Rosa’s Fund: “now help us to spend the money you’ve raised” The organisers of a fund set up in the wake of the death of a three and a half year old Hadleigh girl are calling on local organisations to make New Year’s resolutions to apply for its support in improving musical opportunities for all local children. The Rosa Simon Music Fund has raised nearly £13,500 since June 2014 when Rosa died in a tragic accident as she scootered on the pavement immediately outside her house. Yet the Fund has only receive a few applications in that time - all of them accepted - totalling less than £900. Paul Simon, Rosa’s father explained that “this gap actually says something very special about the community spirit in the town and the surrounding villages. So many people and organisations have hurled themselves into fantastically inspiring fundraising activities, but many seem shy about asking for funding themselves. “But now is the time for local schools, churches, playgroups, registered child minders plus the various choirs in the area to help us responsibly invest the money raised to achieve the aims of Rosa’s Fund”. ...Continued on page 3

Rosa’s Fund: “now help us to spend the money you’ve raised” The main themes for the Fund are: • Buying and giving away percussion instruments – including multicultural sets and outdoor equipment - for younger children to use • Buying orchestral instruments (such as clarinets) to loan to older children who might not otherwise have that opportunity • Funding tuition costs for playing orchestral instruments for older children who might not otherwise have that opportunity • Funding workshops and support for children on the autism spectrum or who have suffered bereavement The Fund also plans to give longer-term support to local musical ensembles by hosting a series of workshops (including for teachers and others) and concerts in Rosa’s name. Nigel Crisp, one of the Fund’s team, said “the amazing generosity of so many has ensured that the Rosa Simon Music Fund is likely to be around for some time, but of course we don’t want to be sitting on lots of money as that won’t realise the Fund’s vision for ensuring every local children has improved access to music”. “Furthermore, because of the Fund’s initial successes, we are now looking at applying for charitable status and setting up its own bank account”. Applications forms for applying to the Fund are available at: http://www.rosasimonmusicfund.co.uk/index.php?option=com_conten t&view=article&id=12&Itemid=127

Pause for Thought

. . . cce e...

Here we are, already into the second month of a New Year. Easter eggs are on the shelves in the Supermarket and summer holidays are being booked. What about those new year resolutions we made, those promises we made to ourselves, to put us more in control of our day to day lifestyle? God has made promises to help us get closer to Him and more able to cope. Throughout the Bible He makes promises about His love and the provisions, protection and guidance that love gives. We celebrated the birth of His Son, Jesus at Christmas. In a few weeks time we will, at Easter, celebrate the death and resurrection of that Son. It is because of that death, if we invite Him into our lives we can be forgiven for our sin and look forward to Eternal Life, and take those promises that God makes. This is when we can remember God's Love and His promises and how precious we are to Him. Jean Chisholm

GSOLICITORS IBBONS A bad hair day for Howard Hello good readers. It has been so cold that I have just returned from dancing with an eskimo. On a previous occasion, I did briefly mention my visits to James Daniel to have my hair coiffed. I am fortunate that at my great age I still have plenty of hair to do something with. I know that it was of great interest so here is a picture of Master Hairdresser James working on tresses of my hair. The colour is natural; with a little styling here and there and a touch of Harmony I am then ready for another week. Before I drop off in my four poster I pop a special preparation on my cheeks to prevent aging and away I go. James takes a great deal of care in cutting men’s hair and can make the most ordinary mop of hair seem extraordinary. Well worth a visit at 20 High Street Tel. 01473 823616. It is nice at the weekend to take in a Sunday lunch. I am a great fan of The Orwell Hotel Hamilton Road Felixstowe IP11 7DX Tel. 01394 285511. Frank of course delivers us but as an owner-driver you may need a parking space and those are in abundance. The Westerfield Dining Room is like something from a grand Edwardian House with enormous chandeliers. The grand piano tinkles away; there is a wide choice, linen table cloths smart waiters and waitresses – just my cup of tea. I have recently had shoulder of lamb which was tenderness itself. There is a sweet trolley, hot desserts and a super cheese board. It is very much removed from these modern brash places that seem so popular with the hoi polloi. It was with sadness that I read in the Daily Telegraph that Nursey of Bungay (who were makers of sheepskin garments for generations) had finally ceased trading. Dellboy’s famous sheepskin coat had been made by Nursey. I had had a super coat made for Brenda, my mother and many other VIPS were customers. It seems such a shame that all of these great names are disappearing. What a grey world we are becoming. With the Spring around the corner you may be thinking of selling or buying a property. It pays to be prepared well in advance. Do contact us so that we can ensure that you marshall the requisite information that will be needed for the transaction. The recent changes in the rates of Stamp Duty Land Tax will mean some savings against the old rates for average house prices in the area. Under the old regime, Stamp Duty Land Tax on a price of £300,000 would have been £9,000 and is now £5,000. If you are thinking of a new Will or as Lasting Power of Attorney, please make an appointment to see me. Howard Gibbons

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 26 (February-March 2015) Who is the man of mystery featured on the front cover? Beryl Allen of Hadleigh contributed this photograph, which had a note on the back indicating it was taken in June 1899 and that the subject is Arthur Taylor. An afternoon on the Internet brought up all sorts of information about his family, his school days, his career in Hadleigh as an auctioneer and his early death. However, not all local history research is done by sitting in front of a computer screen. Members of Hadleigh Local History Workshop have been researching original documents at record offices and archives for eleven years and their recently completed project ‘Made in Hadleigh’ has been looking at the stories behind familiar aspects of the Hadleigh scene. To start, a study entitled ‘The Factory at the end of Duke Street’ has been contributed by Margaret Jeffery. By reading through the Vestry Minute Books for the early 19th century, she found out who built The Factory and that its original purpose was as a weaving school, before it became a silk throwing mill in 1834. Margaret discusses why so many young women and children were employed there and their working conditions. She takes the story to 1869, when the silk mill closed but in issue 27, she will look at later items manufactured at The Factory and will bring the story up to date. You will be familiar with the monthly bulletins compiled by Nigel Crisp and Jeff Ward, which currently appear in Hadleigh Community News, concerning Hadleigh-related events taken from local First World War newspapers. Now, Nigel Crisp tells the story of ‘The Battle of Semer Bridge’, an exercise for the members of the Volunteer Training Corps of Hadleigh and Bildeston. He explains how the VTC came about and which men were allowed to serve. Also, find out what an Innkeeper’s son, an army pensioner, a wheelwright, a plumber, a general labourer and a baker have in common. ‘A Hadleigh lad remembers’ continues with Frederick Holbrow’s schooldays during the late 1920s and early 1930s. His family lived in George Street and his recollections include the nearby shops, coal deliveries by horse-drawn waggons, his father working as a roadman for Hadleigh Urban District Council and collecting groceries at the Co-op Store in High Street for his mother. Barbara Scarff of Hadleigh is to be thanked for the loan of her brother’s memoirs. ‘Who’s been living in Toppesfield Hall part 2’ takes the story from 1769 to the present and includes a portrait of an early 19th century owner from Thetford Museum and a most interesting old photograph of the building taken in the mid-1850s. As a dwelling house, Toppesfield Hall has been home to farmers, solicitors and a children’s author but since 1954 , it has been offices and at one time, there were plans to turn it into a hotel. Recently, the building was converted into two dwellings but, as yet, no one has moved in. Issue 26 ( February-March 2015) is on sale at Keith Avis Newsagent and at Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3. Sue Andrews (01449 740673).

Hadleigh Loyalty Scheme The winner of the January draw is J. Townrow of Hadleigh. It is interesting how many winners of the £50 cheque say how delighted they are as they have never won anything before. Please make sure that you get you cards stamped as it may be your turn next month to win the prize.

It’s February already! And here at Hadleigh Hairloom it’s our First anniversary!! Thanks to the entire Hadleigh community it has been an absolutely amazing year; we’ve settled in to our surroundings, tweeked it here and there, and added to our team as we’ve needed to in order to keep up with the demand for our services. During the last year, we have had the privilege of visits from an enormous amount of well-known and incredibly loyal local people and a very steady stream of new – perhaps new to the area – individuals who have all commented on what a wonderful high street, with such a diversity of businesses we have. Those who have recently discovered our beautiful Suffolk town are completely enthralled by how very accommodating and helpful people are – often commenting that Hadleigh is such an easy place in which to live, or is a breath of fresh air after the madness of large town or city living. And of course many regular patrons of the high street come in from the surrounding villages – but they’re still very much part of the local Hadleigh landscape. Although it’s only been a year, to us it feels like we’ve always been there – now we only get the odd ribbing about needing our feet nailing to the floor! But, once again, we want to thank you, all of you whoever you are, for helping to make our transition to our own premises so smooth and such a wonderful experience. We’re not much of ones for gimmicks – clients just want what works for them. But it is our anniversary month and a little pressie now and then never goes amiss! So for the duration of February, every service will be accompanied by a FREE entry into a prize draw. Prizes – and there are three of them – will be headed up by the latest in straightener technology: the Cloud 9 Touch, which come complete with a heat resistant mat/bag and is gift boxed. The prize winners will be drawn on 1st March. So we’ll look forward to our next chat, possibly a cuppa, and wish everybody – whether you’re new to the area, been bedding in a while, or digging your heels in and refusing to move – the happiest, most contented, prosperous and safest year yet. Best wishes always, Sharron, Julie, Denise, Sarah, Kiera, Mel, The Dachshund 3 (see what I did there!) Hadleigh Hairloom, 78-80 High Street Hadleigh Tel 01473 822191

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 I don’t believe it! Mum says I’m on a diet after too many festive treats so to spread the pain, here is a reminder to all my tubby canine pals out there. A slim waistline means a longer life, less stress on the old knee joints and heart and lots of enjoyable walks without sounding like a puffing dragon. If you like taking pictures of your pets when you are out and about, how about entering the SESAW Photographic Competition on Facebook? Simply join the group then submit up to three photos each month for a chance to feature in the SESAW 2016 Calendar. A public vote will select ten pictures per month to go forward to the grand final in September. You will find a link to the Competition at www.sesaw.co.uk or on the SESAW Facebook page. If you don’t have Facebook or a computer, perhaps you could ask a friend to help you – that’s what I do! Among the animals awaiting homes are Pip and Snoopy who would suit an active retired couple as they like their walks. Pip especially likes a cuddle once he knows you. Like me, Snoopy needs to lose his Christmas bulge. Buster, a big hairy black cat, is now ready for a nice warm adult home after living rough on a industrial estate. Mona, a pretty tabby and white cat, will be much happier when someone ends her long wait for a loving home. Our fundraising events start with Barbara’s Mad March Sale, 7th March in the Parish Room, Stratford St. Mary. Donations of items we can sell or use as raffle prizes may be left with us during our opening hours, Thurs-Sun between 10am and 1pm. HADLEIGH

Lighting Direct News from The Station

New range of Ceramic Table Lamps now in stock

May I start by thanking all the people for the warm welcome I have received since starting in December 2014. From Publicans, Neighbourhood watch coordinators to youth leaders it has been a pleasure meeting you and finding out how Hadleigh ticks! I was brought up in the Babergh area being schooled in Bentley and East Bergholt. Now working again in the area is an absolute pleasure, bringing back fond memories and appreciating through older eyes what a beautiful area we live in. I joined Suffolk Constabulary in 2006 having worked in Agriculture previously. I have for most of my policing career served in Woodbridge and Felixstowe and came to Babergh in January 2014. On New Year’s Eve you may be aware that there was a serious incident reported in Pykenham Way, Hadleigh. At this time specialist trained officers are investigating the incident. As you might appreciate the Police cannot comment on the investigation but I can reassure you that there is no threat to the Public. Local officers have and continue to patrol your area. If you do have any concerns or information please contact me using the email address at the bottom of this article, or alternatively call in at the station. This is a chance for me to request your help! I am investigating with Babergh District Council the number of Vans roaming our streets looking for scrap metal. Some of them are perfectly legal but others are not conforming to Waste carriers regulations. Some individuals are also removing items from premises without permission, in other words, Theft. I am pleased to say some local residents are reporting sightings to us and I am doing my best to speak to them and where applicable obtain statements. What I ask is for you to note down the registration, time, and date, description of occupants if possible and what happened. Then let me know please. Why am I doing this? Firstly, the practice is illegal, if the carrier is not licensed and it takes revenue from those who take the time to register themselves. Some of the incidents amount to theft. Some of the vehicles are being used with incorrect documents and can be mechanically defective. Therefore are illegal and more importantly are dangerous to other road users. Up until recently, Suffolk Constabulary used Police Direct to inform the people of Suffolk about crimes occurring in their local areas. Police Direct has now changed to Police Connect. May I take this opportunity to ask you to sign up. It is completely free and will let you know what is going on in your area. The process is fairly easy, log onto the Suffolk constabulary website and type Police connect into the search field. You can then follow the instructions on screen. Finally, please do contact us either at the Station or by email babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.plice.uk or call 101. Thank you for reading, Pc 1499 Matt Thomas Hadleigh Police Station

