The Sudbury Town Team have been working hard over the last 3 years on improving the promotion of Sudbury, it’s businesses and all Sudbury has to offer. The Town Team was set up to apply to become a Portas Town and to help maintain and enhance the town centre. It is a non-political, non-profit making group representing the interests of local businesses, many of which took part in a survey in 2014 to establish their priorities, the results of which formed the basis of much of the work done by the Town Team with the support of one part time, self-employed member. The overwhelming majority of businesses who responded to the survey considered the most important factor to their success in the future was maintaining free car parking in Sudbury (at least for the 3 hours currently available). Although we understand that the possibility of charging for car parking is only under review, the Town Team is ensuring that the views of both the businesses and the public Members of the Town Team at the launch of the website are known by all Babergh District Councillors and a petition will soon be available in shops as well as on the Town Team website. The introduction of the new website and the associated social media has been widely praised as it not only provides details of where to shop and eat in Sudbury but also has details of where to stay, visit, latest news, what’s on and offers. ...Continued on page 3

Working Hard for Sudbury Sam Bawden, the Chair of the Town Team and Partner at Holmes & Hills Solicitors said “Sudbury has such a great community spirit and many businesses are keen to get involved in the town. It is therefore important to have a website which promotes all that Sudbury has to offer. As with many businesses in Sudbury, we support not only events such as the Taste of Sudbury but also get involved where possible with window displays for the celebration of the Town Twinnings 30 years twinning with Clermont and the Christmas Window Display which are all organised by the Sudbury Town Team and this all helps build a healthy community.” The Town Team sees keeping shops and the businesses in town up to date, not only with their projects but with information on grants and support which is available to them, and being a line of communication, as an important aspect of what they do. Apart from the bigger projects like the Taste of Sudbury Food & Drink Festival and the new website and mobile app to promote Sudbury, the Town Team provides monthly “What’s On” articles which are published by the local press, newsletters and magazines and is available on several websites and promotes not only events but also The Quay, Gainsborough’s House, markets, restaurants, walks etc. The Shop Local Campaign has been promoted widely over the last couple of years in December and details why everyone should try to shop locally whenever possible. In 2015 it included the Christmas Window Display and Best Mince Pie Competition. The Town Team also organise distribution of local leaflets for many organisations including their new events leaflet to Tourist Information Centres throughout East Anglia, London and visitor destinations in the area. They support Art About Town, where local artists can display their art in local businesses and Sudbury businesses were pleased to be able to display more art than any other town in Suffolk in 2015. They also work with many groups on promotion and last year with Gainsborough’s House on a survey of shoppers in Sudbury. More details of the Sudbury Town Team and their activities can be found at http://seeanddosudbury.co.uk

