DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE

The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourselfthantohiresomeoneelsetodoitforyou, butthat’snotnecessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantialamountofprofessionallycontractedprojects, buthomeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

FREE HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS

The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all.

While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.”

Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME

One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors.

Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

PAVING & SEALING

DID YOU KNOW?

Saint Patrick may have not been Irish, but millions of other people are. According to the travel resource WalletHub and the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data, 33.3 million people in the United States claim Irish ancestry. That’s around seven times greater than the entire population of Ireland. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in Boston in 1737, and New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is perhaps the largest and best-known parade for Saint Patrick. What’s more, Saint Patrick’s given name wasn’t Patrick. His “real” (Brythonic) name was Maewyn Succat, according to Irish legend. But Maewyn Succat Day just doesn’t have the same ring to it as St. Patrick’s Day.

IN THE ATTIC: THE SECRETS TO WINTER ROOF MAINTENANCE

Water leaks. As sure as we haven’t heard the last of NSA spying on Americans, it will soon storm. And when it does, shine a flashlight up in the attic in search of not just dripping water and condensation, but also water stains on the ceiling, walls and floor. All are signs that H20 is finding its way under your roof’s shingles or behind its flashings.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS

Animals and insects can cause damage, too. It’s not just poor weather that homeowners need to consider with regard to roof damage. Boring insects and animals may cause problems with roofs as well. A roof inspection may shed light on potential pest problems. Holes or nesting materials may indicate that an animal or animals are using the attic as a shelter from the elements.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

BREAKING DOWN THE LEPRECHAUN MYTH

While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red.

SOME WAYS TO USE BLUEBERRIES

• Salads Accents. Fresh blueberries add instant appeal to green salads and heartier grain salads.

• Blueberry French Toast Sandwich. A satisfying favorite on winter weekends.

• Peanut Butter & Blueberry. Add fresh blueberries to this classic sandwich. Almond and cashew butter also taste great with blueberries.

• Blueberry Salsa. Swap the traditional tomato for fresh blueberries, a surprisingly cool complement to hot peppers.

• Blueberry Coleslaw. Cabbage and blueberry combine two nutritional powerhouses into a savory side.

• Chocolate-Dipped Blueberries. Need we say more? Present them in a heart-shaped dish or shape for that someone special.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY

While New York and Boston host the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States, more than 100 parades are held in honor of St. Patrick throughout the country each year. For those who love a good parade but don’t have much time on their hands, the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, is home to the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade takes place on the city’s Bridge Street, which measures just 98 feet in length.

Ava Amorese Joins the 1,000-Point Club

Caledonia-Mumford High School senior Ava Amorese has solidified her place in school history, surpassing the coveted 1,000-point mark in Varsity Girls Basketball this February. A five-year varsity athlete in both basketball and soccer, Amorese’s milestone is the culmination of years ofdedicationandpassionforthesport.

“I would like to thank the teammates I’ve had through the years for making basketball one of the greatest experiences of my life,”
AVA AMORESE

Reflecting on her journey, Amorese recalls her earliest memories on the court:“Myfirstmemoriesinbasketball were playing biddy basketball and doing layup drills, and now I get to give back by being a coach in the same youth program!” Her love for the game has only grown over the years, fueled by teamwork and strategy. “I love playing with my team and being able to take all of our individual talents to make us better as a team,” she said. “ e strategy and game planning in basketball is also really fun because each game is completely different and unique from the next.”

Reaching 1,000 career points is a remarkable achievement, one that Amorese describes as “probably one of my biggest personal achievements.” She acknowledges the significance of the milestone, not just as an individual honor, but as a testament to the contributions of past and present teammates. “It’s really cool to have a personal achievement that shows all the work I’ve put into it,” she explained. “It is also nice to be able to look back at past seasons and remember all the past teams that have helped contribute to the accumulation of 1,000 points.”

Beyond her athletic success, Amorese excels academically, recently earning recognition as the fi h-ranked student in her graduating class. Her future aspirations are equally impressive, as she plans to double major in Neuroscience and Psychology in college.

Varsity girls’ basketball coach and Cal-Mum Athletic Director, Michael Reed, praised Amorese’s relentless work ethic and positive attitude, crediting her success to her unwavering

commitment. “Ava’s success is due directly to her hard work,” Reed stated. “She has a fantastic attitude and practices and plays hard all the time. She has great family support that has allowed her to be successful.”

As the Cal-Mum team sets its sights on a sectional title, Reed remains confident in both the team’s growth and Amorese’s bright future. “Our goal has always been to get better each game and in a larger context throughout the season,” he noted, adding, “We have always said that we should not be the same team at the end of the season that we were in the beginning of the season. I would say that has been true this season.”

Reed adds that “Ava has unlimited potential for her future. Her positive attitude, hard work, and family support will help her be successful regardless of what she chooses to do.”

