Two Sudbury optometrists have completed a gruelling bike ride to help raise more than £3,500 for the British Heart Foundation. Will Norman and Joanna Williams, of Wardale Williams the Opticians were part of a nine-man team, which completed the 55-mile London to Brighton Bike Ride on Sunday. The team was made up members of staff from Wardale Williams and sister company Observatory the Opticians, which have practices in Suffolk, Essex and north London. Both Mr Norman and Ms Williams managed to tackle the Ditchling Beacon, which reaches a height of more than 800 feet near the end of the course. “I am delighted to have been involved with such a fantastic team and to have raised so much money for a great cause. Taking part in the event was an experience I will never forget. It was challenging, but also very enjoyable,” said Mr Norman. The British Heart Foundation London to Brighton Bike Ride has been held for the past 40 years and is one of the charity’s largest annual fundraising events. The charity is the UK’s largest funder of research into cardiovascular disease. Jonathan Foreman, the company’s managing director, who also completed the ride, said: “The team completed the ride in around six hours and several of us managed to get to the top of the Ditchling Beacon without

Nine Babergh Car Parks Retain Safer Parking Awards Five car parks in Sudbury and four in Hadleigh have retained their Park Mark status under the national Safer Parking Scheme. The council-operated car parks at Girling Street, Mill Lane, Station Road, Stour Street and The Station in Sudbury, and the High Street, Magdalen Road, Maiden Way and Stonehouse Road in Hadleigh, have all met the requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the Police. The assessment covers - amongst other criteria - the management of the car parks, crime recording and statistics, vehicular and pedestrian access, and provision of lighting and signage, to ensure that measures are in place to create a safe environment. For customers, using a Park Mark Safer Parking facility means that the car park has been vetted by the Police and has measures in place to create a safe environment. Cllr. Frank Lawrenson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “We are thrilled that we have retained our accreditation under this nationwide scheme. This demonstrates our commitment to providing and maintaining safe and clean car parks throughout the district, and we hope that this will encourage more visitors into our market towns.” Peter Gravells, Park Mark Scheme Area Manager, said: “I am delighted that Babergh District Council is in the Safer Parking Scheme. It is evident that through their management practices and the excellent physical attributes of the car parks that every consideration is given to the user. “ Park Mark status was first awarded to the Girling Street, Hadleigh High Street and Stonehouse Road car parks in July 2005, to the Magdalen Road and Maiden Way car parks in October 2008, and to the Mill Lane, Station Road, Stour Street and Sudbury Station car parks in August 2010.

In response to an appeal by a local family, Sudbury Rotary Club took on the challenge of creating a garden for their severely disabled son. This involved creating from scratch an entire garden with raised beds, pathways, fencing and a summer house. Ridgeons of Sudbury had already donated all the materials needed to create this garden but the essential need was to find volunteers who could undertake all the work. Rotarian Don Watson and his wife Caroline successfully persuaded some of their contacts to provide a digger and the expertise to supervise the project. The next challenge was to find enough volunteers and we approached Delphi - this resulted in six young apprentices carrying out the hard labouring involved. Funding from the project came from various generous sources All this work happened in the Spring and early Summer 2015 and has resulted in a beautiful sensory garden which can be enjoyed by this little boy and his family for years to come. A celebration to which friends and neighbours and all those involved in the project took place in early July to formally open the garden and to erect a plaque acknowledging the work of all those involved. Stock up your medicine cabinet Summer is now here and is the ideal time to stock up your medicine cabinet Having a stock of items which will help you deal with minor injury and illness at home means you won’t have a mad dash to your pharmacy if illness or injury occurs – and you won’t end up unnecessarily at your hospital’s A&E department. Ask your local pharmacist what would be best to stock up on, but as a general rule the basic essentials are: • Paracetamol – to relive most aches and pains, headaches and menstrual pain • Oral rehydration salts – these help to restore your body’s natural balance of fluid and minerals if you are suffering from diarrhoea, fever or vomiting • Anti-diarrhoea tablets • Sticking plasters – for cuts and grazes • Indigestion remedy – to relieve heartburn, stomach ache and trapped wind Be prepared and ready to deal with unexpected minor injury and illness this summer! The NHS belongs to you, please do not waste medicines Wasted medicines are costing the NHS almost £300 million every year and GPs in Suffolk are seeking your help to reduce that waste: • Check what you need before placing your order • Do not stockpile medication • Always check your bag of medicines before you leave the pharmacy and hand back what you do not need • Once medicines have left the pharmacy they cannot be recycled If you are still ordering repeat prescription medication and aren’t using it yourself, please speak to your GP or pharmacist. They won’t be annoyed or angry, in fact they’ll be pleased to help you resolve the issue. They’ll help ensure that you have the right medicine for your needs, which will in turn reduce the amount of wasted NHS medicines.