Sudbury Community Kitchen Thanks to recent publicity in the local press, Sudbury Community Kitchen has been offered premises by St Gregory’s Church, who have provided use of their Church Hall and kitchen in Prince Street, Sudbury. This means that the serving of hot, nourishing, home-made soup with a roll or toast can begin on Monday 7 March 2016, from 12 noon. The lunches will be offered free of charge and anyone in need will be a welcome guest. This project is a new initiative under the ‘umbrella’ of the Sudbury Market Town Partnership. SMTP Chairman, Lesley Ford-Platt said “The Partnership and the Community Kitchen group is extremely grateful to St Gregory’s Church for their generosity and willingness to support this much-needed service in Sudbury”. Sainsbury’s have agreed to provide vegetables and bread and a grant for equipment was given by County Councillor John Sayers. Suffolk Road Church has donated crockery, and Health Foods for You in Sudbury has given mugs and plan to continue to support the scheme. The most recent donation has come from the East of England Co-op, who will be providing free tea bags for the next six months. It is hoped to also offer the service on a second day each week in due course. Future plans include teaching those who wish how to cook low-cost and nutritious meals, but more funding will be needed before this can be progressed. Guests will be most welcome to come along and share a simple meal prepared by Community Kitchen volunteers. For more information please contact Teresa Bishop on 01787 311558 or bishopteresa78@gmail.com.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 You'll never guess where I've been! Our lovely volunteer, Elaine, took me along to meet Kelvin at Keith Avis Printers in Hadleigh when she ordered a pop up banner for SESAW. Kelvin was very helpful and just found time to pose for photos before putting the Community News magazine ‘to bed’. Ollie (the Black) cat says I'm getting too big for my boots since starting to "travel" more, as per my New Year resolution! Meanwhile, at home Mum discovered a poor old black cat in a cardboard box on our drive. Sadly he died but a young ginger tom found in a field is doing well. An irresponsible human dumped four cockerels in our paddock, regardless of how they would survive the attentions of the local fox. Yet another heartless person lobbed a ten week old, worm infested kitten over a high garden wall and left it for dead. “Lobby” is now receiving lots of love and attention from one of our foster families and their dog. Maisie the Springer is progressing well after complicated leg surgery. Donations to help fund her treatment can be made at Swayne and Partners in Long Melford, at the Sanctuary or via our JustGiving page entitled Amazing Maisie. Everyone at SESAW is delighted that Mum (known to you as Maggie) will receive a Babergh and Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Award next month. The dear lady says she is only "the tip of the iceberg" because all the volunteers make everything possible. Well she's always been our hero, now it's official! The fundraisers are holding a Spring Sale on 10th April, 10-3pm, at the Old School Long Melford. Tables may still be available, call 01206 263269 to check. Thank you to all the kind people who donated cat litter for our feline inmates recently. Of course some of us have humans armed with poo bags to clear up after us. Maybe cats are not as smart as dogs like me, Kenny the Boss, Chihuahua. Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare, Reg.Charity No:1124029, Open 10-1pm Thurs-Sun, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP. Want to live longer? Take up Golf! Many describe golf as ‘a good walk ruined’, but in actual fact, golf is said to have greater health benefits than walking and as well as other more strenuous forms of exercise. Research* led by Professor Anders Ahlbom in Sweden shows that playing the game of golf can add an average of five years to your life. A study conducted on 500,000 golfers led Professor Ahlbom to conclude that many aspects of the game were beneficial to health. He says, ‘in a game of golf, you can walk for 4-5 hours walking at a pace of 6 to 7 kph which is good for the health’. As well as direct physiological benefits, golf positively impacts people on a social and psychological level. The interaction with other players on and off the course and social events held by golf clubs can contribute to a longer lifespan. In fact, the research found that the lowest death rates were found among golfers with the lowest handicaps. They are 47% less likely to die at any time than non-golfers of the same age. ‘Maintaining a low handicap involves playing a lot, so this supports the idea that it is the game itself that is good for the health,’ Prof Ahlbom goes on to say that other factors outside the golf course, such as the fact that people who enjoy sport also generally lead a healthier lifestyle, could play a part in the findings, published; however, he said that it was ‘likely’ that playing the game itself had a significant impact on health. *Research information obtained from Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports. To try your hand at the glorious game of golf why not drop by our Golf Open Weekend at Stoke by Nayland Golf & Leisure and enquire about our newest Golf Guest Experience package? With this package you can play as much golf as you can for 1 whole month for just £99pp. An absolute steal if you are looking to see if this is the sport for you. Call Mary on 01206 265841 or email mary.saward@stokegolfandleisure.com for more information about the Golf Guest Experience package or our Golf Open Weekend (Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th March).

The Long Melford Swan has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award The Suffolk pub and restaurant is one of just six pubs across the country to compete for the title of Independent Casual Dining Pub of the Year in the Casual Dining Restaurant & Pub Awards. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 24 February. The Long Melford Swan is owned by Andrew Macmillan, daughter Lorna Pissarro and son’s Oliver and Iain Macmillan. Since taking over the Long Melford Swan in 2011, the family has earned a reputation for its quality menu, most recently earning two AA Rosette Awards for culinary excellence. Lorna commented: “We have worked hard to improve the restaurant over the past five years, including a huge extension to our kitchen and major refurbishment to the building. As a result we can deliver a top menu and a high level of service we are very proud of. It is great to have that recognised. “We are up against some really tough competition for this award, but we are excited to have just reached the final and will have all our fingers crossed for the big night.” Clive Chesser, managing director for Greene King Pub Partners, said: “The Macmillan family have achieved a great deal in such a short space of time, and it is fantastic to see them receive national recognition for what is now one of Suffolk’s finest pubs. It is thoroughly deserved and we are all backing them for a win in the final.” This is the first year of the Casual Dining Restaurant & Pub Awards, which aim to recognise the very best UK pubs and restaurants to enjoy an informal meal in. The family also run the Hadleigh Ram and the Lavenham Greyhound. More information about the Long Melford Swan, including the menu, can be found at www.longmelfordswan.co.uk.

