Business community rallies to back charity ball The ball is being organised by 40 year-old Sudbury man Adrian Stohr, who lost eight stone in less than a year following his father’s death. Mr Stohr, who is taking on the Brighton Marathon, just a week prior to taking part in the London Marathon, is aiming to raise thousands of pounds for Children with Cancer UK. The father-of-three has already raised £7,000 for the charity via taking part in marathons and an Adrian Stohr with the charity ball earlier charity ball held in 2014. posters and tickets Mr Stohr hopes the second charity ball being held in June at the Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel, will take the amount he has raised above the £10,000 mark. A number of local businesses – including Stag and Doe Jewellers, cleaning and maids service Girl Fridays, The Loft restaurant, Wardale Williams opticians, The Comfortable Cow bar, Juniper Flowers, Floors and Snores, Mindbody Performance personal trainers, Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Course and Peake Spa – have now donated prizes to a fundraising raffle being held as part of the evening. The event is already being sponsored by Indigo Ross printers, the Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa and Patrick Lowman PR. Mr Stohr said: “I have been really touched by the support I have received from the Sudbury business community, the response has been amazing. I have already received a number of prizes from local business and several more have indicated they would be willing to donate a prize and I am just waiting for confirmation. These prizes will help us to raise more money on the night.” Just weeks after his father’s death from a diabetic condition in 2011, Mr Stohr was diagnosed as clinically obese and warned he could die if he didn’t change his lifestyle. The warning sparked Mr Stohr to embark on a punishing exercise and diet schedule which saw him lose eight stone in weight. His remarkable transformation saw him complete the London Marathon in April 2013. Mr Stohr’s story captured the imagination of the media and the BBC has featured his training and fundraising activities on a number of occasions. “As a father-of-three I decided I wanted to support a children’s charity via my fundraising activities and that is why I support Children with Cancer UK”, he said. The black tie and posh frocks charity ball is being held on Saturday, June 11 starting at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £55 each or £500 for table of ten. The cost includes a pre-dinner drink, a three course sit down meal and live music from renowned tribute band The Committed. There will also be a raffle and a silent and live auction which is being supported by a number of celebrities. To buy tickets or to find out more about the event email Adrian Stohr at Adrian.stohr@sky.com or telephone 01787 310945 or 07886 587275. Charity to celebrate 20 years of Mental Health Recovery in Sudbury. A mental health charity is marking 20 years of Making Recovery Reality in Sudbury with a special public event in May. Richmond Fellowship, part of Recovery Focus the new national group of mental health and substance support charities, provides both community and supported housing services in the area. The organisation launched its Sudbury supported housing project in 1996 operating out of the Christopher Centre. Now in 2016, the service is based on Queens Road and forms part of Suffolk Recovery, with neighbouring projects in Stowmarket and Coastal. The event is taking place during Mental Health Awareness Week in St Peters Church on Friday 20th May from 10am-2pm. An art exhibition, a pop-up Sparky’s Café, chit chat group, stalls, activities and information areas will all be showcased. There will also be a chance to grab a selfie with a giant 5 foot Sparky – the red figure which features in Richmond Fellowship’s logo. Those exhibiting at the event include local partners Suffolk Family Carers, Macmillan Cancer Support, Sudbury VASP and Healthwatch Suffolk. Richmond Fellowship has been working hard to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health through its community involvement with World Mental Health Day activities on the market, Sudbury on Show and talks in Sudbury Library – plus grassroots fundraising at events including the Sudbury Fun Run. Matt Webb, community link worker at Richmond Fellowship says: “Our 20 year anniversary celebrations will shine a spotlight on the outstanding work our staff and those using our services achieve every day. The event is open to members of the public and we’d love to see as many former staff and people we’ve supported over the years attend as possible.” For more information about the event, please email matthew.webb@richmondfellowship.org.uk or follow @RF_Suffolk on Twitter.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I am very proud to support a Government that on 1st April introduced the brand new National Living Wage. In the Babergh district alone approximately 1,600 workers saw their wage rise to £7.20 per hour. There have been two main concerns about this policy. On the one hand, some have said it is not really a ‘living wage’ because it is not generous enough; others have rightly emphasised the cost to businesses. Just to put the amount of the new wage into context, it will mean a £900 annual cash increase for a full-time worker on the current National Minimum Wage. However, the true test of how generous the National Living Wage is can surely best be proven by international comparison. Comparing purchasing power between countries is notoriously difficult but the Economist, one of the most respected publications on financial matters, uses a ‘Big Mac Index’ – crudely, it’s about how many Big Macs you get for your buck, so to speak. Using this index to compare European countries, the UK’s new National Living Wage, comes second only to Luxembourg. Of course, generosity comes at a price which is ultimately borne by employers and, where the cost increase can be passed on, their customers. I have been contacted by lots of businesses who are concerned about the cost and as a small business owner by background I sympathise. However, we cannot have it both ways – a wage that is generous and at the same time not costly. Our country has long had an effective minimum wage through the benefits system. In the long term, this measure should reduce benefit dependency and increase productivity per head. Ultimately, there is no point denying that businesses are going to have to bear this cost, but overall, I believe it would have been politically impossible after the devastating impact of the 2008 recession to let low pay drift ever lower. The challenge is to build a stronger economy overall that can carry this cost and deliver sustainable higher wages for all.

