Deep-water port, Linden-Lethem route, rail would enhance trade capacity --transform transport infrastructure, Minister Edghill says

THE government’s plans for a deep-water harbour, expanded road links and the possible reintroduction of rail transport are expected to fundamentally reshape Guyana’s trade, logistics and economic landscape, according to Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.

Speaking on the development agenda outlined by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, Edghill said the proposed deep-water harbour at Palmyra is not merely an idea, but more so a concrete plan that is advancing steadily.

“It is at the Palmyra area that we are looking for the development of the deep-wa-

ter harbour,” the minister stated, adding, “a deep-water harbour, which is what the President has spoken about, is not a thought. It is a plan.”

According to Edghill, the timeline for implementation is now largely dependent on final decisions surrounding the builder, operator and contractual arrangements.

“It’s only a matter of time, and that will be determined very soon, who will be the builder, the operator and the terms and conditions,” he said.

Against this backdrop, he noted that a deep-water harbour will provide connectivity that will be unprecedented, and create more economic

opportunities.

He pointed to regional trade challenges observed during his recent participation at the COP meeting in Belém, Brazil, where he engaged with transport officials from neighbouring countries.

The minister said that exporters in Brazil, particularly in Manaus, face significant logistical constraints.

“They were saying that Manaus on a weekly basis, they could have hundreds, or even thousands of containers waiting to be shipped, and the spot of getting those containers to water to get to the rest of the world is your greatest challenge,” he said.

Edghill went on to say that Guyana is well-positioned to become a key export outlet for such cargo, particularly through the Linden–Lethem Road link connecting Brazil to Guyana’s coast.

“With that road link, Linden to Lethem, with connectivity to the deep-water harbour, hundreds of containers can come together to be shipped with ease out of the deep water,” Edghill noted.

It was then that he disclosed that significant progress had already been made on the Linden–Lethem corridor; this development is seen as a catalyst for widespread economic activity.

“We’ve already built out the bridges. The first phase of the road is under construction,” he said, adding that the second phase of the road is being negotiated and the third and fourth phases are under active consideration.

Further, he added that the bridge across the Kurupukari River is also being prioritised, noting: “The bridge across the Kurupukari is under active consideration and will be built out in this five-year term.”

While facilitating trade, Edghill said that the infrastructure build-out would

stimulate economic development along the corridor, particularly for hinterland and riverain communities.

He said that the expanded transport network would create demand for a range of services.

“There will be a need for more restaurants, more service centres, hotels or motels, so that truck drivers will be able to get stocks, to get rest, to continue heavy-duty vehicle mechanics to service these trucks,” he said.

Looking further ahead, Edghill said that the Ministry of Public Works is also examining rail transport as part of a multi-modal logistics strategy.

“The central Transport Planning Unit of the Ministry of Public Works is also looking at rail, or railway to move that kind of cargo, and people,” he said, noting that planners are assessing a rail alignment built closest to or alongside the Linden to Lethem Road.

In addition to freight movement, the minister noted that the government is considering mass transit solutions to ease congestion and improve urban mobility.

With this, he noted that the President has been speaking about transit systems “to bring mass transit operations, to bring people out of and into the city,” particularly as new roads and highways come on stream.

“So, while we’re opening up new roads, new highways, with the congestion that is taking place, mass transit is something that is under consideration,” Edghill added.

These plans, he noted, form part of the government’s wider vision to modernise the country’s transport and trade infrastructure.

THE government will implement new vehicle tint regulations from January 1, 2026, ending what officials say was an outdated and largely unenforceable approach to window tinting and replacing it with a modern framework aimed at improving road safety and law enforcement efficiency.

Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond on Monday announced that the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Tint) Regulations 2025 will allow all vehicles to carry some level of tint without the need for exemptions, while introducing clearly defined Visible Light Transmission (VLT) standards and standardised enforcement using approved tint meters.

According to the minister, the previous legal position permitted tinted windows only by exemption and required a mini-

mum of 65 per cent VLT, but widespread non-compliance meant that more than 70 per cent of vehicles on the road were operating outside the law.

She said Guyana had “outgrown” what effectively amounted to a ban on tint, making reform unavoidable.

Under the new regulations, no tint will be allowed on front windscreens except for a visor not exceeding six inches from the top.

Front side windows must allow at least 25 per cent VLT, while rear side windows and rear windscreens must allow a minimum of 20 per cent VLT. Mirrored or reflective tint has been expressly prohibited.

Walrond said that the revised framework was adjusted following public feedback after her initial announcement earlier this month, noting that the administration listened and

refined the regulations to balance public safety with practical realities.

