TRISudburys 2017 Triathlon

TRISudbury who won the East Region Club of the year in 2016 and held Sudbury’s first ever Triathlon in the same year have set the date for a second Sudbury Triathlon in 2017.

Last year the Triathlon was a fantastic success with 106 competitors, volunteers and officials thoroughly enjoying the day which took place in June 2016 with perfect weather for the race. TRISudbury are working hard to put Sudbury on the Triathlon map with the date set for 18th June 2017 at Great Cornard Sports Centre. The Triathlon, like the club is open to novices and more experienced triathletes looking to add an event to their calendar.

The event is held at the Great Cornard Sports Centre outdoor pool followed by a cycle and run around the local area. Competitors can enter as a relay team of 3 or as individuals. The distances are 250m pool swim, 21.5km cycle finished with a 5km run. All finishers will receive a medal and T-Shirt to remember the fantastic day with age group and individual winners receiving trophies.

Relay team entries are £60 for BTF Members and £65 for non-BTF Members.

The team are looking for volunteers for the day, no experience necessary but a great cheer and encouragement for all competitors is essential!

The Big Band Sound coming to Sudbury in June

“Dance With Us” in association with The Delphi Tea Dance are bringing “Swing Machine” a 17 piece big band who play at venues across East Anglia to The Delphi Centre Sudbury to play at our Mid-Summer Big Band Dance on Saturday 24th June 2017, commencing at 7.30pm. With their 1930’s, 1940’s & 1950’s sound for Swing, Ballroom and Latin music this is a night not to be missed. The Delphi Centre has been through difficult times over the last few years, but with interest in all forms of dancing becoming popular again especially all things vintage, a number of events are being organised by different groups. The Swing Machine will play classics from Glenn Miller, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Ted Heath and songs from Frank Sinatra and other big names. The dancing will be great on the Delphi’s large sprung dance floor.

The 24th June is also Armed Forces Day so to have this great band playing the tunes and songs of the 1940’s era will be very appropriate.

This is a charity event for UPBEAT – Heart Support in West Suffolk, they do a fantastic job supporting patients who have had major heart surgery. They receive no major funding and rely on donations and fund raising events. There will be a licenced bar at competitive prices, and you may bring your own nibbles. The dance will be themed to the 1940’s which we hope many dancers will come dressed to the era. A fund raising raffle and other prizes will be won on the night. Swing, ballroom whatever you love, it's all good exercise just about any dance style can raise your heart rate, burn calories and tone muscles. It will make you feel good so come along to this fantastic midsummer event. Order your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

These days there are a number of ways that you can make a will, but a report aimed at assessing the quality of wills drafted for customers shows that you can’t beat the service provided by a solicitor.

The three main ways of making a will are: Have your local solicitor advise you and draft it on your behalf Approach a will writing company to write your will Write your own will, either online or using a postal service Wills written by solicitors are better quality: Of most significance was the report’s finding that wills written by a firm of solicitors are of better quality than those provided by will writing companies and DIY will service providers. Wills provided through a DIY service were found to be of poorest quality with such wills being most likely to be invalid and least likely to actually provide for what the customer wanted. In some cases they were found to be detrimental to the customer to the extent that the customer’s assets may not be distributed as they wish when they eventually pass away.

DIY wills services do not ask for important details: The report discovered that many DIY will customers are not being prompted to consider the fundamental issues and aspects of their personal circumstances that should form the very foundations of their will. This can lead to important issues not being addressed and dealt with properly.

Non-solicitors are more likely to charge above what was originally quoted: Customers of will writers were also more likely to report they were charged more than the price originally quoted to them. This is partly due to will writers charging for extra services, such as lifetime will storage, that solicitors include as standard within their price.

Customers of will writing companies feel pressured: The report found that customers of will writing companies (as opposed to solicitors) were far more likely to feel pressured into purchasing additional services along with their will. The report also found that of the will writing companies it surveyed, 25% paid its advisors commission for selling additional services. This is a practice not undertaken or condoned by Holmes & Hills.

