HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health.

Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.

Using and Strengthening the Immune System To Prevent CANCER

Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read about using the immune system’s response as a mechanism to battle cancer (such as brain and pancreatic) and to reduce the devastating impact that cancer and its treatment has on humans. I understand current drug trials show promising results. How do doctors and scientists use the immune system to treat cancer? -- J.W.

Q. A.

ANSWER: The concept of using the immune system to treat cancer is old, but the ability to do so has dramatically improved in the past few years. There are a few specific types of treatments that I’d like to highlight:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are treatments that release inhibitions on the immune system. (These “strengthen” the immune system, which has beneficial but also potentially toxic effects.) For melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these treatments have revolutionized treatment and led to dramatically improved outcomes in people whose melanoma has spread. Response rates are up to 60% in a disease where the prognosis used to be dismal.

Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.

Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians.

Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

The unleashed immune system can destroy cancer very effectively, but it also can attack healthy organs, with many people (between 10% to 60% depending on drugs and doses) developing damage to the skin, lungs, liver, thyroid, colon and heart. These toxicities range from mild to life-threatening.

The body’s own immune cells can be genetically engineered to kill cancer cells. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) can be specifically changed to recognize cancer cells. This can lead to complete remission with some cancers, especially some leukemias and lymphomas. Unfortunately, they can also attack the body, leading to neurological damage that can be very serious.

Developing cancer vaccines is a highly promising strategy for personalizing the immune system to attack a person’s own cancer.

Although the United States has recently made dramatic cuts to its support of this research, researchers in other countries continue to study this. It can be used in combination with other traditional or immune-based treatments.

Introducing Dogs and Cats DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two laid-back cats, my boyfriend has a big sweet dog named “Gabriel,” and we are moving in together in a few weeks. Gabe is very well socialized and he spent his puppyhood in a big house with cats, so I’m not worried about him adapting to a new situation. But I’m not sure how my cats will react. How can I make sure life will be low-stress together? -- Chase T. in Atlanta

DEAR CHASE: You have a great advantage in that your boyfriend’s dog is already used to living with cats.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS

Before your move-in date, gradually get the cats familiar with Gabriel by bringing him over for a few hours, several days per week if possible. Before his arrival, create a safe space for the cats where they can retreat, because when a big, goofy dog lumbers in the door, they will most likely run for cover.

Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.

Once Gabe is settled and calm, have him lie down, with your boyfriend keeping hold of his leash. Bring each cat out, one by one, in your arms, and calmly approach him. When the cat tenses up, hisses or tries to escape, stop and take a few steps back. Stay far enough back that your cat remains calm in your arms but can see the dog. After a few minutes, take your cat back to their safe space and repeat with the other cat.

Repeat this process on each visit to minimize stress and trauma for the cats and the dog. Continue after you move in together. It may take weeks or months for them to be comfortable with each other, but a calm, consistent approach will help.

If I could just apologize If I could just apologize to the very nice older couple that visited “our” bargain basement store on Monday, December 8th from Brighton. They were obviously seniors getting along together well. That’s so nice to see!

A coworker and I found the square new rug which they’d been looking for. They wanted blue colored, not white. Unfortunately, when I suggested buying slippers so the rug would stay clean, I remembered a slip and fall I’d had and ran out to the front door and overreacted. Please, customers, come back to our store, I apologize from the heart, it was “a senior moment!”

The city speed limit is 30. Why post that when so many ignore the speed limit? Some do 40-50, zigzagging, no turn signals, no stopping at stop signs, cutting others off when it’s “right on red when clear,” etc., etc. Will the police please monitor, hopefully every day, the main road? Visibility is a deterrent to at least slow them down.

Drivers & pets To add to your vent, as a retired flag person, I saw this many times. My added advice is, if you ever get in an accident, and your air bags go off, how will your pet fare?

Or, if a small breed, it could be killed. Think about it.

Actions give neighborhood trashy look People, please reconsider parking or storing cars on the front lawn. The practice has grown from one house to multiple houses. One car has no plates; one is wrapped in tarp. The rest get driven daily then back on the lawn. One house has now added a second car, giving their place that car-lot look.

The kindergarteners conceptualized the little monsters, giving their creations names and backstories. One creation named Percy, was a heartor boomerang shaped monster that likes candy, is scared of spiders, and likes to play video games.

