The Cedric Morris Florilegium Hadleigh welcomed 20 of the country’s leading national and international contemporary botanical illustrators, who descended on Shelley during the flowering season, to paint an illustrated catalogue of Morris’s prized iris’s. The collection of irises is grown by Sarah Cook, who was awarded a Gold Medal at Chelsea 2015 for her outstanding display. Cllr Dr Sian Dawson is spearheading the project dedicated to his memory is keen that this legacy will be gifted to the people of Hadleigh. ‘There are few Florilegiums around the world and all artists wanted to participate in this unique and colourful project. It is planned the complete collection of 28 iris paintings will be submitted for exhibition to the Royal Horticultural Society in 2017, followed by a display in Hadleigh to celebrate the Year of the Garden. I trust this cultural legacy will draw people to the town, boost the local economy and play a significant part in our cultural heritage’. Members of the project include Anne-Marie Evans who chaired the Highgrove Florilegium for Prince Charles, the President of the Floral Society of Painters Jenny Jowett, Chair of the botanical judges for the RHS Gillian Barlow, as well as 8 RHS Gold Medallist and 10 Silver Gilt Medallists. The artists spent the day painting the collection in Sarah Cooks garden followed by a magnificent afternoon tea courtesy of Mr and Mrs Reid at Overbury Hall, who welcomed the artists and ladies from the Women’s Institute, who very reliably brought a wonderful collection of cakes. Each artist was a given a sample iris of the flower they have chosen to paint to take away and were hugely appreciative of the welcome they received.

Get Back On Your Bike Success

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s first venture to encourage women to take up cycling was “a great success” according to Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club. “Eleven women signed up and despite the dreadful early summer weather seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience,” he added. Amongst the participants, who took part in coached off-road sessions, was a lady in her sixties who had not cycled for many years and wanted to ride out with her grandchildren. The Club is exploring options for another course next year. Club members took part in the Mud Sweat and Gears event at Carver. The following riders feature in the standings: Alex Spraggons, William Lowe, Jack Chamberlin in the Under 9s category, Alex Cutmore and Daniel Flockhart in the Under 12s, Ben Lowe and Ryan Gooderham in Juvenile Male, Molly Cutmore in Youth Female, Andy Laflin and Tony Green in Open Male and Adam Chamberlin in Sport Male. Local cyclists are getting ready to sign up for the Gayford Flyer, Hadleigh’s own sportive on September 18th. Last year’s event attracted over 200 adult cyclists and the town’s cycling club is looking to tempt even more. The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 60 and 32 mile routes will take riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton. Cyclists can sign up via www.britishcycling.org.uk from 18th May, Oswald Gayford’s birthday. The sportive is supported by The Pedal House, The George Public House, Sunny Day Cycleworks and Crockatt Garage. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or email or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

SOLD BY LET BY

Now the sunshine has eventually arrived, why not follow this trail around the streets of Hadleigh that features sites connected with the woollen-cloth industry, which brought prosperity to Hadleigh from the 14th to the 17th centuries. From documentary evidence, 43 locations have been identified as being the homes of clothiers or weavers or the sites of woad houses for dyeing, watermills for fulling and tenter yards where cloth was stretched as part of the finishing process. Compiled by Sue Andrews, this 24 page booklet includes a brief introduction to the industry and its processes, a map and directions for a circular tour around the streets of the town as well as details of each location and its connection with the industry. Les Selby has contributed colour photographs of many of the places featured and older scenes of Hadleigh have come from Hadleigh Archive. On sale at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street, price £4.00.

Howard on The Orwell Hello dear Readers: my friend Eric Bauly so well known in the local classic car world celebrated his Seventieth Birthday in June. My mother and I were delighted to join his party on board the cruiser Allen Gardiner as it made its passage along the River Orwell. What an exciting thing to do. The boat has an illustrious history dating from the Second World War. We had an enjoyable dinner; there was a fabulous Rolls-Royce birthday cake and we saw the sun set. I am captured in the picture with the Orwell Bridge glowing behind me. My chauffeur Frank drew up in front of Colchester Town Hall to deliver me for a wonderful organ recital given by Peter Crompton, Organist Emeritus of Royal Hospital School at Holbrook. I bet that few of you have been to the Moot Hall that spans the top of the Town Hall dating from 1896 and decorated in exquisite panels and such like. It is really worth a visit. The Town Hall has been described as one of the most exuberant and confident municipal buildings in the Country. The Norman and Beard Organ stands in all its splendour ready to speak to the Hall. It was a great way to spend a lunchtime and for owner drivers parking is available behind Williams & Griffin. Frank’s cherries have ripened and are almost dropping off. They’ve been enjoyed with cream, in pies and Maria has lined a shelf in her pantry with jars of jam. Frank was pressed into service for one or two longer runs to include a visit to Headcorn Aerodrome near Ashford in Kent. What a busy and bustling runway. We were even treated to the arrival of a Spitfire and a Hurricane which had dropped in for re-fuelling en route to the open day at Heaveningham Hall. We boarded a Lear Jet to whisk us back and left Frank to fight his way through the traffic. We have had several instances recently where good clients and their relatives have suffered unexpected serious illnesses so that they are unable to run their affairs. All the resulting problems would have been overcome if a Lasting Power of Attorney had been in place. Just like making a Will, it is one of those things that you should have in place. We can deal with these matters for you and so do arrange to come to see me. Now that the political machine appears to be on an even keel again and as we come to the end of the Summer holidays, I am expecting to see buoyancy in the property market. It makes sense for you to contact us at an early stage so that arrangements can be dealt with for your sale or purchase. Howard Gibbons

Thank you so much Angel Delights Everyone at the Alison Fracella Research Trust would like to say a sincere thank you to Helen Golland (the angel at Angel Delights!) for everything she did to make our Cream Tea event on June 26th so successful and enjoyable. Special thanks also to her team of her daughter Charlotte, Jo and Becca for all their help on the afternoon. A big thank you to Helen’s husband Simon for printing the tickets and posters for us. The colourful bunting (thank you so much Ruth) Helen’s vintage china and cake-stands added to the occasion and everyone said that they had a wonderful time. Helen’s scones (freshly made by her that morning) laden with her home-made jam and clotted cream were a real treat. Thank you so much to everyone who made cakes for us to sell during the afternoon. Helen, so kindly and so generously, donated all the ticket money to our cause. After expenses we made £749 which is a fantastic amount. Every penny will go to the Royal Marsden Hospital where the Trust is supporting brain tumour research. A huge thank you to Helen, to Sue and Roy, to Carol and Neil and to Emma for all their hard work and to everyone who came and gave us such generous support. Thank you all very much. Sue and Rob Kettlewell

The inaugural Hadleigh Soapbox Race is coming this September! Remember whizzing down a hill at a gazillion miles an hour? Want an Adrenalin rush to get your season started? Has your bucket list got an unticked box against it? or Are your up for a Challenge to impress your closest buddies? If so, read on... Hadleigh RFC is inviting all comers to enter the Hadleigh Soapbox race. If you have your own or can build one before the 11th September, brilliant. If not, the Club are going to offer a number of Hill Ready Gravity Flyers that you can cling onto for the duration. The course will be on the Holbeck Hills, with a number of different categories - including, we hope, a Veterans Voom-Voom-Voom. Being led by First team Captain, Oli Beckerlegge, the event will be run on a long Sunday afternoon, with spectators welcome: 'We want our Season to be at a flying start, so what better way than to race pell-mell down the hill closest to our home pitch.' As the inaugural race, we will have a minimum age of 14 and - as with all Karting events - participants will have to agree a disclaimer (parental permission for under 18s). Ainger Holbrow are signed up as one of our sponsors and we'd like other organisations to get involved too. To get an application form and/or for more details, contact: Jonathan on 07545 545744 or by email jmoore.suffolk@gmail.com

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 35 (August-September 2016)

When I wrote the scripts for “we are the The Hadleigh Historian Hadleigh Clothiers” that was presented at The Hadleigh Historian Hadleigh Year of the Sheep Grand Finale, Issue 35 August – September 2016 Price £3 I imagined William Foorthe to be a rather arrogant man and that is just how Daniel Thompson played him. William’s speech plus pictures of his home and coat of arms appear in this issue together with an arrogant-looking costumed Daniel. Hadleigh is very fortunate in that it is possible to trace the lives of men such as William, who brought properity to the town through their management of the woollen-cloth industry. Not only are their memorials in St Mary’s Church and probate copies of their wills at the National Archives but through surviving records of town government during the 16th and 17th centuries held in Hadleigh Archive, their handwriting can be seen. Pond Hall is now the subject of the series ‘Manors of Hadleigh’. Eventually the estate extended for nearly 1000 acres (400 hectares) on both sides of what is now called Pond Hall Road on the way to Hintlesham. In the 14th Century, Helming Leget, Lord of the manor of Pond Hall and constable of Windsor Castle, copied features at Windsor Great Park and created them here in Hadleigh, albeit on a much smaller scale. Many can still be seen including the site of a medieval deer park, which was later used in the 20th Century as Hadleigh Airfield (See The Hadleigh Historian 19). In 1666, one of Hadleigh’s many charities was established by Arthur Gaell. For a great number of years, rent was received from the house in High Street that Arthur gave as his endowment but records were not kept as to where the money actually went. Towards the end of the 19th Century, Hadleigh Urban District Council reported that nothing could be found regarding the origin of the charity or any details of the original donor. Now the story of apothecary and town mayor Arthur Gaell is told. Today, his charity continues to support young people in Hadleigh with assistance when starting out in their chosen profession, trade or calling. Thanks to Michael Ayden of Shotley and Nigel Crisp and Beryl Allen of Hadleigh, other features in this issue include the story of two members of the eighteen family who were transported to Australia for various misdemeanours; photographs of the now lost building Duke Street Mill that belonged to Wilson’s Corn and Milliing Company; and pictures of a break from harvest work in the 1920s on land now Bradfield Avenue and Bradfield Crescent. If you would like to share your knowledge of the town and its surrounding countryside as Michael, Nigel and Beryl have done, please contact the editor: Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG (01449740673). Issue 35 is on sale at Avis Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollowtrees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

