making an appointment with myself or one of my colleagues in Holmes & Hills’ specialist team of Family Law solicitors. Holmes and Hills offer an initial fixed fee consultation for a reduced fee. This meeting will enable you to discuss your particular concerns with one of our specialist family lawyers who will offer advice and guidance specific to your circumstances and needs. And finally to those who celebrate the season, may I be the first to wish you a stress free and Happy Christmas. Florabelle’s Vintage Tea Rooms

Serendipity at 38 North Street Sudbury has had a change of ownership and major changes have been made to the business. Starting with the name change it is now known as Florabelle's Vintage Tea Rooms. Owned by Florence Ousley and jointly managed by herself and her daughter, Belinda Ferguson, the name Florabelle’s is a combination of both of their names. The menu has been extensively overhauled and the cakes and scones are of exceptional variety and quality. Florence’s grandfather was a Master Baker in Scotland in the 19th Century and all of the recipes used in Florabelle's were his and are not published anywhere. The food and beverages are served on antique china - much of which are family heirlooms - and in a manner which befits a vintage tea room. Upstairs the premises are being renovated to accommodate extra tables and a private room is available for parties - it is advisable to book well in advance. Although the business only changed hands at the beginning of September it is already proving immensely popular and the lovely weather in September was a huge drawcard to the pretty garden at the back of the premises and the tables were full all day. A “Ladies Who Lunch” with a weekly luncheon is so popular that there is already a waiting list for several weeks ahead. Vintage Afternoon Teas for Young Ladies between the ages 9 to 13 is a new trend for celebrating birthday parties and they are served using the same antique china - although it is mostly juice poured from the pretty tea pots and not one of the many teas available. Florabelle's are also fortunate in having Bomb Cosmetics and the department is well-stocked. The Christmas range is fabulous but although it is all in stock it will not be on the shelves until the latter half of November. We look forward to having many more visitors and making many more friends so please feel free to wander in - even if it is just to browse. There are so many unusual items on the stalls that you won’t find on the high street - all under one roof – it’s an easy way to sort all your Christmas presents. All entry costs, plus 10 per cent of the stall takings go to your local hospice. “It’s organised by a team of dedicated volunteers, who give up their time for free and has raised more than a staggering £138,000 for the hospice in total.” Entry is £5, payable on the door, which all goes to St Elizabeth Hospice to provide local care to more than 2,000 patients and their families living with progressive illnesses in East Suffolk. St Elizabeth Hospice is a local charity which costs millions of pounds a year to run and it relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs. Peter Thorogood... “The Health Service does not have Money Problems, it has Management Problems” Now I realise that the following will be deemed not only controversial but also downright heretical. There is a current, very popular campaign to increase funding of the NHS, to which the so called silent majority agree. However, any person from the private sector who has owned their own company can confirm that the only result of investing one’s money into a failing exercise is bankruptcy. Before we get over emotive lets look at the facts. The NHS is the second biggest employer in Europe and is mis-managed by clowns, completely undeserving of the gross management salaries and perks we hand them. Many are at best incompetent, a sickness apparent throughout our public sector. Still not convinced that graft and greed are not normal practice? Our fair town of Sudbury has lost two hospitals replaced by but a clinic. Peoples Park, grabbed by the NHS under threat of compulsory purchase from our own Common Lands Trust for less than £900,000, as a site for a promised hospital, now developed as housing along with St. Leonard’s and Walnutree whilst developers pocket millions to the detriment of our townspeople. And our ever compliant councillors give them carte blanch. So should Parliament chuck our money at this rotten to the core establishment? No, it is their job to sort it out. It is not only we, the taxpayer, who are affected, but also those junior, dedicated staff, nurses, porters and others who have to watch this disgusting misappropriation of funds whilst patients suffer. And now to Eatanswill, or should it be Toytown? So besieged Babergh Council, facing a peasants revolt and a petition signed by over 6,000 citizens attempt, yet again to present their reasons for moving the bus park to Girling Street. However, who am I to question their judgement? But now their ineptness is unbelievable. They produced a printed survey for all to complete following their public presentation. That is if one could obtain a copy, I had some difficulty as apparently you had to go next door, and its format is as unprofessional as their ignorance of the democratic procedure. The exhibition, open only on weekdays and starting two days before formal notification in the press. Many questions had been inadvertently omitted making the whole presentation comical and useless, not fit for purpose, and a complete waste of the ratepayer’s money. However, some pointless questions have provoked much mirth, and I quote: 18) Have you been identified as transgender? 22) Which of these groups do you consider you belong to? Many races shown including English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish and traveller. 23) Your Religion or Belief from Baha’i to Sikh. And, best of all 24) What is your sexual orientation, from Bisexual to “prefer not to say”? What the hell has lot of politically correct time wasting got to do with moving a bloody bus park. They should identify which underemployed so called public servant composed this lot, and which councillor signed it off! I declare myself a miserable old git of mixed race, too aged for any sexual preferences, who just wants a bus to travel on to a goodly lunch with chums of a like mind, but there was no box for me to tick as such. Off for a jar with others of a clinically insane bent! All the usual to mandpthorogood@gmail.com, Peter Thorogood