Backing better mobile coverage in South Suffolk

The Red House R E S I D E N T I A L

H O M E

Come and see some of our newly refurbished rooms and talk to our highly experienced staff about long and short term care for your loved ones. Having knocked on so many of South Suffolk’s front doors during the election, one of the issues that was consistently raised was poor mobile phone signal. Yes, better broadband is a big part of improving local connectivity, and I remain committed to that. However, there is one distinct reason to focus in particular on mobile coverage: for some it can be a matter of life or death. I recently launched a constituency-wide petition for better mobile coverage in South Suffolk. One of the first to sign was a lady who explained to me how she had been unable to call an ambulance when her husband had a fall, due to the lack of any signal. If you have a little bit of coverage, you can usually dial 999; in a ‘not spot’ where you are away from your landline, you cannot call anybody. I have had pleas from first responders in a number of parishes to push for better signal, given the implications for emergency calls. I have even had grave diggers complaining to me of their fears of being busy in the churchyard only to find themselves unable to ring for help if they are injured. What can my petition achieve? It is part of a campaign I am running in conjunction with other MPs to pressure the Government to announce a new round of funding for the Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP). The last round had mixed results with much of the money returned to the Treasury because of local problems with specific sites. I would emphasise that even if we are successful in obtaining new funding, it goes without saying that new masts would have to be appropriately sited. The standard planning process would apply. Signing this petition is to support the principle of better signal, subject to planning. To sign the petition, visit jamescartlidge.com or contact your Parish, Town or District Councillors who have copies. The deadline for submissions is 4th March as I will present the petition to Government early in March in advance of the Budget. I am grateful if you are able to support me.

New service in Sudbury offers gentle earwax removal Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed. With more and more GP Surgeries now not offering wax removal services or having long delays to get an appointment, one local hearing care company spotted an opportunity to help people in Sudbury. The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Sudbury Community Health Centre, is now offering microsuction, a safe, gentle and non-invasive technique to remove earwax. It is performed with the aid of an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids. Microsuction clinics will be offered in Sudbury every 6 weeks with the next session due to take place on Thursday 24th March. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre said “We are delighted to have added this new service to our portfolio. We offer a relaxed atmosphere, allowing sufficient time with all our patients to remove wax, in a safe and comfortable way.” “Whilst earwax has a number of positive functions, it can sometimes block the ear canal and lead to pain or temporary hearing loss.” The company also offers an ear syringing service at both of its centres in Sudbury and Hadleigh, on a fortnightly and weekly basis respectively. They can’t guarantee the weather at their forthcoming Spring fair, “Fete du Printemps”, which opens Saturday 2nd (10am – 5pm) and runs daily throughout the week until Sunday 10th April, but there will certainly be ‘Spring in the air’ at this delightful event and an evident ‘spring in the step’ of both Peter and Cathy Bullen, proprietors of Bildeston’s French boutique-store The Boule-in. “We were away in France sourcing new stock when we heard the thrilling news that we had been voted 11th in ‘Homes & Antiques’ magazine Top 50 UK Antique and Collectable shops/Fairs by a panel of very renowned designers and antique experts!” says Cathy. “At first we couldn’t believe it as we are still a very small new enterprise in the huge world of Interiors and Antiques. However they seem to have caught onto the fact that we have tried to produce a welcoming and uniquely charming atmosphere for our customers to enjoy”. She is absolutely right and it’s certainly one reason why many of their loyal and rapidly expanding group of customers continue to flock to their fairs. However, she modestly doesn’t mention the fact that the voting panel describes The Boule-in as being “affordable and right on trend”! The magazine’s February article has produced such a rush to their Kennington, London store that Peter and Cathy have had to return to France for another impromptu buying trip. “For the Suffolk Fairs we have to source beautiful stock for the barn AND the garden” they point out. With uniquely original, affordable “right on trend” pieces to style your home and garden this Spring, it seems that the Fete du Printemps is a must in your April calendar – after all, if its good enough for the likes of Mark Hill, Nicky Haslam and Sophie Conran it must be good enough for the likes of us! Sudbury Summer Open Gardens Our Annual Summertime Open Gardens will be held on Sunday 3rd July this year. As in previous years all funds raised at this Event will be for St. Nicholas Hospice in Bury St. Edmunds. The Hospice provides the most wonderful care to not only the patients but their families as well and to continue with this fantastic care funding is desperately needed. The money raised from the Open Gardens is only small but every bit of fund raising helps and we are therefore appealing to all gardeners to support us by opening their gardens for this worthy cause. Many gardeners think that their gardens are not worthy of being entered and so we would like to remind everyone that this is not a competition and all that is needed is a willing entrant with a pretty garden. Entrance tickets will be £5.00 per person with children under ten being free. Tickets and the accompanying map of Gardens on Show will be on sale the week before the Event at the Sudbury Tourist Bureau and also at St. Nicholas Hospice Charity Shop in Gainsborough Street, Sudbury. Sales of these tickets at the Tourist Bureau and Charity Shop will cease at 1 p.m. on Saturday 2nd July and thereafter will be available at the participating Open Gardens on the Sunday. The gardens will be open from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m on the 3rd July. Would all interested persons please phone Belinda on 07756 381537 or email her at belindajaneuk@gmail.com

