Sudbury Speakers Club Triumphs at East Anglia Public Speaking Competition
Members of Sudbury Speakers Club are celebrating after taking the top awards in the three disciplines that were contested at the recently held Association Of Speakers Clubs East Anglia Area Public Speaking Competition.
Sudbury were competing against leading ASC club speakers from Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Colchester, Felixstowe, and Norwich.
A team of judges made up of members from each club carefully considered the contribution of each contestant against criteria set down by the ASC.
Julie Thomson won the Speech contest with a thought provoking contribution titled “Should Cyclists Wear Safety Equipment?” In this discipline judges were looking at how the speech was structured, was it convincing, and was audience rapport evident, alongside other essentials learnt through the ASC educational programme that go into writing and delivering a powerful speech.
June Freeman won the Topics contest. This exercise is to encourage

and develop a speaker’s ability to speak spontaneously without any previous preparation (as we are all called upon to do in such situations as interviews). Without any prior knowledge of the question June was asked “Does modern technology hinder social interaction and lead to isolation of people?” The judges assessed the way in which the answer was structured and how speaking skills such as use of the voice and body language were used.
The third contest was judging the skill of evaluation. Learning to give and receive feedback is an important skill. As part of the ASC training members learn how to assess and evaluate other speakers and deliver feedback in a way that is clear, constructive and compelling.
Sudbury SC member Sue Ayres presented a ‘target speech’ , titled “The Alternative To Divorce In Bygone Days.” The contestants

presented their feedback to Sue, the audience and the judges. Julie Thomson was declared the winner.
Sudbury club President, Kevin Northcott, commented afterwards on a friendly and supportive organisation.

Facts And Fiction
people were born in this month. From, writers, politicians, soldiers and royalty and events that instigated change.I also researched some other historical events that happened to be in April.
Starting with the 1st of April in 1815 Otto Van Bismarck (known as The Iron Chancellor) was born in Prussia. A man destined to dramatically change the history of Europe; he hated political parties but proved to be a master politician. As a reactionary he instituted social security for the aged and socialised medicine.
April 2nd, 742 Charles Charlemagne was born and eventually became except for British Isles, Spain and Northern Italy. Moving onto 1725 the famous Italian seducer Giovanni Casanova was born, and Beethoven’s First Symphony was performed in Vienna.
In 1203 on April 3rd, King John murdered his nephew Arthur who was only fourteen. John considered that Arthur was a threat to his throne; so, in a state of drunkenness he stabbed him and had him thrown in to the Seine with a large stone tied to his body. Later his body was
Dame des Presles. John continued to reign for another thirteen years totally unrepentant and unpunished!
April 4th, 1648, the great wood carver Grinling Gibbons was born in
April 6th, 1909, The American explorer Robert Peary reaches the North who was accompanied by his wife on his expeditions.
William Booth the founder of the Salvation Army was born, on the tenth of this month in Nottingham.Wherever help is needed the Salvation Army is there, especially caring for the homeless and hungry.
April 14th Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, he died at 7.22 am the following morning, he was 56 years old. The assassinator, John Wilkes Booth leaped onto the stage after the shooting, but he caught the spur
injury he managed to escape and wasn’t captured until two weeks later when he was tracked down in a barn in Virginia; where he was shot by a soldier, Boston Corbet. John died from his wound the following morning after sucking on a brandy-soaked cloth provided by a soldier who took pity on him.
April 15th 1452 One of the most famous talented painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor and achitect Leonardo da Vinci was born in Anchiano in Italy.
Our wonderful Queen Elizabeth arrived at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair in the home of her maternal grandparents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore on Apiril 21st 1926 at 2.40 am.
April 23rd 1564 William Shakespeare was born, and in 1775 the painter J.M.W.Turner was born. Finally, on 25th April 1599 Oliver Cromwell was
Abbey. Although his wife Catherine of Bragnaza was unable to produce any live children he actually acknowledged at least twelve illegitimate children, I wonder where these decendents are now?

Writing from the Rectory
enjoy the odd moment of the warmth of the sun on our backs and the birdsong across the meadows.

sense of promise in the air as the blossom starts to appear. Whilst the wonder of seasons changing can feel less wonderful and more draining through the darker months, it is easy to experience a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of nature, and marvel at creation, as we move into the spring and summer months. The pagan celebrations of such times give us the ‘Easter Bunny’, but it might not be so obvious that the traditional Easter Egg is a symbol of the Easter story – Jesus died so that we might be made right with God and then rose from the tomb on Easter Day, three days later, defeating death. That empty tomb of Easter Day is recognised in the hollow egg of our now very traditional chocolate gift.
At St Gregory’s Church we are keen to welcome you to another free family event this Easter Saturday – an easter egg hunt with a guaranteed egg win (!) and plenty of craft activities to keep the will use the outside space too, but it will be fully accessible with an alternative hunt indoors for those not so secure on rougher terrain. Please book online at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/st-gregoryschurch to reserve your guaranteed egg – one per booking. For those who would like a more peaceful, contemplative approach to Easter, do consider joining your local churches on the Walk of Witness on Good Friday, leaving All Saints’ (Church Street) at 1pm of the Cross’ at 2pm. There is also a Maundy Thursday Service at Saints’ at 11am on Good Friday. Our Easter celebrations conclude at 10am with services at both All Saints’ and St Gregory’s. Whether you are a regular churchgoer, or someone wondering why our services or events.
With blessings this Eastertide, Reverend Andrew
