The Del Sol Clubhouse Marks a New Era
Let’s take a nostalgic trip back to the electrifying spring and summer of 1994. It was a time of unforgettable moments: Quentin Tarantino’s groundbreaking premiere of Pulp Fiction, the roaring success of The Lion King, the whirlwind romance between Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson, O.J. Simpson’s infamous police chase in his Ford Bronco, and the debut of the iconic sitcom Friends.
During this period of excitement, GVR was already a thriving community hub. The Junior Adventures Program, led by student interns, offered children ages 5–11 a diverse range of activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, games, water sports, volleyball, with special prizes each week. The program also featured luncheons for parents and grandparents. Although GVR had not yet acquired the East Center, which was then owned by Haven Equities and leased to GVR, the community was buzzing with energy. The Computer Club received
national recognition for raising funds to equip a computer lab at Sahuarita Elementary School, showcasing the talent within our community. Members participated in a myriad of activities, from ladies’ slimnastics and senior co-ed aerobics to Lucille’s Happy Art, bingo, and the Silver Foxes video exercise class. The spring/summer itinerary was packed with options, including a scenic Mt. Lemmon tour and picnic, bird watching and brunch at Tohono Chul Park, various movies, concerts, dances, and ice cream socials. This era epitomized camaraderie and excitement within the GVR community.
Fast forward 30 years to the exciting year of 2024, and GVR has undergone remarkable growth and transformation. We now proudly present fifteen recreation centers, including the soon-to-open Del Sol Clubhouse. Membership has skyrocketed from 7,990 in 1994 to an impressive 23,000+ as of June 2024, reflecting the thriving and inclusive nature of GVR.

Did You Know?
Starting June 1, there will be changes at Canoa Ranch’s pickleball courts. Say goodbye to the old reservation system and hello to a whole new level of fun and inclusivity. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just curious about this addictive sport, we’re rolling out the green carpet for you. GVR members and their cardcarrying guests are welcome to join the fun, whether or not they belong to the GVR Pickleball Club.
Courts 1–3 are dedicated to open play for all skill levels—just place your paddle outside the fence to hold your spot. Court 4, perfect for those who are new, curious, or want a friendly game, offers a dedicated casual play space. Don’t have a paddle? No problem! Loaner paddles are available for your convenience. Reservations for court 4 can be made by emailing reservations@gvrec.org by 3pm the previous day to secure 90 minutes of pickleball paradise.
New to pickleball and want some instruction? Sign up for the Pickleball 101 class to learn the basics, meet fellow newcomers, and unleash your inner champ. Register at GVRec.org, by calling 520-625-0288, or inperson at the West Center Box Office. We recommend wearing court shoes designed for outdoor courts to ensure safety and comfort.
With a whopping 35 additional courts open for play, there’s no shortage of space and plenty of room for everyone. Let’s make memories, break a sweat, and celebrate the pickleball love together! For more information, go to the Racquet Sports section at GVRec.org.
Letter from the President
Del Sol Clubhouse is moving right along. If all goes well, the building should open before Fall of this year. Hope all of you get a chance to drop by and check out the facility and the view. This center will be our first social center that is intended for just gatherings. You can also use the lobby at Canoa Hills to sit and play cards or visit with your friends?
As you know there have been some policy changes on room use. We have limited space and staff has been trying to use that space better. It is a balancing act. Hang in there and be sure to let us know when you see both good things and not good things with room reservations.
We are still looking at what if any type of food/beverage service can be added to the new social center at Del Sol. So, no news yet on this!
Committees have been looking at their plans for this year and what they would like to accomplish. We really appreciate the members taking time to work on a committee. If you are interested in helping on a committee, please fill out an application form on the GVR website at gvrec.org/governance/ committees/.
We will have a work session and a regular meeting in June if needed. Yep, again, watch for news on this.
I have gotten emails from some of you and try to answer you or send it on to staff for answers. Contact us through board@gvrec. org, come to committee meetings and/or join us for the monthly Board meetings. Happy 4th of July!!!!
—Marge Garneau, Board President

Re-opening the Del Sol Clubhouse
The highlight of our recent developments is the muchanticipated re-opening of the Del Sol Clubhouse. This newly renovated drop-in center is designed to be a central hub for socializing and leisure activities. Members will enjoy spaces dedicated to games, TV, pool, and darts. Expect future recreation catalogs to include board game events, karaoke, paint & sips, poetry nights, and perhaps even wine tasting. Not too far down the road, we look forward to announcing food and beverage options which will further enhance the Clubhouse’s appeal as a place to relax and connect. Join us for the grand re-opening on July 4. (Details on page 7)
As we celebrate the re-opening of the Del Sol Clubhouse, it’s essential to acknowledge the core values that have driven
GVR’s success over the years. While the organization and the membership have evolved, our commitment to fostering friendships and providing opportunities for physical, mental, and social engagement remains steadfast. GVR continues to prioritize creating a welcoming and enriching environment for all members.
What is Active Recovery?
Have you ever wondered about active recovery? It’s a neat concept where, during breaks between sets of weightlifting, you engage in light aerobic activities like a casual stroll around the fitness center or a few rounds of jumping jacks.
Why is it so beneficial? For starters, it gives your muscles a chance to recuperate while still in motion, promoting better blood flow and helping to flush out lactic acid buildup. Say goodbye to post-workout soreness and fatigue.
But that’s not all. Keeping your heart rate up with some light activity between sets is like giving your cardio-vascular system a little boost. Plus, it can help burn extra calories and gradually improve your endurance.
And here’s another perk—taking a short walk during your workout isn’t just good for your body,
it’s a mental refresher too. It gives your mind a break from the intensity of lifting and allows you to relax and refocus for the next set.
Here’s an extra bonus: it actually saves you time. By incorporating light activity into your rest periods, you’re making the most of your gym time and potentially shortening the overall duration of your workout.
Walking between sets also offers benefits for flexibility and mobility. Adding in some dynamic stretches or mobility exercises during those breaks can help improve joint mobility and reduce the risk of injury.
Active recovery is a simple yet effective strategy that can enhance the quality of your workout and contribute to better fitness results in the long run.