Important legal update for Sudbury landlords Landlords in Sudbury are to be provided with a free update on important changes to the law impacting them, their legal responsibilities and their properties. Local law firm, Holmes & Hills Solicitors, is holding a free event for landlords on the evening of Thursday 17th March at The Granary in Sudbury. Landlords attending the event will hear from Holmes & Hills’ own Landlord & Tenant Law specialist, David Dixey, as well as a special guest speaker from the National Landlords Association (NLA). Between them the speakers will cover all the major changes to the law to have been introduced in recent months as well an outlook for the rental market provided by the NLA. This includes covering review of the newly changed eviction procedures and new ‘Right to Rent’ rules and penalties, among others. David Dixey, Landlord & Tenant Law specialist at Holmes & Hills in Sudbury said: “There has been a raft of changes affecting residential landlords in recent months. It is important landlords keep up to date with these changes otherwise they may be putting themselves at risk. We understand it can be difficult to keep abreast of all the latest developments so we have decided to organise our free events for local landlords in a bid to help ensure they continue to protect their interests.” In addition to hearing from, and being able to ask questions of, a specialist lawyer and NLA industry expert, attendees will also be able to meet and discuss issues with other local landlords with investments in the area. To book your free place/s you do not have to be a member of the NLA or a client of Holmes & Hills, the event is open to all residential landlords or those considering investing in buy-to-let property. This is the second year Holmes & Hills Solicitors has organised free legal updates for local landlords. In addition to the event taking place in Sudbury, there will be another event held in Braintree on 16th March. Peter Thorogood... Tolerance Abused Surely the one greatest trait that we English have traditionally held dear is that of tolerance. We accept the racial taunts of our Celtic neighbours, the abuse of our native Christian religion and the corrupt policies of our own and European politicians with resignation, knowing that we old Suffolk folk should be above such things. But what I find of greater concern is the abuse of those values, not only by incomers, but also by our native born academics that seem to despise all that is good in our society. Hypocrisy abounds. An African law student, himself funded by the great Cecil Rhodes legacy, demands the removal of his statue from the very university he also funded. So Ntokozo Qwaba seeks to overthrow what has been acceptable to us all for years when as a visitor to our Britannic isle he should remember his manners. Now this lad could be called misguided because of his youth and ignorance of our ways, but what excuse can those 200,000 supporters of his misguided views have when they were born and nurtured here? Believe it or not they now seek to airbrush our history by removing a statue of Queen Victoria as Empress of India from London. We now have a petition, probably from those of a like minded politically correct bent, who wish to bar the American buffoon Donald Trump from our shores. Why, for Gods sake, every time he opens his mouth he proves ridiculous and only the foolish could take him seriously. Surely, as a matter of taste, he would benefit from a visit here, a quick trip down Sudbury’s North Street and he could return to the colonies having benefitted from a decent hair cut. I cannot recall the same outcry when representatives of dictatorial regimes have visited us, with blood stained hands, in the past foreign hate preachers have claimed our streets. It seems that the utterances of an american are of greater offence than breaking bread and setting up trade deals with a corrupt and abusive regime e.g. Saudi Arabia. Maybe our wishy washy liberal academics would like to appease our critics by erecting statues of those African dictators who make the excesses of colonialism pale into insignificance. So the great and good that make up the Sudbury Steering Group have been coerced into voting to remove our bus station to the totally unsuitable Girling Street. This decision is based on the findings of Babergh councillors and officers of which no others are allowed to peruse due, and I quote, “to commercial confidentiality”. Therefore how could this decision be democratically arrived at? Surely a fresh look must be made regarding a Sudbury transport hub. Despite the objections of the bus users, bus companies and those that braved the misnamed consultation meetings it seems a done deal. The train and bus stations are far apart as it is. Has not one councillor thought of the grandmother or whatever, travelling from foreign climes to visit grandchildren in say Glemsford. Departing British rail she will be forced to traverse an even greater distance to Girling Street, suitably burdened with luggage, across a myriad of busy roads, dodging the vehicles that our overburdened street grid is burdened with? One can only presume that a bus using councillor is as rare a beast as a patrolling police officer. What crass, selfish and un-thoughtful decision making! Is not one Babergh councillor prepared to break ranks and condemn this abuse of the democratic process? Methinks a bus pass luncheon to a village hostelry beckons with like minded cronies of a certain age, councillors welcome! Usual moans, threats and condolences to mandpthorogood@gmail.com

