Simple Ways to Manage Pain To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your step this winter: Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and keep your feet flat on the floor. Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong. One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat five times. Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating antiinflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and vegetables into your diet as much as possible. Say “Yes” to Sw eat and Achieving Your Fitness Goals (Fam ily Features) According to celebrity fitness trainer Jackie Warner, author of “ 10 Pounds in 10 Days,” m aking positive life changes and w orking up a good sw eat can be sim ple and easy to stick to all year long. • On March 3, 1887, Anne Sullivan begins teaching 6year-old Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing after a severe illness at the age of 19 months. Under Sullivan’s tutelage, the previously uncontrollable Keller flourished, eventually graduating from college and becoming a lecturer and activist. WINTER M ORE BRUTAL FOR ASTHM A & ALLERGY SUFFERERS As the w inter months drag on, c abin fever sets in for many people. How ever, being c ooped up inside is even harder for people suffering from asthma and allergies bec ause more time indoors means greater exposure to indoor allergens. Although mold, pet dander and dust mites are often blamed for sneezing and itc hy eyes this time of year, the National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w arns that w inter pests suc h as c oc kroac hes and rodents c an also be c ommon asthma and allergy triggers. “ The saliva, urine and fecal droppings from cockroaches and rodents contain allergen proteins know n to elicit allergic reactions and asthma attacks,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, medical advisor for the NPM A. “ During the w inter months, cockroaches and rodents seek shelter from the elements inside homes, thereby increasing allergic reactions among those people w ho suffer from allergies and asthma.” According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), cockroach allergens are present in 63 percent of American homes, and mouse allergens in 82 percent. M oreover, the number of homes containing cockroach allergens increases to as many as 78 to 98 percent in urban areas. “ It’s important for a person suffering from allergy or asthma symptoms to see his or her doctor. A medical professional w ill be able to test for a cockroach allergy, as w ell as other common allergens,” Parada advised. “ Although there is no cure for asthma, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. A doctor may recommend the use of antihistamines and decongestant medications to manage symptoms, and may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication and bronchodilators.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing. If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly every time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s. Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N. ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating. Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems. Occasional use with meals is reasonable. Other effective treatments for essential tremor include antiepilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. For serious essential tremor not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease. I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house. She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold. Her general practitioner has said that this is part of her disease. Is there anything else you have heard of that could explain this? -- C.L. ANSWER: I have seen a lot of people with dementia of all kinds, but I haven’t personally seen this degree of intolerance to cold. Her doctor may have more experience than I do, but I didn’t find much about it written in the medical literature. Every person is different, and it’s possible this is just part of how the dementia is affecting her. However, cold intolerance to this degree suggests some alternate possibilities. The most important and likely is low thyroid levels, which can also cause a condition that looks like dementia and would certainly make dementia worse. I bet her doctor has checked for it. If not done recently, she should have her thyroid level checked. Other, less-common causes include Addison’s disease (inability to make appropriate amounts of steroid hormones), iron deficiency, anemia from any cause and severe malnutrition. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. 10 ways to save 100 calories In order to lose 1 pound, you need to take in 3500 calories less than your body needs to maintain your current weight. Here are some easy ways to cut 100 calories from your diet. If you use all 10, that’s 1000 calories saved! 1. Replace the butter on your toast with an equal amount of jam 2. Snack on an orange instead of a 1 oz candy bar 3. Have 35 pretzel sticks in place of 1 oz dry roasted nuts 4. Replace 1 c sweetened applesauce with 1 cup unsweetened 5. Replace 2 biscuits with 2 dinner rolls 6. Eat 1/2c steamed broccoli instead of 1/2c broccoli with cheese sauce 7. Top celery sticks with 2 tbsp fat free cream cheese instead of regular 8. Eat 2 chocolate chip cookies instead of 5 9. Grill a cheese sandwich with non stick cooking spray instead of butter or margarine 10. Have 2 slices of cheese pizza instead of 2 slices pepperoni pizza

AVOID FLU, STICK TO W INTER-W ELLNESS ROUTINE Common sense is king. Common sense rules for hygiene are tw ic e as important during c old w eather. Be extra diligent about the basic s -- i.e., c over your mouth w hen sneezing or c oughing, and c arefully w ash your hands often. Remember, the more tired or w orn out you feel, the longer your immune system w ill take to respond. So, get plenty of sleep and drink lots of w ater.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that you go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Having a consistent sleep pattern helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle, helping you to sleep better at night. If you have trouble falling asleep within the first 20 minutes or so of going to bed, that’s okay - simply go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. Agonizing over falling asleep will only make it tougher for you to get the rest you need.