Solicitors offer more opportunities to ask questions and get advice: The report found that customers using solicitors to make their will were most likely to feel they had sufficient opportunities to ask questions regarding what was involved and what the implications were of what was being included within their will.

Sudbury Choral Society’s 70th Anniversary Concert

Sunday 9th April sees the Sudbury Choral Society embark on one of the classic works of the choral repertoire, Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”. This evocative piece traces the biblical journey of Elijah as he leads his people out of captivity in Egypt to freedom as told in the book of Exodus.

The Society gave their first concert in January 1947 and for their 70th anniversary they decided to tackle one the best known and loved oratorios.

They are supported by a specially invited orchestra made up mainly from local players. Normally local choral societies don’t tackle the large scale choral works such as Elijah as they need over 100 singers to be heard over the large scale orchestral accompaniment required but the choir’s musical director David Butcher has sourced a reduced orchestra version which cuts down the large numbers of wind and brass players required in the original version.

Sudbury Choral Society are always keen to support young soloists just starting out on their musical careers and in this concert we will have four young soloists who are currently studying on the post graduate course at the Royal College of Music, one of the best music conservatoires in the world.

The society is also keen to keep the cost of their concerts down to a reasonable £10 for adults with 11 – 18’s tickets costing £5 and under 11’s getting in for free. They achieve this by raising money through other events; in particular through contacts with the Tony Halsted Horn Ensemble they are promoting a concert on Sunday the 23rd July at 3 pm this year which features some of the best French Horn players in the country.

“Get into Golf” at Stoke by Nayland Golf Open Weekend 8th/9th April!

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club has launched a new initiative this year to encourage aspiring golfers of any age to get into the game of golf - and to ensure that they’ll have fun whilst they learn!

The aim is to encourage anyone to join in at any level of the golf “escalator” that suits them, and then progress upwards at their own pace, to get even more enjoyment both from the game itself, and from being part of a club. Offering the finest coaching facilities in the area – which include a 20 bay covered driving range, which is a Regional Performance Centre for England Golf, extensive short game practice areas, and two championship golf courses – as well as four highly qualified professional coaches, Stoke by Nayland provides the best possible environment and opportunities for Getting into Golf.

James Cartlidge writes Whilst other parts of the Budget hogged the headlines, I suspect that the item announced by the Chancellor that will have the more lasting impact is ‘Tlevels’. These are new technical qualifications which seek to address our long standing failure to be as productive as other countries. In short, comparable nations are generally able to produce more national wealth for each person in work. That means in practical terms not only that we have to work longer hours for the same standard of living, but it means that we lag behind many European nations in income per head – we are poorer, comparatively speaking.

In 2015, for every comparable hour worked in Germany, the UK produced 37% less output. Of course, there is much to be proud of in our economic performance of late – record low unemployment; low inflation and a growing economy – and we have historic advantages like our language and respected legal system. Nevertheless, most experts recognise that our historic underperformance in productivity is linked to a weaker skills base, even if we have leading universities in the more academic fields. Put simply, technical education in our country has failed to result in enough young adults with firstrate skills, and any plan to tackle the productivity deficit must establish a system of education that rectifies this. As such, I welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement of a new ‘T-level’ system.

Where the route from GCSE to A-level to University is both well-established and well-regarded, the same is not currently true for technical education. The Budget seeks to put these new courses on an equal footing with the traditional academic route by increasing the number of hours that students train by 50% and simplifying the current 13,000 possible qualifications to just 15. An additional £500m of extra funding has been allocated to pay for this new system.

When I meet local businesses in South Suffolk they often cite recruiting staff with the right skills as their toughest challenge, and it could be even harder after Brexit. Improving technical education can boost our prosperity and strengthen our nation as it leaves the EU.

