(NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made.

Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed.

These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm.

So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years.

Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression.

VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects.

Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration.

A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal.

Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death.

No Screening Tests for Bile Duct Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms.

Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon.

ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and lightcolored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms.

Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma.

Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim.

She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable.

Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).

For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

She continues to consume diet soda, which concerns me because I have heard of possible adverse effects of artificial sweeteners.

How would you advise her? I hesitate to say anything, since she might be getting more unsolicited advice than she wants already.

-- M.K. ANSWER: I think that artificial sweeteners are unlikely to have had any role in causing her cancer in the first place, nor in her treatment or risk of recurrence. It’s more important for her to stay hydrated during chemotherapy, and she should have what is easiest for her -- and if that’s diet soda, that’s fine. St. Agnes School to Celebrate Catholic Schools Week

n January 27th through January 31st, Catholic schools coastto-coast will celebrate National Catholic Schools Week, and St. Agnes School of Avon is no exception. For weeks, if not longer, the students at St. Agnes have been looking forward to the many activities the week will bring, including a special mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. It is also a time of gratitude for this unique educational experience.

Catholic Schools Week will kick off on Monday with a 12:30pm prayer service at St. Agnes Church. On Tuesday, students will sport their pajamas and bring along a stuffed animal friend. They will also participate in reading with “Bigs and Littles,” something the St. Agnes School Principal, Elizabeth Jensen, says they especially enjoy.

“The kids love Tuesday,” she shared. “We pair 3rd-6th graders with the younger Pre-K-2nd graders throughout the entire school year. The older students [Bigs] read and work with the younger students [Littles]. Sometimes during this event, they pretend to be camping out as they read together. It is so special. My 6th graders have already started asking when that day is coming!”

On Wednesday, students will head to Sacred Heart Cathedral along with the 18 other Catholic schools in the Rochester diocese.

All students will be dressed in perfect uniform, and St. Agnes School will be honored to have two of its students altar serving with one student holding the Bishop’s miter (hat) and the other his Crosier (staff ) potentially.

“The Bishop’s mass is especially exciting for us this year,” said Jensen. “We will also have one of our 6th grade students doing her first reading; she is already practicing!” Jensen added that while the Bishop always gives “such a great homily,” the students participation in the mass makes it “extra special.”

Thursday will find students dressing down in red and navy to show their school pride, roller-skating in the gym and hosting a potluck dinner and talent show that evening. Finally, on Friday, students will enjoy a family fun day, either skiing and snowboarding at Swain or bowling at Livingston Lanes in Geneseo. “The community is so supportive of us,” said Jensen.

“During National Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate how lucky we are to have this opportunity thanks to the sacrifices of many, including parents, donors and teachers,” added Jensen, herself a former Catholic school student. “As the heart and soul of Avon, we view ourselves as an extension of a child’s family, continuing to teach the values our students are learning at home.”

Continuing a 144-year tradition of excellence, academics at St. Agnes remain strong, with 85% of St. Agnes students proficient in English Language Arts, and 85% of St. Agnes students proficient in math compared to New York State averages of 46% in English

Language Arts and 50% in math. One success factor is the school’s focus on teaching the whole child: spiritually, emotionally, socially and academically.

“State tests are just one measure of our students’ success,” explained Jensen. “Faith, how to be a good person, and interpersonal skills are taught along with academics so that students can be the best versions of themselves,” noting that students do not have to be Catholic to attend.

“We also encourage parents to partner with us, volunteer, attend events and use their expertise to make our school even better than it is.”

Still, Jensen reiterated, St. Agnes School is not lacking in academic resources, expertise and best practice. “We are more than Common Core,” stated Jensen. “We follow state standards, and we use the expertise of our highly-qualified, state certified teachers. We also offer academic intervention, tutoring, one-on-one instruction and follow research-based best practices.”

While Jensen recognizes Catholic school may not be the option for everyone, she would like those families interested in a Catholic school education to know that St. Agnes is able to offer a good amount of financial aid. “We offer scholarship opportunities through the St. Agnes School Foundation,” she said. “We will work with anyone who would like to come. We do not believe finances should stop anyone from attending who would like to attend, and I hope people will take advantage of the opportunities we provide.”

St. Agnes School also offers three-year-old Pre-school two days a week and four-year-old Pre-school three half days up to five full days a week. Affordable, afterschool care for Kindergarten through sixth grade students is offered, as well. “It is a special place,” said Jensen fondly. “We have fun, and we learn a lot, creating bonds that last forever.”