Between 13th and 28th May Sudbury will come alive with art! Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, Winch and Blatch, The Angel Wine Bar and The Art and Framing Centre, artists living in and around Sudbury have been given the opportunity to display their work as a prelude to the ever popular Suffolk Open Studios event which takes place throughout June and when Artists Around Sudbury have their Art Trail weekend on the 4th and 5th June when all ten artists and makers open their studios to the public on the same two days - be sure not to miss this golden opportunity! Flyers with details of all the artists taking part will be available at various locations around Sudbury including Gainsborough's House, Tourist Information Centre and the Quay Theatre and you can find out more about them and their work on Saturday 28th May when they will be there to meet you in the Market Square. Judith Glover, one of the artists involved says "we invite you to visit our studios and find out what inspires us, chat about our work and see where we create our art. Sudbury is a great place for creatives to live and we are thrilled to be so warmly supported by the local community". More information can be found at http://www.suffolkopenstudios.org/artist-trails

When someone writes a will, they are entitled to leave their estate to whoever they choose, be that their relatives, friends, charity or even their pets. An important part of the Solicitors job is to ensure that they have fully considered who they might have some moral obligation to included, before they confirm their instructions. It is often said that money should be left either sideways or downwards. That is to children, grandchildren and sometimes siblings. If parents are included (leaving it upwards), it may be that the parents already have Inheritance Tax issues of their own, so the gift could effectively end up having 40% IHT payable out of it when the parent dies. Apart from leaving an estate to a surviving spouse (which is the most common clause in a will), where there is more than one child, the conversation with a client is sometimes interesting. Someone with 3 children for example may wish to benefit one less than the others on the premise that ‘they don’t need the money’. A good starting point in such an instance, is that all children should be treated equally, unless there is a compelling reason not to. A more difficult area is that a parent may think (or even know) that one child is wealthier than the other. The wealthier child though may not view things in the same light when they receive less from the will than their siblings. It’s always an idea to point out to a client that you may want to avoid is creating conflict between your children when you are gone, as one appears to have been favoured over the other. Someone who has supported charitable causes through their life, or feels connected to a particular cause, may wish to incorporate a charity into their Will. Charities are often included as backstop beneficiaries, that is they will only benefit if the first (or even second) named beneficiaries fail to survive the client. In such cases, the Charity ever actually receiving anything is a rarity. It might be more morally satisfying to have your Will stipulate that rather than potentially giving a Charity 100% of something they are very unlikely to receive, you give them a straight cash gift in the first place, of a more nominal fixed amount. Additionally for someone with IHT issues, their IHT liability can be reduced by a gift to Charity through a government scheme. If you would like to discuss making or updating your Will, call us on 01787 275275 for a free initial consultation. Holmes & Hills Solicitors, 96 North Street, Sudbury CO10 1RF