Brother and Sister Exhibit for Ipswich Maritime Celebrations Brother and sister Richard and Debbie Wendt will be collaborating for the first time in a joint art exhibition to celebrate the maritime festival in Ipswich Town Hall in August. Entitled ‘Wendt on Water’ it will be showing in the tea room in July and August , so this is an ideal opportunity to see their work in a historic town centre setting, whilst relaxing with a tea or coffee. Both were brought up in Sudbury, moving to Ipswich 8 and 6 years ago respectively, and have used their artistic skills to portray areas of beauty, working on the theme of Ipswich Marina, with their own individual interpretations, Debbie using oil paint on canvas and Richard with his graphic illustrations. Debbie has had a few breaks in her career as a selling artist, but since coming back to painting, she has discovered that painting large scale has given her a sense of freedom of expression in her brushwork and use of bold colours and has developed a few affective styles like the Impressionist ‘drip’ style of ‘New Ipswich Marina’. Debbie attended Gt Cornard Upper School and worked at the large Sudbury company Delphi Diesel Systems, before obtaining a BA Honours Degree in Art in the Community in Roehampton in London1997. Debbie wanted to give something back to the Sudbury community she grew up in, and last year won second place from the NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, for a competition for art work to be placed in the newly built Health and Community Health centre in Sudbury. A print of her work has been permanently installed in the Sudbury Health and Community centre and she received an award of £1500. Richard was the first to show his artistry.in the family, graduating with a BA Honours degree from Camberwell School of Art in London. He now works as a self-employed graphic designer and has had his work published by major publishing houses. Richard has also managed to combine his graphic skills with fine art, producing clearly defined and beautiful scenes of Ipswich and the local area, which have proved to be very popular in outlets all around Suffolk and beyond. Debbie and Richard are carrying on the family tradition of artistic endeavour. Their father is related to Lionel Wendt, the most famous artist to come out of Sri Lanka. Lionel Wendt was a Dutch Burgher, a musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later became famous as a photographer and cinematographer. Wendt also founded the 43 Group in the 1940s, the first Modernist art group in Sri Lanka. The Lionel Wendt Art Centre was built in his honour in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. You can view ‘Wendt on Water’ from Tuesday 28th July to Saturday 22nd August in Gallery One (The Tearoom) and there is an Open View which is open to the public 1st August 2.00pm to 4.00pm where giclee prints, greeting cards and postcards of Debbie and Richard’s work will also be on sale.