Many thanks to Northside Salvage Co. in East Rochester! You delivered as promised, for which I am much grateful. Sorry this “shout out” recognizing your reliable business took so long to submit, but here it finally is. We came to you looking for a real spare tire, not a ‘donut’.

For a Christmas present last year, we received a gift card from a popular restaurant/bar in [local town]. Shortly thereafter, they closed for renovations.

We anxiously awaited their reopening. Finally, we were able to stop for lunch. The new owner refused to accept our gift card. We were not aware it was under new management. We do know Sherry would have done anything to retain us as a customer. Sadly, we will not darken the doorway of this establishment again. Hope the new owner brings all new clientele; he will need them if he is to remain in business.

Why would you steal it?

When you mount it, tell your friends that’s the one you stole from the grocery store parking lot. The tag was on the antlers. If you would like to return it, I’d appreciate it, but I doubt you will.

The bride spends all the holidays with her family and forgets his! This is very selfish and crosses the line to just plain mean when your husbands have only one surviving parent. What do you suppose that parent does for the day? Seriously, are the people who raised the man you love so awful? I won’t even go into how sad it is when grandchildren are involved. Take a minute to take stock of your holidays.

Are you respectful and inclusive of your husband’s families, or are you guilty of this behavior? Once you’re finished with all the excuses as to why you don’t go there, take time to put on your big girl pants and go act like a considerate adult.

You can set a good example for the kids. At least give your husband time to take the kids for a visit.

Our Forefathers who drafted and signed the United States Constitution were geniuses! The U.S. Constitution is the perfect model for a Republic Democracy, “...govt. of the people, by the people, and for the people.” To do away with what the U.S. Constitution states would be to undermine the human intelligence and drive to make and keep America the best country to live in in the

world! It is okay to disagree with others, but when it’s carried so far that it hurts others you disagree with, then it isn’t okay. You cannot make everyone happy, as humans are all different, and not one individual human is the same as another. This is a good thing!

Thanks to the Red Cross for installing two new smoke detectors in my home. I’m sleeping much better at night.

Enough is Enough about wheelchair rights! Please get off it. With all the horrific things happening in the world, move on about being an adult in a wheelchair and being treated like one. Be happy if someone is considerate and takes the time to try to help or assist someone they may think needs assistance. This could be anyone, and not necessarily someone in a wheelchair. If you don’t want the help, then tell them so.

It simply takes a commitment to making small, sustainable changes that add up to impactful, healthy habits. Dr. Samara Sterling with The Peanut Institute says it’s best to begin by concentrating on the good habits you already follow.

“Set yourself up for success by building on the healthy things you like to do,” says Sterling. “For example, if you typically eat one serving of fruit a day, figure out a way to increase that to two servings.”

Over time, as you amp up your healthy habits, the detrimental ones tend to fade away more easily.

As part of a good health reset, Dr. Sterling recommends incorporating more protein, especially plant-based proteins, into a daily diet.

“Proteins and healthy fats make you feel fuller for longer and can help eliminate the urge to snack and consume empty calories,” explains Sterling.

Peanuts are an example of a powerful plant protein. Just one serving of peanuts delivers seven grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals and heart-healthy fats.

“Peanuts are categorized as a superfood because they’re nutrientdense and deliver superior health benefits in a very small serving,” says Dr. Sterling. “If you combine superfoods, like kale and peanuts or quinoa and peanuts, you’re really maximizing your nutritional intake.”

There’s more good news because peanut butter also packs protein.

“Research has shown that the consumption of small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” says Sterling. “It’s easy to incorporate peanuts and peanut butter into breakfast, lunch or dinner.”

Mediterranean Grain Medley with Peanuts 3 Tbsp. peanut oil 2 garlic cloves, minced ½ tsp. hot pepper flakes ½ red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow squash, diced 8 oz. snap peas 2 cups beluga lentils or brown lentils, pre-cooked 1 cup jasmine rice, pre-cooked 2-inch piece of ginger, grated 1 cup peanuts, plain, roasted 1 bunch green onions, chopped Salt to taste, Lime juice to taste, Cilantro as garnish Heat a sauté pan and add peanut oil. Add garlic and pepper flakes, cook for 30 seconds. Add bell pepper and squash, sauté for 3–4 minutes.

Add snap peas, cook for an additional minute. Add lentils, rice, ginger, lime juice and salt. Mix well. Heat the grains for 1 minute then toss in the peanuts and green onions. Serve warm and enjoy!