Couples starting divorce proceedings in the future may well find that their documents have to be sent to a central issuing centre, which is likely to be in Bury St Edmunds. There has been an outcry from lawyers in London concerned at the prospect of a loss of reputation of the city being the divorce capital of the world. What will this actually mean? Will everyone divorcing have to travel to Bury St Edmunds? In reality, no; very few people getting divorced ever have to go the court, which has traditionally been their local county court. Helen Stuart, The vast majority of divorces are dealt with on paper, Family Partner, where couples agree the formalities and, often with legal advice, resolve their financial arrangements. Gotelee Solicitors These are sent into the court for the court to check and approve. If couples have children, then the starting point is that the courts will not make any order where there is a voluntary arrangement in place. So what if there is disagreement? The purpose of the reforms to the current system is to save money for the Government by rationalising the processing of documents. If there is a dispute about finances or children, then, on receipt of an Application, cases will be heard in a Hearing Centre more local to the parties, in the area where the child is currently living. In Suffolk there are Hearing Centres in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft. Other local centres include Colchester, Norwich and Cambridge It is true that dealing with a straightforward divorce can be undertaken by many with a modest amount of assistance, or even doing it themselves. It is the process of agreeing and putting into place a fair and binding financial arrangement, or assisting in these cases where there is no such agreement, that benefits from an experienced Family lawyer’s involvement. The changes that we will see in the next year recognise that it is those cases where there are disagreements about finances or children which will require a service that is tailored to their situation. For advice on divorce, our team of family lawyers can help. Contact us on 01473 211121 or email info@gotelee.co.uk

Thank You The Hadleigh & District Royal British Legion would like to thank the good people of Hadleigh and surrounding area for very generously supporting this year’s poppy appeal. We are delighted to announce that this year has been a record year for the Branch and for the first time ever, we have surpassed £10,000. The grand total at the time of writing this article is £10,445.53. A special thank also goes out to Mrs Jen Pullen, a military wife and Mr Fred Breyer, a veteran and long time charity collector who both raised more than any other single organisation. Jen raised her money by selling her unique hand knitted poppies (www.facebook.com/PullensPoppies). If anyone in the community is considering taking on a challenge for charity, perhaps a sponsored walk, run or swim, we would be delighted if they would consider supporting the poppy appeal. For more information please contact the local poppy appeal organiser on 07780 975787

Marvellous career opportunity in Hadleigh Dr Derek Dunstone has been providing eye care in Queen Street for 24 years, having taken over the longstanding Rawling’s practice. The practice has developed considerably over the years and offers Optical Coherance Tomography scans as part of the eye examination, as well as up to date spectacle and contact lens provision and refractive surgery advice and aftercare. We are looking for a new member to join our team to assist in the provision and delivery of the highest standard of Optometry services to patients in our ethical and well equipped independent practice. The Practice is expanding with the completion of a third consultation room and continues to grow and welcome many existing and new patients. The new team member will uphold and demonstrate daily the values and beliefs of D J Dunstone by constantly providing our patients with a delightful professional experience. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a friendly team in a ‘brass plate’ optometry practice in the beautiful market town of Hadleigh, South Suffolk. The Practice serves the community Monday to Friday (including Tuesday evenings) and is closed at weekends. Post available: Optical Assistant - providing front of house services to a high level, assisting with dispensing of spectacles and the smooth running of the Practice. Experience in optometry is not essential although a relaxed and easy manner with the public, good written and oral communication skills and excellent organisation are essential. We offer training and the opportunity to develop the career of the successful applicant to perform an important role in community eye care. Practice Team, from left to right: Holly Coleman (Pre-registration Optometrist), Derek Dunstone (Doctor of Optometry), Sally Dunstone (Administrative Manager & Optometric Assistant), Daryl Tabrett (Optometrist), Wendy Thomas (Receptionist) & Michael Giles (Optometrist). Are you interested in joining the team? In the first instance please book a telephone appointment with Sally Dunstone to find out more and discuss the role in strictest confidence. Young Hadleigh! - Have you got ideas to share? Hello, my name is Millie Simon and I am in Year Six at St. Mary’s School in Hadleigh. I believe young people should get involved in a lot more both in and outside the community. The ideas and opinions of young people should be heard throughout Hadleigh, including by those who make the decisions that affect us, because you don’t have to be older to have good ideas! We can be more effective as a community if we all listen to each other’s ideas. I want to get a group of local young people (aged 8-11) together to discuss significant local issues. I think it is important to get young people’s perspectives as well as older people’s views, because what we think matters too and we often aren’t asked for our opinions. I believe it is essential to think about these things from a young age because you have more of an idea of what you might want to do in the future! If you are interested then please contact us on my father's email address: at 4 Canterbury danton89@hotmail.com or send us a letter Gardens, Hadleigh and we will be in touch to keep you updated about you can help contribute how to giving Young Hadleigh! a proper voice. Thank you!

Thinking of fostering …but not sure where to start?

Is something upsetting you? We all think of our food as something which should nourish our bodies. But have you stopped to consider that your food may actually be working against you. Approximately 5% of people have food allergies or an immediate allergic reaction to something they regularly eat. However, it is estimated that more than 40% have a delayed reaction which occurs hours or days after a food is consumed. It is this delay which makes it difficult to determine which foods actually cause problems or even if a particular problem is definitely caused by food. Often, food related problems which could be relieved quite simply are left undiagnosed and go on to cause much more serious health problems. Have you stopped to consider that the following conditions could be caused by something you are eating? • Frequent upset stomach • Bloating • Skin problem • Depression and anxiety • High blood pressure • Regular headaches or migraines • Difficulties in maintaining a healthy weight • Chronic fatigue • Fibromyalgia So what to do? The simplest way to find out what may be upsetting you is to contact me at Bespoke Nutrition, where I can determine the most appropriate test for you, identify the offending foods and work on a personalised eating plan which will eliminate them from your diet. Wills on Wheels Time flies. It’s six years since I set up The Will Business as a home visit service for local clients who didn’t want to go into town and pay more than they needed for a will. When I started the business I cycled to clients’ homes – great if the weather was good! I still use the bike if its fine and there’s not too much on, but we can get really busy these days. The Will Business was designed to help local people who had never made a will (over 60% around the UK). I wanted to encourage them to make a will, at a sensible price. That worked well – I now have nearly 500 clients within those eight cycling-friendly miles from our home in Polstead which I mapped out in my original business plan. We are still writing loads of wills. They are the heart of our business and we know from experience that our clients like them because the wills are personalised, they are easy to understand, and they are inexpensive. Also (maybe I shouldn’t mention this) they work. A major change in our business has been the explosion of interest in Lasting Powers of Attorney (which didn’t even feature in my business plan) We are now writing as many LPAs as wills. These LPAs (the successors to enduring powers of attorney) provide a unique opportunity for people (typically in their 50s or earlier) to register their children or other younger members of their family to act as their attorneys when they eventually find their affairs too hard to manage. There are two types of LPA – one dealing with property and finance, and the other with health and welfare. Because we are so well served locally on the health and welfare front, the majority of my clients go for the property and finance version, which can be invaluable in helping them (once they need to rely on the LPA) to keep abreast of their bank accounts, paying bills, even selling the house. You can make your LPA today, but if you remain in good mental health you may not need to implement it for many years. Importantly, we should register it now with the Public Guardian in Birmingham and once this has been done the LPA’s effectiveness will continue despite any change in your mental capacity. This is a really important facility for everyone. Get it done now, and it will always be in place. I am formally approved by the Public Guardian to act as the certificate provider for registration applications, and this helps to keep the cost affordable. Our fee for dealing with and registering an LPA is £200 per application and the Public Guardian’s fee is £110. There are no further fees. Registration is currently taking around 6 weeks, when the LPA becomes effective. There is no VAT on the fees and there is currently no more cost-effective means locally of making and registering an LPA. Trevor Dodwell, The Will Business Ltd

It’s Winter so don’t forget to STRETCH! Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health. Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance. HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need. CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue. Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained. For more information on the benefits of stretching or treatments and if you would like a personal stretching treatment plan please call Karen Ann on 07772 286106.

This year, 9 February sees the 460th anniversary of the martyrdom of Rowland Taylor on Aldham Common in 1555. To remember his story The Hadleigh Historian Special Edition No.4 contains presentations made by Sue Andrews at St Mary’s church in 2005 as part of the Rowland Taylor Study Day organised to mark the 450th anniversary. The story starts by looking at the townscape of Hadleigh in the mid-16th century and then at its situation as an archiepiscopal peculiar, owing allegiance directly to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who used the parish as a base to infiltrate reformists into the conservative diocese of Norwich. The effects of the Reformation through liturgical changes and their subsequence reflection upon the interior of Hadleigh parish church are also investigated. This is not the tale of a simple parish priest as Rowland Taylor’s biography shows his connection with other reformers. His appointment to Hadleigh was politically motivated and the story of his arrest in Hadleigh church, his imprisonment in London and his martyrdom are told in detail. Also included are the stories of three other men of Hadleigh who fell foul of Bloody Mary’s regime in the mid-1550s. By the end of the 16th century, there were two memorials in Hadleigh to Rowland Taylor, a brass in the parish church and a stone marking the site of his death. Over the centuries, other memorials have been erected and commemorations enacted to keep his memory alive. Recent re-alignment of Hadleigh by-pass at Lady Lane has left the Taylor memorials on Aldham Common rather isolated and difficult to access as there is nowhere to park. If you are going to make a visit, please be very aware of the traffic. All profits from sales of this magazine will be donated towards a restoration project on St Mary’s church. Available at Keith Avis Newsagent and at Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £5. Sue Andrews (01449 740673)

Mozart: a life in letters A Concert on Sunday 11th January by CHROMA United Reformed Church, Hadleigh Many people know and love Mozart’s music but fewer are familiar with his extensive correspondence which reveals his character and times so clearly. Writing to his father in 1777 he says that ‘Count Salern ....certainly knows his Musique because he kept saying Bravo when other gentlemen would take a pinch of snuff – blow their nose, clear their throat – or start a conversation.’ The actor, Edward Max, sonorously read parts of Mozart’s letters to a much more attentive and comfortable audience that might have been the case two hundred and fifty years ago. Between the readings came three of Mozart’s Preludes and Fugues after J.S. Bach; arrangements of Bach’s music for string trio – sparse, sinewy and beautifully played, a foil for the words. In the second part of the programme CHROMA played Mozart’s String Trio in Eb major. The players clearly loved their work; the music ebbed and flowed, rose and fell, glances between them showed a connection which was not just matter of sound alone, and the whole was underpinned by the sensitive but emphatic ‘cello playing of Clare O’Connell. One does not find playing of this quality in a small Suffolk town very often. CHROMA’S next event is a Musical Apéritif for Valentine’s Eve at the URC at 6.00pm on Saturday 14th February.

SKy Watch The colour of stars A casual glance up to the night sky will reveal a multitude of different coloured stars. But why are stars so differently coloured? The colour difference of stars is reliant on several different factors. Firstly, the composition of the stars is a major factor. Although they are all basically comprised of the same atoms, some have trace elements which can alter the wavelengths of the light they emit. Secondly, the surface temperature. This is the most contributory factor. The change in temperature changes the wavelengths of light a star emits. And finally, the distance of the star in relation to the Doppler effect. Stars are formed in vast nebulae, clouds of Hydrogen and Helium, but mostly hydrogen. Other elements are within and the concentrations vary from nebula to nebula. It's like a cake, the ingredients are the same in creating a cake, it's just what you add after that gives you the different types. However, the most important factor is surface temperature. If you view a open flame you will see why. A blue flame is a flame burning at a very high

temperature. A yellow flame has cooler temperatures than a blue flame and a red flame is coolest of them all. This is the truth with stars also. Very hot stars are blue, average temperatures are yellow stars and cool stars are red. Lastly we have the Doppler effect, known also as red or blue shift.Distance can extend or contract light waves. Objects showing "red shift" are objects moving away from us at high velocities, and "blue shift" objects are ones speeding towards us at high velocities. An analogy of the Doppler effect is a police car siren. As the car approaches us the sound gets louder and higher in pitch, this is because the sound waves are travelling at increasingly short distances to reach our ears, by contrast, as the car moves away from us, the pitch of the siren lowers and the volume drops, this is due to the sound waves being stretched, and thus taking longer to reach our ears as distance grows between us and the siren. Classification:Stars are placed into categories as follows Colour Type Surface temperature Green / white W&O 36,000c Blue - hot helium stars B 28,600c White - large hot stars A 10,700c Yellow / white - stars larger and brighter than the sun F 7,500c Yellow - as our sun G 6,000c Orange - cooler stars K 4,800c Orange / Red - old dying stars M 3,400c Red - cool carbon stars N&S 2,500c The largest star known to astronomers? This is a star named VY canis majoris. This is a red hyper giant and has an estimated radius of between 1,800 and 2,100 times the radius of the sun ( which is 432,450 miles in diameter). It lies at a distance from us of 4,900 Light years in the constellation canis majoris. It can be seen with binoculars as a crimson coloured star. The Smallest? That honour goes to the, rather catchy named, OGLE-TR122b, which is a red dwarf, and has a radius compared to our sun (sun =1) of 0:12 solar radii. This equates to being 167,000 km in diameter or just 20% larger than our solar systems largest planet, Jupiter. It is located in the southern constellation Carinae, and so not visible to us, but even if it was in our skies a large telescope would be needed to detect it. Determining the age of a star is quite easy too. The first 3 categories of the table basically live fast - die young. They burn their fuel at a ferocious rate and burn out, or blow out, in supernovae after a couple of billion years. F, G and K type stars live for up to 10 billion years or so,choosing to burn their fuel at a much more slower pace. M and N & S type stars can live for almost for ever. They are practically consuming hardly any of their fuel reserves. And finally I'd like to turn your attention to the chemical element iron, or FE as it's known in the periodic table. It comprises of 5.6% of the Earth's crust and almost all of our core. Because of this, our Earth has a magnetic field known as the Van Allan Belts, which deflect harmful rays from the sun which would otherwise strip our atmosphere away allowing the sun's rays to evaporate all water off the planet and thus killing all known life in an instant. But Iron isn't a natural element to our universe, Iron can only be created when a star explodes in a supernova. Type W @ O and B stars expend their reserves of hydrogen fast. Hydrogen to Helium fusion creates the by-product of light and heat, but once the hydrogen runs out the star burns helium, the by-product of this is other silicates and carbons - now the star is in trouble! The star must keep burning to survive, but converting these silicates and carbons to fuel actually takes more energy, so the star must burn more ferociously, this leads to heavier elements being created, the heaviest being Iron. Once this happens at the core of the star, the star will implode then explode in a fraction of a second - a supernova, millions of tons of Iron will thus be scattered to the universe. All the Iron on Earth was created this way. The Iron core that ensures our lives on a daily basis is the result of a star dying. Until next month, clear skies to all! Any questions please contact me at: neilnorman-72@hotmail.co.uk Happy birthday to my wonderful partner, Zoe, for the 18th Feb hope you have a good day!

