- Dr. Jagdeo tells Guyanese; urges them to turn up on September 1 and vote solidly for the PPP/C - touts party’s track record of delivering to the people

FRAMING the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) as an unshakeable force, the PPP General Secretary and Guyana’s Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo told a ‘tsunami of red’ on Sunday, that to ensure the visible national progress continues, they need to hit the ground, work in communities and be out in their numbers to vote on September 1.

With force and fervour, Dr. Jagdeo at his party’s campaign launch at the Kitty Market Square, Georgetown, launched a high-energy address, telling the Guyanese electorate: “What is important for elections is getting the people out to vote and getting those votes counted… Bring people out to vote so when the votes are counted, this overwhelming victory will be a reality.”

He also told the citizens to judge the government on its track record and not fall prey to fantasy economics and hollow promises.

“We can't take chances with the lives of our people and our children's future… We're about development, we are about your country… But what is important for elections is getting people out to vote and getting the votes counted. The internet doesn't vote,” Dr. Jagdeo told the roaring crowd.

With a bold voice and a clear message, Dr. Jagdeo did not even stress on the impact of his party’s performance from 2020-2025, noting that the people feel it for themselves.

More than 60,000 jobs restored, nearly 40,000 citizens studying at tertiary level, 42,000 persons trained, and the numerous economic and social programmes created and restored, Dr. Jagdeo briefly noted while stressing that enhancing citizens’ lives is what matters to his party.

“You are our priority!” he told supporters.

Reflecting on how the lo-

cal economy has progressed from being strangled by disastrous policies and over 300 taxes under the former APNU+AFC regime, Dr. Jagdeo pointed out how his party has granted free tertiary education to all Guyanese, restored the “Because We Care” cash grant to the nation’s children along with the joint services bonus, removed the APNU+AFC’s burdensome taxes, among other initiatives.

Dr. Jagdeo said: “We have restarted the development of the Amerindian communities. We rehired sugar workers. We assisted the rice farmers. The miners too got their taxes reduced. The public servants saw increase of over $120 billion dollars per year in wages and salaries. Women were helped. Children were helped, every group of Guyanese and that's why you must be so proud that your party delivered.”

The government’s investments in education, health, housing, small businesses, reducing electricity and water rates and other areas have led to the strong support that the PPP/C is receiving, Dr. Jagdeo noted.

“Those who supported the PPP and voted for us in 2020 must stand here with a great sense of pride and joy,” he emphasised.

While emphasising that the PPP/C is both trustworthy and unifying, he further stated: “You've seen the transformation in your lives, in your children's life… We have laid out plans for the future, unlike any other party.”

Speaking on what is to come if the PPP/C is re-elected, the General Secretary promised more jobs, more cash grants, more care for the elderly and children and a transformative Guyana backed by a digital society.

PPP/C HAS DELIVERED!

Dr. Jagdeo heavily criticised the political opponents, who, according to him, are avoiding the press and hiding

‘Our greatest chapter is still ahead of us’

- PPP remains only party with clear strategic plan for every community, region

- President Ali says, urges Guyanese to preserve dignity and shun those attempting to ‘buy’ votes

OUTLINING a future built on a forward-looking strategy, visionary leadership and unity, President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday reminded a mammoth gathering of supporters that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) remains the engine of development and prosperity for all Guyanese.

Pledging continued investment in home ownership, agriculture, health, education and other key sectors, the Head of State stressed that economic stability is not a luxury but a right for all Guyanese.

His address was welcomed by a massive gathering of supporters at the Kitty Market Square, Georgetown, coating the streets in the party’s signature fiery red paraphernalia.

“We don't promise to build castles in the sky. We build schools, hospitals, roads, jobs, homes, and hope. We don't say things to win elections. We say things we mean. We do what

we say and the last five years we have proven that we are the party that delivers, the party that performs,” the President said.

He noted that while Guyana is rising ‘better and stronger’ every day, the true enduring force behind the country’s development is the people.

“Your faithfulness, your trust, your conviction, your openness and your love, that is what keeps us going every day.

… You are the best part of us,” Dr. Ali said acknowledging thousands of supporters.

Pledging continued investment in home ownership, agriculture, health, education and other key sectors, he emphasised the government’s plans to widen income streams for families through co-investments, innovative financial vehicles, and support for small businesses under the banner “Forward Together for a Better Guyana”.

These initiatives will build on the momentum of the party’s track record over the past

five years which has seen the country being recognised as the fastest growing economy in the world and proudly boasting about its food security capabilities alongside an array of social policies such as housing development, free education from the nursery to tertiary levels and support for the elderly.

With these policies, President Ali noted that his party has been ‘converting real dreams’ into realities.

“The records show it. More than 50,000 house lots, 50,000 dreams turning into homes, into futures, into families on solid ground. World-class hotels we're building, and people are investing in world-class hotels. People don't invest in a sinking ship. People invest in a rising tide. People do not take risks with their money if they don't see a future, if they don't think profitability, if they don't see success. And the world, the world is converging on Guyana today.”

As the party looks to confront the future, Dr. Ali noted

all citizens can look forward to even greater initiatives.

To this end, he reminded that the PPP/C remains a party that blurs the lines of division and racism.

“When I watch across this crowd, I don't see Afro-Guyanese, I don't say Indo-Guyanese, I don't see Amerindian, I don't see Portuguese, I see Guyana, the one Guyana we are building. This was the aspirations of those that toil before us.”

CO-INVESTMENTS, WEALTH CREATION, INFRASTRUCTURE

Dr. Ali further emphasised the government’s plans to widen income streams for families through co-investments, innovative financial vehicles, and support for small businesses.

“When we build, we don’t just build, we build smarter and faster,” he emphasised adding:

“The strategy is to create

‘We Promised and Delivered!’

BEFORE a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters waving flags and chanting slogans, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret'd) Mark Phillips delivered a spirited address, reaffirming the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C) commitment to national unity and inclusive governance.

“We promised and we have delivered,” he declared, underscoring the party’s track record on economic growth and development at the official launch of its elections campaign on Sunday at the Kitty Market Square, Georgetown.

“This is the national party, this is the multi-ethnic party. We believe in diversity,” he said.

The Prime Ministerial Candidate assured the crowd of his readiness to serve once again alongside President Dr. Irfaan Ali, pledging to continue the momentum the PPP/C has built over the past five years.

“A vote for the PPP/C is a vote for five more years

of growth. A vote for the PPP/C is a vote for five more years of development. A vote of the PPP/C is for five years of visionary strategic leadership,” Phillips proclaimed to thunderous applause.

Speaking candidly, the prime minister addressed the opposition coalition,

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), accusing it of using race to divide and marginalise those who cross ethnic or political lines.

“Diversity for them is an afterthought,” PM Phillips told the crowd. “We believe in diversity from day one, 75 years ago… this is a national party, a multi-ethnic party; all the people are here, all the people are included.”

He further dismissed what he called the “coalition of the lightweights” and promised that the PPP/C government would continue to outline policies that would touch every sphere of the country, urging the electorate to not be distracted or swayed by the slogans being portrayed by the opposition.

“We are heavy weights.

your wealth at your personal and family level, at your community level, but to also reduce the tax burden, to also ensure that our policies are crafted to give you more disposable income in your pocket.”

He noted that there will be continued investments enhancing security, ensuring that every Guyanese, especially women are safe and protected.

Farmers and miners too can look forward to enhanced benefits as the government’s plans are not simply just about money, but creating and crafting policies that will bolster development and personal growth outside of salary increases and monetary support.

“You can expect that we are going to do more for you as we confront the future. Our greatest chapter is still ahead of us. The choice that keeps Guyana moving forward, lifting every family, strengthening every community, and unlocking the

full promise of our future,” he added.