The regulations also outline specific exemptions for vehicles used by the President and Prime Minister, senior government officials, the disciplined services, emergency vehicles, diplomatic missions, licensed private security agencies, businesses involved in highrisk cash handling, and individuals with certified medical conditions.

Approved exemptions will be recorded in a digital national tint registry.

Fines for non-compliance have been set at $30,000 for vehicle operators and businesses that install illegal tint.

The minister said the penalties were designed to deter breaches without being excessive, adding that the government will monitor enforcement and may adjust fines if necessary.

To ease the transition, a three-month amnesty period will begin on January 1, during which the Guyana Police Force will establish voluntary tint-testing sites across the country.

Motorists will be able to test and adjust their vehicles without penalty before full enforcement begins.

Walrond urged drivers to use the amnesty period to bring their vehicles into

compliance, stressing that the changes are part of broader efforts to strengthen public trust, improve road safety, and modernise Guyana’s traffic enforcement systems.

75 homes to be handed over at Yarrowkabra early 2026

MINISTER of Housing Collin Croal on Saturday announced that 75 homes will be handed over in early 2026 under the Yarrowkabra Homestead Programme, along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

More than 250 homes are under construction in the initial phase of the project.

“Right now…25 [houses] are already completed, and another 50 will be handed over within two weeks,” Minister Croal stated during a Facebook broadcast.

The Yarrowkabra Homestead Programme is a targeted housing initiative to empower single mothers and women-led households through home ownership and income generation.

The programme differs from traditional housing schemes by offering completed homes alongside income-earning opportunities, including shade houses to support household livelihoods.

It was introduced under the PPP/C Government’s 2020–2025 housing expansion drive and is being further developed as part of the administration’s next five-year economic and social transformation agenda.

The initiative is intended to reduce barriers to home ownership, particularly for single mothers, while promoting self-sufficiency and long-term security of tenure.

MINISTER of Housing Collin Croal, has emphasised the government’s expanded support for youth access to home ownership along with major new financial programmes for home construction and improvements in the 2026 national budget.

Croal highlighted this while speaking on the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration’s development vision for the housing sector in the next five years.

According to Minister Croal, the government intends to build on its strong gains already made.

for home construction and home upgrades,” he said, pointing to the already-established steel and cement programme which has benefited thousands with over $750 million disbursed.

Through community outreaches, the minister said there have been requests by residents for assistance in completing certain elements of their homes, including windows, walls, steps or repairing leaky roofs.

Assessments and investigations will be the criteria for the programme, the minister said.

He added: “You will find an aggressive programme towards ensuring we assist persons for home upgrade, assist persons for completion or their home construction, that will be done in a major, major way, commencing from the next budget, and we’re very happy for this, because we have been receiving a lot of requests.

Placing further emphasis on the direction of the hous-

ing sector, the minister said as part of the government’s vision of next five years, there will be greater focus on youth.

Within the last five years in allocations, the percentage of allocations that were done for young people who were under 35 is 54 per cent.

He said: “We’re happy

about that because it also signals, therefore, that the opportunity exists.

The housing programme continues to remain a pillar of economic empowerment.

This has always been so under every People’s Progressive Party/Civic government.”

Croal said that advancing citizens toward home ownership remains central to the government’s mandate.

He reflected on President Dr Irfaan Ali’s address to the nation on December 17, highlighting the administration’s commitment to social and economic transformation over the next five years.

He noted that the construction of new homes is a cornerstone of the programme, with the government targeting a minimum of 40,000 houses over five years, averaging 8,000 annually. Croal highlighted a shift to modular housing to increase volume and efficiency.

MODULAR HOUSES He said: “We received over 268 responses for the construction of modular houses. So, we can have volume.”

According to him, housing will cater to all income levels, including low-income households, moderate and middle-income groups,

and young professionals, reflecting the rising demand among those with higher disposable incomes.

Croal also emphasised the economic benefits of construction, noting that the sector provides ample employment opportunities.

“In fact, we still have a demand for skilled workers for the construction sector. Anyone who is a very skilled carpenter, mason, plumber, or even electrician can gain employment,” he said.

The minister also related that this approach not only addresses housing needs but also strengthens the local workforce and supports small businesses providing goods and services to construction sites.

Home ownership itself is positioned as a tool for economic empowerment.

Croal said that the government’s approach to home ownership aims to empower citizens by providing them with their own land, personal space, and security of tenure.

Women, particularly single mothers, are also benefitting, with over 43 per cent of allocations going to females.

He stated, “Empowerment of our women… earning on their own allows them to manage their affairs on their own.”

