If I could just apologize If I could just apologize to the very nice older couple that visited “our” bargain basement store on Monday, December 8th from Brighton. They were obviously seniors getting along together well. That’s so nice to see!

A coworker and I found the square new rug which they’d been looking for. They wanted blue colored, not white. Unfortunately, when I suggested buying slippers so the rug would stay clean, I remembered a slip and fall I’d had and ran out to the front door and overreacted. Please, customers, come back to our store, I apologize from the heart, it was “a senior moment!”

The city speed limit is 30. Why post that when so many ignore the speed limit? Some do 40-50, zigzagging, no turn signals, no stopping at stop signs, cutting others off when it’s “right on red when clear,” etc., etc. Will the police please monitor, hopefully every day, the main road? Visibility is a deterrent to at least slow them down.

Drivers & pets To add to your vent, as a retired flag person, I saw this many times. My added advice is, if you ever get in an accident, and your air bags go off, how will your pet fare?

Actions give neighborhood trashy look People, please reconsider parking or storing cars on the front lawn. The practice has grown from one house to multiple houses. One car has no plates; one is wrapped in tarp. The rest get driven daily then back on the lawn. One house has now added a second car, giving their place that car-lot look.

To wedge it in they blast over the curb and sidewalk to get that second car to fit. Over time, muddy ruts have formed and walkers have to go to the road or get mud all over their shoes.

People still care about the appearance of their homes and neighborhood. This parking practice kills the grass, looks very junky, and the weight of a car or two sitting on underground service lines could possibly damage them. Apparently, it is against village code but code enforcement says they don’t have time to deal with this and suggest calling the police.

Using and Strengthening the Immune System To Prevent CANCER DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read about using the immune system’s response as a mechanism to battle cancer (such as brain and pancreatic) and to reduce the devastating impact that cancer and its treatment has on humans. I understand current drug trials show promising results. How do doctors and scientists use the immune system to treat cancer? -- J.W.

Q. A.

ANSWER: The concept of using the immune system to treat cancer is old, but the ability to do so has dramatically improved in the past few years. There are a few specific types of treatments that I’d like to highlight:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are treatments that release inhibitions on the immune system. (These “strengthen” the immune system, which has beneficial but also potentially toxic effects.) For melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these treatments have revolutionized treatment and led to dramatically improved outcomes in people whose melanoma has spread. Response rates are up to 60% in a disease where the prognosis used to be dismal.

The unleashed immune system can destroy cancer very effectively, but it also can attack healthy organs, with many people (between 10% to 60% depending on drugs and doses) developing damage to the skin, lungs, liver, thyroid, colon and heart. These toxicities range from mild to life-threatening.

The body’s own immune cells can be genetically engineered to kill cancer cells. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) can be specifically changed to recognize cancer cells. This can lead to complete remission with some cancers, especially some leukemias and lymphomas. Unfortunately, they can also attack the body, leading to neurological damage that can be very serious.

Developing cancer vaccines is a highly promising strategy for personalizing the immune system to attack a person’s own cancer.

Although the United States has recently made dramatic cuts to its support of this research, researchers in other countries continue to study this. It can be used in combination with other traditional or immune-based treatments.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily.

These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility.

Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright.

Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception.

Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals.

Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet.

Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice.

Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick.

According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887.

Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance.

Even though snow is more common in northern elevations and cold regions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls.

While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season.

Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low.

Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories.

Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

Eagle Star Housing Helps Veterans B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

Since 2012, Eagle Star Housing has been providing local veterans with a stable place to live when they no longer have secure housing of their own. Its first residence was in Pembroke, a transitional housing program funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs intended to give veterans a short-term stay while they search for permanent housing. The nonprofit now has an additional transitional housing location in Spencerport and a Safe Haven, for the most vulnerable veterans, in Farmington, as well as several permanent housing programs supported by a state grant.

Mike Cefaly, who served in the Army National Guard for 23 years, stayed at the Pembroke residence several years ago when he could no longer afford to maintain his parents’ house and had to sell it. He received help looking for apartments and moved into Eagle Star’s permanent supportive housing program in Batavia, which opened in 2020 thanks to a grant from New York State’s Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI). He’s been there for three years. He enjoys events put on by Eagle Star within the building and has gone on group trips to Niagara Falls, car shows, and other outings.

Cefaly meets up with friends to ride ATVs and hopes to find a new place closer to where he can ride more often.

Programs like Eagle Star’s are a key factor in why homelessness among veterans has steadily declined for years. Liz Doll, vice president of housing at Eagle Star, says, “The VA has taken great care over the years in making sure veterans are housed. A lot of resources have been put into it.” According to most recent data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, veteran homelessness reached a record low in 2024, even as inflation and limited housing stock continue to make housing instability a major nationwide issue. Doll, a licensed clinical social worker, says Eagle Star’s programs try to address some of those issues.

She also spends time crocheting and visiting her granddaughters.

Wallace, who grew up in Batavia, says the Eagle Star staff has been really committed to getting her the support she needs. She’s been just as dedicated to making the most of the resources she now has access to, noting it takes mutual effort for a program like Eagle Star to work. “You have to put something in to get something out of it,” she says.

Eagle Star’s transitional housing programs are intended for shorter stays, usually around six months. Residents only get a bed there through a referral from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and they share common areas like the kitchen. In a permanent supportive housing program, veterans live in rent-subsidized and fully-furnished apartments with support like medical transportation, resource referrals, and community events available within the building. There’s no limit to how long residents can stay in the permanent program, and referrals

All of Eagle Star’s residents must meet specific requirements set by state and federal agencies that fund the housing programs. In addition to government grants, Eagle Star Housing receives support from community donors and fundraisers too, which helps them build additional residences. Doll raves about the community’s generosity, saying, “I’ve worked in mental health for over 25 years in this area. It’s always been a very giving community for veterans.”

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution.

For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

Once Gabe is settled and calm, have him lie down, with your boyfriend keeping hold of his leash. Bring each cat out, one by one, in your arms, and calmly approach him. When the cat tenses up, hisses or tries to escape, stop and take a few steps back. Stay far enough back that your cat remains calm in your arms but can see the dog. After a few minutes, take your cat back to their safe space and repeat with the other cat.

Repeat this process on each visit to minimize stress and trauma for the cats and the dog. Continue after you move in together. It may take weeks or months for them to be comfortable with each other, but a calm, consistent approach will help.

Finding Help This Year Now that we have our new Social Security benefit amount and see, after the Medicare Part B deduction, just how little it’s going to be, many of us are on the edge of panic -- or at least very worried. We barely made it through last year, month by month. What are we going to do this year when the prices are continuing to rise but our Social Security didn’t?

Last year the average Social Security benefit was $2,015, and this year it’s slated to be $2,071, up about $56 per month.

After deducting the $185 Part B last year, the average benefit was $1,830 per month. This year Part B has gone up to $202, making $1,869 the average benefit. Doing the math, it means that we have $39 more per month to spend.

And let’s not forget that the Part B deductible has also gone up, now at $283 per year before Medicare kicks in.

We need help.

The National Council on Aging has created BenefitsCheckUp (BenefitsCheckUp.org), which is a one-stop shop for finding help programs. There are 2,000 of them in their database, and it’s free to use. (NAPSI)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore.

Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible.

Start Early and Shovel Often It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed.

Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day.

Maintain Your Equipment If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late.

On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow.

Shovel the Right Way Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow.

Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways.