The Hadleigh Ram becomes a Dementia friendly Restaurant Dementia has become increasingly common as a condition that has affected people for many years however it is only latterly the condition has been more in the public eye. Dementia affects many individual and families alike, especially when confronted by a change in environment, such as a bar, restaurant or hotel and because of this can be a deterrent for those living with dementia and their families going out, for fear of embarrassment or rejection. In order to help people live well with dementia and encourage them to continue normal life, Stuart Inns in collaboration with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, arranged for their front of house staff to attend dementia friends information session so they can offer the required standard of service when necessary. Having undergone the necessary Dementia training provided by Hadleigh Dementia Friends we are very pleased to announce The Hadleigh Ram became a Dementia friendly restaurant on Saturday 2nd July 2016, the first Dementia Friendly restaurant in Hadleigh, Suffolk. Lorna Pissarro commenting on the award said – “with dementia now more understood by people it is important we at Stuart Inns and our staff do all we can to meet the expectations of customers who may suffer from this condition and make them and their families feel even more welcome when in unfamiliar surroundings.” Tracey Loynds, Chair of the HDAA said – “we are delighted that Stuart Inns and the team at the Ram agreed to become the first dementia friendly restaurant in Hadleigh. Every time a new business signs up to the Alliance, we move one step closure to making Hadleigh a dementia friendly community. Once again “News from the Station” – an informative article to help local residents, keep you up to date on issues that may affect you, and offer advice. The new County Policing model for Suffolk Police has now been in operation since April 4th. These changes have been made to the structure of local policing and the way in which we deliver our services to the public. Whilst Hadleigh Police Station is now closed to members of the public, I would just like to point out that Hadleigh SNT, (Inspector, Sergeant, 3 constables and 4 PCSOs) are based at the station. Response officers are sent out to Hadleigh to cover emergency calls and will be visible in the town and surrounding villages. However, we currently cover 49 villages in addition to Hadleigh, from Hemingstone to the North, Brantham to the South, Nayland to the West and Shotley to the East. We work with partner agencies to deliver local solutions to local problems, focusing on early intervention and prevention. So with this in mind, we welcome any problems or issues that you feel we can assist with. Recently much of my time has been taken up with anti-social behaviour in the town, as well as “neighbour issues”, speeding issues and parking, all of which I know residents are passionate about. Suffolk Police supports the use of social media as a means of talking with and listening to the communities we serve. Suffolk Police can be found on Facebook, Google, Instagram and You Tube. Officers in Hadleigh have recently joined social networking site TWITTER and will be issuing regular updates about news, events, arrests and what’s happening in your neighbourhood follow us on @HadleighPolice. The short updates (tweets) will give a better insight into police work. The corporate account is: @SuffolkPolice. However, it is important to remember that TWITTER is NOT the place to report a crime or raise an issue you need to discuss in confidence. (similarly Facebook). For non-emergency matters call: 101. In emergencies always dial 999 Sign Up And Get Connected With Police Connect. This is a free messaging service connecting you to the very latest policing news via email, text, or phone. It will provide you with localised information for a variety of situations including – emergency alerts, missing people appeals, crime reports, events. To register, contact 101 and we will get a form to you, alternatively you can register online at : Suffolk.police.uk/policeconnect. Lost and Found property is an area of work the Police have had to adapt due to a number of issues and the new advice and process can be found on our website www.suffolk.police.uk/faqs/lostandfound.aspx On another matter, we are appealing for volunteers for the following: CCTV VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR SUDBURY As you may know, Sudbury and Hadleigh town centre CCTV system is monitored by volunteers who play an important part in keeping the community safe. We are keen to recruit additional volunteers to support the current team, if you are interested, please email Gwen Taylor for more details gwen.taylor2@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Until next time, PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell, Hadleigh SNT, Hadleigh Police Station, Magdalen Rd, Hadleigh IP7 5AD Email: hadleigh.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

Lunch Bunch Pre-lunchtime drinks were taken on the terrace overlooking the River Stour at the Henny Swan Pub. These were followed by a delicious two course meal and coffee inside their restaurant. All diners were delighted with their choice of food which was hot, tasty and most attractively served. AGM Just recently gentleman members at Hintlesham Golf Club were surprised to find that half of their dining room was given over to a considerable number of extremely well dressed ladies. Those in the know were aware that this was an occasion ‘Fit for a Queen’ and the Fidelis AGM. Club business and votes of thanks to and from the Committee were speedily dealt with leaving plenty of time for members to enjoy their afternoon tea. As there were no nominations for positions on the committee the present incumbents will continue. Ipswich Waterfront Tour Between the impressive and less attractive modern constructions at the Ipswich town’s waterfront there are still a few historical buildings from its heyday as a flourishing port. The majestic Customs House and the Salthouse, now a hotel, are just two examples. Thanks to two Blue Badge Guides and a fine afternoon members were able to imagine the harbour as a busy staging post for people and commodities to other world destinations. The walkers then left the waterfront for a brief look at other ancient points of interest including the Victorian Cobbold swimming baths built in 1894 and a minute ancient Jewish Cemetery. Just before information overload set in the two groups boarded the sailing barge ‘Victor’ for refreshments. Hatch, Match and Dispatch Not many professions meet members of the public at three of the most emotional times of their lives. A registrar is one such career. Senior Ipswich Registrar, Jane Parker, encounters excited new parents, nervous blushing brides and bereaved family members. Jane drew attention to trends and fashions which have taken place during her career. The most obvious were children’s names and wedding style and Jane gave clear examples of each. Comparing marriage statistics from the past to present day proved interesting too. Jane fielded several questions from the audience before setting a light hearted quiz on the topic. As there were three winners a final ‘decider’ question enabled Kay Whittle to claim the chocolates. Everyone agreed it was a most informative, entertaining evening. JD

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk What a month it's been: we have voted in a referendum; received the resignation of our Prime Minister; undertaken a leadership contest; chosen our second female Prime Minister and completed a substantial government reshuffle. Interesting times indeed! Although I was disappointed about the result of the referendum, I am delighted that we now have a strong leader and a stable government who are well placed to negotiate the terms of the UK's exit from the EU and to carve out our new position in the world. I supported Theresa May's leadership campaign from the beginning and have every faith that she will be an excellent Prime Minister. Away from the whirlwind of distractions in Westminster, my work in the constituency has continued. I recently held a 'leafgate' summit in Sudbury with senior representatives from Abellio Greater Anglia, Network Rail and the Department for Transport. We were joined by John Curley, a rail resilience expert, who had been commissioned to investigate how leaf fall caused the Gainsborough line (from Sudbury to Marks Tey) to shut down for 13 days last autumn. Mr Curley outlined the unique circumstances that had led to the buildup of leaf mulch on local branch lines, and Abellio and Network Rail outlined their plans to ensure that the same thing does not occur again this year. After the meeting we all took the Gainsborough line to Marks Tey to discuss ongoing issues on this and the mainline. I am pleased to announce that there have been a number of developments in the campaign for improved mobile signal in South Suffolk with pre-application conversations about new masts happening in Boxford and Glemsford, whilst Vodafone recently launched 4G mobile in Sudbury. Back in Parliament we held a high profile debate about renewing Trident. I argued that nuclear weapons are the most hideous human invention but that paradoxically they have given us the most beautiful thing - peace, if not from of all conflict, at least in terms of us avoiding a hideous World War 3 that I believe would have been inevitable in the latter half of the 20th century, without the deterrent in place. As I said, interesting times.