Holding the Line as Winter Drags On In this article we remember: Henry Richard Ramplin - 16 February 1915, Albert Edward Toms - 17 February 1915. By February 1915 the British Army had the responsibility of holding a 30 mile Front Line from the village of Zonnebeke on the Ypres Salient in the north and to the French town of Le Bassee in the south. The winter weather had been atrocious with heavy rain, snow, frost and gales and the ground was heavily saturated. Given the horrendous conditions, it took every effort just to survive and hold the Line. The 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment had been on the Western Front since mid-August 1914. In February 1915 they found themselves in the trenches at Vierstaraat, approximately 2 miles to the south west of Ypres. Their work routine consisted of a cycle of 4 days in the forward trenches followed by 4 days back in billets at La Clytte (known today as Klijte). While the four days back in billets offered some respite from the hazards of the front line, it was no rest camp. The days were long and hard and the troops were involved in all manner of working parties. The 2nd Suffolks alternated at the front with the 1st Gordon Highlanders and the change over would have been undercover of darkness in and around the shell damaged village of Vierstraat; the photograph shows the village crossroads with access to the trenches on the left. The following Hadleigh men served with the 2nd Suffolks at this time: Sgt Arthur Abbott, Cpl Charles H Grimwade, and Pte Stanley William Gladwell from Angel St, Pte Arthur Cook of Long Bessels, Pte Bertie Clarke of Duke St, Pte Isaac Everett of Benton St and Sgt-Maj Alfred Stannard and Pte Bernard Beer of Layham. Also at Vierstraat was Pte Harry Branch of Angel St who was serving with the 4th Middlesex regiment. Loss of life happened during the winter, but was much less than in 1914. In February two Hadleigh men were killed; 7707 Private Henry (Harry) Richard Ramplin, the son of Frederick and Eliza Ramplin of 33 New Cut was killed on the 16 Feb 1915 while serving with the 1st Suffolks. Henry was the first of three brothers who would all die during the war. An entry in the 2nd Suffolks war diary dated 17 Feb 1915 states that 8936 Private Albert Edward Toms was killed in action while in the trenches at Vierstraat. The bodies of both soldiers were lost and so men are commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial to the missing in Ypres and on the Hadleigh War Memorial. However, we have not yet established a link between Private Toms and Hadleigh and so are unsure why his name appears on the town’s memorial at all. Our research suggests that Private Toms was born in Norwood Green, London in 1897. His mother Anna Maria came from Beccles in Suffolk and in 1911 he was living with his mother at an ‘eating house’ in East Acton where she was the cook and he was the waiter. We know that he enlisted as a regular in the Suffolks at Ipswich in 1914 and joined the 2nd Suffolks in December that year, which might suggest that Toms and his mother had returned to Suffolk and may have been living / working in the Hadleigh area. In 1920 the Hadleigh War Memorial committee were unsure if his name should be included, but it was, so someone must have made a case. If you have any clues to Albert Edward Toms’ connection with Hadleigh it would be good to hear from you. Still in the area of the Ypres Salient, but slightly further south, the 1st East Lancashire’s and Private Sidney Thorpe, remained at Le Gheer from Christmas through to March and life was reported in the war diary as very quiet with the occasional days of heavy shelling. The same for the 1st Bedfordshire’s and Private George Hynard, for example the Bedford’s war diary entry for 16 Feb 1915 records, “Nothing special. Casualties: 2 killed, & 3 wounded”. Many Hadleigh men served in the military during the Great War particularly when conscription was introduced through the Military Service Act passed in 1916. The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project would like to identify all those Hadleigh men who served, including those who only served at home, maybe in the Labour Corps and for whom medal and other records do not exist. So if you have evidence of your forebear’s home service it would be good to be able to record that information. Contact us via the Project web site; http://www.hadleighww1.com. GREAT WAR NEWS FROM 1914 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 3rd Feb Stories from a Hadleigh soldier serving around Bethune in northern France: when “engaged in reading the names on the cards placed on graves of British soldiers in an enclosed burial ground”, a “French lady and gentleman” brought flowers and asked him to distribute them over the Belgium, British and French graves. He seemed surprised that the couple wished that the flowers were shared rather than just placed on a French grave. A stray dog made friends with the soldier, shared his bed and his food in the trenches. He goes on to tell how one morning he was saddened to find “the poor dog lying dead on the top of the trench … killed by a German shell”. Sun 7th Feb A letter is reported, written by Private Alfred Harriss a scout in the 4th Suffolk territorials serving in the front line trenches to the south-west of Neuve-Chapelle in northern France. Close to Richebourg l’Avoue he reports: “the trenches …. contained two and three feet of water in places with mud galore and men could not stay in them longer than twelve hours at a time…a comrade and I acted as guides to and from the firing line. We consider ourselves very fortunate in not getting hit as the communicating trench was unusable through being filled with water. We took our parties right to the [firing line] trench on the open ground and then dropped them in”. Later Private Harriss moved south and closer to Le Touret and writes: “In the field about us we could see agricultural implements such as ploughs and harrows that had been left, and dead horses and cattle. We counted eight dead horses and cows in one field and seven in another. All were in a decomposed and highly offensive state. At a farm where our reserves were lying, the odour from the dead animals was so great that it was named ‘Dead Cow Farm.’ (This is not the farm by the same name on the Ypres Salient.) Everywhere we looked we could see ruined houses and shattered trees – the awful results of war. When we wanted some more water another young fellow came with me to that ‘Dead Cow Farm’ where we filled our bottles and a gallon stone jar, and returned to make some more tea. I haven’t drunk so much tea before. Then, two others went for some wood. All this was done at night, although there was a bit of moon at the time. Our chief care at night is to avoid the German snipers”. Wed 17th Feb In an article entitled the “Hadleigh Roll of Honour” the newspaper reported that 335 men from the town were at that time serving in various branches of the Army and Navy. This was a significant proportion of a town whose population was given as 3,201. Wed 24th Feb “The Hadleigh Town Band has done well to preserve its existence. Since the war began ten of its members have joined the forces including Mr Basil Ringer (see photo) who has so faithfully discharged the duties of secretary since the formation of the band [in 1912]. He is with the Suffolk Yeomanry.” Wed 24th Feb There were concerns regarding the postal service, “In this town one frequently hears the remark ‘I should like to send my husband, my son or my brother something he badly wants but I cannot afford the postage.’ .. Compare the price of a pound’s weight of soap, candles, etc with the shilling per lb. (5p per 0.454kgms) for postal duty. Surely something might be done to remedy this state of affairs!

At the beginning of the year a new wooden seat was positioned on the pavement by the war memorial to replace the one damaged last year by a vehicle. One of the first factories to be built on the Lady Lane Industrial estate was demolished. As February began work started in Long Bessels at the Threadneedle St. junction to refurbish a house, and build a new property in the garden. The former Partridges Farm shop in the High Street opened as ‘Hadleigh Hairloom.’ During March the reception area at the Health Centre was being remodelled, then the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd. Justin Welby visited St. Mary’s Church and the Porch Project. April saw the sale of the surplus oak pews from St. Mary’s Church and a queue formed before the start. Later in the month there was the ANZAC parade and service in the church. The Alabaster Family held their gathering in the Guildhall. Hadleigh United became champions of the Thurlow Nunn Football League in May, and the inaugural Women’s Cycle Race passed through the town. Sue Angland became the new Mayor of the town. The 175th Hadleigh Show was held in perfect weather at Holbecks. Into June and ‘Mung Bean’ health food shop opened in Maiden Way, but the long established ‘Hicks’ electrical shop closed in the High Street, but just further along ‘The Pedal House’ opened in the former Edwards premises. There was great sadness in the town when three year old Rosa Simon died in a collision with a car in Canterbury Gardens. July, and Daniel Thompson was ordained to become a curate in the Hadleigh Benefice. A plaque was fixed to Magdalen Care Home to record the site of the Hadleigh Bowls Club which had been on the site from 1754 – 2000. For the month of August, commemorations were held on the 4th in the parish church, and at the war memorial to mark the beginning of the First World War. A well known former County Councillor and expert on timber-framed buildings John Bloomfield died. At the end of the month Angel Court (Care UK) in Angel Street closed. For September a vehicle hit ‘Boots the Chemist’ negotiating entry into Pound Lane. During September a heavy rainstorm caused internal damage to ceilings in the Deanery Tower by the ingress of water. The premises of Primo on the industrial estate caught fire at 6am and caused thick black smoke which was seen many miles away and the estate was closed for some hours. Seventy fire-fighters attended. November brought more rains and the River Brett burst its banks. The last month of the year arrived and the Christmas Tree Lights switch-on and entertainment took place in the Market Place. The first batch of new chairs arrived for St. Mary’s Church. The White Hart public house in Bridge Street closed after a difficult year. It was a fine sunny Christmas Day, but Boxing Day was cloudy, however the traditional meet of the Essex & Suffolk Hunt drew a record number of riders, and spectators. Unleaded fuel at the Lady Lane Garage started the year at £1.30.9 p per litre, and at the end of the year its was £1.12.p. A copy of the full report for 2014 has been deposited at the Suffolk Record Office for the benefit of future researchers. Roger Kennell, Hadleigh Recorder

Here at Beaumont our excellent Busy Bear’s Nursery class is an integral part of the school. In the nursery we provide a stimulating learning environment, where the staff work in partnership with the parents to support the child’s developmental needs. We have fantastic facilities with large bright and airy rooms where the children are encouraged to learn through play. The ‘messy’ room having sand, water, painting, playdough, drawing, puzzles, counting objects and many more. The carpeted story room has books, computer, CD player, wooden blocks, train tracks and car mats. Our large garden is well stocked with bats and balls, obstacle course, wooden blocks, tricycles and role play houses. Fortunately, we currently have spaces available in our Nursery. Your child is able to access government funding and start in our Nursery the term after they turn three, the next intake being in April of this year. If you are interested in your child attending our nursery, please contact the school Tel. 01473 825120, to arrange an informal visit where you can meet the nursery teacher and have any of your questions answered. Come and see for yourself!

