ANZAC DAY HONOUR FOR HADLEIGH On April 27th Hadleigh Town Council will be co-hosting, along with the Britain-Australia Society Suffolk Branch, the 2014 ANZAC Day Commemoration Parade and Service. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and ANZAC Day - 25 April - is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War when Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition in 1915 that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Local links with the campaign are strong as the 5th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment was sent to Gallipoli to fight alongside the ANZACs and, within days of landing, fifteen Hadleigh men were killed on one day. Therefore, it is particularly fitting that this year’s commemoration will take place in Hadleigh. The 3pm service at St Mary’s, to which members of the public are invited, will be preceded by a march from the Babergh District Council car park on Bridge Street through the town led by service personnel from Wattisham Flying Station. After the service all members of the congregation are invited to tea and Anzac biscuits in the Town Hall. These sweet biscuits, popular in Australia and New Zealand, have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps as it has been claimed that they were sent by wives to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. (See page 37 for details of the day’s events)