Although generally through the 1980’s and ‘90’s Vodka was the go-to drink of the people (Whisky was still seen as a bit elitist) Gin eventually saw a slow and steady rebirth from 2000. Brands like Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray helped to push the spirit early on and this was backed up by the likes of Hendricks and finally, the brand that helped all new ‘regional artisan’ distillers, Sipsmiths. Since then, the market has exploded, so much so that in the UK alone in 2014/15 forty nine new distillers started their own unique Gin brands. But where do you find out about these new regional craft Gin brands? That’s where GinPunch.com steps in. We are about taste, flavour, aroma and people. We will show you all the best Artisan Gin, Gin cocktails, Gin characters and all the best mixers for a fantastic Gin experience. We’ll group all the best products together for an explosion of flavour that will get your taste buds dancing every night of the week. What a workout! Premium artisan Gin’s have a huge scale of flavour due to the wide spectrum of botanicals used and when some of those botanicals are from unique local surroundings, no two gin’s are the same. Historically, Whisky and Wine had the proprietary high ground on local flavours and aromas but not anymore. We like to think we are Gin educators. At GinPunch.com you can view video tasting notes and find out about regional flavours. Maybe you’re travelling and visiting a new city? We can help you find the best Gin bar or distillery. And if you just want a tasting experience, we offer Gin tasting evenings and have a shop full of craft Gin’s you won’t find in the supermarkets. Throw out your preconceived ideas about what Gin used to be. Embrace the new Gin revolution. Embrace flavour, aroma, taste and fun. The picture shows our ‘Tipsy Tasters’ Gin box that contains 3 x 100 ml craft Gin bottles – that’s 3 pub double gins in each bottle – as well as two great small brand tonic’s and even a pack of gourmet Gin & Tonic popcorn. All for just £29.95. www.ginpunch.com info@ginpunch.com 01473 828385

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together French Theatre Production A professional french theatre company came into school to perform Portmanteau, “a fantastical, theatrical, cinematical” which helped us celebrate our French Day. The children from reception through to year 3 were entranced through the whole production. The children entered into a 1940’s travelling cinema and were totalling amused by the antics of ‘Jack’ the hero, ‘Melody’ the heroine and of course the baddy, ‘Baddie, McBad’. Bikeability Our year 5 pupils were able to take part in the Bikeability course which was provided by “Freewheel Cycle Training”, a provider of cycle safety training which is approved by Suffolk County Council and run here very successfully each year. All of the children enjoyed learning about how to ride their bike safely. Father’s Day Lunch On 16/17 June we held our Father’s Day lunches which were extremely well supported. Key stage 2 Dad’s sat down to a delicious lunch. After lunch exercise was a must to get rid of some of those calories; so a football match was the obvious answer. Dads, sons and daughters all took part and they all had great fun! Reading Café KS1 On Friday 1st July Bee and Owl Class held their second Reading Café. At their last reading café children and parents voted for the author or book they wanted in today’s event. Julia Donaldson was the clear winner! Parents/carers had a chance to find out about a wide range of her books and some ideas that could be used when reading books at home. Adults and pupils also had a variety of reading, writing and art craft activities which they could take part in. Bradfield Woods Our year 3 and 4 pupils were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend four Forest School sessions at Bradfield Woods over the last two terms. These sessions were for the whole day and involved learning about the trees and animals of the forest as well as practical forest skills. The sessions were very successful and they thoroughly enjoyed their outdoor learning. Quad Kids Ten of our year 5/6 pupils attended the annual ‘Quad Kids’ festival, held at Northgate Sports Arena on Wednesday 15 June. They had to rotate around four different activities: 600 Metres, Standing Long Jump, 75 Metres & Vortex Howler. They also had to represent a country other than their own and we chose South Africa as this is part of our curriculum studies this term. The children had ribbons, stickers and a flag to show off their country as they all paraded around the arena with over 1000 children taking part. The children had a wonderful time! One of our children achieved a bronze award over the four events! Well, its August and the Centre’s clients are resting. I’m thankful to report that with 11 horses and ponies here this summer a noble band of volunteers keeps coming along to poo pick and care for the live animals and see that all is well. But me and Babs? We are behind closed doors so I can’t report on much this month. Thought you’d like to see my portrait though. What better person to share the page with me than HRH the Princess Royal? Did you know that Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, and RDA (that’s us) has launched a new charity initiative? In preparation for RDA’s 50th anniversary in 2019, Wooden Spoon has pledged to help the RDA fund a team of horses across the UK. RDA is experiencing a growing demand for services amongst older children and needs to increase the number of bigger horses (my sort of size you see) at its centres. Wooden Spoon aims to help fill this gap. HRH, The Princess Royal, who is Royal Patron of both charities said: “I am particularly pleased as this exciting initiative combines two of my big passions, horses and rugby.” Good for you M’am. STOP PRESS: news from the Shelley Fun Dog Show just in: a great time was had by all on July 9th at the Centre and the weather was kind to us. We were delighted to welcome 81 dogs and their families here even though Parys had to give up her field for the whole day. Look how it was transformed into a real showground! We start up again on September 5th and the first event is our Long Distance Ride on Sunday 11th September. See you then!

A Big Thank You to Hadleigh Community Choir The trustees of the Alison Fracella Research Trust would like to say a very big thank you to everyone at the Hadleigh Community Choir for their very kind donation of £175 from the proceeds of their recent Summer Concert on July 2nd. As usual it was a wonderful Concert which we thoroughly enjoyed. Alison loved her music and singing and so the donation is particularly appropriate. Thank you all so very much for thinking of us. Sue and Rob Kettlewell

Fashion Show by Edinburgh Woollens Hintlesham and Chattisham Tuesday Circle are holding a Fashion Show by Edinburgh Woollens on Tuesday 6th September at 7.30 pm in Hintlesham Community Hall. Tickets are £4 and all profits will go to SARS, the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service. If you would like to come, please phone 652362 or 652592 to help us with numbers. There will be light refreshments and we MAY have some male models!

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 If you came to our Annual Open Day on 31st July you know more about it than me at time of writing. Obviously Kelvin cannot hold the press, even for me, but I can tell you our volunteers enjoyed meeting some of you at the Shelley Fun Dog Show last month. The RDA kindly invited us to have a stand promoting SESAW which proved very popular. During the busy weeks prior to our big event we were grateful for the help offered by the willing girls and boys from Purina. Many hands made light work of erecting marquees and sprucing up the kennels ready for our happiest day of the year. Another good day in July was the Long Melford Street Fair. I’ve heard lots of people say it was a great day and nearly £600 was raised on the SESAW tables which is absolutely terrific! We would also like to thank all the generous people who leave food at the Hadleigh Co-op and Morrisons. Mum was very glad to see lots of kitten food and cat litter coming in when it was most needed. Your kind donations should keep us going through August which is usually quiet. If you are planning to visit us during the holiday period, it’s best to check in case we are closed. What with all the Open Day enquiries to follow up and people going away, the only one available to see you might be me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Armchair Players At our July meeting we read Ladies Who Lunch by Tudor Gates. This is a cleverly written amusing play about three wealthy women who outwit their husbands in a form of insider trading. We are a play reading group that meet on the second Monday of each month. For more information contact Jackie on 01473 824229.

Heritage Open Afternoon at Orchard Barn Orchard Barn is a living history project where we use natural building materials (earth and trees) and a traditional approach to construction. Subsoil has been used as a building material throughout the world for centuries. In mid Suffolk there are still many houses and farm buildings constructed from clay lump. Building with earth is part of our heritage. At Orchard Barn we have all the materials we need to build a wall directly under our feet, and we like to keep fit naturally! It’s a great combination that’s lots of fun. Just recently we have been making clay lump blocks for our new craft room. We start the process with a spade. Currently we are improving drainage of a ditch and ‘harvesting’ the clay as we go. Then we tread chopped straw in until mixed well. Clay lump mix is tamped down into a wooden mould, then turned out and dried in the sun for 3-4 weeks. A simple, but effective heritage building practice that is making a come-back – one spade-full at a time. If you would like to see how we make clay lump blocks or wattle and daub, then come to our Open Afternoon between 2-4.30pm on Saturday 10th September. It’s part of the national campaign to show the rich and diverse heritage of our buildings. During the afternoon we will be doing a presentation about the restoration of Orchard Barn - a Community Interest Company run project that has involved over 1600 people in the use of local trees and earth. Come and see what we have achieved and how! For more information visit www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193 / 07766 054042 New volunteers always welcome.

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers A group of 12 came along for the July walk. We had been worried that the wet weather we experienced during our recce would make the walk very muddy and wet. Fortunately we had a dry spell before the day which turned out very warm, so the Queen’s Head in Lower Layham proved to be a welcome stopover a mile or two before the end. For the August walk on Saturday 13th we will catch the bus to Hintlesham then walk via Lower Barn Cottages, Washbrook Street, Coles Green Farm, Chattisham Hall and back to Hintlesham for the bus back to Hadleigh - a distance of 7 miles. Those feeling energetic can walk back to Hadleigh a further 4.6 or 6.3 miles depending on the route we select on the day. We will meet to catch the 0940 bus towards Ipswich (Co-op side) and alight in Hintlesham. Those catching the bus to return should make the 1333 from outside the George. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