Panto draws in the crowds in Hadleigh Oh yes it does.... On the 15th 16th and 17th of January the Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) took over St Marys Church for the week and transformed it in to a theatre. The massive stage set up took over the whole front of the church area and showcased 'The Hadleigh Cinderella' Panto. The pantomime was written and directed by myself and it certainly pulled in the crowds. Each performance was a sell out with 150 people at each show. My cast and crew worked really hard as Cinderella (played by Taylor McCarthy) and Buttons (played by Sarah Dawes), tried to get Cinders to the ball, as she was not invited by the Prince who was played by Harry Plank. The story had a twist though and all was not as it seemed. HADS has been overwhelmed by positive comments about the show and also lots of fantastic photos, which we very much appreciated and laughed at! We did hit a few technical glitches with sound, as this was the first time the church had been used for this purpose, and its a big church to fill. We apologise to anyone who couldn't quite hear near the back but promise you next year this will be sorted out. The show could not have gone on without a lot of hard work and determination and so I have a lot of people to thank. First of all - my cast and crew, who most of them, had never acted or sang in public before. They have worked hard since August learning lines, stage directions, singing and also the routines of the show too, so thanks VERY much to all of them. Also I'd like to thank my backstage crew, technical team, tuck shop/front of house helpers and the HADS committee members, who without them there would never have been a show to put on. The show couldn't of happened without the backing of our sponsors. so I'd like to thank Coop, Community Youth Trust, Brian Riley and also the Thrift shop for your kind donation to HADS. Also to the local businesses for displaying our posters, in particular Keith Avis, for selling our tickets. Thanks also to St Marys Church for giving us this opportunity to work with them and the porch project, it shows that the people of Hadleigh want- which is entertainment!. We had have LOTS of help with this show and if I listed everyone it would take up the several pages, but they know who they are. But if you missed this show it is available to buy on dvd which was made by Visions unlimited at the price of ÂŁ10, to buy your copy call Richard on 828474. So what's next for HADS? As you may have read this year is the 'Year of the Sheep' for Hadleigh, so HADS will be involved with some of these upcoming events. My cast, crew and you the public have asked if we are going to do another panto soon? Well talk is already underway about next years show and yes its going to be locally written again so watch this space. Thanks for all your comments and attending our sell out panto, which just shows this is what Hadleigh needs. If you're interested in being a sponsor of HADS or would like to get involved please get in touch with me. For more info about HADS visit our web site www.hads.moonfruit.com or email me at hadleighents@aol.com or call my mobile 07787 158085. Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre February – fill the dyke. Let’s hope that there is not too much rain to inhibit our riding lessons this month. There will however be a couple of indoor events to keep our brains occupied. The first, during the half term holiday, is a Volunteer Management Workshop for all Group Members who would like to be informed and enthused by a specialist from our RDA ‘parent body’. All our helpers have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and expertise by attending either In-House or County Training Days during each year, which are generally found to be most beneficial. The second is the ever popular Quiz Night at Polstead Village Hall on 28th February. They say that fish is good for the brain so a Fish & Chip supper is included in the evening. If you would like to come, give us a ring. Whilst on the subject of fund raising, if you are making marmalade at this time of year and are able to put a couple of jars aside for us to sell on our stall at the Hadleigh Show in May, we would be most grateful. The ponies have been feeling the benefit of a splendid new field shelter in which they can keep out of the wind and wet weather – whilst still eating the grass. What could be better! The purchase of the shelter was made possible by a generous donation from Councillor Gordon Jones from his Suffolk County Council Locality budget, together with an additional donation from AXA Insurance Liabilities Managers – who also came to help us clear the fields of ragwort last summer. Very many thanks to both of these donors and to all of our supporters for your continued help in funding the running of The Centre so that the children and adults with disabilities can endorse the RDA motto “It is what you CAN do that counts”. Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce CIC Extraordinary General Meeting 6pm, Tuesday 10th February 2015, Guildhall, Hadleigh Help define what the Chamber now does. Although we did not, unfortunately, receive enough volunteers to run a full committee and cover all areas of operation, we have received a lot of support and requests for individual projects. We are therefore holding an open meeting on 10th February to explore and decide what the Chamber does going forward and how we finance and resource that work. The first project has been the Loyalty card and, with generous support from Keith Avis Printers the Chamber will be able to continue to run the scheme. But how many other projects can we run to benefit Hadleigh and its businesses? Please come along and have your say, put your ideas forward and, if you can spare just a little bit of time, help us get the Chamber working again. We'll cover the ideas in two separate areas; • Community Projects – covering such things as the Loyalty Card, CCTV for the Industrial Estate, Town Team, promoting tourism • Business Voice – e.g. liaison with Councils and Police and Business Rate review If you can get along to the meeting to help define what the Chamber can do, please let us know by either emailing contact@hadleighchamber.co.uk or complete the form at www.hadleighchamber.co.uk/egm

THE OBSERVER Sorry that the column had to be put on the back burner for a couple of issues. If it is not too late may I wish both of my readers, A Happy and Prosperous New Year. Who ate all the pies? Andrews got the awards but who is really the big achiever in the High Street? David Walmsley drew attention in a previous letters page to the High Street institution that is enshrined in Hadleigh folklore - Partridges. Further research revealed that The Daily Telegraph had sometime earlier conducted a national survey to find the best D.I.Y. store in the United Kingdom, the top two were B+Q and The Range, Partridge's in 15th place who were hot on the heels of Homebase and three places in front of Wickes. I had to press Keth Young to reveal this information, who was so laid back about it that he had forgotten which newspaper had run the survey! Can you imagine the number of D.I.Y. stores that were researched throughout the U.K. I now enter the shop and wait for the attention of these high rollers with a new respect. Howard the humourist Solicitor. Howard wrote again (November issue) of his concern over the interior of St. Mary’s. I am not familiar with all the why’s and wherefore’s but the Dean had to push these changes through as the health of his customers were at stake. Imagine the strain on the beleaguered N.H.S. if a hundred odd parishioners turned up to have the corns removed from their derri'ere due to prolonged contact with the Victorian pews! Hadleigh Jazz Club How often do you find a jazz club that starts with "Sleigh Bells" and a finale of a sing a long to "White Christmas"? A packed main hall in the Town Hall complex clamoured for more and they were not just being polite. Jazz with a Christmas theme was amusingly and dryly compered by the superb resident pianist, Chris Ingham. In the engine room were two stars in Arnie Somogyi (Double bass) and George Double (Drums)driving things along. George is obviously a Buddy Rich disciple as he takes no prisoners with the breakneck style of the maestro. The icing on this Christmas cake were the two guests, Joanna Eden a vocalist of some style, who entered into the spirit of the evening superbly. As did the other guest, Mark Crooks, a clarinettist and saxophonist from the John Wilson Orchestra, (Last night of the Proms fame), Mark was sheer class. Look out for the next gig on 28th February (Digby Fairweather) but hurry as you might miss out. A point to watch As you drive into Magdalen Road from Angel Street beware as you approach the first traffic island, keep as near to the island as you can, otherwise you are likely to bump your front nearside wheel heavily into the dip caused by the location of the road surface drain. There is little that can be done for this to be corrected without it being rather costly - You have been warned!! Cinderella This is just the type of performance the Town Steering Group should have attended en bloc. They would have seen where the Town future lies. I couldn't understand a word of what the cast were saying but all around in the full house everyone was in fits of laughter. Trevor Clarke, HADS and their support must have worked their socks off to put on such a show. From the youngest to the eldest, from performers to support crew all were, “Absolutely Fabulous”. The Observer

Hello one and all. Now you may think this recipe is a bit DIY, but that is so that you can tailor-make it to suit a loved one, friend or family member on Valentine's Day. To show you care. It is based very much on the principal of BASIL. (Buy And Source It Locally) Posh Burgers Ingredients: Decent burgers from Jolly Meat by Sarah Thompson or Andrews, Olive bread or artisan bread/rolls of choice from any local supplier Ripe avocado, Soft cheese - blue cheese works best, Sweet peppers, Fresh ginger, Little Gem lettuce leaves, Olives, Chopped chillies, Wooden skewers (optional) Method Ready made burgers means no mess! Both our local butchers sell burgers that are far tastier than any I have tried, made with lamb or beef. Grill or fry burgers to suit, and set aside. Cut the bread so you have two halves, and lightly toast. Scoop out the avocado, mash, and spread it on the lightly toasted bread. Add crumbled soft cheese, chillies and sliced olives. Place some small lettuce leaves on the bread and put the burger on top. Add sweet peppers and finely chopped ginger. Put the other piece of bread on top and skewer together. (Nice for presentation but not an essential element!). Accompany dish with chips, wedges or potato variety of choice.

Banner Worksheep While some health conscious individuals energetically worked out in the gym at the Leisure Centre there were others working just as hard in another room on a more sedentary activity – sheep making. It was the first of many community workshops designed to create enough ‘woollies’ to fill the High Street with colourful sheep bunting while Hadleigh celebrates the Year of the Sheep 2015. A production line was soon established with pattern makers, tracers, cutters, tackers, assemblers and machinists. All levels of competency were covered and in a light hearted atmosphere the sheep took shape. Although a considerable numbers of animals were produced there was still time for friendly banter, coffee and some fortifying bread pudding to maintain energy levels. Jane Haylock brought her own home-made flock along to stimulate future ideas for 3D sheep, cards, jewellery and toys all with an ovine theme. After a careful head count, Jane Snowdon was pleased to report that over 100 sheep are ready to be attached by their ears to the tough bunting tape. Special thanks to all at the Leisure Centre for their support and help and to the ladies who attended. Why not join us at the next workshop which will be at the same venue on Sunday February 15th from 10.30 to 12.30?

Rotary Needs You Many residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages are probably not aware that the Lions and the Round Table Clubs have had to close due to the lack of members. These two clubs were very community minded and the members gave up their time to help those who were in need by direct assistance or by raising funds to donate to local, national and international good causes. The Hadleigh Rotary Club is still continuing that very charitable work but, unfortunately, is on the same route as the other clubs if it cannot attract new active members. Generally, the perception of the Rotary Organisation is that it is for older men and women and is steeped in rules, regulations and requires an unreasonable commitment. The truth is that Rotary has relaxed many regulations and is a much more relaxed and informal organisation these days. True, the Hadleigh Club's membership is getting on a bit, but that's why it needs younger members who can, in due course, decide on the club's structure, programme, aims, type of meeting and venue. Recently, Rotary has introduced an addition category of membership that enables potential members to gain a ‘taste’ of the Club before actually committing to full membership. This is called an Associate Membership (AM) and would give the AM a way of finding out about The Rotary Organisation as well as the local Club. There is also a great deal of information on the internet. The Club meets every Thursday evening (sometimes at lunch time in the winter) at 7pm for a three course dinner and coffee at 7.30pm. You’ll find us informal, friendly and ready to answer all your questions. Two and sometimes three times a month the Club invites a guest speaker and members’ partners are invited to appropriate talks. A summary of the Club’s speakers appears in “Rotary Review” each month in HCN. There are a number of social events and outings for both members and partners throughout the year as well as fund raising activities. So, if you feel that you would like to make some new friends, enjoy good fellowship and do something to help those less fortunate than yourself, why don't you take a look at Rotary by coming along to a meeting. You can do that by calling either of the following numbers. David Stokes on 01473 82722 or Ian Burne on 01473 822625 We look forward to meeting you. Hadleigh Girl’s Winning designs 2014 was a bumper year for Ophelia Yannaghas from Jordayn Rise, Hadleigh who turned fourteen this month. Fortune for Ophelia kicked off early last year when she clinched the Art Scholarship to Culford Senior School, near Bury. Since then she has been on a roll and created a cornucopia of delightful designs which are now in print and causing quite a stir around East Anglia. “We awarded Ophelia the Art Scholarship because we found all her work so exciting and impressive” enthused Mrs Hunt, Head of Art at Culford School, “but, in truth, it was her iPad illustrations which swung it for her. These are quite exceptional. They manifest a style both unique and delightful and demonstrate a talent way beyond her years”. From an early age, Ophelia harboured a flair for design and drawing which first became evident at Monks Eleigh Primary School. Since then, she has pursued her passion for illustration, doodling whenever possible in her spare time, developing her own unique creative style in 2013 with the help of an iPad. During Christmas last year she began work on ‘The Virginia Delrimple Collection’ which is a series of drawings based on a retired catwalk model, Virginia and her glamorous circle of friends. These designs, known commercially now as ‘Foofster Designs’, really pack a punch as greetings cards and are on sale in over twenty outlets around Essex and Suffolk, prompting requests from retailers to provide a rolling stock and create new designs to order. Jimmy’s Farm at Wherstead are keen to stock her cards this year and have asked her to create some designs of their own animals. Ophelia finds it hard to believe how well ‘Foofster Designs’ have been received. “I can’t believe that people are taking my doodles seriously” she said. “One minute they were doodles, the next they were cards and now they are in the shops. It’s unbelievable.” It’s not surprising that ‘Foofster Designs’ are causing such a sensation and not least because their creator is so young. They are undeniably charismatic little drawings, deft, colourful and effortlessly humorous and all executed with a flick of the finger. Her Dachshund design has proved to be her most popular to date. Like the rest of her characters, these shifty little sausage dogs carry the artist’s hallmark of the sheepish, side-long glance. Ophelia will do any design to order. Please contact Mum on 01473 822360 for further details and do take a peep at some of her prints which will soon be on display at Crabtrees Café, where there will be a lot of shifty eyes waiting to take a peep at you!

Babergh was recently voted one of the UK’s best places to live and most folks would agree. After 25 years living here, at Glemsford and now Hadleigh, that includes me. Yet there’s also much misery on our doorstep. It’s easy to forget or ignore that these are tough times for people who may live just down your road or be standing in front of you in the Post Office. I had a desperate call just before Christmas from a woman concerned about her granddaughter – let’s call her Susan. Aged 20, Susan has learning difficulties and problems with mental health. Her Job Seekers Allowance had been stopped in October resulting in her being homeless. She was now sofasurfing – sleeping each night on the settee in her sibling’s one bedroom flat. Getting help so close to Christmas was impossible. An early appointment was made with a disability rights charity for the New Year. Their help and advice means Susan now receives Income Support. After contacting a housing scheme for homeless young women, I hope Susan will get a place of her own there, close to her grandmother. I led a local legal services charity so understand how vital specialist disability rights work is. It faces huge demands and little local financial support. I work with homeless young people and adults with mental ill health and learning difficulties. I know ‘supported living’ schemes, like the one I hope Susan will soon call home, have growing waiting lists and reduced budgets. It’s good that so many people find Babergh a great place to live but let’s not delude ourselves that comfort and security are available or enjoyed by all. As Ghandi once said, ‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’ People like Susan. We have a choice. We can see people like Susan as the problem, or we can see them as people with problems needing help with solutions. In May we can vote to ignore or forget the desperation and misery amongst us or vote to make security available to all. Hospital transport scheme to be piloted A new transport scheme to allow residents living in and around a Suffolk market town to get to medical appointments at Ipswich hospital is about to be launched. Hadleigh Community Transport will pilot the new travel scheme for a period of six months, starting on Monday, 2 February. The scheme, which will use accessible cars to provide a door to door service for those with no access to other forms of transport, has been launched to cope with the ever increasing demands the group is receiving from people needing transport to attend medical appointments at Ipswich Hospital. Group chairman John Stock, said: “We are receiving a high volume of calls from people needing transport to attend appointments at Ipswich Hospital, so there is a real need for this service. Many local people do not have access to other forms of transport, so are finding it difficult to attend their appointments at Ipswich Hospital, which could have serious consequences, hopefully we can now provide a solution for those people. If the service is well used, as we suspect it will be, we will be looking to make the service permanent following the trial period.” Meanwhile, Hadleigh Community Transport needs to expand its committee and is looking for community minded people to join them. The group offers transport solutions to many local people including the elderly, people with impaired mobility, young people, local voluntary groups and adults with learning disabilities. The services offered by Hadleigh Community Transport allow people to carry out important tasks such as go shopping, pay bills, visit family and friends and to avoid isolation. Anyone wanting to know more about the new hospital service or people interested in joining the group’s committee should contact secretary Joy Moran on 01473 826242 or by email bus@hadleigh.org

Councillors Kathryn Grandon and Brian Riley will be holding their monthly walk in surgery on Saturday 14th February at Hadleigh Library from 11 until noon. You are welcome to drop in or to call 07866 581 556 to discuss your concerns and interest in the well being of our town. Appointments are not necessary.