YOUR VOTE

IS YOUR DIGNITY

Just before concluding his address, President Ali warned citizens to be wary of other political contenders who may attempt to ‘buy’ votes and steer them away from development. He warned that such attempts are ‘classless’ and disrespects the dignity of citizens. President Ali was candidly addressing the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Azruddin Mohamed, who entered the political scene despite being sanctioned by the United States of America for evading taxes and charged locally.

Contrasting his political opponents with the record of the PPP/C, President Ali reminded that his administration has been ‘tested and proven’ and draws a clear line between division, lies, and visionless plans.

- PM Phillips ignites crowd with vision of five more years

We have brought five years of development to Guyana, and you know what. You go to every part of Guyana, every region, every village, every community.”

To this end, he pointed to the ongoing roll out of several massive infrastructure projects such as the construction of the new Demerara River Bridge, the Mackenzie- Wismar bridge in Linden and several other initiatives aimed at bettering the lives of citizens.

“These are things that were dreamed about by the people on the other side,” Phillips said.

BE FOCUSED, BE SERIOUS

Appealing to the youths, he urged supporters to stay focused and ensure they are registered to vote.

“A vote, come September 1st, is a vote for con-

tinued advancement… be focused and be serious.”

“Let us keep focus, don't be distracted. Five years ago, we came, and we asked you to work with us to be stronger together for a better Guyana. Today, we are moving forward. You know we have strengthened ...the Red Army is bigger today than it ever was,” he added.

Dismissing the notion that youths are not interested in politics, the PM emphasised that the PPP/C administration has not only supported young people through targeted policies but is also leading by example with a diverse leadership team that reflects the party’s founding philosophy.

“The PPP was formed by youths. The PPP today is led by youths.”

‘Youth, vision, momentum’

CENTRING young people at the heart of its party, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), on Sunday, officially launched its re-election campaign for the September 1 General and Regional Elections with a slate filled with fresh faces and a message grounded in real development.

Thousands of energised supports gathered at the Kitty Market Square, Georgetown, not just to celebrate the party’s impressive track record but also to rally behind a movement that looks and sounds like the future of Guyana.

At its 2025 re-election campaign in Georgetown, the PPP/C presented a wave of young and first-time candidates under the theme ‘Forward Together for a Better Guyana’.

While the opposition is scrambling to gather a crowd and continues with uninspiring messages, the PPP/C is rolling out a campaign powered by fresh

faces and bold ideas. The party will be submitting a list with some 25 PPP/C candidates who are all under 25 years old, today for Nomination Day.

Leading cardiologist, Dr. Mahendra Carpen, a Berbician, who is a proud son of a cane cutter emphasised that the PPP/C is backed by a proven track record and a clear plan to lead Guyana. Standing before a mammoth crowd, he said that he spent the last 25 years serving Guyana both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Carpen, who has worked

in the Caribbean, United States of America (USA) and Canada gave his view on Guyana’s health transformation.

“I can tell you that what I have seen in healthcare in Guyana is unmatched anywhere else that I have been. The pace of development, the sheer scope, the thought process that goes into this cannot be bought, it cannot be imported from overseas. This is true visionary leadership that comes from a very talented group of leaders,” he said.

Reflecting on when the nation was facing the novel

COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Carpen said it was the commitment given by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali and Guyana’s Vice-President and PPP General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo to ease the burdens on the ordinary citizens, that is among the reasons why he has thrown his support behind the PPP/C.

“God bless you! God Bless the PPP! And God Bless Guyana! Five more years!” a vibrant Dr. Carpen firmly stated.

Roger Rogers, an economist and former University of Guyana lecturer, credited the

party’s sustained investment in young people. “The youth is the future of this country, and we have invested and will continue to invest in the youth,” he said. “My choice to support the PPP can be easily explained.”

GOOD POLICIES AND OPPORTUNTIES FOR YOUTHS

Meanwhile, former executive member of the People's National Congress Reform (PNCR), attorney-at-law Thandi McAllister spoke about her endorsement of the current administration.

McAlister, who spent most of her youth with the PNCR, said she was asked many times by her former colleagues about why she now supports the PPP/C.

“Open your eyes! Look around and with a clear conscience, and tell me, ‘Why not?’” she said, pointing to the development that is taking place.

McAllister also reflected on how President Ali navigated the tough waters when the APNU+AFC attempted to subvert the will of the electorate in the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

Tricia Richards, former APNU+AFC councillor in Georgetown, positioned the PPP/C as the only national party for Guyana.

“The red wave is sweeping the whole of Guyana,” the PPP/C candidate told the roaring sea of red.

Richards, without any hesitation, proudly endorsed President Ali and the PPP/C for re-election.

She said since she joined the PPP/C family: “I have not gotten anything else other than pure love, pure respect and support.”

“There has never been a better time to be young and Indigenous in Guyana… the Guyana we know today did not happen by accident,” said Sarah Browne of the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO).

Browne praised the administration’s policies on housing, education, and opportunity. “Five years have come and gone in the blink of an eye and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic has taken Guyana by storm… many of us are now the first in our families to go to the Univer-

sity of Guyana, to own our own homes, to lift our families out of poverty… the PPP/C has been tested and proven,” she declared.

From the Essequibo Coast, young leader Azizi Christiani echoed the message of inclusion: “This party believes that young people are not just the future but the present,” he said, “and that is why we are getting the opportunity now to lead.”

Sonia Latchman, Toshao of Bethany and Vice-Chair of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) also endorsed President Ali.

Vanda Pio, a 20-year-old candidate from Region Eight used her time on stage to urge voters to support the governing party. “Support the Party, like me, to ensure continued opportunities for youth across the country,” she said. Additionally, Lenox Shuman, who previously served as presidential candidate of the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) told the crowd that one cannot follow those who are “visionless” and hence why his support is with the PPP/C.

Shuman proudly stated that he joined the PPP/C after witnessing the significant investments in indigenous communities and young people.

“It is the investment in youths that brought me to this party…. we should never gamble with our future; we should never gamble with our children’s future,” he said.

Former national cricketer and businessman Steven Jacobs paused during his speech to admire how the sea of red was stretched throughout Kitty, Georgetown, stating: “This is not a rented crowd. This is not a manufactured crowd.”

He threw his support behind President Ali. “We have a decision to make on September 1 and let us not worry about personalities,” he told the crowd. “Let us ensure we vote for someone with a vision, someone with a plan and someone with a track record.”

Candidates Vickash Ramkissoon and Mishka White rounded out the evening, underscoring the PPP/C’s commitment to shaping a diverse, youth-driven future.

Figueira calls on political leaders to condemn intimidation, violence

EMPASISING that every citizen has the right to choose a political party of their liking, former People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) member Jermaine Figueira is urging supporters to disassociate themselves from “illegal and dangerous political behaviour”.

He addressed these issues in a Letter to the Editor, where he underscored the importance of firm, clear and responsible leadership, and for proper political decorum.

“As our country moves through another election

‘We

cycle, I, like many other Guyanese, have observed recent incidents of illegal and dangerous political behaviour by some supporters from various political parties. Those behaviours have raised serious concerns that should be strongly condemned and not encouraged. Such actions, whether through intimidation, threats, or aggressive posturing, can potentially undermine the peace and democratic rights essential to a fair electoral process.”

“We must accept that in any democracy, every citizen has the right to

associate with a political party of their choice and to participate in political activities without fear. When this right is threatened, the legitimacy of the election itself is at risk. The responsibility to protect that

can’t take chances...

behind hashtags, courting the electorate through social media or are making hollow promises, pointing out that they have no policies.

