TESCO VOWS TO FIGHT ON... This was the heading in the EADT after the Planning meeting which refused their application for a supermarket on the Brett Works site. When will they and the Officers at Babergh District Council get the message that the people of Hadleigh will continue to oppose the application? Hadleigh has defeated Tesco at three planning applications and a Secretary of State's Inquiry. These are also defeats for the Babergh Officers who have been trying to push the site for a supermarket long before Tesco appeared on the scene, and still appear to be backing Tesco. Will Tesco appeal? At the time of writing this we do not know, but they can be sure that we, the residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages, will continue to oppose them. If you were at the meeting on the 18th where the decision was made, you were probably as furious as I was at the way the Planning Officer presented the case. Of course it was a little difficult for him as he had just been brought in by Babergh on a short term contract. He introduced himself as having been a barrister and now a planning consultant, living in Hadleigh ‘at the moment’. It was obvious from the errors that he really did not know Hadleigh. However it was equally obvious that our speakers did. Firstly I must congratulate our Hadleigh Babergh Councillors, Mr Grutchfield
and Mr Riley. Though not on the committee, and therefore not eligible to vote, both put forward strong cases for refusing the application. I wish I had written down Mr Riley’s quotation but it went something like ‘The Officer's report was like a very poor first novel’ a work of fiction. Unfortunately I can’t ask Mr Riley for his actual words as he was supposed to go on holiday two days before the meeting, and left to join his family immediately after it. Thanks Brian for your strong support. Councillor Grandon was the only Hadleigh Councillor who was on the committee and could therefore vote. Councillor Grandon proposed that the application was refused and spoke very strongly about it. Councillor Munson was on holiday but fielded a very strong substitute. This time the Hadleigh Town Council, Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, Hadleigh Society and Hands Off Hadleigh worked together. We submitted objections as a united front, and thanks to the generous financial help from residents and friends, we were able to afford a very strong team of professionals to produce reports and speak for us at the meeting. ...Continued on page 3