News from St Mary’s Primary School Summer Fete Once again, the annual Summer Fete was a great success! The weather was on our side and there was a lovely, community atmosphere. As usual, there were lots of activities, stalls and refreshments available. The children really enjoyed the unlimited use of a range of inflatables – many of them kept bouncing for hours! Many thanks to all the parents and staff members who gave their time to organise and run the Fete. All your efforts are much appreciated! Not only was it a fun-filled occasion but we also raised lots of money to support the school. Sports Day The children showed fantastic sports skills during our annual Sports Day. The Early Years children took part in various races, including the ‘egg and spoon’, relays and a fun dressing-up race. It was great to see the young children supporting and encouraging one another. Sports Day for the rest of the school was a great success despite the rain half way though! The teams competed well, giving their all and showing perseverance when they needed to. The children were good sports and cheered everybody on. Thank you to Mrs Ratcliffe for organising all the events and well done to all the children who showed the best they could be. It was great to see so many parents and other friends joining us. We are looking forward to seeing the children develop into great sports stars! Cultural Experience Thank you to Siya Twani who visited the school to talk about diversity and understanding other cultures. Siya led an assembly for the whole school and then ran workshops for groups in Key Stage 2. It was great fun – the children particularly enjoyed learning music and dancing from Africa. It was also fascinating hearing Siya’s life story, including meeting Nelson Mandela, and what it was like growing up in South Africa during the time of apartheid. The main themes were about tackling prejudice and not judging people on their appearance. The children learned a great deal and it was a thoroughly enjoyable, captivating experience. Worship This month, we have been thinking about the value of ‘humility’. Many thanks to all the people who have visited to help us, including Daniel Thompson, Brynn Rickards and Greg Frost. Oak and Elm classes joined together to put on a wonderful assembly for their parents and the rest of the school. They acted out the story of Icarus. We were all really impressed by the children’s costumes and acting skills! Open Classrooms It’s really important for us to work closely with parents. ‘Open Classrooms’ is a time when children can bring their parents into the school to see their work and share their achievements. It shows the children how much we all value their learning and helps parents find out about the methods and strategies we teach in school. Parents have the opportunity to chat to teachers informally about their children’s learning and progress. Once again, it was great to see so many parents in school. Clarinet Performance The children in Rowan and Chestnut classes have been learning the clarinet throughout the year. This month, they took part in a celebration of their year of music along with other Suffolk schools that have been supported by the County Music Service. They performed the songs they have been learning and enjoyed watching children from other schools playing a variety of instruments, including violins and brass. It was a lovely event and a great opportunity for the children. They have worked really hard to learn the clarinet and practise their songs! Well done to all the children!

Two Years of War As far as is known no Hadleigh men lost their life in August 1916. In early August, news arrived home of the death of Gunner James Charles Chisnall who was killed on the Somme battlefield on 26 July 1916. James was born in Hadleigh in 1896. At 15 years old he was employed as a factory hand and living at 13 Angel Square with his parents James, Sarah and siblings Elizabeth, Bessie, Francis, William, May, Arthur, Sidney and Freddie. We do not know when he joined the army, but we know that he entered France on 20 July 1915 and served with ‘D’ Battery, 23 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. On 6 July 1916, James’ unit were in the Carnoy area and were engaged in ‘wire cutting’. (shelling of the German front line in an attempt to destroy the German barbed wire). On 26 July 1916 they were in the area of Montaban and while the day had been relatively quiet, at 4pm they were subjected to heavy enemy shelling. The war diary reports that 5 men were killed, including one gunner from D Bty, 23 Bde (this was James). He was originally buried close to where he was killed. However, after the war his body was exhumed by a graves recovery unit

Hadleigh Community Primary School School Camp 2016! Yet another successful school camp for Hadleigh Community Primary School! About 200 children and 70 adults enjoyed their time outdoors. Fortunately, the weather was on our side and we escaped with only a couple of short, sharp showers. Activities this year included making tree spirit faces in the woods with clay, a “bake off”, cooking over the fire and clubbercise dancing in the evening. This, alongside the old favourites such as Bat and Moth and the water slide, made for a great time had by all. Many thanks to all involved! Here’s looking forward to Camp 2017! Ofsted Inspection Result We have now received our OFSTED Inspection report, which recognises Hadleigh Community Primary School as a good school. We have improved rapidly since the last inspection in 2014 and Ofsted’s last monitoring visit in May 2015. The inspectors recognised the dedication of all staff and governors in bringing about this improvement. Amongst many positive comments the inspectors stated: • “pupils make good progress and achieve well because of good teaching” • “the governing body is effective” • “teachers provide consistently good-quality teaching and learning activities” • “teaching assistants and apprentices are well trained, skilled and enthusiastic” • “the early years is a strength of the school” • “the wider curriculum is outstanding” • “pupils respond very positively to do their best in everything they do” • “the school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding” We are very pleased with the report and are all committed to continuing the school’s journey to outstanding. Most pleasingly, and in keeping with the community of Hadleigh, the inspectors commented that “a strong sense of community is at the heart of Hadleigh Primary, where everyone is proud of the school and committed to ensuring its future success.” Year 6 Trip to Africa Alive On July 19th all of Year 6, accompanied by the Year 6 staff and volunteer helpers, had an amazing time visiting Africa Alive near Lowestoft. The children were split into groups and travelled around the park taking in the enormous variety of animals, some of the favourites being: giraffes, tortoises, lions and even goats! There were excellent exhibits such as a lemur enclosure that members of the public can walk through, Zulu dancing (which most of the children had a chance to join in with, and they were even lucky enough to see a five-day-old zebra with its mother. As a small celebration of their final few days in Year 6, they also visited Southwold and, thanks to their own fundraising with the Virgin Fiver Challenge in Year 5, they were treated to chips and an ice cream on Southwold Pier. Despite it being a long day, the children enjoyed it very much and many thanks must go to them for their good behaviour. Also, a special thank you to all the volunteer helpers who made the day go so smoothly. Finally, the very best of luck to the Year 6 leaving us to go to various high schools; be the best you can be!

Thankyou Marianne Jones family would like to thank all who came to the Service of Thanksgiving at Hadleigh URC. Our grateful thanks to the Revd. Bryn Rickards and all Marianne's doctors, nurses and carers.

Sports Day The summer term is always a busy one, packed full of different events and activities. One of the highlights of the summer term is always the Sports day. Sports day at Beaumont isn’t just a day when we celebrate sporting achievement. The children, their families and friends Sports Day: Iceland – The Winning Team! mark the occasion with a picnic lunch on the school field before the activities in the afternoon. The children then take part in various sporting activities, competing for a team trophy. Luckily the weather was kind to us and we enjoyed a full afternoon of sport. This year there was a football theme to the day, with children being placed in a team named after the countries competing in this year’s European Football Championships. Earlier in the week the children had spent time designing and creating their own team t-shirts which they wore on the day. After a very close competition Iceland came out victorious, receiving the Sports Day trophy and individual medals for their efforts. A visit from the Town Mayor Hadleigh Town Mayor, Councillor Trevor Sheldrick, visited the school recently to award the children with a special prize for their efforts in designing posters for a district wide ‘Clean for the Queen’ competition which was organised earlier this year. The town council were so impressed with the quality and quantity of the entries from Beaumont that they decided to award the school with a £50 book token. Councillor Sheldrick Hadleigh Town Mayor – Trevor remarked on how it was so positive Sheldrick, presenting us with a that the children supported a project, prize for the ‘Clean for the Queen’ the aim of which was to benefit the poster competition local community. Summer Play One of the highlights of the summer term is always the production that this year Beetle and Dragonfly classes worked so hard to produce. Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies, a comical tale of outlaw adventure, was performed brilliantly and to a very high standard. The children had to learn a number of songs which they sang extremely enthusiastically. They also had to stage several complicated scenes, which took some careful planning and skilful acting! The children thoroughly enjoyed performing and gained a great sense of satisfaction from the experience. Year 6 Residential Trip Norfolk was the destination for a courageous group of Year 6 children as they headed to Kingswood outdoor education centre for a residential trip. The children, for some of whom this was their first time away from home without their parents, were faced with a number of adventurous activities over the 3 very busy days away. The first challenge the children faced was perhaps the most tricky – the challenge of making their beds! Once this was overcome the children faced an array of activities that really tested their skills and abilities. Caving, Archery, Laser Tag, High Ropes, Night Walk, Fencing and Abseiling were just some of the activities that the children took part in. Without exception, each child that went, put in 100% effort and showed great determination to complete the challenges set when faced with these types of activities. Certainly fears were faced by some, but with the encouragement from the other children these fears were overcome. The children returned home exhausted, but perhaps with a new found confidence in themselves and what they can achieve. Sad goodbyes… The summer term is also a sad time too as we have to say goodbye to our Year 6 children as they move up to secondary school. In the last week of term Spider Class will be performing a special Leavers’ Assembly – The Next Big Step, which I’m sure will be a great success! We wish them all well for the future. This year the Year 6 children are not the only ones we will be saying goodbye to, as a number of staff move on to new positions in September. We thank them all for their hard work and commitment while at Beaumont and wish them all the best for the future. We will also be saying a sad goodbye to head teacher Goodbye and Miss Burton after 13 years of outstanding service to Thank You Beaumont school. I know she’s very much looking Miss Burton! forward to a bit more free-time come September! She we will be sadly missed and we all wish her well for all her future adventures!