He said: “They have no vision, no plan. They don't have any achievements. And they're all about racism. And this country wants to move forward. So, if you are sitting at home, undecided now, this is the party for you. This is the party. Judge us on what we stand for, which is unity, progress; a party that takes care of people. We're not perfect as a party. There are so many things more we need to do in this country. We have to deliver the world-class health care, world- class education we promised. We have to continue developing safer streets and secure communities.”

The General Secretary also highlighted the strength of the PPP/C and how it has remained firm and steady even when 16 political parties were stacked against them in 2020.

“We have grown stronger; we are bigger as a party. So, that's why the victory on September 1st would be a massive one for the People's Progressive Party. So, it doesn't matter who they stack against us, one party, two party, three parties, whatever they stack against us, we are clear about that,” Dr. Jagdeo said.

The PPP/C kicked off its re-election campaign on Sunday with a thunderous rally that, Dr. Jagdeo said was not just a political event, it was a statement.

While the opposition is scrambling to gather a

crowd and dust off its tired message, the PPP is rolling out a campaign powered by fresh faces and bold ideas and are marching ahead to submit over twenty-five (25) PPP/C candidates who are under 25 years old, today for Nomination Day.

“Over 25 of our candidates are under 25 years old. Young people, as well as experienced people, people of every race. Our list would look like Guyana. It would feel like Guyana because that's what we are in the People's Progressive Party, the only national party,” Dr. Jagdeo told the roaring crowd.

Thousands of Guyanese, both young and old, turned campaign energy into a political statement this weekend, rallying behind the 75-year-old PPP/C as it launched a bold, youth-driven bid for re-election.

As the PPP/C marches onwards, with thousands of Guyanese rallying behind it, Dr. Jagdeo said, the opposition parties are struggling to catch momentum, drawing thin crowds and offering few answers for a youth population that still remembers their last term in office which was marred by economic burdens.

right lies first and foremost with all political leaders involved in the electoral process,” he said.

It would appear that Figueira was referring to WIN supporters aggressively removing PPP/C party flags in the presence of their leader, US-sanctioned Azruddin Mohamed, and the backlash persons who have left the opposition to support President Dr. Irfaan and his party are receiving.

The flag incident was captured on video and posted on Facebook. A report has since been made

to the police, and the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC).

Further, Figueira called for political leaders to denounce violence and intimidation.

“This leadership required must not only disavow violence and intimidation, but must also actively and strongly condemn and prevent it. Silence in the face of such actions is complicity. A unified or individualised public statement from all political parties denouncing these behaviours is what is urgently needed

to reassure the public, and set a tone of respect and civility.

“All parties, their activists and supporters must accept that democracy thrives on dialogue, not division. All stakeholders, leaders, supporters, civil society, religious bodies, and the media must play their part in promoting tolerance and peace. But above all, political leaders must lead by example and make clear that the rule of law and mutual respect will guide this election period,” he said.

Jermaine Figueira

The Red Wave

A RED wave swept through the Kitty Market Square on Sunday as the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) launched its campaign for re-election under the banner, "Foward Together for a Better Guyana".

The crowd, which averaged over 30,000, was a strong political message at a time when a party in blue, which is yet to face the media or present a plan for development, has been using social media to give the impression that it enjoys widespread support.

Vice-President of Guyana and PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo shared an important reminder relevant to today’s digital world: "The Internet doesn't vote; people do, and we have the numbers here," he said.

This statement, while simple, gets to the core of today’s political conversations in Guyana, where social media has become a battlefield for influence and perception.

The rise of Online political activity has created a risky illusion, where likes, shares, and comments are mistaken for real electoral support.

Dr. Jagdeo's focus on actual turnout instead of Online approval shows a deep understanding of Guyana's political scene, where true grassroots mobilisation often beats digital popularity.

Since regaining power in 2020, the PPP/C has effectively grasped ground-level politics. The party has delivered on over 90% of its Manifesto promises by improving everyday life for citizens.

With more than 60,000 jobs created, over 50,000 house lots distributed, and significant investments in healthcare infrastructure, including 12 new hospitals, the PPP/C has built a solid record of real achievements that resonate beyond social media buzz.

These successes create a powerful story that goes beyond Online chatter, and speaks directly to voters’ real experiences. The strength of the PPP/C’s support base lies in how it has grown naturally. The party has attracted former opposition figures, including notable individuals like Geeta Chandan-Edmond, James Bond, Dr. Richard Van-West Charles, and Region Four officials Daniel Seeram and Samuel Sandy, who have openly backed President Irfaan Ali's leadership.

As Attorney-General Anil Nandlall noted, this loss of support for the opposition marks a key change in Guyana's political landscape that also cannot be countered by social media tricks.

The division among opposition forces only strengthens the PPP/C's advantages.

This electoral math, along with the party's proven governance during a time of strong economic growth from oil revenues, offers a strong argument for continuity that appeals to practical voters.

Yet, the PPP/C’s greatest strength is its ability to stay connected with communities across Guyana's diverse ethnic and geographic landscape.

While opposition parties face internal strife and leadership challenges, the PPP/C has kept up a busy schedule of com-

munity outreach, infrastructure projects, and direct voter contact, fostering lasting political relationships.

This strategy acknowledges that achieving sustainable political success requires more than a few viral moments; it needs ongoing efforts to improve people's lives and earn their trust.

The challenge for any democratic society in the digital age is telling the difference between real political momentum and fake Online enthusiasm.

Guyana's experience offers a valuable lesson on how traditional political organising remains important, even in an era dominated by social media.

The PPP/C's focus on voter turnout instead of Online engagement shows a mature understanding that elections are won through hard work in build-

ing alliances, delivering results, and gaining trust, not through algorithm-driven popularity or viral posts.

As Guyana heads towards its September 1 elections, the PPP/C's blend of proven governance and grassroots mobilisation seems well placed to navigate any digital noise from any opposition.

In a political setting where social media can be manipulated easily, and trust must be built through consistent actions, the party that emphasises real achievements while nurturing genuine community ties has a strong edge.

The sea of red at the Kitty Market Square was not just a campaign kickoff, it was a powerful reminder that in a true democracy, substance triumphs over show.

Dear Editor,

CONTRARY to the view propagated by opposition member, Ganesh Mahipaul that the APNU is “ready to lead Guyana into a new era of prosperity”, their proven historical track record and combined competencies as per their current configuration, are, unfortunately, not in their favour.

A critical assessment of their historical fiscal track record and their seemingly disjointed and unsustainable campaign rhetoric will in fact reverse the prosperity gains attained under the governing PPP/C administration, thus driving the economy into another era of poverty, macroeconomic disaster and bankruptcy.

Suffice it to state, the APNU’s incompetence is further exposed with their argument that they did not have access to the oil resources, yet they were able to build some roads and schools. This, however, is an audaciously false premise, which ought to be challenged and rejected in the strongest form.

It is worthwhile to note that in 2015, the APNU+AFC had inherited a solvent economy, with strong and stable macroeconomic fundamentals. In this respect, they inherited over $200 billion

in liquid cash in government deposit accounts and national reserves. Conversely, in 1992, the PPP/C inherited a bankrupt economy, with negative balances in the bank, zero reserves, and practically all the State entities were bankrupt, some of which had to have been wound up.

Lest we forget, it was the PNC, reincarnated as APNU+AFC that was in government for more than two decades since independence that ended with: A bankrupt economy with a debt-to-GDP nine times the size of the economy, or 900%, debt service was >150% of revenue, inflation rate was 87%, poverty rate was 97%, interest rate was over 40%, nil foreign exchange reserves, nil savings in the bank and GDP per capita US$428 Contrastingly, by 2011, the PPP/C government was able to restore economic and financial viability to the economy whereby: The debt-to-GDP plummeted to 0.5x the size of the economy or 50%, down from 9x or 900%, interest rates (prime lending rate) plummeted to 11% from 40%, foreign exchange reserves stood at US$750 million, representing five months of import cover, government deposit accounts stood at over $101 billion

and GDP per capita rose to US$5,000.