Amorese expressed deep gratitude to those who have been part of her journey. “I would like to thank the teammates I’ve had through the years for making basketball one of the greatest experiences of my life,” she said. “You have made it such a memorable experience I will cherish forever.”

As she prepares for the next chapter, Amorese offers words of wisdom to aspiring athletes: “ e only thing that matters is that you believe in yourself and enjoy playing.” With her remarkable achievements both on and off the court, there’s no doubt that Ava Amorese’s legacy at Caledonia-Mumford will be remembered for years to come.

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

Downsizing Help

Sometimes we just don’t want to face the truth, so we ignore it as long as we can. But eventually it becomes clear: We need to downsize.

Just the word can be painful as we contemplate moving to a smaller place and likely needing to get rid of many of our belongings. And then there are all the details -- what to keep, how to pack, lifting those heavy boxes.

The good news is that we don’t have to do it alone. The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (www.nasmm.org) can steer you toward move managers in your area, people who are trained in all aspects of moving seniors. In the Find A Move Manager section of their website, put in your ZIP code to find people in your area.

In my town I found three companies. All advertise stress-free moves and help with organizing, downsizing and relocating. It seems they can do it all -- starting with the decluttering that will be necessary for any move to a smaller place. They organize which belongings go to which family members, arrange for the sale of valuables or donations to charity and even take care of trash disposal. And that’s just the first step in the process.

What I like best is that they’ll do the packing. Then on moving day, they’ll be there supervising the movers, dealing with the utility companies to get the power turned on in the new place and, surprise, they’ll even unpack on the other end and haul away the empty boxes. Moving to a smaller place might not be what we’d like to do, but when it becomes necessary, it’s good to know that we don’t have to do it alone. There are experts who know what to do and when. That should make the whole process much easier.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats rangefrom180to200caloriesper day. The larger a dog is, the more caloriesitneeds.

Are big dogs passe? Smaller, indoor dogs gain popularity

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why are so many people opting for small, yappy dogs these days instead of big dogs? That seems to be all I see when folks walk their dogs around here. A small dog won’t protect you or your home. -- Bobby T., Oak Ridge, Tennessee

DEAR BOBBY: While it may seem that most dog owners are choosing smaller breeds, the number of small vs. large dogs varies greatly depending on where you live. So you may observe that most of your immediate neighbors have small dogs -- but their popularity is not as universal as you think.

The American Kennel Club, for example, annually lists the most popular dogs by number of registrations per breed. In 2023, the most recent year of published data, the French bulldog was the most popular registered breed in the U.S. However, among the top 10 breeds, only four -- including the French bulldog, Dachshund, Beagle and Bulldog -- could be classified as “small.” The remaining six most popular dogs, including the Rottweiler, Golden Retriever and German Shorthaired Pointer, are all large breeds.

Not all U.S. households that own dogs have registered breeds, of course, The American Veterinary Medical Association in 2024 reported that just under half of U.S. households own dogs, while 32.1% are cat owners. So, while the French bulldog may be the most popular AKC-registered pet, that statistic doesn’t take into account all of the dogs that are being walked through their neighborhoods nationwide. Security-wise, having a dog of any size can be a deterrent for potential intruders (or attackers). Large breeds, often gentle giants, can deter people with bad intentions easily, but smaller breeds should not be underestimated. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

My heartfelt thanks to the kind gentleman who stopped the night of February 3 at the 5 Corners in Albion when he saw my car and I off the road and in trouble. He stayed with me until the wonderful first responders arrived. I’m Very Grateful!!

A glimmer of light

Many thanks to Tim

Several weeks ago, I fell on ice on our driveway while putting out the garbage. Several cars drove by while I lay on the ground. Then a lovely young man in a white truck stopped to check on me. He picked me up, checked that I could walk, and took the tote to the end of the driveway. He was my guardian angel! Thank you!

Thank you to the kind lady who works at my local Walmart in Geneseo for sharing your light. I was shopping for plant supplies and we got to chatting about our love for plants/nature and the upcoming brighter days of the seasons. She even shared with me a photo of a new Enchanted Weeping Willow plant (so cute and fuzzy!) she had found at another store, which brought back a lot of my childhood nostalgia of what my Mom and Grandmother had when I was a young girl. I got one of the last few remaining plants at the other store and it has already brought so much delight to my home and I will enjoy watching it bloom and grow. I ran into her again later in the week when I was picking up groceries and it was so uplifting to connect and let her know that I got that plant and to share that glimmer of light after a long and difficult winter season. Everything happens for a reason and it was so cool for all of that to come full circle. Thank you again and keep shining!

Potholes

The potholes are really bad this year! Seems they’re on every road I drive on through towns and the expressway. I hope these get taken care of. It’s dangerous when people swerve in and out of lanes trying to avoid them.