Plan for success with Fit2drive Passing the practical driving test is hard. It's meant to be that way. This is borne out by the first time pass rate which is just 47.9%. So over half the people who take the test do not pass. You think that's bad? In fact the pass rate has steadily risen from just over 43% 6 years ago to the current level. Here's another thing; although there were 120,000 fewer people taking the test last year compared to 6 years ago, the amount of 'zero fault' tests has risen by over 2,300! This further suggests that standards are improving - and that has to be a good thing. On your test, one big factor to consider is how your actions might affect other road users. Remember, anything you do which causes another road user to STOP, SLOW or SWERVE will nearly always result in a 'serious fault' being recorded which means a failed test. By developing good Observation, Anticipation and Planning (or OAP as we call it!) such errors may be avoided. For some, it doesn't come naturally, but the good news is that the right kind of practice helps to build confidence and improve this valuable skill. Confidence can also be an issue even for those that have passed their test. Wherever you're at, Fit2drive can help you get where you want to be. What are you waiting for? www.fit2driveuk.com

Ever thought of volunteering? Are you a parent? Could you spare a few hours each week to visit a family?

Newsreader hosts Sixth Form challenge

Have you answered yes? Have you considered becoming a Home-Start volunteer? Home-Start South Suffolk & District is a local charity supporting families with young children who are facing difficulties or challenges, across the South Suffolk and West Ipswich areas, by recruiting and training volunteers to visit these families in the family’s own homes. Volunteers support the families weekly and provide either a listening ear and somebody to talk to, or practical support; helping the family get out and about, listening to children reading, support with cooking, help with appointments or just finding out what other services are available to them. Volunteering for Home-Start is a great opportunity to explore your own individual skills and use your life experiences to help other families. The only qualification we ask for is having the experience of bringing up children and understanding the pressures of raising a young family. For those who wish to use the experience to help in gaining employment, we also offer CERTA accredited Level 1 and 2 training. Our preparation courses are run regularly in Ipswich and the Hadleigh areas with the next planned for Autumn 2015. For more details on specific dates and locations please contact the office.

Students from the three academies are joined by newsreader Jonathan Wills, Amanda Skinner and Emma Mobbs of Wardale Williams and Penny Wilby from the Best of Sudbury. Sixth formers from three Suffolk academies have been battling it out in a competition to prove who has the superior mental and physical agility. Students from the Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard, the Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill and the Newmarket Academy took part in the first ever Wardale Williams Sixth Form Trust Challenge last week. The event, held at the Thomas Gainsborough School and hosted by ITV newsreader Jonathan Wills, saw students compete in four different activities; the activities included The University Challenge, Public Speaking, The Engineering Challenge and The Physical Challenge. Kenny Alexander, Director of Sixth Form at the Thomas Gainsborough School, said: “This was a great opportunity for the three academies to get together and compete. The idea of the competition was to give the students the opportunity to test their skills in a competitive environment. The competition is aimed at helping our students to develop their personal skills and give them an experience of dealing with a pressure situation, which we hope will benefit them in their future lives and careers.” The event was sponsored by local opticians Wardale Williams, which has practices in both Sudbury and Haverhill. The competition was won by Samuel Ward. Students from the Sudbury practice manager Amanda Skinner, who Thomas attended the event, said: “It was great to see how Gainsborough School competing in enthusiastic the students were and their ability was a physical challenge very impressive. We always try to support local educational facilities whenever possible and we were delighted to be the sponsor of this innovative and exciting challenge, which we hope will be the first of many.” The event was also supported by Penny Wilby of the Best of Sudbury and Howard Lay Chief Executive of the Samuel Ward Trust.