Sudbury Mayor’s Report By the time you read this article, the opportunity to have your say on the proposed fire service cuts in Sudbury will have expired, but with over 3,500 local people completing the consultation documents and most objecting to the proposed fire cuts, I cannot see how their views can be ignored, we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe I’m being cynical, but I have to say that I feel we are probably at a time when democracy is at the lowest point than I can ever remember, it doesn’t seem to count for much in the corridors of power these days, I use the examples of Councillor Hicks, the Suffolk County Councillor for our Health & wellbeing, who pointed out in front of 200 local residents at a Public meeting recently, that the decision on the cuts to the Sudbury Fire Station lay in the hands of nine Cabinet members and that our County Councillors will have little influence on the decision, it seems to me that the remaining 66 County Councillors may as well throw the towel in. I tried to find out on the Babergh District Council web site, the result of the Community bids that were made for Belvue House, as I read in the local papers that they had all failed. But try as I might I couldn’t find out anything about it, I am luckier than most though as I am able to phone an Officer of the Council, but most can’t, so updating the web site is the only way to pass on decisions of interest to the Public. Having said all of that, it is all confidential and

commercially sensitive so even if it was in the public interest no one will tell you anything. Now that the decision to move the Bus Station from its present location to Girling Street has been made, I await the decisions on the loss of car parking spaces, how the Buses will navigate into Girling Street without causing more traffic chaos, creating a link between the Bus and Train Municipal Charities Trustees Station, how the deliveries into Iceland, the Pound shop & the Silk Worm will be handled. I’m beginning to sound a bit grumpy like my compatriot Peter Thorogood, must be an age thing, or is it because I think that when elected by the public they deserve to be listened to! Now I’ve got that off my chest I can move on to the civic side of the job which is still a bit quiet since the Christmas break, I visited the public consultation on the proposed refurbishment of St Peters Church on the Market Hill, quite an ambitious project which is designed to make it more user friendly, the added toilets will be welcomed, but not sure about the value for money of many of the other modifications that were being proposed, glad it’s not my decision. As part of my Town clean up initiatives I was pleased that the Town Council agreed to the purchase of 20 cigarette/chewing gum disposal machines that can be attached to lamp posts around the town in a bid to stop the plague of cigarette ends and chewing gum ending up on our streets. Cobblers & Keys were one of the worst businesses affected by the Friar Street fire so it was nice to be invited to their official opening on the 1st of February in a brand new shop in the Borehamgate Precinct. The Public meeting on the 3rd of February was a lively affair when many of the 200 plus audience had the opportunity to quiz the Chief Fire Officer Mark Hardingham and the County Councillor for Health & Wellbeing Mathew Hicks on the proposed cuts to the Fire Service, we will now have to await the outcome. I made a couple of trips to Gainsborough House during the month, I am pleased to be part of the promotion of the house and the painter, as the expansion of knowledge about our historical past will help us resist the excesses of the modernisers. It may seem strange to be talking about the Poppy day Appeal in February, but it does require an awful lot of volunteers to make it the success that it is, in February they hold an award ceremony to acknowledge that support, by awarding certificates to those who spent most time out in the November weather selling poppies. I will also be attending a number of the events being held by ‘The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts’ this is a group that dates back to 1922 and is holding its 95th event, it is available for all ages to enter but especially appeals to the