Sudbury Mayor’s Report My year as Mayor is nearly over, it has been such a privilege to serve the town that I love so much and to meet so many interesting people. I just wish that I could do more for the town. One of my great concerns is the ever increasing volume of heavy traffic rumbling through our narrow streets that are lined with so many beautiful buildings. I wish that we could restrict the really huge lorries using our narrow roads as a short cut by following their satellite navigation. I have stood opposite St Gregory’s Church waiting to cross the road and being amazed at some of the enormous vehicles using this route. They are most probably not even delivering in the town! The recent news about the Sudbury bypass is encouraging, so I hope that those concerned will do their best to actually get on with it. I know our MP James Cartlidge has and will continue to do everything in his power to ensure that it is built, hopefully before I pop my socks.

Thanks to all those who have taken the “Love Sudbury” on board , it is working so well. I was delighted to meet with Sarah Titford and see the amazing transformation in the footpath leading from Friars Street. Sarah said that now the path is respected and littering had ceased. So it is not only loving our town but respecting and caring for every street, footpath and public area. We have sufficient bins, however if anyone reading this knows of an area that needs a bin please contact the Town Council.

On Tuesday 14th March in The Mayor’s Parlour a very special presentation from the Norwegian Government was made to Tom Welsh a veteran of the 1st Airborne Division by the Defence Attaché John Olson. Tom was involved in the repatriation of Norway. The British Legion had organised and arranged the whole event and members were there to support him. It was an extremely moving ceremony attended Tom’s family and friends. Tom had remembered so many details from all those years ago, it was indeed a very special ceremony that I felt privileged and honoured to be involved in.

I must mention the 2017 Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts. This festival that was previously known as The Clare Festival has been running for 95 years. I was invited

by Mary Davies the Chairman to attend all the events. The final event was a The Festival Concert held at the Ormiston Academy it included performances from the Music, Speech and Dance Sections. It was a joy to see some extremely talented young performers and to present the Cups. I am sure that quite a few of the performers will go on to make a career in their choice of entertainment. The compere of the Concert was the talented Darrel Barnard-Jones a previous Head Boy of Ormiston. I had been so impressed by Darrell on previous occasions especially his acting.

He has the ability to hold an audience in the palm of his hand a young man who will most certainly find success in the field of entertainment.

The Royal British Legion Sudbury & District Branch

I would like to thank the people of Sudbury and District for their most generous donations to our Poppy Collectors over Remembrancetide together with all the local Supermarkets for allowing Collectors onto their premises and to the Shops for having a Poppy Box for customers to donate for their Poppy. The total collected and donated to date is ÂŁ45,926.63 and there are some more fundraising events running up to 30th September which is the year end date.

This is the highest amount Sudbury and District Branch has ever collected and which would not have been achieved without your generosity. My thanks too to all Collectors and Helpers for the Appeal. Thank you.

January started with the Poppy Awards night which again was well attended and to which we welcomed our Suffolk County President to present all the Awards. As well as all the regular Collectors we welcomed the youth sections being the Gt Cornard Scouts and the 2nd Sudbury Guide Unit who received 5 Year Certificates for Collecting for the Appeal.

The Ormiston Sudbury Academy Students and Army Cadet Force were given Certificates of Appreciation marking their efforts for the Appeal again this last year. Four local Businesses were awarded Certificates of Appreciation for the constant donations in their All Year Round collecting Box raising money throughout the year. We are always looking for more distribution of Static Boxes so please make contact with me as at the bottom of this Report if you could have one on your premises.

On the 14th March Tom Welsh a Branch Committee Member was presented with the Norwegian Governments Commemorative Medal for his service in helping to restore Norway’s freedom during the Second World War by the Norwegian Defence Attache to the United Kingdom and Ireland Col. John Andreas Olsen. Congratulations Tom. The June 12th meeting is an Open night when non-members are welcome.