MINISTER of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, attended and delivered remarks at the Disability and Rehabilitation Services Managers’ Programme Review held at Cara Lodge, Georgetown, where he underscored the urgent need for improved accountability, strict adherence to clinical guidelines, enhanced supervision, and higher standards of care across the health system.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, Dr Anthony, during his address, emphasised that failure to follow established medical guidelines can result in serious consequences, including loss of life.

He noted that while guidelines are periodically

reviewed and updated, they must be adhered to at all times until any formal revisions are made.

Dr Anthony announced that beginning next year, the Ministry of Health will establish a Quality Unit to conduct clinical audits across regions and departments.

These audits will assess compliance with clinical guidelines, identify gaps in service delivery, and support corrective action where necessary. He made it clear that persistent non-compliance, despite repeated interventions, will not be tolerated.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of effective management and supervision, stressing that managers must be prepared

to document performance issues and address service deficiencies honestly, particularly in cases where patient complaints persist despite positive staff appraisals.

Addressing rehabilitation-specific priorities, Dr Anthony called for stronger interdepartmental collaboration, particularly in the management of diabetes, hypertension, stroke care, and the prevention of complications such as amputations.

He also reiterated plans for the development of a Neurological and Stroke Rehabilitation Centre, which will provide comprehensive rehabilitation services under one facility. Additionally, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to

expanding access to prosthetics, wheelchairs, and other assistive devices, while exploring sustainable ways to meet the growing demand for motorised mobility aids.

Meanwhile, Director of Rehabilitation and Disability Services, Dr Ariane Mangar, noted that the meeting outlined the Regional Rehabilitation Services Framework, which is designed to strengthen, standardise, and expand rehabilitation services across all administrative regions of Guyana.

She highlighted that the burden of stroke, amputations, trauma, chronic disease, childhood disabilities, and hearing impairment continues to grow.

Guardians of Justice

THE rule of law rests not only on written statutes and constitutional guarantees, but on the integrity, competence and accountability of those entrusted to interpret and enforce them.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC, has placed this uncomfortable but necessary truth squarely in the public arena by acknowledging that Guyana’s legal profession is falling short of the standards required to sustain public confidence in justice.

His remarks, delivered during his weekly programme Issues in the News, were neither casual nor unprecedented.

For years, concerns have circulated quietly among litigants, civil society actors and even within the courts themselves about delays, poor legal representation, weak disciplinary enforcement and limited accountability mechanisms.

What distinguishes the Attorney General’s intervention is the frankness with which he has addressed the problem and the

government’s stated willingness to support reform. A strong, ethical and professionally disciplined Bar is a cornerstone of any democratic society.

Lawyers serve as the bridge between citizens and the justice system; when that bridge is weakened, the entire structure of governance is undermined.

In Guyana, as in many developing democracies, dissatisfaction with the handling of cases, whether by attorneys or within the judicial system, is widespread.

Long delays, inconsistent advocacy, and perceptions of impunity for professional misconduct have eroded trust, particularly among ordinary citizens who lack the resources to navigate legal shortcomings.

Importantly, the Attorney General’s comments did not single out individuals or cast blanket condemnation.

Rather, they reflected a systemic concern, one that has also been raised by the judiciary itself.

Judges, in recent engagements on the administration of justice, have openly called for legislative reform to the Legal Practitioners Act, recognising that the existing framework for discipline and oversight is outdated and insufficient for modern demands.

That acknowledgment matters.

Judicial independence does not preclude accountability; indeed, the two must coexist.

Guyana’s Constitution safeguards the autonomy of the courts, but it also presumes ethical conduct, transparency and public trust.

Strengthening disciplinary mechanisms for errant practitioners and judicial officers, within constitutional boundaries, is therefore not an attack on independence but a reinforcement of legitimacy.

The proposed review of the Legal Practitioners Act offers a timely opportunity.

Enacted decades ago, the law has struggled to keep pace with the growth of the profession, the complexity of modern litigation,

and international best practices in legal regulation.

Many Commonwealth jurisdictions have since modernised their systems, establishing independent disciplinary tribunals, clearer complaint procedures, and enforceable professional standards.

Guyana cannot afford to lag behind, especially at a time when expanding economic activity, foreign investment and cross-border transactions demand a credible and efficient legal system.

Equally significant is the government’s expressed support for the judiciary’s Strategic Plan for 2024–2031.

That plan outlines reforms aimed at improving case management, reducing backlogs, enhancing transparency and strengthening institutional accountability.

With presidential backing already declared, meaningful collaboration between the executive, judiciary and Bar Association becomes not only possible but necessary.

The forthcoming engagement

between the Attorney General and the Guyana Bar Association will be a critical test.

