SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Avoid idling. Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetors could not get the appropriate mix of air and fuel in the engine. But carburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy note that modern engines will warm up by being driven and urge drivers to avoid warming up their cars for more than 30 seconds.

Last year the average Social Security benefit was $2,015, and this year it’s slated to be $2,071, up about $56 per month.

After deducting the $185 Part B last year, the average benefit was $1,830 per month. This year Part B has gone up to $202, making $1,869 the average benefit. Doing the math, it means that we have $39 more per month to spend.

Many Thanks to the Stranger Driving By Thank you, Mike, for picking me up from my fall into the street on Klem Road. You stayed with me and walked me into my house until I was able to contact my son. You even got an ice pack out of my freezer to put on my bleeding head. Not many people would sacrifice their time to do that for a stranger. May you enjoy the holidays and God bless you! I will never forget your kindness.

If I could just apologize If I could just apologize to the very nice older couple that visited “our” bargain basement store on Monday, December 8th from Brighton. They were obviously seniors getting along together well. That’s so nice to see!

A coworker and I found the square new rug which they’d been looking for. They wanted blue colored, not white. Unfortunately, when I suggested buying slippers so the rug would stay clean, I remembered a slip and fall I’d had and ran out to the front door and overreacted. Please, customers, come back to our store, I apologize from the heart, it was “a senior moment!”

The city speed limit is 30. Why post that when so many ignore the speed limit? Some do 40-50, zigzagging, no turn signals, no stopping at stop signs, cutting others off when it’s “right on red when clear,” etc., etc. Will the police please monitor, hopefully every day, the main road? Visibility is a deterrent to at least slow them down.

Drivers & pets To add to your vent, as a retired flag person, I saw this many times. My added advice is, if you ever get in an accident, and your air bags go off, how will your pet fare?

Or, if a small breed, it could be killed. Think about it.

Actions give neighborhood trashy look People, please reconsider parking or storing cars on the front lawn. The practice has grown from one house to multiple houses. One car has no plates; one is wrapped in tarp. The rest get driven daily then back on the lawn. One house has now added a second car, giving their place that car-lot look.

To wedge it in they blast over the curb and sidewalk to get that second car to fit. Over time, muddy ruts have formed and walkers have to go to the road or get mud all over their shoes.

People still care about the appearance of their homes and neighborhood. This parking practice kills the grass, looks very junky, and the weight of a car or two sitting on underground service lines could possibly damage them. Apparently, it is against village code but code enforcement says they don’t have time to deal with this and suggest calling the police.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two laid-back cats, my boyfriend has a big sweet dog named “Gabriel,” and we are moving in together in a few weeks. Gabe is very well socialized and he spent his puppyhood in a big house with cats, so I’m not worried about him adapting to a new situation. But I’m not sure how my cats will react. How can I make sure life will be low-stress together? -- Chase T. in Atlanta

Roscoe is a little over two years old and his sister Ruby is a year and a half old.

DEAR CHASE: You have a great advantage in that your boyfriend’s dog is already used to living with cats.

Before your move-in date, gradually get the cats familiar with Gabriel by bringing him over for a few hours, several days per week if possible. Before his arrival, create a safe space for the cats where they can retreat, because when a big, goofy dog lumbers in the door, they will most likely run for cover.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES Err on the side of caution at the start and take the pup outside once every 30 to 60 minutes to establish a system of reward and praise for going outside.

Once Gabe is settled and calm, have him lie down, with your boyfriend keeping hold of his leash. Bring each cat out, one by one, in your arms, and calmly approach him. When the cat tenses up, hisses or tries to escape, stop and take a few steps back. Stay far enough back that your cat remains calm in your arms but can see the dog. After a few minutes, take your cat back to their safe space and repeat with the other cat.

Repeat this process on each visit to minimize stress and trauma for the cats and the dog. Continue after you move in together. It may take weeks or months for them to be comfortable with each other, but a calm, consistent approach will help.

Rochester Fencing Club Trains Champions B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

Nestled in a back building off Brighton-Henrietta Townline Road, the Rochester Fencing Club trains people of all ages. The club is owned and run by Felicia Zimmermann, who trained at the Club on her way to two Olympic Games. Her students gain confidence and athletic ability and go on to compete in world championships and on fencing teams at Ivy League schools.

Zimmerman began fencing at the Rochester Fencing Club at age eight, spurred by her father’s idea that it would help with her childhood shyness. Zimmermann had already tried gymnastics, diving, and tennis, but no sport had clicked for her. Of her first time fencing, Zimmermann says, “I fought him tooth and nail and did not want to go, but I went, I put on the gear, and I just took to it like a fish to water, even at 8.”