The 2011 Food and Health Survey, commissioned by the International Food Information Council Foundation (IFICF), found that approximately half of Americans perceive their overall diet as at least “somewhat healthful,” the World Health Organization ranks the United States as 18th (out of 153 countries) in the world for obesity and 28th in the world for cases of diabetes.

Men that look no further than their outsides, think health an appurtenance unto life, and quarrel with their constitutions for being sick; but I that have examined the parts of man, and know upon what tender filaments that fabric hangs, do wonder that we are not always so; and considering the thousand doors that lead to death, do thank my God that we can die but once. ~Thomas Browne

Congratulations to our

Pen-a-Poem WINNER Wendy Annal of Fairport An Immigrant’s Song I chose this country as my own I didn’t run away. I can go back. I can return. But here I choose to stay. I’ve heard the question many times, “What brings you to THIS town?” The eyebrows raised, the mouth ajar. They look me up and down. “But Rochester” I say with glee, “Is where I WANT to be. Ontario. The Finger Lakes. And good old Susan B. George Eastman here made history. The photographic kind. The Lilac Fest, the Garbage Plate... There’s so much one can find! The Strong museum of national fame, The gorgeous Genesee. High Falls, Low Falls, and Letchworth Park, And also Frederick D. I even like the winter When snow and ice abound. When after months of hunkering down, Geese bring the sweetest sound! With vineyards on the sunny slopes, And corn on all the rest, I just can’t pick the single thing That I really like the best. So I think I’ll stick around for good I want to see it all. This Flour City shouts my name, And I gladly heed her call.

“A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe, helps to extend everyone’s knowledge of himself and the world around him.” ~ Dylan Thomas

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. The Harlem Globetrotters have a big fan at ByronBergen Elementary School, where Zeus McClurkin talked to students about character.

Anemia and aging Aging is accompanied by a number of physical changes. Some of these changes, such as vision impairment or loss of hearing, are anticipated, while others may arrive unexpectedly. One condition many adults unexpectedly encounter is anemia. While anemia is common in older adults and its prevalence increases with age, it is not a condition that is widely considered part of the aging process. Anemia is often a symptom of a hidden problem that needs to be addressed promptly. Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting more than three million Americans, says the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The American Society of Hematology notes that anemia is characterized by insufficient levels of red blood cells in the blood. Anemia also occurs when red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the various organs and tissues throughout the body, are not functioning properly. Very often the signs of anemia are overlooked or go unnoticed until a blood test determines low hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (HCT) concentrations. Some people discover they have anemia as they attempt to donate blood, at which time their red blood cell count is found to be inadequate. When the body lacks oxygen, any number of the following symptoms may be experienced: · weakness · dizziness · extreme fatigue · shortness of breath · fast or irregular heartbeat MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 6, 1899, the patent office in Berlin registers

Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of Friedrich Bayer & Co. Acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees. Grandparents helping to raise grandchildren The relationship may cause animosity. If you are offering care to one set of grandchildren and are not doing so to another, it could strain the relationships among your children. Think about the larger factor before agreeing to being the caregiver.

Anemia is not usually discovered unless a blood test is ordered. Its symptoms can mimic other conditions.

· pale or yellow skin · cold hands or feet Frequently, existing disorders or conditions, such as congestive heart failure, are made worse by anemia. But unless doctors specifically consider anemia as a possible cause of symptoms, its presence can go undiagnosed. The American Academy of Family Physicians says the most common causes of anemia among older men and women include chronic diseases and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding, and myelodysplastic syndrome are other causes of anemia. The main way to treat anemia is to discover its source and reverse the outcomes. For instance, a gastrointestinal bleed may need to be repaired. If iron deficiency is the source of the anemia, iron supplements may be prescribed. Many methods to correct anemia involve trial and error and experimentation, especially when the source of the anemia is unknown. Anemia is a condition that can affect aging adults but does not need to be accepted as a natural consequence of aging. Correct diagnosis and treatment can mitigate symptoms.