A “vibrant Bar,” as Nandlall described, must be willing to confront uncomfortable realities and participate constructively in reform.

Professional self-regulation is most effective when it is proactive rather than defensive.

Guyana’s challenges are not unique. Around the world, legal systems grapple with balancing independence and accountability, tradition and reform.

But acknowledging deficiencies is the first step toward improvement.

If the proposed legislative changes are pursued transparently, inclusively and in good faith, they can help restore confidence in the legal profession and, by extension, in the justice system itself.

Ultimately, the question is not whether reform is necessary, but whether all stakeholders are prepared to act decisively. The rule of law demands no less.

In the circle of life on my birthday

EACH birthday is another milestone in one’s life.

As you reach the date of another birthday, the reflections force themselves on you. As you inch closer towards another year, you wonder where the idyllic years went by. Was it too beautiful to last?

I don’t care for modern society. It is not better than when I was young (not younger but young). Both the world and my country have changed since I reached the milestone of 18 and 50, and what I see I cannot say beholds me. My country rivets my psyche at the moment.

How can my fellow Guyanese deny their fellow citizens their right to vote and seek mental comfort among those who organise such denials? The optimism of the will has defeated the pessimism of the intellect.

We had free and fair election this year and people’s

votes counted, and those the citizens voted for took their rightful place as administrators of the country.

But on my birthday, I should avoid and evade such maudlin topics and look at the more enticing aspects of my life.

I am not a believer so I cannot thank unforeseen forces for bringing me this far. I prefer to dwell on mundane life. I will skip the importance of my wife and wait until our 47th anniversary arrive next year.

But with each birthday, you thank those who helped along the way and that little help transformed your life in a big way.

In this world of ours, your own existence has no meaning if you cannot allow for the existence of others.

In allowing others to exist, you add meaning to your own life.

The little helpers that made my life big have all

gone except my wife and Anil Nandlall. But on each birthday, I remember them and when I do, I think of the instruction they left with me before they departed – go out there and help others as we did to you. I would never have lived a philosophical life if it wasn’t for so many who believed in the circle of life.

I never went to high school. I studied for my GCE O’ Levels at the afternoon classes at Guyana Oriental College on Thomas Street where now stands Eureka Labs. The principal, Shruti Kant did not charge me one cent for my classes. He is one of the persons I will be forever grateful to. If I had a chance of becoming president in an earlier life, my first act would have been to name a section of Guyana after Shruti.

Having free GCE lessons did not guarantee you success. You had to get the

books to study If you didn’t have food to eat how would it be possible to get books?

One of the leading Jehovah Witnesses in Guyana at the time was Fred Phillips, the manager of the Georgetown Club who lived where Bonnie’s Supermarket is on Church Street opposite Merriman’s Mall. Mr. Philips bought all books for me.

Getting into UG was one thing. Paying the fee was another. Brian Rodway, my friend from the WPA paid my first-year fee. I went into UG and never looked back thanks to Shruti Kant, Fred Phillips and Brian Rodway.

Documents show Mohamed hoarding EBD land sold by caretaker APNU+AFC gov’t --while claiming concern for Guyanese awaiting allocation

DOCUMENTS now in the public domain reveal that the APNU+AFC coalition administration—after it had been toppled by a no-confidence motion—sold 14.9091 acres of land earmarked for housing development at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara to US-indicted WIN party leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.

What has raised serious concern is that the transaction occurred after the threemonth constitutional period within which elections were due, a phase during which the administration was deemed to be operating in caretaker mode. The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) had ruled that during this period the government should refrain from engaging in major transactions of this nature.

The agreement of sale is dated July 17, 2019, and describes the property as “Parcel No. 1619; Block No. VIII; Zone: E.B.D., being part of Plantation Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara,” measuring 14.9091 acres.

Under the terms of the agreement, the land was to be used strictly for housing development, with the Mohameds granted immediate possession to commence

infrastructural works.

These works were to include the construction of roads, bridges, drainage systems and culverts, along with the installation of water and electricity distribution facilities, all within eight months of the signing of the agreement. Additionally, the agreement stipulated a 24-month

deadline for the completion of all houses on the development—conditions that, based on the current state of the land, appear to have been breached.

This publication is not aware of whether the required infrastructural works were completed within the stipulated timeframe. However, the

land—equivalent to approximately 75 high-income house lots—is presently unoccupied and overtaken by vegetation, with no visible signs of housing development.

The disclosures have sparked widespread reaction on social media, with many questioning the sincerity of Azruddin Mohamed’s public

expressions of concern for the poor and his attempts to portray himself and his family as anti-corruption advocates.