Kersey Mill Newsletter As the lighter nights approach the gardens and grounds around the mill are having a make-over with new planting and lots of composted mulch on the beds for good measure. It won’t be long before the snowdrops appear, they look absolutely wonderful covering the riverbanks and give us hope that spring is only just round the corner. On the restoration front the work continues on restoring the mill, much of the work on the wheel has been completed with a small amount of repairs still required to the Starts, unfortunately the heavy downpours and high water level through the race and river have delayed things a little. We are currently experiencing difficulties to our efforts due to the back-watering of the river and tail race to the wheel. This occurs and impedes the wheel because the water is struggling to get away due in part to the flow between Kersey Mill and Hadleigh having a large amount of fallen trees which have been damming the river and impeding its flow. The environment agency has informed us this will be cleared shortly. Our main efforts are now being focused on the pit wheel, A very large cast iron wheel that is connected by a shaft to the water wheel, as the waterwheel turns so does the Pitwheel, it then engages with other cogs and pinions providing the drive for the lay shaft and other machinery within the mill. 120 wooden teeth need to be cut and produced from kiln dried oak and fitted individually into the Pitwheel, We would be very pleased to hear from anyone with carpentry skills who may like to be involved.

Run Hadleigh Run! Many people were chosen to participate in the third and final cross country competition. The event took place on Thursday 15th January, and was held at Culford School to select the Suffolk team for the Anglian and All England Championship. All students from Hadleigh High School who participated in the competition, did exceptionally well. These students included: Alex Baxter (7th), Ewan Baxter (22nd), Felix Vardon-Barber (28th), Joel Cooper (43rd), Ellis Girling (45th), Rio Simpson (46th), Harvey Clements (48th), Ben Evans (51st), Rowan Bennett (23rd), Curtis Harvey (51st) and Catlin Fosker (32nd). Alex Baxter and Rowan Bennett stand a very good chance of being selected to represent Suffolk following their impressive performance in the three trial events. Alex Baxter told us: “I am extremely happy and proud; I have worked so hard for this”. Rowan Bennett stated: “It’s good I’ve had the chance to do this. I do fifteen miles per week in training. Despite an arm injury, I still powered through the pain”. All runners showed great determination. Student Union in Action After raising £3,500 from the sponsored walk in September, collectively, as a school, we have decided to spend the money on outdoor leisure equipment. The decision process was aided by the recently established Student Union. The Student Union represents the school and makes sure that students’ voices are heard. Run by previous head pupils, the Student Union consists of roughly 30 pupils and helps the school by listening to what the pupils themselves actually want. They created a survey with a short list of options for each Form Group to fill out. The final result was very clear. The outdoor equipment will allow students outside of clubs to enjoy playing things such as table tennis in their own time. Connie Powell Rugby Trails Hadleigh High School’s very own Connie Powell, Year 10, has been selected for trials at the London and South East Rugby Academy. Connie said, “I am immensely pleased; I’ve trained for this for such a long time.” This is a massive opportunity for Connie and we wish her all the best, as this could be a big step towards pursuing Rugby as a career. Results Day for Year 11 On the 16th of January, the Year 11 students received their mock exam results. The process is valuable for the pupils as it mirrors results day in August, when students go to the hall to receive a print out of all their results. It allows them to consider the importance of the ever-looming GCSEs they will soon take. Before receiving his mock results, Will Simmons told us: “I am looking forward to receiving my mock results as I am keen to see where I need to improve, thus giving me revision guidance and allowing me to be successful in my real exams.” Last year’s GCSE students celebrated with magnificent results, as 69% gained 5 or more passes at A*-C. This set a new record for the school. These results were the product of hard work and persistence, and we are hoping students will achieve this standard again this year. Science Department and Eco Club The Science Department has installed a ‘Power Predictor’ in the grounds of the school. The Power Predictor consists of a Wind Speed Sensor and Solar Sensor mounted on a mast. The data recorded enables us to see what power could be potentially generated if we had our own wind turbine or solar panels at Hadleigh High School. The Eco Club, headed by Imogen Morsman and Charlotte Duffield, are currently 34

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

researching the feasibility of having a wind turbine or solar panels at our school. They are currently looking at factors, such as planning permissions, costs and the huge task of fund raising. We hope that the ‘Power Predictor’ will be a useful part of their campaign. On 9th January 2015 a group of gallant students wondered into the Adastral Park and took part in the ROBO CUP Master class.

Students were introduced to C# coding and were able to learn how to use coding to make a virtual robot to pick up and detect colours whilst avoiding traps. They competed against a lot of schools (around 60 to be exact). Some of our brave robot programmes came third in the Master Class competition and are well on the way to develop great programming skills and coding to compete in the INTERNATIONAL ROBO CUP Competition on 20th March 2015. Conservation Area Please can we say a big thank you to pupils, parents and staff for collecting the Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers. With all the vouchers that were collected we were able to order an Interactive Solitary Beehive and two Nesting Boxes. The photograph on the left shows the large Bee and Bug Biome that was obtained with last year’s Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers. The right hand photograph shows the ‘Bug Hotel’ that pupils helped to make using old bricks and wood. The habitat for wildlife within the Conservation Area will be much enhanced by these additions.

ROWLAND TAYLOR SERVICE OF COMMEMORATION February 8th 2015 3pm, St Mary’s Church Hadleigh On February 9th 1555, Rowland Taylor, Rector of Hadleigh, was burnt at the stake on Aldham Common. Aldham Common was enclosed in 1729 with the income to be used for the ‘poor of Hadleigh’. Today the Aldham Common Charity administers the land and the money raised is distributed in grants. All are welcome at the service.

Hadleigh Evening WI The President Rae Stapleton and members were delighted to welcome Bridget Warnes, Janet Covell and Gill Skipper to the January meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI. On a more sombre note everyone paused for one minute to remember Maraday Robinson and Jackie Horsley who died recently. Both had been loyal members. Maraday arranged outings, undertook the duties of treasurer and entertained members in her beautiful home in Kersey. Jackie ran the raffle for which she generously donated the prizes. She also enjoyed attending county meetings as delegate where she used her shorthand skills to compile full interesting reports to present to our meetings. Graham Higgins a magistrate and justice of the peace gave a fascinating talk entitled “Tales from the Bench” including the history of crime since 1066. In 1605 a Suffolk man was involved in the gunpowder plot. Sitting in both youth and adult courts Graham has seen habitual offenders grow up over the years. Punishments have evolved. Discontinued are hard labour, transportation to Australia or America, hanging and flogging. Nowadays punishments are mainly custodial. Sadly most of the men in prison are comparatively young. Next month’s meeting will be held on 17th February in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh library starting 7.30pm. Glenn Abbassi will talk about her travels as an Anthony Nolan Courier. Visitors and new members are welcome. phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk Tel No 01473 823057

Glenn’s ‘Wild Hogs’ Indian Motorcycle Challenge 2015 For those who don't know me, my name is Glenn Root and have lived in Hadleigh with my wife Elaine for the past 28 years. In late spring 2014 and almost without warning (apart from some cold-like symptoms), I was struck down by a severe lung infection and pneumonia and was referred to consultant at Ipswich hospital for tests, investigations and treatment. The illness kept me off work for over 3 months and my recovery to 100% good health is still on-going. Shortly before Xmas at a get together with old college mates, four of us decided that we would do this motorcycle challenge across the Himalayan foothills in India later on this year in October (I still think we were all probably drunk at the time!). Whilst my three friends are completing this as a personal challenge, I thought I'd take up the option of doing it for charity and decided to raise funds for a charity called "Breathing Matters" which is aligned with lung disease and pneumonia research. My target is to raise atleast £3,500 and would be extremely grateful to receive any donations to this cause. Donations to my JustGiving page is easy - just follow this link, read my story and click Donate: http://www.justgiving.com/owner-email/pleasesponsor/Glenn-Root JustGiving sends your donation straight to Breathing Matters so it’s a quick and safe way to donate. I do hope that you are able to help. Regards and thanks, Glenn Root.

Mark’s at the “Peake” of Recovery! Now is the time when many of us have made that New Year’s resolution to change our lifestyle, get fit and improve our health and wellbeing. For some of us it’s the perfect opportunity, providing the chance to embark upon a new regime that will motivate and inspire us to energise and revive our bodies. We all have choices - but imagine, due to a split second incident, your ability to conduct your life normally changed Mark Tatham with Chris Grimwood, Peake Fitness Manager instantly? That is exactly what happened to Mark Tatham from Polstead. Mark, an Essex University Professor, and an avid bike enthusiast for most of his life, cycled 30 miles per day. An unavoidable accident - a head-on collision with a car on a day in August around ten years ago in Dedham - had a devastating impact. Not only was he rendered unconscious, having literally been hurled over the top of the vehicle onto the road, but the resulting injuries included a severely broken leg and shoulder, and he was considered lucky to have survived. Mark was treated at Colchester hospital, under the surgeon’s care for several weeks. By January, whilst he was able to return to work at Essex University on crutches, the specialists at that stage warned that he may well be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Rather than accepting this likely scenario, Mark and his wife Kate did not admit defeat, and Kate embarked upon a quest to find someone that could help. A conversation with one of the managers at Peake Fitness, based at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, proved very fruitful. Following an initial course of sports injury therapy, Mark was then coaxed into one-to-one sessions, starting with gentle strengthening exercises, and slowly progressing to personal training which eventually included a more general fitness regime. All Mark’s hard work, determination and perseverance has certainly paid off, in that although some weakness prevails (for example, one leg is slightly shorter than the other as a result of the injuries sustained), he is now able to attend the Peake Fitness gym frequently, and even participates in regular “Spinn” classes. Mark has nothing but praise for the management team, and the individual fitness consultants that helped him through this difficult period of his life. Peake Fitness Manager Chris Grimwood had this to say about Mark’s journey thus far, "Mark's determination and dedication to his health and fitness has been an inspiration to many of the team and fellow members here at Peake Fitness for years now. His relentless approach to his fitness goals and his refusal to give up is and always will be a benchmark for many to follow - myself included.” If you are interested in exploring how the team at Peake Fitness can help improve your health and well-being with just a few changes to your daily routine, come along to the Peake Fitness Healthy Heart Open Evening on Thursday 26th February from 7pm to 9pm. This is a free event and we’re offering all attendees the opportunity to join Peake Fitness without having to pay a joining fee (a saving of £150!) on the night. News from St Mary’s Primary School St. Mary’s Primary School – Arts Award Good Practice Centre 2014 - 15 This year is already turning out to be very busy for us at St. Mary’s! Since we were awarded our Good Practice Award we have been inundated with offers of support from the local community and have organised many events this year from photography workshops to theatre trips. Our approach to Arts Award at St. Mary’s is individual to each child. Children are encouraged to find out what inspires them and they are guided to pursue their interests. We have organised for children to visit galleries and museums to further their interest and, most recently, year 5 visited the Ancient House Museum Thetford Life. Here they learnt about what it was like to live during World War 2 and earned their Discover certificate for Arts Award. During our art club we offer the Arts Award Explore qualification to 9-11 year olds. This year’s cohort is already taking part in a range of activities such as 3D modelling, drawing and graffiti. We were also privileged to be able to run a photography workshop for Key Stage 2 for 6 weeks. Ruth from Imaging Partnership taught the children all about framing and capturing the perfect picture. This was a big success and we hope to run another workshop towards the end of the year. “Photography club has inspired me to go on and understand the true meaning of taking pictures. Since we achieved our Arts Award it has made me confident about expressing my feelings through art.” Mille Sands, Arts Award Explore achiever We also offer instrumental tuition which each child can include as part of their portfolio. Children are currently learning a range of instruments at St. Mary’s including violin, flute and guitar. During the autumn term the children in Key Stage 1 earned their Discover certificates through a project called ‘Lullaby’ which was run by the City of London Symphonia. If you would like to be involved with Arts Award in anyway at St. Mary’s Primary School please contact Helen Seed 01473 823268. The children of St Mary's are enjoying Writing Cafés, sharing a session in their classes with adults from their families. We've had mums, dads, aunties, granddads, grandmas... The adults have been hearing all about the technical terms we use in writing and have helped with all sorts of writing challenges and games. Thank you to all the adults who have come into support the children - we look forward to seeing the final writing results on display when they next visit the class. The children have enjoyed having lots of visitors in assembly so far this term. Helen Matter, the Schools’ Adviser from the Diocese, talked to the children about the value ‘peace’ and having a place to go to be peaceful. She asked the children about their peaceful places where they can go to think and have some time on their own. Helen talked about when Jesus was sleeping in a boat during a storm and when he woke he calmed everyone down. As always, Helen brought the story to life and related the school’s values to her own life and family to make it feel real. The children responded really well. “It’s really helpful to know you can go somewhere peaceful but Jesus is always with you.” Molly, Year 6 . “No matter where you are there’s always somewhere quiet to go and think and be peaceful.” Hollie, Year 6 One of our regular visitors is The Very Reverend Martin Thrower. He came in to talk about not ‘judging a book by its cover’, particularly if you are meeting someone new. He brought in a big history book but, when it was opened, all the children were surprised to find the pages blank. Also, children dressed in some of Martin’s clothes from the church. We discussed whether this changed them or meant they were priests. Of course, what matters is how people act and behave and treat others, rather than what we wear. “It was nice to see because it made us think about not judging people. The book was like proof of what Martin was saying. It helped that he was not just saying it but showing it.” Lara, Year 6 We have also been visited by Father Peter Brett, who told the story of St Francis of Assisi, and coaches from Premier Sport and Premier Performing Arts, who encouraged the children to come along to their after school clubs. At St Mary’s, there is a strong emphasis on talking and thinking together. “Worship is an inspiring experience because it gives us a chance to speak in our own words about Christian values.” (Millie, Year 6).

