Pre-Prep and Prep School edition
Friday 24 May
Summer Term
I am writing this, elated after watching the Year 6 Production of 'Joseph'. At the start of the academic year, I was told this production was a must-see event. However, I didn't anticipate just how amazing it would be! If I had to sum it up in one word – phenomenal! Our Year 6 students took to the stage with remarkable presence and delivered a performance worthy of the West End. Year 6, I am extremely proud of each one of you, and I hope your final term at the Prep School is unforgettable. Well done, gentlemen, well done!
As we approach the end of the school year, it's essential to focus on the importance of transition for our students. Transition periods, whether they involve moving to a new year group, school, or even preparing for the summer break, are significant times for growth and adjustment.
Next half term, all students will have the opportunity to visit their new classroom and meet their new teacher. I am confident they will have a great experience and return excited about the upcoming year. However, they might have questions or feel anxious about the change. Supporting your child through these changes can make a big difference in their confidence and success. Encourage open conversations about their feelings and expectations and help them set realistic goals. Together, we can ensure that each student feels prepared and optimistic about the next steps in their educational journey.
3BG treated us to an assembly about table manners. Teaching children about manners is crucial as it helps them develop respect, empathy, and effective communication skills, which are essential for building positive relationships throughout their lives. Good manners also contribute to creating a harmonious and considerate community, fostering a sense of mutual respect and cooperation.
As always, our leadership team remains available for any discussions or queries.
Enjoy the half-term break, which I hope is filled with joy, and opportunities to rest and recharge. We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 4 June.

We are delighted to announce that in preparation for the weekly swimming lessons in Year 1, we have arranged for Reception to enjoy three introductory swimming classes at the Medburn swimming pool. These sessions are scheduled after the half term break on Monday 10 June, Monday 17 June and Monday 1 July. During each 30-minute session, the floor of the swimming pool will be raised, and your child will be supervised by four experienced swimming teachers, a lifeguard and a teaching assistant.
With regards to changing, whilst staff will of course be on hand to assist, we will also encourage a high level of independence. In preparation, please could we kindly ask for your support at home by encouraging your son to dry and dress himself independently after bath time.
For these introductory sessions, children may wear their own swimming attire. Please ensure your child brings a pair of swimming trunks, a swimming hat and a towel in a separate bag (a drawstring bag or one that can be securely closed is ideal). Goggles won’t be necessary. Please kindly ensure all items, including your child’s bag and uniform, are clearly labelled. In Year 1, all children will require Habs branded swimming kit as per the uniform policy.
Please note that all children are expected to participate in the swimming sessions if they are well enough to be at school. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Jacob (Y6), Luca (Y3) and Liam (Y6) participated as part of the Barnet U11 Chess Team on Saturday 11 May in the EPSCA U11 National Championship Finals. Their team came second overall out of 15 teams, winning the silver trophies. Congratulations!
Very well done to Luca (Y3) who also participated in the U9 Chess Finals on Saturday 20 April. His team achieved an outstanding second-place finish!
Congratulations to Daniyal (Y4) for his outstanding performance at the Radlett Rotary Fun Run 2024 held on 6 May. Daniyal achieved first place in both the Under 11s 1.5km race, finishing in 5 minutes and 57 seconds and the Under 12s 5km race, with an impressive time of 20 minutes and 31 seconds.
Pupils in DT held a chair design competition at the beginning of the year during their DT lessons. Congratulations to Aarev (Y6) whose design stood out and won the competition. His winning creation has been expertly crafted to full-scale proportions and is now proudly showcased in the Prep School Reception area. The chair will be moved to the library for all Prep boys to enjoy after the half-term break. Well done to Aarev for his exceptional achievement, and to all the participants for their creativity and hard work.
5,4,3,2,1 Blast Off! Reception launched their new space topic at the start of this term, and we were greeted with evidence of a potential crash landing from outer space in our outside area! After examining the clues and making hypothesise, we decided to each write a letter to the alien to offer reassurance but also ask it questions as we were very curious at what had happened. We investigated the difference between questions and statements and applied question marks in our writing.
Space Day also featured conducting a tally chart to establish which planet is the most favourite and launching stomp rockets outside. We demonstrated flexibility of mindset by adapting the position and direction of the rockets to best utilise the generous wind!
Thank you to parents and carers for your support with the fabulous space costumes.
Year 2 Grandparents spent an enjoyable afternoon with their grandsons at the Pre-Prep School. The boys were extremely excited to show their Grandparents their work and show them around the new building. The hall was magically transformed into a coffee shop where grandparents relaxed with a cup of tea and petit fours. It was a pleasure to welcome everyone to the Pre-Prep and spend the afternoon together.
Year 1 enjoyed some collaboration in the sunshine. They shared their favourite books with one another. We look forward to our joint picnic together next half term.
Year 2 had an exciting visit to Cuffley Camp. They enjoyed taking part in a variety of outdoor activities alongside Habs Girls. They worked together to complete the low rope challenge and were fascinated to learn how to light fires and build large shelters that whole groups could fit into. We were so lucky with the weather and fun was had by all.
The Pre-Prep is buzzing (or should it be chirping) with excitement as eight of our eggs in the incubator have hatched. As well as learning about the life cycle of a chicken, we will be learning about how to look after them and of course have lots of opportunities to hold them.
Towards the end of April, Habs Prep and Pre-Prep Schools celebrated St. George’s Day. It was so amazing to see everyone come into school wearing their red clothes and participating in the market stall.