Commentators have pointed out that if his concern for disadvantaged Guyanese is genuine, and if he truly believes that ordinary citizens are struggling to access house

lots, a meaningful and practical step would be to make the Little Diamond land available to 75 deserving families.

Instead, critics note, the property remains idle while there remains a large housing demand, and no available land for allocation along the East Bank Demerara.

The initiative, introduced in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, UPL Costa Rica, Philip Morris International, and the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) marks a major step towards strengthening the nation’s agricultural resilience.

On Sunday, Minister Mustapha met with farmers at the four polders in Black Bush to assess the current flooding situation and put additional systems in place.

While touching on the

crop insurance, Mustapha said, “this here shows the vision of our President; now those farmers who would be affected during this crop, the rice crop, will be helped with the insurance.”

Mustapha noted that UPL has partnered with the Demerara Mutual Life Insurance Company “and I will be meeting with them tomorrow [Monday)] to put all the system in place, all the weather stations are already put in place, and the farmers will be receiving their certificate very

shortly.”

He added, “I know the vision of the President, he knows this area, Guyana as a whole because of the unpredictable climate that we have that farmers are very vulnerable and now we are seeing that the help that we have put in place will be activiated very shortly.”

At the launch in July, President Ali had described it as a clear reflection of the government’s commitment to safeguarding livelihoods and fortifying the rice sector.

“This launch signifies not only a bold step in climate resilience, but also a demonstration of the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of our farmers and strengthening the foundation of our national food security,” the President had said.

He emphasised that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) is determined to ensure that rice remains a staple in Guyana’s food system and a central pillar of the agricultural economy.

Under the agreement, over 6,000 rice farmers will receive free agricultural insurance coverage for a period of three years, with no premiums required.

The insurance is designed to cover losses from extreme weather events such as flooding and drought, two of the most pressing threats in recent years.

“When rice farmers go to the bank now, they can go with the insurance. And with the insurance, the risk is reduced and so is the cost at the bank,” the President said.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to introduce modern agricultural

technologies and reduce the sector’s vulnerability to climate shocks.

“Through this agreement, we will not only provide insurance assistance to reduce the risks posed by adverse weather, but we will also implement a pilot innovative rice farming system involving modern technology,” Dr Ali had also stated.

He recalled the devastating floods of 2011, which impacted over 2,000 rice farmers and caused extensive damage to the agriculture sector, prompting over $2 billion in emergency relief.

“We want partners that will help us build a sustainable food system and develop agriculture.

UPL will ensure this,” the President added, praising the company for its leadership in BioSolutions and precision farming.

Anthony Joshua injured in Nigeria car crash that killed two team members

BRITISH heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria, which killed two members of his team.

The former world champion was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Ogun State, near Lagos.

The two men who died were Joshua’s close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, the boxer’s promoter Matchroom Boxing said in a statement.

It added that Joshua was in a stable condition in hospital, where he was taken for “checks and treatment” and will remain for observation.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected - and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time,” the Matchroom statement said.

The group’s chair, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, paid tribute to the “two great men” who were killed in the crash. “Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone,” he said.

Boxing expert Steve Bunce described Mr Ghami and Mr Ayodele as “two of Joshua’s closest friends” and as “massive parts of the Anthony Joshua machine”.

“They’ve been with him, if not from the start, at least very early on. Latz is AJ’s personal trainer and Sina is his strength and conditioning man. They are with him all the time,” Bunce told BBC Radio 5 Live.

A joint statement from the Ogun and Lagos state governments said Joshua was stable and conscious, and had been in contact with his family.

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said he had spoken to the 36-year-old boxer personally to convey his condolences and wish him a “full and speedy recovery”.

“AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care,” he said in a post on X. The crash took place on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway at around 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT) on Monday.

The incident involved two vehicles: a black Lexus and a stationary red commercial truck.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the Lexus was “suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”, based on preliminary findings.

It said the car appeared to have “lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre” and crashed into the stationary truck by the side of the road.

Pictures shared by the FRSC showed a wrecked car at the site of the crash, with a crowd of onlookers gathered around.

Local officials said Joshua and another man - the vehicle’s driver - were rescued by the boxer’s security team.

Video from the scene showed the boxer being helped out from the back seat of a wrecked SUV. Ogun and Lagos state governments said Joshua and another passenger were “immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos”.

The Lagos-Ibadan expressway is known as one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads, with particularly heavy traffic at this time of year as many Nigerians living abroad visit for the festive period.

Joshua, who was born in Watford, has family roots in Sagamu - a town in Ogun State, south-west Nigeria,

near the crash site.

He had been spending time in the country following his recent victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on 19 December.