Wheels for Carol Carol Ortiz, a quadriplegic, is the ultimate volunteer, an inspiration to all who have had the opportunity to know her. Carol surmounts her life challenges every day with determined optimism and incredible courage. In October 2014, Carol was in an unfortunate accident. A seventeen-year old driver hit Carol in a side impact collision at an intersection, totaling her wheelchairadapted van. As a result, any independence or ability she had to manage her life was taken away. Carol is now entirely homebound and must rely on others to accomplish everyday tasks. Despite her challenges, it still is not uncommon for Carol to donate over 50 hours each week to volunteerism. She gives her phone number freely, telling people, “I’m just a phone call away.” Whether it is lending a sympathetic ear or directing someone on how and where to get the help they need, she says simply, “Just call me.” Currently, Carol works with Hope House at Holy Trinity Church. She schedules rides to doctor’s appointments for senior citizens through the Dove Ministry. Carol also coordinates their bread ministry which distributes day old bread and rolls to seniors throughout Webster. Lastly, through Hope House, Carol directs the redistribution of donated used furniture to area residents. Carol is also an active volunteer for the Invest in Youth Campaign at the Bay View YMCA. She organizes weekly Bingo at Monarch Senior Living on Holt Road. Most notably, Visiting Nurse Service Meals on Wheels recently honored Carol with a 21 Years of Service Award. Over the last year, Carol and her friends have managed to raise over half of the monies needed to purchase a refurbished “close to

Hegedor’ns will be accepting donations on Carol’s behalf at our service desk, by mail or by phone. Please make your check payable to Hegedorn’s Inc. with a memo note to Carol Ortiz. Credit card donations may also be made at our Service Desk or by calling our store and asking for Noreen Roesser at 585671-4450 x-108. All donors will be graciously acknowledged and properly receipted. Your donation is an opportunity to make a life-changing difference for one individual within the Webster community - someone who has given and continues to give back to the community every day.

I am a retired ambulance corps volunteer and take issue with the concern about ambulance staff using the ambulance to make food runs. If I used my own personal vehicle to make a food run that could add an additional 10 minutes to a response. If you were having a heart attack, would you want the ambulance there in 6-10 minutes or possibly 20 minutes? When we are picking up food, we are on duty, ready to run out the door if a call comes in. Further, by being out in the community we remind residents that our service is available for their emergency. Exposure i.e. community events, not just in an emergency, has a very positive impact on residents. Next time you see an ambulance crew getting lunch, thank them for their service and tell them to enjoy their meal.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2016

Reading the vent regarding the ambulance being used to pick up food made me angry. First let me point out that that at one time or another ambulance, fire and police use their work vehicles to pick up food when they are on their shift as I have been in restaurants when they have walked in to pick up their order to go. At times they are on 10, 12 or overnight shifts and as long as they stay in the area they are paid to cover I see no problem with them picking up a meal and as a volunteer they give their personal time to serve their community and to suggest that they use their own vehicles to pick up food means you run the risk of our emergency services being without enough people to cover a call which could put people’s lives at risk! Now ask yourself is it worth it?! I think Not! Typical of today’s society...judge without knowing what you are talking about. I am not on the ambulance but I work closely with them. They do NOT load up and take ambulance to get lunch; they are coming back from taking a call. And remember they are VOLUNTEERING their time and you are begrudging them from stopping to grab food?! I have to wonder... what do you give back???

How to ask for a raise - Think about how you w ill react if the raise is turned dow n. Perhaps asking for a raise is the last step before looking for a new job. M aybe you have a com fortable enough relationship w ith your boss that you can ask w hen m ight be the right tim e for a raise, or w hen you can broach the subject again. Also, there is the opportunity to negotiate: If I cannot get a pay increase, are there any other benefits I can receive, such as better health insurance, gym m em bership, covered child care expenses, or som e other benefit that isn’t financial?

Now adays, few er and few er people rely on printed documents to get through the w orkday. Advances w ith regard to computer technology has made it just as easy to read documents on a computer screen as it is to do so on a sheet of paper. If you’re among the last to embrace this grow ing trend, think of the environment before you print your next document and opt to read documents on your desktop rather than printing them out. Instead of leaving notes for cow orkers, send them e-mails instead. This saves paper, w hich in turn w ill save your company money, and it also reduces your reliance on ink that can potentially harm the environment. W hen making presentations, do so using slides rather than printing materials and handing them out in a packet. E-mail cow orkers the presentation in advance and print out a single copy for the meeting rather than printing multiple copies. If you and your cow orkers simply must print documents, try to use tw osided printing and copying to reduce your paper usage. And urge your office manager to order supplies made from recycled materials and discard of any potentially harmful products, including ink cartridges, in an eco-friendly w ay.