The crocus planting project is by now well underway and by next Spring you will see purple crocuses in a variety of locations at the entrances to the town, in Siam Gardens, at the Railway station and the Health Centre. They will also be coming up in the grounds of our local schools and we hope they will not only provide a colourful environment but will also raise awareness of Rotary’s on-going campaign to eradicate polio. We are closer than ever to wiping out this terrible disease and Rotary has helped to immunise 2.5 billion children globally since 1985. Rotary will be very busy in the weeks leading up to Christmas and we look to you for your support both to come along to the events and enjoy them and to help our Rotary charities. For many years, Santa’s Grotto Caravan has been a familiar sight around Sudbury outside the Town Hall and outside the supermarkets in the days leading up to Christmas. In fair weather and foul, countless children each year have enjoyed the excitement of a visit to see Santa and parents and the public overall have been generous in their contributions to Rotary’s charities. Santa will, as usual, also be at the Christmas Lights Switch-on 25th November in a very special grotto outside St Peter’s on Market Hill. But from then on Santa and his helpers will have a brand new grotto inside Sudbury Library on Market Hill on selected days beginning on December 10th up to December 21st, (Days and times will be advertised at the Library and in the Press from 1st December days and times can also be found on the Sudbury Rotary Club website). Each child will receive a small but quality present. There will be small charge and meanwhile Santa’s elves will also be outside the library patrolling Market Hill to welcome you into the Library! The LIbrary is of course also the place to buy those Charity Christmas cards and there will numerous Christmas events and activities going on there during this period. We are grateful to the Library and our sponsors for making Santa’s new location in the Library possible. The ever popular Schools Concert will be held on 5th December followed by the Christmas Tree Festival in St Peters from 6th to 11th December. Don’t miss this annual festive treat. If you have never been, make a vow to come this year – as you walk into St Peters and see the 90-or-so decorated trees it is truly enchanting. At the festival we will once again have a Tree of Memories and people are invited to write a message on a card in memory of a loved one and hang it where they choose on the tree. If you would like to more information about any of these events or would like to help us, or learn more about Rotary, please get in touch. We meet every Monday at the Mill Hotel at 12.30pm, for lunch and a chance to socialise. As well as our lunchtime meetings, we hold both fund-raising and fun events (often the same thing!) throughout the year. If you would like more information contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our website. http://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=503 or Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

Are you a website whizz? Could you help a local community group?

Streetwatch are a volunteer community group operating in Sudbury and Great Cornard. Streetwatch is run by local residents who want to promote good citizenship and support a stronger community, whilst empowering the community to take ownership of their public spaces through high-visibility patrols. They are looking for someone with Wordpress experience to provide technical support to their website on a voluntary basis. It would not take up too much of your time, and you would be supporting a significant, growing volunteer group in your community. Please note that due to the nature of Streetwatch’s work, a police vetting check would need to be undertaken. Please email suffolkstreetwatch@suffolk.pnn.police.uk for further information on the above role, or about joining Streetwatch.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