Long Melford Good Neighbours Can you help us to help others? Long Melford Good Neighbours has been operating in the village for over 8 year. It is run entirely by volunteers, who drive those village residents who do not have access to transport to medically related appointments locally and further afield. We also take people shopping and help with one-off tasks in the home and garden. In 2014 identifying the need, we began a social programme and currently we transport people to three coffee mornings each month. We have a dedicated team of volunteers but are always looking for more. The advantage of being a volunteer driver for Good Neighbours is that there is only a commitment of possible availability on week days. Over eighty children from the area took to the stage at Ormiston Sudbury Academy to showcase their talent in song, dance and acting. Attending Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts (MLSPA) at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston, the students worked incrediby hard learning many routines which were performed across two shows to family and friends at a brand new venue for MLSPA. After the show, one parent commented "my girls all really enjoyed their chance to shine, it was wonderful to see them on that big stage; so brave, confident and enjoying themselves".

Principal Miss Lesley said "I raised the bar very high this time and we hit it! With professional sound, lighting and even confetti bombs, the children were never phased and produced outstanding performances from 'Snoopy The Musical', ''Seussiscal ' and Little Shop of Horrors' to name a few. Members from my adult class also took to the stage - so the show had performers from just 3 yrs old to 57 yrs old and they were all outstanding. The children have gained so much confidence and talent and become 'triple threat' performers in singing, dancing and acting. It was hard work but worth every minute. I've never felt so proud". At the Centre Stage show, an "All Round Achievment Award" was presented to Rebecca Fox (pictured with Miss Lesley). This was given in recognition of the past year for her attendance, behaviour, improvement, dedication, hard work, ability and grooming. She is always happy, always tries very hard, never says "I can't do that", and is kind and throughtful to others, so a big congratulations to Rebecca! This is new award that has been implemented and will be presented at shows for BOTH schools in future! MLSPA have some exciting things happening; there is in the introduction of basic tap starter classes for children 12+ years at the Bildeston school, as well as the introduction of LAMDA lessons at BOTH schools and are pleased to welcome Susan Lockwood (pictured) who has trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has a wealth of experience in teaching drama and voicework and is also currently training to become a LAMDA examiner. If anyone in the local area is interested in taking LAMDA lessons on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis, please do not hesitate to contact MLSPA to find out more. The students now look forward to an exciting workshop planned in July and a MLSPA family outing to see the "Rock and Roll" panto at the New Wolsey Theatre and of course THEIR PERFORMANCE in their next show! Fight cellulite with Go Figure at Weavers’ House Spa, Lavenham Throughout May Weavers’ House Spa, at the Swan at Lavenham is offering a free ‘Giving it the Brush Off’ luxury body brush worth ÂŁ16 with purchases of Go Figure anticellulite gel to help you get bikini ready. If you have ever looked at your behind in the mirror and seen those darned cellulite dimples smiling right back at you, then this must be on your to buy list. Cellulite is a modern day issue; a reminder of all those nights out, binging on junk food and generally not treating your body like a temple. Artificial flavourings, preservatives and sugars along with alcohol, cigarettes and carbonated drinks have no purpose, therefore the body doesn’t know how to process them - they are toxic. Cellulite is the effect of toxins on the body. You don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite and there is no easy way to remove the toxins that have built up. Toxins surround the fat cells in your skin; the more you intake, the more water your body will retain to dilute the toxins pushing the fat cells to the surface giving you that lumpy bumpy effect. Working from the inside out will help to flush out your system, eliminate artificial flavours, preservatives and sugars from your diet; eat healthily and drink water, your body should be 70% water. You can also help smooth out those lady lumps with a Go Figure, firming, toning and tightening body detox treatment at Weavers’ House Spa (60 minutes at ÂŁ70). The treatment starts with body brushing to invigorate and stimulate the blood and lymph circulation, which helps breakdown cellulite. Hips, thighs and abs are then given a detoxifying massage followed by an intensive mud wrap. A friction rub completes the treatment with Go Figure anti-cellulite gel. Call 01787 246 246, email weavers@theswanatlavenham.co.uk or visit www.theswanatlavenham.co.uk/spa to schedule your Go Figure treatment.