young, a range of disciplines are held throughout February, Dance, music, Speech & Drama with a concert on March 13th at Ormiston Academy. With me from left to right are my daughter I mentioned in my last Sharon, wife Maureen, and two friends, report about several events Daphne & Eric Cason at my coffee morning that I will be holding to raise money for my charities, the Craft fare in St Peters raised nearly £500 which I am extremely grateful, especially to Alison, Diane & Sian and the thirty or so stall holders. There will be a further one in St Peters Church on the 9th April and a coffee morning on the 19th March, not forgetting my Fashion show at the Edingburgh Wool shop in the Old Market Place Sudbury on March 16th. That concludes my report for this month, Jack Owen Mayor of Sudbury

New home for ‘Bringing Jessie Home’ BIG changes at Sudbury Museum and Heritage Centre include a tribute to the American 486th Bomb Group which arrived at the local airfield in the Spring of 1944. There’s a huge image of a damaged fourengined B-17 Flying Fortress seemingly zooming out of an aerial view of Sudbury as it was at around that time. Artist Stephen Binks painted every visible building in detail and the result is rated as being so important a record that a Stephen Binks’ painting before the consortium has bought the 486th showcase was prepared painting Bringing Jessie Home for the town. Contributors included Sudbury Museum Trust, the Sudbury Society and the Sudbury Freeman’s Society who all received generous legacies from local historian Anthony Wheeler. You can see it when the Town Hall is open though Museum trustees will be welcoming visitors to a free road show on Saturday 5th March from 10.30am1.30pm with an invitation to bring in ‘finds’ dug up in gardens or picked up on walks. Specialists will be on hand to identify objects such as fossils, coins, metalware and pottery. At the same time the Ephemera Society will be showing some of its growing collection of paperwork that throws light on aspects of past times in Sudbury and hoping for more contributions. A new 486th exhibit complements Bringing Jessie Home. On display will be memorabilia such as the silver wings worn by aircrew on uniforms that had the local girls swooning; reminders of a tragedy that cost nine lives; crash souvenirs collected by local people both adults and children. Then there’s a framed collection of the medals awarded to gunner Sergeant Robert Arnold who survived 30 missions into Nazi occupied Europe. The B-17s bristled with Browning machine guns as defence against enemy fighters. Alongside are official contemporary photographs of the aircraft and crew. This new display follows on the heels of the opening late last year of the museum’s new Anthony Wheeler room where new digital technology includes a big screen showing aspects of the town’s history and another screen featuring Edwardian Sudbury. You can also look online at the Museum Trust collection of almost 1,000 historic images of the town. ‘These are exciting times for the museum and we hope that people will visit regularly to see the ongoing changes,‘ said Trust member and secretary David Burnett.

Mass opposition to County Council cuts Residents of Sudbury, Cornard and the surrounding villages should be proud for the way they have stood up to the Tory run county council over the cuts to our fire service. Firefighters, past and present, along with residents, have volunteered their time and gathered nearly 4000 responses to the fire service consultation. To each and every one of you, thank you. If the county are really listening, they will not go ahead with the cuts to our fire service. But will they really listen? We'll see. Sudbury Town and Cornard Parish Council have supported our firefighters in opposing this cut, a pity our local county councillors couldn't have done the same. Perhaps, next year when they ask you for your vote at the county council elections, you could ask them to explain why they accepted cuts to our fire service? Or why they refused to even give an opinion? Well done everybody, whatever happens next, we have stood up to the county council, something we need to do more often to ensure Sudbury and the local area gets what it deserves. Luke Cresswell, Sudbury Town Councillor

