Hadleigh Show Donates £25,000 to Local Charities The Hadleigh Show and Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association firstly would like to thank the town and surrounding area for such wonderful support for our 2023 show. We were so lucky, having had a week of rain in the build up to the show, that on the day the sun was shining and we had such a wonderful crowd. Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association make it our aim to be able to support local charities and those who support people in agriculture and with charities close to our members hearts. These are chosen by the committee and the show director has his choice of charity for funds to be donated to post show. We are delighted, once again, to have been able to donate £25,000 to charities following the show, which was down to a huge effort by our committee and organisers, all of whom are volunteers. The Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association have donated to the following charities as a result:-

Hadleigh Elderly People's Christmas Appeal • The Porch Project, Hadleigh • Hadleigh Men’s Shed Hadleigh Rugby Club • Hadleigh Football Club • Shelley Centre for Riding for the Disabled Suffolk Young Farmers, Brett Valley, Gipping Valley and Hadleigh Young Farmers Royal Agricultural Benevolent Association • Farm Community Network The Rural Coffee Caravan • SERV - Blood Runners SARS - Suffolk Accident Rescue Service • Dementia UK • Cancer Research St Elizabeth Hospice • East Anglian Air Ambulance Once again, huge thanks to all who supported us in our return and we are already planning for 2024. Save the date as Saturday 18th May 2024 at the beautiful Holbecks Park. Tickets are on sale in Keith Avis or available via our website www.hadleighshow.co.uk

Significant documents relating to Hadleigh were shown to James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk, when he visited the town’s Guildhall to meet the Hadleigh Archive Group. These included a 1432 charter confirming the market and market rights granted in 1252 to the Lord and Lady of Toppesfield Manor. Hadleigh is unusual in that it has its own records securely stored in the town’s medieval Guildhall. The Archive Group, under the umbrella of Hadleigh Town Council, comprises a team of experienced and knowledgeable volunteers who manage the collections. The Hadleigh Archive, seen as an important part of the town’s rich heritage, is a collection of unique and valuable documents, maps and artifacts, ancient and contemporary, relating specifically to the town. The group organises, conserves and catalogues the documents, compiling a digital database. There is also a collection of over 6,000 scanned photographs of Hadleigh through the Sally Looker, lead, ages. Older documents are being Archives Group, shows transcribed and translated to make them James Cartlidge Hadleigh’s accessible. 1432 Town Charter. “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Hadleigh Town Council Archives,” commented Mr Cartlidge. “I would encourage any constituents who are interested in the history of the town to get in touch with the group directly.” The Hadleigh Archives Group can be contacted on: archives@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk

Hadleigh Evening WI In January, the Lunch Bunch met at the Belstead Brook restaurant for a much enjoyed lunch and we look forward to our February get-together at Chestnut Farm restaurant on the 8th February. We had a very good meal there last year, both generous and excellent value, especially in the carvery. Bookworms plan to be reading A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier this February after discussion in January of the two books we chose over the 2-month Christmas/New Year break - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Shaffer & Barrows and The Ladies at the Midnight Swimming Club by Faith Hogan. Five intrepid amblers had a walk around Hadleigh in January, much of which was under water. The hot drink and cake in Cobblers afterwards was very welcome. This month we will be meeting at Christchurch Park to view the snowdrops on an amble around the grounds and possible visit to the Mansion. The cafe on site will have our patronage. It may not be widely known that the Women's Institute is a strong Parliamentary lobbying organisation and each year, after much consultation with all members countrywide, the current year's lobbying subject will be chosen from well over 150 that have been submitted to the national body, whittled down to four. These relate to: access to dentists, impact of poor housing, advertising of gambling on social media and women in the criminal justice system. Every WI will make their choice and the results go to the national organisation to see which one has the majority support. We meet every third Tuesday in the Seminar Room above the Library at 7.30pm when we have a big variety of speakers and activities. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 20th February when Simon Haines (from Rosewood in Church Street) and others will be demonstrating Acoustic Folk instruments. If you would like to join us for a 'taster' contact either Glenn Abbassi the secretary on 07870 312409, or Sheila Webb the president on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you. Our very best wishes to all for 2024.

Our first meeting of 2024 was held on our new night of the third Monday of the month 15th January and was again well attended on a bitterly cold night. The speaker was Fay Jones, The Woodland Haberdasher who spoke very knowledgeably about Taxonomy (the science of classification of living and extinct organisms) a very wide ranging subject. The talk was specifically about how species of plants are categorised and then Fay went on to talk about Pines and Firs one of her speciality subjects. Fay bought along some amazing cone specimens for the audience to see and feel explaining the different types and their reproductive cycle. d iin th The Competition, “A photograph of your own garden the pastt year”” was won by Kate Banks. Members enjoyed the Raffle and there was a sale of a few plants. There was also a sale of garden books kindly donated by a non-member. Our February meeting is on Monday 19th at 7.30 in the Guild Room opposite St. Mary’s Church and our speaker will be from Walnut Tree Nursery. The subject is “Garden Trees for all Seasons”. A great opportunity to ask which tree is suitable for your own garden large or small. Why not photograph the space and bring it along for advice as a visitor – entry £4 and £2 for members. THE COMPETITION is “A bunch of hellebores”. For more information contact: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com or Tel: Angie on 07946 744457

St Mary’s Renewal A Community Project Vestry Renewal:- The Vestry open day on 19th January generated a great deal of interest. Over 80 visitors braved the cold outside to view the transformation which has taken place in this previously dark, dank little, but important, room hidden away in the corner of the church. Still small but now light, airy and above all warm, it was a pleasure for members of the Renewal Team (RT) to be present to answer any questions about the refurbishment. A photographic display of the work in progress and artefacts which came to light when the floor was dug up were also on display. The generosity of the Friends of St Mary’s enabled the vital work to be done. The Church Display:- A new display outlining St Mary’s Past, Present and Future is on show for visitors to enjoy. It also clearly demonstrates the evolution of the building from its very simple beginnings to its present-day iconic presence in the town. The renewal initiative is part of the ongoing process to meet the needs of worshippers and community. Heating and Lighting:- After much research the RT has found an affordable solution to ensure that the Church is a comfortable venue all the year round for church users. 14 beautiful heating and lighting units will adequately meet the challenge of heating and lighting this cavernous space. These attractive hanging units can be used collectively or separately as the need arises. Pledges:- The estimated cost of each unit is approximately £10,000. The challenge is now on to raise sufficient money for their acquisition and installation. The RT will be pulling out all the stops to engage as many folks as possible in its fund-raising efforts. At this stage we are looking for generous sponsors within the community to ‘pledge’ money to pay for all or part of a light. Pledge Forms and Gift Aid Declarations are available in the church or from davidhoyle1967@gmail.com. Your pledges are vital. They will not only pay for the units but also pave the way to larger, national funding opportunities. In Loving Memory:- Understandably, the first run of Bryan Haylock’s new book has sold out so Jane is having a second run printed. Whether you are familiar or not with Bryan’s quirky humour and brilliant cartoons why not enjoy a selection of both in “What Ho”? It can be purchased for £5 from the Idler and Avis Newsagents. Jane will donate the profits to the Friends of St Mary’s. Don’t miss the opportunity to remember Bryan’s unique work in this delightful publication in his memory and support the Church’s renewal initiative at the same time. Saint Valentine:- With love in the air this month, aspiring romantics will be pleased to know that, once the heating and lighting problem has been addressed, weddings will no longer be confined to the warmer months of the year. The upgraded kitchen facilities will also pave the way for in-house wedding receptions. Café Church, Pop-Up Lunchtimes and Craft Fairs:- Have you visited Café Church yet? If not, you are missing an opportunity for a warm drink, something naughty to go with it and a friendly chat with many other Hadleighites who drop in on a Friday morning. Attendance is growing at these convivial gatherings and there is the added attraction of Andrew’s famous mouthwatering all-day breakfast and delicious bacon butties. Local creative talent is on display at a monthly Craft Fair on every first Friday and that’s not the only ‘happening’. If you are looking for something to do in the middle of the week why not join the pop-up lunchtime gatherings from 2pm to 5.30pm every second and fourth Wednesday of the month? These are becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike. All activities are in addition to the quieter times for worship and prayer. Making full use of this community space will safeguard its future. The RT look forward to the day when the Church will provide a welcoming, comfortable facility for all who walk through its doors. Please do come along and support the many varied events and activities at the church. These are open to all members of the community. Alone or with family and friends, you can be sure of a warm welcome.

Mayors Monthly It’s February already, and a very belated happy new year to everybody in Hadleigh. The last time I wrote we were preparing for the Christmas event, after putting up over 55 trees on the High Street in November. The town looked fantastic on 2nd December with a huge turnout to the festive market and entertainment in the marketplace. Congratulations went to Frankie’s who won the window dressing competition this year. I volunteered (and I volunteered my wife!) to help remove the Christmas trees from the High Street in January which is always a crash back to normality and I must try to stop having so many breakfasts out (a new year’s resolution perhaps). Saying that, I enjoy spending time in our establishments on the High Street as it’s always a pleasure to see them thriving even in the winter months. Babergh District Councillors Kathryn Grandon and Jane Carruthers have been seen out surveying the businesses and users of car parks in Hadleigh to help inform decisions for responses about the potential car parking charges. Well done to them for their time and effort. January also saw the tender process completed for the rebuilding of the council’s pavilion at our grounds on Layham Road. This was done through the government appointed process and awarded mid-month. You can see the paired back designs on Babergh’s planning portal as permission was granted in October last year, this following years of work on investigating the right construction, design and needs for the teams in and around Hadleigh to be able to utilise and grow with. That was done by councillors and primary user representatives at the time with the support of the office team. The design to be built is the minimum requirements for a community building to allow clubs and the grounds to thrive and be future proof. This is a facility for all of Hadleigh and any groups needing space to congregate are encouraged to follow the build process and enquire once complete. I’d also like to thank Jane Snowdon for running her Vicar’s Wife walking tour to raise funds for SSAFA (my chosen charity for the year) on my behalf. There will be a couple more events before my term ends in May, to raise funds for this worthy cause and yes, one more quiz night will be coming! Look out for posters in here, on the noticeboards in the town centre or on the Town Council’s Facebook page for details. I’ve really enjoyed supporting SSAFA this year and was able to do so in more ways that running fundraising events. In December they hired The Guildhall for a Christmas event with Santa, and I believe that went very well on the day. Finaly I would like to thank the Babergh and Mid Suffolk public realms team for the work that they are carrying out in Hadleigh, I know that they have been hard pushed after the recent storms, but they are working hard for us even though their team is small, clearing up the river walk is no easy task, so again, Thank you. All the best Gordon.