The Speaker for the Meeting is Robert Burridge giving a talk on the Sinking of the Titanic. Why not join us in the Snooker Club North Street Sudbury 7.00pm for 7.30pm start. Light Refreshments will be served after the Talk.

Armed Forces Day will be held on the Market Hill Sudbury on Saturday 24th June. A short Parade of Veterans from the bottom of the Market Hill will be met at the Town Hall by the Mayor and Rev. Canon Cheryl Collins together with Branch members and the public. A short Service will then be held which will be followed with coffee and tea in the Town Hall. Please support our Veterans.

Tuesday 4th July is American Independence Day when there will be a short Service of Remembrance at the American Memorial outside St Gregory’s Church starting at 9.00 a.m. All welcome.

Saturday 1st July Great Cornard hold their annual Fete and our Gazebo will be present there and also on Saturday 8th July members will hold their B.B.Q. event at the Cornard Lock starting at 3.00 p.m. and this will be a ticket only BBQ. Sunday 23rd July members will attend the Party in the Park event with the Gazebo and Poppy items at both. We expect to have the 1917 – 2017 Poppy Pins together with Membership and Welfare details available. Please give us a look and say Hello.

Saturday August 12th The Poppy Race Day will be held at Newmarket Race Course. This event is organised by our Poppy Appeal team in Head Office and is a very exciting day which includes a large Parade of Standards along the Course. Tickets can be purchased on the Day at the Box Office or before the Day contact Stuart Hume for details of reduced admission prices.

Lunchtime Concerts 2017 in St Peter’s Sudbury

This will be the 4th year of the free Tuesday Lunchtime Concerts in St Peter’s and we will begin this year with a Special Guest performance on Tuesday April 11th between 12.30 - 1.30 pm approx. This will be a recital by baritone Mark Saberton, accompanied by pianist Joe Richardson. Mark grew up in the area, and still teaches near Sudbury, but spends most of his working life singing with Opera companies all over the British Isles. Currently Mark is on tour with Swansea City Opera, in Lakme by Delibes. The show comes to the Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich on May 7th. We are delighted that Mark and Joe could find time to open our new season. All performances are given free, and are free to everyone. Tea and coffee is also free. Of course, if visitors can and want to make donations to the Regeneration Project they are very welcome to do so.

Something for everyone at the St George’s Celebration Weekend in Sudbury April 22 and 23, 2017

The life-size St George and the dragon made their first appearance at Sudbury on Show at the beginning of March, and a number of children and adults were photographed.

George has continued to appear around the town since then, including a visit to Tesco who have added their name to the list of willing sponsors, alongside Waitrose. Both supermarkets are giving generously to support the event. St George will be appearing at numerous locations, on street signs and banners, to promote the 23 April celebrations.

On April 22 there is a Charity Roadshow offering free Workshops and Volunteer Awards Ceremony at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury; among the most popular workshops are the sessions offering Ten Top Tips on Writing Good Funding Applications, Recruiting and Managing Volunteers, Marketing and Publicity and Managing a Group’s Finances.

Winners of the Volunteer Awards will be announced at a ceremony at 4.00 p.m. on April 22, in the Quay Theatre auditorium. This is a ticket only event and invited guests be welcomed with tea and cakes, before joining the Shewill is less tnominees to find out who has been chosen to receive awards under the different categories. Three finalists will be chosen for each award and the Shewith is less winners presented a shield, with runners up receiving certificates. The tcategories are: Young Volunteer (under 18), Young Volunteer (18-24), Long Service Volunteer, Older Volunteer (over 65), Starting a Voluntary Organisation in the last 5 years, Sports Volunteer of the Year, Arts Volunteer of the Year, Horticultural or Environmental Volunteer of the Year, Community Volunteer of the Year and Charity Volunteer.