Who do you think you are? By ex-punk Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church

I confess I have a penchant for programmes like Who Do You Think You Are? You know the one - celebrities get to trace their ancestry and discover secrets and surprises from their past. Although I am never sure if the shock on their faces is for real or for the cameras, it’s makes for great TV nevertheless. Recently a DNA test revealed that the Archbishop of Canterbury’s father was not who he thought he was. Justin Welby discovered his real dad was, in fact, Winston Churchill’s Private Secretary, Anthony Montague Brown. He has shown nothing but grace, courage and humility, and been notably void of any self-pity. He remarked, “I know that I find who I am in Jesus Christ, not in genetics, and my identity in him never changes.” I am sure behind this statement there will be twinges of sadness. After all, who wouldn’t be knocked off balance by such a revelation? And it certainly can’t be easy having your parents’ one-night stand being picked over by journalists. So what do we do when our identity looks set by things beyond our control? But the question of identity is also heating up in the area of gender identification with established and respected writers such as Ian McEwan and Germaine Greer entering the fray with their comments on transgender people. Some academics are saying that this all indicates the rise of a new ideology called ‘self-identification’. And if you need, perhaps, further proof of this, a UK Government website is now offering young people the choice of 23 different genders to help in their self-identification. You might be wondering where it is all going. But we need to remember, we’re talking about real people with real emotions. I have met those who are confused, frightened and lonely with their identity. Some even suicidal. And as a church pastor, I readily admit before you that I struggle sometimes to know how to best help those whose own ‘selfidentification’ I do not understand. But I am trying. The Bible, which hundreds of millions believe to be inspired by the Spirit of God, says we are all created in God’s image. And when we choose to put our faith in Jesus - believing in his life, death and resurrection - our lives become filled with a new sense of identity, an identity that surpasses all other identities, whether historic, gender-based or cultural. Moreover, we come home to a place where we don’t have to take on the pressures of having to make up our own individual values or rely on the contingent approval of others for our selfworth. Identity in Christ is the gift that releases in us purpose and destiny. And an identity which is offered with a personal relationship with God himself. Whatever the identity crisis, we get to restart our life by being reborn in Christ. As Jesus said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Stour Valley Vineyard is a growing family church with Sunday Services 10.30am every weekend at the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury (includes children and young people’s programme). Freshly brewed coffee is served on arrival. It gets busy, so please allow time for parking. www.stourvalleyvineyard.org/i’m-new

Reg charity no 1124029 Kenneth is busy promoting dog chipping leaving me to tell you about two feline families that arrived at SESAW recently. A kind gentleman rescued Chilli, who had been living rough on an industrial estate, just before she gave birth to a litter of kittens. Sadly another pregnant puss lost some of her litter due to a viral infection, the others are now fighting for their lives. We are also expecting babies in the garden since the blue tits laid eggs in Ron's new bird box. Fear not dear reader, my interest in our feather residents extends only to bird watching from the comfort of a sunny windowsill. One of our SESAW friends, local wildlife guru George Millens, was on hand to offer advice at our Spring Sale in the Old School, Long Melford last month. Over £3200 was raised thanks to more than 200 visitors and our wonderful volunteers who helped make the event such a success. Another enjoyable day for all participants, we hope you will all return for the Christmas Fair on 20th November! If you enjoy testing your general knowledge, our Village Quiz Evening is for you. Sudbury Mayor’s Report