Fluid movement at Orchard Barn Orchard Barn is off-grid, so no mains electricity, no mains gas and no mains water. However we need water for our construction projects and for the plants on the vegetable plot. We have a large pond and rainwater is collected at various points around the site. But movement of that water around the site, particularly the volumes required by thirsty vegetables, means we are looking at ways to make life easier. A tank at the highest point of the garden would make gravity watering possible but we have to get the water to that tank. One idea is a solar powered pump trickle feeding it from one of the rainwater tanks. A low-tech alternative would be a hand-pump and one volunteer has produced a prototype made out of drainpipe, a broom-handle, wood and flexible plastic. Well there goes another month and what a month, I have never experience a busier month than the one I have just had as the Sudbury Mayor, with almost 30 seperate visits both in and outside of Sudbury. My first engagement was the delightful but nerve racking task of selecting the Carnival Queen & Princesses with my fellow judges, a daunting challenge, it doesn't matter how sincere you are and how many times you say there are no losers, you can see the disappointment in the children and Parents faces, there were so many pretty dresses and hair arrangement on show, you could see how much effort had beed put in.But a decision was required, we had 2 princesses to choose from 16 entries and a Queen from 6 entrants, the Princesses were from 2 age groups 5 to 10 and 11 to 12, the younger age group Princess that was chosen was Maisie Higgs and the 11 to 12 chosen was Chloe Thomas. Selecting the Queen was also a tricky affair with all looking glamourous, the judges selected Georgia Pilgrim to represent Sudbury on this occasion. The event was organised and run very efficiently by Sue Creamer with the support of others who will now have the task of designing and building the float for the young contestants to take part in the carnival procession in August. At last it looks like the summer has arrived, doesn’t it make you feel a whole lot better when it’s warm and sunny, but along with the sun comes risk, sun burn, exhaustion, lethargy etc. so be careful and keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbours, it’s not only the cold that they suffer from. It’s School Fete time again with an invite to Tudor road and Woodhall Primary School Fete’s and judging the best fancy dress and model garden, again with such high standards making the task extremely difficult. The Taste of Sudbury Food & Drink Festival was an exhilarating experience which exceeded last years event both in footfall, quality of demonstrations and the exhibitors at this years festival, well done to all that made it happen. By the time you have read this the ‘Party in the Park’ would have taken place which I know takes an awful lot of organising by the Town Hall staff. I made a statement when I became Mayor and that was to ask the Town Council to adopt a zero attitude to litter louts and dog fouling, as part of that process we have been running an anti litter competition in our Primary Schools, with all children along with their Head Teacher encouraged to take part by thinking of a suitable slogan and drawing, we are delighted with over 400 children taking part from St Gregs. Pot Kiln, Tudor road St Josephs and Woodhall with the winner having their drawing appear on the Wardens van for the whole of the year. The winner was Grace Hiskett year 1 from at St Gregorys Primary School. There were a number of events being held at Thomas Gainsborough House for both celebrating the achievement of the great artist and promoting the work of the House and committee who are doing a great job in promoting the house and enhancing the Tourism in Sudbury. We attended a reception held by the High Sherriff of Suffolk in June where many dignitories had a chance to compare chains and medals. The graduation ceremony at the Thomas Gainsborough School was a lovely occasion with so many talented young people in the area we are set fair for the future. With it being 70 yrs since the end of hostilities in the 1939 to 1945 war, there have been a number of occasions when the country remembered the sacrifices that were made by our Fathers and Grandfathers, Sudbury was no different when we remember those members from Sudbury and the surrounding area who guarranteed our freedom with the ultimate sacrifice. I was invited to attend the 'Gateway Olympics' with the intention of presenting prizes and medals to the successful teams, the event was organised by John Philips of Go Start fame, who was able to arrange for several clubs from Suffolk, Essex & Cambridge, representing adults with learning difficulties, to take part in a variety of sporting events, but they seemed to be having so much fun that the timing went out the window, as I had another engagement to

attend I returned later in the day to present the honours, well done John for a well organised and enjoyable event. One of the benefits of being the Mayor is that you see first hand how many people are involved in voluntary work and the commitment that they put in, I was invited to attend the Sudbury & District Annual General Meeting and take part in the official opening of the 'Constable Cabin' at Bradfield Combust, which is a Training and Leisure camp site for Scout & Guides.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon Family Music Day featuring local young talent