December: This year the Christmas Quiz and Fizz Evening was under new direction but equally fiendish with memories having to scavenge from the long lost past, in fact before some of the members were born (and incidentally it wasn't fizz but a warm spicy drink - another ploy to fog the memories?! It was a fantastic evening of food and fun enjoyed by everyone, even the vocal rendition by one member! The thanks this year go to the committee for the marvellous array of food and John W., Ruth S., and Margaret and Andy for the competition. At this point we would all like to thank Ruth Smith for her hard work as Treasurer and say how sad we are that she and Bob are moving away in the New Year and wish them both the very best in their new abode. It just remains for me to add that if there is a noble soul out there who fancies the Treasurership or even the Secretaries position (as the secretary is prepared to do the treasurers job , but can't do both) - please do come forward. We are all a very friendly crowd and a garden isn't a vital part of it - a couple of pot plants will do! (The committee only meet 3 or 4 times a year.) So please think about it, and come to our aid if you possibly can, we can't continue without a treasurer. January: Surprisingly, on an evening of distinctly seasonal weather, our January meeting was pretty well supported. So thank you dedicated members! It was an evening for airing our garden problems to four committee members who were 'put on the line' to come up with answers and recommendations, so we hope we were a help. The problems aired varied from woolly aphid and natural insect control (squashing in your fingers!!) to the regeneration of aged and /or pot bound plants; the starting of wet bonfire material safely and the Bylaws appertaining thereto and I really mustn't forget the cultivation and correct pruning of raspberries!!! (He knows who he is). It was though a sad evening in some ways as we said goodbye to our wonderful Tresasurer Ruth Smith and husband Bob who will both be sadly missed but we wished them well for their new life in Frinton. As ever the marvellous Secretary Carole who rescued us from obivion has moved sideways to step into Ruth's shoes and handed the 'pen' to Linda. On behalf of us all, thank you both. The next meeting on Feb 9th is to be given by Matt Tanton-Brown on Practical Propogation - the competition is a vase of Hellebores. Ruth Allen 822323

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I was a member of the Panel for the January ‘Any Questions’ session at the Garden Club, and there was one question that I felt we failed to deal with satisfactorily. The question concerned a specimen box bush growing in a pot on which the top leaves were turning yellow. Now ‘Box Blight’ is another of the new diseases that have appeared in the last few years. It is caused by a couple of fungi, and has caused the total removal of box hedges in some well known gardens. For the Panel the problem was that none of us had actually seen it. Research on the internet after the meeting shows that it causes the leaves to turn brown and die, and if it is well developed there may be the fruiting bodies of the fungus which in one case are white, and the the other pink. For the amateur there is no satisfactory treatment. Even Monty Don gave up and cleared his hedges and replanted with something else. In the case of the questioner the leaves were going yellow so the probable cause was exhaustion of the fertilizer in the compost, and possibly poor drainage because of the roots packing the pot. My suggestion which would be applicable to a number of pot grown shrubs would be to tip the plant out of the pot, and use a dibber to loosen and remove some soil from the sides and bottom of the root ball. It can then be repotted in the same or a slightly bigger pot using fresh compost to replace what has been removed. 2015 has been declared the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep. Having just sat down to put my seed order together I thought it might be fun to grow some of the dye plants used to dye cloth in the 1500's. A lot of dyes were probably imported, but woad (blue), weld (yellow), and madder (red) were grown in the UK. So I consulted my catalogues, and found that I had missed the boat. If I wanted to harvest them in 2015, I should have sown them in 2014. I hope the organisers thought ahead further than I did. Soil conditions around Hadleigh are very variable, so when I spotted an internet site that claimed to map soil types for the whole of England. I had to try it. I was amazed to find that it had the change of soil type in the middle of my garden correctly identified. If you want to try it the url is www.landis.org.uk/soilscapes. Weather Records In December at Kersey there was 48.4 mm (1.9") of rain, which is about average for the month. The 3 monthly total at the end of November was 237.4 mm (9.3") which is nearly 60% more than the average figure. December completes the year, and this time the annual total was 677.8 (26.7"). This is very close to our average annual rainfall over the last few years. In December the maximum temperature was 14 Cel (57F) which is warmer than average, and the minimum temperature was -2 Cel (28F) which is about average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 3 Cel (37F). Mid January ground temperature seems to be quite variable, and this is within the normal range. Maybe the grass will stop growing now. Hints The main thing to do in February is to make sure that you are ready for March when the garden really wakes up. So make sure that you have any seeds that you want to sow. If you grow potatoes then Partridges already have theirs in. If you want something a bit more unusual then this years potato day is on 14 February in the morning at Stonham Barns. If the weather permits flower beds can be overhauled, and vegetable beds prepared. It would be good if the various pruning jobs on roses, fruit trees and shrubs could be completed. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs, or plum/damson trees in the Spring. John Rye

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 18th December 2014 Present: Councillors: Angland (Town Mayor), Byrne, Cook, Grutchfield, Haylock, Janas, Lazenby, Matthews, M. Munson, Sheldrick and Whiting. In attendance: Sergeant Gary Milbourne and PC Matt Thomas (Suffolk Constabulary); Councillor Riley, (Suffolk County Councillor/Babergh District Councillor), Councillor Grandon (Babergh District Council) and one member of the press. At the beginning of the meeting a one minute silence was observed for ExCouncillor Miss Ann Stephenson who had passed away on Sunday 14th December 2014. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Amin, Free and L. Munson. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 20th November 2014 were taken as read, were confirmed and signed. POLICING Sergeant Milbourne introduced himself and PC Thomas who is replacing PC Paisley while he is seconded to Sudbury for the next three months. He advised that he will be attending Town Council meetings in the future as there will not be a specific officer allocated to Hadleigh and his attendance will ‘free up’ his staff’s time and ensure continuity. He reported on the forthcoming police cuts and how this would affect policing in Suffolk. Councillors were disappointed with the cuts having to be made, but were in agreement that Hadleigh was a safe place to live in due to the service provided by the Police Force over the years and hoped this would not be affected. PC Thomas presented the Police Reports for November. It was noted that 22 crimes had been recorded with 5 detected. The offences comprised as follows: 11 thefts; 4 criminal damage; 3 assault occasioning ABH; 1 causing an affray; 1 racial/religious aggravated harassment alarm distress; 1 drugs offence and 1 burglary. Questions were raised on the rise in calls from residents regarding metal type thefts and illegal/inconsiderate parking in the High Street. Councillor Grutchfield wished to thank the Police for the issuing of parking tickets to try and alleviate the problems. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written report had been received from Councillor Riley. He had also provided a

report on the care home situation which was available in the office. Councillors raised concerns over the private company now letting the rooms in Angel Court but the Police were able to advise that they had had concerns but had raised them with the Company and had been happy with the response they received in that those renting the rooms will be vetted prior to the letting. Councillor Sheldrick commented that it was better for the taxpayer to have the building used rather than pay for security to guard an empty building. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported: i) Response received from the Chief Constable to the letter sent regarding proposed Police financial cuts ii) Acceptance of nomination from Babergh District Council to add the Corn Exchange, Market Place to the Assets of Community Value The Mayor reported on the events and duties she had carried out during the year. CHRISTMAS EVENT The Mayor provided a verbal report on the Christmas Lighting Up Festival Event held on Sunday 30th November 2014. All those involved were thanked for making the event such a great success and for making the High Street look lovely with the trees again. STANDING ORDER NO. 24 Councillor Cook asked the Town Clerk to make enquiries with the County Council regarding the Town Council’s pension scheme following an article she had read in the Times Newspaper. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £24,450.17 be approved for payment. PLANNING COMMITTEE It was noted that the Planning Committee Meeting of the 4th December 2014 had been cancelled due to a lack of business. Planning Applications that had been received had been dealt with under Officer Delegated Decision. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 11th December 2014 was received and accepted. Including their recommendations to make grants of: i) £1,000 to the Citizens Advice Bureau ii) £500 to Pauline Thrower Counselling iii) £500 to St. Mary’s Church would be paid in April 2015 – this is an annual grant – reviewed annually. CESSATION OF TERM AS COUNCILLOR The Clerk reported that since the Finance & Personnel Committee Meeting held on the 11th December 2014 a letter had been sent to Ian Welsh by Recorded Delivery advising him that as of that date he no longer would be a member of Hadleigh Town Council due to the fact that he had not attended or provided apologies for any meeting since his last attendance in June. The Clerk advised that Babergh District Council had advised that the vacancy should be advertised and that if the council so wished to co-opt the position. It was felt that this should be discussed in more detail by the Finance & Personnel Committee at their next meeting. STANDING ORDERS Councillors were provided with a list of amendments to the Standing Orders. These were agreed unanimously. The addition of the Reporting of Meetings section had been recommended for approval by the Finance & Personnel Committee on Thursday 11th December 2014 this was also agreed unanimously. Councillors would be provided with a revised copy of the Standing Orders at the January meeting. SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL Suffolk County Council had advised that they proposed a diversion of part of public footpath 13 Hadleigh which runs off the A1071. Mr. David Warner, Footpath Warden, had been contacted and was in favour of the new diversion. The Clerk would advise Suffolk County Council that Hadleigh Town Council had no objections to the diversion. COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY Following the meeting held at Babergh District Council offices on the 9th December 2014 the Councillors who had attended this meeting felt that at the present time there was no action required to be taken by Hadleigh Town Council. Councillor Byrne advised that the first five properties of any development would not incur CIL payments. Councillor Grandon advised that this was incorrect but as the information had been provided by a Babergh District Council Officer she would investigate and report back. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.40pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Fidelis Activity News Buon appetito! Thanks to the arrival of Tito’s on the High Street, Lunch Bunchers were able to go Italian without having to leave Hadleigh. Admittedly there was a distinct lack of sun but this was soon forgotten when the delicious meals were served and eaten. Authenticity was not in question as all food was lovingly and freshly prepared by Tito, Italian chef/owner. Tito has had an interest in food and cooking from a very young age and his passion has secured him work in many prestigious restaurants in London and elsewhere. Working alongside the other love of his life, Kirstie, in the beamed setting of number 23, they have created a cosy haven for good food and friendly service. Fidelians were more than happy with their menu choices which ranged from traditional pasta dishes to wafer thin pizzas. More substantial ‘meat/ fish and veg’ dishes were available but desserts were just too tempting. Vegetarian and healthy dessert options are also on the menu. As most of the ladies walked to the restaurant they were able to sample the inhouse wine, responsibly, of course, and still walk home. Banners Galore: Fidelis members will be joining the rush to make enough sheep to decorate the High Street when the town celebrates Hadleigh Year of the Sheep. Several bunting workshops are planned so that another flock will be created to join the growing band of colourful creatures ready to brighten up the town. Jan Devey

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of Wednesday 14 January 2015 were: • Suffolk County Council report Members welcomed the campaign for better mobile phone coverage in Suffolk. • Defibrillators It was suggested that it might be possible to move the redundant phone box in Upper Layham to an area near the entrance to Brett Green, and a defibrillator installed inside; the feasibility of doing so would be explored. • Planning Shepherds Farm, Lower Layham - there were no objections to the application for change of use from agricultural building to dwellinghouse. Partridge Cottage, Lower Layham - there were no objections to the application for the erection of a first floor extension, insertion of 3 dormer windows, 2 chimney flues and the erection of a single-storey side extension. However, Councillors felt that, in order to remain in keeping with the surrounding structures, a brick chimney stack would be more in keeping than a stainless steel flue. • Local History Recorder It was noted that the Chairman had agreed to take on the role of Local History Recorder; his appointment was ratified by the PC. He would compile an annual report highlighting changes in the village and a record of events. • Annual Parish Meeting 2015 This would take place on Wednesday 29 April. The format would be the same as in previous years, but with councillors reporting on their four-year tenure instead of just the previous year. • Annual Spring Clean This would take place on Saturday 7 March. The main road would be the key area to target. As there was a good deal of vegetation encroaching onto the footpath, the Chairman proposed asking SCC to help by providing a skip, lending signage, and clearing up after the rubbish had been removed; he also proposed asking Hadleigh Town Council if they would support the initiative. This proposal was agreed unanimously. Village Spring Clean Please put this in your diary for Saturday 7 March. Every year you are invited to give up a couple of hours to give the village a bit of clean-up before the new Spring growth buries all the rubbish that has accumulated during the winter months. We are usually supported by a couple of dozen people. The more people who come along, the more we can do and the quicker we can do it! Special effort will be put into the main roads that connect Upper and Lower Layham with Hadleigh – adults will be asked to do that. Families can be found quieter places to work. Flourescent jackets, litter pickers and black bags will be provided. It would help if you can bring your own gloves. PLEASE MEET AT 10.00 on the Playing Field. We hope to see you there. St Andrew's - your Parish Church Services during February Sunday 1 10.30 am Morning Worship Sunday 8 9.15 am Sung Eucharist Sunday 15 9.30 am Café Church Sunday 22 9.15 am Family Eucharist Note that ‘Coffee, Cake and Chat’ is planned to re-start in March.

