Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities.

According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members.

Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read about using the immune system’s response as a mechanism to battle cancer (such as brain and pancreatic) and to reduce the devastating impact that cancer and its treatment has on humans. I understand current drug trials show promising results. How do doctors and scientists use the immune system to treat cancer? -- J.W.

WORDS FOR NEW YEAR’S DAY

ANSWER: The concept of using the immune system to treat cancer is old, but the ability to do so has dramatically improved in the past few years. There are a few specific types of treatments that I’d like to highlight:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are treatments that release inhibitions on the immune system. (These “strengthen” the immune system, which has beneficial but also potentially toxic effects.) For melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these treatments have revolutionized treatment and led to dramatically improved outcomes in people whose melanoma has spread. Response rates are up to 60% in a disease where the prognosis used to be dismal.

The unleashed immune system can destroy cancer very effectively, but it also can attack healthy organs, with many people (between 10% to 60% depending on drugs and doses) developing damage to the skin, lungs, liver, thyroid, colon and heart. These toxicities range from mild to life-threatening.

The body’s own immune cells can be genetically engineered to kill cancer cells. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) can be specifically changed to recognize cancer cells. This can lead to complete remission with some cancers, especially some leukemias and lymphomas. Unfortunately, they can also attack the body, leading to neurological damage that can be very serious.

Developing cancer vaccines is a highly promising strategy for personalizing the immune system to attack a person’s own cancer.

Although the United States has recently made dramatic cuts to its support of this research, researchers in other countries continue to study this. It can be used in combination with other traditional or immune-based treatments.

The immune system can be used to help treat cancer effectively, but there is still the potential for serious side effects. __________ Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Digital Literacy Expands to Livingston County B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

Technology might be more available than ever, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to use to complete essential tasks. With phone updates, new social media platforms, and online portals for managing healthcare and government benefits, there’s a lot to know to navigate the digital world. The Digital Literacy program at Literacy Rochester connects tech-savvy volunteers with those who need a hand in working through computer- or phone-based tasks. Digital Literacy has regular volunteers at 27 libraries in Monroe, Wayne, and Ontario Counties and will expand to four libraries in Livingston County in 2026.

Volunteers are trained by Digital Literacy to provide one-on-one assistance with all sorts of digital tasks. Lisa Roe, the coordinator for the Digital Literacy program, says, “Technology always changes. With updates, there’s always something new. Things get hidden.

Getting support and another set of eyes can be really helpful.”

Nick, a volunteer at the Palmyra Library, finds that his work with Digital Literacy helps him teach others, but also learn new things himself, saying, “I have always had a passion for service because every person has their own skills and areas in which they are less skilled. With Literacy Rochester, I can serve others around my work schedule and can share my technology and research skills with customers while learning things from them.”

The technological needs of Digital Literacy clients varies greatly from location to location, but overall, volunteers focus on foundational skills that support a wide variety of technology tasks. This might include making a resume, using email, or setting up social media. Navigating phone system updates is one of the biggest asks volunteers receive.

Nick says, “Most often my Palmyra customers are looking for help with adapting their previous ways of doing things to their new/updated phone or computer, such as accessing email, managing photos, and navigating programs or apps.”

The Livingston County locations will gradually add shifts for one-on-one appointments throughout the next year, as Digital Literacy becomes more established in the area and finds and trains volunteers. Roe says Digital Literacy volunteers aren’t required to know everything about the latest tech offhand. She says “You need to know how to navigate, how to be patient, how to work with and explain things to people at their level. You give them the confidence to search for the information they need.”

Another major area of assistance is in setting up and navigating online portals for medical information or government benefits. The healthcare portals have been particularly important for people in rural areas. Roe says, “For people who live rurally, especially when it’s snowy, we can teach them how to use the patient portal to schedule a telehealth appointment, talk to a doctor, or see their test results. This is one of the places we really help people.”

As Digital Literacy grows, more and more people will have the resources and support they need to find their way in a complex and technology-forward world. “Even if it is a small thing individuals are asking for help with, I don’t want them to feel like they should have known already,” says Roe. “This program changes lives. We help people apply for jobs, connect with their families, schedule telehealth appointments, and become more confident. Many people tell us they could not have done this without someone sitting next to them.”