New Formula Cambridge Weight Plan At the beginning of 2015 the Cambridge Weight Plan Development Team embarked on the major process of reformulating every product in their range – over 30 products – and at the same time developed 4 entirely new products. This was instigated by a change in EU law which decreed that all meal replacement products manufactured after 20th July 2016 could be no lower than 200 calories. Therefore, although we are now no longer part of the EU, the Plan has had a full overhaul, ensuring the products taste as good as, or better than, previously; aspartame has been removed from all products (except water flavours); there’s more product per meal so you are less likely to get hungry making it even easier to get the great results you want! And the with-food steps now have greater choice giving you lots of flexibility to enjoy meals with your family or friends without jeopardising your weight loss. The Plan has been carefully researched to ensure it is nutritionally balanced. It works because it focuses on more than just losing weight. The Steps Plan offers a combination of Cambridge Weight Plan products and everyday food choices, which will help you to build a better relationship with food. This means that you can maintain the weight you want, long after you’ve reached it. Cambridge Weight Plan has 6 steps which have been devised for weight loss but also help retrain long-term eating to maintain a healthy weight. If you’d like help to give your body a boost and lose some weight (average weight loss is a stone a month*) into the bargain why not try Cambridge Weight Plan..? If this is too worrying for you and you feel you cannot cope please come and talk to our qualified registered healers about your concerns whether they are big or small. Kersey Mill Newsletter The month of June has been a pretty wet month, the river Brett here at Kersey burst its banks and the water wheel was turning unaided with the rising levels of water. The water levels here are very much governed by the Toppesfield Mill gates, there seems to be a lack of management of these gates, quite often left closed when heavy rains are forecasts. Our family of swans, mother and father and 5 cygnets disappeared for a week during the heavy rainfall, returning once the water level subsided but unfortunately only bringing with them 4 cygnets. Sadly a Kingfishers nest was also a victim. The five Kestrels have fledged this month, it’s been fascinating to watch the mother and father teach the fledgling’s to hunt and fly from low branches and then encouraging them to take each flight higher and higher, building their confidence step by step. We were very saddened to have lost a copper beach tree, probably at least 100 years old. However we are going to use the wood for materials in the mill. The teeth that need to be replaced within the 3 crown wheels will be made using the Beech. Raymond Hopkins who has been working with our Millwright and who is very good carpenter and wood turner is also going to produce some bowls which we will be selling with the funds going to the restoration project. We are looking forward to our Fundraising Summer Ball, with over 120 guests and a fun planned evening to include wonderful food, fabulous music by Georgette & the Distractions along with a DJ and an auction This weekend Kersey Mill will be hosting the AGM for Suffolk Mills Group. It will be a privilege to show members the latest stages of the restoration of the Mill which will be a vast improvement from this time last year, Suffolk Mills Group have been hugely influential with the restoration and their guidance along the way has been incredible helpful.

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Enrichment Week (20th / 24th June 2016) The aim of Enrichment Week is to provide some extended opportunities for learning new skills in a different learning environment. Employers look for young people who are rigorous, rounded and grounded, with not only skills and knowledge, but also the wider behaviours and attitudes that are needed for success in life and work. At Hadleigh we support and encourage this wider development in young people as a part of their school journey to ensure that all young people can fulfil their potential. To be successful pupils need to be able to have opportunities to develop their skills over an extended period of time. The learning sessions over the week enabled them to hone leadership skills, improve personal and group organisation, lead others, develop resilience, use their initiative and communicate with a wide range of audiences. Miss. Harding who organised this whole school event shares her account below: As a teacher, Enrichment Week is my favourite week of the year. It allows pupils to be introduced to concepts and ideas that may otherwise not have been addressed within the curriculum. Students are provided with the opportunity to take the lead in the way the week is developed and their ideas are fully explored. The skills used in this approach introduces pupils to how they will be expected to develop a vision, problem solve and work with others when they eventually leave education. Pupils are often not placed in friendship groups, and although many are anxious about this at the beginning of the week, by the end they have made new friendships with pupils of different ages. By not being in a friendship group, pupils experience a new challenge. Working with those they don’t know allows pupils to rise to different challenges. Early in life we can pigeon hole different people and their skills. When we work in a group we know well then we can often think, “X is the arty one”, “X is the one that comes up with the ideas”, “X is the leader”. When pupils find themselves in a group they don’t know it provides them with the opportunity to show that they too can do these things; it allows them to take risks and discover things about themselves they otherwise would not have known. There are so many times in Enrichment Week that I see staff excited and sharing stories with each other about how a pupil has gained confidence, excelled in a new skill. So many of our pupils met the challenge of working with those they don’t know head on and they flourished. Activities The opening ceremony of an Olympics is to welcome visiting nations and to provide them an overview of its history and culture. This was the purpose of the week. The pupils were divided into five continents, Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and Americas. Europe Pupils in the Europe enrichment group spent the week exploring the Olympic Games from its somewhat selective starting point in Greece to the spectacular diverse and inclusive event that it has now become. Exploring the culture of Greece students got to try their hands at terracotta pot painting, toga dressing and Greek mask and mosaic making. Some students also got the chance to cook some delightful Greek recipes in the preparation for the presentation at the end of the week, and there were many funny faces pulled as many overcame the challenge of trying out new foods and delicacies! Finally, a games wouldn't exist without the sports themselves. Exploring the world of sports students looked at the ethics behind sportsmen and women cheating, carrying out their own experiments to test their morality. Some students also tried out Boccia and Indoor curling for the first time. Two Paralympic sports that required tactical skills as well as sporting ability. Africa Pupils in the African enrichment group spent the week exploring the Olympic Games by celebrating the diverse countries in Africa and challenge the 36

stereotypes that people have of African Athletes and Africa as a whole. Pupils created a baobab tree, a common species of tree in Africa. This is important to the African people. The baobab tree is known as the tree of life, with good reason. It can provide shelter, clothing, food, and water for the animal and human inhabitants of the African savannah regions. The pupils decorated it with traditional African patterns. The African group had a dance and drumming workshop to enhance their understanding of the traditions and cultures from different areas of Africa. They created murals looking at the history, sport and wildlife of the continent and created tie-dye clothing. Americas Pupils in Team Americas looked in depth of how the Americas is more than just the USA, exploring the different cultures. Ancient culture was explored and the symbolic meanings of totem poles and their importance within a community. Healthy eating was examined and the properties of foods. The pupils also took part in activities surrounding the Paralympics theme and played sit down volleyball. The group was given the challenge of cycling from New York to Chicago, a total of 790 miles. As a team they completed this challenge by way of exercise bikes. Asia Pupils in Team Asia spent the first two days experiencing different aspects of Asian culture. They learned Karate and Origami, and made Sanskrit Drama Masks, Anime/Manga-style Olympic mascots and decorated beautiful Chinese Umbrellas. On the Wednesday morning some pupils created murals while the rest of the pupils took part in a Pagoda building challenge. The sporting side of the Olympics was explored on both large and small scales, with the decathlon on Wednesday afternoon and the 'Tiny Olympics' challenge on Thursday. Pupils put together an Asian festival presentation on the Friday, which comprised of what they had experienced throughout the week, as well as exploring the sights, smells and tastes of Asia. Oceania Students in Team Oceania were asked to think about what this stunning unique continent. They looked at the culture, art and geography of various countries, exploring the origins of many customs and traditions. To develop their understanding of the Olympics, all students were put through the paces and trained for a track and field triathlon, a gruelling session of sprinting, jumping and throwing. This clearly worked, as Oceania triumphed emphatically in the Sporting events on Wednesday afternoon (how good was our tug-of-war team?). They were also busy making their own instruments and creating a zoo of the local field (thankfully restricted to models from clay). Students also showed off their presentation skills by devising a number of succulent dishes for visitors to sample, performing creation myths that were set to music played on their own instruments and inducted others into the secrets of southern hemisphere rugby. As well as this, they pulled together to produce a stunning entrance for the Humanities Block that took people on a journey through painted caves and into the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Year 7 Camp – Mersea 125 Year 7 students took part in a 5 day activity camp at Mersea Island. The week was filled with fun, challenge, new experiences and A LOT of water! Students took part in activities such as climbing, high rope challenges, caving, worked in groups to complete team challenges and finished the week with an ‘It’s a Knock Out’ competition. The students who attended the camp coped well with the unpredictable weather. It was certainly a memorable trip for all the staff and students.

Ardéche 2016 Two bus groups, travelled to the Ardéche/Mediterranean areas in the South of France for a two centre activity holiday. They left school at 11:30am on Thursday 16th June and travelled by coach and cross channel ferry reaching the PGL Centre Mimosa the following morning at 10am. By 11am they were on the beach, playing entertaining games in the water. During the first part of the holiday pupils experienced a range of water based activities such as pico boats, catamaran, fun boats, wind surfing and raft building. Evening entertainment comprised of a fun night of Robot wars, an excursion one night to Cap d’ Arge, a local fishing port with an opportunity for the pupils to do a spot of shopping. On the Monday morning they packed up leaving Mimosa for Decathlon and then on to Aqualand. They left the water rides at Aqualand and set off for our second PGL centre - Segries. This PGL Centre is right in the heart of the Ardéche region of France. The following morning pupils were then taken to Peaches which is the starting point for getting onto the Ardéche river. Pupils got into small boat groups and were allocated an instructor. By 11:30am they were paddling down the river and going under Pont-d’Arc – one of the largest natural arches in the world. It stands at 60m high and 54m wide. The views were breath-taking! On the first day they only stayed on the river for about 3 hours and then went back to the Centre for the evening. That night they packed barrels ready for the following VATcarried is moving online April 2010 in the gorge day where they on canoeing downfrom the river. Temperatures for the 2 day descent reached 35 degrees centigrade and the UV rating for both days was rated 11. This was undoubtedly the highlight of the holiday for many of our pupils, the thrill of a two-day white water descent down the ArdécheAbout river, riding rapids and staying overnight thethe new penalty regime for on thea bivouac late site, in a sleeping bag, on a groundsheet under the star was an amazing experience for payment of PAYE them all. They returned home at 12:30am on Friday 24th June after an excellent journey and all pretty exhausted, including the staff! Don’t let these small details panic you! This is our thirteenth year returning to the Ardéche. FOR ALL YOUR SKIP HIRE NEEDS