And, lest we forget, these outstanding macroeconomic outcomes attained between 1992 and 2011 were not under normal circumstances by any stretch of one’s imagination.

That was an era when the opposition in their previous incarnation as the PNC/R, sought to actively destabilize the country.

A few notable events in that regard were: 1992–1997: there was a short period of street protests and violence having restored democracy, following which the economy took off (short period of stability); 1997–2001: prolonged street protests and disruption; 2002–2003: prison break, the crime wave spiraled out of control and politically motivated disruptions; 2004–2008: unrests, politically motivated disruptions and 2008–2012: Lusignan, Lindo Creek, Bartica massacre, violence erupted when protestors blocked the Wismar Mckenzie bridge.

In addition, with the foregoing political challenges, there was the adverse economic impact engendered by the 2005 floods (a natural disaster) that resulted in a loss of 60% of GDP.

Notwithstanding the forego-

ing multiplicity of constraining factors, between 1992 and 2011, some of the most notable development projects undertaken by the PPP/C government include the following.

Firstly, the Berbice River Bridge. The Berbice River Bridge was the first project that was undertaken via a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The bridging of the Berbice River was a major development, identified in the 1996 NDS, which was a crucial project linking the counties of Demerara and Berbice, thereby facilitating ease of access, which effectively cut the travelling time from Georgetown to Berbice from almost an (8 hours) day travel with the ferry, to 3-4 hours.

Secondly, integration of the coastal highway system: resurfacing Mahaica to Rosignol Road, resurfacing of the West Coast Demerara Highway, Essequibo Coast Road, and extension of Soesdyke Linden Highway. Other new and rehabilitated road networks included: farm to market roads: Bartica-Issano, Black Bush Polder, Mabura-Lethem Roads, Hague, Enmore, Buxton, Mara, Nurney, Bushlot, Champagne, and Bath; urban Development Programme: Georgetown,

Norton Street, Robb Street, and streets around Stabroek Market area; New Amsterdam – Pitt Street, East, North and South of Pitt Street, New Amsterdam market: Rose Hall: J.C Chandisingh East Side Line Dam, Middle Street (North), the drains surrounding those streets and Rose Hall Town Hall; Corriverton: The Main Street Rampor, Cemetery Road, their related drains, and the No. 79 Village Market; in Linden: Residential Roads in Canvas City, and the McKenzie and Wismar Markets; rehabilitation of Mahaica / Rosignol Road; four lane road from DHB to Georgetown; rehabilitation of road from Harbour Bridge to Parika; construction of the Takatu Bridge linking Guyana and Brazil in Region Nine and the construction of a Multipurpose Stadium (Providence), modernization project of CJIA, and the Marriot Hotel Project.

Thirdly, the Electricity Sector: Rural Electrification Project, providing 55,000 customers with electricity. In 2002, the installed capacity of electricity was 90 MW with peak load of 67 MW. Investments were made of US$93 million for the period 2001-2005 to add another 40 MW of power, interconnection

of its three separate systems, reinforcement of the transmission and distribution networks and connection of new customers. In 2006, provision was made to add another 85 MW of power within two years, thus a total of 125 MW of power.

Fourthly, the Health Sector: Establishing (i) dental clinics at Moruca, Matthew’s Ridge, Sophia, Lethem, Kato, Paramakatoi, (ii) constructing health posts at Tassiwini, Itaballi, Mikwak, Orinduik, and Kuduwini; (iii) extending health care to Ithaca and constructing new centres at Bush Lot and Calcuni, (iv) rehabilitating Kamarang, New Amsterdam Skeldon Hospitals; and (v) new living facilities for nurses at Kwakwani and Suddie. During this period, a Materials Management Unit in the Health Sector was introduced.

Fifthly, the Education Sector: The Primary Education improvement Project delivered 37 new schools that were rebuilt and 68 that were rehabilitated among other things. HERE are the words of Christopher Ram about the attendance at the campaign launch of the APNU last Sunday: “It must trouble the PPP/C that for all its confidence from endorsements from recent members of the APNU/ PNC, from several cash grants with promises of more to come, from the convenient attendance of tens of thousands of parttime workers at its events, and the demonising of David Hinds, that the PNC-R, or APNU could attract such a crowd.”

I replied to Ram (Wednesday, July 9, 2025, “Christopher Ram’s understanding of politics”) and noted that “Chris should never have used the word “huge”, because any schoolboy will tell you that when the PPP is ready to launch, you will have to find another word to describe that attendance.”

And it happened yesterday. The election campaign launch yesterday was manifestly larger than the APNU’s. This was a staggeringly large crowd, and my view of it ended at 16:00hrs, when I began this column. People were pouring in long after 16:00hrs. I do not have the numbers for the attendees after 16:00hrs, but from what I observed at 16:00hrs, those crowds constituted perhaps the largest numbers of an election campaign by a political party.

I would like to see Ram’s take on why the PPP attracted such a large gathering. Let us look at Ram’s logic and use it against him. He argues that after the PPP dished out cash grants and demonised David Hinds, the APNU was able to secure a huge presence of supporters.

One can use Ram’s own methodology against him. For five years now, Ram has demonised the ruling party. For five years now, the Stabroek News has demonised the ruling party with more intensity than Ram. For more than five years now, the Kaieteur News has become insanely obsessed with condemning the government. For five years now, the PNC, AFC, Guyana Human Rights Association, Red Thread, Transparency International – Guyana Chapter,

“In The Diaspora” by Dr. Alissa Trotz, the Guyana Press Association, David Hinds, Rickford Burke, Lincoln Lewis, Tacuma Ogunseye and several poisonous anti-PPP Online news outlets have insanely condemned the government, to the point where many of these actors named above appeared to have become simply irrational.

Ram needs to tell the Guyanese people that with the gigantic encirclement of the PPP since August 2020, how did it manage to attract such massive numbers. Now it is obligatory on the part of Ram to explain the size of the crowd the PPP got yesterday as he did with the PNC’s showing at the Square of the Revolution.

I don’t know what Ram will say about those numbers, but I can guess the perspective of the Stabroek News, based on the newspaper’s interpretation of the PPP’s victory in the 2023 local government election.

The newspaper suggested that the PPP bribed citizens to vote for it.

So, are we going to see an editorial later this week in which the Stabroek News is going to postulate the bribing of citizens for them to come out at the rally yesterday? I may not be Guyana’s most competent analyst, but I think I do a fairly plausible job. Remember me when you read that particular editorial on the massive showing at the PPP’s election launch.

The newspaper is going to posit two theories as to why the PPP’s Sunday rally got such colossal numbers. One is people were intimidated, thus coerced to attend, and secondly, the PPP bribed people. The newspaper did it before in 2023 when the PPP won the local government elections, and it is going to do it again.

Unfortunately, we are not going to get Ram’s explanation. I don’t think he has one. How does one explain this mammoth display of support by the PPP at the campaign launch yesterday? We need no elaborate analysis on this issue. Mohamed Irfaan Ali is tremendously appreciated in Guyana, and his administration has transformed Guyana in four-and-a-half years in

ways in which Guyana in 2025 bears no resemblance to Guyana in 1995.

I believe the people of Guyana have seen the phenomenal transformation of this nation, and they see in President Ali a leader that

is in a hurry to take Guyana so high that Guyanese can see eternity. You look at that rally and the ocean of multi-racial folks wearing red and waving red, and you know Ali is going to be reelected. I believe

he will. Yesterday’s prodigious rally is testimony to this man’s ubiquitous popularity. Such popularity makes his continuation to 2030 a foregone conclusion.