Digital Literacy was founded as an outgrowth of Literacy Rochester. The parent organization was founded in 1964 with the goal of ensuring everyone had the ability to read, write, and speak English. They added math literacy programs to support the growing number of people pursuing GEDs. Digital Literacy developed when the organization realized how much help students still needed with technological tasks. Roe says, “We found students didn’t have the tech skills to go forward in their careers. Over the years, the program has done nothing but grow.”

In the 2024-2025 year, Digital Literacy volunteers helped over 1,700 individuals across their existing sites. With their expansion into four Livingston County libraries in 2026, Digital Literacy hopes to serve over 2,000 people through this program.

If I could just apologize If I could just apologize to the very nice older couple that visited “our” bargain basement store on Monday, December 8th from Brighton. They were obviously seniors getting along together well. That’s so nice to see!

A coworker and I found the square new rug which they’d been looking for. They wanted blue colored, not white. Unfortunately, when I suggested buying slippers so the rug would stay clean, I remembered a slip and fall I’d had and ran out to the front door and overreacted. Please, customers, come back to our store, I apologize from the heart, it was “a senior moment!”

The city speed limit is 30. Why post that when so many ignore the speed limit? Some do 40-50, zigzagging, no turn signals, no stopping at stop signs, cutting others off when it’s “right on red when clear,” etc., etc. Will the police please monitor, hopefully every day, the main road? Visibility is a deterrent to at least slow them down.

Drivers & pets To add to your vent, as a retired flag person, I saw this many times. My added advice is, if you ever get in an accident, and your air bags go off, how will your pet fare?

One car has no plates; one is wrapped in tarp. The rest get driven daily then back on the lawn. One house has now added a second car, giving their place that car-lot look.

To wedge it in they blast over the curb and sidewalk to get that second car to fit. Over time, muddy ruts have formed and walkers have to go to the road or get mud all over their shoes.

People still care about the appearance of their homes and neighborhood. This parking practice kills the grass, looks very junky, and the weight of a car or two sitting on underground service lines could possibly damage them. Apparently, it is against village code but code enforcement says they don’t have time to deal with this and suggest calling the police.

DEAR CHASE: You have a great advantage in that your boyfriend’s dog is already used to living with cats.

Before your move-in date, gradually get the cats familiar with Gabriel by bringing him over for a few hours, several days per week if possible. Before his arrival, create a safe space for the cats where they can retreat, because when a big, goofy dog lumbers in the door, they will most likely run for cover.

Once Gabe is settled and calm, have him lie down, with your boyfriend keeping hold of his leash. Bring each cat out, one by one, in your arms, and calmly approach him. When the cat tenses up, hisses or tries to escape, stop and take a few steps back. Stay far enough back that your cat remains calm in your arms but can see the dog. After a few minutes, take your cat back to their safe space and repeat with the other cat.

Repeat this process on each visit to minimize stress and trauma for the cats and the dog. Continue after you move in together. It may take weeks or months for them to be comfortable with each other, but a calm, consistent approach will help.

Finding Help This Year Now that we have our new Social Security benefit amount and see, after the Medicare Part B deduction, just how little it’s going to be, many of us are on the edge of panic -- or at least very worried. We barely made it through last year, month by month. What are we going to do this year when the prices are continuing to rise but our Social Security didn’t?

Last year the average Social Security benefit was $2,015, and this year it’s slated to be $2,071, up about $56 per month.

After deducting the $185 Part B last year, the average benefit was $1,830 per month. This year Part B has gone up to $202, making $1,869 the average benefit. Doing the math, it means that we have $39 more per month to spend.

And let’s not forget that the Part B deductible has also gone up, now at $283 per year before Medicare kicks in.

The National Council on Aging has created BenefitsCheckUp (BenefitsCheckUp.org), which is a one-stop shop for finding help programs. There are 2,000 of them in their database, and it’s free to use. You only need to enter your ZIP code and select the type of benefits you want to look at. Then you’ll answer a few questions and be presented with a list of options that includes contact information and tells you how to apply for the help.