New year, new name, new stories There has been an Open the Book Team in Hadleigh for almost ten years. We regularly go into two of our local primary schools, acting out Bible stories for assemblies. The children love our visits and often wave and loudly say “hello” to team members outside of school. The shy ones can be heard to whisper to their parents “they come into our school.” Alas the Open the Book Team is no more. There have been a few changes within the national structure and we made the decision to break away. y But just as the angels say every time they turn up in the Bible “Fear Not!” We have just reinvented ourselves and changed our name. We are now the Hadleigh Storytellers, operating under the umbrella of Hadleigh Churches Together. We are made up of people from St Mary’s, St Joseph’s, the URC and St Andrew’s in Layham. We have a new logo printed i i action ti to use when we begin to tell on our new b bags, we h have our own signing each story and maybe even more excitingly, we will sometimes write and perform our own bespoke stories written especially for our local schools. They will still be Bible based with a relevant message to fit the school values. All you have to do when you see us is remember to say “Hello Storyteller!” We promise to say hello back and look forward to sharing our stories for many years to come! Hadleigh Storytellers

Hadleigh Freemasons are pleased to support ‘Pop Up Meals’ In support of the ‘Pop Up Meals at St Mary’s Church Hadleigh,’ the Very Revd Jo Delfgou accepts a donation of £500 from the Lodge of Virtue & Silence No. 332 and £500 from Brett Valley Lodge No. 9479. The presentation took place in Hadleigh Town Hall in December, at the annual Christmas meal and carol singing event held by the Lodge of Virtue & Silence. Marylou Delfgou, Volunteer Coordinator for the Pop Ups, provided details of this community project, which is run under the auspices of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh PPC, a registered charity. It uses the St Mary’s church building free of charge. All the team involved in the Pop Up are volunteers from St Mary’s, other local churches, and from the wider community. They have made a conscious decision that L-R: Andrew Rogers and Bobby none of the Pop Up activities is Gales, representing the Lodge of religious in any way, that the volunteers Virtue and Silence, the Very Revd Jo Delfgou and Jack Clarke are not seeking to grow church representing Brett Valley Lodge membership or promote faith. The volunteers started the Pop Up meals in the summer of 2022 after concerne about the negative impact on the local community of ongoing economic challenges, rising energy costs, food poverty, as well as social isolation in the wake of the Covid Pandemic. They particularly wanted to ensure that children, especially those in receipt of free school meals, would have a free weekly meal during the School summer holidays, whilst also seeking to welcome anyone who wanted to come along. In 2023 the project was extended by offering Pop Ups on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in term time from 2pm - 5.30pm so that food and welcome could be offered to a wider age range, to family groups, to those on their own, and in need of company, including elderly people, ensuring equality of access and fostering a sense of community. The donations will be used to provide food and help cover the increasing heating and lighting costs over the winter months. Andrew Hare

‘Youth Club’ for Older Blokes Men of a certain age will remember back to their youth with great fondness. A time before the internet when the highlight of the week was the visit to your local youth club where you got up to all sorts of shenanigans with your pals, great times. But the carefree adolescent years came to an end when real life got in the way. Work, career, family, mortgage all came along and kept us busy for the next 40 years or so. Yes it was busy, but it was also a great time to be alive. Then out of the blue retirement creeps up on you. Your children have flown the nest p y now have children of their own and you’ve lost touch with your and probably old pals. The final blow is when you have to ask your six year old grandson how to set up the remote control for the TV!!! Some no doubt welcome this change of pace, but others less so. Feeling at a lost and without purpose, often bored and even lonely can all be detrimental to their health. If you, or a loved one, are in that situation then fear not, Hadleigh Men’s Shed can help. While we can’t promise to give you b k th di back the b bounding energy th thatt you once enjoyed as a teenager, we can recreate the ‘youth’ club atmosphere albeit a bit more steady and importantly we can offer friendship and camaraderie. No serious commitment is required, you can do as much or a little as you like and there is always someone to share a brew with. If you want to have a look then please feel free to pop in to any of our sessions and say hello, you will be given a warm welcome. For more info please email us at hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook.

As usual some 420 vouchers were distributed to the over 70s in Hadleigh valued again at £14 per person. The Committee decided to maintain the payment at the same rate as last year to help with the continuing financial crisis. The vouchers have been mainly funded by the Christmas Appeal which has again been successful but the Committee will also dip into the Appeal reserves to cover the total cost. The Committee would like to recognise and thank very much indeed those businesses and organisations who gave so generously. The total sum raised was a magnificent £4110.0.00 and the following contributed: Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, Franey,Rand and Pest House Charities, Aldham Common Charity, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Plant Parts Ltd., Skar Precision Mouldings Ltd, Abacus Fire and Security Ltd., Wincer Kievenaar Ltd., Frost and Partners, Dunstone Optometry, Keith Avis Printers Ltd, Andrews Butchers, Walter Wright. Recipients have expressed their grateful thanks for the vouchers which have been appreciated more than ever this Christmas. The Committee is extremely grateful to all the shops which have accepted the vouchers and to the loyal team of distributors who work so hard to deliver the vouchers personally. As always the backing of the Hadleigh Town Council is much appreciated and the Committee’s sincere thanks goes to everyone who has been involved this time. Finally, anyone who has lived in Hadleigh for six months or more, will be aged 70 this year or who has attained the age of 70 but not received a voucher previously and would like one should write, giving name, address, date of birth and time lived in Hadleigh to: David Stokes, Ravenbank, Upper Street, Layham, Ipswich IP7 5JZ.

The Cock Inn Time flies folks as we are now into February. As I write we are about to receive our first snow flurry, so hook out those snow boots and walk along to a warm log fire where a delicious pint of cask conditioned ale awaits you. We have a great beer available this month brewed locally by Cliff Quay (Earl Soham). It’s a traditional bitter and…its only £3.60 a pint, all day every day. We still have our ‘Early Bird’ drink offers too, every weekday from 12 noon to 2pm, then from 5-7pm and for those who prefer the spirits we have an all day every day ‘Double Up’ promo of selected branded spirits for only £1.50 extra. Oh and its proper quality brands, not that ‘Micky Mouse’ alternative stuff. Well pub sports certainly received a huge boost in January with the young up and coming Luke ..The Nuke…Littler making history by reaching the World Darts Championship Final at only 16 years of age. He lost the final to the World Number one Luke Humphries who walked away with £500,000 and the Sid Waddell trophy. It was exciting and has put the game of darts at the forefront. There is a very strong dart culture in the Hadleigh area with both a winter and summer league. We have three teams here at The Cock and maybe four for the next season. Melvin Tilbury runs a very successful ‘Darts for Novices’ night every Wednesday here at the pub. It starts at 8pm and it’s great fun. A number of league players started off here so who knows, there may be a few ‘Luke Littlers’ in the area!! Talking of pub sports, did you know that The Cock has a bar billiard table and a team that plays in the Sudbury District League. The table is over 100 years old and is always available to play on. The game is very different to pool, snooker or normal billiards. There are no pockets, rather there are 9 holes and each hole has a designed points value. There is one red ball and several whites. The idea is to score as many points as you can by putting the ball in the holes…but..with out knocking down the wooden pegs that sit in front of some of the holes. The red ball is worth double and the game is run on a timer. Originating from Russia before becoming a prominent game in Belgium, it has been played here in the UK since the 1930s. We hope to have a second league team in the future and to assist with this desire we are starting a beginners bar billiard night on the fourth Tuesday of each month, starting at 8pm. There will be very good players available on the night to coach you in this wonderful and exciting game, so please feel free to come along and give it a go. Welcome to the 2024 Six Nations Rugby in February with the tournament kicking off on Friday 2nd, where France will entertain Ireland. England start their campaign away at Stadio Olimpico in Rome where they will face Italy on Saturday 3rd. Dates and times are in the advert opposite. It’s an open contest this year with Wales and England having done better in France last year and Scotland and Ireland a little disappointing. Nice to see Andy Farrell being appointed as the next Lions coach. I think he will do a great job when we turn up in Australia in 2025. The footy season is well underway and past the half way stage. Ipswich are still hanging in there, but it’s tough at the top. Lots of strong teams thereabouts, so fingers crossed. I think they will secure a ‘play off’ slot, but hey let’s see. The Premiership race is rather interesting, though my dosh is still on Man City to win through. De Bruyne is back with a bang and if he stays fit it will help. Liverpool have come on strong and Arsenal always do the Arsenal thing and stutter and splutter when the going gets tough. They lack fire power in front of the sticks me thinks!! The surprises for me this season thus far have been, Spurs, West Ham, Villa and Wolves. All have over-performed and it will be interesting to see where they finish. Who’s going down...far too early to guess. The FFP issues have not yet finished and we could see more bad news for Everton, with Forest sure to suffer too. Although the F1 Grand Prix season starts on the 29 Feb, the Bahrain race will not take place until Sun 2 March at 3pm. Eyes down folks! A great month of music too so please take a look at the advert opposite. Two great bands for Saturday nights and two super vocalists. It’s a Cock debut for Dan Fraser, so please come along and give him your support. Don’t miss the Kicks either, Sat 2 March. You’ll be kicking yourself if you do!! MP’s Fair is just the job James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk will be holding a Jobs Fair on Monday the 4th of March with Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, following his successful events in Great Cornard in April 2022, and Hadleigh last year– which led to a number of uplifting real life success stories, for example, one small local employer recruited two valued members of their team as a result of the events. Last year’s event hosted more than 50 exhibitors and over 500 attendees looking for new opportunities. Many of the businesses were optimistic about taking on new employees following the event which led to multiple positive outcomes for local people and employers. “We found the event very useful and it was a good opportunity to help people understand the job opportunities. From an ‘exhibitor point of view’ I wanted to congratulate you on the organisation and engagement on the day. We were impressed with the number of companies who attended and the steady flow of people looking for employment. We look forward to future events.” – Sudbury based employer

