Know security rules. Check with the airline for confirmation, but the TSA generally allows formula, breast milk, and juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in carry-on baggage. It does not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Remove these items from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.

FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD

Hunger: affects certain individuals’ moods during winter, when hours of sunlight are fewer than during spring, summer and fall and when temperatures outside can sometimes be so cold as to keep people indoors for extended periods of time. In addition, a 2013 study published in the journal Social Indicators Research found that individuals report greater life satisfaction on exceptionally sunny days than they did on days with ordinary weather.

The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING

Many homeowners love wood fencing because of its versatility with regard to design and color. The options are endless when it comes to crafting wood fencing, which also can be stained in any color homeowners prefer. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE

(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.

Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.

Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.

Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.

For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.

“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”

It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.

“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”

To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

pet place

My name is Simba. I am 5 years old and a girl from Florida! My mom and dad adopted me when they lived in New Hampshire, and I love my forever home here in NY. I live with my mom, dad, human brother and sister on the way. I love snuggles and playing ball with my brother!

Respecting your neighbors

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you settle a dispute between me and my neighbor? Bob doesn’t want my dog peeing or pooping on his lawn. I told him that my dog is just helping fertilize his grass, and he should be grateful for the free nutrients. Yesterday, as I was hanging out on my back patio, Bob threw a bag full of old dog poop over the fence; it broke when it landed and scattered all over the patio. I just don’t get it. We used to be friends, but now I’m not so sure. Who’s right in this situation? -- Doug H., via email

DEAR DOUG: Please tell me this is a prank letter, because otherwise I’m going to tear my hair out. One of the biggest commandments of dog ownership is Thou Shalt Not Annoy Thy Neighbors.

Allowing your dog to relieve himself on your neighbor’s lawn is more than just annoying; it opens you to a potential lawsuit. Clearly, it’s causing strife for your neighbor. Even if dog poop actually did fertilize lawns (it doesn’t), you and your dog are trespassing on private property. You’re also destroying your neighbor’s lawn. Dog pee burns grass and kills it, leaving awful bare spots surrounded by yellow, dying grass. Dog poop doesn’t disappear; it sits there and stinks, blocks airflow to the grass and kills it.

If you want to resolve this situation peacefully, go apologize to your neighbor, offer to clean up your dog’s mess and keep your dog away from his property. That means leashing your dog on walks, picking up his poop as soon as he goes and disposing of it at home or in a municipal waste bin. That’s your option. There is only one. TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

Senior discounts are even more important now

The price increases we might see because of the expected tariffs make this a good time to get used to hunting for senior discounts on all the goods and services we need and want.

As usual, the definition of “senior” varies from store to store and restaurant to restaurant. One might stick to the age 65, when we used to start collecting Social Security, and others might look at age 50, when AARP starts identifying us as potential subscribers -- or anywhere in between.

Despite the occasional confusion about age, there are discounts to be had.

Shop your local stores first. They’re more likely to offer senior discounts because they want your business, and your repeat business.

Check Goodwill and The Salvation Army stores for discount days. Ask your local grocery stores about senior discount days. You might need a loyalty card, but even those can often get you rewards cash.

Don’t forget pharmacies, eyeglass stores, gyms, clothing stores, travel agencies, movie theaters, insurance agents, auto repair locations -- anywhere you spend money. They’re not likely to offer you any discount unless you ask for it. But they do want your business, and it’s to their benefit to give you a discount.

Scroll through the discount area of the AARP website and see if a membership makes sense for you. (I get $20 off an annual Walmart+ plan, which pays for my AARP membership.)

Search for discounts online by looking for “senior discounts 2025” and your area. Then call in advance to verify that a certain discount is available.

Don’t be shy about asking. In fact, before you go to any restaurant or store, make it a rule to call and inquire, and to verify the age they consider senior. After all, it’s your money, and every dollar discounted is a dollar you get to keep.komando.com to sign up. You can also catch her on the radio or her podcast.

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Small Town Neighbors

The great part about living in a small town is everybody knows everyone, sees everything, and anything out of the ordinary gets plenty of folks on it right away. Thank you to the neighbors who knew our critters were out before we did, tracked us down, tracked them down, and helped get them home. You’re all good sports and GREAT neighbors.

Act of Kindness

I went to good will with my staff and my friend in Victor. I found a really nice big Vera Bradley bag. When I went to pay for it the lady in front of me had paid for it. That was very nice of her. It made my day! I think we need more people like her in the world!

Why do some people think it’s OK to mow grass onto the road? Not only is it dangerous for bicyclest and motor cycles. There are stones that you may also hit people and cars with. Also mowing all your grass on to others property after they have respectfully mowed grass on to their own side.

Street Bikes

I get the weather is getting nice and the street bikes are starting to come out and you want to go fast, because well, that’s what they are designed to do... but if you are going to speed.. at least do it on the highways where the speed limit is 65, not on small side roads where the speed limit is 40 and people are walking their dogs, riding their bikes and taking their children for walks up the quiet road. No reason to be doing 80+ on these roads. And yes, when it does happen, the cops are called and a description is given. Just use some common sense and curiosity.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

DEAR DR.ROACH: I am a 76-year-old male in good health. I go to the gym three days a week, eat well, and fast one day a week. I have been reading about taking a tablespoon of olive oil at night as a remedy for all kinds of things such as digestion issues and arthritis. I tried it, and I swear that the first day after ingesting it, I felt less pain in the arthritis in my hands and feet.

Is there any evidence that this practice is helpful? Also, does it matter what kind or brand of olive oil one uses? I bought special olive oil that is polyphenol-rich; it is lighter and more tasty than the extra-virgin oil I normally buy at the food market. What’s your take on this? -- L.A.