Stalls at the St George's Day Country Fair at Sudbury Cricket Ground, on Sunday April 23, will be many and varied - all from the voluntary and community sector. The usual bottle, cake, tombola, raffle, plants, bric-a-brac stalls will be supplemented by a range of games, including Splat the Rat, Critter in a cage, Play your Cards Right, Find the Dragon’s Treasure. At their suggestion, the Friendship Dancers are also taking part in a very full programme of entertainment and hope to encourage visitors to join them in some Eastern European dances in the arena. With Punch and Judy, a magic show, circus skills, balloon modelling, face painting, the award-winning Gymnastics Team from Pot Kiln School, Sudbury Phoenix Community Marchers, and Ben the Busker, there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy.

Alongside all of this, each recreational organisation in Quay Lane will be I must find that offering taster sessions, including rowing, canoeing, tennis, bowls, cricket and bhockey and a ‘Beat the Street’ competition will also take place.

Before the closing date on 31 March, numerous entries were received for the I must find that children’s competitions of poetry, short stories, paintings, drawings and bsculpture and the winners will be announced on the day, with gold, silver and bronze prizes being awarded. The children’s fancy dress parade will be open to any age, but contestants need to follow the theme of St George and the Dragon; every entrant will receive a small gift.

There will be all day catering from the Cricket Club who are offering a BBQ as well as tea, coffee and cakes, alongside stronger beverages from their bar.

To avoid parking congestion in Quay Lane, a free Park and Ride scheme will operate from the Delphi main car park in Newton Road, Sudbury, every 30 minutes from 9.30 a.m. with the last bus leaving Quay Lane at 4.00 p.m.

This promises to be an exciting day out for the whole family: all we need now is beautiful weather to ensure everyone has a great time!

Preparations for the 178th Hadleigh Show are well underway so put Saturday 20th May in your diary and join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park.

This year we will be welcoming The Devils’ Horsemen with their Cossack Trick Riding Display to the Showground.

Other ringside entertainment includes The Sheep Show, the Young Farmers Tug-O-War, Sky Birds of Prey falconry displays, The Dog & Duck Show, Dog Agility by TAG and a farm machinery parade. With over 160 trade stands there is lots to see and do for all the family. This year we are pleased to be supporting The Hadleigh Festival of Gardening & Art and Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance.

So her up beyond the blessed Hadrian’s Wall is yet again throwing her dummy out of the pram. Despite promising to abide by the result of a previous poll the dwarfish Jimmy Crankie wishes, yet again, to allow a vote for Scottish independence. Now I appreciate that that “nations” abject surrender at Twickenham was not particularly edifying for our kilt clad neighbours but hey, it’s only a game. Should independence be gained all well and good. We have enough misguided egotistical crooks of our own in Westminster’s reptile house without the sixty plus nationalists who, not liking us anyway, seek to govern this realm of ours.

This would hasten the demise of the dreaded annual Burn’s nights. What ever possesses a true Englishman to attend such a mournful spectacle is beyond me. Kilts are donned by those with no Scottish connections whatsoever (the tartan being a late Victorian invention of no particular significance), and vile food with the waste of good whisky (invented by the Irish anyway) poured over disgusting offal. An incomprehensible address to a plate of the affront to cuisine and then the strangling of a cat thrown over the shoulder of some hairy specimen of that race. God save us. The cure, a quiet fireside, a volume of Kipling’s verse and a glass of fine Burgundy, and time to reflect upon the tolerance of the English.

That ungrateful colony have much in common with the other bankrupt European state, Greece. Their national guard wear kilts (although somewhat more girly than the Celtic version), butcher bagpipes and can’t play rugby!

One is not sufficiently acquainted with their dentistry and addiction to the picturesque art of tattooing to comment.

I note that Barry Ellis, chairman of the Suffolk Bench, is rightly urging suitable citizens to serve as Magistrates. I find it ironic that some years ago I did so apply only to find those in charge to be completely obstructive. The local board, at one time consisting of local business men and women and other local worthies, was becoming over reliant upon those from the public sector whose absences from work would be compensated by still being paid by us, the ratepayer. At first my application was welcomed. I explained that being self employed I would be entirely self funding and no drain upon the taxpayer.

