Head of Prep School’s message

Welcome to our Spring Term Highlights. As we bid farewell to another eventful term at the Prep School, it's with great pride that we reflect on the accomplishments and experiences our boys have gained over the past few months. From embracing curiosity to fostering courage, ambition, and community spirit, our boys have truly shone in all that they have done. Our youngest learners in Reception, have stepped into the roles of artists, scientists, and mathematicians for a day, exploring the wonders of creativity and discovery. Their enthusiasm and creativity continue to inspire. Year 1 embarked on a thrilling journey to the STEM Discovery Centre and the magical literary world of Roald Dahl at the museum. Through these experiences, they ignited their imaginations and delved into the realms of science and literature. Year 2 ventured into St. Paul's Cathedral, marvelling at its grandeur and learning about the impact of the Great Fire of London on that area, and then immersed themselves in the mysteries of Ancient Egypt for a day. Their curiosity knows no bounds!

A trip to Hazard Alley heightened Year 3's risk awareness, equipping them with valuable life skills and ensuring their safety in various situations. Year 4 fostered connections with our local community through a visit to Radlett Synagogue, embracing the similarities and differences in our beliefs and learning to appreciate diversity. Year 5 explored the rich history of our capital city with a visit to the Tower of London, whilst Year 6 delved into the world of art at the National Gallery, gaining inspiration from the masterpieces of renowned artists.

Our Under 11 Football team has gone from strength to strength, reaching the finals in the prestigious WIX County level championship, and the semi-finals in the Independent Schools Football Association Cup. However, Sports in the Prep is also about breadth of experiences and opportunities, enabling boys to find their sport. Earlier this term we hosted our first ever Basketball Festival and a group of Year 4 to 6 boys participated in our first ever Table Tennis competition. We were also thrilled to celebrate our young musicians through a series of Young Musician of the Year category finals, and a fantastic Grand Final concert.Another first, a group of both Prep and Junior School musicians participated in the Cheltenham National Youth Brass Championships, gaining a merit commendation – what a talented group of our young musicians we have. Beyond Sport and Music, the whole school came together to mark various cultural events and celebrations, including World Book Day, International Day, Mother Languages Week, Wellbeing Day, and Internet Safety Day.

Throughout the term, our boys have demonstrated courage and curiosity by stepping out of their comfort zones, whether in the classroom, on the stage or the sports field. They've shown ambition by setting themselves high standards and putting in hard work and commitment to achieve their goals. They should all feel proud of everything they, and our wonderful community, have achieved.

As we look ahead to the summer term, we carry forward the spirit of curiosity, courage, ambition, and community that defines our school. Thank you for your continued support in nurturing our boys' growth and development. Wishing you a wonderful break. Wishing the pupils that have left for our inaugural Barbados cricket tour a wonderful time. We look forward to welcoming the Year 5 boys back on Monday 15 April as they depart for their residential at Oakwood Youth Challenge, and the rest of the boys on Tuesday 16 April.

Stay safe and have fun.

GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS

We recognise that many of you seek guidance on what books we recommend for our students. However, we find that providing prescribed book lists by year group isn't particularly beneficial. Research indicates that students who select their own reading material are more likely to engage with the content.Additionally, what appeals to one child in Year 4 may not resonate with all 60 students, as individual preferences and reading levels vary.

However, if you would like personalised recommendations for your son, please reach out to our librarian, Mrs Zinkin, at zinkin_c@habsboys.org.uk Additionally, we encourage you to explore the following online guides, which are reputable sources with valuable insights.

This was a fantastic experience for the boys, playing matches against backdrops of stunning scenery including Table Mountain. The standard of cricket was very high, and the South African boys were strong and athletic. Overall, the team performed well and competed hard, coming away with two victories and four losses. The boys learned so much from the trip, learning lots about South African culture and making many new friends. They were extremely grateful for the warm hospitality received and the opportunity to experience playing sport in a different country. PRE-PREP NEWS STORIES

Reception Science Day

Hip-Hip Hooray, it’s National Science Day!

Highlights of the day included:

-Discussing what Science is, asking questions, making a hypothesis, and finding out. We had an explosive start talking about carbon dioxide and reactions with mentos and coke!

-Learning about different energy sources and working as a team to problem solve how to connect a circuit.

Our challenges included investigating the following:

1. Can you make the bulb light up with two wires and the batteries?

2. Does the brightness change depending on how many batteries?

3. Can you now include one more bulb in the circuit (not two, one continuous circuit!)

4. Can you find another way of doing the above?

5. Finally, can you add an on/off button to the circuit?

-Exploring solids, liquids and gasses using cornflour and water- is it a solid or liquid...or both?!

-Discussing growth; will our beans grow without soil?

-Breaking any potential stereotypes about who/what a Scientist is and what they look like; they look like everyone! Today we learnt about Steven Hawking, we will explore other scientists such as Mae Jemison and Marie Curie throughout the term.

-Thinking about why raisins sink in water but float (or do they?) in lemonade.

-Finding out what food colouring is using skittles and different variables.

-Exploring colour mixing using coloured water and paper; will the colour 'travel?'

International Celebrations

It has been such a wonderfully successful week celebrating International Mother Language Day and sharing the diverse range of languages and cultures we're lucky enough to have making up our community.

From dressing up as a stereotypical Frenchman with a moustache, beret and a baguette, sharing cultural insights linked to recent Chinese New Year celebrations and the use of symbols in pictograms, bringing a classic language like Latin alive linking it to various other languages and using music to help practise greetings in Yoruba and Swahili, we've had so many valuable learning opportunities this week - for the teachers and parents as well as the students!

In total this week and next Monday we will have had 40 language learning opportunities run by incredible parents and grandparents across the Pre-Prep and Prep classes which will be made up of 20 different languages! In addition to that, we've had some of our boys also share some languages with their peers!

As well as celebrating the range of languages spoken by our families for International Mother Languages Day, our term has culminated in our very own International Day. The boys have come to school in traditional clothes or colours represented by a country's flag, participated in a carousel of internationally-themed activities in their house families and have ended the day with some fabulous musical performances and a parade!

Thanks so much to all our families for their ongoing collaboration with these events!

If you would like to share some feedback about the linguistic and cultural events held so far this year, all comments will be gratefully received on this form
