This event witnessed over 1,000 applicants who were all eager about receiving the opportunity to gain professional growth. This event was aimed at hiring key personnel to support the
Gas to Energy Project.
Directed by our Human Resource Manager, Mrs. Lilowtie Chintamani, our Human Resource team conducted on the spot interviews and successfully hired several outstanding applicants to fill various positions including Excavator Operators, Human
It was indeed a shock to me to come out here and see so many people. We said we would interview persons and look at their documents and then call them, but for all those persons who had all their relevant documentations, we hired them on the spot, especially those we would like to start working on Phase One of the project.
- Mrs. Lilowtie Chintamani, Human Resource ManagerResources Officer, Dispatcher, Banksmen/Operations Assistants, QHSSE Officers, QA/ QC Field Inspector, Technical Administration Assistants, and Cleaners.
Other advertised positions are slated to be filled from the numerous applications received during this career fair.
The interview today was great for me. The staff were really professional. I was hired on spot… so I am just looking forward to starting at GYSBI. I think it is a great company and I am excited to start.
I must say that I was hired on the spot for the position of Technical Admin... This is a really good opportunity for me because I was looking for betterment and I am studying to go into the oil and gas sector… I am just really overwhelmed by this opportunity.”
- Tenisha BandhuThe GYSBI Scholarship is a pioneering initiative as this technical scholarship is the first of its nature for GYSBI, as the company seeks to further support youths between the ages of 16 and 25 who are seeking educational and professional growth at any technical institution across Guyana.
This initiative will cover expenses such as travel, uniforms, study materials, registration, and examination fees, just to list a few. The GYSBI Scholarship received an overwhelming 280 scholarship requests from students registered at technical institutes in Essequibo, Leonora, Linden, Georgetown, Mahaicony, New Amsterdam and Upper Corentyne.
What we have found is that a lot of persons who are working in Operations have 10 or 20 years of experience because they were informally trained or they worked in the mining industry, etc. but they do not have formal education certificates. So, we want to be able to create and develop a workforce, which will be both experienced and certified three or five years from now. GYSBI, as a Guyanese company, has always focused on creating tangible opportunities for Guyanese and this is just another one of our initiatives geared at doing that.
- Robert Albiez, General ManagerAdditionally, this scholarship programme is designed to offer GYSBI internships to applicants during their semester break. This internships will provide each successful applicant with the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on training and knowledge from experienced GYSBI staff, while gaining experience in Guyana’s dynamic oil and gas sector.
GYSBI hosted an Emancipation Dress Competition for our members of staff in three categories - Female Individual Category, Male Individual Category and Best Dressed Department.
For the Male Individual Category, Sule Collymore from the HR Department posed away with the first prize as he displayed his modern attire while Richard Lee copped the second prize and Hadaar London won the third prize with his indomitable confidence.
In the Female Individual Category, Tiffiany Accra from our Contracts Department copped the first prize with her traditional attire and creative
display. Ulancy Ross, our Warehouse Manager walked away with the second prize and Jasmine Grannum captured the third prize with her
representation of a traditional African woman.
For the group category, Team Finance emerged as the winner.
Congratulations to all participants for exhibiting their cultural attires while fostering team building.
GYSBI hosted two (2) groups of students, who are partaking in the Ministry of Natural Resources - Youth in Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme. This programme is geared at offering young Guyanese the opportunity to experience the country’s interior regions, to learn about the natural resources sector, and to access available job opportunities.
GYSBI fulfilled its role of facilitating this batch of students on a tour of our main base and industrial estate. This tour involved detailed discussions about our operations/what we do, our facilities, and various employment opportunities within Guyana’s oil & gas sector.
GYSBI organized a tour of our facilities for His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan
Ali and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Right Honourable Sir Tony Blair. Mr. Blair served as Prime Minister of the UK from 1997 to 2007 and is the first former or sitting British Prime Minister to visit Guyana.
During this tour, the highranking officials received a brief visual representation, via an array of photos, of GYSBI’s development from 2017 to present. Followed by a tour of
our main base and industrial estate, which was further enhanced with an overview of our operations being presented by members of our Management Team including
Eleven (11) students drawn from eight (8) regions across Guyana are the first recipients of the GYSBI Technical Scholarships, which was launched in July, 2023. Three (3) of the scholars are children of GYSBI Staff members, who applied and met the criteria. In a simple ceremony held recently to hand over the first tranche of financial support, Executive Director of GYSBI, Robin Muneshwer extended congratulations to the awardees, who were chosen out of a total of 300 applicants.
We talk about investing in the future or investing in our youth and that is what we are doing here today… at GYSBI, we do not start jobs, we start careers... The discipline that you place on your work, your attitude, the pride that you get out from your work… there is no dollar figure to that. That must come from within. The money will follow you… It’s what you translate your talent into that will count. That is your intrinsic ability that no training can do.
- Robin Muneshwer, Executive Director ManagerRabin Chandarpal, GYSBI’s Deputy General Manager in expressing similar sentiments noted that as Guyana continues to rise and opportunities are being created, avenues must exist for Guyanese, especially the young citizens, to benefit.
Education in an investment you make in yourselves. You will be supported by us with financial support of course, but also through this internship programme, you are also going to learn what we pride ourselves on at the shore base – our work ethics, values, discipline. While you are a part of our team, keep reaching out to us because we want to mentor you and help to prepare you for the opportunities that are available in Guyana. Do not waste this opportunity, grab it with both hands, be curious, be hard working and the future will be yours.
- Rabin Chandarpal, Deputy General ManagerMeanwhile, General Manager of GYSBI, Robert Albiez in brief remarks noted that he is extremely proud of the initiative and being able to see it materialize from just a thought.
