USA Dignitaries toured GYSBI’s shore base facilities
In January, GYSBI hosted for a visiting delegation from the United States of America, which was led by the former United States Secretary of State, Mr. Mike Pompeo. Accompanying him were Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Vickram Bharrat, Head of the Local Content Secretariat, Mr. Martin Pertab, and an array of investors from the United States.
The delegation was received, welcomed and given a broad overview of our operations by members of the management team, which included our General Manager, Robert Albiez, Deputy General Manager, Rabin
Chandarpal, Base Manager, Stephen Clark; and QHSSE Manager, Kurt Busuttil.
The request for the tour came through the Government of Guyana and was aimed at showcasing some of the massive infrastructural developments, which have taken place in Guyana over the past six years as a result of the oil and gas economic boom. GYSBI is one such example.
The visit was also geared at providing some of the investors with an overview of ongoing projects and developments in Guyana, which can become business opportunities.
GYSBI expands scholarships programme to target Region Three students
GYSBI has expanded its second year of the Technical Scholarship programme to ten students from the Essequibo Islands - West Demerara, Region Three.
Executive Director of GYSBI, Robin Muneshwer has announced that this initiative is specifically geared towards students from Region Three since GYSBI, though known for its shore base services, also specializes in construction and has been executing works over the past year at the proposed Gas to Energy (GTE) site in Wales, West Bank Demerara.
As such, Muneshwer noted that the company wants to give back in a tangible way to the communities in that region.
Before working with LINDSAYCA CH4, GYSBI was hired by ExxonMobil Guyana to carry out the Early Works and Heavy Haul Road project at the site. This encompassed the erection of five bridges, an access road, a heavy transport road, and the preliminary site groundwork for the Integrated Plant Site. Our presence in this region has been established over a short period of time, and we aim to make a significant impact. This will be achieved not only through our part in this transformative Gas to Energy project, but also by making investments especially in these students, who represent the future of this region.
- ROBIN MUNESHWER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GYSBI
The organization’s goal is to develop a programme that is useful to young Guyanese and ensure that they are constructively engaged and equipped with a life skill. While this programme currently has a cohort of eleven (11) students drawn from eight (8) regions across Guyana, the company intends to make a bigger impact and expand its footprint in Region Three (3).
- ROBERT ALBIEZ, GENERAL MANAGER OF GYSBI
The GYSBI Scholarship covers expenses such as travelling, uniform, study materials, registration, and examination fees. Each beneficiary will receive an annual sum of up to GYD$500,000 fully paid to cover their academic expenses.
Eligible applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 25, must gain admission or be in the process of applying to the respective technical institute, and must be a resident of Region Three. Special consideration will be given to students from the West Bank of Demerara and children of staff who are currently employed on the GTE Project. During their semester breaks, successful applicants are offered internships with the company in efforts to gain hands-on training and knowledge. At the end of their studies, applicants will be afforded the opportunity to be fully employed by the company.
The GYSBI Scholarship aims to build a cadre of qualified workers, supervisors and managers for the Oil and Gas, construction and other sectors of the economy.
GYSBI celebrates 250 Days LTI Free, 1,000,000cm3 sand delivery and placement at the Gas to Energy Site
GYSBI is pleased to announce that it has achieved a milestone of 250 Days free of Loss Time Injuries (LTIs), and the delivery and placement of 1,000,000cm3 of sand on the site at Wales, West Bank Demerara, which is being prepared for the Gas to Energy (GTE) Project.
LTI refers to an injury sustained on the job, which results in the loss of productive work time. Lost time injuries include permanent disabilities or temporary wounds that keep the employee away from work for a day; also conditions which prevent the employee from performing their regular work tasks or returning to work.
GYSBI was contracted by LINDSAYCA CH4 to execute Earth, Soil Remediation and Surcharge works at the site. Physical works commenced on August 31, 2023 and closed at the end of March 2024.
Prior to this engagement with LINDSAYCA CH4, GYSBI was contracted by ExxonMobil Guyana to execute the Early Works and Heavy Haul Road at the site. This included the construction of five bridges, an access road, a heavy haul road, and the initial site preparation for the Integrated Plant Site.
In brief remarks at a simple ceremony to mark these achievements, Executive Director of GYSBI, Robin
Muneshwer said that the work the company has been doing at the site is nothing short of remarkable.
It started when we won the Early Works project with Exxon. It was a small project at the time, and it was in the middle of the jungle. We won the Heavy Haul Road project and then migrated to the LINDSAYCA CH4 project, which we are at now. I am blown away by what we have been able to achieve in the middle of nowhere. To achieve this record in safety in this harsh territory is quite a feat. Importantly, this 250 days LTIs free is only for the LINDSAYCA Project. This does not include those works that we did for ExxonMobil earlier on.
- ROBIN MUNESHWER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GYSBI
On the logistics side, Mr. Muneshwer indicated that due to the distance and location of the project, moving materials such as sand, proved to be a challenge. However, the company was able to work around these challenges and has transported and placed over 1,000,000cm3 sand at the site.
“The significance of this project cannot be overstated in national terms because power has been one of the issues that has been plaguing Guyana for many decades. It has plagued businesses; we do not have cheap sources of power for manufacturing, etc. So, this project is the absolute game changer for Guyana. When we start generating power, transmitting, and distributing it, that is when this country is really going to move ahead in a significant way. Everyone should feel proud to be involved in such a project. This is what you will be passing on to your kids and grandkids and you can tell them that you played a part in this project.”
- ROBIN MUNESHWER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GYSBI
Almir Dapo, Construction Manager for the Project, echoed similar sentiments as he reminisced on the challenges that were encountered in accessing the site and commencing the preparatory works.
“I am happy that we are here to celebrate something that is huge in numbers. We started here in 2022 with Exxon and I remember it was a very small team building the roads, etc. For us back then, we were coming to an empty area filled with forest. There were no roads or bridges. Today, we have built the bridges, roads and now selfdischarging barges are coming here every day to deliver sand. [This achievement] took a lot of trucks, movements, day shifts and night shifts.”
- ALMIR DAPO, CONSTRUCTION MANAGER FOR THE PROJECT
Project Manager at the site, Evgenii Angarskii shared that more than 200 pieces of equipment operate at the site. The equipment is complemented by 250 staff members, who are directly employed with GYSBI. With the inclusion of third-party contractors and service providers, the site sees more than 400 people every day.
