Summer Term 2

Head of Junior School’s message

I hope you had a wonderful half term, it was lovely to see so many parents at the feedback session on Thursday and during parents’ evening. During the feedback session, Ms Elliott and I shared the following updates in response to the parent voice session in February and parent survey:

From September 2024, as part of Family Fridays there will be an opportunity to meet with members of the Senior Leadership Team over a cup of tea or coffee.

In the Autumn term, there will be an Annual Parents Meeting with Dr Bagworth – Mann, Mrs Brown and the senior leadership team. Parents will have the opportunity to submit questions prior to the event which will be covered during the evening.

To continue to invite parents into the Junior school to share their expertise and life experience in assemblies and the classroom. If you would like to share your expertise, please contact Ms Elliott or Mr Nichols.

During the Autumn term, parents will be invited for breakfast in their year groups to meet the teachers, members of the senior leadership team and each other.

Our Autumn term parents’ evening will be earlier in the term to allow parents to meet with their class teacher and hear how their daughter has settled.

A new transition coffee morning for parents and pupils in year 6 will take place to find out more information from the current year 7s.

We will be trialling the use of Firefly as a parent app to enhance communication for newsletters, curriculum information, sharing updates and photographs. This will mean we no longer use X.com/ twitter to share photographs

· From September, Spanish will be taught from Reception to Year 5. During Year 6, the girls will be taught languages on a rotation to include French and German, they will also be taught Latin.

We are currently completing a review of our trips, residentials and co-curricular offer to continue to ensure it is ambitious and will implement changes based on our review.

We are changing the timing of evening performances to reflect the age of the girls. Performances will start earlier i.e. 6 or 6.30pm to allow the girls to be home earlier

· In September, there will be a change to the class names. Reception to Year 2 will be named after Haberdashery i.e. Reception Bobbins, Reception Buttons and for Year 3 to Year 6 after their teachers’ initials i.e. if Mrs Brown teaches Year 5 the class will be Year 5 CB. As explained in the meeting, we will reflect on your feedback and continue to adapt.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

At this year’s joint schools' summer fair, the Habs’ Boys’ Parents’ Guild will be running a tombola which is always hugely popular with the students. Your child has been sent home with a pot to fill over half term, they are welcome to decorate the pot and put their name on it. Please could we ask that they fill it with any combination of sweets, chocolate, toys, puzzles etc - basically anything they would like to receive back. Please note that any food items will need to be free from nuts and sesame seeds. The girls can return the filled pot to the Junior School reception at the beginning of next half term, and these will form the prizes for the tombola. The Habs’ Boys’ Parents’ Guild will additionally have a book and toy stall at the fair. If you have any children's books in good condition or unused or nearly new puzzles and games you would like to donate, they would gratefully received by the Guild. Similarly, these can be dropped off by your child at Junior School reception after half term - these will be collected on a regular basis.

Year 3 & 4 Chorister Auditions – 24 & 25 June 2024

Habs Choristers is an auditioned choir that sings three services a year outside of school. Potential choristers do not need to be taking voice lessons and, although being able to read musical notation would be an advantage, it is not a requirement – the choir is open to all who enjoy singing to a high standard. This year the Habs Choristers has performed at St John the Baptist Church, Chipping Barnet, All Saints, Margaret Street in London and, on 22 June, will sing at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. For our services outside of school the group is joined by professional musicians, most of whom are former Cambridge Choral Scholars.

For an idea of the sort of performances that the choir will give, please click the links below:

Evensong – Corpus Christi College, Cambridge – June 2023

Carol Service – St John the Baptist Church, Chipping Barnet – December 2023

Evensong – All Saints, Margaret Street – April 2024

Auditions for next will be held at lunchtimes on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 June and will be conducted by me and a member of the Junior School Music team. Rehearsals are held between 8.00 – 8.30am on Tuesday and Thursday and will begin the following week; taking up a place in the choir requires attendance at both weekly rehearsals. Please discuss this new opportunity with your child and to register for an audition please fill in this form.

The audition

Sing the opening choruses and opening verse of the hymn: All things bright and beautiful

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small.

All things wise and wonderful,

The Lord God that made them all.

Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings.

He made their glowing colours, And made their tiny wings.

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small.

All things wise and wonderful,

The Lord God that made them all.

Sing back some phrases of an unfamiliar piece

Sing some scales to assess range

Habs Choristers aims to provide an opportunity for girls to sing choral music of the English Choral Tradition to a high standard through the creation of an auditioned musical ensemble at the Junior School. The pupils may be exposed to a style of music and singing they might not previously have encountered and the choir will work with professional musicians on a regular basis. In creating this ensemble the school will promote a cultural experience consistent with the school’s historical foundation but which is open to pupils from all religious and cultural backgrounds; the choir will visit places of cultural importance to sing.

As previously stated the music that the choir will sing will be sacred and the services in which they will sing outside of school will be Christian. However, and I can’t stress this strongly enough, this should present no barrier to anyone of any faith or none auditioning for the choir. My own experience as a singer is that the world of choral music is very diverse with everyone feeling able to sing, what is in essence, excellent music set to profound and poetic texts. For some the words have greater meaning but for others they do not.

Fabulous Four-Stringers

There will also be solo and small group items interspersed in the programme, provided by performers from Year 5 and 6. Please note that girls in the ensembles and the Year 5 and 6 solo/group performers will need to bring their instruments into school on the day of the concert for a rehearsal. The dress for the evening is summer uniform.

Participating girls will also be staying onsite between school finishing and the concert starting, so it is important that they come into school in the morning with their instruments (if needed) and wearing the correct uniform.

Pre-concert refreshments will be available for the audience in the Prevett Hall foyer from 5.30pm. We expect the concert to end by 7.15pm.

Tickets for the evening can be reserved online using the box office, details of which will be shared shortly. There is a limit of 2 tickets per family for this concert. Students taking part in the concert do not need tickets.

We look forward to seeing you at the Summer Concert which promises to be a varied programme and a real showcase for all involved.