O

One of the things I have enjoyed most during my term of office has been arranging the various fund raising activities, whether it be coffee mornings, curry nights or craft fairs, the most recent being on Saturday 19th March when more than 50 people popped in for a chat, some were Family and friends but some were complete strangers who may have visited the Town for the First time, but everyone had an opinion which they wanted to share. That was followed by a charity walk for ‘Sports Relief’ which was held at the Delphi Sports ground and sponsored by Sainsbury’s, the minimum was a mile with some continuing onto to 3 miles and a few doing 6 miles whilst raising money for deserving charities. We were invited to a concert in St Peters by the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra where we were awe struck by the piano ability of Jill Morton who kept her audience spellbound with her performance of Beethoven’s ‘The Emperor’. We were invited to attend the Sudbury Rotary club’s Charter Night Dinner in the Masonic Hall, which was attended by distinguished guests including Lord Andrew Philips who gave his audience an insight into his time at the House of Lords, his account confirmed my belief that at the very least we need a change in the way the second house is selected. For the last few months I have been invited to join the Trustees for the Friar street Fire victims, who’s job it is to ensure fairness in the distributing of the Funds that were collected for those affected, having experienced the way that they came to their decisions, I am satisfied the fund is in safe hands. The Annual Town Meeting which is held around the third Wednesday in March every year, was attended by around 40 people this year, many of whom asked searching questions of the Town, District and County Councillors that were present, the meeting gives members of the Public an opportunity to question some of the decisions taken and to move motions which the Town Council are duty bound to discuss, unfortunately there were no motions this year. Good Friday was a busy day which started with the Fun Run with hundreds running and walking to raise money for their favourite charities, the race was held in warm sunny weather which whilst enjoyed by the spectators, did not make completing the 6 mile course an easy task for the competitors, judging by some of the expressions on the faces of some of them is was not an easy

task, I’m just glad I had the job of starting the race and did not have to compete. This was then followed by starting the Regatta season for the Sudbury rowing club and having the job of hoisting the flag, it was a pleasure to see so many young members which should ensure the clubs future. Then off to Catchpole Court Residential Home to meet the Staff and residents and to enjoy one of the many fund raising raffles that the home runs to help provide the services necessary for a quality home. I accompanied Town Warden Bradley Smith on an early morning dog fouling patrol of the Town Centre, it’s amazing how different it looks at 6am when there are few people around. I took part in appointing another three ‘Freeman of Sudbury’ on March 31st, this ceremony dates back many centuries at a time when only ‘Freeman’ were allowed the vote, these days it is only ceremonial although they are allowed to have 2 cows graze on the meadows, two of the latest members were young ladies, which was only possible from 1992, with the third being an Honorary position. A Craft Fair was held in aid of my charities in St Peters on Market Hill with around 40 stalls selling a range of hand made crafts, a cup of tea and a piece of cake for £1.50 making it the cheapest in Town, needless to say that there were no cakes or scones left at the end of the day, thank you to Alison for organising it and the stall holders for taking part, not forgetting the visitors for popping in and spending a bob or two. One of the privileges of serving as Mayor is that you meet so many nice people, the many people who are running organisations and raising money to help those who need our help and support and give up much of their time to support vulnerable people, these are the people who deserve recognition from the authorities, not the sportsmen and women, the actors, the TV personalities who in many cases are My Coffee Morning when £125 was well paid for doing something they raised for the Mayors charities enjoy, those hundreds of volunteers who go about their business in a quiet and unassuming way, not seeking reward or recognition but just providing the help and support necessary to those less able to support themselves. I attended two civic functions on the 10th of April, the first being a Sunday lunch with the Needham Market Mayor and in the company of a few other Mayors, the second when we attended a Thanks giving Service with the Mayor of Woodbridge and several other dignitaries which was followed by a nice curry. You get to know the Mayors around Suffolk very well as they are a very supportive lot, many have become very good friends, none are political although members of National Parties and all care very much for their Communities. We were invited to Banhams Drive to collect a bucket, which the residents collect every year for the Mayors charities, it was a lovely occasion spent in the company of some lovely people who have certainly captured the spirit of being neighbourly, they frequently hold a variety of events and meet frequently holding afternoon tea parties together and offer help and support to each other, before you all rush to try to get in on the act, you need to be over 55 to get into Banhams Drive. That concludes my report for this month, the penultimate one before handing over to my successor. Jack Owen Mayor of Sudbury