During their DT lessons, all the Prep boys had made different items from recycled materials. These included shopping bags, coasters, place mats and ear-rings. Everything that was used in the sale was sold within 15 minutes!
We also hosted a few different games and shops. Pin the spear on the dragon was a very popular game, and by the end of break time and lunchtime, there was barely any space left for anyone to put their names! The charity which we raised money for is called WaterAid which helps families to have access to clean drinking water and nice clean toilets. This year, thanks to the money you gave to charity, we raised an incredible £757!
A huge thank you to the Prep School for creating your recycled objects in D.T and for supporting such a great cause Thank you to the Pre-Prep School for your support as well.
Lastly, thank you to Mrs. Adat and the George’s staff for organising this incredible day.
By Seth 6SAOn Wednesday 24 April, the Eco Council helped the school celebrate Earth Day. We went on a litter picking spree, picking up most of the rubbish in all parts of this vast school. These gestures can help benefit the eco system of the school. After lunch break, Eco council had put together an assembly, informing all the boys about Earth Day and suggestions of how they can do to help reduce plastic consumption. This year’s theme was 'people vs plastic'. Earth Day is a way we can all come together and help protect Mother Earth and remind us to do this all year around. This event is global and is recognised by many as way to highlight the importance of protecting the environment.
By Ranvir 6SAWhen we went to St Albans the first thing we saw was a huge ancient looking Cathedral. We then entered the Cathedral; it was so calm and peaceful inside. Our tour guide told us the story about St Albans Cathedral but to make the images clearer in our heads he got some cloaks and props and chose some of us to act it out. It was really interesting learning about Alban. We then were shown around the Cathedral, taking note of the main features, especially the font, shape of the building, the altar, pulpit and cross of Jesus. The best part was getting to meet a friendly Priest who was responsible for the youth work at the Cathedral. We loved asking him questions that linked to our History and T&P work, linked to the reformation and the different traditions within the Church.
By Benjamin 5RDThe boys in Year 6 have worked incredibly hard on their production of 'Joseph' and their efforts culminated into some energetic, uplifting and professional performances that received standing ovations all round! From sets and costumes to musicality and movement, it was an unmissable show. The boys truly felt the adrenaline running through their bodies as they embraced the opportunity to perform to live audiences.
The process involved our wonderful boys overcoming fears, building their confidence and resilience, and showing ambition to give the best performances they possibly could.
We encourage them to continue to push themselves, take risks and demonstrate their range of talents as they move to Senior School next year.
Year 5 had a fantastic week at Oakwood Youth Challenge earlier this term. Participating in a multitude of activities ranging from high ropes to mountain boarding, crate stacking to archery the boys all pushed themselves out of their comfort zones to participate in new experiences. Throughout the week the boys all worked towards their Level 1 NIBAS qualification, a nationally recognised bouldering award. Congratulations to all the boys for achieving this award. Teamwork and supporting each other were the key themes of the trip to ensure success for everyone.
Year 3 have had the most amazing three days on their residential, living life as an evacuee in the countryside. They learnt about what life would have been like for a child in Britain in the 1940s and even ate rationed food. On their final day, VE Day celebrations were in full swing! The boys learnt how to be more independent, helped with chores and they were very polite to all the staff members.
In the National IAPS table tennis championship, our team demonstrated remarkable skill, with all four players advancing to the second round. Notably, James (Y5) showed exceptional prowess, securing a commendable 4th place overall, a testament to his dedication and talent.
Our Under 11s football team triumphed in the Wix Trophy, clinching victory in a closely contested match against King James. This achievement is well deserved, reflecting the team's consistent excellence throughout the season.
As the sunshine graces us, the boys are eagerly engaging in cricket and tennis fixtures. Looking ahead, the anticipation is high for upcoming athletics meets, sports days, and cricket matches in the latter half of the term. We are also looking forward to our cricket collaboration festival with the Girls School after half term. The Boys Prep School continues to foster a culture of athleticism, sportsmanship, and achievement, instilling values that extend far beyond the playing field.
An exciting addition to our sporting calendar was our debut in the ISGA Gf League against St Edmunds School. The boys exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and skill, embodying the core values of our Prep School.
Parents and Guardians are encouraged to introduce their sons to golf at Hertsmere Golf Club, providing them with the opportunity to explore this rewarding sport. Plans are underway to continue our participation in the golf league next year, with the after-school golf club set to run throughout the Autumn and Spring terms. Our local club, who provide our after-school golf lessons have just launched a junior open day which they be hosting once per month on a Sunday.
All the details are here - Junior Golf Open Day - The Hertsmere The Hertsmere
Luca, Noah, Liam and Seth (Y6) qualified for Nationals at the Primary ESSA Team Championships on Friday 25 April. They qualified in 2 events – 4 x 25m front crawl relay and 4 x 25m medley relay. The Nationals are in Sheffield on Saturday 15th June.
The boys had a chance to showcase their progress in swimming at our Pre-Prep & Prep School galas. There was a community spirit as parents, boys and staff cheered the boys on and celebrated the boys' stamina and ambition. Swimming is an important life skill which involves co-ordination and perseverance. We hope in the warmer months ahead, and with the long summer holiday approaching we will have opportunity to elevate our skills further in outdoor pools and in the sea.
Pupils in Years 4 to 6 enjoyed a fantastic experience of professional basketball at the O2 Arena. Over 20,000 spectators enjoyed the exciting spectacle between the two best teams in the country. We are hoping this will have inspired more boys to join our basketball co-curricular clubs in the Autumn term.