Q. A.

ANSWER: Although I don’t think olive oil is a cure for all ailments, there are certainly health benefits when using olive oil compared to most oils. The flavor and amount of polyphenol (an anti-inflammatory compound found in olive oil) will vary from one brand to another. These anti-inflammatory compounds can help symptoms of arthritis in some people.

Personally, I recommend extra-virgin olive oil (made from the initial squeezing of olives without chemical and heat treatment), which has the highest amount of the nutrients you want. But my advice is to choose based on the flavor you like and how much you want to spend rather than the polyphenol content. And of course, too much of anything, including olive oil, isn’t good for you, but a tablespoon is fine.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I came down with a headache, but nothing showed up after a year of tests, including a CT scan, MRIs, and a spinal tap. Then I was told that I had a nummular headache, which I understand is rare. I have a sore spot in the back of my head and a feeling in my head that I just can’t explain. I don’t know how I made it through a year until I got on meds.

I am now taking 25 mg of lamotrigine a day. I’m at the point where I’ll have a couple good days, then it comes back. Can this be cured? Is the medication that I’m taking OK, or is there something better? -- K.S.

Q. A.

ANSWER: A nummular headache (the name comes from the Latin word for coin as the sore spot is often the size and shape of a coin) is very uncommon, and I’ve never treated a case. I would defer treatment to a neurologist with expertise in headaches. Gabapentin is a common treatment, but lamotrigine is also used. The best treatment is the one that works best for you.Although sometimes the condition will simply go away, it often doesn’t, requiring chronic medication to keep symptoms under control.

I will note that you are on a tiny dose of lamotrigine. It needs to be started at a small dose, but when used for seizures, the usual dose is 400-600 mg per day (which takes several weeks to reach, titrating slowly). If it’s working for you but not well enough, you might do better with a higher dose.

If a higher dose doesn’t work, there are other medications to try such as antidepressants like amitriptyline and other seizure medications like carbamazepine. One other option to ask your neurologist about is botulinum toxin (Botox), which relieves pain by more than half in about two-thirds of patients.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Free Prom Giveaway at the Victor Community Clothes Closet Offers An ‘Enchanted Evening’

On a recent Saturday morning, the Community Clothes Closet in Victor gleamed with sparkling shoes and purses, costume jewelry draped elegantly upon a table, makeup options adorned a piano, and dresses in all different colors, sizes, and styles hung in rows, waiting to be worn to prom. A local ColorStreet nail stylist demonstrated how to put on colorful nails at a nearby table, and patrons chose perfect color matches for their special night.

During the four-hour Enchanted Evening Event, anyone attending a ball or prom could shop for free. Once the teens located the ideal dress match, they could stand in front of an arch of pearly pink and silver balloons and ring a large handbell, signifying a successful find of the perfect gown.

While upstairs volunteers dressed in black and wearing pearls escorted teenagers shopping for women’s wear, male volunteers downstairs escorted menswear shoppers to choose their tuxedo, shirt, jacket, and pants.

“Prom is expensive,” said Karen Hansen, director and founder of the Community Clothes Closet, an outreach of the United Methodist Church on East Main Street. Between the tickets, formal wear, and transportation, not everyone can afford prom. Hansen added, “ e number one thing we hear from parents is that [us] having the event has allowed [their teen] to go to prom.”

It all started three years ago when the Community Clothes Closet received a donation of 13 formal dresses. Even though it’s a thriving resource that receives ample donations from the community, in the four years it had been open, they’d never received one ball gown.

Wondering what to do with them, Hansen said they decided to make an event out of it. at’s how the Enchanted Evening event was born. ey asked for more dress donations, and the community responded.

Now in its seventh year, the Clothes Closet recently hosted its third annual free prom/ball giveaway. “Last year we gave 200 dresses away with purses and shoes and 80 tuxes,” Hansen said. So far, they’ve given away about 100 dresses from this last event, but they won’t know their full number until closer to prom.

Even though the event is over, many prom dresses, tuxes, and accessories are still available for teens needing formal wear. e clothing outreach has about 400 dresses le , many of them brand new and shipped from a warehouse in New York City that donates dresses to the cause. Other donors buy them on clearance at the end of the season, and some people bring in dresses that were never worn or are gently used. Fairy Godmothers of Rochester also donates dresses to the closet.

Since the March event, Community Clothes Closet volunteers have given formal wear away several times a week. “We let anyone from anywhere come in and take what they need,” Hansen said. And that doesn’t just include prom dresses and tuxes – that goes for the entire Clothes Closet. Open four days a week, the clothes pantry has grown over the seven years since its opening. ey’ve cleaned out old storage rooms and expanded into it, giving space for separate women’s, men’s, young adult, and children’s sections. ere’s even a room full of accessories, linens, and more.

e closet is open to anyone, no questions asked. Patrons can come in every two weeks and carry out three garbage bags of goods at every visit. Many donations come through the clothing donation bin outside. Patti Larche, closet manager, said, “We probably empty that bin about four times a week – and it’s full.”

In March, the closet hosted 634 patrons and gave away 150 coats, 52 blankets, and 554 bags of clothes. Hansen noted that around 60 volunteers, some only working once a month, logged 496 volunteer hours. Volunteers currently range from age 16 to 90, including area teens, with some volunteering regularly throughout high school.

“Last year we gave 200 dresses away with purses and shoes and 80 tuxes.”

e formalwear will be available until the end of May for any prom-goers in need of the perfect dress or suit. Next year, Hansen said they’re considering expanding the event to two days so more people who want to attend can get the full “Enchanted Evening” experience.

But it couldn’t happen without local support, Hansen noted, thanking the incredible community.
