Habs Weekly Pre-Prep and Prep School Edition Friday 9 February Spring Term

Head of Prep School’s Message As we approach the halfway mark of this term, it's a perfect moment to pause and reflect on the whirlwind of activities and achievements packed into these past few weeks. We feel immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our parent community. Recognising that the geographical distance often limits informal interactions with our Year 3 to 6 parents, many of whom rely on coach transportation, we decided to introduce a series of coffee mornings/afternoons. The response was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the value of fostering closer connections. Moving forward, we're excited to make these gatherings a termly tradition, cherishing the opportunity to deepen our relationships and strengthen this invaluable partnership. Throughout the Prep School, we've celebrated numerous triumphs this term. Our General Knowledge team advanced to the semi-finals, while our Science squad secured a spot in the finals of the National Schools Championship. Anticipation runs high as we await the outcomes of the Primary Maths Challenge, eager to see which of our Year 5 and 6 students will progress to the next round. In the realm of sports, our U11 Table Tennis team is gearing up for the Hertfordshire Table Tennis Schools Championship, while our U11 County Football team exhibited stellar performance at the Hertfordshire County Tournament, clinching joint 1st place in a nail-biting playoff match. County competitions serve as invaluable opportunities for our students to represent the Prep School with pride. We firmly believe in cultivating a passion for learning, extending beyond the confines of the classroom. This term, our Reception students immersed themselves in a day of artistic exploration, while Year 1 delved into STEM activities at the Discovery Centre. Year 2 embarked on a captivating journey to St. Paul's Cathedral as part of their Fire of London topic, and Year 3 honed their hazard awareness skills at Hazard Alley. Year 4 enjoyed an enriching visit to Radlett Synagogue, complementing their studies on tradition and practice. Additionally, the entire Prep School engaged in valuable lessons on online safety during Safer Internet Day and revelled in the vibrant energy of a Dragon Dance to mark our Chinese New Year celebrations. We look forward to all that next half-term will bring, but until then – I wish you all a safe and restful week. School will be closed on Monday 19 February for an INSET day, we look forward to welcoming the boys back on Tuesday 20 February. Warm wishes,

Ms K Umpleby Head of Prep and Pre-Prep

New!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Introducing our exciting new DT Recycling Project! We are on a mission to make a positive impact on the environment, and we need your help. We are calling on everyone to gather up those old cotton t-shirts and milk bottle tops that might be lying around. Instead of letting them go to waste, we are turning them into something incredible. By collecting these materials, you are not just cleaning out your closets; you are contributing to a sustainable future. Boys can bring in any old t-shirts and bottle tops to our designated collection point after the half-term break, and let us transfer them into new products. By the end of the Spring term, boys will hold a charity sale to sell their products and raise money for charity. Together, we can make a difference and create a greener, cleaner world for generations to come!

Artist Day Reception were excited to welcome an array of artists to school! Highlights of the day included, a show and tell about who we were dressed as or what we were wearing, and investigating the question, “what is an artist?”. We explored the different mediums they can use such as clay, paint and oil pastels and enjoyed experimenting with these and more in Learn and Explore time. Our focus artist was Chris Ofili (www.tate.org.uk - Chris Ofili). We learnt about his different inspirations and experienced them for ourselves. For example, we drew to music and discussed how the genre of music influenced what appeared in front of us. In addition we experimented painting using only different shades of blue. We were inspired by the more unusual medium of elephant dung like Chris used in his early career but unfortunately it was in short supply on campus! Instead, we made mud paintings in Leafy Learners later in the week. Today launched our new Literacy text, The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson. We created our very own magic paintbrushes using clay and applied phonics skills to write about what makes them magic.

Y1 STEM Discovery Centre Visit The children had a fantastic day at the STEM Discovery Centre. We were welcomed by the scientists who taught us how satellites work and what they are used for... including spotting animal habitats - we became detectives and hunted for Emperor Penguin poo in Antarctica. Each child made their own slime using chemical reactions and we were very lucky to see the Mars Rover Robots in their testing area - did you know, they had to bake the sand they test these on, to replicate conditions on Mars? So much fun was had exploring the interactive STEM room and the children particularly enjoyed giving their teacher an electric shock! We finished our day with a truly magical science show.

At the theatre, the boys were mesmerised by the lights, costumes and special effects that took place on stage.