Get Back to Hockey! Taking place from 9th May to 19th June England Hockey’s 2016 national campaign promises to be bigger and better than ever as we aim to attract thousands of players back to hockey. Back to Hockey sessions are coached sessions for men and women who may not have played hockey for a long period of time or who are looking to try the sport for the first time. The coached sessions will provide a great opportunity to learn/refresh skills and play with like- minded people in a friendly and relaxed environment without the pressure to perform. Last year over 243 clubs delivered sessions and 4,440 players took part. Based on feedback from players, towards the end of this campaign, we are also encouraging local clubs to come together and play small sided games against each other. Sudbury Pharmacies gain Healthy Living status Two Sudbury pharmacies have achieved Healthy Living Pharmacy status, offering enhanced face to face support to keep people healthy. Boots Pharmacy based at Market Hill and Tesco Instore Pharmacy at the Springlands Road branch are celebrating the coveted accolade which is endorsed by Public Health England and demonstrates a pharmacy’s commitment to providing proactive support for a range of healthy lifestyle services. Suffolk’s public health team funds the training and development for pharmacy teams to reach level 1 to become a Healthy Living Pharmacy, and these two Sudbury pharmacies are among the first in Suffolk to receive their certificate after demonstrating the required standards. Initial evaluation of Healthy Living Pharmacies (HLP) shows an increase in successful smoking quits, delivery of alcohol interventions and advice, support with emergency contraception, targeted seasonal flu vaccinations, advice on common ailments, and other healthy lifestyle advice such as nutrition, physical activity and healthy weight. Successful pharmacies will proudly display the Healthy Living Pharmacy kite mark and actively support local health campaigns. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Consultation Feedback Published Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has published all of the feedback received as part of its Integrated Risk Management Plan consultation. Full details of the consultation results can be found at www.suffolk.gov.uk/fireredesign This document, produced by Opinion Research Services, contains the feedback from everyone who completed an online questionnaire and/or submitted their view through another relevant format. The open consultation questionnaire (with an accompanying Consultation Document) was available online and as a hard copy between 16 November 2015 and 22 February 2016. 1,654 questionnaires were completed: 1,603 were submitted online and 51 by post. A further 4,090 ‘unofficial’ questionnaires were also received that only asked the questions relating to changing the second fire engine at Sudbury to a Rapid Response-type vehicle. 6,184 people signed a petition (organised by the Bury St Edmunds on-call firefighters) entitled ‘Petition against Cuts to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service’; and 5,255 people signed a petition opposing the IRMP proposals and calling for the full SCC to vote on them, as opposed to Cabinet only. This was organised by the Ipswich Labour Party in conjunction with the Fire Brigades Union. The consultation period ran for 14 weeks until 22 February 2016, during which time Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and Suffolk County Council undertook a range of activities. Mark Hardingham, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer said: “Officers are now reviewing the independent consultation report and the feedback we have received. The report demonstrates the lengths we have gone to in providing people with the opportunity to have their say on the future shape of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. The feedback we now have will help to shape future recommendations. The report has been published on our website for everyone to view alongside the other key documents concerning the IRMP.”