Friend or Foe? By ex-punk Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church

The Irish poet WB Yeats once said, “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met yet.” We might have come along way from the appalling signs of guest-houses that once read, “No Irish, no blacks, no dogs” but the question of immigration still remains a lively topic and continues to potentially derail any carefully planned dinner party. So how keen are we to welcome strangers to our shore? It’s a debate that will only heat up more as the country prepares for a referendum over Europe. With the large exodus of displaced people fleeing from Islamic extremism only expected to grow, if not double in size, it feels like we are a nation struggling to come to terms with our conscience as much as our identity. I heard one well-known Church of England clergyman suggest that the most Christian thing to do is to let every single immigrant in. I have heard another say we must preserve our Christian/British heritage and keep them out. Then I hear of Iranian Muslims pretending to be Christian converts because they hear that is how to get asylum in the UK. That might a have a few of us up in arms, but then I wonder if it is any different to families pretending to be church-goers to get their children into local Church schools. Jesus tells the lawyers around him that if they want to inherit ‘eternal life’ they are going to have to love God with everything and, just as importantly, love their neighbours as themselves. That includes loving strangers. Jesus then goes on to tell ‘the Parable of the Good Samaritan’. First century Jews treated the Samaritans with suspicion, not least because they did not share the same religious and cultural values as themselves. Yet, it was the kindness of the Samaritan, which left Jesus’ listeners most challenged. Their own countryman, who is left for dead, is found and cared for by the stranger, using his own money to make the man well. Recently I heard how the Church in Kenya paid tribute to a Muslim man, Salah Sabdow Farah, who died helping save the lives of Christians. Mr Farah was on a bus in Mandera, north-eastern Kenya, when Islamist militants belonging to al-Shabaab stopped the vehicle and demanded that the Christians be separated from the Muslims. Mr Farah, a teacher and father of five, was shot as he stood alongside other Muslims who had refused to be separated from the Christians. Two died in the immediate attack and Mr Farah was wounded, but he died later during emergency surgery. The stories of ‘The Good Samaritan’ and ‘The Good Muslim’ challenge me to the core to see all strangers as ‘friends I haven’t met yet’. We have a saying at our church: “Come as you are!” In other words, be yourself and we’ll do our best not to judge you. We are not saying don’t change, but the first step of friendship surely is accepting each other, even when our differences make us feel uncomfortable. Stour Valley Vineyard is a growing family church with Sunday Services 10.30am every weekend at the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury (includes children and young people’s programme). Freshly brewed coffee is served before start. It gets busy, so allow time for parking. www.stourvalleyvineyard.org/i’m-new

Long Melford is welcoming a new family behind the bar of a popular local Nik and Kate Forsstrom have moved to Suffolk after many years in charge of successful London pubs, to start running the Hare in Long Melford. For Kate, it is a return home, having grown up in Claydon and attended Claydon High School in the early 1990’s. The couple have both been managing pubs for 20 years each, most recently together running the famous Prince Alfred pub in Maida Vale. They recently decided to make the move and leave London in search of the perfect Suffolk village pub. Nik said: “We fell in love with the Hare as soon as we saw it. It is one of those beautiful pubs that ticks all the boxes – well-kept, looks inviting and with lots of potential. We were so excited when Greene King told us it was ours. It is the perfect village pub.” The Hare is owned by leading pub retailer and brewer, Greene King, but the responsibility for the business now lies with Nik and Kate as the pub’s new tenants. The Hare is known locally for its food and drink, sizable garden and function room. Kate commented: “We will be expanding the wine list, and also adding some new play equipment in the garden, as well as adding other little touches to make families feel more welcome. Our new menu will be based around our favourite pub classic dishes. Everything will be made in-house and, where ever possible, we will use local produce. For us, the most important thing is customers know they can always expect a friendly welcome, in a great-looking pub serving quality food and drink, so we will be focusing on making sure we deliver that each and every day.” Nik and Kate will be living at the pub with two children, Oskar, 7 and Freya, 4. Nik commented: “We both wanted to get out of the city to bring up our family. We also wanted a pub that felt exactly as a pub should – at the heart of the community, and that is not something you typically find in London. Long Melford is idyllic and we are really looking forward to settling here, getting to know all our neighbours and running the best pub in the village.” As their only business, Nik and Kate will be regular faces behind the bar alongside the existing team. The pair are planning summer events in the garden and a regular quiz night, as well as wine and food matching evenings. Clive Chesser, managing director for Greene King Pub Partners, said: “Kate and Nik have earned a reputation for running great pubs and I am in no doubt they will be warmly welcomed by everyone in Long Melford. We are very proud to have them behind the bar of a Greene King pub.” To find out more about the Hare, visit www.hareinn.com