“Our first candidate that came along, I’ve actually employed him” – Hadleigh based manufacturer, 2022

“The selection of employers, the mix of advice, jobs and colleges, apprenticeships etc, made for a wide spread of choice and options. It is something that should definitely be held more often, as I don't think people really know what is out there locally. Top marks, that's what community should be about, when is the next one?” - Attendee

“It was good to have the opportunity to find out more about local employers. We found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. It would be lovely if this event could become a yearly event.” – Attendee

We look forward to seeing you at the Fair in Sudbury on the 4th March This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his parliamentary duties. A very soggy start to 2024!

Well, we didn’t expect quite so much rain so soon after Storm Babet! But her brothers Storms Geret and Henk arrived as we welcomed in the New Year! There were three flood warnings in the first week of January and once again our River Brett overflowed its banks causing widespread flooding to Hadleigh residents, many of whom were just beginning to recover and clear up from the first floods in October.

What are you doing differently in It is not just those living along the Brett that have been affected. There is the understandable assumption that flooding is mainly caused by overflowing rivers. Our neighbours however have discovered they too are vulnerable when the ground becomes saturated. It is perhaps important to emphasise here that we can all be vulnerable to flooding. These severe weather events are becoming noticeably more frequent with the devastating effects they leave behind. Is this due to the Climate Crisis? Fortunately, we have a great community here in Hadleigh and due to a heartening response from them we have been able to set up a Hadleigh Flood Action Group. So far, we have approximately 20 volunteer flood wardens stationed along the river and in other areas in Hadleigh. They record what is happening during a flood and send the information to a central coordinator. This can then be used to inform responses needed which might include helping people to put up flood barriers, moving furniture upstairs, advising about road closures and so on. Many people in Hadleigh are naturally asking questions about ways to reduce or better still stop us from being flooded. Is this possible? Is the flooding connected to the way the Toppesfield weir gates are operated? Is it due to the build up of trees and debris in the river? Should the river be dredged? Should the weir gates be left open all winter? Is it due to the large run off from the fields that surround the river? How are we affected by other communities along the river? We are fortunate to have an advisor from the Flood and Water Management Team at Suffolk County Council who has joined our group as a resident of Hadleigh. We are hoping to set up a question-and-answer session with him. Later we hope to invite other representatives from the Risk Management Authorities including the Environmental Agency. You may be interested to look at Suffolk County Council/flooding and drainage/ Storm Babet link. Hadleigh is one of over many communities within Suffolk to have reached the criteria for an investigation by the Council. BRIAN PALFREMAN Seven years have passed but the memory of those we love remains with us always. Love Pauline and family xx

2024

Each year we are all afforded a number of different allowances by HMRC. Good planning is to use as many of these allowances as you can each year. Most of them are on a use it or lose it basis, therefore once the tax year has finished the allowances are lost if not taken advantage of. The reason the tax office limits these allowances and does not allow them to be carried forward to the next year is that they are expensive to HMRC and as such this reflects their value to each of us. You may be aware that you have an ISA allowance, this is generally £20,000 (although some specialist ones have their limitations too), but are you aware there is an annual pension allowance? This has recently been increased and as such for many people there is an opportunity to plan at levels that have not been available for many years. Making the most of your allowances is central to those who get good advice with their financial planning. If you are not doing this there maybe some significant gains to be had by doing so. Toucan Financial Services Ltd is your local expert financial advice company serving Hadleigh and the surrounding villages. To find out more contact us for a no obligation chat.

Let’s make a plan together! The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

Florists’ feasts, as the events were called, were all the rage from the end of the 17th to mid-19th century at which flowering plants were displayed in abundance and also sold. Hadleigh joined in the fashion during the mid-18th century when auriculas were the popular plant. Publican John Ward held Florists’ Feasts at the Butchers’ Arms in Church Street and then at the White Lion in High Street, where its internal courtyard would be just the place to accommodate the auriculas theatres on which plants were exhibited. ‘Pulling in the punters’ also tells how Ward attracted customers to the White Lion on other occasions: trustees and tenants of town charities held meetings in his function rooms; Cosford Petty Sessions were also held there attended by local magistrates. Ward also set up a bowling green and in the inn yard on Monday-market days, touring stallions would serve mares brought in by local farmers and other horse owners. Part 2 of ‘East House and its associated lands in George Street’ covers the period 1816 – 1904. As before, this is a timeline with short biographies of owners: Revd William Powell, John Ansell and Thomas Wilson, the latter probably being responsible for the neo-Elizabethan additions, which are shown in colour on the back cover. While Ansell was owner, a tenant Elizabeth Norman ran a ladies’ school there with twelve boarding pupils aged 9 to 18 and seven resident staff including a French governess. Further questions for you to answer are in part 5 of ‘Binkie Bacon’s Quiz of Hadleigh’ put together by Jane Richardson, which challenges your knowledge of the Iron Bridge and almshouses in George Street. Almost sixty years ago, an all consuming fire in Angel Street turned out not to be the disaster that it was first thought. ‘The fire that begun new lives for a factory and a church’ relates how Hadleigh Urban District Council came to the rescue. The destroyed building was shared by a business owned by Burt Keele and a chapel serving a very small congregation of Roman Catholics, who owned the premises. While further fund raising was necessary to add to insurance money before the planned new church was erected dedicated to St Joseph, services were held at a venue provided by the council, which also earmarked the first site on Hadleigh Industrial Estate for Keele’s new engineering works. The Hadleigh Historian is on sale price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one year subscription (6 issues plus postage) cost £32 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673)

Forest school site proposal in Pykenham Park Hadleigh About: Parkside Pre-school and HEAT have joined together, sharing their passions of educating our youngest generations to look after their surroundings, learn through the awe and wonder of the great outdoors and have a joint understanding of the positive impacts on social skills, resilience and mental wellbeing spending time outside can have. Hadleigh Community Primary School PE - On Tuesday 9 January 2024, our Year 6 football team took part in the EFL Cup at Ipswich Town Football Club. We were placed into Group A where we played matches against Rendlesham, Ilketshall St. Lawrence, Cliff Lane, Cedarwood, Sebert Wood and Edgar Seweter. After some excellent performances on the pitch from all of the players, Hadleigh finished the competition with three wins, two draws and one loss loss. This meant the team finished 2nd overall in their group. Well done Year 6 on a very cold morning, g, and thank yyou to ITFC for a wonderful event! HCPS took a small group of children to the Christmas Cracker Festival on Thursday 7 December at Inspire Suffolk Ipswich. Along with 10 other schools, the children took part in circus skills, archery, boccia, panathlon and the daily mile. All pupils put together a dance routine and performed it to the parents. Much fun was had by all, including wearing their Christmas Ch i t jjumpers and d putting tti everyone into the Christmas spirit. Do you represent a group in the Hadleigh community? Would you like to share what you do with our children? We have assemblies every Monday morning and we would love to hear from all of the wonderful associations across Hadleigh. If you're interested, please email Mr Betts (abetts@hadcps.uk) to find out more. Nursery Open Day - Saturday 16 March 2024, 10:00am – 12:30pm Hadleigh Hedgehogs Nursery are holding an Open Day on Saturday 16 March 2024 between 10.00am – 12.30pm ready for September intake 2024. We are an all-weather teacher-led nursery where children alternate their sessions between our woodland setting and our Nursery setting. The Gingerbread Man has a new home Following the success of the Gingerbread Man selfie board in the Thrift Shop last Christmas there was the unusual challenge of where he should reside for the rest of the year. There was certainly not an inch of extra space in the Thrift Shop premises. It seemed a great pity to turn him into firewood. One speedy phone call to Waterfield House and the problem bl was solved. l d W Wellbeing llb i L Lead, d Vicki Glazier, was pleased to take delivery of the endearing figure and was confident that it would be used and much enjoyed at some of their special events. Waterfield residents and staff welcome the Gingerbread Man.

Three hours free parking removed?