“I remember this was just an idea that we had a couple years ago and thanks to the hard work of our team, we have been able to pull this off today. This is something we are absolutely proud to do, to start this initiative and my hope is that this becomes a great thing that will long outlast my time at GYSBI and even the rest of the group here.
Kevin Black, who serves as the Operations Manager, noted that over the five years he has been at the company, there has been tremendous growth and development, which have been complemented by large investments in the young members of staff. He urged the awardees to take full advantage of the opportunity they have been provided as there are vast possibilities that exist for them at the shore base.
With knowledge, there is power.
Cogratulations young scholars.
It is my wish to give back to my community in the planning, designing and construction of projects such as much needed roads but regardless of what projects I find myself working on in the future, it would give me great pleasure to contribute to national development at such a crucial time in Guyana’s history. My parents, like most in my rural village, are of limited means and could not afford my studies so I see this scholarship as a big relief.
“the morning I was called and told that I was selected as a recipient, I was and still is overwhelmed with joy. I am so pleased and will forever be grateful for this opportunity given by GYSBI. I am very passionate about becoming one of Guyana’s best female welders and GYSBI has given me the chance to gain more knowledge and experience to be the best within this field.
On Wednesday, September 27th, 2023, we hosted our third quarterly blood drive where we collected 19 units of blood for the National Blood Transfusion Services (Blood Bank).
Our Deputy General Manager, Rabin Chandarpal, led these donation efforts.
Earlier this year, GYSBI received an award from the Ministry of Health in recognition of the role
we play by hosting regular blood drives to ensure the National Blood Bank has frequent blood for medical emergencies. Our previous blood drives held in February and June of this year yielded 21 units and 34 units of blood, respectively.
To reward our donors, we have launched a raffle which will give one lucky staff a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy S23 or an Iphone 15 at the end of the year.
Being a female supervisor in a male-dominated field has been nothing short of challenging on most days. My journey at GYSBI began almost five (5) years ago as a Banksman/Operations Assistant and I have always been dedicated to my job.
I have always been the type of employee who ensures my 12-hours on shift are well spent.
I am always either working or learning from someone.
Management recognized this trait of mine and I was promoted to Foreman but, overseeing a team of men is not an easy task as many days I wondered if these men respected me as much as they respected my male colleagues. However, I did not let these thoughts shake my confidence. I continued leading to the best of my abilities and in return, my best was good enough because again, Management awarded me with a promotion as the only female Logistics Supervisor in the company. This boosted my confidence because I have
realized the potential Management recognized to entrust me with this new and significant role. I have since stopped questioning myself. I perform to my daily tasks to the best of my ability. I ensure that I not only pass orders but lead by example and even share my knowledge with anyone who is willing to learn.
It is not always sunshine and rainbows, however, since I am a working mom of two beautiful girls, I cannot always be at home with them or partake in school activities. But I always explain to them the importance of making your mark in society and the value of hard work, so I lead by example.
My girls will always have me as an example of what it means to climb the ladder of success, step by step, through hard work and perseverance.
Safe Choice is a safety training program that will empower and enable safe decision making at all levels within GYSBI by providing new knowledge and techniques linked directly to GYSBI’s current safety tools and systems, delivering a positive transformational change in safety performance. The program is designed to instill a culture of effective safety leadership and provides personal knowledge on decision-making, cognitive
biases, fast and slow thinking, and present motivation.
Twelve (12) members of the QHSSE team from across the different crews and work areas participated in the 3-week training. During the first week, they were trained by the Safe Choice development team; Ingenium. Through weeks 2-3, they were assessed as they delivered the Safe Choice training to their colleagues in the operations department.
To date, 174 (27%) of GYSBI’s employees have been trained by the new trainers.
Additionally, the twelve (12) QHSSE team members along with one of GYSBI’S Project Managers, were trained as Safe Choice coaches, who will continue field conversations on all four (4) training topics and follow-up on the achievement of their Safe Choice goals.
The Safe Choice training programme utilizes GYSBI’s current safety tools and enhances them with an array of behavioral based safety subjects.
Safety tools commonly used in GYSBI are the Life Saving Rules (LSR), GOARC Safety Report (O&I), GYSBI Intervention Tool, Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), & Stop Look Assess Manage (SLAM). These were infused with the rich Safe Choice content which covers Cognitive Biases, Fast & Slow thinking, Decision Making Styles, & Present Motivation.
The remaining 482 GYSBI employees will be trained from Sept. 15, 2023, through Dec. 15, 2023; the target is to conduct
two (2) sessions weekly.
Participants will be guided through all Safe Choice concepts with the trainers, and in conclusion, will be asked to develop a Personal Action Plan on how they will make safer choices on the job.
All trained personnel, with the assistance of the coaches will go through three (3) Documented Coaching Sessions; each at 30day intervals, to reinforce the principles of the Safe Choice training and accomplish their Personal Action Plan set on the day of the training.
This promises to be an intriguing journey because every employee will have a different mix of decision-
making styles, be prone to their own types of cognitive biases, make decisions quickly or slowly, and be presently motivated in different ways, but ultimately, they will learn how to effectively manage each and cover their blind spots to work safely at GYSBI.
A Safe Choice Performance Coach position has been developed and will support the Safe Choice trainers and coaches across all crews and departments with integrating the human performance principles and safe choice concepts into the GYSBI safety tools.
GYSBI received a visit from the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH), an entity of the Ministry of Labour, which wanted to observe and assess our operational best practices in the areas of safety and health as part of its commitment to promoting occupational safety.
The NACOSH team was impressed by the number of safety procedures we instill and continuously practice to protect our staff and anyone who visits our locations. At GYSBI, we pride ourselves with ensuring that everyone goes home safe.