Peter Thorogood... Funding Criminality At last we have a Leader who is prepared to offer an example to be emulated by the electorate. So Dodgy Dave gets castigated by the hypocritical opposition and the media for legally avoiding tax. It is morally the right, nay duty, of us all to avoid filling the government’s coffers in every way. After all, is gives them less to flippantly deal out to the BBC, NHS, public employees and dubious charities and the Swiss bank accounts of foreign despots. Despite promises of open government the number of severance payments protected by confidentiality agreements is also despicable. There can only be two reasons to justify this practice. Either to cover up corruption or at best incompetence at every level. Fortunately the Freedom of Information Act gives we poor saps some recourse to the truth. I intend to ask (as is my right) of both Babergh and Sudbury Town Council how many such agreements have been signed off over the last five years. I will then pass that scrap of knowledge on to the reader. Is there no Councillor, at whatever level, who is also concerned at this abuse of governance and prepared to question and spill the beans? No, they will follow the established custom of Eatanswill and stand united in their silence. Whilst on the subject of confidentiality can any Sudbury Councillor publicly defend the reasoning of purchasing the still derelict land behind our town hall when we had not the funds, causing loans to be raised (still being repaid) at a cost to the community in excess of £800,000? And recently the meetings and discussions with developers regarding the future of Bel Vue and our bus park do nothing to allay our fears. Babergh planner’s decision to build some 150 homes in the Constable landscape of the Dedham vale is local authority vandalism at its worst, yes, the same people who approved the NHS rape of Peoples Park and the aircraft hanger Prolog blot on the landscape. Anyway enough of that dubious lot, we did elect them. As one who is no stranger to discrimination, I am after all a Catholic, Freemason and of mixed race. I still love a bit of humorous bigotry. My drinking chums who inhabit God’s waiting room (aka the Sudbury Institute Club) feeling secure among their own are a constant source of amusement. You really must join; it’s a complete antidote to the sanitised managed pubs that have replaced the likes of the great Ship, Anchor and Christopher. Nothing seems sacred, thank God. Immigration is always a fair topic including a floating minefield on the Stour and barricades on our northern borders to keep foreigners from Norfolk in their place. Even the mention of Cornard raises concerns. Except for the occasional visit from Councillors Sayers and Owen (both good guys) mercifully free of politicians, even at election time. Maybe they think us a lost cause anyway. The sad closure of our Conservative Club gives proof to my theory that councillors of that ilk do not care to mix with the likes of us! An Englishman’s bar is his debating chamber and long may it be the bastion of free speech, however outrageous, and is also conducive to sharing a jar with like minded opinionated bigots like me. Whilst on the subject of banter I am disgusted by the £20K fine imposed on England prop Marler for telling his opposite number ‘exactly what he thought of him’, how precious is our great game today? The fact that Marler had been called a “Posh English xxxx” apparently is not racist but acceptable. Any self respecting prop forward would certainly find the term “Posh” exceptionally offensive! Another observation of concern. Now that both our local police station and courthouse have closed, with no patrolling policeman in sight, where have the cost savings been directed? Two hospitals replaced by a clinic, the missed named Health Trust developing what used to be OUR land, whence go the profits? Certainly not in improving public services or financing our desperately needed by-pass. We must be the poorest governed province in the East. I will now seek solace in a jar of Dublin’s finest and ponder on the failings of those we elect! Peter Thorogood - mandpthorogood@gmail.com All observations, rants and threats still welcomed

Stoke-by-Nayland Club Captain’s Charity 2015 Julian Lamb, 2015 Captain of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, as well as his Lady Captain Eileen Hands, and Jo Little of sponsor Handelsbanken visited the St Helena Hospice with a cheque for £9868.86 last week. It was the money raised during his Captains Year, Julian was keen to thank all the club’s members, sponsors and dedicated staff who helped him raise such staggering amount of money! Pictured from left: Sarah Green - Director of Income Generation, Chloe Winter - Corporate Fund Raising Manager, Julian Lamb 2015 Club Captain Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club, Eileen Hands - 2015 Lady Captain Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club, Jo Little of sponsor Handelsbanken.

WHAGS provide a Fines Fence A group of golfers have come to the rescue of a day club for old people by making their garden secure. The Wednesday Hackers and Golfers Society (WHAGS) perform at Newton Green Golf Club, and founder captain George Bullett extracts fines from members for various misdemeanours. In the last year he raised £400 and it has gone to renew a fence round the garden of the Chilton Day Club run by Age UK at Sudbury. The picture shows the golfers in front of the fence with day club manager Jilly Vince and George Bullett (immediately above)

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Section The first Tuesday evening after the clocks change for the summer is traditionally the evening 9 hole Ladies’ Captain vs Ladies’ Secretary match. This year was no exception. Two teams were drawn and took on a very windy Gainsborough course to play either on the front or the back 9. More than 30 ladies took part and to their satisfaction enjoyed a dry round. Afterwards all enjoyed supper in the Garden Room followed by the presentation of the new shield Lady Captain, Betty Cox, receiving the new shield from Peter Barfield, with made by Peter Barfield. Peter Annie Major, Secretary of the Ladies had made the old shield 40 Section. years previously which was now full. To everyone’s amusement, he advised those present his skill may not be as good in 40 years time when the next one will be needed. The result of the competition was a well received ‘half’ which will now be shown on the shield for 2016. Thursday, 31st March saw Stoke’s Mail on Sunday team playing Playgolf, Colchester, on their home course at Lexden. The mid-day start gave good weather until later in the afternoon when a few light hailstorms caused a drop in temperature. Sadly, the Stoke ladies lost the round on this occasion.