No honour among brothers

AS the election season heats up, a potpourri of essentialists outpouring with all of its attending contrasts in full regalia (pun intended) are on display. As the faces, melanonid hues, economic status, occupational endeavours and educational attainment differ, so, too, are the political views of the population.

The variance of these viewpoints is given full expression in the fulfillment in our Constitution; this diversity ought to be celebrated. Beneath and

between those expressions yield fertile grounds for analysis, rumination, and jocular banter.

The right of the citizens to switch parties is an unalienated right of the individual. When people switch parties, we often comment on their motivation as we perceive them, and use their activism as talking points. Just as individuals and their own popularity are political entities in their own right, political parties do crystalise and concatenate into an entity with its own character and modus operandi. The

actions of political parties do give clues about their preferred MO.

The Aubrey Norton-led PNC seems to have a penchant for two main forms of political action when it comes to negotiating political relationships, either strong-arm or subterfuge. We need not look further than the relationship with the AFC. It is an electoral fact that the PNC has never won (historically) and very possibly is incapable of winning an election on its own under the current structure and configuration. So, it needed the

AFC in 2015 to accede to the seat of government.

One would think that that kind of partnership, which stretched as far back as 2011, will deserve some amount of residual sentimental value and a soft negotiating hand. Instead, even while negotiations were ongoing with the official AFC executive, PNC met with and plotted with a subgroup to upstage the AFC by switching to the PNC in a move that blindsided the AFC, leaving it to flounder.

The analysis is beyond free will. All the persons in the "Activists Class" that switched to the PNC/APNU are from AFC, their own partner. APNU made a deliberate decision to directly target AFC’s most active personnel to build their "coalition", with the overriding motivation to dodge making any formal commitment to AFC. They were brothers dwelling in the same house (the parliamentary opposition) which they built together. When AFC was ailing and broke, and needed love, protection and brotherhood, the PNC instead chose to slip a knife in the back of the AFC, enticed his woman, and then flaunt her in his face. This is called backstabbing, treachery, and betrayal.

The APNU has demonstrated that, given its MO, it cannot be trusted to act right by his own buddy and pal. Then, how can we trust it with government that is usually steeped in adversarial political relations? If PNC can be so savage with a brother,

what wouldn’t they do to an “enemy”? I wouldn’t trust them with my vote, and I suspect most Guyanese wouldn’t either. The persons expressing their constitutional “free will” to move from the AFC to the PNC are simply moving to a new part of the same side of the house and do not reflect a new or different way of thinking. They are simply co-conspirators and conniving participants in the plot to degut the AFC.

In contrast, the PPP was able to attract significant members of the “activists-class” from both the AFC and the PNC.

The true crossing of the floor has reached tsunamic proportions, and the tide continues to rise daily. Of course, we cannot ignore that there are formidable push factors, that just as many who left the PNC and crossed over to the PPP simply opted out of activism or went on to form new parties.

The push factors may be varied but all seem to lead back to Aubrey Norton and his leadership style. These activists cannot stomach to coexist with PNC’s MO under Norton. They have already voted with their feet. The big question remains: If they don’t trust their own leader, and wouldn’t be voting for him, why should I? Why should you?

Beyond the push factors, there are robust, enduring and unmistakable pull factors as demonstrated in the leadership of Dr. Irfaan Ali. Instead of vindictiveness, we see a party that is open to entertaining new views, accommodating people who

spent years opposing, and have brought with them a different world view. We see a country that is well managed, a guiding political philosophy of inclusiveness, and an embrace of diversity.

The PPP is indubitably a stronger and more diverse political entity than it has ever been, outside the first few years of its founding. I completed writing this piece hours before the party campaign launch yesterday afternoon, and no doubt the images are already circulating by the time you read this column. Big visual support gains were made in every demographic. To the extent it is able to consolidate and protect these gains is the extent to which the magnitude of its majority will extend.

Today is Nomination Day, and usually the days following, we see political activism on steroids; a turbo-charged political atmosphere. The parties with the freshest political legs usually jump out early, but those with the largest purse, personnel and experience can keep a continuous momentum. In that respect, the PPP looms large.

Today, the PPP stands as the party of promise, the party most likely to deliver and the party that is by far more trustworthy. The choice is clear as we move together for a better Guyana.

Opposition making ‘child’s play’ with your future

- Minister Rodrigues says, urges supporters to stay on course with country’s growth

- Minister Walrond, Shuman outline PPP/C’s forward-thinking, inclusive development

DISMISSING the A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) rent-to-own’ policy, Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, on Sunday reminded thousands of supporters that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic is already surpassing its housing-development targets, realising dreams and turning keys with every house lot that is delivered.

Minister Rodrigues emphasised that over 50,000 families now own land, with a majority of beneficiaries being women and young people.

“We don't have time for child's play…this party is a serious party, and when we announce our plans in devel-

opment, you know that it will become a reality, because you have seen it become a reality. And so, we will not stop the work in this party. We will not stop the work in the next government, we will continue to work until everybody owns their own piece of land and every Guyanese can have their own homes.”

She further criticised the

opposition plans, arguing that the PPP/C offers real ownership and financial independence through land distribution.

The party's mission is to ensure every Guyanese experiences prosperity and safety.

“They are talking about keeping people renting. We are talking about giving people ownership, giving people

land ownership, giving them their titles, giving them financial freedom.”

Meanwhile, Tourism, Industry and Commerce

Minister Oneidge Walrond highlighted the party’s commitment to inclusivity and development in Guyana, noting the government’s support for over 17,000 small businesses since 2020, compared

to fewer than 5,000 supported by previous administrations.

The PPP/C’s efforts she reminded, have led to significant job creation in tourism and small-business growth, particularly benefitting women and youth.

Stressing the government’s dedication to smart policies, thoughtful planning, and a future where no one is

left behind, Minister Walrond urged voters to support the PPP/C in the upcoming elections.

“Let me be clear, this development cannot and is not happening by accident. It is the result of thoughtful planning, smart policies, clear vision and a government that listens, that partners with its people, and a government that believes in building a future where no one is left behind.”

Pointing to the development reported in the country’s indigenous community, Lenox Shuman, a newer face joining the ranks of the PPP/C urged voters to consider the longterm impact of their vote on September 1, emphasising the PPP/C’s commitment to future generations.

In addition, construction of water treatment plant and water holding tanks, and the provision of water metres for Corriverton, Anna Regina and Parika.

Seventh, the Housing Sector: Approximately >100,000 low-income homes, house lots the regularization squatting areas were delivered during this period. To name a few: improve and develop new housing sites, Tuschen, Hampshire, Diamond, Golden Grove, Amelia’s Ward, Cornelia Ida, Mon Repos and Fortlands/ Ordinance, among others; new Housing Schemes developed in

Eccles, Vigilance, Cane Grove, Parfait/Harmony, West Watooka, and Culvert City; and development of housing Schemes at Bellwest, Sophia, Port Kaituma, Mabaruma, Orealla, and Siparutta, Anna Regina, Golden Grove, Supernaam, Diamond and Rose Hall.

Eight, other selected development initiatives: Rehabilitation and strengthening of the East Demerara and Abary Conservancy Dams; over $12.2 billion expended on poverty reduction programs for the period; over 6,000 youths were trained under the Youth Entrepreneurial Training Programme; farm to market roads providing access to more than 30,000 acres of agricultural land; development of industrial estates to support the private sector; and Essequibo Coast and West Demerara Sea Defence Projects.

Between 2015 and 2020 when the APNU+AFC returned to government, they virtually reversed the gains attained by the PPP/C government.

