FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 2016

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Sleepless Nights DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? -- D.R. ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to. Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years. After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T. ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Common causes of poor vision Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision. The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.” Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition. Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones. • Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window. • Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it Precautionary measures older travelers must consider Contact Information W hile a vacation is an escape for many people, you don’t w ant to escape from the w orld entirely. contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail. • Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk. • Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention. • Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair. Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.

Twice now, driving on public roads, cars are stopped by parents standing in the road begging for money for their kids’ cheerleading groups. Big threatening amazon type women stand in the middle of the road and push money containers into drivers’ faces, while mean spirited hulk type men stop cars on the other side of the road. Come on parents, pay for your own kids’activities instead of harassing motorists for money. The town should not allow this begging on public roads. If cheerleaders need money, let them work for it. Motorists should not be forced into giving money by threatening parents shoving money containers in their faces. Being a school bus driver I see this a lot and it needs to stop. Drivers--stop making new rules for the road. Do not stop in the road and flag a bus to proceed if they are turning left when you are going straight. YOU have the right of way--use it. You may think you are being helpful but you are not. You are creating a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. There are rules for a reason-so

FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 2016

everyone knows what the other driver is doing. When you do this no one knows what’s going on. Why are you making your own driving rules? I will (and have) sat for as long as it takes for you to do what you are supposed to be doing. Unless you have the authority to wave me on, then stop doing it.

To the long-haired, bearded, dirty fellow cheering on the team, GROW UP!! Let the coaches coach!! You not only look like an idiot, you are acting like an idiot. Really, who are you trying to impress? Also, brush your teeth and shower. You are not fooling anyone when you smell like a special chimney!!

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

Jane Austen Afternoon Success for DEAR Program

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL:

Should stores stop selling products that contain plastic microbeads?

Yes! They are terrible for the environment. Why bother? Products will still be sold at other businesses. Maybe. We should also update our wastewater treatment plants. No. The 2017 ban on microbead manufacturing will take care of it.

Poll ends 1/12/16 Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Online Poll Question We’ll publish the results in next week’s Penny Saver.

Poll results 1/5/16 Is Facebook’s plan for free global internet access good for developing countries like India? Absolutely! 12.5% (2 votes)

Legacy at Village Wood and the Penfield Community Center teamed up to bring Penfield residents an afternoon back in the era of Jane Austen. Fashions were modeled along a catwalk of Austen-era wear and a 19th century dancing demonstration was performed by members of a weekly dancing group. Costumes were provided by Lisa Brown of Regency Rentals.

The event helped raise money for the Penfield Daytime Education at Recreation (DEAR) program, which funds senior programs, including lectures, parties and get-togethers. Legacy at Village Wood, an independent senior living community in Penfield, provided tasty treats for the event, which drew in more than 35 people on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Comment of the week: I think it’s motivated by altruism, mixed with a little bit of greed.

For any questions on the DEAR program, visit the Penfield Community Center off Baird Rd. For questions on independent senior living at Legacy at Village Wood, contact Allison Case at (585) 381-4210.

Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel. I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s. I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels! Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

By follow ing a few tips, anyone can avoid hat hair: • M ake sure hair is completely dry before donning a hat. Damp hair can dry in the shape of the hat. • Use an anti-frizz serum to tame flyaw ays that occur w hen hats are removed. • Choose a w ell-fitting hat. Hats that are too small can cause dents and creases. • People w ith long hair can pull their hair back into a high bun before putting on a hat. This w ill prevent hair from flattening. Winter w eather may be harsh, but there are w ays to conquer the cold in style.

The blog should not be used as a tool to discuss your personal life, but rather to express your thoughts on topics relevant to the career you hope to pursue. Dem onstrating an understanding or even just a passion for the industry can be a great w ay to show prospective em ployers that you are looking for a career and not just a job. To take something from a person and keep it for oneself: that is robbery. To take something from one person and then turn it over to another in exchange for as much money as you can get: that is business. Robbery is so much more stupid, since it is satisfied with a single, frequently dangerous profit; whereas in business it can be doubled without danger. ~Octave Mirbeau