News from St Mary’s School

Cllr Kathryn Grandon looks at the issue of the potential removal of three hours free parking in Babergh car parks. You may have noticed me in the car parks recently, along with my Green colleagues and kind volunteers Sarah and Paul… frozen, in our high-viz jackets, clipboard in hand. We have been braving January’s arctic conditions because yet again, Babergh is planning to remove three hours free parking and we feel that it is important that free parking in Babergh remains unchanged to support the businesses in our town. The if they come into force, will affect Hadleigh, Sudbury Th changes, h and Lavenham car parks. I have been a Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh since 2011 and changing the parking fee regime has been the target every time the Government has left Babergh with a funding deficit. Admittedly, the gap is worse this year, but as a Hadleigh Councillor I believe that if our High Street should go the way of Ipswich, Colchester and other centres where increased parking charges and reduced offer makes them not worth visiting, then our wonderful town is at risk. SURVEYS We carried out two surveys: the first, of users of Babergh car parks to ask i) where they had come from, ii) whether free parking for three hours influenced their choice to visit Hadleigh, iii) would they have parked in the car park if they had to pay and iv) what would they do if only one hour parking is free. The second survey was to ask Hadleigh businesses whether they consider the loss of three hours free parking would affect their business. Every business considered three hours free parking very important to their business and nearly every business we surveyed considered that the loss of three hours free parking would very negatively impact their business. For example, EACH (the charity shop) said that the changes would affect nearly all of their volunteers as they offer three hours of their time due to the free parking period; it was also a problem for all hairdressers/barbers; Huffers were furious and even our Health Centre is concerned because it will impact the surgery car park. If parking fees were introduced, many driver respondents said they would park in the street, others said they would visit Hadleigh less frequently or stay a shorter time and only do the ‘jobs’ that they had to do and not stay longer to enjoy Hadleigh’s hospitality venues. Others said they would go elsewhere, for example, to pubs and cafes with free parking. Of course, a few said it would not affect them, but they were in the minority. School drop off/pick up would also be a problem. We have a fantastic independent High Street. It is all too easy to forget that for many of the businesses, it may take only a small change to have a negative impact on their viability. OPTIONS Unlike residents in London and other places, we do not have alternative transport offers. We have no option but to use our cars. If we live near the centre of Hadleigh we can walk or cycle, but for older people, families with children and those who do not live within walking distance, driving is the only option. I was surprised by the number of visitors to our car parks who came from Colchester and Ipswich (and beyond). They said they preferred Hadleigh and free parking was part of their reason for the visit. It has been suggested that in order to plug the deficit, if parking charges are not introduced, some staff/services will have to go. Another argument is that users should pay for the services that they use. However, there are many services we pay for that we do not personally use. Supporting the vibrancy of Babergh’s only two towns and the main tourist village should be a key objective - at the risk of stating the obvious, empty businesses do not deliver much in tax or attract residents to the area. The Babergh Cabinet meeting of 9th January 2024 confirmed that the council is using a Cabinet decision from 2021 to change the parking fee regime going forward. However, there has been a District Councillor election since then (May 2023) which returned a completely different make up of Council members and hence new Cabinet members. Those (new) Cabinet members who do not agree with changing the parking fee regime are currently being instructed that they are not allowed to vote against this in Cabinet (they can only abstain). The consultation with town and parish councils which is about to start, does not include the option of ‘no change’. WHAT CAN YOU DO? You can rest assured that your Hadleigh Babergh Councillors will be doing our best to look after our town’s interests, which you voted for us to do. The online petition (which as I write stands at nearly 3,500 signatures) will probably be closed when you read this, but there will be paper versions in our High Street shops for a little while. There will be Cabinet and Council meetings at Babergh about this parking fee matter - so make your voice heard. You can find Babergh Cabinet Members details by looking up ‘contact Babergh Cabinet Members’ - contact them, or if you wish to write to just one, you can write to the Acting Leader of the Council: John.Ward@Babergh.gov.uk

The children have continued to flourish in Forest School. It’s been so lovely to get back to the Deanery gardens now that we’ve managed to rebuild some of our activity areas after the floods. The children have been treated to some amazing activities and experiences, including fabulous fungi sightings – the children found a log with about eight different species on and they could name them all! The children listened to a story about how important the beautiful blanket of leaves under the trees are and some made a leaf wreath. We celebrated national tree week and learned about the huge value of our trees, making friends with them, climbing and swinging in them and using them to make our very own tree ornaments. Oak class heard the story of how Grandmother spider brought fire to the world. We then learnt about the things that are that where there is fire, there must also needed to light a successful fire and th be marshmallows! Elm class celebrated their last Forest School session before Christmas, by lighting a fire and enjoying some delicious s’mores! One day, when it was really raining, Oak class were given the chance to vote on whether to go to the Deanery in the rain, or stay at school in the dry. The vote was unanimous and they had a wonderful time, demonstrating just how resilient Forest School has made them all. This term, Mrs Tooke (AKA Tranquil Tooke!) officially qualified as a Level 3 Forest School Leader – congratulations and thanks for all the dedication to this adventure. Now, we’re into the spring term and we have enjoyed visits from Father Jo and the new Hadleigh Storyteller’s group. The cold hasn’t stopped the children from enjoying all the beauty that the deanery gardens have to offer in Forest School! The children have wrapped up warm, spotted snowdrops, climbed trees, and spent time cosying up in the hammocks looking for birds. We are looking forward to NSPCC Number Day soon, when the children will do lots of fun maths activities and take part in ‘Dress Up for Digits’. We are looking forward to lots of exciting learning experiences in 2024!

Elmsett and Aldham Community Indoor Market Firstly can I thank everyone who has supported me over the last 10 months to enable the Indoor Market to run smoothly, and to those who came to enjoy the fabulous home-made refreshments provided by: St Peter’s Church, Whatfield School, Semer Church, Elmsett ECO group, Wattisham Military Wives Choir and Elmsett School PTA - raising funds for their own projects around the area. Thanks also to those who h have recycled l d and d refilled fill d with ith us, and bought goods from our very talented hand crafters. I do hope you have enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere that was created and for caring about your community. Over the year, the monies collected on the community plant, produce, and recycle craft stalls totalled £314.58 and this money went directly to the hospice head office via the lovely ladies on the St Elizabeth Hospice stall. The difference between the income from stall holders and the costs of the hall and advertising totalled £700 and this was donated online to the hospice before Christmas (plus gift aid). The week I sent it off there was an offer from local Ipswich businesses to match any donations made, so £1,575.00 went to an amazing cause, very close to my family’s hearts and many others who benefit from the hospice’s wonderful care. I would also like to thank the Wattisham Military Wives Choir who gave up their time to come and sing for us, and get us into the festive spirit. Beautiful singing ladies. I am planning for the community Indoor Markets to continue on the second Saturday of each month in some shape or form. This year any monies made will be given to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) – another much valued and crucial charity needing support. March 2024 with a full market, refreshments, We will be back on Saturday 9th M refills and recycling. Mothering Sunday and Easter cards and gifts will be a focus. The other 2024 dates for your diary will be: 13th April, 11th May, 8th June, 13th July, 10th August, 14th September, 12th October, 9th November, 14th December. Although we have beautiful crafts made by very talented local crafters, it was felt that we should scale the crafters markets down to every other month. In the interim months we will still provide community refreshments and a warm meeting place, with just a few stalls more focused on food and refills, and of course the recycling. I have already had a request to run a plant stall too which is wonderful, but if anyone has any contacts for food stalls, please get in touch. I am also looking for groups or individuals to run the refreshments (profits to their own charity) or indeed have a craft stall on the bigger markets. Please contact me on 07712424901 or email me on King4kings@aol.com if you would like to help in any way. Please, if you are a supporter of your community, spread the word and encourage others to come along. Jan King

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Report Suffolk’s Proposed Budget 2024/25 - In the November 2023 edition of HCN, I wrote that Suffolk’s budget has been hit by unforecastable costs. Although we have consistently lobbied for more funding in Suffolk, the recent Government council funding package to support councils in England was lower than expected. This k presents more challenges than we, and many other County Councils, expected meaning difficult decisions are needed. Last month I took part the Conservative Group budget workshops to discuss and decide how we would balance the books. There were several cost saving proposals which I am relieved that we managed to avoid, including: Post-16 Transport support; Trading Standards Lorry watch co-ordinator; and closure of [Hadleigh’s] Household Waste Recycling Centres. In the next two years, SCC will need to pump almost £74 million extra into protecting the county’s most vulnerable residents including an additional £42.7 million for children’s services and £29.9 million for adult care. The council has been hit hard by inflation and rising demand for services such as children’s care, SEND and home to school transport. It means having to make difficult decisions about the services provided, including £64.7 million of savings in 2024/25 and 2025/26. Also, £15.9 million of reserves will be used to balance next year’s budget. The proposals would give the council a budget of around £752 million for 2024/25, made up of funding coming from Government, business rates, charges for services and Council Tax. The proposed budget would require a 4.99% increase in council tax in next year. This would be made up of a 2.99% increase in general council tax and a 2% increase dedicated to funding adult care. This means the costs for a Band B property household, the most common in Suffolk, would be: £23.50 per week (£1.12 per week increase from 2023/24). This proposed budget will go before the full council to decide on 15th February. DEFRA Property Flood Resilience Grant - I can only imagine the stress of property owners affected by flooding caused by recent storms especially last year’s Storm Babet, probably the worst flood event in Suffolk since 1953. There is grant funding support to homes and businesses that experienced internal flooding between 19th – 25th October. The Government uses the Flood Recovery Framework to make funding available to communities following specific storm events that result in severe flooding. Residents and business owners may have already received an initial grant payment and notification of Council Tax/Business Rate discounts. An additional element of this framework is the Property Flood Resilience (PFR) Grant which the Government requires SCC to administer on their behalf. Those who have experienced internal flooding to the living area of their property are likely to be eligible to apply for this support. Eligible property owners (both domestic and commercial) receive a grant up to £5,000 to fund measures that make their property more resilient to future flooding. Following initial eligibility checks with the Council, property owners will be responsible for sourcing an independent surveyor and PFR contractor. Further information into the grant eligibility, conditions and the forthcoming application process can be found Suffolk’s website. Armed Forces Motion to Council - At the last meeting of the council (7th December 2023) I had the privilege of proposing the following motion to the full Suffolk County Council: ‘Suffolk County Council is proud to reaffirm our support for our Armed Forces communities and military bases in Suffolk. In this period following Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, we would like to pay special tribute and thank all those who have served, or continue to serve, in our military. Furthermore, this council extends its gratitude to our allies from the United States of America stationed at U.S. Air Force bases in our county. We endeavour to uphold our long and noble tradition of military presence in Suffolk and the communities which surround it. In March 2022, Suffolk County Council unanimously passed a motion condemning Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. We recognise the importance of maintaining our military troops and bases across Suffolk and their strategic significance in the face of emerging global threats. Wherever possible, we will champion and support the current size and nature of military forces and bases here in Suffolk. The Council places on record its support for His Majesty’s Government’s £10m to support the Veterans Places, Pathways and People Programme and the aspiration to commit at least 2.5% of GDP to Defence spending. I am glad that the majority of councillors supported this motion. Stone Street 30mph Speed Restrictions - I am grateful that the Town Council has agreed to match-fund 50% of the cost of the Stone Street speed reduction (40mph to 30mph) from their CIL funds (overall estimate of £7200 £8790). I will fund the remainder of this project from my Local Highways Budget. SCC intends to carry out these works alongside the adjacent proposal (in Cosford division) for a speed reduction (60mph to 40mph) of the A1141 from