It was felt, that as an experienced licensee, I would possess the life skills required.

Therefore the forms duly arrived. To my amazement the first question was “Are you a Freemason?” I strongly objected to this. Not are you a member of the Orange Order, the IRA or Al Qaida. I phoned Bury court asking if one had an obligation to answer. No surprise then when I was contacted and politely informed that unfortunately my application would not be further progressed as they were seeking candidates from different ethical and cultural backgrounds and therefore I didn’t meet their criteria.

To be fair, since the intervention of the European Courts such a discriminatory question can longer be asked, but surely the candidate’s racial or social background should not be a factor.

I note that not only will St. Gregory’s Prince Street Hall be demolished but also that the United Reform Church Hall (with its excellent facilities) will be closed. This follows the closure of the Conservative Club and our own Town Hall as a meeting venue. With Bel Vue now closed and the Delphi Centre under threat the options are extremely limited. Over to you Councillors!

Finally when on earth are our local authorities going to start to address the ongoing problems that our town faces. The Sandy Lane disposal site for one.

Surely it is not beyond the councillors to show some common sense. Build a new waste disposal facility near an industrial area financed by permitting desperately needed housing on or adjacent to the present Sandy Lane site; simple! Essex CC has recently resurfaced all the nearby rural roads under their remit whilst in Suffolk not a single pot hole filled. I am informed by a local contractor that but a few years ago he would send out an open truck, filled with aggregate, and two men could fix a road in a day, the problem solved. Now a separate job order and survey is required for every hole whilst bureaucracy and misuse of public funds rules. The same public sector managers should work at some time in the private sector, but that would put their excessively funded pensions and early retirement plans in doubt!

We had many visitors to our stand at Sudbury on Show and we hope that this will inspire more of you to come along and see what we do. If you are interested in becoming a member why not come along to one of our Monday lunchtime meetings to see what we are like – 12.30 at the Mill Hotel, Sudbury.

As ever Crucial Crew was a busy time and I hope you let you have more details next month. Also next time I hope to be able to reveal some exciting news to do with our work with young people and schools. Watch this space! We continue this year to offer opportunities to primary school children to learn about and enjoy the natural environment and we are hoping to launch “Rotakids” in one of the local schools soon. Amongst other things, Rotakids gives young children the opportunity to run a club themselves, along Rotary lines based on our motto/byline “Service above self” to learn how to begin engaging with local and international communities.

Rotary’s Polio eradication campaign has received much publicity across the country, particularly at this time of year with the flowering of purple crocuses throughout the land; some of you may have seen our displays in Siam Gardens, in Melford Road and at the station.

Sudbury Rotary Club will be having a stand at the St George’s Celebration event being held on 23 April as part of a “Celebrate England” event throughout the weekend. At the same time we will be holding Sudbury Open Gardens, with the proceeds shared between Rotary charities and the Hospice. Look out for local advertising nearer the date or you can buy programmes from our stand at the Cricket Club on the Sunday itself.

By the time you read this we hope to have organised a street collection to send funds to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which is aiming to provide immediate aid and avoid delay in supporting those most in need because of the devastating famine in countries in East Africa. In the longer term Rotary nationally is focusing as well on long term community and restoration projects.

Looking ahead, don’t forget the annual Prom Concert, which will be held this year on Saturday May 13th in St Peters, Sudbury featuring the Colchester Army Wives. Tickets will be available from the Tourist Office and on the door.

Concert and cakes at All Saints Church, Little Cornard

Gainsborough Concert Group will be offering songs from the shows and light classical music at a concert at All Saints Church, Little Cornard, on Sunday April 2 at 3.00 p.m, The accompanist will be Penny Marsden. The concert is being offered free of charge, but donations to the Tony Moore Memorial Bell Fund will be welcomed. Tea and cakes will be available after the concert.

