EVENINGS & WEEKENDS AT GVR GVR’s clubs set their own schedules, and those often coincide with the retiree lifestyle. GVR instructors are contractors, and select their class times based on demand. As a result, a lot of good stuff happens between 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday. A lot. But not all! All centers are open from 5:30am-9pm, seven days per week, except for the Pickleball Center which closes at dusk. Members are welcome to swim, work out, play any of GVR’s racket sports, gather at bocce or shuffleboard courts, shoot some pool, or play table tennis—all available until closing, with no reservations or additional fees required. Water aerobics is offered on a drop-in, no-fee basis in four locations on Saturday mornings. Performances and movies are scheduled in the evenings throughout the year. The La Canoa Lion’s Club offers bingo every Friday night at East Center. Families with kids are welcome to use any pool any evening between 4pm and 6pm, and all weekend long at West Center. For Fall Quarter, GVR instructors are offering more than a dozen evening or weekend classes. Four groups routinely dance in the evenings or on weekends: GVR Square and Round Dance Club (Monday night),
Argentine Tango Club (weekends), GVR Line Dancers (Saturday), and the GVR Dance Club (Friday night). Several card clubs meet “after hours,” including pinochle, canasta, sheepshead, euchre, poker, and cribbage. The GVR Needlearts Club has offered to add an evening or weekend meeting to their schedule, to accommodate those who can’t attend on weekdays. The GVR Bicycling club has a number of groups who ride on weekends. The Singles Club, Amigas, and Amigos meet routinely on weekend mornings. Across the campus, “three-month groups” unaffiliated with clubs reserve rooms in the evenings (for three months at a time) to play games, do crafts, make music, study, Cont’d on p2

exercise, or just enjoy some food and gab. Several of the regional social clubs (Michigan, New England, etc.) meet over dinner. GVR even has a club dedicated to watching the Packers games on Sundays. Yes, most GVR members are retirees and most activities reflect that, but there really is something for everyone at GVR.
LAST MEETING HIGHLIGHTS At the regular meeting of the Board of Directors on Wednesday, August 25, the Board approved all motions:
> Approve the Fiscal Affairs Committee
recommendation to transfer the 2020 operations surplus of $125,871 to the Initiative Reserve Account.
> Approve the Fiscal Affairs Committee
recommendation to transfer $500,000 from Operating Cash to the Initiatives Board Designated Reserve.
> Approve the Fiscal Affairs Committee
recommendation to authorize staff to create a separate Major Pool and Spa Replacement account as part B of the existing MRR reserve, eliminating the recently approved Major Asset Replacement Fund (MAR).
Director Don Weaver announced his immediate resignation from the Board, due to his impending move back to Tennessee. Per Article VI.1.f of the GVR Bylaws, Connie Griffin agreed to serve out Mr. Weaver’s term which ends in 2022.

Volunteers are needed for Arts & Entertainment programs for the 2021-2022 season! Volunteers assist staff and patrons at performances, movies, and dances. Training sessions are scheduled for September 21, October 12, and October 26 from 9am-10am. Trainings are held at the West Center Auditorium. You only need to attend one and there’s no need to register—all GVR members are welcome and appreciated!

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT AND CLASSES Registration is underway for the 2021 fall class quarter! The course catalog features 107 classes, including longstanding favorites such as chair yoga, Argentine Tango, 20/20/20 fitness, watercolor, Zumba Gold, and beginning Bridge. This quarter also offers twenty-two new classes to explore. Acrylics 101, Intro to Nordic Walking, Grief and Meaning, The Secrets of Having More Energy, Mystic Poetry of Rumi Hafiz and Darshan, Sociology of the Family—these are just a
handful of course titles that are new to the GVR curriculum. As usual, a number of classes are offered on a drop-in (pay per session) basis for folks to sample a course or to get a onetime workout while visiting from out of town. Check out the list on page five and give something new a try! GVR’s free lecture series also resumes this month featuring the Santa Cruz Regional Hospital, Northwest Medical Center, and the Green Valley Gardeners. Check the calendar for dates and locations.