the present national speed limit sign on Stone Street to Union Hill in Semer. Road Sign £3k budget - I have been awarded additional capital funding uplift of £3,000.00 to be added to my Local Highways Budget, but specifically to be spent on improving road signs. I would be grateful if you would let me know of any round or triangular signs (warning and statutory), or direction signs that require replacing or maintenance. I can then apply to SCC to have these serviced as appropriate, but I will need to commit this additional monies to be spent by 31st August 2024. Councillor Surgery - I endeavour to hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next one at 11:00 on Saturday 17th February 2024 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Time for Action on Climate Change This year looks like it will be another year of unpredictable and extreme weather here and around the world. The climate crisis will continue to cause global political instability and humanitarian disasters and doubtless there will be a lot of ‘hot air’ as the general election draws near. 2024 will be a busy year for HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team). We will continue to protect nature through our volunteer work; Green Highway, Bat Group and River Project. At the same time, we are launching a new programme focused on climate change that aims to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel energy and cut back carbon emissions. There will be a series of events throughout the year. • We are starting by getting out and about to find out what the people of Hadleigh want to do about climate change. This begins with a HEAT Climate ‘Question Time’ with a panel of experts to answer any questions you have on what we can do about climate change as individuals and as a community, how to be more energy efficient and use more renewables. Come along on Wednesday 28 February at 1900 at the Hadleigh Baptist Church on George St. • Our Climate café has met 3 times and is giving people a safe space to share and discuss climate change and its impact. The next session will be on Thursday 22 February from 1400-1530 at the Hadleigh Baptist Church on George St. • In March we will hold a Showcase Event to share what other local community groups are doing to reduce their climate impacts and hopefully to inspire us to action in Hadleigh. • In April, we will launch a Green Energy campaign building on what we have learnt and kickstarting a practical community energy project. If you want to get involved of find out more about any of the above please email us at hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com or visit our website https://www.hadleighheat.org

Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 10 January 2024 • District Council In response to a comment that pylons should be located under the sea, Cllr Ward said National Grid was looking at pylons on a project-by-project basis rather than taking an holistic approach; it should be possible to have a coordinated grid, but speed and cost were their main concerns. It was the Secretary of State, not local planning authorities, that would make the decisions; local MPs were doing their best, but not making much headway. Cllr Ward confirmed that financial aid for flood affected properties following the recent storms was still available. The consultation on Part Two of the Local Plan – the ‘call for sites’ - had started and would continue for four weeks. With regard to Babergh’s proposal to introduce car parking charges, Cabinet had agreed to discuss tariffs; it was likely that the charge would be £1 for three hours in Hadleigh. Cllr Ward said it was vital that Babergh was able to balance its budget. Cllr Laing said the survey commissioned by Babergh and Mid Suffolk had made various proposals; however, Cllr Ward said there was currently no funding to implement them. He confirmed that residents’ permits were already available in Sudbury and Hadleigh. • County Council With regard to funding to the arts and museums being cut, Cllr Hall said the announcement had been made now as the council was required to give 12 months’ notice. The cuts were necessary to allow adult social care to be funded, which was compulsory. Cabinet had approved an extra £10 million to repair and resurface local roads in villages and areas across Suffolk. The funding would nearly double Suffolk Highways’ £11 million annual road maintenance budget, but would be targeted at smaller residential streets. • Gigaclear The Clerk was in touch with Gigaclear concerning the cabinet in Upper Layham; they had assured her that they ‘always liaise with parish councils and residents over the location of cabinets’ – she had pointed out that this had not been the case in Layham and was awaiting a further response. She confirmed that she had also asked James Cartlidge MP to intervene. • Finance Following the purchase of a new dog bin for the Playing Field, the Clerk said the other bin and the one outside the Village Hall should also be replaced as they were in a poor state; it was agreed that she should order two new bins. The Clerk had updated the budget for 2024/25 to take into account a CIL payment due in April, and increased charges for emptying litter and dog bins.

Social Club February February 5 - Margaret Woods, local historian and author, will give a talk entitled ‘Medieval Hadleigh’. Discover the absorbing history of our town from an expert. February 19 - Chris Coe, local artist, will lead an art activity suitable for all. We anticipate lots of laughter! We meet at Layham Village Hall between 10 am and 12 pm. All welcome. A small charge of £2 covers refreshments and hire of the hall. •

Speeding It was agreed that two solar panels should be purchased so the existing SID could be modified as soon as possible and could continue to be moved regularly until an additional device was purchased in the new financial year.

Village Spring Clean This will take place on Saturday 23 March. More details next month.

Social Club January In our first meeting of 2024 we were privileged to be the first group that author, Sarah Nicholson spoke to about her autobiography, ‘In Search of Lost Glitter’. Sarah’s moving and inspirational account, interspersed with excerpts traced the path of her writing following the sudden death of her husband, thirteen years ago. Tragedy and humour were combined with Sarah’s passion for writing, partly as a means of making sense of it all. Her honest and frank hundred-word stories and poems held us enthralled. Many of us were inspired to write our own autobiographical accounts. Sarah’s book, ‘In Search of Lost Glitter’ can be obtained online from Amazon or from ‘The Little Ginger Bee Company’ Hadleigh.