Have some consideration

Just a kind request for neighbors within the city limits that feel the need to feed EVERY single bird and animal to take into consideration what a mess it makes of your neighbors’ yards, their vehicles, sidewalks & fences when you invite so many birds and varmints to the neighborhood. You may think squirrels and groundhogs are cute but they have demolished my fences and made a mess of my gardens and garage. If you have that many leftover vegetables, please take them to a pantry!

Follow-Up Biopsies Help Confirm Healing for Celiac Disease

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been diagnosed with silent celiac disease at the late age of 62,but I’ve probably had it for decades.(It may have led to my serious osteoporosis.) A biopsy revealed totally flattened villi.

I am gluten-free and will be getting celiac-antibody, nutrient and other regular lab work from now on. But my doctors stated that no further scopes are needed unless my blood work reveals a problem, or I get symptoms while on a gluten-free diet. But for asymptomatic people like me, there are no symptoms, and blood work doesn’t show whether the small intestine has physically healed.I tried to ask my doctor this follow-up question but never received an answer.

Should I get a second opinion? I hear from other patients that their doctors did schedule a follow-up scope one to two years after their diagnosis to check their physical healing. For senior patients who can tolerate a scope and have had major villi destruction, is a follow-up scope prudent or unnecessary? -- W.C.S.

Q. A.

ANSWER: Peoplewithunexpectedosteoporosisshouldbeconsidered for celiac disease testing. Celiac disease is a condition of damage to the small intestine due to gliadin sensitivity.Gliadin is a protein that is found in gluten, wheat and other cereals, and it is thought to directly damage the lining of the intestine. This causes flattening of the villi, which is the absorptive surface of the small intestine. The only treatment for celiac disease is strict avoidance of gluten in the diet.

The inability to absorb nutrients can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea and weight loss, but symptoms can also be very subtle. Some people have mild abdominal discomfort after eating, but the symptoms usually disappear once they’re on a gluten-free diet.

People with celiac disease often have low calcium levels, the reasons for which are complex and involve parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, in addition to the direct malabsorption of calcium.I had one colleague with undiagnosed celiac disease who woke up after yet another colonoscopy, and she was unable to move her muscles due to low blood calcium levels. Since the major reservoir of calcium in the body is the bone, calcium is taken from the bone to preserve blood calcium levels, which can lead to severe osteoporosis over the years.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE

Skin: Every day burn victims benefit from donors who have chosen to donate their skin. Skin grafts treat people with serious burns by stopping infections and reducing scarring and pain. MTF Biologics also notes that donated skin tissue helps reconstruct the breasts of women following mastectomy procedures.

DETECTING ORAL CANCER

Blood tests can be highly suggestive of a celiac disease diagnosis, but small bowel biopsies remain the definitive way to diagnose celiac disease. Blood tests can turn out negative if a person is on a gluten-free diet, so the blood tests must be done while a person is consuming gluten.

Your question about getting another biopsy after being on a gluten-free diet is debated. However, the consensus of opinion as published by the American Gastroenterological Association is that people like you with severe celiac disease should get another biopsy within 12 months to confirm the original diagnosis and establish that your diet has allowed the intestine to heal.

In your case, carefully monitoring your vitamin D, parathyroid hormone and calcium levels, as well as keeping up with your bone density, will be important ways of confirming whether your treatment was successful. Unfortunately, bone is slow to change, and it will take years to be sure that your osteoporosis is improving through bone density tests.

You can read a lot more about celiac disease at celiac.org.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Oral cancer screenings are routinely performed as part of a dental checkup. During an exam, the dentist will look for abnormal red or white patches and sores. They will do a visual exam but may also use a cancer screening light or dye. If abnormal cells are detected, the dentist will do additional tests to learn more. Oral cancer screenings are particularly important for those who are at higher risk. These include people with a history of heavy alcohol use and those who use any type of tobacco product. Others at risk are people with HPV (human papillomavirus), people with a history of oral cancer, and those with a history of heavy sun exposure, due to increased risk of lip cancer.

BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is concerned about all aspects of your health. If oral cancer or any other medical condition comes to our

attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances.

P.S. Mouth sores are common and are usually noncancerous, but if one is detected, your dentist may recommend further testing through abiopsy.

Tad died at age 18 in 1871. Of Lincoln’s four boys, only the first child, Robert, lived to an advanced age; he passed away at age 82 in 1926.

AccordingtoGallup’s2021EconomyandPersonalFinancesurvey,theaverageindividual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs.By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS

Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in,it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.

A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

TO ENHANCE ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

“Molly Malone:”This song has been an anthem for the people of Dublin since the late 19th century. It talks about a Dublin fishmonger, and The Dubliners’ take is a popular version.