A recent coffee morning held in the Church’s school room raised over £300 from the sale of cakes and a raffle. Another cake stall will be offered by members of the Bell Committee on April 23 at the St George’s Day Country Fair at Sudbury Cricket Club, and a second stall will be selling bric-a-brac and asking visitors to guess the number of marbles in the jar. All proceeds from these events will be added to the fund to restore the bells in this Grade 1 listed Church, where the bells have not been rung full circle in living memory but, with fund-raising events and applications for grants, it is hoped the bells will peal again by 11 November 2018 to commemorate the Armistice of WW1.

Ah Ha! That pesky cat, Ollie, is out and about now Spring is here, leaving me in peace to write this month’s News, starting with an appeal for a new arrival.

Billy, a Jack Russell cross, is a 15 year old gentleman, sadly homeless because his owner died.

After so many years being the one and only, he desperately needs a foster home where he is the sole pet for his remaining years. He’ll give you lots of fuss, take you for lots of lovely walks and let you cook him Cordon Bleu meals, with a few treats on the side to make life interesting.

With over 4,500 people taking part and travelling over 52,000 miles in the six week game last year, Beat the Street have continued to promote and support groups in Sudbury and Great Cornard.

Whether your children would like to join the Dodgeball Club organised by Fresh Sports on a Monday evening in the Stevenson Centre or junior parkrun every Sunday at 9am at Great Cornard Sports Centre or you are interested in joining the new Walking Group at Great Cornard Library every first Wednesday of the month, there is lots going on to keep you active.

“There are health walks already taking place in and around Sudbury, so it is great that we have a new walk in Great Cornard going from the Library and especially as it is a walk which will suit beginners and those wanting to improve their fitness and wellbeing as it is only 30 minutes and all on paths. Hopefully in the future we can add other walks for those who are more active but we rely on a network of volunteers to lead these walks and Beat the Street has encouraged local people to become walk leaders but more are always needed.” said Debbie Maynard, Health Walk Coordinator and Health Walk Trainer for OneLife Suffolk.

Beat the Street has three walks in the Suffolk Walking Festival which is on between the 13 May and 4 June with over 100 walks on offer throughout Suffolk. All walks can be found at www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk.

If you took part in Beat the Street last year, we would like to know of any benefits which it brought to your life; did you meet any new people, do you now stop and talk with people, have your feeling changed about where you live and do you know more about local facilities, parks and open spaces? Beat the Street will also be sending out a survey by the end of March which a chance to win £50 to see if there are any changes to the health and well-being of those who took part.

Beat the Street are also working with Sudbury Town Council and Sudbury Tourist Information Centre to get accreditation to make Sudbury the first Walkers are Welcome town in Suffolk. Walkers are Welcome towns and villages can be found throughout the UK and can be recognised by the logo as a place for visitors and residents to enjoy the outdoors. As part of the application we need to demonstrate local support and would ask everyone to go to https://goo.gl/lQ1PJy to sign up online or visit Sudbury Tourist Information Centre located in the library to find out more.

Woods Around Town is a local environmental group for Sudbury and the surrounding villages dedicated to the creation of new woodland and wildlife habitats and to the maintenance of existing ones.

Formed in 2006 just a small group of volunteers have: • Restored a pond 192 metres in circumference. It is now a home to breeding colonies of Great Crested Newts, Smooth Newt and much more.

• Established a tree nursery with over 200 trees at any one time • Introduced the ‘Seed to Tree’ programme to local schools to get youngsters planting tree seeds.

• Cleared community areas and planted many trees and hedgerows.

• In 2015 we had a fantastic community effort with the planting of a 100m hedgerow alongside open ground at Aubrey Drive to protect the area from vehicular access.

Woods Around Town is often consulted by local councils on environmental projects including the Sudbury area’s first Biodiversity Trail now known as the Gainsborough Trail. We are currently looking to create a new community woodland on an area of unused town council land near the Woodhall Moat. The group are going through the process of establishing the viability of the site and then the development of a Management Plan.

