Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.
One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Deb Bower
Exploring the ‘In-Between Places’ and Helping Our Region Rediscover the Beauty in Our Own Backyard
ARTICLE BY KATRINA M. RANDALL PHOTOS BY DEB BOWER
One day, Deb Bower was writing down day-trip ideas for her Girl Scout troop when a co-worker suggested she create a website around her many local travels.
As a writer, photographer, and web designer, it felt like a natural progression for the Scottsville resident. Starting with a post about the Skaneateles Dickens Christmas, Bower launched a passion project website in 2017, called Day Trips Around Rochester, cataloging her regional destinations with colorful prose and detailed descriptions. Since then, she’s gone on hundreds of field trips, published hundreds of local guides on her website, and shared thousands of social posts and emails with readers.
Growing up in the Rochester area, Bower’s father worked in standards at Kodak, so she o en tested cameras and film for quality assurance. She says, “ at early exposure to photography stayed with me.” Her love of photography has evolved over the years, but instead of having a favorite thing or spot to capture within her frame, she likes to immortalize moments, saying, “I’m drawn to moments that evoke a strong sense of place—those quiet, overlooked
details that o en fade into the background of daily life. rough photography and storytelling, I love bringing these hidden gems into the spotlight— whether it’s a tucked-away trail, a rural waterfall, or a familiar street seen in a new light.”
From featuring breweries and bookstores to exploring area towns and nature destinations, Bower has created a comprehensive resource for local daytrippers and tourists seeking things to do and see in the Rochester region and beyond.
Of course, every artist needs inspiration and a method to find and document that inspiration. For Bower, that means careful planning. But she also likes to wander with what she calls “planned spontaneity.” Sometimes she plans trips around a specific place while other times she stops when something piques her interest, saying, “I choose a direction and follow my curiosity, stopping at ice cream shops, waterfalls, or historic markers along the way. I take notes, capture photos, and collect local stories to weave into my writing. It’s a bootson-the-ground, hands-on process, supported by intense digital research.”
“I love bringing these hidden gems into the spotlight— whether it’s a tucked-away trail, a rural waterfall, or a familiar street seen in a new light.”
DEB BOWER
In the beginning, Bower studied maps for blue specks that indicated bodies of water, and she’d search for them. Taking the road less traveled allowed her to discover new places, something she’s grown to deeply appreciate, finding joy in the experience.
Since Bower is a triple threat (writer, designer, and photographer), it was a natural evolution when she transformed her hobby into a book in 2023 called Day Trips Around Rochester, New York, winning CITY Magazine’s Best of Rochester—Best Published Literary Work of 2023. In 2025, she published a second edition that includes new day-trip destinations. “Fun fact: My publishing imprint, Gevany Publishing, is a portmanteau of Genesee Valley New York.”
As someone well-versed in the region’s bountiful offerings, Deb finds it tough to identify just one favorite destination. Travel is personal, a er all, and the season and activities a person is looking to do on any given day should all factor in, saying, for instance, “In late October, I love Letchworth’s dramatic Genesee River gorge paired with the Autism Nature Trail’s serenity. Summertime means quintessential Erie Canal and Finger Lakes villages and places like the Eternal Flame Trail, Grimes Glen, and Chimney Bluffs that feel almost otherworldly. I’m drawn to interesting geologic features, learning about history and heritage, discovering panoramic vistas, and experiencing exquisite gardens and arboretums, such as Highland Park, Mount Hope Cemetery, and Linwood Gardens.”
With the Erie Canal’s bicentennial this year, Bower plans to spend a lot oftimeexploringthecanaltownsandthe“in-betweenplaces,”including Homestead for Hope, a nonprofit community farm in Ogen, citing her passion for getting people out and exploring their community. She says, “My goal is to help people rediscover the beauty in their own backyard and notice what they might otherwise miss on their everyday routes.”

versus safetysometimes it’s impossible to have both when it comes to tech devices. There are more smart devices than we could have imagined 10 years ago, and every day brings something new. We have smart door locks, thermostats, refrigerators, indoor and outdoor security cameras, televisions, cellphones, light bulbs, speakers and wall plugs.
Whether it’s data breaches, surveillance, intrusions, hijack of your device or outright cyber attacks and theft of your information, smart devices can make you vulnerable if they are hacked. Take smart thermostats, for example. Those smart gadgets track all kinds of things about you. Scariest of all is that they keep track of when you leave home and when you come back, information that a thief would like to have.
If you want a smart device, be sure you understand the downside and the risks. Keep the software updated, use strong passwords and understand the settings, especially on any device with a camera or microphone. Your smart television speakers could work in the reverse and capture the sounds in the room, for example.
Before you buy a smart device, or to learn more about devices you might already have, go online to search for “dangers of smart devices.”

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.
(NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions:
WhatToDo
• Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect.
• Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season.
• Turn off space heaters before leavingaroomorgoingtosleep.
• Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home.
• Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly.
• Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comesfromADT—keepingyour family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW
Be brief yet effective
A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE
Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.
Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

WAYS TO COMMEMORATE MOTHER’S DAY WHEN MOM HAS PASSED AWAY
Enjoy your favorite childhood meal. Whether Mom was a master chef or couldn’t boil water, there’s bound to be a meal you associate with her. If that special meal is Chinese takeout or a slow-cooked roast, enjoy it on Mother’s Day in her honor.
Avoid “final sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. However, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges. Unless you know Mom will like what you pick out, avoid the “final sale” racks in favor of items that can be returned or exchanged.