Car Parking - All three Babergh District Councillors have been working together to gather the views of car park users and High Street businesses on the proposed car park charges in Babergh. We have been surveying the opinions of both groups using questionnaires so that we have a better understanding of how people feel about these proposals. So far, we have spent two very cold mornings speaking to car park users and have visited most of the businesses on the High Street. We will also Jane Caruthers be asking market traders to take part in our survey. EV Charging Points - New electric vehicle charging points are going to be installed in Hadleigh. There will be eight new points in both the Stonehouse Road and Barclays (High St.) car parks with work beginning on 29th January hoping to be completed by 1st March. Maiden Way car park will receive six new EV charging points with work commencing on 5th February lasting until 15th March. This will significantly boost the number of EV charging points in the town ensuring we can meet the Simon Dowling demand for the future growth of electric vehicles. It will also provide charging points for residents who are unable to charge their vehicles at home. Locality Awards - We are planning to use the remainder of our allocated Locality Awards to help fund a minibus for the Hadleigh Sea Scouts. We will be receiving our 2024/25 allocation of Locality Awards in April. Please get in touch if your project needs financial support. Empty Homes Premium - Babergh District Council (BDC) cabinet have approved an empty homes and second homes premiums policy, following the introduction of new government rules. With almost 600 homes standing empty in Babergh the council is keen to bring them back into use to help meet growing housing need. Under the new policy, properties left empty for a year or more will pay double the council tax, with a premium of up to 100% from April 2024; properties empty for five years or more will see their council tax bills treble with a premium of up to 200%; and owners of properties left empty for 10 years will be facing quadrupled bills, with a premium of up to 300%. Council tax will double for the owners of the 576 second homes in Babergh from April 2025. The definition of a second home for council tax purposes is a property in which there is ‘no one resident’ but that is ‘substantially furnished’. There will be exceptions, in line with Government policy, including properties being actively marketed for sale or rent for a limited period, houses going through probate, caravan pitches and houseboat moorings. It is estimated that the policy for empty homes premiums could generate an extra £300k in council tax in Babergh next year, with the premium for second homeowners in 2025 netting an additional £1.1m. However, Babergh only keep a fraction of the council tax they collect. For every £1 collected Babergh only get to keep 8p, with the bulk of the money going towards the cost of services provided by Suffolk County Council and the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner. Cabinet member for housing at Babergh District Council, Cllr Jessie Carter said: “It’s unacceptable that houses are standing empty without valid reason. Each empty property is a potential home, and we must encourage owners to bring them back into use to help relieve the pressure on existing housing stock. We want to put more homes back on the market – and ensure that those who choose to own second homes make a higher contribution to local services at a time when they are under pressure.” XL Bully dogs - As from 1st February no new dogs of this breed will be allowed in BDC properties following government legislation to ban them. Existing tenants who currently own this breed may continue to keep their pets so long as they comply with the law and have the necessary exemption certificate. This link provides more information on what you should do if you have a pet XL Bully dog https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prepare-for-the-ban-onxl-bully-dogs Tenants also need to inform BDC if they have an XL Bully so that necessary measures are in place for the safety of other council residents, staff and contractors. Fuel Support Information - Information regarding energy bills, how to reduce energy use and what to do if you are unable to heat your home are available on the Babergh District Council website: https://www.babergh.gov.uk/web/babergh/energy-fuel-and-utilities. Rotary Review CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS – A RECORD YEAR: Hadleigh’s very own Father Christmas set out with his shiny, newly refurbished float and high expectations. He was not disappointed. Hadleigh residents, especially the children, welcomed him enthusiastically and with great generosity. Rotary extends a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated. The House to House brought in £1,563.59, two days at Morrisons’ Store produced £589.23 with donations of £159.00 topping the final total up to £2,311.82. A record result and all monies will go to local charities with an emphasis on those assisting with the winter financial crisis - Just Food Hadleigh and Surviving Winter in Hadleigh. Donations are also going to Hadleigh Elderly People’s Welfare Committee and the Ansell Centre Memories cafe. Further donations will be announced in the coming g months. Of course this event does not just happen and as Hadleigh Rotary Club is so small it does rely on a number of Friends of Rotary to help with the collections and members would like to recognise and thank profusely the following: Firstly, Steve Grimsey donned the red robes and beard throughout the collection period. Everyone loved you Steve! Towing duties, once again, were shared Hambling, Steve Blake h d by b Gary G H bli St Bl k and d Graham Parker [Club President] whilst collectors were Harry Wilkinson, Claire Coster, Simon and Kerry Carter, Ron Jenkins, Vicki Pannell, Sam Woodward and John Williamson assisted by members Glenn Abbassi, Ian Burne, Sue Clark and our President. Many, many thanks to all of you! Finally the Club is grateful to Robert Finch and Plant Parts Ltd for housing the float during the collecting period, to Martin Pratt and family for keeping the float at their farm for the rest of the year and to Press Gang for ensuring that the Santa outfit is in pristine condition for next Christmas. CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: 1. Members, partners and friends celebrated Christmas 2023 with a lunch at Hintlesham Golf Club. This was a very enjoyable occasion and thanks go to the staff for looking after us so well. 2. A Christmas coffee morning took place at the home of the Club President. There were mince pies and cake to go with the coffee and again everyone enjoyed themselves – many thanks Graham and Jo for hosting this. 3. Moving on to the New Year, the Club’s traditional Champagne Brunch took place at The George Hintlesham. Again, members and partners enjoyed the hospitality of The George and thanks go to all the staff. FUTURE PLANS: It is hoped to hold more events this year but it will depend on how much help the Club can find to supplement the small membership. Of course it would be great if help turned in to new membership especially as one of our longstanding members has had to resign through ill health. The Club is very sorry to lose Hazel Cooley who has been a loyal and hardworking member for a number of years. We will miss you, Hazel. The Club has settled at Cobblers and meets on 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month for lunch 12.45pm for 1pm. A coffee morning is held once a month also at Cobblers usually on the 1st Tuesday at 11am. If you would like to attend one of these or find out more about your local Rotary Club please contact David 01473 827226. Members wish all readers a Very Happy New Year.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The winter months bring unpredictable weather which makes caring for our ponies challenging. It also means we can’t always use them for our Riding for the Disabled (RDA) sessions. Rarely are sessions cancelled – because I’m here to be used. I’m Ebony, the mechanical horse, situated in a warm room out of the weather. The physical therapy I give is as good as being on one of my real-life friends, and I can provide a variety of paces – walk, trot and canter. But RDA is much more than exercising the body. Our attitude is to get our clients to access and enjoy riding and engaging with the horses to the maximum of their ability. The photo shows Lesley, who uses me to help her recover from a dreadful fall off her own horse. Across the UK over 25,000 people of all ages and abilities ride or carriage drive with one of the 500 RDA groups. And did you know, there are similar groups right across world? At every group, our coaches are trained and qualified to deliver the best possible experience, based on our clients’ needs, ambition or therapeutic goals. Our clients include children and adults with physical and learning disabilities and autism. The difference that riding and being with the horses makes is amazing and often lifechanging. As well as our amazing riders, coaches and stable manager, the Shelley Centre is blessed with many dedicated and hard-working volunteers. They help with the RDA sessions; look after and exercise the ponies during the holidays and weekends; undertake general admin and maintenance tasks around the yard and raise funds to keep the Centre going. If you’d like to join this fantastic and friendly team, why not give the Centre a call and come up and meet us and see how you can help. And of course, you can always help by supporting our fund raising activities or giving us a donation. Please see our website for details. Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

Dear Sir, I couldn’t agree more with Graeme Jones about solutions to the River Brett flooding. If the river were allowed to return to its natural course, by keeping sluice gates open, and adopting a ‘managed’ approach of its flood plain, many householders in Hadleigh would be able to sleep more easily overnight. However, there would also be major benefits for wildlife and its diversity, as the river’s natural course would allow a variety of habitats for river creatures and waterside plants. This would contrast with our current approach, with a buildup of green pondweed forming a scum on the water, which reduces oxygen levels, which harms all river life. I know that the Environment Agency are in favour of this re-wilding approach, which would certainly benefit all wildlife, but this has been opposed by some river users, who refuse change, as it would affect their ‘sport’. I think it would be helpful if we view this problem as a worldwide one, because it’s clear that the climate catastrophe is going to create more regular extreme weather events in the future, and we should plan accordingly. There are certainly hurdles to overcome for the newly-formed ‘flood action’ groups, but it’s time we consigned selfish interests to the dustbin, and take overdue action urgently, as there is no time to waste. G McKissock

Dear Sir, I am writing to highlight an incident that happened a few weeks ago that has been brought to the attention of the Hadleigh Flood Action Group. It would appear that on the eve of Storm Henk a member of the public was very abusive to an employee of the Environment Agency who was attending the weir gates in Tinkers Lane. I appreciate that emotions might have been running high that evening, myself and my neighbours were all pretty stressed watching the river levels rise, however this does not excuse this person’s behaviour. We have been advised by the Environment Agency that should there be a repeat incident of this kind they could flag up Tinkers Lane as a contentious site which would mean that they would not send staff out to operate the gates in the future. If any readers do have concerns regarding the management of the River Brett in Hadleigh please either contact the EA directly through the appropriate channels and or contact Hadleigh Flood Action Group. “Cut the coat according to the cloth.” At the Hadleigh Town Council meeting on 18th Thursday January 2024, under the chairmanship of Deputy Mayor Cllr. Wilson, Councillors were given free rein to express their views on the budget for 2024/25. Two of the most financially numerate Councillors did so. They expressed great concern that the HTC was living beyond its means. They suggested that the depletion of the reserves to a dangerously low level was unacceptable. The Town Clerk was instructed to review the latest budget figures taking into account the recommended savings suggested by Councillors. The recent two Extraordinary Council Meetings held in camera, excluding the public, have discussed seeking a further loan from the Public Works Loan Board for a substantial sports pavilion costing nearly £1,000,000. This is likely to raise the Council Tax at a time when most personal budgets are under pressure. In 2018 a cabal of Councillors voted to borrow £500,000 to extend the cemetery. They did so without seeking a professional survey to establish the need. Normally a business plan is required by the PWLB. This was avoided, with the backing of the Suffolk Association of Local Councils, by claiming the borrowing would have no impact on the Council Tax paid by residents. This was clearly untrue. An annual payment of over £30,000 pa, with no commensurate income, was bound to eventually affect the precept and deplete the reserves. As a result, since 2018 the HTC Council Tax has exceeded the growth of the Babergh DC Council Tax by over 30%. Is history repeating itself at the expense of Council Tax payers? Roger Young

Surprise New Year gift for SESAW Octogenarian author Frank Payne was completely surprised by SeSaws unexpected New Year's message. They had received a magnificent gift of £1000 from a Kentish based couple. Originally, George had purchased “Hear Today Goon Tomorrow” and “Well Worth Waiting For”. He also placed an order for the third, It All Kicks Off On Sunday. He, like many readers who, thanks to a string of Publisher delays, paid when the third book arrived in Christmas week. His magnificent reaction was to send his gift of £1000 direct to SeSaw. When told, I was truly gob-smacked. But there is a further quirk of fate. George and his wife live in a small village in Longfield Kent. In 1958, Pat and I married. We had our first son there. We bought a bungalow there. In a new development called Hart Shaw. In my job, I was travelling a lot. In our third year we were troubled by a ‘Peeping Tom’. While I was away Pat was in the bath with the window on the latch. A hand slowly and quietly opened the window and stood, face masked, just staring. She was terrified. We sold up and moved to Essex. Where was Hart Shaw? In Longfield Kent, believe it or not.

Climate Cafés come to Hadleigh! Are you concerned about climate change? Do you feel anxious, or overwhelmed when you think about it? We have noticed that it can be difficult to talk about climate change with friends and family. Climate cafes provide a supportive space in which to talk about how the climate crisis is affecting us with no judgement and without the pressure to act. The idea behind climate cafes is that talking about climate change is really important but it is often made more difficult by our feelings of guilt that we are not doing enough, or frustration that others are not doing enough. We provide a hot drink and cake and facilitate the discussion. You do not have to speak if this is not comfortable for you. Cafes currently run monthly on alternate Thursday and Saturday afternoons From 2 - 3.30pm. Our next cafés are on Thursday 22nd February 2024 & Saturday 23rd March and Thursday 18th April at Hadleigh Baptist Church George Street, IP7 5BE. With grateful thanks to the Baptist Church for offering us their community room. For further details contact: Paul Hodgkin 07946463698 Lindsay Panton 07769863633 / Sarah Jones 07702454491