By the time the APNU+AFC demitted office in 2020, the PPP/C once again inherited weak macroeconomic fundamentals: by the end of February 2020, the government’s deposit accounts at the Bank of Guyana accumulated a whopping $82.4 billion deficit balance from a surplus position of $15 billion in 2015, while bearing in mind that these deposit accounts over the last two decades prior, had always recorded surplus balances as high as >$60 billion at one point. Additionally, the public sector’s total deposits in the commercial banks stood at $55.4 billion, giving rise―to―a deficit position of $26.5 billion or US$127 million, compared to a surplus position in 2015 of $84 billion or US$403 million.

Further, the Bank of Guyana’s International Reserves balance stood at US$595 million, which represented almost five months’ worth of import-cover in reserves at the end of 2014. However, by the end of February 2020, the reserves stood at US$548 million but was equivalent to less than 2.5 months’ worth of import-cover―thus, indicative of a weaker position from almost five months import cover in 2014, a perusal of the Auditor General’s reports for the period 2015-2020 revealed that the sum of approximately $930M was both unaccounted for; the controversial US$18 million signing bonus, which was hidden, was subsequently transferred to the Consolidated Fund, attributed to a legal challenge

mounted by the opposition at that time. This was a major violation of the Fiscal Management and Accountability Act 2003 (FMA); the overdraft on the Government deposit total $128 billion as of September 2020. These sums were unlawfully withdrawn as the former Finance Minister, Winston Jordan effectively circumvented the approval of and scrutiny of these withdrawals by the National Assembly, inter alia, in breach of the FMA Act and consequently, these were also not reported in the national stock of domestic debt which was subsequently regularized shortly after the incumbent Government assumed office in 2020.

Further, following the successful passage of the no-confidence motion in December 2018,

the Government, in accordance with the provisions in the Guyana Constitution, was deemed to be a caretaker Government. Under these circumstances, the Government, through the former finance minister, had no authority to expend monies from the capital budget. This was nonetheless blatantly disregarded and the full capital budget in 2019 was expended to the tune of $66 billion. Of note, this is exclusive of the sum expended during the period January to August 2020.

This is the APNU’s track record as far as fiscal prudence and financial management are concerned, which is evidently far from being prudent and fiscally responsible and sustainable. In the final analysis, if the APNU and AFC are allowed to have it

their way, the total stock of public debt would have risen from US$6 billion in 2024 to US$12 billion in 2025, effectively doubling the size of the total public debt, instead of US$7.6 billion based on the PPP/C’s budget 2025, resulting in a debt-to-GDP ratio of over 40%, up from 24%, in just one year. Note that this does not account for oil price volatility. What if oil price falls below $50/barrel?

It is against this background that the APNU is propagating an audaciously fallacious, unrealistic campaign rhetoric that would derive, in reality, the inverse (undesired outcomes) of what they are selling to the electorate.

Sincerely,

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues

PPP/C’s housing vision outshines opposition’s failed promises

- Minister Rodrigues

MINISTER within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, has delivered a sharp critique of the opposition’s housing proposals, describing them as jokey and lacking in credibility when compared to the proven track record of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government.

Addressing recent housing-related comments made by the opposition on the ‘Starting Point’ podcast, Minister Rodrigues stated that the coalition's record in office speaks for itself. “The plans of the opposition are laughable, because they had an opportunity not so long ago in government, and they broke all their promises. They did nothing to improve the housing sector, and they betrayed the trust of the Guyanese people, especially young people, especially women,” she said.

Against this backdrop, she highlighted what she described as a lack of priority placed on housing during the coalition’s tenure, noting, “The housing sector was not a priority for the APNU+AFC coalition government. There was no Ministry of Housing and Water. It came under the Ministry of Communities. So, it was clearly not a priority, because they relegated the ministry. You had a series of housing ministers that came and went, some only spent a few months.”

Contrasting that with what the PPP/C has accomplished, Rodrigues stated that the coalition during their time delivered only 7,000 house lots, while the current administration has surpassed its 50,000-house lot distribution target, of which 90 per cent went to low, moderate, and middle-income earners. She also questioned the

opposition’s credibility in proposing new housing solutions after their past failures. “You’re coming to us five years later and saying, I'll do better… You suddenly have the better or more superior plan. But politics doesn’t work like that. Leadership doesn’t work like that. You have to earn people’s trust. You have to earn their confidence,” the minister said.

With this, she dismissed the opposition’s latest “rentto-own” proposal, stating that it is financially unsustainable and inconsistent.

“Their plans keep changing by the way, which shows you that it is not a serious plan. They haven't tested it. They don't believe in the plan. They are throwing it out there and seeing the kind of reception it will get from the public,” she said.

“When they first announced their plans at their press conference, it wasn't

FITUG endorses President

Ali for a second term

- highlights proven commitment to uplifting the working class, excellent leadership and nation building efforts

THE following is a full statement issued by the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) on Sunday:

“The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG), the nation’s leading trade union body representing thousands of Guyanese workers, is pleased to offer its full and unequivocal endorsement of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for a second term in office.

This endorsement is rooted in President Ali’s proven commitment to the upliftment of the working class, his people-centred leadership, and his steadfast focus on building a stronger, fairer, and more resilient Guyana for all.

Under President Ali’s leadership, the Government has rolled out several pro-worker and pro-people initiatives that have tangibly improved the lives of workers and their families across the country.

From steady increases in wages, to the reversal of burdensome taxes on essential goods, to targeted investments in job creation, education, housing, and healthcare, the working class has seen a revival of hope and dignity under this administration.

Moreover, the Government’s support for the revitalisation of the sugar industry and the consistent engagement with trade unions reflect a genuine regard for the role of workers in nation-building. President Ali has also prioritised inclusive growth and unity, embracing all Guyanese regardless of background or region in the ongoing transformation of our beloved nation.

FITUG is confident that even brighter days lie ahead for the working people of Guyana under a continued

rent to own. It was subsidised rent… We attacked it immediately, and we said, why would you want to keep people renting? Our plan is to give people a title, give people home ownership, make them landowners.”

Meanwhile, Minister Rodrigues emphasised that the PPP/C’s approach focuses on empowerment through land and homeownership as opposed to the opposition’s short-sighted strategies.

“We don’t want to keep people in poverty. We want to free people. Give them

financial freedom, give them empowerment, give them control over their own lives, give them an asset they can pass on to their children,” she said.

The housing minister further warned the public to remain wary of the empty promises of the opposition

and noted that it is easy to say, but not practical to do.

“People have to be cautious of these nice sounding… sound bites that the opposition likes to dispense to the public… it’s not a serious plan,” she emphasised.

Irfaan Ali presidency. His visionary leadership, tenacity in the face of challenges, and tireless efforts to promote national unity and social cohesion exemplify the values we hold dear. President Ali is not only a leader of policies but a leader of the people—accessible, responsive, and deeply committed to realising the dreams and aspirations of all Guyanese. As Guyana continues on its path of progress and prosperity, FITUG believes that the country’s future is secure and assured with Dr Irfaan Ali at the helm.

We therefore call on all workers and citizens to support his re-election and stand together for a Guyana where development is inclusive, opportunities are abundant, and no one is left behind.”

China medical team hosts outreach, first-aid training at Mackenzie Police Station

THE 20th China medical team for Guyana recently delivered a free medical outreach and first-aid training at Mackenzie Police Station in Region 10, embodying China’s humanitarian commitment and strengthening bilateral ties.

A release said that at the clinic, team specialists offered blood pressure and glucose screenings, the internal and surgical consultations and pain-management services. Each officer received personalised care — detailed symptom assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and tailored health advice — earning praise for their professionalism.