Local History Research There must be one or two people living in Layham who would like to help to research the history of our village. We anticipate setting up small projects that people could get on with in their own time, meeting perhaps four times a year to take stock, share and set new targets. Examples of jobs waiting to be done are: • Making a copy of the Layham Tythe Map showing all the field names; • Transcribing entries from the Overbury Manor Court Rolls; • Combing the newspapers held in photographic form in the Suffolk Record Office for Layham entries; • Developing the collection of photographs of marriages that have taken place in Layham Church – and pairing them up with the entries in the Marriage Register. If you are interested in these topics or something similar, please contact Michael Woods on tel: 823798 or by email: michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net and we can arrange an initial meeting. A small local history project completed last month Janet Blackwell who was born in Layham and lived her early years here has inherited much of her father’s collection of Layham papers, photographs and artefacts. She recently provided an opportunity for a photograph to be taken of a large framed certificate commemorating the 100th birthday of Emily Bennett on 6 May 1922. Emily was one of her forbears. A newspaper report of the time describes how Mrs Bennett held “quite a large reception, on a lovely spring afternoon, in the front garden of the Red Cottage, Upper Street, amidst a glorious array of Spring flowers”. Shown in the photograph taken at the garden party are L to R Dr Norman, T.B.Groves, George Groves, Thomas Bennett, Emily Frisby, Polly Bennet, Emmaline Partridge, (kneeling) J.B.Frisby, (seated) Emily Bennett, Ruby Groves, Bedford Groves, Beatrice Groves, Emily Groves, John Payne. The people of Layham, and a few others, gave Emily Bennett a silver Georgian teapot with some “useful treasury notes inside it!” She also received “an address” (the certificate) containing the names of the (165) subscribers, “beautifully done by Mr P.F. Taylor and framed by her grandson Mr G. Groves”. It is not possible to reproduce the address at a size that enables all the names to be read but it includes people from all walks of life. A 100th birthday was clearly a very special event in the village. It is interesting to note that, in the Daily Mail of 3 June 2014, some statistics about centenarians were published. Just before the First World War there were only 100 centenarians in the whole of Britain. Reaching such a ripe old age was rare enough for there to be only 24 recipients of the first congratulatory telegrams sent out by the King in 1917. It seems likely that Emily Bennett was one of only such a small number in 1922. Today, Buckingham Palace sends out around 10,000 hundredth birthday cards a year! Do you live nearby and have links with Layham? The information above comes from a Hadleigh resident. We know that many people who have links with Layham read ‘Letter from Layham’ and we hope that long lost photographs or printed material is waiting to be discovered and can be copied for our village archive. PLEASE let us know if you have anything in which we might be interested. Just before Christmas a snapshot came to light through our contact with the Brice family of Hintlesham who were related to the Miller family of Hill Farm, Layham. It shows part of what is believed to be a crashed Lancaster bomber, guarded by RAF personnel. We know that a Lancaster aircraft came down on Hill Farm on 18th March 1944 (as recorded in Letter from Layham June 2103) and, as this was an unusual occurrence locally, it is reasonable to assume that this photograph records that event. What do you have in those old family photograph albums? PLEASE contact Michael Woods on Tel: 01473 823798 or email: michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net if you can help.

Layham Playgroup WELCOME BACK!!! The children have all settled fantastically after such a brilliant Christmas break. We would like to welcome all the new children who have started playgroup; we hope you enjoy your new adventure with us. Our focus this term has been all about how we can keep warm in the winter. We have been enjoying warm snacks and making our own soup to eat at the playgroup to help us warm up. We have also been talking about how we can help animals in the colder months by giving them food, as there might not be much for them to eat in the wild. We are in the middle of organising our first social event of the year… BINGO!!! Tickets will be on sale very soon at £10 each. Look out for our posters around the town! The money raised will be going towards some much needed new toys for the playgroup! Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Our Toddler group takes place every Wednesday morning 9.30-11.00am and is open to all children aged 0-5years. Parents are free to enjoy a hot drink (or cold) and a biscuit while their little ones let off steam joining in a variety of activities. Children also get to enjoy a small snack and cold drink during the morning. On 14th January we had George join us from the Children’s centre with lots of sensory activities for the children. It has inspired us to purchase some more sensory materials for the children to experience on a regular basis!

When my business moved to Queen Street, Paul worked tirelessly for 3 months transforming the premises into the beautiful Salon it is today. Always a person to help others I would now like to help the Vasculitis Society carry on their great work into researching this complex and rare condition. Dear Sir,

Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

Dear Sir, Take a very big bow Trevor Clarke, the cast and crew of Cinderella, it was great fun and a lot of hard work went into it all. I know this because my wife Joanne was the wicked-step mother, she and the other cast members had none or some acting experience making what they did even more special and personal to them. Nice to see a big turn-out for it, a big talking and turning point in the sense of community spirit in Hadleigh, I think because it was greatly needed. All cast and crew of H.A.D.S are looking forward to the next production later this year Paul Sheldrake

Dear Sir, This is a plea from the heart to whoever is setting off the bird scarer within earshot of Upper Layham… I don’t know whether you realise quite how loud and upsetting it is, how like a mini sonic boom. My dog barks madly when she hears the bangs – which at the moment, and since they started a couple of months ago, have been going off between ten and fifteen times a day. Ever since my move from noisy, busy old Benton Street some four years ago, I have relished the wonderful peace and tranquillity of being in Brett Green by the river. Until the bangs started, I felt so happy and lucky to be living in such quiet surroundings. (Now I too am ruining the peace for all my neighbours when I have to scream loudly at my dog to get her to stop barking!) So, if you are reading this – please - think of all the poor residents who value peace and quiet, and perhaps consider another option, or a reduced volume ‘setting’ if that’s possible. I can’t help worrying that this will be a year-round intrusion – and, if the bangs are so loud with the windows closed, I dread to think how loud and intrusive they will be come the summer, when I and others will want to leave windows open. I hope this plea doesn’t fall on deaf ears…(and, if it does, I can probably hazard a guess as to the causes of that deafness?!!) Christine Scott Fox

On Monday 5th January, traffic cones were placed on both sides of the High Street from Tye House/Vet’s Clinic back past the I.V., thus prohibiting parking on both sides of the highway. These were collected and removed on the afternoon of 9th January. No work of any description had taken place during this period. The cones reappeared on Monday 11th January and a roadworks team commence operations on Tuesday 12th. As a resident of the High Street I find it difficult enough to locate a parking space (not subject to possible fines) without unnecessary blocking-off in the event that someone may eventually start digging up the road. A simple note through the letterbox containing ACCURATE information would help, explaining the nature and duration of the works. As for the timing: Tuesday, temporary traffic lights, one lane access in both directions and yes, rubbish collection day! Could not the local council be more organised in these matters. D. M. Baulk

Dear Sir, I was interested to see the article by Mr Cartlidge with the promise of "concrete plans"and "concrete proposals"from his party. No doubt we will get a "cast iron guarantee " next. Stephen Laing

Dear Sir, The Town Council elections take place in May at the same time as the General Election. Unlike the General, County and Babergh Elections Hadleigh Town Council over the few years that I have been a member has tried hard not to play at party politics. Although most members are put forward and their campaigns run by a political party it is perfectly possible to run yourself as an independent member and to take full part in the work of the Town Council . Standing as an independent candidate is quite simple, notices are posted about the coming election and application forms are available from either Babergh or Hadleigh Town Council Offices. The forms are simple to fill in although you do need a few friends to agree to nominate you, and you act as your own Agent. Advertising or printed leaflets are produced at your own expense (if you stand for a political party then they undertake that activity and expense for you). Town Councillors do not get paid, the role is totally voluntary. In Hadleigh most of the meetings are in the evening so that people that work can attend. The commitment is as little or as great as you wish to make it. Town Council meets monthly, planning committee three weekly and other committees meet alternate months. All Town Councillors are also Trustees of the Guildhall Complex and that committee meets every three months. There are working parties undertaking particular projects from time to time and Councillors take part in the topics in which they might have particular interest. You do not need to have any particular expertise or experience in local government, indeed the wider the general experience of members the more lively and productive the council meetings are, we all have something to contribute. Being independent means exactly that, you do not have to follow any party lines, all that you need to bring to Council is a real interest in the Town in which you live and an ‘open’ mind. Please consider giving it a try, your only commitment is to your time over a period of four years, and you might actually find you enjoy it. Jan Byrne

Surprise Party Peggy would like to say a big thank you to Lisa, Cliff and their little helpers for arranging a surprise 80th Birthday Party at The George. Lovely food with family and friends, a great night! A donation will go to Magdalen House Day Centre.

Hadleigh Community Primary News Year 2 are down at the farm! Because Year 2 are studying ‘New Beginnings’ this term, they decided to focus their show on their topic and so have been learning songs and preparing a play called ‘Spring Time Down on The Farm.’ All of the children have been busy painting, making animal pictures and preparing displays in preparation for this show, working together as a team. Well done Year 2! Sports News Several lunch time clubs have started this term including the ever popular Running Club, organised by Mr Peters. This is an inter-class competition to see which class can run the greatest number of miles. Children are able to receive booster points if a teacher runs with them. Needless to say, some staff will also be taking up the challenge! Year 5 & 6 Hockey Club is also taking place at lunchtimes. This is run by Mrs Kirk and is in preparation for a tournament in March. Finally, selected children have been asked to participate in gymnastic training in preparation for the ‘Key Steps’ gymnastics competition in May. They are busy preparing before school and we thank them for their commitment and enthusiasm.

Whatfield CEVCP School 12 month fundraiser Another month gone by and my goodness have some miles been covered by Gary Cotter. You may recall in the last article Gary was running in the dark and this has continued. He just about had time for two days off over Christmas and New Year and then it was straight back to training. The mileage Gary has covered has been breathtaking (literally)!! Covering an average of 50 miles per week which is training over 3 nights and 1 over the weekend, which shouts Marathon ready to me. Broken down this is three 10 mile runs and then a long run at the weekend. To keep motivation up and company for our runner he has a training partner Karl who I am sure has thoroughly enjoyed all the cold and wet mornings over the last month. We are looking for as many sponsors as possible for the monthly marathons over the next 12 months and would appreciate any donations you could spare at www.justgiving.com/fows2015. The first marathon is coming up on 24.01.15 named the Winter Viking Coastal Marathon. These donations are going towards the Whatfield School (FOWS) to assist with the purchase of additional ICT Equipment so we can give all the children at our wonderful small school as much opportunity and access to the latest learning tools. Launch of Hadleigh Year of the Sheep

February – a Great Month for Films! Friday 13th February at 7.30 pm

ONCE (15) In 2007 a low budget musical was released in Ireland. ONCE is the story in both words and song and centres around an Irish busker and vacuum cleaner repairman who chances to meet a piano-playing Czech flower seller. He is still missing his girlfriend who has left for London and she tells him that she is married with a child. They join forces to promote their love of music. This film's music touches the soul and the film itself becomes irresistibly appealing . Now ONCE is a successful West End musical which captures the life and spirit of the original film but your Hadleigh cinema will save you the expense of a London journey so do come early and get the best seats!

Friday 27th February at 7.30 pm

BOYHOOD (15) This unique and ground-breaking film covers 12 years of a boy's life as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason. Filmed over 12 years using the same cast, the film captures the boy's life as he literally grows up on screen before your eyes. The master stroke with BOYHOOD was clearly the casting 13 years ago of a little Texas boy into the title role. Richard Linklater received best director award for BOYHOOD at the recent Golden Globe Awards and the film itself won best drama. Please note this film is 163 minutes in length. We are delighted to be presenting two contrasting films in February, both with universal appeal. Entrance to each film is £3.50 on the door and there will be our usual break for refreshment. As both films are certificate 15, children under this age will not be admitted. Please note this film is 146 minutes in length.