Hadleigh Community Forum Tuesday 9 January 2024 1 WELCOME: The Chair welcomed everyone 2 REPORT OF THE LAST MEETING: Accepted 3 MATTERS ARISING: None 4 STANDARD UPDATES 4.1 HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL (HTC) The draft Neighbourhood Plan is being considered and, following consultation responses, will be published on HTC’s website in due course. The Christmas event was a great success and very well attended despite extremely cold weather. The new grants budget – expected to be £20,000 - will commence 1 April. Car parking charges in Babergh are on the agenda today at Cabinet which will include discussion on consultation with town and parish councils about introducing charges in Hadleigh. HTC await more information from BDC and hope to have a fully informed discussion to agree their viewpoint at their full council meeting on 15 February. A Comedy Night (27 Jan, £13 via Eventbrite) is planned to raise funds towards the upkeep of the Guildhall and dates for tours of the Guildhall in 2024 are on www.hadleightownhall.co.uk. 4.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL (BDC) Car parking is high on the agenda. There will be a short (four or five questions) questionnaire (500 copies) professionally created & approved and conducted by the councillors themselves (and paid for by them personally) for users of the BDC car parks at Magdalen Road, Toppesfield (by the health centre) and the High Street (the old “Barclays” car park). Respondents will be chosen at random and asked to answer on the spot – not take away the questionnaires. There is an online petition which has over 3,000 signatures. Consultations need to take place concerning non-BDC car parks and potential on-street parking. It should be noted that it was agreed in 2021 that parking charges would be levied in Hadleigh but the start date was deferred due to covid. It is likely they will come into force in the last quarter of 2024. HCF fully support the councillors undertaking the survey. EV (electric vehicle) charging points will be increased in Hadleigh and installed at the High Street (29 Jan), Stonehouse Road (29 Jan) and Maiden Way (5 Feb) car parks. All works will be completed by 15 March. A question was raised as to whether EVs will be charged for parking as well as actually charging their cars. SCC has some funding left in its locality budget for community projects over

£250. Applications should be made by mid-March. 4.3 VISIT HADLEIGH The Christmas walk, “Meet the Rector’s Wife 1844” was successfully sold out, raising £100 for the Mayor’s Charity, SSAFA. 4.4 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) A full report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News. Four of the staff will be running the London Marathon in April – to sponsor them, go to Just Giving: Team Hadleigh. 4.5 ST MARYS CHURCH The new CCTV system is up and running. The new heat/light system is progressing but not with the original company. The chandeliers are essentially the same but with a slightly different, more elegant, design. The beautiful new vestry is complete and we are in the process of moving everything into it before dismantling the old wooden structure that is currently used as a temporary vestry (the faculty for which has been approved). The brand new, upgraded sound system is being installed and should be completed by the end of January. St Mary’s was very busy over Christmas with well-attended services for all ages. The ever-popular Variety Show raised over £1200. Café Church continues every Friday and the popular Craft Market starts again on 2 February. The police, PC Johnson, will have an information station, available to chat to everyone, at three craft markets in 2024 – 1 March, 5 July and 6 September. PC Johnson also hopes to pop into Café Church as and when duties allow. There will be a sponsored sleepover (there will be no heat on!) for over 18s in church on Friday night, 26 January to raise money for SHELTER. For information packs, and to register, contact Emma at the Deanery Tower office. Breakfast will be provided on Saturday morning. Pop-Ups continue on the 2nd and 4th Weds from 12 – 2pm in term time. Diary Dates: Sat 20 July, Deanery Fete, Dog Show and BBQ. Sat 19 October, Last Night of the Proms. 4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) HEAT is working closely with the Flood Action Group assisting in mitigating flood risk and continuing their work to improve the quality of the Brett. Nine traditional Suffolk fruit trees (mainly small- and medium-sized apple and pear trees) have been planted in the grass margins of the green corridor between Calais Street and Aldham Road, in co-operation with BDC. The next Climate Café is on 20 January from 2-4pm in the Baptist church. Volunteering continues at Benton End and Dairy Farm (Semer) on alternate Wednesdays. Dairy Farm assistance includes the removal of ants’ nests, removing the safety collars from saplings that have grown to a sufficient size

and clearing some of the 85 ponds on the estate. All this work is vital in cementing good relationships with farmers. For more details about any activities, contact hadleighheat@hotmail.com 4.7 BENTON END Thanks to BDC for a locality grant for some new catering items Contact matthew@bentonend.co.uk to enquire about/organise visits/tours for a per-person donation. Work is progressing in Willowbrook (next door) with some decoration and inspection of electrics. It is hoped to have a tenant in there in the spring. The Coach House is having a make-over to bring it up to Air B&B standards. A Monterey Pine was toppled during Storm Henk which damaged the upper wall of the walled garden. It is hoped insurance will cover this. When the weather improves, it is hoped to hold a Volunteers Day to offer information and encourage new volunteers. Discussions are underway to reinstate the Dedham Hopper Bus with planned stops at Benton & Hadleigh and connecting local villages. This would also need to have a commercial value. 5 AOB Any items for AOB should be notified to Jess Janas (jessicanevard@btinternet.com ) or the Chairman BEFORE the meeting please. 5.1 Hadleigh Flood Action Group: A Constitution has now been written which, when ratified at the next meeting on 1 February, will allow applications for funding. Flood wardens and a system of reporting has been adopted and it is hoped will support the Section 19 Investigation. There is free online training for flood wardens. Assistance and advice has come from a Hadleigh resident who is happy to give a talk (to be arranged) explaining how the different agencies all work together and their roles re water management. HEAT and HFAG are in discussions about working more closely together. HTC will be discussing the updated Emergency Plan and, once agreed, will work with HFAG to integrate them into the Plan. On a rather sour note, an Environment Agency worker, who had come to raise the flood gates near the football club was badly verbally abused, leaving him very distressed. The only reason he did not contact the police was he did not want Hadleigh to be blacklisted from Agency help with flood work. HCF and HFAG were clear to confirm their unwavering support for the Environment Agency and their assistance. The meeting closed at 5.32 NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 13 February 2024 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Chair: Jane Snowdon

What will that Chihuahua say next? Kenneth believes he, and all the contributors to this excellent magazine, are time travellers because their articles are read by you in the future. His beguiling manner actually threw me for a moment until I snapped out of it! He’s obviously been watching too much television. Mind you, visitors have compared us to Dr. Who’s Tardis, surprised by the size of SESAW. There are many animals awaiting rehoming including g a five month old black and white cat named Paddington. We believe she was callously thrown over a garden wall and left to die when seriously ill with flu. Fortunately she was made of sterner stuff than expected. The householder found her and brought her to SESAW where she spent two weeks beside a radiator, being nursed, medicated and fed (my) best food. I didn’t really mind sharing my rations and glad to see her now fit and ready for a new, loving home. Please come and meet Paddington if you are the human she needs, or you are looking for a pet to share your life. There are also dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs at SESAW which is open to visitors h iinside id again, 10am to 1pm Thursday to Sunday. It may not b be bi bigger on the but whether you are a sci-fi fan or not, there is plenty to read on our bookcase at the gate, from Mary Shelley to Mary Berry! You may even pick up something interesting from our bric-a-brac table or be greeted by one of the resident animals. Yes, that’s me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Supporting Wounded Veterans Supporting Wounded Veterans is a charity dedicated to delivering independence to UK Veterans through groundbreaking physical and psychological care. Founded in 2012, Supporting Wounded Veterans provide six comprehensive pathways including sporting events, mentoring, pain management and employment to enable former UK servicemen cemen and women, women physically or mentally wounded, to move forward from rehabilitation to employment. In March this year, I will be taking part in the 2024 Sports Habilitation Ski Week, offering a transformative break to help veterans start a new phase in the transition to civilian life and a relationship with the charity as well as kickg the recovery yp starting process. I will be joining the SWV team as a Ski Buddy, supporting the veterans throughout the week both on and off the slopes. This is no holiday, the week will be mentally as well as physically challenging; for some of the veterans, this week is the biggest challenge that they have faced i th i iinitial iti l di i or injury. i j th since their diagnosis I am there to be helping and supporting y a veteran on a crucial part of their journey to recovery. As well as skiing with qualified adaptive ski instructors, the trip provides the chance to discuss pain management needs and career interests with SWV’s coordinators. This ensures every veteran can receive further support and bespoke mentoring following the trip. There is also a valuable opportunity to share experiences with other wounded veterans. d sports medicine di i Medical professionals are on hand, including a GP and specialist, a physiotherapist, an osteopath, a sports masseur, and a psychologist. In addition to medical clinics, there are evening sessions in Relaxation, Mindfulness and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). To donate, please either visit my Just Giving page (by searching for Tom HOWELL) or alternatively please scan the QR Code which will take you straight to the page. Thank you so much in advance for helping support a wonderful charity that really makes a meaningful difference to the lives of veterans. Every donation counts, now matter Tom how big or small. Ukraine Aid Update I returned from my 11th trip to Ukraine, on 16 January ‘24, the journey having been delayed due to car preparation requirements and then very severe weather just before Christmas. In October ‘23, I mentioned the intended purchase, in Ukraine, of a new car carrying road trailer, which I have now directly seen in action! The large generator requested did not materialise from Suffolk but a new request, for a dialysis machine was received (from a military hospital). Within 9 days the exact model required had been located, technically approved and funds raised! But the requesting hospital no longer required it as they had been able to source four machines, so it was purchased by British Ukrainian Aid (who remain an active support for me) and redirected to another hospital. With donors’ ready agreement, the funds were used for my latest trip, transport and specialist supplies costs. I have also been able to take a fourth ‘John Grose’ free loaned Luton van load of living aids continually donated from ‘Medequip’ to the Ukrainian warehouse in London. This mission I was fortunately accompanied by Viktor, a Ukrainian man, as co-driver from the UK to his home town of Kyiv. Very grateful for his experience of negotiating the snow and ice covered country roads! I then completed the remaining cross country deliveries, of the car and supplies, alone, rested a couple of days and then handed over the frontline prepared car the mechanics had worked their long h hours of magic on! It is always a long slow journey home via various means, but satisfying to know the deliveries achieved and all possible done. There are always so many people contributing to enable these trips and support to be provided – and regrettably not the space to publicly appreciate every large and small valued individual offering! At the end of each trip I create a video of thanks and send personally to all I have contact details for. Pete Elliston (Essex) bought, undertook extensive repairs and oldier in Wales, Wales donated some militar donated the vehicle for this trip. Rick, a soldier military protective clothing and other survival kit. Churches active in prayer and donations include; St Mary’s Hadleigh, Ipswich international Church, All Saints Kesgrave and Bealings, St Mary’s Burstall, Felixstowe URC and a church in Sussex. Other groups supporting include; Kesgrave Ukraine Hub (Natalie), Ipswich Polish Community (Magda), Morrisons Hadleigh (Lisa), the Ansell Centre (donated for medical supplies), Mission Ukraine. As well as the faithful British locals helping these endeavours, there are numerous resident Ukrainians being active in many ways, for which I am so grateful. Olena, Natalie and Sasha being such key local partners, but of course many in Ukraine too! I am encouraged that there remains such a high level of local compassion and wise concern for the sufferings of Ukraine. James Cartlidge MP welcomed me back with a local coffee and encouragement for the continuation of this work. I am touched by the example of the “Mens Room” barbers who donated my haircut fee, on a hasty visit this week! The Uk i i recipients i i t off your care ttellll me it is “priceless”! Ukrainian I have already received some support towards the next trip, but much is needed still in addition to the funds required for delivery (fuel, ferry, return travel costs etc – I pay for food etc and any cheap hotel needed ); a 4x4 vehicle for the usual conversion to front line recovery transport, the priority material items (eg; medical etc and hygiene, vehicle maintenance tools, generators, high quality thermal clothing only – nothing less can be afforded the very limited space, blankets etc). If you wish to assist please contact me on the number below, use https://gofund.me/cb2f46a8 or access the QR code to donate via my “GoFundMe” (administered by registered charity BUA), or liaise with a relevant community group. My sincere thanks, and on behalf of Ukrainian recipients, to all who help in any way. David Jacobs - Tel: 07500 531901