Shirley Moore Chief Exec of the Befriending scheme together with Fiona Allen runner up of the ‘Inspirational Learner of the Year Award’ and her Mother On another occasion I was delighted to be invited to take part in the presentation of an award to Fiona Allen, who was runner up in the 'Inspirational Learner of the Year' category in the Suffolk Adult Learner awards, a real credit to her and her family. I have probably mentioned this before but I see no reason for not mentioning it again, my chosen charities for the year are, the Mayors Benelovent Fund, the Kernos Centre, the West Suffolk Autistic Society all of which are local based charities, I was hoping to find a local Prostrate Cancer charity in the area, but there doesn't seem to be one, so I will be visiting a group that has just been set up in Sudbury called, the Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group, which as the name suggests provides help & support to family members and those who have been affected by cancer. So during my term I will be holding a number of events to raise funds and awareness of these charities, I have already started with my Saturday coffee and cake mornings set at the best price in Sudbury at £2 with an opportunity to come and have a chat, a moan or just enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake. Iam also having a Curry night at the 'India' curry house on Monday August the 10th, the cost is £20 with half of all money raised going towards these charities, so please come along for an enjoyable meal knowing that you are directly contributing to local and worthwhile charities. It was nice to see so many members of the Public turn up at the recent Town Council meeting the other night, I know it was probably because we had the altenative proposals for the Bus Station on the Agenda, never the less, it gave around 30 local people an opportunity to have their say, and they did, i'd like to see more members of the public attend, perhaps we need more controversial matters on the agenda to get you to come. I started by mentioning the Carnival, so I might as well finish by mentioning it, we are hoping to have twice as many different entries in the procession this year than last and more to keep the youngsters interested up at the Delphi sports field. A number of fund raising events are being arranged to support the funding of the event, by the time you have read this we would have held our Table sale in St Peters and Party in the Park is history, but we are holding a 'Community Garden/Garage sale' in Great Cornard & Sudbury, a Carnival Dance on the 29th August in the Delphi club with the Carnival Procession and Fete on the 30th August, please support these events to ensure we have a carnival in 2016. Well I think that's all for now, see you at my next coffee & cake morning. Jack Owen, Sudbury Mayor

However she reckons without the mysterious Mrs Erlynne who persuades her to return home, which she does – but in her haste she leaves her fan behind! News from Sudbury Rotary Club Sudbury Rotary Club is having a busy summer. A new initiative to give school children the chance to utilise the natural environment in an around Sudbury has seen two schools take part in wildlife trips. We have facilitated trips for Woodhall School and Acton Primary School to Arger Fen and the riverside Visitor Centre at Cornard, in partnership with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the River Stour Trust. We plan to extend the programme to include more schools and more places to visit and we will be writing to schools later in the year; we will continue to raise funds towards the project so that there is no charge for the children or for the schools involved. Classes which attend the programme will be presented with a Rotary Club Award to display in their classroom. We would also like to follow up other links with schools, perhaps through Rotary’s Interact scheme, designed for children aged 12 to 18, which encourages children to design projects, working with Rotary, to help communities at home and overseas Our annual “Kids Out” event took place on 15th July when President Gill Norton and Rotarian Marjorie McConnell accompanied children and school staff from the Specialist Support classes at St Gregory’s Primary School on a trip to Colchester Zoo. “This was a delightful day out and a joy to share in the children’s excitement” said Gill. St Peters Sudbury was full to capacity for the 38th Rotary Concert, at the end of June which this year featured the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mathew Andrews. Following the traditional format, the second half was truly a promenade concert with the audience enthusiastically participating in the fun. A very popular event, taking place later in July is the annual Cricket Club lunch and then in early August members will be attending a production of much Ado about Nothing at Kentwell Hall Sudbury Rotary Club will be taking part in Transition Sudbury’s Ecofair in October which will offer many stalls demonstrating ways of llving more sustainably. This bi-annual event is organized by the Sudbury Market Town Partnership and has grown in popularity and visitor numbers since its introduction. Rotary will be promoting its International End Polio Now campaign and encouraging children to plant purple crocuses – purple is the colour of the dye used to dip a finger of children who have been vaccinated as the medical teams move from village to village. We will also be promoting Rotary’s environmental work with local schools. The Rotary Club of Sudbury meets every Monday at the Mill Hotel at 12.30pm, for lunch and often with a guest speaker. Why not join us? On 24th August Sue Morgan will be talking to us about Help for Heroes and over the coming months we will have a number of members telling us about people who have inspired them in life. Rotary is open to people of all ages. As a Rotarian you are not only part of an active local club but also part of a world-wide organisation with over 32,000(!) clubs across the world where you will be a welcome visitor. If you would like more information or would like to come along to one of our lunchtime meetings to see what it is like, please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07787 470876 or look us up on our website. http://www.rotaryribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=503 or Google Sudbury Rotary Club. Sea Shanties for All