Hadleigh was one of the most important and richest of Suffolk’s medieval woollen cloth towns and in acknowledging the debt to the woolly quadruped, Hadleigh is launching the Year of the Sheep to celebrate the Town’s history, to come together as a community and highlight its unique attractions as a market town. Across a packed year, Hadleigh’s Community Groups, Schools and Businesses are getting involved in sheep-related concerts, races, games, obstacle course, exhibitions, mini-sheep ‘olympics’, tours, picnics, plays, crafts and much more besides. Organisers are inviting all to participate in making bunting, sheep in any material and forming fancy dress teams to enter traditional Suffolk games. Jane Haylock, Chair of the Organising Group, said: ‘‘Hadleigh people are about to get a fantastic Year of the Sheep - as wool was the reason for the growth of the Town, Sheep are a brilliant theme for getting the community together we’re planning with schools to create a gigantic sheep on the Conch overlooking the Town - a sight that will rival the Wiltshire Man.’ Teams, volunteers, Sheep wranglers and more are invited to join us. Rotary Review CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS: For once the weather was kind and produced almost perfect collecting conditions for the whole period. This time there was an equal split between house to house and static collections giving most children the opportunity to have a word with Father Christmas. It is hoped to continue this arrangement in future years. The results were as follows: house to house £836.03, Morrisons £566.36 and High Street on Christmas eve £312.00 making a grand total of £1714.39 to which must be added donations of £40.00. This was an excellent result and the Club extends grateful thanks to everyone who contributed for their tremendous generosity. Many thanks go also to the Manager and staff of Morrisons for allowing the collections and helping with setting up the float (especially Pete and his small band of assistants!!). The bulk of the collection has already been distributed to a number of local charities: 5th Hadleigh Guides, St Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, and the Rotary fire alarm scheme operated in conjunction with Hadleigh Fire Service to provide fire alarms for vulnerable households in Hadleigh. Any remaining funds will be allocated as required through the year. The Club is indebted to a number of local businesses and friends who help each year with equipment and collecting. Many thanks to all of them : Gary Hambling (Hambling Utility Services) for towing float and loan of generator, Ainger Holbrows Ltd for loan of battery, Hadleigh Bowling Club for providing a home for the float during the collecting period and to Fred Pratt for housing it during the rest of the year, and the collectors - George Wyatt, Trevor Stockton, Brian Strutt, Pam Bennett, Claire Coster, David Walmsley, Derek Curtis and Richard Whiting with the last two being Associate Members of the club. Without their help the collections could not continue. OBITUARY: It is with great sadness that I record the untimely death of Maraday Robinson, wife of member, John. Maraday passed away at Christmas after a long battle with cancer. She played a full part in Rotary life being a regular attender and organiser of the Rotary Ladies Monthly Dinner, she hosted with John many a charity garden party in their lovely garden in Kersey and gave full support to John in all his Rotary activities. Maraday will be very much missed by members and their wives and our thoughts are with John at this very difficult time. CLUB EVENTS: 1 The annual christmas party with partners was held at Stoke by Nayland Hotel in early December and, as usual, was a jolly affair. Once again, a number of couples stayed overnight enabling them to enjoy an after dinner drink and a good breakfast the next morning. A big thank you goes to the staff for looking after us so well. 2 This year the Traditional Champagne brunch held on the first Saturday in the New Year took place at the George in Hadleigh and thanks go to Paul and Tori for organising this ,providing a very nice breakfast and drink to make the morning go with a swing. SPEAKER: The first speaker of the New Year was Danny Thorrington, the new fundraising officer for St Elizabeth Hospice who spoke about his very varied career before bringing us up to date with Hospice affairs. He started working life as a paint and decorator with a local firm completing his apprenticeship before moving on to become a paint salesman with a large manufacturer. He became successful at this but was overloaded with work so decided to return to painting and decorating but this time selfemployed which allowed him to branch out into teaching and he started at Suffolk College as a technician passing on his painting and decorating skills to students including special needs classes. Using his sporting knowledge he was also allowed to introduce sport into the curriculum and this was noticed by Ipswich athletic club who encouraged him to obtain coaching qualifications. He went on to become development officer for Suffolk Athletics where he ensured that all sports were fully inclusive extending this to schools as well. This has been so successful that 48 sports are available to everyone including the physically, hearing or visually challenged, those with autism, learning difficulties etc. One of the popular sports in which he specialises is Boccia Loosely based on Bowls - and even the most severely disabled can become involved. Success culminated in Suffolk winning an award recently for the best inclusive school sports county in the country. Danny first became involved with the Hospice when his brother in law died of Motor Neurone Disease some years ago and has since regularly raised money for it. He felt that he had gone as far as he could with Suffolk Athletics so looking round for a new challenge he first started volunteering at the Hospice and when this job came up he jumped at it. The Hospice has 1300 volunteers but is always seeking more but even with the voluntary work it still costs £9 million to run each year of which £7 million must be raised in the community - certainly quite a challenge! His last duty at Hadleigh was to accept a cheque for £300 from the Club's Christmas Collection. MEMBERSHIP AND INFORMATION: please read the article elsewhere in this issue and for further information check Rotary Club of Hadleigh website or contact Rotarian David Stokes 01473 827226. Suffolk Cross Country Championships Hadleigh Hares were well represented at this years Suffolk Cross Country Championships held at Ixworth Park in Bury St Edmunds. The competition involves all of the running clubs in Suffolk with the top placed finishers going on to represent Suffolk at National level. The day started off crisp and sunny but when the fog descended the temperatures dropped sharply which made the waist high water ditch a bit chilly but it gave the spectators something to laugh about, especially seeing the ones who fell face first into it. Jasmine Hayward produced another excellent cross country performance to win the county Gold medal in the U20 category and our senior ladies team continued their impressive form by winning the team event ahead of Ipswich Jaffa. Elisa Bostock took the Bronze medal in the Jasmine Hayward senior womens category and our senior men 1st U20 Female finished in 5th position with John Scaife taking Silver in the Veteran category. Cross Country - Ipswich Ipswich Jaffa hosted Race 4 of the 53-12 Cross country league on the windswept fields surrounding the Suffolk Food Hall in Wherstead. Congratulations to our junior squad who pushed up into 9th position in the league. The junior runners were Noah & Esme Jamieson, Ella Bodsworth, Elizabeth Stewart, Freddie Ashmore and Sara Scaife. The Seniors extended their lead at the top of Pool B with another good team performance. Our first two ladies came home in 2nd and 3rd position. Sara Taylor-Balls raced well and Jessie McKenzie had an excellent debut run for the Hares. Danny Preece continued his good form finishing 16th in the Mens race. The 'Performance of the day’ award this week went to Jasmine Hayward for her battling efforts to hang onto 3rd place. Ladies Results 2nd Victoria Kenny, 3rd Jasmine Hayward, 25th Penny Grayson, 34th Rachel Bodsworth, 44th Jessie McKenzie, 49th Bernadette White, 52nd Katrina Rigby, 63rd Sara Taylor-Balls, 64th Amanda Dunn, 96th Deborah Stewart. Hadleigh Healing Society The start of 2015 has seen much bloodshed in the name of religion and generated much fear in communities across the world. This has been something that has been going for centuries and does not lessen as the years go by. The message of tolerance and love needs to be re-enforced to all so that we can all live in harmony with our fellow human beings There are those in society who interpret religious text in a violent way which is far removed from its original form this creates fear and violence. We all seek peace and harmony in our lives without the fear and uncertainty violence brings. If you are troubled and wish to talk to someone who will listen and not judge, in confidence please telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org. We are there for you.

Hadleigh Community Pre - School In this month’s Community News update we will be explaining what our aims and daily routine involve and how we also prepare our children for their journey onto school. We are a pre-school environment and we support our children by learning through stimulating active play with child and adult lead activities. We include phonics in our session which encourages the children to sound out letters. Unlike the schools we have a smaller ratio which means we have more adults in the setting; this allows the children to have high levels of support to meet individual needs and to support the children to gain knowledge and play experiences. Each practitioner has a small group of Key children. This allows us to gather information on individual children and we use our observations and knowledge given by parents to then develop play/interests through the curriculum. Our Morning Routine: 9.00 -9.15am Arrive at playgroup, greeted by staff, children self- register by finding their own name with a parent. This encourages recognising their own name. 9.15am Registration- We sit in a circle and talk about the weather, day and date, and anything else exciting the children have to tell us. We then sing our Rainbow Song. 9.20am Free play- During free play the children will be choosing their own activities inside and out, there is always a craft option for the children to access. Adults will be taking observations and playing within an area. 9.45am Rolling snack- children can access the snack table when they feel hungry, we encourage the children to wash their hands, they again find their own name and sit with the children and an adult at the table. 10.30 – We sit down for a story all together, the staff will then change the room into focused activities. For example building, counting, colour games, mark making etc. the 2 year olds will have some time outside or with an adult in a quiet area for an activity, while the 3,4 year olds have a phonics session then all the children sit at an activity with an adult and friends to encourage the children in well- defined different areas of learning and play. 11.40 – Circle Time - at this time we all join back together to sing some nursery rhymes and to show and tell! This develops the children confidence in talking together. 12.00 – Some children are collected from playgroup and some children will stay on for lunch club. The afternoon session runs the same as the morning, the children are then collected at 3pm. Our setting helps to prepare children for the routine of school, learning through play which research suggests that children thrive during active play! During the free flow play the variation of ages proves to be a positive and helps the older children to understand the needs of others and to become independent. For the younger children they mimic the older children’s behaviour and this helps settle and develop their new skills. Please look out for our new web page, which will be up and running this month, you will be able to access all of our information, updates and contact us. Also keep an eye out on Facebook or the webpage for when we will be starting up our toddler group once again. We still have spaces! We except 2-5 year old Government funding is available for 15 hours of free childcare for all 3 and 4 year olds, if you have a 2 year old they may qualify for 15 hours of free childcare too! We are an Early Years Provision which provides a range of fun and challenging activities, inside and out! All are planned to be age appropriate and suits the interests of the children. In the setting the children play and learn together supported and encouraged by qualified practitioners. Like the Schools we follow the same Early Years Foundation curriculum and have a ‘Good’ with ‘Out Standing’ areas Ofsted report. All children are able to stay within Playgroup until they reach the age of reception. In our Ofsted report they identified that children ‘benefit from a very richly resourced and childfriendly environment which helps them to make strong progress in all areas of their learning and development. We welcome children from 2 years to 5 years of age, children that are 3yrs will be able to receive Government Funding and some 2 year olds, which will need to meet a criteria. If you are interested please pop along to see us or contact the team on 01473 827702 or e-mail hadleighcommunityplaygroup@googlemail.com

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Plenty of activity at the Millfield in recent weeks with manager Stuart Crawford handing in his resignation on New Years Day after four and a half successful years in the job. Ian Brown was appointed as the new manager with Alan Dilloway staying on as assistant. A pointless run of results saw Hadleigh first team lose against Mildenhall, Felixstowe and Norwich United without scoring a goal and conceding nine at the other end of the field. This bad run ended with a great win against Clacton at the Millfield by six clear goals. The Reserves had a draw, a win and a heavy defeat in successive matches. The draw saw six goalsshared at Brantham while the win was a splendid success at Gorleston by four goals to two. That was following by a five goal thrashing against Brantham at the Milfield. This was a fine performance by Brantham on muddy pitch as overnight frost thawed. A leg injury to Damon Artiss left us with ten men for the last twenty minutes as Brantham dominated. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team had several games postponed by waterlogged pitches. The home match against Cornard was won by seven clear goals with Ollie Dunlop scoring a hat trick and Sam Sharp a couple. Brandon Metcalfe and Callum Bentley also scored in a superb team performance. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Liam Scopes and Kris Rose. The Ground Improvement draw was won by Rolf Beggerow. Both draws were made by Nick Barwick at the Brantham Reserves match on 17th January. Terry Adams

Hadleigh Cricket Club needs your help! Complete our survey and tell us how an extended pavilion at our club could benefit you and the Hadleigh community. Hadleigh Cricket Club has recently received planning permission to build an extension to its pavilion, which would include new changing rooms, toilets, disabled access and an enlarged meeting room/club area. Our vision is to create a facility that will serve the community of Hadleigh as well as the demands of our fast developing club. The new building will enable other groups and organisations to use the facility at the same time as cricket activity is taking place – something not possible within the current layout of our pavilion. The enlarged function room could, for example, be used as a meeting venue for other sports, social and recreational clubs, as well as offering enhanced opportunities for community leisure and learning. So how can you help? You can support us in this project by telling us how you and your family may use the extended facility. Simply complete the short online survey at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y8XRG7L It will take just a few moments of your time, and the information we receive will help us as we plan this exciting new development for our club and community. It would be hugely appreciated if the survey could be completed by 15 March 2015. Thank you for your co-operation. HCC Pavilion Extension Project Team

Ellie Aldous New County Junior Captain Newton Green’s Ellie Aldous is to be junior captain of Suffolk Girls for 2015. The 16-year-old still has two seasons of junior golf to represent the county, and has already become a member of the senior team squad, including making her debut in the regional county golf week during 2014. One of the longer hitters in Suffolk ladies’ golf, she and fellow Newton junior Alice Barlow became the youngster ever winners of the county’s prestigious Haskell Trophy in 2013. Ellie is at West Suffolk College where she is studying for a BTech in Sports Excellence Sciences. She has played at Newton since the age of 10, and in 2008 made national headlines when she beat off a 100-strong field of adult golfers to win the club’s prestigious Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Ellie then played off a handicap of 42, although qualification for the event has now been cut to 36. During the year her handicap was five, but at present stands at six.
