“The students who make the most of their college experience aren’t necessarily the smartest ones. It’s often the average kids who know how to utilize the system, connect with the professors, take advantage of extracurricular activities, and manage their time well who reap the rewards,” Tyler says. “Been There, Should’ve Done That” can help students get all they can out of the next four years.
Noise-cancelling headphones: A set of durable headphones to block out ambient noise may be helpful for graduates going on to college or post-graduate work. Grads entering the workforce can enjoy silence or music as they commute to their offices. These headphones also work well on flights, making them ideal gifts for new grads whose first jobs require a lot of travel.

Backyards have become valuable spaces that enhance both home value and quality of life. Features like outdoor kitchens, TVs, and showers can increase a home’s market value by 3.1%,but the real benefits come from creating a peaceful retreat. To start, refresh the landscape by trimming overgrown trees and hedges to improve flow, and aim for a balance of sun and shade. Consider adding multiple gathering areas, such as an outdoor kitchen and a quiet reading nook, for versatility.
For added relaxation, include a water feature like a fountain or hot tub, which helps calm the mind. Ensure comfort with shaded areas—install pergolas, umbrellas, or plant shade trees to protect from the sun. With these quick tips, you can create a functional, peaceful backyard retreat that everyone will enjoy.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: IjustfoundoutthatIhaveakidney stone. I’m 77 years old, and I don’t want to deal with it. I’ve heard of potassium citrate and pulverizing it with sound waves. Are these options? -- J.M.
ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones. Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).
Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).
My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.
Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.
If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions

Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grillmasters everywhere are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside under the summer sun. But once you fire up that grill and cook your first hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill after you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to consume.

Avoid electrical work. Complicated electrical work is best left to the professionals. Estimates from the Electrical Safety Foundation International indicate that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year. Such malfunctions can occur for myriad reasons, and a lack of experience working with electrical circuits and breakers could make homes vulnerable to malfunctions and fires. It’s also worth noting that homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover damage caused by DIY electrical work. So at the very least homeowners should contact their insurance providers to determine if any accidents or injuries caused by DIY electrical work would be covered by their policies.
Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.
In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them. ~Aldo Leopold

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.
At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.
Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.
That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.
Here are a few things I accomplished:
I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch. A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours. This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.
I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.
That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted. If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful.

Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.
Fairport ursday evening concerts here! Yea!
Perinton Concert Band played wonderfully well for our first of the season. Thank you to a large group of fine musicians whom we appreciate. That’s the Brighter side.. but perhaps the few people who stand on the sidewalk adjacent to the concert goers who TALK most of the time might consider moving away from that part of the sidewalk or, stay, stop talking and find you will enjoy and appreciate music!

When you purchase takeout food, you are responsible for proper disposal. Why do you think it is okay to drop it in a parking area or someone’s yard? Why do you expect someone else to pick up after you? I’m tired of finding smelly packages of trash as well as cigarette butts and beer cans. Please take care of your own trash.
The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.
Andrew “Andy” R. Witzel
June 20, 2025
Lakeville: Andrew “Andy” R. Witzel, age 29, of Lakeville, NY, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Andy was born on August 26, 1995, in Rochester, NY. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Robert G. Staudinger, Kenneth R. Witzel, and Frances A. Witzel. Survived by his parents, Robert R. (Kathleen) Witzel, Julia A. Witzel (Chuck); his Grammy, Judy Staudinger; his girlfriend, Melissa Orellana; his sister, Alyssa Witzel and niece, Miracle, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.
Andy was the kind of guy who could make you laugh until your ribs hurt and then offer to smoke you a rack for dinner. A true country boy at heart, he found joy in the simple things: the peace of a quiet morning in the woods, the tug of a bass on the line, or the thrill of turkey season. And if no deer showed up? No problem. He’d keep his hunting skills sharp by taking aim at squirrels in the backyard, always finding a way to enjoy the outdoors no matter the setting. He had a sharp wit, a goofy charm, and a gi for quoting the perfect movie line at just the right moment, usually followed by a mischievous grin and a laugh.
A diehard Buffalo Bills fan through thick and thin, Andy cheered like every game was the Super Bowl – “Go Bills!” He loved long rides on his motorcycle, especially around the lake, where the wind in his face matched the freedom he felt in his soul. Whether he was listening to music that ranged from classic rock to country, fishing at Grass Lake with his dad, or Conesus Lake with a friend, or loving on the many pets that always seemed to find a home with him, Andy’s big heart and sense of humor le a lasting mark. He was caring, kind, and unapologetically himself, and the world was a lot more fun with him in it.
No formal funeral services will take place. A celebration of life gathering will be announced and take place at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made in Andy’s name to: Buddy Love Dog Rescue, 35 Bowen Road, Churchville, NY 14428.

Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.

“There is a primal connection when we step aboard a vintage plane. We feel the presence of the soldiers, and for just a moment, connect to their world.”
RUTH HENRY
Resting at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo is the “Saigon Lady,” a towering C-130A Hercules restored with care and reverence. But her aluminum skin holds more than rivets and paint; she carries the incredible story of one man’s flight to freedom in the final hours of the Vietnam War. at man is Khiem Quang Pham.
Pham was a lieutenant in the South Vietnamese Air Force in April 1975, as Saigon teetered on the edge of collapse. Despite a peace treaty signed two years earlier, communist forces from the North were sweeping through the South with alarming speed. e capital city was descending into chaos –looting, panic, and last-ditch evacuations. For Pham, the war had become personal. With his country crumbling and his family in danger, he made a fateful decision.
As Ngoc Huynh reported in 2020, “In April of 1975, with the Vietnam War raging to a bloody end, South Vietnamese Air Force Lt. Khiem Quang Pham had one chance – one – to save his family and himself.” at chance came in the form of a C-130 cargo plane – designed to carry 92 people, but on that escape mission, it held around 350 refugees including 52 members of Pham’s family.
According to the National Warplane Museum, Pham and his friend, Major Canh Huu Nguyen, executed a bold plan: ey unloaded 20,000 pounds of rice from the aircra at Long anh Airport, picked up Pham’s family, and told the surprised crew they weren’t going back. Tensions flared as an armed standoff briefly unfolded on the runway. Yet Pham believed the soldiers wouldn’t dare fire on a plane full of civilians – and he was right. He pushed the throttles forward and roared down the runway, li ing off just in time.
To avoid radar detection, Pham skimmed the treetops before climbing over the South China Sea. An hour later, at 16,000 feet and over international waters, he announced their freedom. “Cheers erupted throughout the plane,” Pham reflects. FROM
Landing in Singapore, the family faced uncertainty. ey were out of fuel, had no cash, and were detained at the airport. But a miraculous turn of events – fueled by compassion from an American pastor named Richard Pendell – changed their fate. Pendell sent $30,000 to ensure they were not deported back to Vietnam, and the family was eventually sent first-class to Guam and on to the United States to begin anew.
Pham’s own journey in America was humble. He worked cleaning toilets and fueling planes before rising to become a flight instructor and eventually a commercial airline pilot. A er accumulating 18,000 hours of flight time, he retired from US Airways in 2006. He now lives in Ohio with three children and nine grandchildren.
e “Saigon Lady,” meanwhile, had a life of her own. Built in 1957 and flown in Vietnam under serial #570460, she served both the South Vietnamese and later the U.S. Air Force before retiring to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. In 2019, the National Warplane Museum acquired her and began a $250,000 restoration effort. Volunteers – many of them Vietnam and C-130 veterans – painstakingly reassembled and repainted her, returning her to the appearance she bore on April 2, 1975.
Austin Hancock, a NWM flight instructor and aviation enthusiast who shared Pham’s story in Vintage Aviation News describes the rescue flight as “a goodwill mission” that lives on through the aircra itself. e restoration was led by NWM volunteers Jay Jones, Ray Ingram, and

Don Wilson, who worked tirelessly to preserve every detail. “She will soon appear just as she did on April 2, 1975, when Lt. Pham played a role in saving countless lives.”
Pham, who has reunited with the aircra multiple times over the decades, calls the plane “an old friend.” One such reunion occurred on April 3, 2020, at the museum in Geneseo, where he met Don Wilson of the museum’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial committee.
Today, the “Saigon Lady” is more than a plane – she is a centerpiece of the museum’s growing Vietnam War monument, and a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. e National Warplane Museum, dedicated to honoring veterans and preserving aviation history, invites visitors to step aboard and connect with the powerful human stories behind the hardware.
As volunteer Ruth Henry puts it, “ ere is a primal connection when we step aboard a vintage plane. We feel the presence of the soldiers, and for just a moment, connect to their world.” Perhaps through more visits like this and outreach in the community, people today will learn to appreciate the human experience that was the Vietnam War.

What is heat stroke? Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside.
He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York
DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.
Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.
The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.

Saturday mornings in Perry aren’t just for produce, local pet lovers often bring their leashed dogs to the farmers’ market. It’s a great chance to socialize your pup, enjoy the fresh air, and pick up a treat or two from local vendors (many of whom bring biscuits just for pets!).

It’s a long story that some day I’d like to write a book about. But for today I’d just like to say he’s my cuddle bug and we just adore him.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, andretirementagecanarrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
