Her background in event coordination and her enthusiasm for entertainment bring invaluable talent to the team. Together, Nick and Jamie are a powerhouse duo, ready to deliver an unforgettable lineup of events that will keep you coming back for more.

So, what’s new? A May 9 Paint & Vino has been added to this month’s events, and watch the Eblast, Facebook, and GVR bulletin boards for additional summer pop-up parties. Once cooler temperatures arrive, the fall and winter will

deliver a host of fresh activities including tribute bands, celebrity impersonators, hypnotists, day trips, comedians, and pool parties.

First up on the fall agenda is a splash-tastic pool party at Las Campanas guaranteed to kick off the season with a wave of excitement! Picture basking in the Arizona sun, surrounded by laughter, live music, and good food as you soak up the evening fun on Friday, September 20. Trust us, folks, this event is hotter than the Arizona desert at high noon, so snag those tickets early!

Next, prepare to have your minds blown and your funny bones tickled with hypnotist Dominick DeCarlo’s HYPNOVIDEO™ show. Imagine a world where a pickleball pro transforms into a hypnotist extraordinaire, all managed by the former legendary mastermind behind Guns & Roses—talk about a mind-bending extravaganza! This high-octane show promises laughs, jawdropping moments, and a rollercoaster ride of entertainment for the whole family. With Dominick’s expertise and over 100 cruises under his belt, we’re in for a treat!

But wait, there’s more! Get ready to embark on unforgettable day trips to the picturesque wineries of Sonoita. Sip on fine wines, experience breathtaking scenery, and make memories that will last a lifetime as you explore charming vineyards.

Did You Know?

Moving from one GVR property to another GVR membership is attached via deed restriction to about 80% of Green Valley homes. That membership passes from owner to owner when a property sells—since your membership is attached to the property, you’ll need to obtain a new member card and GVR number once you move.

Did you know that as a GVR member, if you sell your primary GVR residence and move to another primary residence, you may request a refund of the membership change fee under certain conditions? To find out if you qualify, please contact GVR Member Services, Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm at 520-625-3440 or Membership@GVRec.org.

What’s going on with the first aid kits?

It costs a great deal of money to stock the large kits and we have about 30 of them out in the centers. In the coming weeks, the large kits will be replaced with affordable first aid kits we are all more familiar with—the sort with bandages, ointment, tape, ice packs, and the like.

Letter from the President

Well, looks like summer has decided to head our way. It is getting warmer here and some of you are taking off for the summer. I am a year-round member, so we will hold down the fort while you are gone.

There have been some policy changes on room use. Find the updated reservation information in the April GVR Now! and at GVRec.org.

We are still looking at what food/beverage services will be added to the new social center at Del Sol. The staff and board will let you all know when we have closure on this issue. This center will be our “first” true social center. It will have games, billiards, cards, and other social things available. You can just go sit with friends and play some mahjong or a game of cards if you choose to. We hope the recreation department will develop more fun things for you to do. Watch for news on this.

Committees have been set up, chairpersons are getting their members ready to meet and will be making monthly reports to the board. We will have a work session and a regular meeting in May and will see if we need a June meeting. Yep, again, watch for news on this.

As you can see, I was elected for another year as Board President. I will promise to listen to you, answer your questions, and to direct those I cannot answer to our CEO, Scott Somers, to get you the answers. Please be sure to send us your comments, come to committee meetings and join us for the monthly Board meetings.

Boxing is back this month!

We’re in this together

The Leisure Education team strives to offer classes that are interesting and engaging to GVR members.

Leisure education improves physical fitness, mental health, and social relationships. Taking classes also increases life satisfaction through enjoyment and personal growth. Perhaps you might try a new class this summer! It’s never too late to meet friends and explore a thoughtprovoking hobby.

Class offerings are only as good as the instructors who are available to teach. Green Valley is blessed with a multitude of retirees who have great stories to tell. Maybe you were a teacher or someone you know taught and is great at something like drawing, painting, gardening, or…? Share your wealth of knowledge and interests by teaching a class at GVR!

Tell me what classes you’d like to see offered in the GVR recreation catalog, and connect me with someone who might be an inspiring teacher. We’re in this together and I can use your help. Please send me a note at steves@gvrec.org.

The fun doesn’t stop there! Put on those dancing shoes to groove and move as we crank up the volume with more live music and energizing dances. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just like to let loose and have a good time, there’s something for everyone on the dance floor. So, grab your friends, hit the floor, and get ready to strut your stuff!

Winter offerings include holiday magic with a new twist:

• Tree lighting party

• Golf cart light parade at dusk

• Dancing with the Stars - Green Valley edition

• Shimmer – a high-energy show featuring aerial dancing

• Noon Year’s Eve party – usher in 2025 early with a dance party that starts at noon

Don’t just take our word for it—GVR legend, Regina Ford, gives Nick McLain her seal of approval:

“GVR is lucky to have Nick McLain as the new Events and Entertainment Manager. Nick comes to GVR with a rich history in the performing arts, not only on the stage, but behind the scenes. I am honored to have performed with Nick in Ballet Continentals’ The Nutcracker Ballet for nine years at the Sahuarita District Auditorium. Let’s just say that he is a superb dancer and that gift helped me stumble through the harder dance routines.

Fitness Tips

I am anxious to hear what Nick has planned for future entertainment and special events for GVR members, as well as those open to the public.

He and I will be working to schedule a performance featuring the GVR Valley Players, one of GVR’s oldest clubs, whose members are currently focusing on Readers Theater. I like the idea of a radio murder mystery with a dash of comedy thrown in to break the tension, plus rich desserts served before the murderer is revealed. We will see, but in the meantime, let’s welcome Nick!”

So, dear readers, buckle up and get ready for a season filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable experiences, courtesy of GVR’s Events and Entertainment team. With Nick and Jamie at the helm, the fun never stops—come aboard and let’s make some memories together!

Nicholas (Nick) McLain

GVR entertainment mastermind, curator of fun and frivolity, dog lover

Incorporating walking into your workout routine is a great way to boost overall fitness, burn calories, and improve cardiovascular health.

Quicker recovery: Instead of sitting or standing still during rest periods, take a short two-or-three-minute walk around the fitness center. Walking keeps your heart rate up and promotes blood flow to your muscles. This increased circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the muscles while removing waste products. As a result, muscle fibers recover better and quicker between sets.

Improved performance: You can also use the time between sets to mentally rehearse your next set. Visualize proper form, focus on the muscle group you’re training, and ask yourself if you are in fact challenging yourself. Mental rehearsal may enhance mind-muscle connection and improve overall performance.

Better results: Prior to resistance training, take a warmup walk for five to ten minutes. Individual preferences and goals vary, so choose strategies that align with your fitness objectives. Whether you’re aiming for muscle gain or fat loss, optimizing rest periods can make a significant difference in overall results. It also helps lower heart rate gradually and prevents sudden blood pooling in your legs.

If you have any questions or would like some suggestions, please contact GVR’s Fitness Coordinator Lee Smith at Lees@GVRec.org.