As I write this our nation is going through some difficult times with lots of changes ahead. We will have a new Prime Minister and our relationship with Europe is going to change. There is unrest both in the UK and other countries and the newspapers would like us to believe in doom and gloom. But is there hope for the future, who will help us and guide us? Recently standing on the shore of a lake I was surrounded by mountains and a verse from the Bible came to mind. Psalm 121 verses 1 and 2 says ‘I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.’ This verse reminds us that God who made the world including us is able to help us whatever our circumstances or needs. Further in the Psalm, verse 7 says ‘The Lord will keep you from all harm He will watch over your life’. In all times of our lives God will keep His promise and lead us, guide us and protect us. Taking place on Sunday 11th September, over 300 people are expected to join in. The local law firm organises the annual event to raise funds for charity. Last year, Holmes & Hills raised over £8,500 for Cancer Research UK, the firm’s 2015 charity of the year. Celebrating its 11th year, the 2016 Holmes & Hills Solicitors' annual Charity Bike Ride will once again start and finish in Halstead. Taking place on one special Sunday each September, the Holmes & Hills Charity Bike Ride is one of the largest non-competitive charity cycling events in the area. The event is open to anyone including individuals, families and teams of colleagues and will take place on Sunday 11th September and offers three scenic routes to choose from – 11, 26 or 53 miles. There will be a complimentary after-ride BBQ and refreshments for those who take part. Each of the three routes goes through some of Essex and Suffolk’s finest countryside. Mark Cornell, Managing Partner of Holmes & Hills Solicitors, who is himself a keen cyclist says: “I am very pleased with how the event is getting bigger every year, it all started small 11 years ago, it just goes to show how the people of Sudbury and Halstead are keen to support good causes. This event promises to be a great day out.” Registration for the event is now open; riders who wish to take part can register online via Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ website: www.holmes-hills.co.uk/BikeRide or pick up an entry form from their office at 96 North Street, Sudbury.

Dad's Army still lives in Walmington-On-Sea when the cherished Home Guard platoon deal with a visiting female journalist and a German spy as World War II draws to its conclusion. Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Catherine Zeta Jones and Bill Paterson lead an all-star cast, acting their parts with gusto to give us a gentle reminder of the pleasure of this classic series translated to the big screen. Refreshments will be available at an appropriate interval when we will serve teas, coffees and choc ices, but, we regret no World War II rock cakes!

We returned to an old favourite in July, a ‘garden safari’, where we all visit a select number of gardens belonging to fellow members. It certainly proved to be an adventurous evening, kicking off in Hadleigh with Louise’s relatively new garden which she has built from scratch and is full of interest, with yet more to come as further landscaping projects are looming. With the thunder clouds gathering we all then sped off to Jenny’s beautiful mature garden in Aldham. The heavens opened on arrival but that didn’t deter us from taking a ‘brolly tour’ along the paths that weave around beds full of summer perennials. As we left, the rain stopped – just as well as shelter was hard to come by at the Gallows Hill allotments, where my own plot and Dave’s gave everyone something different to see - including Dave’s deckchair haven in his shed bolthole! A double rainbow hung in the sky as, last but not least, it was off to Kate and Ray’s wonderful garden on the outskirts of Kersey. Many of us had been there before but it is always a treat to see, and we rounded of what was by then a lovely summer evening with supper in a 16th century barn. Our next meeting – Monday August 8th. For our next meeting we welcome a new speaker to the group, Phil Taylor, who will be talking about ‘Trees for your garden’. This is certainly a subject many of us would benefit from further knowledge of, so why not come and join us? All are welcome – members £1, non-members just £3, including refreshments. The meeting will be held at Hadleigh Town Hall and starts at 7.30pm. Andy Leeder - Chairman

Hadleigh Evening WI The speaker at the July meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI was Dave Smith, a retired crime scene investigator. His role was to provide sufficient hard evidence to convict those guilty of crime or rule out the innocent. This involved an examination of an individual’s finger prints and more recently DNA. Thanks to computers local information can be transmitted nationally. Our Annual Garden Party will be held on 5th August at Pond Hall Barn IP7 5PQ, the home of Helen Allan, starting 5pm. As usual we will be inviting members from the WIs within the Three Valleys Group. This year we hope to welcome any ladies who are interested in joining the WI. We are sure it will be an enjoyable event. At £5.00 to include food and drinks, this is excellent value. To book tickets phone 01473 823130 or text 07747795245. There will be no meeting in August. On 20th September Hadleigh Evening will meet with Elmsett WI. Edinburgh Wool Mill will be presenting a fashion show. Hadleigh Evening hold their regular meetings in the Seminar suite above the library on the third Tuesday of the month starting 7.30pm. On the 18th October we will have a traditional harvest supper. First Responder, Yvonne Free will demonstrate first aid. Visitors and new members will be welcome. Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057 Email phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk

Down to Earth ...with Dave What a topsy turvey summer we are having, one day it’s hot and sunny then the next day it’s pouring with rain. In the main this has not affected the production of crops down on the allotment. It just means that at times it has been a bit more difficult to get on with the various jobs that need doing. I have never seen such luscious growth in everything. With the brussels, caulis, celeriac, runner beans, sweetcorn, courgettes and everything else growing as if they are in a race to see which crop can be the first to be eaten. So far the yellow courgettes are in the lead. One downside of the mild damp weather is that the potato blight has set in early, with all the potato tops having to be cut off and disposed of at the tip and not on the compost. This should help stop the blight spreading next year. If caught early enough the tubers will not be affected. As the tomato is closely related to the potato they can easily become infected and the tomato crop may well be destroyed. My answer is to grow the tomatoes at home in the garden far away from any possible infection. The asparagus crop is finished by mid- June with the spears left to develop into the lovely fern. This builds up reserves for next year’s crop. Only a very few of the ferns are taken as a floral partner to the masses of sweet peas being produced at home in the garden, growing in their three large tubs and trained up six foot bamboo cane tripods. The blossoms are picked every couple of days, if they are not picked regularly then the sweet peas will think its job is done and will just stop flowering and set seed. When the runner and climbing beans reach the top of their frames the tops should be nipped off. As I am not very tall I just nip them out with the shears. When the cauliflower curds start to show they can be protected from the weather by breaking and folding over the outer leaves. Keep watering and feeding hanging baskets and tomato plants. The fruits are beginning to form and before you know it we will have a glut. It may seem strange with all the rain that we have had but, if you can, give the birds some clean drinking and bathing water. The sight of half a dozen starlings having a bath in our concrete bird bath is a pure joy. Most gardens have plants that evoke particular memories. We have a very large concrete pot with a hydrangea in it. This was my dad’s and, for as many years as I can remember, it was always in the front garden of wherever he and my mum lived. When he died it was moved to our garden in Romford from Northampton, and then when we moved to Hadleigh ten years ago, the very heavy pot, complete with the metal frame that I had made for it, came with us. The hydrangea has survived all the various moves and has given many cuttings over the years. Precious memories. That’s all for this time, Dave

MATTERS ARISING Councillor Young requested clarification on the last paragraph. It was suggested that Mr. Passmore, the Police & Crime Commissioner could be invited to attend either a future Town Council meeting or the Annual Town Meeting. East Anglian Devolution Councillor Cook asked if any information had been received on this subject and was advised that to date the only information available was the document that had already been circulated to Councillors. The Mayor stated that this was the intention he made in the press that Hadleigh Town Council be used to provide information that the public require via social media. Illegal and inconsiderate parking was discussed again and the District Councillors were requested to put pressure on Babergh District Council regarding the decriminalisation of parking in the town. Hadleigh Town Council would continue their efforts and request the Police to provide a PCSO when time allows to deal with parking in the town. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS County Councillor Riley and District Councillor Grandon had provided written reports. Councillor Grandon advised that she could not provide any more information on Angel Court other than that already provided. She would, however, be happy to take any comments made by Councillors and report back to Babergh District Council. It was recommended that four and three bedroomed houses were not required and if the site was to be developed would they consider 1 and 2 bedroomed starter homes with the provision for rental. One Councillor had had two residents suggest that the building be demolished and the site be used as a carpark. Again the request was made that our District Councillors continue to push for the District Council to seriously consider decriminalisation of parking.

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.