This month I want to pay tribute to one of the herd that is retiring. He is black like me, so I feel very sad to see him go. Jet has been here for 15 years, he’s a big gentle giant who loves company and he’s clever: not only did he give our riders wonderful lessons on his body, he could drive! Not a car, you understand, he pulled a carriage for those people who couldn’t sit on horseback any more but still wanted to, and they loved being able to get out and about with him. Poor fellow now has arthritis so he can’t work. He is living in Lindsay with one of our volunteers who has a young family. They have a pony and 2 Shetlands to keep him company, and all he has to do is rest, eat, sleep, and, well, you can guess! I hear Lyn shedding a tear for her big boy; she is bravely trying to find his replacement now and I shall introduce it to you when she’s been successful. Jet’s team of Driving enthusiasts has also retired. We hope one day we shall find some young blood to support this life enhancing activity but meanwhile the normal riding continues a-pace and everyone is very busy; I’m at full canter myself and loving it. The arena looks really jolly from what I can see of it. We have been supported by a local charity set up to help young people in need in the Stowmarket area: AJ’s Legacy. They gave us £300 towards new poles for bending exercises in the arena. These have coloured saucers and hooks on which the instructors hang various objects. The poles are strong and stable, far easier to carry than the old ones so the volunteers love them too. A big THANK YOU to Jayne and Martin Jones who set up the Legacy in their son Aiden’s memory; we are so grateful. Who likes grass cutting, or hedge cutting I wonder? You don’t have to go near a horse to help at The Shelley Centre; our maintenance team would love to welcome more men (I can be sexist, I’m a simulator) so if you are looking for exercise in a good cause, here’s where to come! Ellie Aldous becomes Assistant Professional Trainee

A young Suffolk golfer has moved from the junior ranks in a bid to make a career for herself as a professional. Newton Green’s Ellie Aldous, 18, has become a Professional Golfers’ Association trainee, and is working as an assistant at the Bury St Edmunds Golf Range under professional Andy Goodridge. A former Suffolk junior captain, she has been in the full Suffolk women’s squad for four years, but will no longer qualify to play competitive golf in the amateur game. It means next year she will be unable to team up with Newton’s Alice Barlow to defend the Suffolk Haskell Trophy, which they recently won for the second time in four years. Aldous has been working at the Bury range for some time, and recently left West Suffolk College, where her studies included gaining a triple distinction in sports sciences. She said: “I have always wanted to become involved in the sport as a professional, and would like to see my future as a coach, rather than aiming for the professional playing circuit. However, I will cut my teeth on pro-ams and see how my game goes from there.” Aldous will now be playing off scratch, and as the Bury range does not have a course, she expects to continue working on her game from Newton. With Barlow, who currently holds the course record, the pair has been involved in leapfrogging each other to bring down the women’s record. Aldous hit the national headlines eight years ago as a 10-year-old when she beat a 100-plus field of adults to win Newton’s prestigious Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver, and for a number of years was in the national junior training squad.

Stoke by Nayland win Curry Cup

Back Row: Matt Eaves, Karl Cansdale, Ian Thompson, Richard Cross, Rob Benson Front Row: Paul Champ, Dean Brace, Nick Lee, Derek Prichard, Chris Guy, Don Wiggins Tim Dickens. Played in earlier rounds: Ian Smith, Richard Bland, Julian Lamb Stoke by Nayland Club Captain, Ian Thompson, is celebrating a double success for his 2016 teams after they added the Curry Cup to the Norman Plum Trophy, all in the space of two weeks. The final, against Fynn Valley, was played at Colne Valley where the course had been perfectly prepared with the greens being hand cut. Their Club Captain, Jerry Carrow, welcomed the finalists; neither club had reached a Curry Cup final before. As with the semi final Stoke had a strong start and were 4-2 up after the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles also went well for Stoke with eight wins and a half. The victory was secured when Don Wiggins holed a five foot putt on the 16th hole, 12.5 points to 5.5 points being the final score. Curry Cup Captain, Paul Champ, thanked all his squad for the part they had played in winning the cup for Stoke by Nayland. Jerry Carrow in his speech complimented both teams for the sportsmanlike way all the games had been played and how good it was to have a new name on the cup. So Stoke by Nayland have finished the season in style with two trophies and now look forward to a successful time again next year.
