Exhibitor entries are in and preparing to wow the crowds with their skills on horseback, with cattle, sheep, donkeys and heavy horses all booked and looking to be an incredible display of the traditional elements of the agricultural world. Tradestands are full to capacity with something for everyone on the showground, food, clothes, gardening, shopping, local businesses and much more all there for everyone.

We have so much going on with the brilliant Stannage Stunt Display Team on hand to impress us, our brilliant machinery display, vintage machinery, gun dogs, terriers, the

Sheep Show and much more in the rings to entertain you.

We will have music and action across the showground once again this year with an all new Food in the Field eating area, a couple of changes in our ring layouts and with a happy feel our main aim for the 2024 show, there will be music and action across the show ground with something for everyone. Around the showground we have Stocks Fair back with us again, open on the Friday evening and Sunday of the show weekend, tent, education tent, art show and lots more including shopping and eating.

An historic Suffolk pub has been saved – and is once again set to become a cornerstone again of the one of the prettiest villages in the county.

We have welcomed a few new players who have come along to try our new Carpets. Some who have played before and some who are new to Carpet Bowls. Following on from my theme of how you do not need a lot of strength to play Carpet Bowls, that I mentioned in my April news from the Club. I would like to introduce you to our most senior member Jack, who was 90 in April. We had a small celebratory extended tea break from playing to mark the occasion.

Jack also plays at Preston St Mary Carpet Bowls Club and was part of the four man team than won the held once a year between the Lads and the Lassies, created by a past President Ernie.

Carpet Bowls is a game of skill, some people are naturals and pick it up straight away, and others take a while to master it. But the pleasure when you do, and the encouragement you receive from other members is exceptional. We meet every Wednesday at 2pm until 4.30pm, and Thursday evening at 7pm until 9.30pm at Lavenham Village hall. First two sessions are free.

Children in our reception class had the most amazing visit to see the lambs just before our Easter break. Not only did they get to be transported to the farm on a trailer on the back of a tractor but they also fed some of the lambs, gave them cuddles and Mrs Branton even helped to birth one of the baby lambs!! There will be a market, tours of the Deanery Tower and refreshments in the church as well. Some gardens will offer plant sales and teas, and many will allow you to bring your dog in too. They are spread all across Hadleigh, not just in the centre, and Benton Street features especially strongly this year.

The primary aim of the event is to raise funds for supports repairs and improvements to the fabric and facilities of our noble parish church, which provides so much to our whole community. The end of the Easter term brought lots of fun for our riders, searching for eggs and enjoying games on horseback. Pictured is one of our newer riders, Poppy, trying her hand at egg and spoon. Two of our lucky volunteers, Lesley and Jon, won a huge chocolate egg, kindly donated by Linden

Spring is a busy time at the stables for everyone. The volunteers who undertake maintenance around the centre have been busy tidying up and improving the paddocks. The stable volunteers have been busy trying to judge the weather and when to put on or take off the horses rugs, as well as lots of grooming to remove the

food in the winter, but survive on grass alone in the summer.

Our riders returned to start practicing for their dressage and countryside challenge competitions later in the term. Everyone takes part no matter what their ability, with help from the volunteers as needed. Rosettes and cups are awarded for the various classes at the end of term.

Spring is also the start of our Fund Raising activities. First of all we have the Fun Walk on Sunday 5 May. £5 entry, children free. Dogs on leads welcome. No need to book, just turn up at The Centre between 10am – 11 am. The walk is about 6 miles long around the beautiful Brett Valley countryside. Our next event is a stall at Hadleigh Show on Saturday, 18th May. We are Stand One, Row X, near the Countryside Ring and will be selling homemade bakes and garden plants. If anyone would like to help us by donating plants (not houseplants) and cakes (labelled with ingredients) we would be very grateful. Donations to the Centre by Friday 17 or we may be able to arrange collection if you ring us.

new season at Little Hall, Lavenham

The house now known as Little Hall was built in the fourteenth century for a family of clothiers, enlarged

glazed windows.

During the 17th and 18th centuries the house was split up and, like many others in Lavenham, fell into disrepair. At times there were up to six working families housed here.

All this changed a century ago when in 1924, twin brothers, Robert and Thomas Gayer Anderson, soldiers with an interest in art and collecting, bought the house and made it their home. The brothers named it Little Hall and art.

Little Hall is one of the few medieval hall houses that you can visit and explore. It has been open to visitors since 1974 and is run entirely by volunteers. Opening hours are 1.00pm to 4.00pm every afternoon, price just £6.00. Accompanied children have free entry.

Our next event is Little Hall Artisan Market, a selling exhibition featuring ceramics, blacksmithing, woodturning, woollen rugs and throws, willow work and much more besides.

This takes place over the late Spring Bank Holiday weekend in May. Friday 24 May to Monday 27 May 2024 inclusive. There will be free entry to the house and garden during the exhibition, but donations are always welcome. The opening hours are 11.00 am to 4.30 pm each day.

Little Hall Shop will be open as usual selling a variety of goods related to the house and the wider area of Lavenham and Suffolk. There are many bespoke items made specially for us: Wentworth jigsaws, tote bags, magnets, postcards and more. Every sale helps keep this lovely old house open for the future.

Hadleigh Society

Society on 15th May. He will explain what life was really like for Hadleigh folk during this period.

Over 800 men from the town served in the military during WWI, but some of the men turned out to be boys, including Edward Durrant who was just 13 and

with the Suffolk Regiment. Most went overseas and endured the trauma of battle on the Western Front in France and Belgium or in the Mediterranean at Gallipoli and Palestine.

A total of 120 Hadleigh men lost their lives, including Robert Keynes who was born and brought up by his grandparents in Hadleigh, emigrated to the Somme. He is remembered, not at Hadleigh, but on the massive Vimy Memorial in France.

The recent archaeological excavations at Rendlesham in Suffolk have Anglia during the 7th and 8th centuries.

If you found the results of these excavations exciting and intriguing, then here is the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating period of English history and the societies that existed at the same time, but elsewhere in England.

Just as at Rendlesham, Yeavering boasted great feasting halls and cult buildings which may have been used in religious activities similar to those found at Rendlesham. Both sites were recorded by the Venerable Bede as having been the location of Christian conversion and baptisms in the pivotal early 7th century.

All three happenings were much enjoyed by family, were very popular with delicious savoury and sweet scones complete with jam and fresh cream. Many of the batches of homemade scones were missing one as

After many anonymous mouthfuls consumed chef i.e. Jo Chisnall, Kay Whittle (Savoury Class) Gilly Dutton, Nicola Hopkins (Sweet Class) was presented with a prize and a golden wooden spoon trophy to mark their achievement. The Team was delighted, shocked and somewhat overwhelmed to discover that they had raised over £1,300 that afternoon.

The new season of concerts by Lavenham Sinfonia opened last month with a fantastic programme of English music that included a sparkling performance Cotswold Symphony, a work that has become increasingly popular thanks to Classic FM. Vincente Chavarria returned once again, he is now one of the Second concert of the season crosses the Atlantic to America and the works of Charles Ives and Aaron Copland. The concert starts at 7 pm on Sunday July 7 just 3 days after American Independence Day. The programme opens