Hello to our readers, I hope as always you have all been keeping well. At the farm we will be happy to see the back of all the flooding and heavy clay mud we have to work in, but not looking forward to the flies all over the animals in the summer either, so we can’t win and just have to get on with it and do the best we can for our lovely animals, with whatever we get thrown at us weather wise. You should be reading this just before our singles night on 1st February we have booked at The Stoke by Nayland Resort, with the age group being 40s to late 60s, as we know there are a lot of single ladies and gentlemen out there that are looking for someone to spend some time with, as it can be a lonely time on your own. It starts at 7pm. To book in with us for a nice evening out meeting new people, contact Sharon on: 07999 051401 or email Sharon: frenchs.100club@gmail.com. Thank you to everyone who joined our Christmas raffle and thank you to the people and businesses who gave us such good prizes. Two of our main prizes were for a spa day and a golf day that came from Stoke by Nayland resort. I have to say this winter so far has been extremely hard for us with the weather damaging and destroying our feed, belongings and the huge vet bills keeping the oldies we have happy, healthy and well, which is always my priority, but all of this comes at a financial cost! Finding donators is also hard, but I have to keep everything crossed and pray for some generosity to come our way. If you are reading this Cherry, thank you, you have been a silent blessing. All donations are welcome with open arms and much gratitude. We are planning to have another curry night and dog walk soon, as well as other events through the year, so keep an eye out in the village shops or on our website/facebook page for our posters f ti magazine i putt iin ffor us as well as in our monthly write up that this iinformative each month. The photos for February are of our sweet donkeys having their breakfast and Lucy our therapy dog making one of our rescued young cats Milo feel relaxed and loved. Lucy is so good with all animals, from the horses to rescued or injured birds, chickens, rabbits, kittens, you name it she will give her support to them, whether it is an animal or person in need, she goes to their side and offers her love. I am still looking for a part-time person who can work with us 3 mornings a week, one being a Tuesday. I need someone who is reliable and can be flexible to cover odd mornings when d d and d someone who h iis physically h i l capable, believe me your fitness and needed strength will improve, ask any of our helpers. One of our ladies has lost two stone and says she hasn’t looked that fit in years, so there are positives. Contact me (Jann) if you would like any more information about becoming part of our small team and helping care for our lovely horses and donkeys. French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment. Hadleigh Hares Running Club The winter season is upon us, so it can only mean one thing, cross country. As part of the North Essex & South Suffolk cross country league, members took part in the first race in the grounds of Writtle University. After a week of rain, typical muddy cross-country conditions were expected, but on the morning of the race, the mild conditions made it a pleasant run. We had 9 juniors and 8 seniors representing the Club on what was a tough course. Congratulations to Belinda Godbold who came 1st in her age group and to our runners of the day, Thomas Davis and Stuart Hunt. The second race took place at Gosfield School and with an air temperature of 3 degrees following an overnight frost, conditions were perfect but for most it was a case of trepidation. An extra layer of clothing and lots of tape around their spikes as Gosfield is a course known for mud, icy water, unexpected obstacles and lots of fun! The course didn’t disappoint and neither did the performances of all the attending Hares who were a credit to the club. We had a team of 8 juniors with Finlay Smith-Surety getting ‘runner of the day’ for his determination. For the seniors there was a great atmosphere before the start as Hares were fielding a full team and they had the use of our new red gazebo! After team photos and a team ‘power up’ everyone headed off to the line to take on the course. A fallen tree on the course gave this years unexpected obstacle. Some could jump over it, others had to climb over it but it all added to the challenge and fun of the day. Lucy Jay was named senior runner of the day. The third race of the season took place at Hilly Fields, Colchester and as always, the weather was a major factor. The previous day had been a day of torrential rain and thoughts of slipping and sliding around the course was in everyone’s mind. Amazingly, this was not the case. The course couldn’t have been better with very little mud and a slightly altered course. We were really spoilt as the route through the woods had had the leaves brushed to one side so we could see any tree roots that happened to be lurking. Hilly by name and hilly by nature, a truly challenging course. We had 7 of our amazing juniors putting in fantastic efforts around the course. Morgan Davies and Ella Baalham were our runners of the day. Our 8 senior runners put in a sterling job with Aden Bell coming in 15th place overall. Ryan McNeill was the runner of the day for setting up and organising the juniors. January 8th was the Cross-Country Championships held at Royal Hospital School, Ipswich. It is truly an amazing venue to hold this all day event. Our junior runners kicked off the day with Poppy Humphrey coming 3rd in the Under 11s. The senior men had a tough 10k course which was very muddy in places and particularly chilly along the sea wall. The senior ladies ran the last race of the day, another muddy 8k and all finished well before the light started to fade. The ladies team finished 6th out of 10th which is a great achievement. Congratulations to Belinda Godbald for coming first in her age group and Fiona Holland coming second in her age group. A Huge congratulations to juniors Laila McNeil, Elissa Bell, Annalise Bell, Morgan Davies, Ella Baalham, Alex Collins, Daniel Cooper, Thomas Davis, Finlay Gunning, Felix Clover, Kyan McNeill, Finlay Smith-Surety and Poppy Humphrey for taking part in the seasons cross-country. Also, a massive thank you to seniors Victoria Tapp, Belinda Godbold, Nathalie Hooper, Fiona Holland, Eleanor Langridge-Brown, Elizabeth Stewart, Lucy Jay, Samantha Cooper, Stuart Price, Adam Chamberlin, Aden Bell, Andrew Stewart, Stuart Hunt, Steve Hunt, Ryan McNeill, Ash Fiddis, Andrew Turner and Elaine Turner.

Hadleigh United U11 Girls On Sunday 7th January 2024, Hadleigh United under 11 Girls proudly donned their fresh home and away kits. The kits looked amazing, and the team played that way too, winning 9-0. Joel Runnels-Moss of Toucan Financial Services Limited said “It is with great pride that we are able to support the new Hadleigh under 11 girls’ team. It has been some time since Hadleigh had a junior girls’ team and we are delighted to work in partnership with a great local initiative. I love the way the team have adopted an approach that celebrates steps towards sustainable long-term progress over the short-term success of individual goals”. The Hadleigh United Under 11 Girls can be watched most Sunday mornings at the Millfield. Hadleigh United Youth - Girls Weetabix Wildcats

Hadleigh have had many recent challenges in recruiting new players and have had to play games with players out of position and a minimal bench. The tides, however, are starting to turn in the club’s favour and this means they are now competing on a more level playing field with other clubs in EC1 South. After the narrow loss of an earlier miserable away game at Felixstowe d during i Bibli Biblicall rain i and d wind i d storms, t Hadleigh Rams dug deep to take this game at Layham Road. With the Rams scoring in the first seven minutes through No.10, Redmore and the conversion from Manthorpe, you would think a win is a given. Not so here. The beauty of this game was the herculean defence from both sides throughout the whole eighty minutes. It was to be a strategic game of chess and on the hour Felixstowe fought back with a try and conversion of their own. The Rams had quite a few chances with break-aways down the blind side but the off-loads never quite made it. Every small battle was being fought ferociously at the rucks and mauls with Hadleigh No.7 Zac Kerr always in the middle digging away and backed up by some sturdy partnerships with the likes of Long, Cobb, Scarfe and Lloyd on hand. The Hadleigh backs were being ably fed by No.9 Jamieson who was always quick to spot a gap for the backs and centre Clemence, Full back, Manthorpe, and wing Moore were always keen to exploit them. The tension was palpable from the roar and sigh of the good home crowd at Layham Road, never more so than when Clemence broke through the solid Felixstowe defence in the last few minutes to score the winning try for the Rams. After the cheers subsided, Manthorpe added the points for the final 14 -7 win. Next week Hadleigh Rams travel to Thurston in a bid to secure a creditable top half finish to their season.