Teddy created Bear-Bear, a red and blue creature who likes candy, is scared of rats, and whose favorite color is red. Paisley’s critter was named Rosie and likes to eat ice cream and candy, is scared of foxes, coyotes and bears, and likes to read books for fun.

Once drawn out on paper with their profile, Baxter’s students illustrated their monsters. The older students collected the papers during a visit to the Elementary building. The students were buddied up into pairs, and the projects were then in the hands of the FACS class. In all, around a dozen students in the FACS class helped breathe life into the drawings.

The FACS students measured out felt fabric, matching colors as best they could. Eyes and noses were made of buttons. Expressions were stitched on with thicker threads. Hair was made from trimmed felt.

“The hardest part was learning to leave room or measure out the seam margins,” says Piper Akin (Class of 2031). Akin was tasked with bringing ‘Percy’ to reality.

Miriam Cieslak-Laguer (Class of 2030) helped Soraya’s ‘Princess’ come to life. Mya Overslaugh (Class of 2031) crafted Ava’s ‘Laya,’ a monster who likes to eat mac and cheese with hot dogs and enjoys singing and dancing. Jacob Weykman (Class of 2031) assembled Arya’s creation.

Mrs. McConnon shared periodic updates, which amplified excitement, and she says, “Every time we had an update, a new picture, the kids would ask when ‘the big kids’ were coming back.”

Finally, facing inclement weather, the day arrived. McConnon’s class trekked across campus with small gift bags, a student’s name on each with their creation inside. In the Elementary building, the kindergarteners worked feverishly on a morning activity, coloring ‘thank you’ notes for their older pals while awaiting their arrival.

As the FACS students filed in, the room hushed. The younger students found their buddies. Elijah Payne (Class of 2031) was gifted a thank you note from his excited recipient of the ‘Letter F’ before even he saw the purple critter with big teeth.

As the exchange commenced, the younger kids squealed and shrieked with joy. Echoes about the room underscored their excitement. Comments proclaimed ‘it looks just like the drawing,’ along with various descriptions of the creatures being ‘fire.’ The FACS students beamed with pride.

Baxter’s classroom spends a lot of time collaborating with different grade levels. In addition to the crossover with the Family and Consumer Science students, Baxter’s class regularly welcomes Mrs. White’s fourth grade students to Eagle Time on ‘Fourth Grade Friend Fridays.’ The two classes plan matching Friday themes, and the Kindergarteners seek out interaction with the older students. Just before break, the fourth graders joined Baxter’s class for lunch and pajama day.

They watched The Grinch before wrapping up their day.

Baxter says, “You really can’t beat it. The kids look forward to it both ways - older to the younger, and the younger kids look up to the older kids. It’s a chance for the kids to connect across grade levels and an opportunity for the older kids to adopt that leadership and mentor role; they see themselves as leaders and role models, and they rise to that bar. It’s a winwin. And who doesn’t love a custom stuffy?”

It is expected this event will happen in the coming school years, potentially with more Kindergarten rooms joining in.

McConnon may need more helping hands.

Overslaugh says, “They were so happy. I didn’t know what to expect, but they were so happy,” and Weykman adds, “This was really cool.”

Finding Help This Year Now that we have our new Social Security benefit amount and see, after the Medicare Part B deduction, just how little it’s going to be, many of us are on the edge of panic -- or at least very worried. We barely made it through last year, month by month. What are we going to do this year when the prices are continuing to rise but our Social Security didn’t?

Last year the average Social Security benefit was $2,015, and this year it’s slated to be $2,071, up about $56 per month.

After deducting the $185 Part B last year, the average benefit was $1,830 per month. This year Part B has gone up to $202, making $1,869 the average benefit. Doing the math, it means that we have $39 more per month to spend.

And let’s not forget that the Part B deductible has also gone up, now at $283 per year before Medicare kicks in.

The National Council on Aging has created BenefitsCheckUp (BenefitsCheckUp.org), which is a one-stop shop for finding help programs. There are 2,000 of them in their database, and it’s free to use. You only need to enter your ZIP code and select the type of benefits you want to look at. Then you’ll answer a few questions and be presented with a list of options that includes contact information and tells you how to apply for the help.

Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism.