On the 4th February the Library Staff with a little help from some volunteers organised a Harry Potter Night, following the huge success of last year’s event. Children of all ages poured into the Library witches and wizards abounded. It was great to young people enjoying themselves with simple entertainment and stories. The talk given by Lord Andrew Phillips in February about Sudbury during the war time was so popular and well attended we were in danger of running out of chairs. Our next talk ‘Travelling through time’ on March 17th will David Burnett telling us about the research and writing of his latest book about Chilton. Tickets available at the Library £5 - doors opening at 7pm for a 7.30 start. All monies raised in these talks organised by the Friends of Sudbury Library are reinvested in the Library, our latest expenditure is to make a 50% contribution to the costs of WIFI which is a free service to Library Members. Long Melford Parish Report Councillor Richard Kemp Tresco, New Road, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9JY 01787 378149 richard.kemp@suffolk.gov.uk

Suffolk will be left with one Magistrates Court as Ministry of Justice confirms Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft closures Campaigners who fought to save two Suffolk magistrates courts voiced their disappointment as it was confirmed the centres will be closed. Proposals by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to shut Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ and Family Court and the North East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Lowestoft were met with widespread opposition, as officials said it would seriously hamper access to justice. But the concerns and objections from police, lawyers, councils, MPs, magistrates and the EADT’s Justice for Suffolk campaign failed to change the mind of the Government as they look to save millions of pounds by closing courts nationwide. The Lowestoft court is scheduled to shut its doors by July while the Bury court is due to close by September – although there was hope that some cases would still be heard in the town. But the overall effect will be to leave Suffolk with just one magistrates’ court, in Ipswich, and many of those involved in cases facing much longer journeys to court.

Twelve pairs of ladies took part in a 9 hole greensomes competition on the 4th February. Winners of the 9 golf competition with 17 points were Lesley Garnett and Barbara Jones. Second were Roz Clements and Gwen Broadhead with 15 points and third Anne Hemmings and Edel Rew with 13 points. Lady Captain Betty Cox’s chosen charity for her captain’s year is the Children’s Society. Following the golf, she had invited Russell Rolph from Showing off the prizes for the Lady the Society to give a short talk about Captain’s chosen charity fund the society and its work. The ladies raiser and social event are Lady had also been invited to bring on Captain, Betty Cox, with Russell photographs of themselves as Rolph from the Children’s Society children for everyone to see if they could guess who belonged to which image. Sally takes a Bow at Newton Green A year of slings and arrows could be on the horizon for Newton Green Golf Club’s new ladies’ captain Sally Cade. She hails from Nottingham, and dressed up as Robin Hood for her frosty morning drive-in. Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, the Sheriff of Nottingham and a whole host of other characters from the forest turned up to support the recently retired Colchester school games teacher. Vice captain Rebecca Evans (Maid Marion), The big crowd on the first captain Sally Cade (Robin Hood) tee then saw her hit an and Di Cunningham (Friar Tuck) arrow-like drive of long bow proportions down the fairway. The opening shot of her season travelled 194 yards, a record for a ladies drive-in at the club, and beat a few drives by some incoming male captains in recent years. Before starting her season, Sally watched retiring captain Sheila Walter conclude her year by putting out on the 18th green. Drive-in results: 10-hole Stableford, 53 Angela Chapman and Susan Sills, 51 Sue Thurgate and Pat Walsh, 50 (ocb) Glenys Grove and Clarice Chittenden, 50 Pat Hawkins and Sue Hobbs.