A highlight, according to the release was hands-on training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre. Critical for law enforcement,

these skills equip officers to respond to emergencies on duty or in daily life. Experts combined lectures with demonstrations and one-onone drills, covering steps from assessing consciousness to executing chest compressions and abdominal thrusts

"Police face unique health risks in high-stakes roles," noted Dr. Feng Liang, deputy team leader. "This

initiative aims to safeguard their well-being, while sharing China’s medical expertise to enhance local emergency response capabilities."

Further, the release said

that Sergeant Marshall, community relations officer, commended the effort: "We are very grateful to the Chinese doctors for coming here to carry out

the free clinic and provide training. These services are invaluable. We hope the team returns to train more officers in life-saving skills."

Washington and Carse light up Lord's as gripping finish looms

(ESPNCRICINFO) - Washington Sundar's prized wicket-taking set India up for a 135-run pursuit on the final day of the third Test at Lord's , but in a twist to an enthralling fourth day in which 14 wickets fell, they only have six wickets in hand.

Brydon Carse removed Karun Nair and Shubman Gill cheaply for impressive figures of 2 for 11 from four overs, and Ben Stokes bowled night watcher Akash Deep with the last ball of the day as three wickets fell in the last halfhour of play.

Washington's 4 for 22 included the key names of Joe Root, Jamie Smith and Stokes before he claimed the last England wicket to fall, Shoaib Bashir, as the hosts took a lead of 192. After scores were level on first innings, that meant India needed to chase down 193 for a 2-1 lead in the series.

a top edge into the air above wicketkeeper Smith. But it wasn't until 30 minutes before stumps that England were able to make inroads again, Nair flummoxed by Carse's nip-backer and offering no shot as the ball

struck the inside of his back knee. Gill, on 6, failed to overturn his lbw dismissal after he was hit on the knee roll by one in line with middle stump.

When Akash Deep entered, still needing to don his arm guard and gloves, Root

revved up the crowd to protest at any time wasting, which had been Gill's bugbear in a heated exchange with Zak Crawley at the end of Day Three.

The issue went from prickly to farcical to down-

right funny when Carse rapped Akash Deep's pads. He survived England's review on umpire's call with impact on the top of leg stump, and India sent the physio out to apply some strapping to the batter's leg, chewing up more time.

England managed to squeeze in another over, though, and Stokes struck with the fourth ball, flattening Akash Deep's off stump.

India's bowlers started the day with great intent. Jasprit Bumrah caused Crawley all sorts of discomfort without being rewarded, and Mohammed Siraj produced a miserly seven-over opening spell yielding two wickets.

Ben Duckett was the first to go, pulling to Bumrah at mid-on amid an impassioned send-off from Siraj that ensured the tensions of the previous evening remained high.

Siraj then pinned Ollie Pope, lbw, although it took an India review to confirm his dismissal for just 4 off 17 balls. Pope's average in the second innings languishes at

a mere 19.64 now.

Nitish Kumar Reddy relieved Bumrah midway through the morning session, and removed Crawley for the second time in the match, this time a loose drive outside off stump gathered by Jaiswal at gully.

Harry Brook mounted a counterattack, ramping Akash Deep for back-to-back fours before launching him down the ground for six, but it was short-lived. He fell for a 19-ball 23 when, attempting to sweep a full, straight one, Akash Deep flattened his middle stump in the perfect riposte.

Enter Washington as India turned to spin after lunch, and he rattled Root's middle stump with one that slid under the attempted sweep and broke his fifth-wicket stand with Stokes at 67. Root's 40 ended up as England's highest of the innings, and his dismissal ended a run of four scores of fifty or above at Lord's (including three centuries on the trot).

WI batting failure puts Australia in command on a 15-wicket day

(ESPNCRICINFO) - West Indies' pace bowlers surged under lights on the second day at Sabina Park as the Test moved a breakneck speed with Australia stumbling to 99 for 6 amid a torrid working over in some of the toughest conditions imaginable.

The passage of play when West Indies took the new ball was electrifying. Konstas wasn't able to get off the mark as he jabbed at a short-of-a-length delivery from Shamar Joseph and was taken in the gully. It left Konstas, who had been billed as the future of the top order, with 50 runs in the series at 8.33.

Usman Khawaja managed to take his balls-faced tally in the series to over 300 - a not inconsiderable achievement given the conditions - but inside-edged a big drive against Shamar Joseph into his stumps, making it all six dismissals

Sam Konstas' miserable series ended with a duck, leaving his Test prospects for the Ashes in jeopardy, but Cameron Green played outstandingly for an innings worth far more than the 42 on the scoreboard although he could have been run out on 14. By the close of another hectic day which saw 15 wickets fall, Australia held a lead of 181 which was already considerable in the conditions but West Indies had given themselves a glimmer. West Indies had been dismantled for 143 with Australia's bowling sharing the success. Scott Boland, who replaced Nathan Lyon in the XI, finished with three wickets. It meant a first-innings lead of 82 for Australia, but also saw them starting their second innings at the beginning of the final session as the lights took full hold.

for the series from around the wicket.

Then Alzarri Joseph turned up the throttle against Steven Smith with a spell where he touched 147kph and produced the fastest over by a West Indies bowler in the series.

Smith was dropped on 1, a low chance to Justin Greaves at second slip, and appeared to have trouble sighting the ball which is a challenge he has spoken about in day-night Tests. With his 12th delivery to him, Alzarri found the inside edge with a fuller delivery having pinned Smith back in the crease.

West Indies spurned a golden chance to remove Green when he and Travis Head were caught ball-watching over a single. Briefly the pair resisted, but it couldn't last as Head sent a low catch to second slip against Greaves.

Beau Webster was de -

feated by late movement from Alzarri, a virtually unplayable delivery, and Alex Carey edged a wild drive to slip two balls after being clanged on the helmet by a bouncer that required repair work to the helmet. Carey's stroke was one of a batter not backing their chances of hanging around.

As with the opening day, the game moved at a much more sedate pace for the first two hours. West Indies had fought hard during the morning session which took on a similar pattern to Australia's first innings where the scoring rate was low. They were 73 for 3 at the interval and later 124 for 5 before tumbling in a heap with a mixture of good deliveries and poor batting.

Brandon King, who had opened after injuries to John Campbell and Mikyle Louis on the first day, had

been solid during the opening exchanges before falling to a bail-trimming lbw against Josh Hazlewood.

There was a brief moment of controversy when John Campbell was nearly run out by Pat Cummins' under-arm flick from midon. Nitin Menon didn't call for the TV umpire and said Australia hadn't appealed. Replays showed Campbell's bat bounced but had been ground fractionally over the line beforehand. There was a heated conversation between Cummins and Menon in the aftermath.

Roston Chase had battled through 70 balls when he edged a lifter from Cummins to first slip as he tried to drop the bat and gloves out of the line.

Campbell, meanwhile, had shaped up well, showing good judgement with tip and runs while latching onto anything slightly

lose, especially a crunching cover drive against Hazlewood. However, a moment of misjudgment ended his stay when he shouldered arms to Boland.

Louis, who hurt his knee on the opening day, played the worst shot from the top order, a horrid swipe across the line to leave West Indies 95 for 5.

But Australia weren't blemish free. Carey missed two chances, the first when he dived across in front of first slip for an edge off Greaves then a low inside edge from Shai Hope. However, Hope fell next ball when a delivery nipped sharply from Boland, scooting past the inside edge.

From there the innings subsided which included Greaves being run out coming back for a third when he was beaten by Konstas' excellent throw from the deep.

GASA and world aquatics host biomechanics testing for athletes

PRESIDENT of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Yolema Philips said that World Aquatics Biomechanics Swim Clinic was a success as a number of the country’s top athletes were able to see their flaws and make improvements.