Paul posted on X after the crash: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo said an investigation into the accident had been ordered.

A relative of Joshua’s in Nigeria, who asked not to be named, told the BBC that news of the crash came as a “shock” to the family.

They said they were hoping for his “speedy recovery” and offered prayers for those who died in the crash.

The family member confirmed that Joshua was travelling from Lagos to Ogun State when the accident happened. His family had been expecting him to join them in Sagamu for New Year celebrations.

The boxer’s family is well known in the town and traces its ancestry there across several generations.

Recover Guyana prepares for ‘greater year of impact’

RECOVER Guyana is one of the key local organisations that is actively fighting for environmental wellness, youth empowerment and a brighter, cleaner future for our country.

The work of the organisation is guided by a powerful principle, that is, impact must be measurable, inclusive, and sustainable.

This year, the focus was on strategically delivering solutions and strengthening communities, while also building systems that are going to serve Guyana in the years to come.

First, Recover Guyana provided access to clean drinking water through its Project Flow which is a National Water Purification and Sustainability Initiative that involves collaboration with the Greater Guyana Initiative and the Ministry of Education. This is a landmark multi-year programme that aims to expand access to potable water nationwide.

Project Flow is set to deliver solar-powered water-purification systems to over 100 public secondary schools,

along with 10 technical and vocational education training institutions, and four special needs schools, reaching over 58,000 students.

In a video underscoring its impact, the Recover Guyana team said that these systems use advanced filtration technology powered by renewable energy, ensuring

reliable, safe drinking water and at the same time, it promotes environmental stewardship.

Its secretary Francina Duncan said that by encouraging the use of reusable bottles, the project is projected to eliminate some 25 million single-use plastic bottles from landfills and waterways

by the end of the programme.

Additionally, they recalled the evolution of youth leadership, described as a defining pillar of their work.

Strategic Development Director, Vishal Roopnarine, said, “Through Shout 3.0, students from across Guyana were given a national platform to speak on climate ac-

tion, sustainability and environmental stewardship. From over 100 submissions, charter semifinalists competed live, inspiring schools to establish environmental clubs and take ownership of sustainability on their campuses.”

This programme, he said, awarded four million Guyana dollars in cash and prizes,

including a million-dollar project grant to the winning school. According to him, this programme transforms ideas into action and elevates the voices of our youth into national conversations.

Two injured in Three Friends Public Road accident

A MOTOR vehicle accident on the Three Friends Public Road, Region Two (Pomeroon–Supenaam), on Sunday evening, has left one man injured and another in a critical condition.

The accident occurred at approximately 18:30hrs and involved a motor car that was reportedly speeding at the time.

The driver, identified as Avi Persaud, sustained minor injuries.

The second occupant of the vehicle, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, remains in a critical condition.

Preliminary information suggests that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a lantern post within the village. The impact caused the car to overturn and land on its side, leaving it extensively damaged.

Residents in the area responded quickly, assisting in removing the injured occupants from the vehicle and transporting them to the Lima Regional Hospital, where they are receiving medical care. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

trate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the charge— contrary to Section 184 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01—was read to him. As the offence is indictable, he was not required to plead.

Particulars of the charge alleged that between July 1, 2021 and February 18, 2025, at Georgetown, while being the clerk or servant of One Communications, formerly

Woman dead, passenger injured in Green Field Embankment crash

A 32-year-old woman was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday night, on the Green Field Railway Embankment Road, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Thana Cambridge of Ann’s Grove, the driver and owner of motor car PAE 6337. Police said the vehicle was travelling west when Cambridge reportedly swerved to avoid a herd of cows on the roadway.

In the process, she lost control of the car, which

slammed into a concrete light pole before plunging into a nearby trench.

Cambridge and her lone passenger, 27-year-old teacher Marrisa Semple, sustained injuries and were rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens.

Cambridge was pronounced dead on arrival, while Semple was treated for serious injuries and remains under medical observation. Police investigations are ongoing.

Global forest products trade and production show signs of recovery in 2024 ROME, Italy – After a sharp decline in 2023, the global forest products sector saw signs of stabilization in 2024, according to Global forest products facts and figures 2024 , released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The report highlights that global international trade in wood and paper products has regained momentum, with modest growth recorded across most major product groups.

The upswing comes after a 14 percent drop overall in trade of wood and paper products in 2023.

Global exports of wood and paper products increased only slightly by $7 billion, or 1.4 percent, to reach $486 billion in 2024 – but still surpassing all levels recorded before 2021. Exports of nonwood forest products also grew to reach $25 billion, underscoring the forest sector’s broadening economic importance.