The recent uttering’s of that smug unfunny lovie Stephen Fry and published in our national press (thus setting a fine example to our easily impressed yoof) fill this old dinosaur with disgust. Proudly boasting that he has sniffed up the odd line of coke in the Royal household (as well as at the BBC and the Reptile House) it is amusing and apparently also common practice among his celebrity circle. I erroneously thought that not only was this habit objectionable but illegal. Personally I have no problem with this odious creature either sniffing or injecting himself with whatever he fancies, its just the consequences I find of concern. First, is it really amusing or even responsible of the press to headline such trivia so that the gullible in our fractured society would consider such a practice to be normal and to be emulated. Secondly, and of far greater concern, is the immense damage caused to the citizens of those countries who manufacture and export the stuff. Anarchy, street warfare and assassinations and gang rape are the norm so that Fry and his chums can get their illegal high. Have they no concept of the human misery caused by their habit? At least we of an alcoholic disposition (taken in moderation of course) know we are supporting our farmers, brewers and Innkeepers. Surely a pint of Greene King’s or Dublin’s best is a far greener and more civilised mode of relaxation that throwing a gang funded line of charlie up your snout! Also the profits from same are taxable thus ensuring our politicians and public sector can retain their gravy train existence. I am reminded of the words of that great Irish writer and alcoholic Brendan Behan who, when remarking on the privileged wealth of the Guinness family “You must remember Brendan, the Guinness family have done a lot for the people of Dublin”. “To be sure” he replied “but the people of Dublin have done a damn sight more for the Guinness family!” However, as cocaine is still allegedly illegal, have Mr. Plod felt Fry’s collar and at least incarcerated him mercifully out of our sight for but a short period? No way, such a precedent would keep them busy with the majority of the luvies in what passes for the British entertainment industry for years. Now, by popular request, let normal service be resumed with news of the Reptile House. Apparently the Ministry of Works (or whatever they are called today) have discovered that our mother of parliaments is toxic and downright unsafe and unfit for purpose. Talk about stating the obvious, but no, they were not talking about the inhabitants but the structure itself. Never, since the blessed Oliver Cromwell, have we, the downtrodden proletariat, had such a God sent opportunity of righting our society. Give the rebuilding to British Rail (thus ensuring it will take years) and put all our politicians and misnamed public servants on gardening leave, as it is known in that other bastion of respectability, the Banking Sector. What about the cost you may ask. Don’t be silly, its just a question of economics. Pay them just their basic (pre-increase) salary, about double the national average and consign them to where they can do little damage, say Thetford or wherever. However, as they will have no access to their very iffy expense accounts vast savings will be inevitable. Once out of the chamber they will be unable to pass any more silly laws (such as halving the drink driving limit) and will content themselves with whatever such creatures do when not being a burden on us. We must remember to segregate them for should they start breeding then the inevitable consequences will be more politicians to keep in the future (just Google Clan Kinnock). Its not more government we need, its less! Should there be a constitutional crisis or a national emergency just call in the Royal Household. They may dress like a Gilbert and Sullivan stage set but they possess the same common sense and ease of manner. So please, if we have to displace this unsavoury lot, even for a relatively short period, let us take this momentous opportunity to put the Great back into Britain, you know it makes sense. Needing to recharge your batteries By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church Are you ‘power mad’? Does the lack of power make you anxious? Do you sometimes feel jealous of other’s power? I am, of course, talking about the problem of your mobile phone having a low battery. You know how it goes. You leave home and realise that you have forgotten to charge your device overnight. You panic. You start thinking how much time do you have left. You become more anxious and go into energy-saving mode. You search frantically around cafés and public places looking for an electric socket. It is a modern trauma we all now face, and the price we pay for wanting 24/7 communication. Each of our days begin believing that we will have the maximum access to our friends and family. We have the certainty that we will be able to play Candy Crush in the queue as we wait for our coffee. It’s a controlling thing and I am not sure I always feel comfortable with it. I have wondered in my times of despair