Junior tennis on the rise at Sudbury

Budding sports children are being urged to join Sudbury Tennis Club’s junior division after a highly successful first four years which has seen the number of young people at the club grow from single figures to more than 100.

The club introduced a new junior section in February 2013 offering Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) accredited coaching to tennis tots as young as four years old. “In those first few weeks we had six young players,” said Ronnie Hall, the junior co-ordinator. “Remarkably, of those first six players, three have been taken into the County programme, showing how rewarding it is to start children playing at an early age.”

The LTA scheme is a pathway through different types of balls for different age groups. The youngest from four to eight years old, start playing with soft red balls, using half courts and mini nets. They then progress at aged eight to a slightly harder orange ball, then onto another harder green ball, before playing with hard yellow balls in the full- size game. Last year the club invested in a new synthetic-clay surface at its site on Quay lane in Sudbury. The new playing surface has proven to be a success with both juniors and adult members of the club. Hall explained: “The new courts have been so beneficial for the juniors as the balls bounce lower and at a slower pace than on our previous hard tarmac courts, which gives small people more time to learn better strokes to prepare them for the fast, full-size game. The scheme has been so successful that last season we played two junior boys of 12 and 14 years in our men’s first team.”

At the end of last season, the club introduced a new head coach, Sheetal Pandya, who is moving the programme forward with Matt Perry his assistant coach. Both are LTA level 3 qualified coaches, and are organising coaching for adult members as well as juniors, delivering a super programme for all age groups, especially for people who have never played the game, or are returning after years away from tennis. Hall added: “We have a lovely set up at the club and I am delighted to report that that at the end of last year our junior numbers had increased from those first six kids to over one hundred attending coaching.”

The Ladykillers

Following the success of their last two productions, Sudbury Dramatic Society have begun rehearsals for their next production which is The Ladykillers at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th May at 7.45pm. Classic black comedy The Ladykillers is written by Graham Linehan, author of Father Ted and of The IT Crowd, and based on the original Ealing Comedy. The original production was a huge success in London’s West End. In a house near Kings Cross station a criminal gang take rooms with a sweet little old lady and her diseased parrot. Posing as amateur musicians, they proceed to plot to rob the mail train but they reckon without their determined landlady and, as their plans start coming off the rails, the comedy darkens and the gang begins to disintegrate. The question of who will survive and who will face the music starts to take some unexpected turns.

The Ladykillers is directed by Malcolm Hollister who directed the successful 39 Steps last year and the recent Quay Theatre pantomime Treasure Island.

The teams of two men and one lady played a ‘scramble’ format on the Gainsborough Course, after a shotgun start.

The competition was won by Mandy and Nigel Byham together with Louis Freeman with a terrific score of 56.2. But they only just edged out the team of Suzanne Shaw- Smith, Duncan Smith and Paul Lankester into second place.

There was only 0.3 between the two teams. The prizes were presented by Club Captain Don Wiggins and Ladies Captain Anne Hemmings.

Newton Green Raises ÂŁ6,000 For Charity

Newton Green Golf Club has just completed a year during which more than ÂŁ6,000 was raised for charity. Most of the money - ÂŁ5,934 - was handed over at a recent general meeting to the Kernos Centre, Sudbury, which is a nonprofit making charity providing professional counselling and psychotherapy to children and adults.

An experiment to get more trophy winners to turn up for the club’s annual presentations proved a success at Newton Green Golf Club. A Sunday morning nine-hole friendly encounter involving men’s and mixed competition winners during the year meant an increased turn-out, compared with holding the presentation as part of a winter evening annual meeting.

Retiring men’s captain Lee Prentice and ladies’ captain Sally Cade handed over the awards after a rainsoaked morning’s play, which was followed by a well- attended hot trolley lunch. The pictures feature the mixed and men’s competition winners.