“Forests support millions of livelihoods worldwide, and the number is set to rise as forests offer more economic opportunities in a growing range of industries, including sustainable wood production,” said FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

Production increases across most wood-based product categories The 2024 results reflect gradual market recovery in several regions, supported by increased production in most major product groups.

Gains ranged from 2 percent for industrial roundwood, wood pellets and wood pulp, to between 4 and 5 percent for wood-based panels, paper and paperboard.

Industrial roundwood removals - Industrial roundwood removals – the total volume of wood harvested for uses other than energy – rose by 2 percent to 1.96 billion cubic metres in 2024, although its global trade declined by 1 percent to 96 million cubic metres.

Sawnwood - While glob-

al sawnwood production remained nearly unchanged, the picture varied regionally.

Output fell by 2 percent in North America but remained stable in Europe and the Asia-Pacific, while climbing 2 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean. Trade in sawnwood recorded no overall change compared to 2023.

Wood-based panels Wood-based panels continued to build on the recovery seen in 2023, growing for a second consecutive year.

Global production expanded by 5 percent to 393 million cubic metres, with increases reported in all five regions.

Trade in panels rose even faster, up 6 percent to 90 million cubic metres.

Wood pulp and recovered paper - Wood pulp production climbed 3 percent to reach 189 million tonnes, while international trade expanded 2 percent to an all-time high of 73 million tonnes. Much of the additional supply originated in China and South America – particularly Brazil, Chile and Uruguay – reflecting the region’s growing competitiveness in pulp. Global consumption of recovered paper also edged up by 1 percent to 243 million tonnes worldwide.

Wood pellets - Wood pellets have seen extraordinary growth in recent decades, mainly driven by bioenergy targets in Europe, the Republic of Korea and Japan. After a slight dip in 2023, global production returned to 48 million tonnes in 2024, equal to the 2022 level, and almost twothirds – 31 million tonnes – entered global trade. Europe and North America remained the main producing regions, accounting for 47 percent and 28 percent of global output respectively, though the Asia-Pacific region increased its share from 14 percent in 2020 to 22 percent in 2024. When it came to consumption, Europe accounted for 70 percent, while the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 28 percent. (FAO)

This programme also equips young people with skills and confidence, enabling them to contribute in a meaningful way to a climate-resilient Guyana.

Alongside this, the organisation hosted the first National Youth Conference on Mangrove Conservation, bringing together more than 150 youth leaders, educators, scientists, environmental practitioners and policymakers from across Guyana.

Looking towards the future, Recover Guyana stated that it is preparing for an even greater year of impact come 2026.

Its Second Vice-President Naudya Hoosein said Shout 4.0 will be launched with an expanded national reach, delivering the largest youth-led environmental platform yet and deepening its impact across Guyana.

“The ENGAGE project

will expand into Regions Two and Four, while participants in Regions Three and Six will benefit from refresher training to strengthen and scale their green enterprises.

Project FLOW will move into full implementation, with water-purification systems commencing and being fully installed across Regions Three and Six, further advancing national access to clean drinking water,” Hoosein affirmed.

In addition to these flagship initiatives, the organisation will continue its cancer-survivor support programmes and deliver its annual Earth Day and World Food Day activities. This will ensure that community care, environmental action and sustainability remain at the heart of its work.

Because partnership is important to them, Recover Guyana extended appreciation to its government and private- sector partners which include the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, ExxonMobil Guyana, Scotiabank Guyana, and the Greater Guyana Initiative, among others.

Melbourne Ashes pitch rated 'unsatisfactory' by ICC THE pitch from the twoday Ashes Test in Melbourne has been rated as "unsatisfactory" by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The decision means the Melbourne Cricket Ground receives one demerit point.

If a venue receives six demerit points across a fiveyear period it is suspended from hosting international cricket for 12 months.

It is the first time a pitch in Australia has been deemed substandard since the ICC overhauled its system two years ago.

Thirty-six wickets fell in six sessions in the showpiece Boxing Day match, with excessive seam movement on offer for pace bowlers.

"The MCG pitch was too much in favour of the bowlers," said match referee Jeff Crowe.

"With 20 wickets falling on the first day, 16 on the second day and no batter even reaching a half-century, the pitch was 'Unsatisfactory' as per the guidelines and the venue gets one demerit point."

The MCG's head curator Matt Page left 10mm of grass on the pitch to counter hot conditions forecast later in the match but this has been given as a reason for the lively conditions.

Page said he was in a "state of shock" during the match, which England won by four wickets. Travis Head's 46 in Australia's second innings was the highest score.