Aquatic Centre and was facilitated by biomechanics science expert Genadijus Sokolovas.

According to Phillips,

The clinic ran from July 6th - 9th at the National

“We hosted a four-day coaches’ clinic; the program was facilitated by Genadijus Sokolovas, a leading expert with proved scientific cre -

dentials and specialisation in biomechanics. Biomechanical power testing was done using advanced underwater camera systems to analyse swimmers’ techniques in detail. A total of 44 pre and competitive athletes benefitted from the power testing, receiving individualised

feedback alongside their coaches on how to correct and refine their technique for improved performances.”

The GASA head said this is part of their series of programmes designed to help develop the next cadre of top swimmers by the Association.

“This initiative was spearheaded by the GASA executive team as part of its 2025 development project for athletes and coaches and was made possible through the support of World Aquatics.”

The swimming administrators added that this level of mechanical testing in

usually done at the world champions where only a few athletes from Guyana are exposed.

She says that the range of swimmers that benefitted will auger well for the country’s swimming programme in the years to come.

Warriors roar to the top as Capitals crash in Providence Showdown

by a

the Guyana Amazon Warriors lit up the National Stadium with a dominant

performance to crush the Dubai Capitals by 57 runs and storm to the top of the

points table in the 2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

In Match 6 of the highstakes five-team showdown, the Warriors bravely defended a modest 138 for 7 — turning the heat on with a fiery bowling display that folded the Capitals for 81 inside 16 overs.

Despite early blows — losing power-hitters Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0), Shimron Hetmyer (14), and Johnson Charles (11) inside the powerplay — the Warriors found their backbone in Moeen Ali. The classy Englishman staged a counterattack with two gritty partnerships: a steady 43-run stand with rising teenage star Jewel An-

drew and a quickfire 47 with the ever-dangerous Sherfane Rutherford.

Capitals’ left-arm seamer Kaleem Sana did his best to halt the momentum, but Romario Shepherd — playing his first game of the season — ensured the Warriors ended on a competitive note.

The real carnage, though, came when the Warriors had the ball.

Captain Imran Tahir orchestrated a bowling masterclass — rotating seven bowlers to perfection. Dwaine Pretorius set the tone, sending back the out-of-form Rohan Mustafa, before Shepherd delivered a knockout punch with a double-wicket over. From there, it was the Tahir

show — the veteran leggie spun a web around the Capitals' middle and lower order, finishing with an incredible 4/12 — the best figures of the tournament so far. Moeen Ali and Gudakesh Motie joined the party as the Capitals collapsed spectacularly. With this commanding victory, the Warriors now sit pretty at the top of the table with two wins from three — while the Capitals are left clinging to a shot at the final ahead of their final clash against the defending champions Rangpur Riders. Next up, the Warriors face the Hobart Hurricanes XI on Wednesday in what promises to be another sizzling encounter.

ExxonMobil Global Super League…

Riders steal last-ball thriller against Hurricanes

(ESPNCRICINFO) - Ho -

bart Hurricanes XI and Rangpur Riders had both started their ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League campaigns with a win, but only one side could carry on their unbeaten streak after they met at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with Rangpur Riders stealing a thriller off the last ball of the game to take the spoils and head to the top of the (GSL) table after five completed games.

Hurricanes captain Ben McDermott won the toss and inserted the Riders, who got themselves to a competitive total of 151/6, largely thanks to 43 off 31 balls from Ibrahim Zadran at the top of the order, and the swashbuckling blade of Kyle Mayers, who hit 8 fours and two sixes to score 67 off 42 balls, and to remain unbeaten and go past

the milestone of 4000 T20 runs in the process.

The Hurricanes were thankful for the tricksy leg-spin of Usama Mir, his three wickets for just 15 runs keeping the Riders total to a manageable one. The Riders would also have been pleased with what has been around a par score for the tournament so far, and were buoyed even more when Mayers removed Hurricane’s opener Bhankuka Rajapaska, caught behind by Nurul Hasan with the score on just 4 runs.

A solid partnership of 49 runs then followed in quick time between McDermott and Macalister Wright, the same pair who impressed with the bat in the Hurricanes first match of the tournament. Any thoughts the Hurricanes might have had of coasting the total were

A MASSIVE crowd and classical on-pitch battles were the highlights to a resounding end to the third edition of the ‘One Guyana’ King and Queen of the Sand Football on Saturday night last at the People’s Progressive Party Office Ground, located at Five Corners, Industrial Area, Linden.

Speightland, the defending champions of the queens segment, in retaining their title handed the previously

undefeated Iconic Strikers their first loss of the competition, to walk away with the $800,000 winners purse.

In the male championship match, new Kings were crowned and as predicted, LA Ballers were too good for their opponents, Goal IQ, whom they blanked 2-0 and were duly rewarded with $1.5 million dollars.

The story of the still reigning queens, Speightland, is one to savour as they ended as the second best team

to Iconic Strikers, following the end of the group stage -- their only loss was to the same team, 1-0.

However, they came back storming in the semifinals when they upstaged the GDF 5-4 in a humdinger of a clash, and then placed the icing on the cake with a commanding victory on Saturday night as they returned the favour, winning 3-1.

Nikita Wayne led the championship charge with a double, scoring in the 5th and

soon dashed, however, when 53/2 soon became 82/5, with the top order all back in the hutch.

With 55 required off the last six overs, Hurricanes had Mohammed Nabi and Odean Smith both set in double figures. Nabi then opened the shoulders in the 15th over, plundering Tabraiz Shamsi for a six and then a four, thirteen runs off the over left the game in the balance, 42 needed from 30 balls.

Azmatullah Omarzai then rattled through a frugal over for the cost of just six runs to keep Riders in with chance, with 36 needed from 24 balls, Hurricanes were only ever a few lusty blows away.

The match swung one way, then the other, Odean Smith hit Khaled Ahmed for four, only for the Bangla -

deshi medium pacer to hit back right away and dismiss Smith for 20 off 13 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai did the business again, the 18th over costing just four runs.

Needing 22 off 12 deliveries, Nabi swiped the first ball of the 19th over from Khaled Ahmed for six, but the twists still came as Ahmed dismissed Fabian Allen and Raf Macmillan in consecutive balls to leave Hurricanes needing 12 off the final over.

Azmatullah Omarzai was given the last over, Nabi swiped him for 6 and looked to have the game won before he fell for 44 to leave 3 runs needed off 1 ball. Billy Stanlake was run out off the final ball to give Rangpur Riders the victory by just one run as a breathless encounter came to a close in Guyana.

23rd minutes, with the pother goal coming off the boot of Alliyah Venture in the 24th minute. Shaniah Thornhill netted Iconic Strikers’ consolation goal and for their efforts, they were presented with $300,000.

The GDF were rampaging in the third-place clash, as they trounced Hururu 7-1 led by a hat-trick by Sandra Johnson, who scored in the 4th, 7th and 26th minutes. She was ably assisted by Glendu Lewis, who scored

a brace in the 27th and 28th minutes, with one each from Niomi Williams in the 7th and Jalade Trim in the 8th minute.

Hururu’s only response came from Nickesha Persaud in the 2nd minute, when they drew first blood. GDF claimed the third-place prize of $200,000 with Hururu collecting $100,000.

There were no surprises in the king’s final with LA Ballers romping to a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Goal

IQ. They were led by their most prolific scorer Marcus Tudor, who scored back-toback goals in the 17th and 18th minutes. Tudor ended the tournament with 14 goals and certainly led the charge for the 1.5 million pay day. Goal IQ received $500,000 for their efforts, while the third-place match saw Spaniards collecting $200,000 without breaking a sweat, as their opponents Hard Knocks failed to put in an appearance.