Parish Council The main points discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 29 June were: • County Councillor’s report Suffolk County Council’s Record Office had received a grant of over £0.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards their proposals for a new heritage centre. The new facility would house most of Suffolk’s archives and a range of archaeological records, and would also be a unique visitor attraction and cultural resource for the community. The council was allocating £10m of additional investment from its reserves into the current programme of road surface dressing during the spring and summer. Suffolk Fire & Rescue had published revised proposals for service changes, forming part of its 2015-18 draft Integrated Risk Management Plan. With regard to the 40mph speed limit through Upper Layham, Councillor Jones said he had chased progress on this as the consultation period had not yet started. He would also look into the reinstatement of white lines, cat’s eyes and road markings following resurfacing work, and the possibility of extending the 30mph speed limit in Stoke Road to the parish boundary. • Playing Field The PC’s application to use some of the Section 106 money for laying artificial turf in front of each goal mouth on the playing field had been successful. • Gardeners Close Flagship Homes had confirmed that works were being carried out to cut back overhanging trees to the fence line. • Annual Return Sections 1 and 2 of the Annual Return were completed and signed by the Chairman and the Clerk/RFO. The Annual Return would now be sent to BDO for external audit. • Green Team It was agreed to obtain quotes for installing gates from the main playing field to the conservation area, which would make it clear that it was a conservation area and thus encourage people to keep their dogs on leads whilst in there. • Emergency Plan It was agreed that the final version of the Emergency Plan would be brought to the August meeting for approval. The working party would make a recommendation about the contents and location of an emergency box(es). • Defibrillator in Upper Layham The inside of the phone box in Upper Layham had been cleaned out and the exterior pressure washed. It would now need to be painted inside and out – volunteers would be sought to carry out this work. • Planning With regard to the gardens for the two new houses on the site of Raworth Bungalow, it was agreed that the Clerk would write to Jack Wilkinson, Planning Enforcement Officer at Babergh/Mid Suffolk, to request clarification on the future use of the agricultural land. • Priorities for 2016/17 The Chairman referred to the consultation held four years ago, which had led to the Community Lunch events and the Local History Group being formed; he proposed carrying out a similar exercise to consider priorities for 2016/17; this was agreed. Parishioners would be invited to submit ideas via the Hadleigh Community News and the community email. There would then be a formal discussion at the August meeting to agree priorities. • Lights on Layham Road Playing Field The Clerk would write to Hadleigh Town Council to express concern that the new lights were too bright and badly positioned, causing a potential hazard to motorists. • Loose dogs on public footpath A letter had been received from a parishioner following an incident with a Waterhouse Farm dog while she was walking on the public footpath. It was agreed that the Clerk would write to the owners as the PC had a duty to draw their attention to this. • Environment Agency A letter had been received from the Environment Agency explaining some changes to the operation and maintenance of mill gates in the area. The information was noted. • SCC Countryside Access Consultation The consultation invited views which would help in the preparation of the new Rights of Way Improvement Plan, which included footpaths, bridleways, byways and restricted byways. It was agreed that the Chairman and Vice Chairman would meet to discuss this and then complete the questionnaire. 44

Layham Parish Review It was four years ago when an open workshop was held in the village hall to try to identify issues that mattered to parishioners. Concerns and suggestions were recorded and actions were taken. Unfortunately, there is a big gap between what we want and what we can achieve! For example, a few years ago two councillors attended bi-monthly meetings over a period of eighteen months in an effort to make the case for the pavement between Layham and Hadleigh to be widened at the Layham end of Benton Street. We got as far as several thousand pounds being spent on a feasibility study - only for SCC Highways to judge that the work could not be a priority for the available funds. On the other a hand a campaign, backed by our County Councillor, has resulted in a speed limit of 40mph to be introduced between Hadleigh and Upper Layham. Signs will be erected later in the year. Also, the 30mph limit sign near the Marquis is to be moved beyond Windy Ridge – requiring cars to slow down sooner as they approach the village. A priority identified four years ago was to start a Lunch Club. That happened through the good work of Parish Councillors and several volunteers and the events are always a sell-out (the last one was in July). SO – what else could we do? Members of the Parish Council would be pleased to hear from anyone who has suggestions as to how life in the village could be improved. We are more likely to achieve modest projects than over-ambitious costly schemes. We are also more likely to succeed if volunteers come forward to offer time or expertise - or both. Take a few minutes to send an email to Jane Cryer, the Parish Clerk, at layhamcommunityemail@gmail.com or phone her on 07920 713940. The Parish Council aims to set aside some time during its August meeting to discuss possible priorities for 2016-17. ST MARY’S HADLEIGH www.stmaryshadleigh.co.uk The second photograph is one of many that features full scale meals presumably cooked in the very basic kitchen of the village hall. At a guess, the event in this photograph took place in the 1960s. The photo tells us that the favoured liquid indulgence of that time was a bottle of ale (for both men and women) – the drinking of wine had not taken-off. It would be great if the young man on the left is still in the Hadleigh area and can identify himself (and maybe others?). If you can help, please contact Michael Woods on 01473 823798 or email michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net

Layham Playgroup CIO Hellllloooo Sunshine! Finally we managed to get the paddling pool out! The children enjoyed lots of splashing paddling in the water. We have been reading ‘Pig in the Pond’ which the children love joining in with and find the story very funny. We created our very own pond in the garden which the children have enjoyed putting the farm toys in to recreate the story themselves. We have been talking about the upcoming summer holidays and preparing some of our children for the next step in their journey of education. We will be very sad to see them move on to school and Nursery but we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our playgroup. We still have some spaces available from September, if you are interested in having a look please feel free to contact the playgroup to speak to one of our staff members to arrange a visit. We wish all our playgroup families and lovely summer holidays and will be back in business on September 5th to start our Autumnal activities. Layham Playgroup CIO is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. Parents are free to enjoy a hot drink (or cold) and a biscuit while their little ones let off steam joining in a variety of activities. Children also get to enjoy a small snack and cold drink during the morning. We wish all of our Ladybird families a fantastic summer and look forward to seeing you all back in September.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are asking landowners throughout the districts thinking of allowing development on their land to get in contact with the councils. The two District Councils are producing a new Joint Local Plan which will replace the existing adopted plans of both Councils. The new Joint Local Plan will include the allocation of sites for residential, employment and other uses in order to meet the development needs of the districts up to 2036. The ‘Call for Sites’ provides an opportunity for developers, landowners, Parish & Town Councils, individuals and other interested parties to register land within Babergh or Mid Suffolk districts to be considered as a potential allocated site in the Joint Local Plan. In addition, the Council is also providing an opportunity for landowners who wish to make a site or plot available for ‘self build’, an option that allows individuals to obtain planning permission to build a home of their own, to do so at this stage. The Call for Sites will identify potential sites for development, but no site put forward will automatically see development take place: each registered site will be considered in detail by the Babergh and Mid Suffolk planning teams before sufficient sites to meet projected need in the districts are selected to move forward. Once the assessment process is complete, the Councils will consider the options and undertake further consultation, including discussion with infrastructure providers and local communities. A previous Call for Sites exercise was undertaken in autumn 2014. At that stage the focus was on larger sites to inform the identification of the councils’ strategic site allocations. Following the decision to produce a comprehensive Joint Local Plan for the two Districts, the councils are revisiting the Call for Sites process so that smaller sites can also be identified. In accordance with national policy the Councils are inviting the submission of sites and broad locations. The sites submitted could be for housing (sites of at least a quarter hectare or capable of accommodating five or more dwellings are eligible), employment, community facilities, open space, renewable energy, car parking, gypsy and traveller sites or other uses. The Call for Sites process is not restrictive in relation to where sites are suggested, but it is unlikely that sites proposed in very rural areas will be suitable locations in which to build new homes, or provide new employment. However, the information provided is essential in assessing the available land and to aid us in considering where development should be distributed under the Plan. Landowners are urged to note that for self build sites there is no minimum size threshold on submitting a piece of land, so small individual plots can be identified. Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk District Council Portfolio Holder for Business Growth & Increased Productivity, said: “We are facing a lot of population growth in Mid Suffolk and we’re determined to meet that challenge: this Call for Sites is an early opportunity for the council to plan effectively for growth and provide a starting point for Local Plans and Neighbourhood Plans. Cllr Simon Barrett, Babergh District Council Portfolio Holder for Business Growth & Increased Productivity, said: “Any landowner in the district can put forward sites for this, and will not only help us prepare for the future but will also give communities an understanding of where development could fall as they work on their own Neighbourhood Development Plans. The Call for Sites registration form and guidance notes are available on the council’s website at: www.babergh.gov.uk/shelaa or www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/shelaa All forms should be returned on or before 5pm on 26 August 2016

Meteors August is the month for you if you love seeing shooting stars as this is the time of the peak activity of the Perseid meteor shower, caused by the Earth passing through the orbital plane of a comet discovered back in the 1840's called Swift/Tuttle. This year we have a full moon just 6 days after the event (on the nights of August 12th and 13th), so there will be some interference from the Moon, but this year could see a increase in meteors seen , so that may very well negate this. You will see up to 60 meteors an hour weather permitting if you look in the general direction of the North-East at around 22.30 BST and after. Now, I've talked about meteor showers before but never told you what the different colours you may see represent. The colours would be as follows; Red = Nitrogen/Oxygen. Yellow = Iron. Purple = Calcium. Orange = Sodium. Green = Magnesium. These colours are due to the relative influence of the metallic content of the meteoroid versus the super-heated air plasma. So as each layer of the sandsized piece of dust burns up high above our heads, a new layer is revealed and this process continues until the particle evaporates. As comets are made of a multitude of different elements, you could quite easily see any of the above colours ( though yellow will be most dominant). Larger particles can create a sonic boom as the explode high up and some can create a "crackling" noise too. Whatever you see/hear, I wish you the best of luck and I would love to see any pictures/sketches or reports . So that's it for August. The nights are getting shorter, so don't worry, I'll have lots to talk to you about the next coming months. All that remains to be said is, enjoy your holidays, get outside and keep looking up. A very happy birthday to my beautiful daughter, Keira-Louise, for the 20th, too!! Any questions, please do contact me at; neilnorman03@gmail.com

Newton Green Youngsters back in National Final

Ben Tatum, Alice Barlow, Mike Stevenson (Suffolk Junior Golf Chairman) and Harvey Watts.