The Boxing Day Test was the second two-day affair of this Ashes series but the surface for the other, the first Test in Perth, was rated as "very good" suggesting batter error was more to

blame there.

"Unsatisfactory" is the ICC's second lowest ranking for a pitch.

Though this is the first time an Australian strip has been rated substandard under the current system, there has been trouble with the MCG pitch before.

In the drawn match of 2017, the surface did not offer enough assistance for the bowlers, resulting in a dull contest in which only 24 wickets fell. That was rated as "poor".

A year later, the pitch used for a win for India was rated as "average".

Speaking before the ICC's announcement, Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, defended Page, suggesting this year's pitch should be viewed in the context of trying to improve from 2017.

Anthony Joshua injured in fatal Nigeria Infantino defends car crash World Cup ticket prices FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has defended the cost of World Cup tickets by saying they reflect the public's "absolutely crazy" demand for next summer's tournament.

The pricing structure for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico has been widely criticised, with the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) describing it as "scandalous".

Group stage tickets are up to three times the price of those for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the cheapest ticket for the final in New Jersey is £3,119.

But Infantino says the level of demand far outstrips supply.

BRITISH heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria, which killed two other people.

The former world champion was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos.

Video from the scene showed the 36-year-old being helped out from the back seat of a wrecked SUV. Five adult men were involved in the crash, Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said. The two who died were both "male foreign nationals", according to local officials.

They added that Joshua and another man - the vehicle's driver - were rescued by the boxer's security team.

The crash took place on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway at around 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT) on Monday.

The FRSC said the Lexus was "suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit", based on preliminary findings.

It said the car appeared to have "lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre" and crashed into the stationary truck by the side of the road.

He had been spending time in the country following his recent victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, on December 19.(Paul posted on X after the crash: "Life is much more important than boxing.

The 40-year-old scored twice in Al-Nassr's 3-0 win against Al Akhdoud on Saturday to take his tally for club and country to 956 goals.

West Indies to begin U-19 World Cup campaign against Tanzania …Guyanese Van Lange and Apple selected

By Sean Devers VICE-CAPTAIN Jonathan Van Lange and Shamar Apple are a part of the West Indies which begins their campaign against Tanzania on Thursday January 15 in ICC 2026 U-19 World Cup, before coming up against Afghanistan on Sunday, January 18.

The regional side then oppose South Africa on Thursday January 22 in their third game in the U-19 World Cup. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six phase followed by the Semi-Finals on February 3 and 4 with the Final slated for February 6 at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.

ghanistan and Tanzania and their group matches will be played at the High- Performance Oval in Windhoek, Namibia.

West Indies will play their warm-up matches against Ireland and Japan before the tournament begins in earnest on January 15.

West Indies’ only title since Brian Lara led the team in the inaugural event in 1988 in Australia, was in 2016 when Guyanese Shimron Hetmyer captained the team to Championship honours.

Top-order batter, Joshua Dorne, enjoyed outstanding success this year in regional competitions and for West Indies U-19s in Internationals and has been appointed captain.

THERE has been no conversation around Usman Khawaja's retirement after the fifth and final Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, said during a media interaction.

"He's with his family at the moment having a couple of days off," McDonald said. "We're always having conversations about where players are at, there's no indication at my end that he's calling it in Sydney.

"But his performance in this calendar year has been good enough to warrant selection, so I'd say he'll be there marking centre in Sydney."

Australia do not play another Test after Sydney until August, when they host Bangladesh. That is followed by a tour of South Africa, a home series against New Zealand and a tour of India, making it 13 Tests between October and March.

Sammy, who captained the West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles, has endured a tough start since becoming all-format head coach on April 1.

However, T&T finished third behind Jamaica and Curacao to miss out on their second ever World Cup appearance.

While speculation was rife that Yorke would lose his job, Edwards said the former national player will continue in his role as the TTFA was satisfied with the direction of the team “The most important thing was getting the fans involved in football…seeing the stadium packed supporting the team. Knowing the team would have done their very best to qualify.

“What’s next? Are we going to scrap the programme that was done in the past? No, we are not going to scrap the programme, we continue to build on the programme. We are in discussions with coach Dwight Yorke and his staff currently in terms of next steps,” Edwards said.

The TTFA president confirmed that the national team will compete against three higher ranked teams in the March FIFA window.

T&T will play against home team Uzbekistan, Gabon and Iceland in the FIFA series. “…We would have been granted the opportunity to take part in the FIFA series. It’s a series that’s done in the match window for countries to come together.

“That tournament will be a next step for TT. It helps us in terms of our push for the next four years in terms of moving up the rankings. All the countries that are taking part in that tournament will be above the ranking of TT,” Edwards said.