Reflecting on it now, Zimmerman thinks the face covering all fencers wear helped her feel more comfortable in the sport. “I felt protected. I could be myself. And it was like it unleashed the Kraken.”

Part of what captivates Zimmermann about fencing is that it is as much a mental game as a physical one, like physical chess.

She says, “It’s not just extremely athletic, but you have to think.

You have to figure out the puzzle and put the puzzle together.”

Because every player has their own unique approach, every fencing bout is different. Zimmermann says her favorite thing about fencing is that “It doesn’t matter what day or time it is, if you fence the same person two times in a row, it’s going to be different… every time you come to the fencing club, it’s like a different puzzle you have to figure out.”

Modern fencing consists of bouts in which players score points by touching the opponent with their weapon. The three weapons – foil, epee, and saber – each derive from traditional swordsmanship practices and have different rules for where on the body points can be scored. Foil, Zimmerman’s specialty, only allows touches in the torso with the tip of the weapon, while epee allows hits to limbs. Saber, a descendant of cavalry weapons rather than dueling ones, allows hits anywhere with either the tip or the side of the blade. In today’s fencing competitions, both suits and weapons are equipped with electronics to accurately record the point values for each hit.

Since her first experience fencing as a child, Zimmermann has been dedicated to the sport, winning collegiate, national, and international titles, becoming the first woman to win NCAA titles in two different events (foil and epee), and being the U.S. foil champion four times between 1993 and 2000. She was part of the 1996 Olympic fencing team at the Atlanta games and represented the US again at the 2000 Sydney Olympics alongside sister, Iris, where the team placed fourth. In 2008, the sisters bought the Club from its founder, celebrated fencing coach Buckie Leach. Leach coached the U.S. women’s Olympic fencing team five times and coached several fencers to groundbreaking individual wins. Besides the Zimmermann sisters, Leach’s students included Lee Kiefer, who became the first American to win an individual gold medal in foil at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

When the Zimmermann sisters bought the Rochester Fencing Club, it was located on Culver Road. In 2018, they moved it to the current location, bringing the sport they love to the area where they grew up. The current facility is the biggest the Club has had since opening more than 40 years ago, with competition-standard lanes and space for club operations and student preparation and rest.

Today, national and international competitors come here to train, just as Zimmermann did as a child. One of RFC’s students took silver in junior women’s foil at this year’s Cadet and Junior World Cup in Peru, and another recently competed at an international event in Hungary.

Zimmermann says fencing is a sport for those who haven’t quite found their place elsewhere in athletics, saying, “It’s one of those sports – and Rochester Fencing Club itself is one of the places – that embraces all kinds of people that walk through the door. We provide a really safe and growing, thriving community for people who just don’t seem to fit in one of the traditional sports.”

After so many years as part of Rochester Fencing Club, both as student and owner, Zimmermann has a large community of students, past and present, who have gone on to fence elsewhere.

Many fencers go on to compete with prestigious collegiate teams, including the Air Force Academy, University of North Carolina, and Ivy League schools. One fencer was just accepted to Princeton University with a place on their fencing team.

Seeing how fencing impacts her students’ lives even years later is a big part of why Zimmermann has stayed so involved with the Club. She says it’s heartwarming to see prior students come back and tell her fencing made a big difference in their life. “If I can impact a child or person in a positive way, so they can have something in their life to always look back on … I’m really happy fencing can give that to them.”

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

ANSWER: The concept of using the immune system to treat cancer is old, but the ability to do so has dramatically improved in the past few years. There are a few specific types of treatments that I’d like to highlight:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are treatments that release inhibitions on the immune system. (These “strengthen” the immune system, which has beneficial but also potentially toxic effects.) For melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these treatments have revolutionized treatment and led to dramatically improved outcomes in people whose melanoma has spread. Response rates are up to 60% in a disease where the prognosis used to be dismal.

The unleashed immune system can destroy cancer very effectively, but it also can attack healthy organs, with many people (between 10% to 60% depending on drugs and doses) developing damage to the skin, lungs, liver, thyroid, colon and heart. These toxicities range from mild to life-threatening.

The body’s own immune cells can be genetically engineered to kill cancer cells. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) can be specifically changed to recognize cancer cells. This can lead to complete remission with some cancers, especially some leukemias and lymphomas. Unfortunately, they can also attack the body, leading to neurological damage that can be very serious.

Developing cancer vaccines is a highly promising strategy for personalizing the immune system to attack a person’s own cancer.

Although the United States has recently made dramatic cuts to its support of this research, researchers in other countries continue to study this. It can be used in combination with other traditional or immune-based treatments.