if anything good can come out of a low battery crisis, but then I read how our power dependency actually led to something good happening. In 2012 the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in New York caused widespread outages across the city. Panicked New Yorkers took to the streets to find a way to contact their loved ones. Some people did what they hadn’t done for a long time – use a public call box. Others gathered around sockets in public spots as if they were campfires. There were even stories of people hailing cabs just to use a charging socket. In the midst of the chaos I heard of one heartwarming twist on human generosity. It is how those with power became ‘digital Good Samaritans’. They ran extension leads out of their homes and even providing cables to charge up strangers’ mobile phones. Just think, free electricity! When people are desperate enough, they will always seek out those with power. As we enter the summer holidays, many of us are undoubtedly looking forward to recharging our batteries. We might be doing that by seeking the sun on a Greek Island or just simply taking time off work to be with the family and enjoying some day trips together. But the big thing for me is: how do we recharge throughout the year, not just in the month of August? Where do we look for that kind of power? The Bible talks about how God created humanity to rest on the seventh day of the week, to enjoy time out from the fields and celebrate the fruit of our labour. In particular, the book of Exodus encourages us to see the fourth commandment as a sacred space to put down whatever we are doing and rest our ox and donkey, so that all may be refreshed around us too. Although I suspect not many of us will have an ox or a donkey, the point is made that everyone benefits from rest. For those who have faith in God we see rest as empowerment. And the rest we receive comes in the shape of a loving Father in Heaven who wants to empower us through his son, Jesus, to live life to the full. Paul the apostle writes in the Bible, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.“ We don’t need to stay anxious about never having enough power. And the rewards are rich. We are offered “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding” And something that “will guard hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Whatever you are doing this summer, rest well and go in peace. Stour Valley Vineyard is a family church. Sunday Services are at 10.30am in the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury (includes a full children and young people’s programme). We also operate Storehouse Foodbank, which serves Sudbury and the surrounding area. If you know a family or someone who is struggling, please contact our Storehouse team. Walking football strolls into Sudbury People in Sudbury will soon have the opportunity to take part in a slower version of the beautiful game. Walking football is a craze sweeping the UK and weekly sessions will soon be held at Ryman League Club AFC Sudbury’s Wardale Williams Stadium. The games will be played on the club’s new state-of-the-art 3G pitch which is now being laid and will be ready for use in August. 3G is an all-weather surface using synthetic fibres and rubbers to look, feel and react like grass. The surface was recently used at the Woman’s World Cup, where England finished third. The club is now urging anyone interested in taking part in the walking football sessions to register their interest. AFC Sudbury director Richard Instance said: “We are really excited to be adding walking football to the various weekly activities which will be held at the stadium once the 3G pitch is open for use. “Walking football is a fast growing sport with people all over the country getting involved, so we are delighted to introduce it to the people of Sudbury. To start with the walking football sessions will be held weekly and teams will just turn up and play. However, in the future we are hoping to create a league format. “The sport is much harder than it looks and it is a great way for people to keep fit and healthy. We are now urging teams which would like to participate in walking football to contact us so we can get them booked in.” Walking football is a variant of association football with the key difference being players are not allowed to run and will concede a free kick if they do so. Sliding tackles are banned to avoid injury and originally the game was played without goalkeepers, although this is now optional. The only other difference is the ball is not allowed above hip-height. The sport was devised, during 2011, by the Chesterfield F.C. Community Trust. Following significant media coverage several other clubs took up this version of the game and it is now played all over the country. The manner in which the sport is played promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst producing the least stress on the body making it accessible to all age groups. Anyone wanting to know more about walking football or other opportunities to play on the new 3G pitch should contact AFC Sudbury on 01787 376213.