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

Newton Green’s juniors have come out top of the pile to represent Suffolk for the second year running at the national team golf championship event. They will be returning to Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, on August 11 and 12 with a tough task on their hands - improving on the fourth place they achieved last year. A Newton trio of Alice Barlow, Harvey Watts and Ben Tatum qualified by winning a close 100 - 98 Stableford points Suffolk final battle with Haverhill at Felixstowe Ferry. None of them played in last year’s national final, even those that did all still qualify, which underlines Newton’s strength in junior depth talent. Barlow, the current Suffolk senior and junior champion, did not play in last year’s competition, and with some wayward driving did not perform to her handicap of three against Haverhill’s Fiona Stokes (handicap 12) and went down by 30 - 35 points. However, Harvey Watts (5) won by 35 - 28 to James Iron (12), and Ben Tatum (6) and Josh Hulyer (13) both finished on 35 points - leaving Newton victors by two points. Suffolk junior golf chairman Mike Stevenson presented the trophy. In earlier rounds Newton had beaten Halesworth 105 - 85, Fynn Valley 89 - 82 and Hintlesham 104 - 89.

Hadleigh Cricket Club It is proving to be a tough season for the club’s senior teams so far. Both 1st and 2nd XI Saturday sides face relegation battles in their respective leagues, with Ben Wallis’s Division 1 team at the time of writing in a sequence of matches that will in all likelihood determine their fate. If no wins are registered against fellow strugglers Halstead and Braintree they will need to pull out some huge performances in the final month or so of the season. In general the side have struggled to post challenging totals and been dismissed regularly for low replies, leading to some heavy defeats. An injury to leading bowler Kyle Tanner did not help matters, but New Zealander Luke Istead has gradually found his feet, taking 21 wickets so far including a five wicket haul in the side’s best victory to date over Coggeshall. A year ago, however, the side were in similar bother, but proceeded to win 6 out of their last 7 games. There is surely runs to come from Ben Parker, Hadleigh’s Suffolk opening batsman, who will be disappointed with his return so far, and wickets from Tanner. It has been a similar story for Marc Lloyd’s 2nd team. After a couple of wins at the end of April, a long losing run was only ended in July at Needham Market, when Bloss Tampion produced the best all-round display of the season with 78 not out and 6-41. As well as breaking his finger in that game, the captain has had to deal with some bizarre call-offs, one involving an anti-Brexit march that made the player in question about as popular with his team-mates as Nigel Farage in the European Parliament. Keeping calm amid all this midsummer madness is Peter Tampion’s Sunday side, who are healthily placed in the top half of their league. Sunday July 10 was something of a momentous day – yes, not only did Andy Murray win Wimbledon, but finally, at the fourth attempt, we managed to break the curse of the Hadleigh CC Big Bash!! The covers only had to come on once, as the tournament was won by the Brettsiders with 2 wins out of 2 on the day. If the weather holds late July should have seen a flurry of T20 action at the Meadow. The senior T20 side are enjoying their evening run-outs, although usually finding our opponents are not employing the same ‘Dads Army’ approach to team selection, which is making for a few one-sided encounters. On Sunday August 28 the club holds its Vice Presidents and Sponsors Day, which will see a Chairman’s XI play the Presidents XI in a T20 match. Forthcoming match sponsors: Saturday 13 August 1st XI v Coggeshall, Match sponsored by Vyper Cricket, Match ball sponsored by The Jolly Meat Company; Saturday 27 August 1st XI v Wivenhoe, Match sponsored by Highcliff Vets.

Synergy Cafe The raffle drawn on 30th June in aid of Synergy Cafe raised £90. Many thanks for all your donated prizes and support. Please drop in to see us sometime!

2016 News from Hadleigh Tennis Club The first two club tournaments were held in May and June with the Mixed doubles being won by Jan Richards and Trevor Rowland who [remove] reached the final after a long semi final battle with Sandie Claireaux and Nick Moore. In the final they [remove] defeated Geoff Scott and Dominica Yannaghas. Sandie went one better in the Ladies doubles, winning with Linda Dhondy when they beat Liz Allen and Hayley Thorpe. Later this summer we will Mixed doubles winners, Jan and have a family tournament and the Trevor (centre) with finalists annual challenge match against Geoff and Dominica Bildeston Tennis club which first took place 135 years ago followed in September by the President’s Day which is a more relaxed half day but no less competitive. In the League competitions the Mixed doubles team, following last year’s success, have moved up a division and is facing stiff competition but are enjoying the challenge! The Ladies doubles team is also finding the opposition quite tough this year but looking to improve over the rest of the season. Through the Summer there are three club sessions of “club play” per week at the courts in Layham Sandie and Linda, winners of the Road (next to the Rugby Club Ladies doubles event pitches): Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 9.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Come along and give it a try. On the non playing side three lucky members received pairs of tickets in the LTA Wimbledon Ballot which is a benefit to Club members and in addition to the normal Public Ballot tickets. It is unclear whether they have recovered from Murray mania yet! By the time you read this the annual B-B-Q will have taken place (hopefully on a warm sunny day) and the planning is well advanced for the Christmas Dinner in mid December. Mary-Claire Tweedy is continuing her two weekly coaching sessions for juniors (beginners and improvers). Marie Claire is an LTA qualified coach and is enthusiastic about helping youngsters in the Hadleigh area to start playing tennis and the development of their skills. For more information call MaryClaire on 07946 746126 or email mctweedy@hotmail.com If you have any general queries or would like details of membership please email hadleightennis@gmail.com, or text Bryan Walls on 07714 484842

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Pouring rain dampened Hadleigh United’s opening pre-season match when Colchester United sent a young side to the Millfield. However, Hadleigh gave a good display to win by three clear goals. The next match was at Whitton where another splendid performance saw Hadleigh win by five goals to one on a very hot afternoon. Hadleigh are using young players this season and it looks to be paying dividends. The Thurlow Nunn youth team gained a two goal win against Halstead in their opening match at the Millfield of the new season. First team games for August begin with an F.A Cup match at Barkingside on Sunday 7th. On Tuesday 9th we go to Ipswich Wanderers before Kirkley come to the Millfield on Saturday 13th. On Tuesday 16th Haverhill are at the Millfield while Clacton are entertained on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon 29th. The Reserves begin their league matches in late August and fixtures were not known at the time of writing. The youths go to Walsham on Thursday 11th before the return match on Wednesday 17th. On Wednesday 24th a trip to Leiston is followed by Needham at Hadleigh on Wednesday 31st. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Rolf Beggerow and Peter Hutchings. The Ground Improvement winner was Lee Day. Both draws were made by Tony Charles at the Halstead match.

7 DAYS A WEEK......

BUDDHA RUSSELL & DEVIN

Ladies’ Captains Day at Stoke by Nayland Thursday, 14th July was the date set for the Ladies’ Captain’s Day at Stoke-by-Nayland. The day dawned bright and sunny and with no rain forecast more than 50 ladies set about a team event on the Gainsborough course. Two scores to count on par 5’s, three on par 4’s and four on par 3’s. The ladies greeted their Captain, Betty Cox, driven in her decorated buggy by Ladies ViceCaptain, Anne Hemmings, to the Ladies’ Captain, Betty Cox, with her front of the spike bar overlooking decorated buggy the two 18th greens where she was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Ladies Section Secretary, Ann Major. Betty’s chosen theme for the day was Cool Cats and Country Cottage Gardens. The ladies dressed in all things colourful with some inventive costumes worn before (and during) play. As well as Betty, several ladies had baked cakes which Betty her husband Bob and Club Captain, Ian Thompson offered to the ladies at the halfway point. Bob had also made some scrumptious punch which could be drunk either with or without any alcoholic content. At the end of the ladies golf round Betty was joined by several non-playing guests including her brother and his wife and her great niece. A Betty walking through the ladies archway total of over 70 people sat of golf clubs with her bouquet of flowers down in the Garden Room to enjoy a delicious buffet of hot chicken, cold salmon, prawns, rice, various salads and dressings followed by cheese and biscuits and/or a very popular ‘build your own’ fruit dessert of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with meringues and cream. To finish was tea or coffee and chocolate covered fondant mints. Following the meal Betty was presented with a book of photographs both past and present which all the ladies had signed with messages of goodwill and thanks for all her hard work so far. She also received a silver bracelet from the ladies as her gift. One raffle prize of a round of golf for four at Bury St Edmunds raised more than £150 for her charity, The Childrens’ Society. The prize winners were:Best Front 9, Alison Jennings, Kate Fitzgerald, Amanda Hall and Eileen Hands; Best Back 9, Mal Went, Suzanne ShawSmith, Jo Little and Mandy Byham; Nearest the Pin hole 3, Ann Thomas; Nearest the Pin hole 7 Gwen Broadhead; Nearest the Pin hole 18, Karen Lewis; Straightest Drive on First place overall winners from left, Lesley hole 13, Mandy Byham; First Munro, Susie Miler-Moore, Ladies Captain overall, Lesley Munro, Susie Betty Cox, Joan Landen and Fiz Grundy Milner-Moore, Joan Landen and Fiz Grundy; Second overall, Jane Golding, Hilary Cairns, Margaret Bentley and Sybil Paton; Third overall, Roz Clements, Gwen Broadhead, Debbie Howlett and Sue Gregory.
