Pre-Prep and Prep School edition
Friday 7 June
Summer Term
This week we should all take a moment to remember and honour the brave men and women who participated in one of the most significant events in world history D-Day, which occurred on 6 June 1944. This monumental day marked the beginning of the end of World War II, as Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. D-Day, also known as the Normandy Landings, involved the coordination and courage of thousands of soldiers, sailors, and airmen from various Allied nations. They faced overwhelming odds, battling not only the fortified German defences, but also the harsh elements and treacherous terrain. Their determination and bravery laid the foundation for the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
As we reflect on this pivotal moment, it's important to recognise the values exemplified by those who fought on D-Day courage, sacrifice, and unity. These are principles that we strive to instil in our children every day. The story of D-Day is not just a historical event; it is a powerful lesson in the importance of working together for a common cause, standing up against tyranny, and making sacrifices for the greater good.
In our classrooms, we aim to bring history to life, helping our students understand the significance of events like D-Day and the impact they have on our world today. By learning about the past, we hope to inspire our young learners to appreciate the freedoms they enjoy and to understand the responsibilities that come with those freedoms. It is important that we reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to secure the liberties we often take for granted and we should encourage our children to draw inspiration from these historical events, understanding that they, too, have the potential to make a positive impact on the world.
We are proud to be a part of a community that values history, education, and the lessons we can learn from those who came before us. We pride ourselves in fostering an environment where our children can grow, learn, and be inspired by the remarkable stories of our past.
Reception launched the second half of the Summer Term with their ‘Fun in the Sun Day’, inspired by the text 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' by Ronda and David Armitage. They enjoyed developing narratives in our pirate ship and ice-cream shop role-plays, a brief dip in the paddling pool, creating their own unique lighthouses and an ice lolly to finish the day!
On Wednesday, our Battle of the Bands Finals took place. It is easy to understate just how fantastic an event is, bringing the whole Prep School community together. The children wowed the audience, typifying our values of Courage and Ambition with performances varying from Passenger to The White Stripes and even Tears For Fears! I know a considerable amount of time has been sent rehearsing and preparing ahead of the performance and some of the costumes were simply outrageous! Thank you, parents, for your patience and support.

We are delighted to announce that in preparation for the weekly swimming lessons in Year 1, we have arranged for Reception to enjoy three introductory swimming classes at the Medburn swimming pool. These sessions are scheduled after the half term break on Monday 10 June, Monday 17 June and Monday 1 July. During each 30-minute session, the floor of the swimming pool will be raised, and your child will be supervised by four experienced swimming teachers, a lifeguard and a teaching assistant.
With regards to changing, whilst staff will of course be on hand to assist, we will also encourage a high level of independence. In preparation, please could we kindly ask for your support at home by encouraging your son to dry and dress himself independently after bath time.
For these introductory sessions, children may wear their own swimming attire. Please ensure your child brings a pair of swimming trunks, a swimming hat and a towel in a separate bag (a drawstring bag or one that can be securely closed is ideal). Goggles won’t be necessary. Please kindly ensure all items, including your child’s bag and uniform, are clearly labelled. In Year 1, all children will require Habs branded swimming kit as per the uniform policy.
Please note that all children are expected to participate in the swimming sessions if they are well enough to be at school. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