Captain’s Day Report Stoke by Nayland Club Captain Julian Lamb celebrated his Captain’s Day with an early breakfast for a hundred players who then started the competition with a shotgun start on the Gainsborough course. The Captain had devised a format made up of three six hole sections, interesting pin positions and double point holes. It was an expensive day for Roger Toone who scored his first hole in one on the tricky 9th hole. Graham Vandervord, The competition was won by Graham Eileen Hands, John Walker Vandervord and John Walker with 66 points and their prizes were presented by the Lady Captain, Eileen Hands.

Newton Green back on Hambro Trail Newton Green has taken the first step forward in attempting to retain the Suffolk Hambro Cup, which they won for the first time in more than 40 years last summer. After a first round bye in the county’s top handicap team event, they have defeated a strong Ipswich Rushmere team by five holes in a difficult, windblown, second round encounter at Newton. They now entertain Ipswich in the quarter finals on July 19. It will be a repeat of last year’s famous win when Newton demolished the highly-fancied Purdis Heath club in the final at Woodbridge. The experienced Russell Oakey and junior Harvey Watts were the linchpins of the home club’s success against the leading Rushmere pairing of M Buck and J Wright. Oakey and the 15-year-old Watts were three up after the morning 18 holes, and repeated the dose in the afternoon in an impressive display which saw the visiting duo suffer their first 36 defeat for more than six years. Another junior, Jed Seeley, and club champion Greg Hills scored a similar three-up win in the morning against K Eagle and P Robinson, but an all-square and a reverse in the other two matches meant the home team was four up at lunch. Rushmere fought back in the afternoon session, but Newton still managed to be one up overall across the four matches, contributing to a fivehole victory. Results: Morning: R Oakey and H Watts three up to M Buck and J Wright, C Talbot and Bob Talbot all square with B Tawell and P Howard, S Bearman and M Polley two down to I Pope and G Goldmith, J Seeley and G Hills three up to K Eagle and P Robinson. Afternoon: Oakey and Watts three up to Buck and Wright, C and R Talbot all square with Tawell and Howard, Bearman and Polley one down to Pope and Goldsmith, Seeley and Hills one down to Eagle and Robinson.

Lady Captain’s Day 2015 at Stoke by Nayland Thursday, 9th July saw a beautiful sunny and warm day welcome Stoke-byNayland’s Lady Captain, Eileen Hands, to her Lady Captain’s day. Over forty ladies played in the golf competition which was split into three sets of six holes, six holes of 4BBB, six aggregate stableford and six greensomes. Lady Captain, Eileen Hands, together with her husband Alan stationed themselves at the halfway house where Eileen provided a selection of home made cakes, sausage rolls and very welcome pimms heavily laced with bite sized pieces of fruit. More than sixty ladies, along with a few gentlemen including club captain Julian Lamb, sat down to enjoy their meal following the ladies golf competition. It was wonderful to be joined for the meal by several past lady golfers who still enjoy the very active social side of the ladies golf section but are no longer able to play. During her speech before the prize giving Eileen thanked many people for making her day one to remember with special thanks going to vice captain Betty Cox for her organisation of the day. Eileen’s theme was butterflies, as reflected in the dressing of the golf buggy and colours pink and mauve, reflected in the ladies golfing clothes. Overall winners of the golf competition were Carol Mehrer and Barbara Jones who finished with an impressive score of 57 points over the whole three sections of the game.
